“Fun, Fun, Fun.” Brian Wilson and The Zombies bring classics to Fantasy Springs Resort By Robert Kinsler Less than a week after catching The Rolling Stones thrill a packed State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, I was able to catch a decidedly more intimate bill celebrating ‘60s-spawned rock courtesy of a promising bill featuring Brian Wilson and The Zombies at the Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio on Sept. 1. Fresh off the band’s

induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, England’s Zombies have continued to enjoy a welldeserved resurgence because of a number of fortuitous factors including burgeoning interest in the band’s 1968 masterwork “Odessey and Oracle” and a slew of high-profile performances showcasing the fully-intact talents of singer Colin

Blunstone and keyboardistcomposer Rod Argent. In fact, prior to catching The Zombies in Indio on Sunday night, this writer last caught the band earn a standing ovation opening for Arcade Fire at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles in September 2018. The crowd at Fantasy Springs was rewarded with a special set that covered the band’s stellar range

of intoxicating material during their set. Opening with the blues rock nugget “Roadrunner” (the Bo Diddley cover was the first song off the band’s 1965 debut “Begin Here”), the Zombies covered plenty of territory over 65 minutes. With a style that seamlessly blends rock, pop, jazz, classical and R&B, the Zombies (also featuring drummer Steve

Feds Propose Rolling Back Climate Change Protections By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Oil and gas companies will no

longer have to put in pollution controls that help in the fight against climate change – if a

revised rule announced by the feds on Thursday is finalized. The Environmental

Protection Agency is revising the Obama-era Methane Waste Rule, which required companies to capture excess methane rather than burn it or let it escape into the air. Mitch Jones, climate and energy program director with Food and Water Watch, says methane is a destructive greenhouse gas. “Over a 20-year period, methane traps 86 times more heat in our atmosphere than carbon dioxide does,” says Jones. “Those emissions are really forcing short-term rapid heating and making climate change much worse.” EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler, himself a former energy lobbyist, defended the change, saying it lifts an unnecessary burden on the oil and gas industry. A 60-day public comment period on

regulations.gov will commence once the rule is published in the Federal Register. Jones says some oil and gas companies actually didn’t want the rule rolled back, because it allowed them to claim that their operations are climate-conscious. “They’re actually using the existing rule to greenwash a climatedestroying product, which is fracked gas,” says Jones. California has a large oil-and-gas industry that is spread across 10 counties but is most active in the central valley. Studies have linked methane pollution to increased incidence of low-birthweight babies and respiratory disease in communities upwind of fossil-fuel facilities.

7 Ideas to Improve Curb Appeal

By Desert Star Staff Whether you’re hoping to sell in the near future or simply looking to touch up outdated areas, there’s one aspect of home maintenance most homeowners agree is important: curb appeal. It’s a broad term that may reference any number of visible features, meaning there are plenty of ways to enhance the appearance of your house. Consider these ideas – some big, some small – for bringing new life to your home’s look from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. things a guest, passerby or potential homebuyer may notice, the front door is the gateway to your home and a likely opening impression. Upgrading to a heavier, bolder door or simply repainting the existing threshold can capture positive attention. Alternately, swapping out hardware for a more eyecatching look is an easy way to achieve a fresh facelift.

Create Seating Areas A welcoming home is typically an attractive one, and there are few better ways to create a cozy vibe than a seating or gathering area on the porch. Whether it’s the classic porch swing or chairs and a coffee table suitable for the outdoors, a small zone ideal for conversation and camaraderie can help create an at-home appearance. Plant Shrubbery Billowing trees and blooming flowers are certainly eye-catching accessories outside a home, but many varieties require intense care to grow the way you envision and may adhere to seasonal weather patterns for optimal appearance. For a quicker result, shop around for fully mature shrubs and plants that can withstand elements throughout the year.

Rethink the Mailbox It may not be as exciting of a project to undertake, however, giving your mailbox a fresh look helps it stand out and – especially if it’s directly in front of your home – may turn an ordinary object into a worthy attractant. Your work may be as simple as updating to a newer model or as thought-out as constructing a small rock wall around the base. Add Stonework For a project that can give your house a new look altogether, consider incorporating stonework or a stone veneer for a natural appearance. If changing your facade isn’t in the plans,

less complicated ideas like pavers, brick sidewalks and landscape rings are ways to introduce a classic touch. Paint (or Repaint) the Exterior Changing the exterior paint color of a home is one of the most popular renovation projects, and one of the first that comes to mind for many homeowners. Simply altering the colors of trim, gutters and other accent pieces may be enough for some homes, and repainting the exterior doesn’t have to mean a new color altogether – consider a brighter shade or simply a fresh coat to help your home pop.

Update Lighting Light fixtures come in all shapes and sizes, and many times the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While updated porch illumination may not drive home a potential sale, it’s a subtle touch right as guests arrive. Adding smaller lights in previously unlit areas like around landscaping (consider solar-powered for easier maintenance) can help your hard work shine. What and Where is “Exclusive Use Common Area”? [Part 1 of a series]

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. The typical condominium project consists of three categories of property – the “separate interest” (normally called the “unit”), the common area, and a subset of common area called “exclusive use common area.” Misunderstandings regarding exclusive use area lead to many disputes. Simply put, exclusive use areas are not “your” property, but a part of the commonly owned property set aside for one member’s use. A better understanding of exclusive use area, what it is, who controls it, and who takes care of it can help prevent disputes in condominium associations. The unit is normally described in the “notes” portion of the condominium plan, a recorded (but often overlooked) document. There are many portions of a normal condominium project which are outside of the unit boundaries but intended for the use and enjoyment of a single unit owner. These parts are called “exclusive use common area”. The description of some exclusive use common areas might be found in

the Condominium Plan or CC&Rs. Civil Code Section 4145 provides the default definition if the governing documents do not fully cover the topic, including: “shutters, awnings, window boxes, doorsteps, stoops, porches, balconies, patios, exterior doors, doorframes, and hardware incident thereto, screens and windows or other fixtures designed to serve a single separate interest, but located outside the boundaries of the separate interest…”. Fixtures serving a single unit but existing outside of the unit boundaries may include water heaters or air conditioning equipment, for example. Many condominiums are bought with the mistaken belief that the exclusive use area, such as, for example, a balcony, is “theirs” and the HOA cannot dictate how it is used. However, the balcony is still common area, and the association can limit how the homeowner uses it. Associations often have rules regarding use of particular exclusive use areas such as balconies or patios. Many non-compliant members may not understand that their use of exclusive use common area is not unlimited. Who maintains exclusive use common area? Who September 4, 2019

repairs it? Is the broken window or leaky water heater an association concern? The inquiry usually starts by reviewing the governing documents regarding the area in question to determine if it is exclusive use common area, followed by analyzing who maintains it and who repairs it -- and the two responsibilities might not be placed on the same party. If governing documents do not answer the question, the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act fills in the blanks. Under Civil Code 4775, the association repairs, replaces and maintains common area and repairs and replaces exclusive use common area, and the member maintains exclusive use common area, unless the CC&Rs state otherwise. Note that since 2017, only association CC&Rs can allocate repair and maintenance responsibility differently than Civil Code 4775. Therefore, many association rules presently

in place may be invalid to the extent they purport to allocate such responsibility. Exclusive use areas are often misunderstood as the unit owner’s property, but such areas are still part of the common area and therefore jointly owned with all other owners and subject to association control. “Use” is different than “control”, and maintenance responsibility may be allocated differently than repair responsibility. Exclusive use is a necessary complication of shared ownership, but better understanding will reduce conflict. Kelly G. Doctors Urged to Report Cases of Possible Vaping illness

A mysterious lung ailment linked to e-cigarette use has led to at least one death and more than 100 hospitalizations across the country. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Health is asking healthcare providers across the

state to report any cases of respiratory illness they suspect to be associated with vaping. According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease

By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. — The cost of insulin is skyrocketing, and health-care advocates want Kentucky lawmakers to take action to stop it. According to the American Diabetes Association, the list price of insulin has jumped by 64% since 2014. In August, Louisville resident Angie Summers told the state’s Interim Joint Committee on Banking and Insurance that she’s had to selfration the insulin needed for her Type 2 diabetes, or go without. “A lot of times for me, that made it easier for me to put it on the back burner - you know, that made it easier for me to say, ‘Well, I have to make rent, so insulin’s going to have to wait,’” Summers said. More than a half-million Kentuckians live with diabetes - just over 15% of the state’s

adult population. Earlier this year, state Attorney General Andy Beshear filed lawsuits against the world’s three largest insulin manufacturers over rising drug prices. House Bill 502, introduced in the last legislative session by Republican Rep. Danny Bentley of Russell, would require drug manufacturers to be more transparent about insulin pricing. Summers said she thinks that’s a good start. “I think the first step is we have to demand transparency,” she said. “I think the second step is that we have to agree that there has to be a cap on those co-pays.” In May, Colorado became the first state in the country to set a $100 cap on insurance co-pay amounts for insulin. Summers said if she were to take the insulin she needs, even with

By Desert Star Staff Enrollment in Medicare Part D is on the rise. Having increased 12 percent since 2017, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the popularity of this prescription drug benefit may be due to the decline in the cost of basic premiums, projected to drop for the third year in a row. Part D plans help people save on the costs of prescriptions and knowing these three Ds will help you maximize those savings in 2020. 1. Drug Coverage: While Part D plans are approved by CMS, they’re offered through private companies.

So, as with any other type of insurance purchase, plans will vary in coverage and cost, allowing you to choose one that best fits your needs. It’s important to know that plans change year-toyear, so one that covered your prescriptions in 2019, may not necessarily in 2020. Making sure the medications you take are covered by the plan you choose at a price you can afford will avoid costly surprises in 2020. This includes checking not only if medications are covered, but how. Each plan places covered drugs into tiers that are assigned a different copay; that’s the

Control and Prevention, nearly 200 people across 22 states have been hospitalized after using electronic cigarettes. State Epidemiologist Dr.

Tim Jones with the Tennessee Department of Health said patients are showing signs of serious lung problems. “And it’s essentially severe lung disease - shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing - something that we might see with really bad asthma or pneumonia,” Jones said. He said most of the patients are adolescents and young adults. Last week, the Knox County Health Department reported a resident there was hospitalized with symptoms thought to be linked to e-cigarette use. At least one individual in Illinois has died of severe respiratory illness linked to vaping. According to the CDC, many patients reported a gradual start to their breathing issues before being hospitalized. In some cases, they’ve reported vomiting, diarrhea and fatigue. Jones said the type of electronic

cigarette product used doesn’t seem to be a factor. “It doesn’t appear to be associated with a particular brand or a particular maker,” he said. Jones added medical experts are in the dark as to what’s causing the illness, which began cropping up in hospital rooms in late June. “Right now, we’re seeing such a sudden increase that, clearly, there’s something new going on,” Jones said. “It hasn’t yet been specifically identified, but as soon as we know, we’ll let people know. But clearly something is different, and has been different in the last couple of months.” Even though cases in different states appear to be similar, the CDC has said it’s still unclear whether they have a common cause or are entirely different ailments.

As Prices Rise, More Diabetics Unable to Afford Insulin

Every year, an estimated 27,000 Kentuckians are diagnosed with diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. (Adobe Stock) insurance, it would cost her about $800 per month. “I didn’t want to say anything to anybody, because I was ashamed that I had Type 2 diabetes to begin with,”

Summers said. “And then, there was the shame of not being able to afford medication.” But she isn’t alone. An American Diabetes Association survey found many people who

face high out-of-pocket costs for insulin are forced to either ration or forgo their medication in order to reduce costs.

out-of-pocket cost you pay when you fill a prescription. Check the tier in which your medication is covered. 2. Deductible: Don’t rule out plans on deductibles alone. That’s just one factor to consider. For example, a $0 deductible deal may sound good until you realize your medication is not covered. When comparing plans, consider what experts call the “overall cost,” which includes the premium you pay monthly, the deductible you’ll need to pay before your plan starts covering medication, and the copay. To estimate “overall cost,” make a list of your medications. Then, check how each is covered

by the plans available to you. 3. Due Diligence: If you’re enrolled in a Part D plan, you’ll receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). All plans are required to mail the ANOC by September 30 and also post it to their website by October 15. That notice will inform you of the changes your plan will make starting January of 2020. Review this carefully. If you’re looking to add a Part D plan in 2020, start by making a list of the medications you take. On October 1 of every year, companies share information about what medications they’re covering in next year’s plans. You can then compare how the

medications you need will be covered and estimate the “overall cost” based on the plans offered in your area. Want an easy-to-use guide to help you choose the plan that’s best for you? A free checklist to compare plans is available at roadmapformedicare.com, as well as step-by-step instructions to help you prepare for Medicare open enrollment, which runs from Oct. 15 – Dec. 7. Empowering yourself now with the information you’ll need during open enrollment will ensure you choose the plan that can best help your health and wallet in 2020. StatePoint

5 Cool Ideas for Self-Improvement Month

By Desert Star Staff There’s no good reason to wait until the new year to focus on selfimprovement. There’s also no excuse. September is Self-Improvement Month, and a fine time to learn a new skill, take up an old hobby or set a goal. Here are five cool ideas to try out over the course of the month: • Start coding: Whether you want to switch careers and become a software or web developer or simply take up a new hobby, learning to code can open up a world of possibilities, while keeping your mind active and vital. And these days, free online tutorials available in dozens of programming languages, can help you get started without any tools required but time and dedication. • Learn to play piano:

Learning a musical instrument can improve focus, enhance memory and reduce stress. For a fast-track to playing songs skillfully, check out the Casio CT-X700, which features a Step-Up Lesson system to easily learn songs from the keyboard’s built-in library. The display shows proper fingering and notation, and a six-track recorder allows you to quickly capture your inspiration. • Set a reading goal: You don’t have to be a student to complete a reading challenge. Whether it’s to read 5 nonfiction books over the course of the month or get through that classic tome that’s been sitting on your bookshelf for years, give yourself a reading goal to achieve this month. • Get outdoors: Spending time exercising in nature has powerful physical and mental health benefits. Give yourself

the motivation needed to get outdoors with a wearable device, such as the WSD-F30 Pro Trek Smart Outdoor Watch, which includes a built-in compass, altimeter and barometer, as well as a slew of fitness and nature apps designed to promote

wellness and help you better appreciate your surroundings. • Start saving: If you don’t have a savings account, think about opening one during the month of September. Make it painless by having the fund draw automated monthly payments from your checking

account. Then sit back and watch your savings grow. Long before writing up resolutions, celebrate Self-Improvement Month, a perfect mid-year motivation for change and growth. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff Northern Europeans have traditionally looked down on their American cousins for relying on home air conditioning. However, with temperatures rising, they’re starting to feel the heat, and beginning to embrace the American way. From the muggy swamp of Washington DC to the arid heat of Texas, America is the land of air conditioning. AC units hum away outside 90 percent of homes, restaurants, and offices across the land, and few Americans have to subject themselves to the elements for longer than a few minutes at a time. From the air-conditioned home to the air-conditioned car, to the air-conditioned office, and then on to the air-conditioned bar for happy hour, life is a series of short walks between cocoons of icy comfort. Things are a little different in Europe. While air conditioners are common in the warmer south - the Greeks, for example, depend on them - the Vikingblooded northern Europeans would instead put up with the heat. Some of this, of course,

has to do with the region’s colder climate, but even on hot days, Germans, Brits, and Dutch will choose to shutter their windows and strip off their clothes before investing in AC, while the French will sooner dip their toes into a public fountain. In true Protestant style, they argue that air conditioning is decadent and wasteful. In 1992, Cambridge University Professor Gwyn Prins called the US’ reliance on chilled air the country’s “most pervasive and least-noticed epidemic,” while German news magazine Focus suggested earlier this year that people cool themselves off using “a fan, a towel, and a bowl of water “instead. Indeed, it seems the Germans would instead commute naked than giving in to the degeneracy of artificial cooling. However, rising summer temperatures look set to test Tommy’s stiff upper lip and Fritz’s Teutonic stoicism. This summer saw historic high temperatures scorch the entire continent. Record highs were set in

Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Britain, and several Scandinavian countries. At least 13 people died, and July went down as the hottest month ever recorded by the EU Earth Observation Network. The Germans begged for relief. Sales of AC units – which had already jumped 15 percent in 2018 – spiked. AC installers had their phone lines flooded with calls, and German electronics retailers Saturn and MediaMarkt scrambled to fill orders. “We are advising customers if they want to buy a fan, to be very quick because we expect more heat,” warned a spokeswoman for the outlets. France and Austria saw a similar rise in demand, with French cities even erecting airconditioned ‘cooling rooms’ in cities to give sweaty locals access to the reprieve of air conditioning. That’s a bold move from the French, who only artificially chill shopping malls and larger offices, despite their country usually getting a hotter summer than most of its neighbors to the east. Perhaps they fear that by

making the workplace livable in summer they might have to do away with their sacred two-hour lunch breaks. In the UK, the US-based National Sleep Foundation went as far as warning people against sleeping in their cars with the AC on. All across Europe, the parched public did what they could to beat the heat. Foreign media looked on with a mixture of amusement and concern. “What makes Europe’s heatwave so insufferable?” asked CNN: “No AC.”” Without the airconditioner, it is hell,” wrote the Irish Times, its writers basking in the natural air conditioning offered by Ireland’s frigid climate. In Western Europe, opposition to air conditioning isn’t all about physical resilience. There’s also bucketloads of green guilt. AC units are seen as power hogs (though the typical modern unit only adds around 100 euros to a household’s annual electricity bill) and, as demand rises, governments fret over the environmental damage caused by the refrigerant gases

they use. While units are flung up across Asia with feckless abandon, arcane EU regulations mandate that systems in Europe are filled only with the least harmful refrigerants, and regularly inspected for leaks. Germany’s Green Party –which enjoyed a modest bump in regional elections over the weekend– has ignored air conditioning as a method of cooling off. Instead, the party called over the summer for the construction of more green spaces, claiming that “trees, parks, green open spaces, and paths” provide natural “cooling air-conditioning systems” for towns and cities. All of this is fine to debate with cool heads in cold weather, but when the thermometer hits 42.6 degrees celsius (108.7 Fahrenheit) in Saxony, Germans will likely crucify any politician suggesting they sit under a tree. For all their cultural resistance to comfort and ecological hand-wringing, all it looks set to take is another sweltering summer for the Europeans to learn to stop worrying and love the chill.

Why Europe doesn’t cool itself off with air conditioning

34 feared dead in horrific boat fire off California coast

By Desert Star Staff Dozens of people are feared dead after the 75foot scuba diving boat ‘Conception’ caught fire just before 3:30am and sank near Santa Cruz Island off the coast of California, leaving the sleeping passengers little chance to flee. Five crew members were awake on the top deck of the vessel when the fire broke out, and one was able to make a mayday call before the fire forced them to abandon ship. In a transcript of the call obtained by CNN, the dispatcher can be heard asking “You don’t have any firefighter gear at all? No fire extinguishers or nothing?” and “There’s no escape hatch for any of the people on board?” while the crew member’s responses are largely inaudible, except for an “I can’t breathe.” The crew members were rescued by a good Samaritan crew in a pleasure craft called ‘Grape Escape.’ A total of 25 bodies have been

recovered so far, with nine people still missing, according to media reports. At least 38 people were on board, the US Coast Guard said. Crew members told their rescuers that the passengers trapped on the burning vessel included one of their girlfriends and three birthday parties, including one of a 17-year-old. “This is probably the worst-case scenario you could possibly have,” Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters during a press conference, explaining that the ship’s location and the time contributed to the tragedy, with most passengers asleep until it was too late. “Fire is the scourge of any ship.” Crews from the Coast Guard, Santa Barbara Fire Department, Ventura County Fire Department and Vessel Assist responded to the incident. The fire department crews were fighting the blaze when the vessel sank 20 yards off shore in 64 feet of water. In a press conference on Monday morning a

Coast Guard spokesperson said its full efforts were still in a “response posture,” searching for survivors. The searches are being carried out in the water and on land in case any survivors managed to reach the shore. By Monday evening, however, hopes that the missing passengers were still alive had begun to wane. “We will search all the way through the night, into the

morning,” promised Coast Guard Cpt. Monica Rochester during a press conference, “but I think we should all be prepared to move into the worst outcome.” The rescue effort has been complicated by the position of the boat, which is upside down in relatively shallow water with receding tides. “At some point, they’re going to have to make a determination when the best time is to…

either re-float that vessel and attempt to recover anyone inside or try to make the recovery while it’s still on the ocean floor,” explained Brown. The FBI is assisting with the investigation into the fire, according to CBS, though no criminal activity has been suggested, authorities say. The National Transportation Safety Board has also reportedly sent a team to investigate.

NBC PS News Staff The US Coast Guard on Tuesday suspended the search for victims of a deadly Labor Day boat fire off the California coast, officials said. Twenty bodies have so far been recovered. They have been identified as 11 women and nine men; Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters. Of 33 passengers and six crew who were on board the 75-foot dive boat Conception, only five people have so far been found alive. The five survivors are all crew members. United States Coast Guard Capt. Monica Rochester said the search was suspended because no other people were seen entering the water. An aircraft that flew over the scene didn’t see any additional signs of debris or distress. “It is never an easy decision to suspend search efforts,” she said. “We know that this is a very difficult time for families and friends of the victims.” Thirty-three people had signed up to spend what promised to be a glorious Labor Day weekend of scuba diver’s dream: unlimited diving among colorful underwater sea life, with gourmet meals served between dives. But on the last part of the three-day trip, the ship caught fire off Santa Cruz Island. “This is probably the worst-case scenario you can possibly have,” Brown said. “You have a vessel that’s on the open sea, that is in the middle of the night. I mean,

it’s 3:30 in the morning.” Victims were likely asleep Questions abound over why the boat caught fire, and whether lives could have been saved. A mayday call reveals the tension between a Coast Guard dispatcher and the Conception’s captain. But only the dispatcher’s words could be heard. The captain apparently reports a fire and provides a location. The dispatcher is heard saying, “And there’s 33 people on board the vessel that’s on fire, they can’t get off? … Roger, are they locked inside the boat? … Roger, can you get back on board and unlock the boat, unlock the door so they can get off? … Roger, you don’t have any firefighting gear at all? No fire extinguishers or anything?” Later in the conversation, the dispatcher asks, “Was that all the crew that jumped off? … Roger, is the vessel fully engulfed right now … Roger, and there’s no escape hatch for any of the people on board?” At one point, the caller says, “I can’t breathe.” Ventura County firefighters were able to reach the boat within 15 minutes, the fire department said. But by then, it was engulfed in flames. Firefighters struggled to extinguish the fire because each time it was snuffed out, flames flared back up — perhaps because of the fuel on board, the Coast Guard’s Aaron Bemis said. By 7:20 a.m., the ship

began to sink in 64 feet of water. The boat had burned down to the water line, Santa Barbara County fire spokesman Mike Eliason said. Many of the passengers were below deck, most likely sound asleep when the fire broke out, authorities said. None of the people who were on board have been identified. The company that operates the Conception, Truth Aquatics, declined to comment to CNN. A local captain responds to the mayday call Capt. Paul Amaral, owner of maritime towing company TowBoatUS Ventura, heard the mayday call from the mainland California city of Ventura. He jumped into his 27-foot boat and started the 30-mile trip to Santa Cruz Island. “Once I got on scene there was only one fire boat trying to put out the fire,” Amaral said Tuesday. “I proceeded to do a coastline search for passengers, and once I didn’t find anyone, I offered assistance on fire fighting.” At one point, the Conception broke free from its anchor and started drifting toward the island — meaning larger firefighting boats couldn’t go any closer. So Amaral had to step in, “I was in a much smaller 27-foot boat and was able to go in close to the boat, attach a chain and pull it away from the island,” he said. After the boat sank, Amaral said several bodies surfaced. He said he helped

with the recovery efforts. “I have responded to several boat fires, but to know these people were trapped on that boat, it’s horrific,” he said. An agonizing wait James Kohls waited anxiously to learn the fate of his brother, Mike Kohls, the galley cook and a deckhand on the Conception. “It’s very surreal at the moment,” he told reporters. “They were going to let me know whether he was one of the survivors that got off.” He said Mike Kohls, a lifelong surfer and father of a

daughter, is typically making breakfast for the passengers on the ship around 4 a.m. Eliason, the fire department spokesman, said it’s still possible some passengers may have survived. But the odds are stacked against them. “We’re still holding hope that someone may have swum to shore,” Eliason said. “When they anchor overnight, they’re pretty close to shore. We have to hope, but we plan for worstcase scenario.” Source: NBC Palm Springs

Women Take the Lead in “Death Positive Movement

By Sarah Chavez On a summer day in 2014, guests arrived at Mitch Metzner and Gabriel Gelbart’s home surrounded by the natural beauty of Topanga, an area nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains that has a reputation as a bohemian haven for Los Angeles artists. The couple had purchased the property with the intention of turning it into a residential hospice where people could spend their final days in a peaceful and supportive environment. A few weeks before, guests had come to celebrate the pair’s marriage, but today they came to attend Gelbart’s funeral. Gelbart died suddenly of a heart attack, leaving a community of family and friends shocked and reeling with grief. Now they had come together to say goodbye. “It was stunningly beautiful and agonizingly sad, says Olivia Bareham, a former geriatric nursing and hospice assistant who organized the funeral. “A collision of heaven and Earth. Gelbart’s body was brought home, to be washed and wrapped in a golden shroud by Bareham and

Metzner. For Metzner, caring for his husband’s body was a natural continuation of the love and care Metzner provided him in life, allowing for a “healing journey through grief that the funeral industry wants to deny us, he explained. For the next three days, mourners could spend time with Gelbart at the couple’s home. Bareham has long sought to ease some of the fear and suffering surrounding death and dying that she observed among her patients and their families. In 2005, she founded Los Angeles-based The Sacred Crossings Institute for Conscious Dying, where she educates and empowers families to care for their deceased loved ones and create home funerals like the one she created for Gelbart. Throughout the couple’s house, Bareham and friends provided a variety of activities for mourners, including the opportunity to decorate the casket with art supplies, or inscribe river rocks that would be used to build a memorial wall on the property. With this funeral, Bareham created a way for people to be truly present, bearing witness to

the end of a life, and a space to process the enormity of their thoughts and emotions. Friends played music; dogs wandered among the bereaved, offering comfort. Food, drink, and collective pain were shared among all. For Metzner, it was “one of the most profound and beautiful experiences of my life. This is not your typical American funeral, though. Bareham is just one of many women who are disrupting the death paradigm by challenging our traditional

funerary practices and advocating for transparency, eco-friendly options, and family involvement. While White patriarchy has spent the past hundred years shutting the doors and pulling the curtain—obfuscating and profiting from one of life’s most significant milestones—modern women are questioning whom our current system is serving and telling the funeral industry that its time is up. Make no mistake, the future of death is

a feminist one. Feminist death advocates argue that the $20 billion funeral industry thrives on our society’s reluctance to face, or even think about, death. Although our fear of death is nothing new, our modern denial of death is. Our current unfamiliarity with natural death has become more informed by horror tropes—including the dead returning to haunt us, or corpses suddenly reanimating Continues on Page 14

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Speak carefully and harmoniously to loved ones. Realize you may be more critical, including selfcriticism. Allow others the benefit of understanding. Always ask for an explanation and listen carefully. What you know is best and what you feel emotionally (frustration, anger, etc.) may be at odds. Choose the right course of action. Then your consciousness, awareness and love expand. The twelve petals of the heart open.

TAURUS Health events occur unexpectedly and healing people are contacted, both of which influence your future. Beware of anything you or others do that steps across boundaries where uncontrolled and disrespectful power may be an issue. In all communications bring forth Right Relations within yourself so that the Right Relations of others can be summoned. In all endeavors maintain the highest of ethics, morals, values and intentions. How one begins a project is how it ends.

GEMINI You find you must change or shift your values and day-today ways of being. You find you must reach out to friends and loved ones and speak with them from your heart. You find you must alter your habits and ways of living so that health can be regained. You find that everything must change and

SEPTEMBER 4 - 10, 2019 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

all of this is good. Each day many are supporting you on inner levels. There is great love for you from the heavens, too.

CANCER New ideas are presented, emerging all levels and parts of your life. Learning is occurring at an accelerated pace. It’s as if you’re in a school but the reality is, you’re concentrating on the here and now. Extra energy is also being offered to you from Mars, the planet that initiates and leads us to action. You are strong, resourceful, intuitive, and actually an excellent gardener. You will teach those who are curious.

LEO Let us spend a few moments in recognition and praise of you. Venus has asked us to honor you a bit more. And so, you’ve become more attractive and at times magnetic. Your heart is flowing with generosity. You offer support when needed, always tending to those more vulnerable than you (you understand vulnerability). You keep secrets, love to work alone, and what is it that I see coming down the road?

VIRGO The words given to Leo soon apply to you. The Sun is shining on your gifts and creative abilities and all you’ve wanted to do now slowly, here and there, comes into manifestation. You have everything you need in terms of energy, resources and time.

Whereas much has been external, notice as you begin to withdraw more and more into yourself. It will be a time of composure, contemplation and peace. For a while.

LIBRA You feel the need to be more social and find yourself at times in groups where everyone recognizes and loves you. And then there are times when you feel out of place, the odd one, not heard, seen, listened to or understood. During the month you will assess your selfidentity, see if you’re the same person from before, and realize new important needs for love, stability and for all things orderly and practical. Tread (act, speak) carefully at work.

SCORPIO There may be conflict and collisions with other people’s ideas. There may be difficulty communicating and/or being understood. Before speaking, think first about your choice of words, intentions and tone. Dedicate yourself to intentions for Goodwill, always making situations better than they were. These are important values to uphold. Careful with travel, be cautious and take no risks. It’s not a good time to gamble, either.

SAGITTARIUS During the month traveling about here and there, you consider your base of operation, what your true foundations are, and how your family heritage has given you

an identity that propels you forward into unknown territory. Do not be concerned if chaos becomes a companion. Chaos is the first step toward a new harmony. Chaos harbors the seeds of creativity, provides excitement and experiences and shreds outworn ways of being. Gather walking sticks.

CAPRICORN Subtle shifts and changes will continue in your life, growing ever more present as the days unfold. You are being gently and quietly transformed to become the person you were meant to be. Tend to all things financial. Create a schedule for money earned and spent. You will notice a return to previous realities. Assess them, record them and find that they were always good. Share with the family what you are writing about. True history sustains us.

AQUARIUS You may feel that all progress is stalled, movements forward take two steps back, and previous roads walked are walked upon again. This is not failure on your part. It’s a review, assessment, revisiting and revision that must occur. It’s also the umbrella under which you will experience the coming autumn season. It will be a time of solitude, retreat and contemplation. Did you recently make a very difficult decision?

PISCES Something comes to rest and perhaps a completion occurs

Get the Most Out of Your Tomato Harvest on the plant five to eight days after the fruit are fully colored, the flavor only gets better. Check plants regularly and keep harvesting, so the plants continue to produce throughout the fall. This also reduces problems with insects and disease attacking overripe or rotting fruit. Store the mature red tomatoes in cool, 45- to 50-degree, conditions with high humidity and they’ll last about 7 to 14 days. Consider pinching off the growing tip of indeterminate tomatoes about a month before the average date of the first fall frost. These plants will keep growing and producing new flowers and fruit until the frost kills the plant. By pruning off the tip towards the end of the growing season, the plant will direct its energy into ripening the existing fruit instead of producing more tomatoes that won’t have time to mature. When the frost is in the forecast, be prepared to protect your plants and harvest. Cover

in the coming weeks. You will then prepare for new actions and activities that define the rest of the year. Notice your thoughts, impressions, ideas and intuitions providing subtle signs concerning your next steps. Before anything new begins, some things come to an end. A farewell may be on your lips. In all things be disciplined, kind, loving yet structured. Eliminate all that’s unnecessary. Soon it will be time to move on.

plants with sheets, lightweight blankets, or floating row covers in the afternoon. All but the row covers must be removed each day when the temperatures are above freezing. Since row covers allow air, light, and water through to the plants while trapping the heat, they can remain in place until the end of the harvest season. Once you grow tired of fighting the frost, consider picking any tomatoes that are starting to show some color and allow them to finish ripening indoors. The blossom end of the tomato should be greenish-white or starting to show the color of the tomato variety you’re growing. Store green tomatoes in a cool 60- to 65- degree location to extend their storage life. Spread out the tomatoes on heavy paper or wrap them individually in a newspaper, so the fruit does not touch. This prevents one rotten tomato from spoiling nearby fruit. The green tomatoes will

Top Tips to Transition Back to Work After Baby

M

FAMILY FEATURES

any new parents spend hours preparing for the arrival of a new baby – reading books, seeking professional advice and consulting friends and family. However, in focusing on birth, they may not get to prepare for other big milestones, like the transition back to work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more women are returning to work than ever before – more than 70% of women with children under 18 are in the labor force. However, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest new mothers may not be getting the support they need from health care providers, family members and employers to meet their breastfeeding goals. “Parenthood is complicated on its own,” said Melissa Gonzales, executive vice president of the Americas for Medela LLC. “Adding in a full workload is something that many new mothers take on within weeks after birth. With nearly two-thirds of moms going back to work after baby, there is a clear need to better the return-to-work transition for mothers in

workplaces across America. There are easy ways for employers to simplify that process so parents don’t have to choose between returning to work and continuing to provide breast milk to their babies.” Whether you are preparing for maternity leave, about to return to work after a baby or have already made the transition, the experts at Medela recommend considering these important workplace qualities: Time and space. Employers are required to provide reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for one year after the child’s birth. Employers are also required to provide a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public which may be used by an employee to express breast milk. If you are planning to pump, check to see if your office has a private space to do so, and ensure there are accommodations to allow you to properly clean and sanitize your breast pump. Travel considerations. If you are required to travel for work, look into your company’s existing policy on breast milk shipping and storage.

With more women in the workforce, some companies include breast milk shipping as a benefit for women who have recently given birth who may need to travel. Supportive resources. Some companies provide educational resources about continuing to breastfeed while working full-time. Ask if your employer provides resources to help you navigate the demands of breastfeeding, or if it provides access to virtual on-demand support such as a lactation consultant. See if your employer can connect you to another mom or parent who can help you or offer advice as you make the transition. Other accommodations. As breast milk feeding becomes increasingly commonplace, companies are implementing policies to better accommodate working parents. Examples include extended parental leave, flexible hours, on-site child care and access to programs such as March of Dimes’ Healthy Babies Healthy Business program and New Moms’ Healthy Returns, a resource for employers created by Medela and Mamava. Learn more at NewMomsHealthyReturns.com.

3 Tips for Breastfeeding at Work Returning to work after the birth of a baby demands organization and prioritization. This is especially true for parents who want to continue breastfeeding. Consider these tips when planning the transition: 1. Know your legal rights. Educate yourself on your federally protected rights so you can take a stand if your rights aren’t respected. Employers in the U.S. are required to provide breastfeeding moms with a private place and reasonable break time to pump. 2. Bring a backup. Consider keeping a spare breast pump kit in your car or at your office, just in case you find yourself without the parts you need to pump, like storage bags. You may even consider an extra breast pump to eliminate the hassle of carrying one back and forth. 3. Reduce unnecessary stressors. Stress can affect your milk supply and make pumping more difficult. It can be a challenge to manage all the stressors, but finding a space at work that feels calm and peaceful can make a difference. Make signs so you’re not interrupted, and schedule time on your calendar so colleagues know you’re not available.

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Chanya Button’s “Vita & Virginia” - A Cinematic Gift to Movie-Going Audiences While I generally don’t begin a review citing production values, I’m compelled to send a love letter to Chanya Button both for the screenplay, co-written with Dame Eileen Atkins, and for her delicate, but commanding direction of this historic, fascinating true story. Servicing the script with the eye of a fine artist, Director of Photography Carlos de Carvalho, created a highly textured, moody look to the film with each meticulously shot scene a stand-along museum quality painting capturing the lifestyle and times of the bohemian high society of 1920s - the backdrop for the legendary story of two of the most successful 20th century writers – Vita SackvilleWest and Virginia Woolf. Socialite Vita played to perfection by Gemma Arterton, captures the essence of her character who is essentially a sexual predator flaunting dalliances with delight. Her mother, Lady Sackville, played with steely perfection by Isabella Rossellini, is disgusted by her behavior and informs her renegade daughter that if she publishes her latest book, all future funds will be cut off. Vita tries to defend herself saying that she dressed up as a man for research purposes, but her excuse falls on deaf ears, and at the risk of being cut-off, she stops the printing of the book. Vita’s husband, Harold Nicolson, well played by Rupert Penry-Jones, is a kind, considerate man who understands his wife’ sexuality and generally rescues Vita from her latest paramour. He is a diplomat and needs her to pretend that she is a devoted, loving wife, which she reluctantly does, while at the same time indulges her sexual desires with women. At a party, Vita sees the

enigmatic Virginia Woolf, played to perfection by Elizabeth Debicki, who mines the deepest recesses of her character’s psyche capturing her nuances and insecurities. She is dancing, and their eyes lock on each other. Virginia asks Vita why her books sell more than hers and Vita quips, “Popularity is never a sign of genius.” Immediately smitten with the elusive famous writer, Vita asks if she would go away with her, which Virginia initially declines. With her hooks set out to capture the elusive and seemingly troubled Virginia, they begin to exchange letters and in one scene in a greenhouse bursting with a profusion of vibrant, glorious colors, Vita gives her prey a pair of matching sunglasses. There could be a metaphor here, perhaps looking through the world through tinted glasses. Although the attraction is growing, Virginia resists the famous author’s advances and is always beset with the thought that something is wrong with her. Virginia’s devoted, most understanding husband Leonard Woolf, wonderfully played by Peter Ferdinando, who, despite knowing his wife is probably bisexual, is protective of her well being. Interestingly, each of these women has husbands who adore and protect them and when necessary, accept their attraction to the same sex. Overwhelmed with her infatuation with Vita, Virginia suffers a nervous breakdown. Her doctor thinks her writing is causing her problem, commenting, “Women can’t cope.” Vita tries to see Virginia, but the family does not allow it. She tells them she would like to take Virginia home with her to restore her health. At first, they refuse but subsequently agree to her proposal. In a beautifully crafted scene, they finally

Vita wants her newest paramour to leave her husband and run away with her, but Virginia says she can’t because “Leonard keeps me grounded, and I love him.” In an emotional, but a somehow transformative moment for Virginia, Vita arrives at a gallery opening arm in arm with Mary Campbell played by Thalia Heffernan. The shock of seeing them together drives this vulnerable writer to the edge of a river, and for a moment, it looked as though she was going to commit suicide. * But instead, Virginia uses Vita as her muse to create a new character who begins as a man and transforms into a woman or as she puts it, “The story of a hero who turns out to be a heroine.” The title of the book was “Orlando” which, like most of her books, is a literary success.** Writing the book was a cathartic experience, and as a result, the attraction to Vita takes on a different complexion. Brian Wilson, lower left, and Al Jardine, lower right, leading a large ensemble through dozens of Beach Boys classics. Photo by Robert Kinsler Continued from Page 1 the Zombies debuted a newlywritten song titled “Merry Go Round,” a stellar and infectious rock track complete with some shining harmony vocals. Every time Blunstone’s amazing tenor would fly or Argent would take off on a virtuoso keyboards solo, crowd members would cheer. The Zombies’ closed out their magical set with a terrific version of their first hit “She’s Not There,” which featured Argent and Toomey trading flashy solos before Koch and Rodford got into the act showcasing their artful chops too. Wilson’s headlining performance was more complex for the audience — as well as yours truly — to process. Wilson, 77, had postponed a two-week tour in June 2019 focused on “Pet Sounds,” noting his longrunning bout with mental illness was behind the decision Watching Wilson wheeled on stage and positioned behind a piano (often motionless during parts of the 95-minute performance) was surprising and unsettling for many in the crowd, but the good news is that the celebrated singer-songwriter brought a terrific ensemble with him to recreate a parade of timeless classics from the 1960s and early ‘70s. Chief among the contributors who brought the classics to life were his Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin. Jardine, 76, was particularly strong throughout the show with his excellent work on rhythm guitar and vocals adding to the effectiveness of the set. Indeed, Jardine conjured up magic when nailing the lead vocals on “Help Me, Rhonda,” a 1965 hit that first showcased his vocals in the group. Chaplin’s vocals and fiery guitar work was put in the spotlight during a rousing take on “Sail On Sailor.” A total of 29 songs were performed, with the biggest hits coming at the beginning of the set and later to close things out. In the middle of the set were 17 mostly-unknown

Women Take the Lead in “Death Positive” Movement Continued from Page 7

to grasp at the living—than by facts. According to Ernest Becker, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Denial of Death, awareness of our mortality haunts us and motivates us. Becker argues that our actions are motivated by this fear, and in a desperate effort to mitigate our existential terror of ceasing to exist, we seek out distractions. We engage in what he calls “immortality projects” that help us establish legacies that will live on after we are dead, often through our work or by having children. Because of this fear, and the established systems that shield us from healthy engagement with death, we’ve become death- and griefilliterate. As a result, we have industry-led funerals that leave little room for meaningful family involvement and require costly products and services that are often unnecessary and can harm the environment. The median cost of a funeral today is $8,500. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers recorded a 227.1% increase from 1986 to 2017—almost double the price increase for all other consumer items. As a result, funerals have become a luxury that many families struggle to afford, leaving some in “funeral poverty” to pay for them. Some states offer assistance, such as Michigan’s Burial Services program, which offers up to $455 for a memorial service and cremation payable directly to a funeral director. Such social assistance programs to help with funeral costs vary widely from state to state, but generally cover only a portion of fees. For those without the financial means to pay, responsibility falls to the state, which typically cremates remains or donates the bodies to medical schools. In contrast, according to the National Home Funeral Alliance, people can expect to pay about $200 for a home funeral, saving thousands of dollars. This amount usually includes dry ice to keep the body cold, gas and permit fees, and a container for the body—such as a simple pine or cardboard coffin— as well as a permit fee for transportation and copies of the death certificate. Costs for final disposition are extra: Direct cremation rings in at $600 to $1,100, and burial varies greatly depending on personal preference. It isn’t just the industry’s financial costs that are staggering; it’s the environmental ones, too. Most modern funerals begin with embalming—the practice of injecting toxic chemicals into the body to delay the decomposition process. Embalming is

14

DesertSTAR

not required by law, yet we place embalming fluid containing more than 827,000 gallons of toxic chemicals into the earth annually. In cemeteries, embalmed bodies are placed in caskets, which use up to 20 million board feet of hardwood and 64,500 tons of steel each year to produce. All of this material is then placed inside concrete vaults to make it easier to maintain cemetery landscaping. And while cremation is more economical, a single cremation consumes as much energy as a 500mile car journey and emits pollutants such as mercury, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide into the air. Life might end with death, but the drain on resources doesn’t. Opting for standard burial means you are also expecting to be provided with “perpetual care”—an industry term to denote the expectation that your grave will be tended to, well, forever. This means lifetimes of land and water use, pesticides, and labor to keep the surrounding landscape manicured and attractive. In other words: We’ve been taking a natural process that unites all living things and making it altogether unnatural. The corpse has become a vessel for our death anxieties, a stark reminder of our inevitable future. We spend billions of dollars on antiaging products because aging reminds us of our own mortality. Even in death, our denial continues as we opt to appear “lifelike” and seal bodies away in caskets that promise to “protect” us from decomposition. Is it any wonder many of us are somewhat relieved that the funeral industry is there to help us deny death just a little bit longer? Today, most of us die in busy hospitals or nursing homes, often in the company of strangers. Funeral homes quickly remove our dead and perform those final physical acts of care in preparing the body. We then go through the motions of performing sterile rituals—devoid of meaning—forced to sum up the significance of a human life during the brief couple of hours the funeral home or church has been rented to us. And in people’s final moments, they are again abandoned to strangers, who will either bury them deep in the earth or, like the mythic Charon, ferry them into the flames. We can do better for our loved ones. In fact, we have done better. A little more than a century ago, we died at home. Our bodies were lovingly washed and dressed for burial by our kin. Funerals were individualand community-centered— and women were typically at the helm of the process.

Before the Civil War, “The Good Death” was an extension of ars moriendi, “The Art of Dying,” a Christian concept dating back to the 15th century. Dying a good death was a universally shared concept that was integral to life, which played out at home, where the dying individual was supported through this important passage by family and friends. It was believed that a dying person, poised on the threshold of heaven, could impart divine wisdom and provide reassurance that in the afterlife all would be reunited in a place free from the pains and sorrows of earthly life. Then the war came. Americans greatly underestimated the scale and duration of the Civil War, initially believing it would resolve quickly and with little bloodshed. Instead, according to historian David Blight, it left a culture of death and mourning beyond imagination. Families were forced to contend with the fact that their loved ones were dying far from home, alone on battlefields without the comforts provided by The Good Death. For those who could afford it, modern embalming was introduced as a solution to temporarily preserve soldiers’ bodies for the long journey home. Embalmers would chase after battles, setting up camp and often propping up real embalmed bodies outside their tents, like storefront mannequins, to advertise their services. A demand for costly cast-iron caskets to transport bodies gave rise to another new venture. The transition of embalming from wartime necessity to mainstream practice can be traced back to President Abraham Lincoln, whose body was embalmed and placed on a funeral train that toured 180 cities. The tour was a phenomenon, with mourners lining up for hours to catch a glimpse of the body. Lincoln’s embrace of embalming secured its place in American culture. Now that industrious men had found a way to make death profitable, they did so with zeal and ushered in the modern funeral industry. New enterprises to fashionably accessorize death with elaborate caskets, hearses, and mourning clothing emerged, followed by the relatively new roles of funeral director and embalmer. The funeral and medical industry paralleled each other in numerous ways by “professionalizing” themselves. They opened schools, embraced new technology, and took advantage of false narratives to position themselves as guardians of public health and safety that alone would restore dignity to the processes September 4, 2019

of birth and death. While the funeral industry pushed the myth that a corpse was dangerous and needed to be sanitized through embalming, physicians targeted midwives, whom they labeled “barbaric.” In 1911, one obstetrics professor went so far as to describe midwives as “dirty, ignorant, untrained” and an evil that must be controlled. Death became a specialized profession solely for men—one that employed the “science” of embalming, a service that separated them from the duties that had previously fallen to women, who were removed from the process. The next big shift in our modern deathways occurred in 1912, when door-to-door salesman Hubert Eaton arrived in Los Angeles with the goal of creating a cemetery and mortuary completely devoid of “signs of earthly death.” That’s right: a cemetery and funeral home without death. Eaton was a devout Christian who believed cemeteries should reinforce the idea of eternal life. Eaton essentially rebranded death by using language and aesthetics that were comforting and even glamorous. The cemetery was now designated a “park.” Mortuary “slumber rooms” were decorated to evoke the feel of a Hollywood starlet’s boudoir, draped with pink satin and lush velvet. Speakers piped in the merry sounds of birdsong and species of trees that lost their leaves

were banned as symbolic reminders of death. Traditional headstones were replaced with flat markers, set low in the sod so views of the lush lawns would not be inconvenienced by reminders that corpses lay in repose 6 feet under. Forest Lawn in Los Angeles was the first to combine a cemetery, mortuary, chapels, and florist under one roof. Convenience, the powerful appeal of being the premier choice for celebrity weddings and funerals, and clever marketing that sold consumers an idyllic Hollywood ending became the industry standard— but death and life are far more complicated. This commodification of death has resulted in one of the most profound and transformational events of our lives being mediated and staged through two industries—medical and funeral—that were initially created to financially and socially benefit men. Women have fought for control over their bodies for centuries, in life and now in death, as modern women work to subvert patriarchal systems and once again take up the mantle of The Good Death. While the media’s ubiquitous “wellness” trends and discussions of living healthier lifestyles rarely mention death, the women whose stories follow are a small example of a growing movement to help Americans die well. 5 Common Questions for Memorializing a Loved One

By Desert Star Staff One of the most difficult conversations in a person’s life typically takes place near the end of that life. Planning for a funeral can put an emotional strain on family members and friends, but some of the stress can be relieved when the most common questions have answers. Start by examining your options. While funeral homes generally have similar offerings, they can also vary quite a bit in pricing and other amenities. It’s important to choose a funeral home you feel comfortable will meet the emotional needs of your family members and be sensitive to your budget. Speaking with a funeral director to assist in planning and preparing for memorial services once you’ve settled on a funeral home is one of the easiest ways to find clarity during a stressful, often confusing, period of time. Consider these five common questions funeral directors are asked, along with advice and direction from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA): How much does a funeral cost? The value of a funeral is often more important than cost

for families, as it should provide an opportunity to remember and honor loved ones. While the national median cost of a funeral is $7,360, the most meaningful service isn’t necessarily the most expensive. The price is determined by the elements a family chooses to incorporate. There are meaningful touches that cost little to nothing to add. A licensed funeral director can provide guidance about all of the options available to make a tribute meaningful. How do I ensure my family knows my endof-life wishes? A survey conducted by Remembering A Life found nearly 3 in 5 Americans aren’t confident they could plan a funeral for themselves. A funeral is an important life event that helps those grieving a death take the first steps toward healing. Having discussions with those close to you can help ensure the service reflects your wishes and is meaningful and healing for loved ones.

service after cremation. When it comes to laying your cremated remains to rest, you also have options. According to the NFDA 2019 Cremation and Burial Report, about 42% of cremated remains are returned to families, 35.2% are buried at a cemetery, 16% are scattered at noncemetery locations and 8.1% are placed in a columbarium.

Women Take the Lead in “Death Positive” Movement

Continued from Page 14

Death Cafes Death cafes are informal, public gatherings for people to discuss all things death, with the hope that those discussions will help them to live better lives. According to the Death Cafe website, 8,848 cafes have been hosted since 2011. The cafes are overwhelmingly hosted by women, including Milwaukee resident Shantell Riley, whose son died from gun violence. After observing a lack of support and communication surrounding loss, she was compelled to become a host. Conversations are guided by the attendees themselves. “We laugh, we cry, but, most importantly, we talk,” Riley says. “It is exciting when you hear about how these conversations influence them and the impact it has on living their lives.” Caregivers Most of the 40 million people in the U.S. acting as caregivers for aging family members identify as women. “The U.S. health care system can be incredibly difficult to navigate,” says Aisha Adkins, who in 2017 founded Atlantabased organization Our Turn 2 Care to fill the gaps. The organization provides information and resources and helps connect marginalized

millennial caregivers to each other. “Initially, Our Turn 2 Care was a response to the fear and isolation I felt as a young Black woman,” Adkins says. “Not only was I unprepared to provide the unique medical support my family now needed, I was also unable to plan for my own future.”

Dying Well In a profession that often views death as a failure—that which is to be avoided— doctors have reported that talking about dying, both with patients and among colleagues, is challenging. Too often the focus is on sustaining life, which frequently comes at great physical, emotional, and financial costs. A palliative care specialist, Dr. Sunita Puri wrote That Good Night: Life and Medicine in the Eleventh Hour, a book to help doctors and patients focus on quality of life in lieu of employing extraordinary measures that only prolong suffering for both the individual and their loved ones. Puri encourages people not to shy away from talking about death, because it will help to clarify a plan that will augment happiness, comfort, and the things that are most meaningful to a patient in their final days. Death Doulas The largest sector of the

female-led death revolution is death doulas, women who are reclaiming their role at the deathbed. The International End of Life Doula Association offers training programs that regularly sell out and have trained more than 2,000 people in just under three years. Death doulas are “trained professionals with expertise and skills in supporting the dying person and the network of family, loved ones, and friends, to maintain the desired quality of life during the active dying process,” Seattle-based death doula Lashanna Williams says.

Rest in Peace Eco-friendly options are gaining ground, including green burial and aquamation. The latter “uses gentle water flow, temperature, and alkalinity to accelerate our ecosystem’s natural method of decomposing organic matter,” providing the same result as flame cremation, says Darci Bernard, coowner of an aquamation facility for pets in Seattle. The biggest opponents of aquamation have been men, including casket-makers, conservative politicians, and religious figures. Another option making headlines after becoming legalized in Washington state is recomposition. Katrina Spade is the founder of September 4, 2019

Recompose, a public-benefit corporation developing a natural alternative to conventional cremation and burial. Similar to composting, recomposition gently transforms bodies into soil, which is then returned to families who can use it to grow trees or nourish gardens, creating new life through death.

Make Your Child’s Vision Health a Priority this School Year

By Desert Star Staff Children’s vision is paramount to their performance in school and life. One in four children deals with a vision impairment that impacts his or her ability to learn, according to eye health and safety organization Prevent Blindness. Many of these cases are undiagnosed, and failing to identify and treat poor vision health early can lead to difficulties in the classroom, on the playing field and beyond. One of the most prevalent vision issues in children is myopia, or nearsightedness. The condition causes close-up objects to appear clear, but everything becomes blurry and out of focus at a distance. “Parents have invested billions this year to prepare their children for school, but without the ability to see their best, children will be at a

disadvantage in the classroom,” said Dr. Millicent Knight, senior vice president of Essilor’s Customer Development Group. Although some schools perform yearly vision screenings, those evaluations aren’t always enough to identify vision issues. Parents can take a proactive role in their child’s vision health with these tips from the experts at Essilor. Watch for the Symptoms of Myopia Many kids believe blurry vision is normal because they’ve never known anything different. As a parent, being able to spot the signs is key to managing symptoms and potentially slowing progression, if caught early enough. Keep an eye out for these symptoms: • Squinting to see distant objects, like the board in the classroom • Sitting too

close to the TV • Holding books close when reading • Experiencing eyestrain or headaches Schedule a Comprehensive Eye Exam One of the most effective ways to keep your child’s eyes

healthy is to schedule an annual comprehensive eye exam with an eyecare professional. Not only will a doctor check for vision problems that could interfere with school performance and potentially affect safety, he or she can offer advanced lens technology that keeps pace with the changing needs of children’s eye health. Just like annual doctor visits, eye exams should be scheduled once a year as part of your child’s health routine. “We’ve seen a huge change in children who couldn’t see and when they are given glasses they light up because the world is clearer,” said Dr. Ryan Parker, O.D., director of professional development at Essilor of America. Avoid Overexposure “Today, children’s eyes are exposed to harmful blue light, ultraviolet light (UV) and digital eyestrain like never before,” Parker said. While technology is crucial for learning in today’s digital

world, research suggests too much screen time may put kids at risk of developing myopia as well as digital eyestrain, resulting in tired eyes, headaches, itchy eyes, blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light. To help reduce eyestrain, have children take periodic breaks from their devices and head outdoors. Know Where to Go for Help “Parents also need to know that where you go matters as much as when you go,” Knight said. Choosing eyecare professionals, like the network of local, independent Essilor Experts, who prioritize the most advanced lens technologies and are dedicated to their patients’ individual needs, can make a difference in the vision outcomes for your children.
