Gearing Up the Workforce Coachella Valley Expo Preparing to Connect Job Hunters, Employers INDIO – Job seekers are fine-tuning their resumes in anticipation of the biggest job fair in the Coachella Valley: The 18th Valley Wide Employment Expo. Hosted by the Riverside County Economic Development Agency / Workforce Development Center, Riverside County Department of Public Social Services and the State of California Employment Development Department, the event will bring hundreds of uniquely qualified candidates and employers face to

face — in one place, for one day — at Fullenwider Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18. “This is a great opportunity for job seekers to network with businesses and community partners from the Coachella Valley in the hopes of securing a good job, exploring educational alternatives or connecting with valuable resources,” said Riverside County Eastern Regional Manager Wendy Frederick. The Valley Wide Employment

Expo is not only potentially beneficial to those seeking employment, it’s also the perfect opportunity for employers to fill job vacancies while providing valuable exposure to their companies in support of the community. Employers within the Coachella Valley and beyond are encouraged to participate. Last year’s Employment Expo attracted more than 70 employers and an estimated 2,000 jobseekers. This year, employers in categories such as hospitality, government,

transportation, retail, security, unions, entertainment and sales are expected to attend. A number of community partners will be available to discuss educational opportunities and the variety of services they provide. “The county continues to provide resources and to respond to the needs of its business community and our job seekers,” said Frederick. “The Valley Wide Employment Expo is one way we are helping residents and the business community during these

challenging economic times.” Riverside County Workforce Development (rivcoworkforce. com) offers ongoing job services at its One-Stop Career Center located at 44-199 Monroe St., #B, in Indio, as well as other locations throughout the county. The Fullenwider Auditorium is located on the Riverside County Fairgrounds at 46-350 Arabia Street in Indio. Expo booth space is limited. For more information and an up-to-date list of participating employers, visit desertjobexpo.com or call 760863-2965 or 760-863-2510.

Indio Artist Frames a Striking Vision of Troubled Inland Sea By Dean Lamanna PALM SPRINGS – It’s an ecological enigma born partly by accident, an ancient lake which in its current form was created in 1905 when floods overran irrigation canals diverting water from the Colorado River. Today, the Salton Sea covers more than 500 square miles atop the southern San Andreas Fault in

Riverside and Imperial counties. And while its time as a popular recreation spot is long past, it still attracts the adventurous and the just plain curious. Scientists, documentarians and sundry creatives also are drawn by this shallow body of water’s extreme characteristics, including its agricultural runofffueled algae blooms, teeming bird populations, dilapidated shoreline

structures and rugged beauty. Artist Cristopher Cichocki, for one, has found enough inspiration in the Salton Sea to spend over a decade on the pieces that comprise his evocative multimedia exhibition “Desert Abyss: Cycle in Cycle,” now at the Palm Springs Art Museum through Sept. 22. “I collaborate with the desert Continues on Page 11

Cabot Yerxa, (1883-1965), historically referred to as the Father of Desert Hot Springs, homesteaded land on Miracle Hill from 1913 to 1918, and later wrote a long series of articles about his desert experiences that were published the Desert Sentinel newspaper. Cabot’s Museum Foundation has reprinted that series of articles in a book, “On the Desert Since 1913,” which is available at the museum trading post and on their website. Here’s another installment from the historical book. (Introduction by Richard Brown, Cabot’s Museum Foundation Board Member)

[Article 28: January 24, 1952] By Cabot Yerxa

This is the story of the discovery of hot mineral water, which has been the basis for the establishment and growth of Desert Hot Springs. This water has been found to be very beneficial for many of the human ills. Because of this healing water and salubrious climate, more and more people are coming to find health and happiness in D.H.S. There was no money for a pump of any kind on the newly completed well. We pulled the water up with a bucket fastened to a chain. Water was now freely used with great enjoyment and appreciation. A small garden was started, and I hauled up 65 buckets of water each day to keep the sandy soil damp. Lettuce, radishes, onions, etc., did fairly well, but desert animals ate everything, so the plan was abandoned, there being no money for fencing. When the five-month period rolled around in which the government allowed a homesteader to leave his claim, I returned to the oil fields to earn money with

Photo courtesy by John J. Hunt as he said, he could get water there such as it was.” The next day Cabot continued surveying the desert, his eyes took him to the north of the mud hole, following the rising desert floor as it reached which to come back to the desert and live another seven months. My duties were similar to those before. I took care of outlaw mules and horses, delivered freight, groceries and meat to railroad construction camps or new oil wells being drilled, with [my] spare time used keeping books or working in the main store and warehouse of the company. Two things are worthy of note in passing over this period. One noon I had a two-mule load of supplies at the door of an oil-well cook camp. It was in the shadow of an oil derrick where drillers were at work. My conversation with the cook was abruptly interrupted by a wild-eyed man in overalls who yelled in the open door, “Get the hell out of here, she is going to blow.” The man dashed away. The cook dropped a pan full of

for the Little San Bernardino Mountains. It was here, late in the afternoon, that he came upon a discovery that for him can be nothing but an omen. “That’s when I found broken bits of pottery on the slopes of

the big hill. From this I reasoned Indians had lived in the vicinity. Good enough for Indians, good enough for me, so I picked this hill for my claim.”

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN FOR THE DESERT SENTINEL dishes on the floor. I jumped in the wagon and lashed the frightened mules in a gallop. Just in time! Because with a deafening roar and crash, the drilling tools, weighing 2,000 pounds, flew high in the air, taking the top of the wooden derrick with them. Then followed tons of mud, rocks, water, black oil, and clouds of gas, covering everything near the well in a slimy mess. The roof of the cook house was caved in. After a half-hour the gush of material from the center of the earth subsided

into a rumble and occasional belches of oil and water. The other thing [worthy of note is:] to take the monotony out of life, [I broke] a team of large mules called Tom and Mandy. Tom was the worse of the two. Several men had tried to take care of them, failed, and quit. The boss said to me, “. . . you have to take care of those mules or quit.” So I started in to use all my animal experience to make friends of those two outlaws.

Redford Good ‘Company’ as Star, Director

By Theda Kleinhans Reichman

As “The Company You Keep, now on DVD, shows, your past can come back to haunt you. Such is the case for lawyer Jim Grant (Robert Redford), a single father raising his young daughter (Jackie Evancho) alone following the death of her mother in a car crash. He is a doting parent, a respected member of his community and a highly successful lawyer. Suddenly his well-ordered existence starts to unravel when Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf), an over-eager young reporter, confronts him in his office following the arrest of a 1970s-era radical (Susan Sarandon) who has been apprehended by the FBI. Ironically, she is captured on her way to willingly surrendering to authorities after 30 years in hiding. Shepard wants to know why Grant refused to be her lawyer. Grant tells him he referred her to another lawyer who could better handle her case since his plate was full with other clients. Suspicious and eager to get a

scoop, Shepard starts digging through old records of the era and discovers that Grant was the fugitive leader of a 1970s antiwar protest group. Eventually the reporter also discovers there is much more to Grant, who is forced to go on the run to protect himself from the FBI, than meets the eye. Robert Redford not only stars in the film, he also skillfully directs this taut political thriller. The allstar cast includes Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Stanly Tucci, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper and Brendan Gleeson. Europe Looking More and More Like US Recovery

By Kevin Powell It’s getting tougher and tougher to ignore the similarities between the US recovery from the Great Recession and what is occurring in Europe today. The flashpoint in the US was a financial crisis that put our entire financial system on the brink of collapse. Today, the EU (European Union) is dealing with many of those very same challenges. EU regulators have followed

US policies very closely by requiring banks to increase capital reserves and tighten loan standards. In 2008, US banks were unstable and underfunded. Today, our banking system is flush with cash and according to many experts, has never been stronger. The stocks of many US banks reflect this fact. In 2009, Bank of America stock had fallen all the way to $3 per share from its earlier high of more than $54. Today, Bank of America stock

sells for about $14 a share. JP Morgan fell to a low of $15 per share in 2009 from more than $50 a share. Wells Fargo was trading under $8 a share in March of 2009 from a previous high of more than $40 a share. Today, all these stocks are trading above their previous highs except for Bank of America. The recovery in their stock prices cannot be ignored. Citigroup had an even more amazing recovery falling from

similarities between our recovery and what seems to be afoot in Europe today, there’s no denying its possibility. England went so far as to encourage and reward banks for new loans. Unfortunately banks have been slow to increase their lending activity – the exact same thing that our banks did. Conversely, recent surveys show increasing demand and banks have stated that they will be more accommodating to an increasing appetite for borrowing. This is good news. Many overseas banks are paying large dividends such as Banco Santander’s (Spain) 8.6 percent and HSBC’s (England) 4.4 percent along with BNP Paribas’ (France) 3.66 percent and may be something you should discuss with your financial advisor. the market averages posted solid gains. But NASDAQ definitely needs to implement emergency plans and improve communication. When this happens again, smaller investors more than $50 a share all the way need to stop all trading until down to $0.97 cents a share in the systems are back up and March of 2009. Today it trades at operating in an orderly manner. more than $48 a share. There is no guarantee that Kevin Powell has been a EU banks will experience a financial advisor for the past 28 similar surge in stock prices, but years and can be reached at when you consider all the other kpplanner1@aol.com.

‘CinemAbility’

At the premiere on the Paramount lot, a glamorous quartet known as the “Push Girls”— stars of the so-named and acclaimed Sundance Channel reality show that puts a sensitive but sometimes humorous spin on in its subjects — wheeled down the red carpet. riveted attendees with their “If you can’t stand up, stand out!” attitude. They are among the highlights that make “CinemAbility” a documentary that is at once educational, inspiring and entertaining. IVC FILTER INVESTIGATION • IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) filters are implanted medical devices, usually by interventional radiologists or sometimes by vascular surgeons, in order to prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs and heart.

• A significant number of certain types of defective IVC filters can cause serious health risks or death with or without prior symptoms.

Thanks to intrepid producer and director Jenni Gold, the release of her documentary “CinemAbility” continues the progress. Gold, who has been living with Muscular Dystrophy for most of her life, devoted the last eight years to an exploration of disabilities in the film industry. “CinemAbility” features interviews with actors who have portrayed the disabled

— including Gary Sinise (amputee Lt. Dan in “Forrest Gump”) and Patty Duke (blind-and-deaf Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker”) — combined with clips dating to the silent film era. The documentary, which had its premiere this summer at Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood, delivers more than it promises. “It’s about the power of portrayal,” said Gold, who did a daunting amount of research. One key statistic, per the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation: 1 in 50 people living in the U.S. copes with some form of paralysis. This moving film also delves into the image of the disabled by way of flashbacks. It is especially illuminating for those

• The medical community and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have determined that leaving these filters in place for long periods of time may cause dangerous and potentially deadly complications and that these filters should be removed as soon as protection of blood clots is no longer needed. • The Inland Empire based medical product liability and consumer class action firm, McCuneWright, LLP, is investigating the dangers of the failure to remove these filters.

Gay Chorus Names New Artistic Director PALM SPRINGS – Douglas Wilson, an award-winning musician specializing in choral music and music education, has been named the new artistic director of the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus (PSGMC). Wilson is a PSGMC singer, vocal coach and section leader. His first objective in his new role will be to audition new and returning members with the aim to create a 100-voice auditioned male chorus comprised of gayand gay-supportive men from Greater Palm Springs. “I am honored to direct this dedicated group of singers, and work with their support team, as we kick off our 15th season,” said Wilson, who also directs the Children’s Choir and Hand Bell Choir at Hope Lutheran Church in Palm Desert. Before moving to Palm Springs, W ilson was an accompanist and associate

director of vocal groups and church choirs in Michigan and Nevada. He is a retired administrator of the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, where he was also organist and choir director for the Community Lutheran Church. Wilson received his Bachelor of Music from Michigan State University and his Master of Music, Organ Performance, from Arizona State University. He resides full time in Rancho Mirage with his husband. “We are thrilled that Doug has accepted the position,” said David Sanchez, PSGMC board chairman. “There are few individuals in our valley with his talent, skills set and track record. He will bring not only his depth of experience, but also his passion and professionalism.” The chorus will perform concerts in December and April as well as a cabaret event next August.

PA L M SPRINGS – September is Hunger Awareness Month in the Coachella Valley, and the City of Palm Springs is partnering with FIND Food Bank to help feed the hungry and spread awareness about the growing problem of food insecurity in our desert community. Now through the end of September, residents will be able to help feed those in need by dropping off canned food items in the lobby of Palm Springs City Hall, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, and the Palm Springs Public Library, 300 S. Sunrise Way. Also in partnership with the City of Palm Springs, FIND will bring its new mobile food pantry to the third annual Mayor’s

Healthy Planet, Healthy You Race and Wellness Festival on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Ruth Hardy Park. “We believe it is vital for all desert cities to join together in a committed coalition to make the Coachella Valley a hungerfree zone,” said FIND Food Bank CEO Lisa Houston, who added that even small donations to the food bank make a big difference to those in need. She pointed out that a $1 donation can equal seven meals while a $10 donation can equal 70 meals. “The City of Palm Springs is committed to helping FIND Food Bank in its mission to wipe out food insecurity and truly make our valley a Hunger Free Zone,” said Mayor Steve Pougnet. “I

SALTON SEE-WORTHY Continued from Page 1 landscape and what it offers me, and the Salton Sea has served as a major source material for much of my work,” said the Indio resident, who moved to the Coachella Valley from Wisconsin in 1989 at age 10 and has spent most of his adult life here. “Yes, there’s decay and abandonment surrounding the area; however, there’s a sublime beauty within all of its rough edges.” Cichocki (pronounced chähä-skee), a graduate of CalArts in Los Angeles, combines natural and manmade elements in his photos, videos and sculptures in a technique he calls “New Earth Art” — for example, applying construction marking paint to branches and the dried skeletal remains of dead tilapia fish to suggest humankind’s uneasy relationship with the environment. “There’s definitely a new life or existence given to the objects once they’re re-constructed or painted in bright neon pigment,” he said. “Mutations of nature and industry manifest as one within my work.” The toxic danger posed by the evaporating and increasingly saline great lake, beyond the notoriously

noxious fish die-offs represented vividly by several of Cichocki’s creations, is a theme the artist takes personally. “I’m attached to the Salton Sea as someone who cares about the future of Southern California,” he said. “Scientists project that it will become a dried up lake bed that will expose cancerous micro-debris in the next 20 years if neglected… there’s an airborne catastrophe on the horizon. This potential poor air quality will make Southern California uninhabitable if no action is taken. “The Salton Sea can be saved and flourish once again, yet it’s in a governmental gridlock right now where no one wants to commit to actually funding a sustainable game plan. We need to re-evaluate our priorities and put the Sea at the top of the list. If this reality continues to go unacknowledged any longer, it may be too late.” Along with Cichocki’s environmental concern and desert passion comes an abiding respect for the natural forces that continue to shape the Coachella Valley. “This region is aligned next to the San Andreas fault,” the artist noted. “It’s intense when you

“Desert Abyss: Cycle in Cycle” runs through Sept. 22 at the Palm Springs Art Musuem. (Courtesy of Cristopher Cichocki) think of the potential magnitude of seismic activity that could take place. The boiling geothermal hot springs are a little reminder that the earth is a breathing force capable of abrupt transformation at any given time.” The blacklit neon pieces, abstractly projected video clips and accompanying aural effects of

“Desert Abyss: Cycle in Cycle” may be capable of transforming one’s own perception. “Nature inverses upon itself in various forms,” Cichocki said. “There’s something unresolved or to be continued within the work.” For more on the exhibition, visit cristophersea.com. many liquidity options to avoid penalties; features to protect clients in the event of long-term care, disability or critical illness; guaranteed return on investment using income options; and enhanced death benefits. The term of an annuity can range from five to 20 years. Your advisor should review your situation carefully and recommend the

best solutions available to you. Financial Advisors must look at all the factors of their clients’ needs and healthcare concerns when making recommendations. Financial experts may arrive at negative outcomes by simply analyzing the data on annuities, but a huge factor not addressed by the Wharton article is the comfort and security for those

of us who do not want to spend our golden years at the computer keeping up with the market and who no longer wish to risk our money. For more information, call Gough Insurance & Financial Services at 760-251-7724 or visit goughinsurance.com for a free copy of the booklet “Growth without Risk.”

Experts Offer Opposing Views on Annuities By Janice Gough

Not a day goes by without reading completely opposite opinions from one expert to another: one tells us to buy, while another advises to sell. An example of this is a recent article by an expert from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School who analyzed the true value of annuities and came to a negative conclusion. After stating the known benefits — that annuities provide higher income than bonds and protect against the risk of outliving one’s wealth — the analyst condemned these financial products for the early surrender charges incurred if the funds are

accessed prematurely due to a sudden disability or unexpected healthcare costs. In my opposing opinion, there will always be unknown factors involved in any product in which we invest. However, the time factor with annuities can be both a good thing due to the compounding of interest on a tax-deferred basis, and not so good if you have a financial emergency. When an emergency occurs, financial advisors help their clients find liquidity in all their assets. We then advise our client to draw upon those assets that are least costly to access. Moreover, additional riders can be purchased to cover these risks. Annuities today offer

12 Super Foods and Other Blues Busters

By Art Kunkin

In this column I am continuing my weekly reportage on ancient and modern methods for giving readers of this newspaper hundreds of extra years of happy life. This week I want to briefly report first on 12 Super Foods that can increase your happiness and, secondly, two new bluesbusting series of events starting this week and next in Yucca Valley that I invite you to attend with me. Mild depressions may be a signal that you are not eating rights. Even gentle mood changes can be linked to bad eating haits. Shortages of B vitamins, iron, selenium, magnesium and vitamin C will all bring on the blues. As you get older, you don’t

always absorb some of these nutrients as well as you used to. Aches, pains, illnesses and changes in your life can also make you an easy target for the blues. Feeling depressed may be more common when you’re older but it’s still not normal. If you feel sad, worried, tired or irritable for more than two week, get help from your doctor, friends and/ or family. So here are specific foods to enjoy. Feel good from the B vitamin folate in pinto beans, the most popular dried bean in the United States. A cup of pinto beans has almost 75 percent of the amount you need each day. They also contain the rain boosters magnesium and thiamin. Tasty tips of asparagus also contain considerable folate that

helps your body make serotonin, the brain neurotransmitter that produces feelings of calmness and contentment. Snack on sardines for a clear mind. These little fish are loaded with vitamin B12. You can suffer memory loss, depression and other mood disorders when you don’t have enough B12. Just 3 or 4 ounces of sardines will more thhan satisfy your daily vitamin requirements. You will also get protein, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium and vitamin C. But watch out if you are counting calories and cholesterol. Sardines are rich in those too. Boost your brain with a baked potato that is rich in vitamin B6, thiamin, iron, folate, niacin and potassium. Live happy with liver. Grill salmon to balance your brain with omega-3 fatty acids. See a brighter future with sugar beets. The uridine that beets

contain produces the same antidepressant effects as depression drugs like Prozac. Eat clams and be happy. They are full of iron, A sour mood is one of the major symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia and more than 2 billion people are said to have this condition. Keep your vitamin C level up by eating plenty of red or green peppers. Your brain needs this vitamin to produce serotonin, a chemical that helps you feel good and helps you sleep well. Choose cottage cheese for an upbeat attitude. Cottage cheese is one of your best non-meat sources of protein. Cajun rice contains complex carbohydrates and raises the tryptophan in your body, the amino acid your body uses to make seroronin. Tryptophan is also found in turkey meat. I am there myself every week because Lou is a wonderful person to hang out with. Then, finally, there is Penelope Sitter’s beginning 12week “Know Yourself” astrology class starting Wednesday, September 11, 2013. 2pm to 4pm, at Valerie EagleHeart’s Rainbow Stew, 55509 Twentynine Palms Highway, Yucca Valley. Call Penny at 760401-4162 for information. There is a sliding scale tuition. In this class you will get some important clues about the factors in your birth chart that limit your behavior and learn how you can achieve freedom from those limits. FAMILY FEATURES

bundant plates of fresh vegetables, delicate fish from the nearby sea and splashes of olive oil are all hallmarks of traditional meals found in the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean diet has been embraced for thousands of years by those living along the Mediterranean Sea, and is now followed around the world as consumers discover its delicious flavor components and researchers uncover its countless health benefits, including helping to prevent heart attacks and strokes according to a study conducted by The New England Journal of Medicine. It’s easy to embrace this healthy lifestyle during grilling season by giving your grill a Mediterranean diet makeover with the Pompeian family of oils and vinegars. You can enjoy the benefits of the diet without leaving home by making simple changes, such as swapping butter and vegetable oil for Grapeseed Oil or OlivExtra Premium Mediterranean Blend, and making homemade dressings and vinaigrettes by combining oils and vinegars in place of bottled versions. Grapeseed Oil, which has one of the highest smoke points of all oils and is a rich source of Vitamin E, has a light taste that will not disrupt the flavors of food while cooking. This versatile, all natural oil is great to line your grill or pan with before cooking to prevent food from sticking. OlivExtra Mediterranean Blend, a healthy combination of canola, extra virgin and grapeseed oils, is the perfect all-purpose oil that represents key components of the Mediterranean diet and provides essential Omega-3 and Omega-6, monounsaturated fat and Vitamin E. Improving Kids’ Health for the School Year • Include a surprise: Kids love surprises, such as favorite photos, stickers or a reminder about an upcoming event. A lunch box surprise can make your child’s day extra special. But nutrition is only half the equation. As screen time competes for kids’ attention, active time is decreasing. And exercise is crucial to preventing obesity, improving motor skills and providing a social outlet. Unfortunately, not all kids are receptive. “One of the biggest challenges is getting shy kids to participate,â€? says Jyl Camhi, co-founder of Great Play (greatplay.com), a children’s gym franchise that uses interactive technology and a progressive curriculum based on motor-skill development. Camhi offered these suggestions to coax a child forward in a group fitness scenario: • Never force participation:

Childhood obesity rates have skyrocketed over the past 30 years. Presently, one-third of American kids are overweight or obese. Since most kids consume half their daily calories at school, healthy eating habits must be addressed both at home and in the classroom. “Unfortunately, healthy eating for kids isn’t always stressed consistently, said Debbie

Blacher, founder of Wholesome Tummies (wholesometummies. com), a children’s food franchise devoted to bringing nutritious meals to schools. “Many kids lack access to nutritious food and good information about healthful eating and behaviors.â€? Blacher, a mom herself and an expert on crafting healthful school lunches, offered these lunch- packing ideas for parents: • Make a bento box: Instead

of packing the traditional entrÊe and sides, make lunch out of small snacks in a multicompartment box. Hardboiled eggs, raisins, an apple or other fresh fruit, crackers, tuna fish, pasta salad, veggies, dips and more. • Travel the world: Go with an international theme each day, such as Mexican, Asian or Italian. Include an educational note about the meal’s origin.

The first time in a new environment can be emotionally draining. Be a source of comfort for your child while he or she sits on the sidelines. Stay for an entire class and return the next time. • Look for peer leaders: Outgoing children are often thrilled to help another child feel more comfortable. • Sometimes leaving helps: Oftentimes kids behave better when they don’t have a parental crutch to lean on. • Pay attention to leaders’ personalities: Whether it’s in classes, sports or school, the leader can make or break the experience. Does the coach make kids comfortable? Look for telltale signs and find a coach that works well with your child. There are some trends not worth following — and an unhealthy lifestyle is one of them. With the right tools and tricks, you influence your children’s health positively.

Since 1994, the sterilization surgery has required the signature of a medical official from the state capital for each and every instance. According to documents obtained by journalists, however, no such records exist. Dr. Ricki Barnett, the

physician who tracks medical services and costs for the California Prison Health Care Receivership Corp, told the Center that the health care committee responsible for authorizing those surgeries have not seen a single request. The papers obtained by the investigators suggest something much to the contrary, though, with records indicating that physicians contracted by the state earned $147,460 in local funds to perform those surgeries between 1997 and 2010.

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a historic ruling on Wednesday, Jun. 26 to grant same sex marriages across the nation. In their ruling on DOMA and California’s Proposition 8, the justices overturned a previous lower court ruling which declared same sex marriage unconstitutional. Within minutes of the landmark ruling, local hoteliers and wedding planners scrambled to promote Palm Springs as a premiere wedding destination. “The Supreme Court’s

historic action today overturning DOMA and dismissing the appeal of California’s Proposition 8, clearing the way for same-sex marriage in our state is a huge victory for the LGBT community. This is about equal rights and I am gratified that the court has recognized that we are all the same,” said Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet. “My husband Christopher and I look forward to same-sex weddings commencing again in the state of California – and rest assured the City of Palm Springs will continue to be a destination committed to celebrating the

institution of marriage, both heterosexual and same-sex,” Pougnet said in a prepared statement “Riverside County is prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and record their marriages immediately after the anticipated direction is received from the state and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Hopefully that day will be here soon,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on the matter of Hollingsworth v. Perry, making

Local Men Charged in Vanderbilt Rape Case By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT - The attorney for one of the men charged with allegedly tampering with evidence in a Vanderbilt rape case said his client, Joseph Dominick Quinzio, 20, of Palm Desert, received a video of the alleged rape through his phone as a text message. Criminal Defense Attorney Brett Greenfield with the Los Angeles law firm of Kenner and Greenfield admitted that his client, Quinzio, “saw the video

and became very disturbed.” Quinzio, along with Miles Finley, 19, of Bermuda Dunes are friends of Brandon Vandenburg, 20, of Indio. The three young men played football together at Xavier College Preparatory High School in Palm Desert. Vandenburg was arrested for five counts of rape and two counts of sexual battery against an unconscious 21-year-old female Vanderbilt student. Vandenburg is also charged with videotaping the female victim

and passing on those videos to others. The alleged rape and video tapping took place on June 23 in Tennessee. Greenfield said the video was sent to his client. Quinzio and Finley both are charged with tampering with electronic evidence and scheduled to appear in separate courtrooms on Tuesday, Aug. 20 for extradition hearings. “He’s (Quinzio) being accused of somehow tampering with or destroying evidence, and

German son seeks reunion with father By Jackie Devereaux Emin Bernd Alihodic was born on July 21, 1951 in Siegen, Germany and immigrated to the United States sometime in the late 1980s. Alihodic left behind two children and an ex-wife. His son, Jens (Alihodic) Luschnt, 35, came to Palm Springs on Monday, Aug. 12 to search for his biological father with only a

newspaper article describing how his dad was rescued twice off Mount San Jacinto on Feb. 9, 2009 and then again on May 13, 2010. Jens, who speaks little or no English, was adopted by his stepfather at the age of 10 and only knows a little about his biological father from stories his mother told him through the years. “I’d like to know more

about him. How’s he been living all these years,” the younger Alihodic said through a German/ English interpreter. Jens said he started looking for his father about a year and a half ago after meeting the love of his life, Karin Huebers. He and Karin want to start their own family soon and through her urging, they traveled to Palm Springs to search for his biological father. Continues on Page 4

nothing could be further than the truth,” Greenfield said. Nashville, Tennessee Metro police traveled to California in July to interview both Quinzio and Finley about their involvement with the cover up. Greenfield said his client was so disturbed by the video, that he went to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department on Friday, Aug. 16 and reported everything he knew. “Doing the right thing was what prompted him to go to the sheriff,” Greenfield said, knowing an investigation was going on. Greenfield said only when

Quinzio showed up to talk to investigators did he find out that there was a warrant for his arrest in Tennessee. “He (Quinzio) was simply sent a text message, unwanted, unsolicited, out of the blue, put in a terrible situation by someone who he thought was a friend,” Greenfield said. Quinzio is being held without bail at the Southwest Detention Center. Finley is being held at the Larson Justice Center in Indio without bail and is also expected to appear in court Tuesday.
