15 local Firefighters serving food at the Old Spaghetti Factory Story and Photos by Pat Krause Over 15 local firefighters and COD cadets worked at the Old Spaghetti Factory serving customers just to get tips that were donated to a charity. The firefighters spent the lunch and dinner hours at the Restaurant serving food and drinks to all the customers. Many of the customers came just to support the charity and help the firefighters with large tips for their excellent service. I am sure that some of the firefighters from local cities
spent their day off to do this, and they were assisted by local College of the Desert Cadets to help out. The T ip-a-Firefighter, fundraising event benefited the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. All the tips the firefighters earned went to the Hospital. The Old Spaghetti Factory opened their doors to this event and is a big hit with customers. The Spaghetti Factory is on Hwy 111 in Rancho Mirage. Big Hearts sponsored the
event for Little Hearts of the Desert Guild. The firefighters brought two fire trucks to be seen in the parking lot so customers would know this was the restaurant to go to for lunch or dinner. Some of the firefighters came from local cities like Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Riverside County station 71, Loma Linda Fire station and Coachella to name a few. This is always a fun event for both customers and firefighters.

Cathedral City police officers spent the evening talking to several hundred people that came to meet the brand new Chief and view the police department vehicles. For some officers, this was their day off that they used to participate in this event. There were Men and Women officers along with police cadets to speak to the visitors about the Police Department. Officers Larry Sanfillippo and Charlie Siquelros showed Zachary and Aiden Siquelros how to wear protective armor and how heavy and hot it is. Kids were shown the inside of the police car that carried a lot of the gear needed by police officers. Visitors got to inspect the Operations Center Van that is used by officers during raids and crime scenes. Other children got to sit on the motorcycle with officers for photos.
Visitors were treated to lemonade, pizza and cookies from local businesses like Capizzi’s and Nicolino’s. The new Police Chief was in the food area speaking to everyone who wanted to see and talk to him about his new role as Chief. The children seemed so excited to see the officers and talk to them. His opening remarks were to state, “I am here in the land of the free and the home of the brave.” (Just think of how many nations in our world, that you could not proclaim that statement!) Just as Pope Francis was addressing Congress, headlines spread the horrid news that more than 700 hundred people lost their lives during the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Meanwhile, lawmakers and world leaders are embroiled in addressing challenges at the forefront of the Pope’s rallying cry for climate change, the Syrian migrant crisis, immigration reform, the fight against poverty and Wall Street reform. On their role as lawmakers, Pope Francis told members of Congress that “legislative activity is always best based on care for the people. To this you have been invited, called and convened.” Said the Pope: “The challenges facing us today call for a renewal of that spirit of cooperation, which has accomplished so much good throughout the history of the United States.” Working together as a people to accomplish our goals is what always has and always will work best. should take reasonable steps to maintain the common area and remedy known unsafe conditions. However, the issue of disabled access is very different. The association is required by state and federal Fair Housing laws to make reasonable accommodations at the request of disabled persons. What is “reasonable” can differ, depending upon the circumstances, but an association cannot tell disabled people to go elsewhere. If it is impossible to build a ramp from the garage, then that accommodation would probably be “unreasonable” and therefore not required by Fair Housing laws. In that case the answer is “sorry, it is not possible” rather than “just move.” Thanks for your question, Kelly

Pope Francis, A believer in man-made climate change, called “for a courageous and responsible effort for us to ‘redirect our steps,’ and to avert the most serious effects of the environmental deterioration caused by human activity. I am convinced that we can make a difference and I have no doubt that the United States — and this Congress — have an important role to play.” Saving Wall Street, in Pope Francis’s opinion “only reaffirms the absolute power of a financial system, a power which has no future and will only give rise to new crises after a slow, costly and only apparent recovery.” The pope condemned the way governments responded to the 2008 financial crisis, by “Saving banks at any cost; Making the public pay the price; and, Foregoing a firm commitment to reviewing and reforming the entire system.” The pope said, the crisis should have been treated as “an opportunity to develop a new economy, more attentive to ethical principles, and new ways of regulating speculative financial practices and virtual wealth. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Kelly Richardson: Would there be any use in asking for explanations of Condo, Townhouse, PUD, Patio Homes? Yours, D.F., Huntington Beach Dear D.F.: Two of these terms are legal, and two are not. “Townhouse” or “patio home” references the home’s architectural layout. A “townhouse” is normally a configuration in which neighbors may share a party wall, but nobody lives over or under another neighbor. Similarly, a “patio home” may or may not have attached homes which share a single driveway. These
are not legal terms, but are descriptive only. Townhouses could be condominium units, or planned development lots, or something else - it depends entirely upon the legal document which divided up the real estate into separate realty interests. Don’t be fooled by the appearance and assume the legal interest - we advise many planned development associations in which the homes are attached “townhouses”, and condo associations in which some or all of the condominiums are detached free standing residences. A condominium is a legal interest bearing no relationship to the shape or configuration of the building. A condominium will consist of a block of airspace, called the “separate interest” or “unit” and an undivided equal share in the “common area”, which is everything other than the units. The term “planned unit development” (aka “PUD”), while commonly used, is a misnomer, at least in California. It does appear in two sections in the current Civil Code, but both instances appear to be drafting errors and are sections outside of the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development September 30, 2015
Dear Mr. Richardson: In our condo complex, one set of stairs leading down to the garage lacks a handrail on the upper set of stairs. Another set of stairs is made of wood, but the railing is not suitable for a person with disabilities. A lower handrail on both sides of the railing would be easier. Is this a reasonable request for the HOA to install? I also inquired last year about a ramp to be installed going down to the garage, but was told it was impossible and if the elderly/ infirm cannot get around, they should just move. I would appreciate your thoughts in this situation. C.K., Solana Beach

Video of 92yo man singing to dying wife goes viral

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – The vast “sagebrush sea” that stretches for millions of acres from eastern California all the way to Montana got updated management plans Tuesday. That’s because the Bureau of Land Management issued 98 separate final landuse plans designed to balance conservation, recreation and development on sagebrush landscapes. Ken Rait, public lands director for the The Pew Charitable Trusts, said this is the largest landconservation initiative the BLM has ever undertaken - one that protects the animals while allowing
for ranching, development, hunting and other recreation. “The Records of Decision that the Bureau of Land Management has come out with are a significant step in bringing a responsible balance to development across the West and conservation of the sage-grouse,” he said. The plans were finalized at the same time the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that it will not list the greater sagegrouse under the Endangered Species Act. Matt Holloran, chief scientist for Wildlife Management Research Support, said the collaboration among disparate interests,
including environmentalists, ranchers, government agencies and oil and gas companies has been extraordinary - but it will take commitment from all parties to make this work. “For this effort to succeed as it’s been planned, I mean, all we have now are plans,” he said, “and for the success to happen, the plans need to be implemented.” Sagebrush habitat is home to hundreds of species, including mule deer, elk, pronghorn and golden eagles. Plan details are online at blm. gov. The Pew Charitable Trusts provided support for this reporting.
in the World War ll. The heartwarming moment was captured on camera by their granddaughter, Erin Solari, who posted the video online. Howard was held by his relatives as he is unable to stand unaided, while Laura “is now too weak to sing, but that doesn’t stop her from saying the words to him,” Solari wrote in a description to the video on YouTube. Her grandfather has also lost most of his hearing – so performing a song was true feat for him, while his wife suffers from macular degeneration and can only see shadows and light, she added. The man sang ‘You’ll Never Know,’ which was from the 1943 movie ‘Hello, Frisco, Hello’ and won an Oscar that year. Originally performed by Alice Faye, it was later recorded by numerous artists, including Frank Sinatra and Dick Haymes. The version of the song used in the video was performed by Rosemary Clooney with Harry James (1952). “Our family prefers this version because everyone always
said Grandma had a voice just like Rosemary Clooney,” Solari wrote. She says when Howard and Laura renewed their wows after fifty years of marriage, they performed “You’ll Never Know” as a duet at the family reception. Since the video was posted, there has been a slight improvement in the Laura’s health as “all the outpouring of love lifted everyone’s spirits... including Grandma’s,” Solari wrote. Her grandmother, who was initially given a week to live, was released from hospice “to go back home to live out her remaining few days,” she added. The commentators online called Howard and Laura an example for themselves, praising their love and the people from the “Great Generation.” “Such a sad and a beautiful video at the same time. We all must die someday, but love never dies. They will be together forever,” a commentator wrote on YouTube. While another person confessed to shedding a lot of tears over the clip, adding that he “started to believe in love now.”

GMO Labeling: Safe or Dark?
By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. – It already passed the U.S. House, but there is no stopping the debate over whether the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act really does inform New England consumers about GMO food. Kate Snyder, director of membership and programs with the New England Farmers Union, says it’s hard enough to make sense of food labels. She says consumers need accurate information as to when GMOs, also known as genetically modified organisms, end up on the dinner table. “Labeling is good for
consumers and for farmers, because the relationship between a farmer and a consumer is based on trust, she says. “Transparency in labeling builds that trust. Supporters of the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act say it will continue voluntary consultation with the FDA about foods derived from new plant varieties. Opponents call it the DARK Act, which stands for “Deny Americans the Right to Know when GMOS are in the food chain. Snyder says the matter is less about using GMOs and having “one tool in the tool box, than it is about being transparent with consumers.
“Farmers see the benefit of GMOs and we understand that, she says. “We are not anti-technology. We believe that farmers have the right to choose the farming practices that work for them. Citing poll after poll, Snyder says consumers want transparency in food labeling, and she adds that the New England Farmers Union believes producers want to share that information with them. The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act (HR 1599) passed the House by a wide margin in July, and is expected to be a top item for debate in the Senate this fall.
By Terry Tang Maya Donnelly awoke to what sounded like thunder in the early morning hours, but dismissed it as a typical monsoon storm and went back to sleep. Later that morning, she looked in the carport at her home in Nogales, near the U.S.Mexico border, and saw pieces of wood on the ground. She found a bulky bundle wrapped in black plastic. Inside was roughly 26 pounds of marijuana - a package that authorities say was worth $10,000 and likely
was dropped there accidentally by a drug smuggler’s aircraft. “It’s all right on top of our dog’s house, Donnelly said of the Sept. 8 incident, which was first reported by the Nogales International newspaper. “It just made a perfectly round hole through our carport. Living near the border, Donnelly said she assumed the object was drugs. She immediately called her husband, Bill, who told her to call 911. The couple said officers who responded told them an ultralight aircraft smuggling marijuana from Mexico had
probably let part of its load go early by accident before dropping the rest farther north, the newspaper reported. Nogales Police Chief Derek Arnson said it’s the first time in his three-year tenure that he’s ever seen a load of drugs hit a building. “Someone definitely made a mistake, and who knows what the outcome of that mistake might be for them, Arnson said. Police are trying to determine whether the bundle was transported by an aircraft or a pilotless drone. Such runs
usually occur at night. Maya Donnelly said she thinks it’s unlikely someone will come looking for the drugs, which are now in police custody. Arnson agreed but said police have boosted patrols in the Donnellys neighborhood for now. The family will have to pay the estimated $500 in repairs, as well as pay for a new home for their German Shepherd, Hulk. But the scenario could have been much worse for the couple and their three teenage daughters. “Where it landed was clear
on the other side of the house from the bedrooms, Maya Donnelly said. “We were lucky in that sense. Friends and family also have gotten a laugh. Several joked that the couple could have profited from the surprise package. “That’s what everybody says: ‘Why did you call 911?’ Maya Donnelly said. “But how can you have a clear conscience, right? We could have made lots of home repairs with that. Source KMIR
By Desert Star Staff While the Volkswagen emissions scandal has prompted investigations into other car brands in both Europe and the US, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk said the time has come to give up on fossil fuels and embrace new technology. Speaking to reporters recently, Musk said that the Volkswagen fallout over doesn’t mean there’s a lack of a faith in green technology, but the opposite. “What Volkswagen is really showing is that we’ve reached the limit of what’s possible with diesel and gasoline, Musk said. “The time I think has come to move to a new generation of technology. Te s l a m a n u f a c t u r e s luxury electric cars powered by rechargeable lithium-ion
batteries and, for now, relies on electricity from a power grid that burns fossil fuels. The cars are produced in a factory in Fremont, California. The company is also building a battery-making facility in Nevada, and Musk is looking for places to build a factory to produce Tesla vehicles in Europe. He told reporters that Flanders, Belgium might be a possible location for the factory. The emissions scandal first came to light when the US Environmental Protection Agency announced that re s e a rc h e r s d i s c o v e re d irregularities in the performance of Volkswagen’s 4-cylinder diesel cars from 2009 through 2015. On Monday, meanwhile, a European environmental group said it had found some
new models of Mercedes, Volkswagen and BMW vehicles that consume more gasoline than their lab tests say they do, reported Fox News. The group, Transport & Environment, said its research shows that the gap between lab test results for fuel economy and real-world performance rose last year to 40 percent on average – up drastically from 8 percent in 2001. It also found that the difference for Mercedes A, C and E class models was over 50 percent. The group said it had found
no proof the cars were equipped with “defeat devices like those installed on Volkswagen vehicles, but its discovery has led to a wider probe into “defeat devices that covers gasoline cars as well. Volkswagen admitted that 11 million of its diesel-powered vehicles around the world were fitted with software allowing them to sidestep emissions rules. The company set aside $7.3 billion to deal with the fallout. Reports suggest they could be looking at billions in fines, and a number of countries
have opened investigations of their own. The EPA told automakers last week that it will begin road tests of all new vehicle models, and vehicles already on the road, to examine emissions claims following the exposure of the Volkswagen scandal, according to USA Today. The agency sent a letter to manufacturers notifying them that it will no longer rely exclusively on laboratory testing to validate emissions performance.

Extreme sports star dies in California skydiving accident
By Julie Carr Smyth By Paul Elias SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A skier and BASE jumper who regularly appeared on an MTV show about extreme sports was killed after crashing into a tree during a skydiving stunt at a Northern California golf course, authorities said. Erik Roner, 39, of Tahoe City, died Monday as he performed with other skydivers before a golf tournament in Squaw Valley, about 5 miles from Lake Tahoe’s northwest shore, Placer County sheriff’s Capt. Dennis Walsh said. Roy Tuscany, a friend of Roner’s, said he watched as two other parachutists landed safely on the golf course’s fairway but then looked on in horror as Roner slammed hard into a tree about 25 to 30 feet above the ground. He said Roner’s parachute got tangled in the tree and Roner dangled there while many on the ground scrambled to find ladders and other means to get to him. At one point, several people tried to stand on one another’s shoulders to reach him. “There’s no protocol for this kind of rescue,” Tuscany said.
“There’s no manual. It was just horrible.” Authorities were not able to remove Roner from the tree, and he died at the scene, Walsh said. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the death. “Erik was a beautiful man, great father, wonderful friend and the love of my life,” his wife, Annika Roner, said in a statement. Roner’s death comes four months after world-famous wingsuit flyer Dean Potter and fellow adventurer Graham Hunt died after leaping from Taft Point, 3,500 feet above Yosemite Valley, and crashing into a ridgeline. Roner, a professional skier and avid BASE jumper, was known for being part of “Nitro Circus,” an MTV show centered around freestyle motocross rider Travis Pastrana and his friends who are extreme-sports athletes. He also hosted the TV show “Locals” on sports network Outside Television. “Nitro Circus” ended in 2009 after two seasons. “Nitro Circus Live,” on which Roner also appeared, aired on MTV2 for four seasons until last year,

Zuckerberg & Gates push for universal internet access
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, pop star Bono and many others have thrown their support behind a pledge to bring internet access to everyone in
the world by 2020. Zuckerberg’s “Connect the World” campaign partnered with One, Bono’s anti-poverty organization, to release the Connectivity Declaration during
the United Nations General Assembly on Monday. “When people have access to the tools and knowledge of the internet, they have access to opportunities that make life better
for all of us,” the declaration said. “The internet belongs to everyone. It should be accessible by everyone.” Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post that internet access is an essential part of fighting destitution, noting that for every 10 people that are connected to the internet, roughly one person is lifted out of poverty. “If we connect the more than four billion people not yet online, we have a historic opportunity to lift the entire world in the coming decades,” he wrote. The declaration was also signed by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world’s largest charitable organizations, and Mo Ibrahim, a Sudanese-British billionaire who rewards African leaders who demonstrate good governance with large cash payouts. By Desert Star Staff SAN DIEGO - A quick search for web developer jobs in California turns up 10,000 positions, open, right now. But many young people don’t have the skills to write code, and can’t afford college or $10,000 for a coding boot camp. Consequently, many companies are sending the jobs overseas. But a unique non-profit
called SoftStack Factory is trying to reverse those trends. Today they’re starting their first free 12-week coding boot camp in San Diego. SoftStack Factory CEO Harold Gottschalk says the program harnesses the talents of low-income students and gives companies trained local workers, helping keep jobs on American soil.
“It’s a great opportunity, they’re gonna get really exposed to some really cool technology, they’ll learn how to build hybrid mobile apps,” says Gottschalk. “And then our intention is to try to find companies that are willing to take them on.” SoftStack is looking for businesses to sponsor the boot camps and in return the students will produce an
app for the company. Gottschalk would like to train up to 200 students a year and offer the course in multiple locations. “Eventually, we’d like to see if we can replicate that model outside of San Diego in other places in California or other places around the country,” he says. NASA confirms: Mars has liquid water
For the first time, NASA has confirmed the existence of liquid water on the surface of Mars, according to new research announced Monday. The finding stems from data and analysis by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has verified that the dark, seasonal streaks that have appeared on Mars’ surface come from briny water flows. MRO found evidence of narrow channels containing water cut into cliff walls through Mars’ equatorial band, though the source and chemistry of the water is yet unknown. The streaks, or recurring slope lineae, appear during the warmer summer months on the Red Planet. They disappear when the temperature drops. The findings advance the potentiality for life on Mars, researchers said. While it is likely that life exists in the crust of Mars, the new findings further the possibility of life closer to the surface of the planet, Alfred McEwen, a planetary scientist with Arizona State University, said during a NASA press conference. “It took multiple spacecraft over several years to solve this mystery, and now we know there is liquid water on the surface of this cold, desert planet,” said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. “It seems that the more we study Mars, the more we learn how life could be supported and where there are resources to support life in the future.”

Scientists had previously run into difficulties analyzing the streaks, which measure less than 16 feet, or 5 meters, wide. The MRO’s instruments were able to process trace measurements, and scientists successfully observed the findings thanks to a computer program that can focus in on individual pixels. MRO’s data was then compared with highresolution images of the slopes. Scientists found a match between their locations and the presence of hydrated salts. “We’re not claiming that we found ... evidence of liquid water. We found hydrated salts,” said Lujendra Ojha, a graduate student at Georgia Institute of Technology and lead author of the report, published in the journal Nature Geosciences. While NASA has rushed to announce the findings, Ojha expressed reserve.
“It’s a little bit over-the-top announcement by NASA,” Ojha said. “There’s so many mysteries to be solved about RSL (recurring slope line).” The presence of water on Mars in the form of ice caps has been known for years. However, proof of liquid water on the Red Planet will have major ramifications for the study of Mars. It may mean that microbial life may still survive under the Martian surface, if there ever was any in the first place. The discovery “confirms that water is playing a role in these features,” according to McEwen. “We don’t know that it’s coming from the subsurface. It could come from the atmosphere.” NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity previously found evidence that Mars had suitable conditions for microbial life that existed at some point in the past.
During the summer, Mars can reach up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit along its equator. Ojha and his research team found that this high temperature -- far from the planet’s average of -80 degrees Fahrenheit -allowed salty water to flow down the planet’s slopes. The water combines with perchlorates to form a brine solution that helps the water to remain a liquid as temperatures drop. “We found the hydrated salts only when the seasonal features were widest, which suggests that either the dark streaks themselves or a process that forms them is the source of the hydration. In either case, the detection of hydrated salts on these slopes means that water plays a vital role in the formation of these streaks,” Ojha said.

C E N T E R S TA G E The Atlantic Theater Company Presents “These Paper Bullets!” WITH BEVERLY COHN
As with most comedies, there is a happy ending as Claude (Damon Daunno) and Higgy (Ariana Venturi) declare their love for each other so that “All’s Well That Ends Well.” Photo by Michael Lamont
If you decide to see “These Paper Bullets,!” subtitled “A Modish Ripoff of William Shakespeare,” I will try to help you “Brush Up On Your Shakespeare” by providing a brief description of the cast of characters and action; otherwise, if I may paraphrase a quote a from “Macbeth” you might conclude that the evening was “…full of sound and fury signifying nothing.” Interspersing Shakespeare’s original language with more contemporary words, Rolan Jones’ overwritten script has moved the shenanigans from the familiar setting of Messina to London, during the hey day of the swinging mod era, when women wanted to look like Twiggy, wore miniskirts with gogo boots, topped with mod or cropped hairstyles. Augmenting “the look,” was an abundance of drugs, with Quaaludes and Vodka chasers being the drugs of choice. Stir in lots of sex, a Beetles look-alike band named “The Quartos,” playing lots
of catchy rock ‘n’ roll songs written by Billie Joe Armstrong, and you’ll have an overall picture of what is taking place on that crowded stage. Directed by Jackson Gay, a lot of the frenetic, hard-to-follow craziness in takes place in the Messina Hotel, which is owned by Leo Messina, (Nick Ullett.) His daughter Higgy (Ariana Venturi,) is habitually stoned. She is in love with Claude (Damon Daunn,) a Quartos band member and popular teenage idol. The other musicians are Pedro (James Barry,) who comes up with some questionable schemes, Balth (Lucas Papaelias,) and Ben (Justin Kirk,) a cynical former solder whose fans throw themselves at his feet begging to have his children. Screaming girls are depicted through giant projections designed by Nicholas Hussong, with other huge projections supporting the current on-stage action. Every Shakespeare play has a villain and in this one his name is
Don Best (Adam O’Byrne.) Don is really pissed off as he was fired as the band’s drummer and is now relegated to the position of “roadie.” To get even, he concocts a diabolical scheme to sabotage the upcoming nuptials between Higgy and Claude by doctoring a photograph showing Higgy in a sex act with Boris (Rod McLachlan.) The woman in that photograph is actually her “friend” Ulcie (Keira Naughton.) In a nasty act of vengeance, Don ceremoniously presents the photo at Higgy and Claude’s highly publicized nuptials, at which point Claude walks out of the wedding in disgust. In an effort to find out who was behind this terrible plot, dad tells everyone that Higgy became despondent and died but in reality, she has locked herself away in her room, wailing continuously for several weeks. Add to the mix Bea (Nicole Parker,) a successful fashion designer who has very protective instincts towards her stoner cousin Higgy. Bea is secretly in love with her former lover Ben, who is basically commitment phobic. Veiling their real feelings for each other, the repartee between them is hostile, but comic. Not to worry, though, as
By Carlos Herrera COACHELLA, Ca. - After years of use, Grapefruit Boulevard has become damaged. According to drivers who use this road daily, the damaged pavements are costing them a lot of money. Grapefruit Boulevard is a very busy road in Coachella. The street basically parallels Highway 86. According to experts, twelve to fifteen thousand vehicles use it every day. “It is kind of really damaged, its been like this for a while now,” local auto repair technician Adrian Rodriguez said. Semis, train
tracks and the daily heavy traffic on that road causes vibration to transfer onto the road surface. Cars tend to get more damaged due to the pot holes on the road. “Constant vibrations in the vehicle causes all the moving parts to wear out faster than normal,” Rodriguez added. Another issue drivers are facing is flat tires. Pot holes can be found throughout Grapefruit Boulevard. According to officials of the City of Coachella, they are aware of the problem. The city is currently working on a big transportation
project, which includes fixing that road. “The bridge project will be completed by the end of October and one of the last phases of work is to repave Grapefruit Blvd,” City of Coachella Engineer Jonathan Hoy said. Over the next week or two the city will be repaving the street between Avenue 52 and Avenue 54 he added. After the project is completed, Grapefruit Boulevard will look completely different. Meanwhile, city officials want to remind drivers to be careful and watch out for pot holes in the area. Source KMIR

truelove prevails in the end. Rounding out the list of zany characters are the inept, bungling Scotland Yard detectives. The squad consists of Mr. Berry (Greg Stuhr,) who like Mrs. Malaprop,* fractures the English language; Mr. Cake (Tony Mann;) Mr. Urges/ Reverend (Brad Heberlee;) and Mr. Crumpet (Christopher Geary as well as the Queen in drag.) In order to find out what everyone is doing, these Inspector Clouseautype nitwits plant bugged lampshades in the hotel to find out what everyone is up to. Reporting on the activities of “The Quartos” is Paulina Noble (Kate Blumberg,) an obnoxious, but funny BBC reporter who delivers a comical blow-byblow description of the antics, including the wedding disaster. With a not so subtle reference to The Beatles, when the wedding between Higgy and Claude finally takes place, the groom asks for the “ring-o,” and presumably everyone lives happily ever after or in the words of the Bard, All’s Well That Ends Well.” The production values are excellent with the revolving set by Michael Yeargan creating the Messina Hotel, recording studio, Bea’s dress shop, or a stage for “live”performances by
“The Quartos.” Jessica Ford’s costumes capture the look of the freewheeling 60s. Music director Julie McBride and Broken Chord’s sound design and incidental music, adds to the overall musical content of the play, which is the most satisfying component. Paul Whitaker’s lighting design, drenched the stage in cotton-candy colors and like that confection, this production leaves you with an enjoyable sugary aftertaste, but not much substance. *A character made famous for her usage of incorrect words that almost sound the same. Photo by V. Baranovsky The musical version of “Cinderella” delighted audiences of all ages when it opened at the Ahmanson Theatre early in the new year. This was followed by the live-action Disney film “Cinderella,” now available on Blu-ray and DVD. And the good news is, this beloved fairytale princess will be back in Los Angeles in October when St. Petersberg’s world-renowned Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra (formerly the Kirov Ballet) opens the 12th season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center with the Southern California premiere of Alexi Ratmansky’s “Cinderella.“ There will be five performances only, October 8-11. “Cinderella,” first performed in March 2002, catapulted the choreographer onto the world stage. In his ballet, Ratmansky took a fresh look at the classic story, imbuing his
work with vibrant choreography, feisty humor and a glamorous 1930s twist. He combined the grand spectacle of ballet from Soviet Russia with innovative choreography that has a contemporary edge, presenting audiences with endearing characters and a sense of sophistication. In his ballet Cinderella is portrayed as a lonely dreamer and her stepmother is depicted as a vicious, tantrum-prone social climber. The choreography builds to a pas de deux of aching beauty and tenderness between Cinderella and her prince. The performances are enhanced by spectacular sets and costumes that portray the glamour of a modern 20th century world.. In the PBS Masterpiece Mystery “Arthur & George,” the world’s greatest crime writer, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, turns detective. Martin Clunes (“Doc Martin”) stars as Sir Arthur, creator of Sherlock Holmes, who is outraged by what he feels is a great injustice to an AngloIndian solicitor. When the man’s plight is brought to his attention he decides to get to the truth on his own, using the methods employed by his fictional super sleuth, Sherlock. The story begins shortly after

Beyond Trick-or-Treating: Fun Family Activities for Halloween Season
Trick-or-treating may be the standard Halloween tradition for most American families, but the holiday has branched out extensively over the last decade. Today, Americans spend over one billion dollars visiting Halloween-themed attractions. Where are they going, and what are the best activities for your family? The experts at Hauntworld.com are offering some spooky answers in this www.desertstarweekly.com
ultimate fall to-do list. Farm Fun: Many farms offer tons of fall activities ideal for families with young children, including picking the perfect carving pumpkin, finding your way out of a corn maze and drinking homemade apple cider. Other fun activities include pony rides, hay mazes, non-spooky hayrides, petting zoos and even shooting pumpkin cannons. Ghost Tours: Ghost hunting
television shows have really increased the popularity in finding haunts and eerie tours. Learn more about your local area’s spooky history by taking family or out of town guests to haunted mansions, cemeteries, prisons and more. Zombie Runs: What could be scarier than a 5K run? One with zombies of course! Zombie runs are a good time for the whole family, providing a fun reason to get kids and teens moving, using obstacle courses, contests, prizes and more as incentives. Haunted Hayrides: Hayrides can be as sophisticated as a Hollywood movie, complete with fog machines and lights. Some have even adopted new twists. For example, on a zombie paintball hayride, guests go on a high adrenaline adventure, hunting and shooting zombies with paintballs. Haunted hayrides make guests and especially smaller kids feel September 30, 2015
safe as they ride in groups. Home Haunts: Americans are now decorating their yards and homes into spooky graveyards with high tech lights, animations and more. Some homeowners take it further by also decorating their home’s interiors and creating mazes in the garage or backyard. Finding a spooky home haunt or neighborhood near you can be a great Halloween activity to do if you’re on a budget. For tips and tricks on haunting your own house, visit www. hauntedhousesupplies.com. Escape Rooms: Escape rooms offer an immersive and interactive experience like none other. These Halloween-themed attractions involve working together to solve puzzles and riddles in order to escape a room in under an hour. Haunted Houses: Haunted houses come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from three-dimensional black light
attractions to haunted trails to major scream parks. Haunted houses also change regularly, so it may be very different from visit to visit. Today, most haunted attractions don’t rely as much on blood and guts as they do on interactive special effects, sophisticated costumes, story lines and computer-generated imagery. To celebrate the scary side of Halloween, get the family together for an unforgettable night filled with fun and screams. To find America’s scariest haunted houses, trickiest corn mazes, spookiest zombie runs and every pumpkin patch, ghost tour and escape room near you, you can review a comprehensive directory of these attractions at www.Hauntworld.com. While tradition never gets old, novel Halloween activities provide different thrills than a standard trick-or-treat trip around the block. Source KMIR

MUSIC Embrace rock, synthpop, blues and country excellence BY ROBERT KINSLER
Rock greats the Zombies, synthpop-dance rock heroes New Order, blues harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite and country music giant George Strait have all released outstanding new albums.
Artist: The Zombies Title: Still Got That Hunger (The End Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Zombies, The Kinks Tell me more: It makes perfect sense that a band named the Zombies would outlive and artistically thrive beyond every one of its 1960s contemporaries. While fellow British bands the Who and Rolling Stones sometimes tour and occasionally record, it is truly the Zombies that impress with the same power the quintet displayed when they burst on the rock scene 50+ years ago. On the band’s aptly-named forthcoming collection “Still Got That Hunger” (available Oct. 9 via The End Records), singer Colin Blunstone and keyboardist Rod Argent lead an ensemble that masterfully blends the jazz-tinged
psychedelic rock they pioneered in the early ‘60s with blues and contemporary styles. Across “Still Got That Hunger,” Blunstone sings with power, range and emotion; the full band (including the aforementioned Argent, drummer Steve Rodford, lead guitarist Tom Toomey and bassist Jim Rodford) play with nuanced emotion and authority. The top-flight musicianship and vocals wouldn’t mean a thing without brilliant songwriting and that’s where the Zombies reconnect with the spirit of their ‘60s beginnings. Just as the band’s 1968 masterwork “Odessey & Oracle” blended a number of styles together in the creation of something greater, “Still Got That Hunger” allows the Zombies to magically conjure up that approach here. Baroque pop (“Chasing the Past,” “Never Get Over You”), jazz-rock (“New York,” “And We Were Young Again”), blues (“Edge of the Rainbow”) and a dash of psychedelia throughout the 10-song album work wonders. Artist: New Order Title: Music Complete (Mute) You might like if you enjoy: New Order, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys Tell me more: Not many synthpop and dance rock bands to emerge in the 1980s have soldiered on without their sound becoming dated. New Order has outdistanced the competition for sure and remained more than relevant; listening to the best tracks on the British outfit’s 9th proper studio album (“Music Complete”) is to hear songs that would have lit up dance clubs 30 years ago and likely will today too. Coming a full decade after 2005’s epic “Waiting for the Sirens’ Call,” the ensuing span saw the departure of founding bassist Peter Hook and return of original keyboardist Gillian Gilbert. Whatever the dynamics, singer Bernard Sumner and company deliver propulsive and driving dance rock throughout, layering the infectious beats with compelling melodies and textures. Highlights include the longing
“Restless,” ambitious “Plastic” Been Your Friend,” buoyant and sweeping “Academic.” harmonica-anchored “My Kinda Information: NewOrderNow.net. Easy Ways for Parents to Add Interactive Play Throughout the Day By Desert Star Staff A child’s development at an early age sets the stage for future success, and interactive play can have a big impact. Not only does it expand a child’s imagination and social skills, but it can also help develop gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and hand and finger strength. With success at play, children not only build muscle skills, but also cognitive skills that lay the foundation for aptitude in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. And the best part? Parents can easily provide these benefits during daily routines. 1. Mealtime: Allowing your child to be a little helper in the kitchen not only teaches some meal preparation skills, but also helps develop motor skills. Good for hand and arm strengthening, your little chef can help smash potatoes, knead dough, stir foods and more. 2. Playtime: Playtime is as much of a daily activity as

bedtime or mealtime, and it’s an important part of your child’s day. Look for toys that are fun and also help children develop the skills they need, such as the Step2 WonderBall Fun House, an interactive playhouse that helps toddlers develop handeye coordination with put-andtake play using included colorful balls. Features like tube mazes and an open play concept will enhance your little creative player’s imagination in no time. 3. Bath Time: If you’ve ever had to wrestle your child into the bathtub, you know bath time isn’t always enjoyable. There are all sorts of bath time toys available, but some of the best ones are items you already have in your home. To work on fine motor skills, try including household objects into your child’s bath routine: plastic cups for pouring water back and forth, strainers from your kitchen and any toys that promote a squeezing motion. Even the act of wringing out a wet washcloth can help develop a child’s hand muscles.
4. Bedtime: Many parents can relate to the struggle of getting children to bed. Make bedtime a time of day that your child looks forward to, by bringing imagination to life with a fun and comfortable bed like the Step2 Hot Wheels Toddler-toTwin Race Car Bed. It provides an easy transition from a crib to a September 30, 2015
toddler bed and encourages your little race car driver to enjoy when it’s time to go to sleep. Toddlers can tap the car headlights on and off, and use the race car tracks located on each side of the bed to race their favorite Hot Wheels cars. When incorporated throughout the day, interactive
play can be beneficial for both parent and child. Small, but meaningful, everyday tasks can help your child develop and grow. Continue to have fun and encourage your child along the way as you watch his or her confidence and skills increase. Statepoint www.desertstarweekly.com
Dog Sweeps In North Shore and Mecca
By Carlos Herrera NORTH SHORE, Ca. Riverside County Department of Animal Services conducted a dog sweep in North Shore and Mecca today to keep loose dogs off the street. Twenty dogs were impounded in North Shore and 9 in Mecca. Animal Services conducts a dog sweep in North Shore about three times a year. Today’s sweep was not initially scheduled, but it was actually moved because of the recent pit bull attacks that happened a couple of weeks ago. The recent attacks killed a man and severely injured several others. The department has
received many calls about a lot of loose dogs in the community. People who live in North Shore said they are concerned about their safety with dogs roaming around the area. The three-hour sweep began at 6 a.m. ten animal control officers went out to North Shore to try and capture loose dogs. Ten dogs were impounded in that unincorporated town in the East Valley. The dogs that were impounded were different mixes. Officers used tranquilizer guns and catching poles to take the dogs into custody. According to officers, the biggest challenge they had was dogs running
around in the open desert, which made it very difficult to corner them. “There is a lot of open desert. You’ve got community and the suddenly vacant opportunities and the dogs have the ability to roam wherever they want so it really does take multiple officers to try and corner the dog,” Riverside County Department of Animal Services Public Information Officer John Welsh said. The 29 dogs that were captured in North Shore and Mecca were taken to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms. According to North Shore
residents, they are used to seeing loose dogs on the street especially early in the morning. They told us they see dogs at the school bus stop every morning.
We spoke to kids at the bus stop after the sweep, they told us they feel safer after most loose dogs were impounded. Source KMIR

UN serves world leaders ‘landfill salad’ to highlight food waste By Desert Star Staff When 30 world leaders sat down to lunch at the United Nations, they weren’t treated to a fancy meal that the political crème de la crème are accustomed to. Instead, they ate items like “landfill salad,” “chickpea water” and “repurposed bread bun.” The US-themed menu at the UN’s Sunday lunch was prepared by world-renowned chefs, and designed to highlight food waste and how agricultural production contributes to climate change. It was a far cry from Monday’s lunch, where heads of state dined on smoked trout and cucumber timbale, caramelised beef short ribs and spiced wild berry compote. US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin toasted each other with glasses of rosé at the luncheon. “It’s the prototypical American meal but turned on its head,” prominent New York chef Dan Barber, who helped design
the menu, told AFP. “Instead of the beef, we’re going to eat the corn that feeds the beef. The challenge is to create something truly delicious out of what we would otherwise throw away.” Barber and former White House chef Sam Kass worked together to create the vegetarian meal. Kass is known as the architect of US First Lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity campaign called Let’s Move. “Our lunch was produced from food that would otherwise end up in landfills, emitting methane, a potent greenhouse gas,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Ban told reporters. Food production and agriculture contribute as much to climate change as transportation does, he noted. “More than a third of all food produced worldwide ‒ over one billion tonnes of edible food each year ‒ goes to waste,” Ban said. “That is shameful when so many people suffer from hunger.”
According to UN figures, more than a quarter ‒ 28 percent ‒ of agricultural lands around the world go to produce food that is lost or wasted, the equivalent of 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon responsible for climate change. So Barber and Kass composed lunch items out of compost. The “landfill salad” was made from unwanted vegetable scraps salvaged from the waste of big food producers, rejected apples and pears, and dressed with the liquid drained from a can of chickpeas. “Spent grain bread” was baked from grain mash normally tossed out by brewers and distilleries. The veggie burger consisted of “off-grade vegetables,” cucumber scraps from the pickling industry, “pulp left over from juicing,” and was served on The Navy has agreed to limit sonar use to protect marine mammals from disorientaa “repurposed bread bun.” “Cow tion and harm. Gunman Kills Two, Injures Others In Banning By Julie Buehler Two men are dead and others are injured after a gunman shot at vehicles and assaulted residents in Banning. Police first received calls of shots fired at 11:36 am Saturday, as what was described as a white or Hispanic man in a blue shirt driving a white SUV shot into another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead while the passenger was taken to the hospital. Shortly thereafter, Banning police received calls of another shooting coming from a white SUV and a man wearing a blue shirt firing into other vehicles. Minor injuries were sustained in that incident. Less than 20 minutes after the first calls were made to police, an assault occurred at an AM/PM off 22nd and Ramsey. The victim was in the

parking lot and assaulted with a weapon, although officers would not say what kind of weapon, but the assailant fit the same description of the shooter. Shortly after that call was made, another call came into police dispatch reporting a vehicle crash into a wall and the driver had perished. Police do not know if the incident is related to the shootings and assault, but they are including it in the investigation due to the proximity of the other incidents. The suspect was then seen trying to break into another vehicle occupied by a woman and her children, asking them if they had seen his children. Beaumont police apprehended the suspect in Beaumont. Reader Advisory: The National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the above classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer employment but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it is illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. Toll free numbers may or may not reach Canada. California law requires that contractors taking jobs that total $500 or more (labor and/ or materials) must be licensed by the Contractors State License Board. State law also requires that contractors include their license number on all advertising. You can check the status of your licensed contractor at www.cslb. ca.gov or 800-321-CSLB

Report: More Tiny Babies Surviving and Thriving KANSAS CITY, Mo. – It’s good news for the tiniest and most vulnerable among us. Thanks to changes in care practices and other advances, survival rates for extreme preterm infants – sometimes called “micro preemies” – are on the rise. The study from the National Institutes of Health research network examined the cases of more than 34,000 babies over two decades, born between 22 and 28 weeks gestation at facilities across the country, including Children’s Mercy. Between 2009 and 2012, survival rates for babies born at 23 weeks increased from 27 percent to 33 percent, which Children’s Mercy pediatric neonatologist Dr. William Truog calls “promising.” “There is continuing reason for optimism for these children,”
he says. “At the same time, we extremely premature infants, know that being born with this there is simply no substitute for degree of prematurity that the a healthy full-term pregnancy. course is long, difficult, and the “Every week or two that risk of long-term developmental problems is still substantially higher.” Truog, one of the co-authors of the study, says standardizing certain practices, like giving a mother in early labor a short course of steroids to boost the baby’s lungs, has been a significant factor. According to the CDC, about 11 percent of babies in the U.S. are born preterm, or before 37 weeks. Of those, about one percent are born before 28 weeks. Truog says that equates to roughly one in every 100 births, a rate he says is nearly twice as high as some other developed countries. He stresses that while modern medicine has made great strides toward treating

Aztecs Football Waits Nine Years for Victory and Flag By Dan Marinelli LA QUINTA – A lot has happened over the last nine years but what has become a constant throughout the previous almost-decade is the La Quinta Blackhawks football team’s dominance over its Desert Valley League rival Palm Desert Aztecs. The Victory Flag is awarded to the winner between the Aztecs and the Blackhawks – and La Quinta, as well as co-dominate the league for the majority of the decade, has brought home the symbolic flag each of the last nine years. 2015, however, has a very different feel for Blackhawks head coach Dan Armstrong, who found his kids entering last Friday’s game against his longtime cook-street enemies with the worst record his team has had (0-4) in at least 10 years. Needless say, recapturing the flag would not be a cakewalk for the defending 2014 DVL champions – what a difference a year makes. The Blackhawks did lose the best running back in the DVL last year, Chris Toribio, but Armstrong loses talent every year and manages to reload for the following season. Unlike 2014 and before, this is different. U n c h a r a c t e r i s t i c a l l y, the Blackhawks have been outscored in the first four games 147-33 and the Aztecs – who have not beaten their rival in nine seasons – could smell the blood in the water. Not to mention, La Quinta was without a consistent running game, which, along with a solid defense has been Armstrong’s quite successful coaching M.O. Even with all the trials and tribulations of a down season, it

Bush was in office. A game that with all that has gone wrong for the defending champs this year, maybe, just maybe, the ‘Hawks would find the motivation to turn things around and salvage the rest of the season, starting with recapturing the Victory Flag. Unlike last year’s 49-14 route, the 2015 game finished fairly close, with the Aztecs putting nine-years worth of frustrations into the first two quarters. In addition to a field goal and two Beau Berryhill rushing touchdowns, Brian Devlin hurled a 28-yard touchdown pass to Dakota Romero giving Palm Desert the 24-7 halftime lead. Sensing the lethargy from La Quinta, the Aztecs could almost touch the Victory Flag but with a whole half left to play, there was
way too much time to celebrate – despite the lopsided score. In the third quarter, the Aztecs were finally outscored 7-3. Andrew Garcia tossed a 55-yard pass to Justin Anderson, yet the Blackhawks were still trailing 2714 with justa quarter. In the past, odd things have happened to flip the script in this entertaining high school football rivalry. This year would not feature any late game heroics or dramatic theatrics. Nope. Garcia managed to hurl one more 73-yard touchdown to Anderson to bring the score to within seven, but that would be the last time the Blackhawks saw the end zone. The Aztecs won the game 27-20, took over the Victory Flag from La Quinta High School Principal Rebecca Cook and most importantly, the bragging rights for the entire year. “A lot of frustration, a lot of close losses, and we finally got over the hump,” Aztecs head
coach Pat Blackburn said in an interview. “I’m honored, but these guys did it.” Now that the rivalry game is over, both teams and focus on the remainder of the season. Through one DVL game, the Aztecs (1-0 DVL, 2-3 Overall) and Blackhawks (0-1 DVL, 0-5 Overall) are both still in position to win or tie for the league championship. Granted, for the Blackhawks to win it all, it will take some help from other teams. The Blackhawks are off to their worst start in years but there is still time for them to make something of 2015 and at the very least, play to improve for next season. La Quinta travels to Indio High School next week to take on the Rajahs at 7 pm. The Aztecs have a bye week this week and will return to action on Oct. 9 against the Rajahs at Palm Desert High school.
Tips to Protect Your Family Carbon Monoxide You want your home to be a safe retreat from danger. While there are numerous ways to improve home safety, fires are a common threat that you have the power to prevent with preparation. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and Energizer have teamed up each fall for the past 28 years to educate the public about how to improve in-home safety. The Change Your Clock Change Your Battery program reminds everyone to replace the batteries in their home’s smoke detectors when they change their clocks for daylight savings so they have functioning smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire nearly in half by providing an early warning. Having a fresh battery in your smoke detector plays a critical role in giving families the time needed to safely escape a home fire. “Fire safety education and proactive prevention can
DESERT HOT SPRINGS
minimize fire tragedies,” says Michelle Atkinson, Energizer Chief Consumer Officer. “We encourage families to discuss this important issue because we all have the power to reduce our risk.” As part of the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery initiative, they’ve created this handy home safety checklist: • Count your smoke alarms: Increase your fire safety efforts by ensuring there’s at least one smoke alarm less than 10 years old installed on every level of your home, including one in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. Take inventory of how many batteries are required to power these smoke alarms so that you can be prepared to keep them operational. • Change your batteries: Seventy-one percent of smoke alarms which failed to operate had missing, disconnected or dead batteries, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Change smoke
alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries annually. Stay on schedule by making it a family tradition to change your batteries on the same day you change your clocks back to standard time, this year on November 1. It’s a great way to use the extra hour “gained” from daylight saving time. • Check alarms and detectors: After inserting a fresh battery in each smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector, push the safety test button to ensure they work. Conduct this test monthly. Never disconnect smoke alarm batteries no matter how annoying the sound; remember: a “chirping” alarm signals a need for a fresh battery. • Replace smoke alarms: The IAFC recommends replacing smoke alarms every 10 years and having a combination of both ionization and photo electric smoke alarms to keep you alert to all types of home fires. • Change flashlight batteries: Keep flashlights with fresh September 30, 2015
batteries at your bedside. In the event of a fire, they can provide much needed assistance for finding the way out and signaling for help. • Get the family involved: Less than a quarter of U.S. families have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. Make sure family members, in particular children, know what the alarms and detectors sound like and what they should do if they go off. In addition to sponsoring this educational campaign, Energizer has donated more than five million batteries to fire departments over the years. To learn more about the Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery program, visit www. energizer.com/responsibility. Take action for the safety of your family and make sure you have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s the first step to a safer home. StatePoint

A bold and delightful comedy scores at Pasadena Playhouse
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The new buzzword in 21st century arts is “Diversity”. It’s been a long time in coming but it’s finally arrived. The world of entertainment has embraced diversity for some time, however, the full force of the movement hasn’t been seen or felt by audiences on the theatrical stages of America until recently. The venerable and renowned Pasadena Playhouse (the official State Theatre of California) under the 18 year artistic leadership of Sheldon Epps, has long been a leader in diversity, as witnessed by the creative artists who stage their productions and in its casting of their performers. Artistry, quality, and high professional standards have been hallmarks of Pasadena Playhouse productions for a long time. The current comedy production “Real Women Have Curves”, written by Josefina Lopez is skillfully directed by playhouse associate artistic director Seema Sueko. It’s a delightful comedy that shows off the indomitable spirit, grit, and power of women in our society, who when they bond, can do anything as songwriter Helen Reddy’s anthem of the 1960’s women’s movement proclaimed, “I Am Woman … If I have to, I can do anything… I am invincible”. The story set in a tiny sewing factory in East Los Angeles in 2015, celebrates Latina power and Latina women’s bodies. The crowd-pleasing production stars four full-figured and one thin diet-pill abuser, actors in “Real Women Have Curves”. It’s a touching look into the lives of five undocumented Mexican garment workers in Los Angeles struggling to capture just a tiny piece the American Dream. Estela (Cristina Frias) is the owner of a sewing shop just trying to pay her bills and grow her business to a point where she can branch out from the darkness of fear from government officials deporting her, to a point where she can become a legal tax paying business with a future. Estela’s four employees: Carmen, the eldest and the group’s inspirational leader is played by the wonderful Blanca Araceli. Pancha, is introspectively and guardedly played by Ingrid Oliu. Rosali, the diet-pill abuser (her way of controlling her weight)
is fearlessly portrayed by Diana DeLaCruz, and the young high school graduate and budding writer Ana, who keeps a diary of her days working with the other ladies, is nicely played by Santana Dempsey. The talented cast is a case study in ensemble performance generosity. It’s been a blistering triple digit week in LA and Estela is slightly behind in her schedule to deliver 100 plus garments to her customer by morning. When a power failure hits the neighborhood not only does the temperature in the small factory immediately begin to rise, the tempers of the ladies rise accordingly. With no power no work can be completed. There will be strangers, electrical workers, and police in the area trying to get the power back on line. Fear of deportation and separation is a constant worry in the garment industry. For a good deal of the time the ladies fuss, wait and gossip. Gossip never goes out of style. Subject matter varies, but eventually the discussion of marriage and men rears its head. Maybe it’s the heat, but the ladies begin to open up concerning their male-dominated culture and its views about the role of Latina women in it. The subject of body types and size measurements surface. As way of laying out the elephant in the room for discussion, the women begin to disrobe down to bras, panties and girdles revealing their varying sizes and weight distributions. The audience (80% women) at first, gasp, then begin to applaud and then break into laughter and more applause. It’s a bold and empowering moment for the actors and a liberating moment for the audience. The entire scene takes no more than three or four minutes but its impact is enormous and cathartic. Prior to the curtain I spot stand-up comedian, actress, writer, and TV producer Cristela Alonzo giving an on-camera interview to a local Los Angeles TV station. We briefly discussed her 2014 ABC- TV show called “Cristela” which she created and starred in. Then she shared some of her feelings about the “Real… Women production “… our Latino community has been in the dark for so long, I want to thank Sheldon Epps for his support and his passion concerning diversity at the playhouse. We (Latinos) don’t need to go to New York City

to have success; we can do it right here in Southern California” adding, “Dreams come without an expiration date. My advice is be authentic. Have no regrets. I like being authentic.” When I ask what her next play is about, she breaks into a wide smile and with twinkling eyes says ‘Real Men Cook and Wash Dishes’; quickly adding she’s just joking.
always seems to come up with winning actors when she’s on the job. “ R e a l Wo m e n H a v e Curves” is a terrific production that everyone should see and enjoy performs at the Pasadena Playhouse, and runs through October 4, 2015.
