By Desert Star Staff At least 10 people have been injured after an overnight shooting in San Bernardino, California, police said, adding that three of them are in “extremely serious” condition. The incident took place in an apartment complex at 1277 E. Lynwood Drive on Sunday night, according to San Bernardino Police Capt. Rich Lawhead, as cited by local media. “We found 10 victims down at the scene. Three are extremely critical,” Lawhead said. The city is about 90km east of Los Angeles.
Police believe there was “an exchange of gunfire,” according to the officer. “I can tell you multiple shots were fired, I don’t want to guess how many,” he added. According to Lawhead, people had gathered to play a game, possibly dice, when the shooting happened. “It was a chaotic scene,” he admitted, adding that the suspects fled the scene. Local residents described the incident in the apartment complex. “My brother-inlaw could hear bullets flying past our house, he was outside at the time of the

Healthcare Insurance Premiums to rise
By Janice Gough Obama’s health law is failing in many ways, and rising costs must be fixed. In my opinion, the only way this plan would have worked as is if every person was insured. The primary goal behind changing Healthcare was that we would have less “uninsured’s,” but that has not been the case, and without having more people insured, costs have risen at unprecedented levels. I know that there will be more and more uninsured. People can’t afford it. When you explain to an insured what the new rate will be,

they are put in a shock mode. As far as whether one will protect or not, some people have looked at the penalty for not carrying insurance, as being a reward rather than a punishment. The sanctions were an insignificant amount, compared to paying for high costing plans with high out of pocket costs. It even caused some insured’s to artificially impoverish themselves to get Medicaid or receive subsidies thru the ACA. Medicaid is based on income qualification only. Obama’s health care law provides two kinds of grants to help keep costs down for people with low to moderate incomes. Tax credits reduce monthly premiums for people who qualify. And payments to insurance companies cover a portion of their outof-pocket costs, reducing the high deductibles and copays that are standard for plans in the individual market. Another result of this flawed legislation is that there are declining choices of providers; doctors and hospitals. A major insurance carrier will also stop offering the plans in most of the states, forcing about 10 percent of people insured through Covered California to buy a new plan. All 11 existing insurers will continue to provide
coverage next year, although Anthem is significantly reducing its coverage of providers. Anthem Blue Cross will continue offering plans only in Santa Clara County and parts of Northern California and the Central Valley. A few of the rural counties around the country have been left without any insurers offering plans through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces, and many others have just one option. And, to get the AVCP, Advanced Premium Tax Credits, you must go thru the State Exchange. Today’s health insurance landscape will see significant changes for 2019, especially since they’re no longer an “individual mandate” to be insured by a Qualified Health Plan (QHP), and the substantial premium increases that are about to hit the private marketplace for this year’s enrollment period. Those impacted by these changes the most are individuals and families who do not qualify for (APTC) “credits,” which make QHP’s affordable through The Health Insurance Marketplace. Who would have guessed that all those FREE services included in the ACA plans would cause hug rate increases?? They are called the Essential Benefits. You cannot add additional benefits,
without driving up the cost of healthcare. And, in many cases, forcing a person to purchase something they may not use. In the period before ACA was passed, I was a big proponent of being able to purchase only the benefits one needed. I would always give the example of why would a person who is over “childbearing” ages need to buy Maternity coverage? And why should you pay for things you do not need. The more benefits incorporated into the plan, the more you spend, period! When you award people with Free or low charge benefits, utilization increases. Also, causing rate increases. Doctors will tend to run more tests on you, which bumps up the doctor’s pay, but increases claims costs. More people will use their Free benefits even when it is not necessary. This happened years ago when the companies offer low co-pays as low as $1 to$5 to see a doctor. Utilization skyrocketed, and the next year, rates increased significantly, and co-pays increased also. The point being is that there is no “Free Lunch.” Californians premiums increase in 2017 by more than 13 percent Costs tend to vary significantly across the state, with higher prices in Northern California where
Board Elections Part III
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL [Readers: With many questions on elections, this is the final installment of a series]
Dear Kelly, We successfully recalled our HOA board, yet the next day after the vote the recalled directors held a special meeting and enacted lots of business. We believe that everything the board enacted after it was recalled can be reversed with a blanket resolution by the new board. What do you think? If a former board purported to make decisions when a new board is in place, the former board’s decisions could be rejected by the current board. Best to your associations, Kelly. Kelly: Our HOA recently had a total recall and election. Our board has staggered terms. The new president handed out the longer terms based on number of votes received. Our bylaws specify for the initial organizational election the drawing of lots to determine the longer terms. Should the president have followed the bylaws, as the situation is identical? Dear Mr. Richardson: In our board election, the ballot count was not announced because the board said no. If a board member resigns after a new board is elected how is a replacement board member determined? R.S., El Cajon Dear R.S.: Under Civil Code 5120 votes must be counted in the open. 5120(b) requires that the tabulated election results be announced no later than 15 days after the votes are counted. Corporations Code 7224 provides that vacancies are to be filled by a quorum of the board. Such an action occurs in an open board meeting. Thanks, Kelly Dear Kelly: Can the 3-year proxy be used to establish the required quorum for a vote on a bylaws amendment? In the past, we have relied on the
consolidation among hospitals and doctors has given them more leverage to negotiate higher payments from Insurers. Premiums for consumers on “silver tier” plans, the most popular, could spike even more if subsidies are taken away. The average 12.5 percent increase is down just slightly from last year; Consumers could lower their increase to about 3 percent if they switch to the lowest-priced plans. Insurance plans for next year will be available for purchase in California between Nov. 1 thru Jan 31, if you can afford them! However, there will be other options to consider. Read my continuation of addressing Healthcare Insurance in next month’s article in which I will discuss new possibilities. I must say that the direction we are moving toward were the similar to alternative solutions before Obamacare. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs, Ca. •••••••••••••• 3-year proxy to establish the required quorum for election of board members. Can it also be used to establish the required quorum for the bylaws amendment vote? F.M., Irvine Dear F.M.: Yes, if the proxy is a general proxy (and not limited to only board elections) or a proxy solely to establish quorum, it can be used for quorum on the bylaws amendment. Landlord owners who do not wish to take the time to vote by written ballot can help by sending a quorum-only proxy to the association annually . Thanks, Kelly Kelly G. Gun-Control Advocates Push for Stronger Reforms in Florida
The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which tracks firearms legislation, gives Florida a failing grade for its gun laws this year. (Pixabay)
By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The latest mass shooting in Jacksonville is seen by some as another example of why Florida’s attempt to reform its gun laws falls short. Guncontrol advocates flooded social media with hashtags like #AnotherFLShooting and #GunshineState, in frustration over the latest shooting at a video-game tournament. In February, state lawmakers passed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. It bans the sale or possession of so-called “bump stocks,” gives law enforcement more power to seize weapons from those deemed mentally unfit, and raises the firearmpurchase age from 18 to 21. But other key provisions were kicked out of the bill,
says Andy Pelosi, co-chair with the Florida Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence. “You know Florida’s still got a long way to go and you know, the thing that we’re working on and we still want to continue hammer home is the need for background checks on all gun sales. There’s legislation that was put in last year, and we know it will be reintroduced this year,” says Pelosi. Pelosi’s group also pushed for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Senate Republicans rejected the proposal, as the National Rifle Association’s Florida lobbyist claimed it was too far-reaching. The new law also has in place a three-day waiting period for firearm purchases, with some exceptions. Pelosi says while his group
will continue to pursue legislative fixes, he thinks the problem is more systemic. “You know we’ve got a serious, serious gun problem and there is not just one thing that’s going to solve this,” says Pelosi. “I think there is cultural issue here – really trying to make people think twice. Do you really need a weapon, you know? Do you have to have that gun?” Seventeen people lost their lives in the Parkland shooting; five died in a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport, and 49 in the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016. An NRA spokesperson has called for ending or changing gun-free zones after the shooting at the Jacksonville entertainment center, which bans firearms on the premises.
By Desert Star Staff Active shooter incidents are rare. You are 700 times more likely to die in a car crash, for example, than from an active shooter event, according to the National Safety Council. However, these terrifying events are on the rise. Experts say that being prepared can save lives. “Sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring a community together – a hurricane, a flood or an active shooter. How much better would it be to be prepared in advance and mitigate that tragedy?” says Dan Martin, a retired police officer in New Lenox, Ill., and leader of the New Lenox Safe Communities coalition. “Each time I lead an active shooter course I see lightbulbs go on in people’s heads that they can make a difference.” Because most active shooter incidents are over in a couple of minutes -- often before first-responders can arrive on the scene -- Martin
says it’s crucial for private citizens to turn their panic into effective action and know what steps they can take to improve their chances of survival. “Preparing for an active shooter emergency starts with situational awareness. Know what is going on around you all the time, trust your instincts and devise a plan,” he says. To prepare, everyone can take the following steps: • Learn emergency notification systems and distinctive alarms used in places you frequent. • Identify two possible escape routes wherever you are. • Find places to hide. During an active shooter event, don’t spend important moments panicking. Public safety experts say that you should be ready to do one of the following: • Run: Always the first choice; get out and take others with you. • Hide: Find a place
to hide; act quickly, turn off lights, lock and block doors, silence cell phones • Fight: The last resort; improvise weapons and work alone or with others to disarm the shooter. Community leaders can improve safety in their public spaces, such as concert venues, shopping malls, houses of worship and other places where people gather, by offering residents free
active shooter training from the National Safety Council. The Council’s “Surviving an Active Shooter Event” is a two-hour training that covers how active shooter situations unfold, how to be situationally aware and what actions are necessary to improve one’s odds of survival. Training can be led by any community leader who can effectively speak in front of groups and follow detailed course materials. To learn
more about partnering with NSC to bring active shooter training to your community, visit nsc.org/trainactiveshooter. Active shooter incidents are terrifying and often result in multiple fatalities very quickly. While no one wants to dwell on such devastating, worst-case scenarios, being prepared can save lives. Take steps to learn how to make your community safer. Source: (StatePoint)
By Desert Star Staff LINCOLN, Neb. – A group of 16 states, led by Nebraska, has filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to confirm that businesses can fire people for being transgender. States want to reverse an appeals court ruling that a funeral home in Michigan discriminated against a worker who transitioned during employment. Danielle Conrad, executive director of the ACLU of Nebraska, says it’s clear that the termination was made because of arbitrary factors not based on job performance. “We strongly believe
that Attorney General Doug Peterson does not speak for all Nebraskans who are, in fact, fair minded, and we really feel that this effort is out of step with Nebraska values,” she states. The states claim that gender identity is a completely different concept from “sex,” and argue the lower court was wrong to rule that identity is protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, a federal law that prohibits employers from discrimination based on sex, race, color, national origin and religion. Conrad disagrees, and notes there’s a growing
consensus from courts across the U-S that gender identity and expression are protected. “There is an emerging and strong body of case law where court after court has found that employment discrimination based upon who somebody is and who somebody loves is wrong, and it flies in the face of our principles of fairness,” she stresses. Conrad adds that Nebraska’s attorney general also is out of step with the business community when it comes to fair treatment in the workplace, and notes business groups have supported non-discrimination
laws in the state Legislature. Eli Rigatuso is a transgender LGBT advocate and co-founder of the Omaha group Heartland Pride. He says he’s concerned that Nebraska’s role in the amicus brief could put the state on the map as a leader in hate. “It’s disappointing to me,
as a transgender human being, that they would want to make it OK for people to fire me just because I’m trans,” he states. Nebraska currently has no laws on the books that provide explicit statewide non-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender people.

6 Ways to Head Back to School in Style
By Desert Star Staff When it comes to backto-school fashion, it’s all about the intersection of form and function. Here are five ways to stylishly accessorize and gear up for school. 1. Get covered. Ensure the longevity of pricey tablets, phones and other mobile devices with
durable, waterproof cases. This is an opportunity for students to not only take better care of their items but to also express themselves. Cases come in all styles and prints these days, replicating favorite paintings, landscape photography and more, and many online retailers even allow you to design a unique case
by uploading your own image. 2. Make math fun. Strut your stuff in math class with a stylish calculator such as the Casio fx-9750GII. It comes in pink, blue or white and has 200+ hours of battery life and a variety of graphing functions, making it both an item you need, and one that you’ll want.
3. Pump up your kicks. This back-to-school season do a quick audit of family footwear, even for feet that are no longer growing. Worn out shoes can cause discomfort and foot issues down the line and of course, everyone wants to start the school year looking sharp. Put your best foot forward with new pairs for all your needs: sneakers for sports and gym class, loafers, oxfords or your style of choice for everyday use, and looking ahead, boots for when the weather gets cold. 4. Keep time. Keep time with a stylish timepiece that looks great with any outfit while keeping you organized. Check out those from the Vintage Timepiece Collection from Casio, which have a classic design and a variety of useful features, including alarms, stopwatches and auto-calendars. Water resistant and EL-backlit, they’re a practical accessory for getting to class on time. 5. Set your sights.
By Desert Star Staff With each new school year comes a brand-new set of subjects, books and teachers. It also means new technologies being introduced into the classroom. As students head back to school, here is a look at the technologies that will support STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) learning this year. • Digital Art: Enter some art classes today and you may find a dearth of paints, brushes and charcoal. Today, art students can learn the same painting, drawing and sculpting techniques they previously would have learned using traditional supplies, only with digital tools instead. While the traditional mediums aren’t
completely going away any time soon, today’s students can benefit from the versatility that cutting-edge tools supply, from the time a project idea is conceived through when the finished product is shared with the world. • Visual Science: Whether it’s an anatomical diagram of the human heart or a map of the Milky Way, every science teacher knows that a picture’s worth a thousand words, particularly when it’s a sharp, clear picture. Teachers and students are benefitting from top of the line projection technology in classrooms. The LampFree Projectors from Casio’s Core Series, for example, have the ability to project images and video wirelessly from smart
phones, laptop computers and tablets, expanding teachers’ ability to create engaging lesson plans. Additionally, the mercury-free Laser and LED hybrid light source is energy-efficient, reducing power consumption by up to 40 percent, a bonus lesson in environmental stewardship. • Accessible Computer Science: Certain innovations are helping students go beyond just consuming technology. Apps abound for independent learners, as well as educators, to use in their classrooms to help computer science students of all ages and abilities to hone their coding skills. From straight-forward instructional apps to those that gamify the learning process, young coders-in-training have a wealth
of resources at their fingertips. • Intuitive Music: New technology is rocking the music education boat in an effort to make learning an instrument more intuitive. For example, Casio’s LK-265 is outfitted with such tools as a Key Lighting System, Voice Fingering Guide and Step-up Lesson System, enabling beginners to learn built-in songs at their own pace. Additionally, an LCD display makes mastering music notation and correct hand positioning easy. Students don’t even have to wait for teacher feedback -- the keyboards have a Scoring System that evaluates performance. • In-Depth Math: Today’s students are getting a closer look at the inner workings of mathematics than their

The back-to-school season is the ideal time of year to get vision checked. An out-of-date prescription can make focusing on the blackboard a challenge. Stay ahead of the class with the right pair of lenses. As for frames, these days there are more choices than ever when it comes to finding a pair that matches your style. To get an idea of what you like, check out online tools that offer sizing and style guides and let you upload your photo to envision what different frames will look like on your face. 6. Carry it all. Your backpack or satchel is will you all day, every day, so let it display your personal style. But be sure to select a bag that’s not only big enough to carry all your books, binders and supplies, but one that’s also ergonomic. The right choice will distribute weight in a way that helps avoid shoulder, neck and back strain. Another factor to keep in mind is water-resistance and its ability to protect laptops and other tech gear. After selecting a bag, consider personalizing it with patches, pins or whatever speaks to you. StatePoint
How New Technologies Will Support STEAM Learning this School Year predecessors, thanks to new graphing calculators, such as the fx-CG50 PRIZM and fx-CG500, which offer expanded features, including the ability to easily draw three dimensional graphs such as planes, cylinders and spheres, and view them from various angles to better analyze their shapes. A cross-section option and special zoom function allow students to closely examine graphs for in-depth analysis and an improved catalog function means students can use commands more easily and quickly. As rapidly emerging technologies innovate education, it’s an exciting time to be a student or teacher. StatePoint
Arizona Teachers Continue Fight After Losing Chance at Ballot Initiative
By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX — Teachers nationwide are wearing red today in support of public education. Here in Arizona, educators are vowing to continue to fight for better schools in the state, despite an education funding initiative that was blocked from ballots. The state Supreme Court last week removed an initiative from Arizona ballots that would have raised an estimated $690 million for schools through a tax increase on the wealthiest 1 percent of Arizonans. Joshua Buckley is a high school teacher and chaired the committee backing the ballot measure. www.desertstarweekly.com
“Invest in Ed was taken off the ballot, but what wasn’t taken off the ballot is the needs of all of our students,” Buckley said. “We are still $700 million short of 2008 funding levels, we still have students in classrooms with outdated textbooks, and we still have classrooms without a highly qualified teacher in them.” The Invest in Ed proposition qualified for November ballots with more than 270,000 petition signatures. Polling from the group FM3 Research suggested the proposition would have had support among nearly two-thirds of Arizona voters. But the Arizona Chamber of
Commerce and Industry sued to block the measure, saying it would hurt the state’s economy. And the State Supreme Court found the petition did not make clear that the proposition would have changed the state’s system for indexing tax brackets to adjust for inflation. Buckley said with the initiative off the ballots, education supporters will instead focus their energies on candidates in state and local races. “I think education is a number-one issue in this election,” he said. “So we’re paying attention, and we’re going to get out there September 5, 2018
and vote and help people get elected who want to help public education.” After a statewide teacher walkout last spring, the state Legislature agreed to give Arizona teachers a 20 percent pay raise over three years.
But educators say much more classroom funding is still needed. According to the National Education Association, Arizona’s perstudent spending is among the lowest in the nation.

Deadline Looms to Pass Bill on Controversial CA Water Project
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Conservation advocates say it’s now or never to protect the aquifer underneath the Mojave
Trails National Monument in the southern California desert. The state legislative session ends Friday, so supporters are urging
state lawmakers to pass Senate Bill 120. It would require the controversial Cadiz Water Project to undergo
state review, even as the Trump administration has moved to fast track it. David Lamfrom, California desert and wildlife program director for the National Parks Conservation Association, says the plan to transfer desert water to seven southern California cities is flawed. “New science indicates that this project would drain 16 billion gallons of water per year from an ancient aquifer, which feeds desert springs – which are critical for native culture, for wildlife in the region and for our national parks and our national monuments.” The Trump administration has decided a federal review is unnecessary for the Cadiz project, and the developer maintains it would not harm the aquifer and would create jobs. The ash may contain many toxic substances, including arsenic, asbestos, lead and fine particles that can aggravate asthma and other respiratory problems. “It’s important to limit the amount of ash that gets
airborne. Leaf blowers and sweeping may seem like a smart way to clean up, but doing so can stir up ash and people may breathe it in, which is dangerous,” said Dr. Karen Smith, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer. “It’s also important to avoid skin contact with ash because of the chemicals and toxins it may contain.” Symptoms that may be
related to exposure to ash or soot include itchy eyes, coughing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness or pain, palpitations, headaches and nausea, unusual fatigue or lightheadedness. CDPH recommends these tips for safely cleaning up ash: • Never use a leaf blower, as it will spread the ash and blow it back into the air.
• Wear a close-fitting respirator rated N-95 or P-100 to block ash particles from being inhaled. Bandanas, surgical or cloth masks do not effectively block fine particles. • Wear protective gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes to avoid skin contact with ash. • Remove shoes before entering your home or use “sticky mats” in entryways to

Report: Indiana Workers Fall Behind Midwest Neighbors
By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – At the turn of the century, Indiana ranked average or better than the Midwest as a whole in terms of family incomes, poverty, employment rates, union coverage, and other key indicators of stability. But according to a new report from the Indiana Institute for Working Families, Indiana now has the highest rate of povertywage jobs and low-income working families in the region. Andrew Bradley, senior policy analyst with the institute, says the state’s own estimates show seven in ten jobs are projected to be in low-wage
occupations by the year 2026. “Since the beginning of the 21st century, we’ve seen a higher and higher percentage of Indiana’s jobs are in lowwage occupations, meaning they don’t provide enough to pay for the basics for a family of three,” says Bradley. Bradley notes the declines began as policies were enacted that limited workers’ ability to organize, including taking collective bargaining rights away from public-sector employees in 2005 and the passage of so-called “right to work” laws in 2012. Proponents of those policies say they make the state more business-friendly, and
argue that low-wage concerns are overblown due to the state’s relatively low cost of living. Bradley agrees being business-friendly is important, but says Indiana needs to do so in ways that also are familyfriendly. He notes the state has given corporations more than $8 billion in economic development deals since 2000, but wages for the bottom half of Indiana’s workforce
have declined in that time. Bradley adds basic costs for working families, such as housing and childcare, have increased five times as fast as incomes since 2009. “So what we need to do in the future is we need to have a strong, stable and highly skilled workforce that’s able to compete for the jobs, and also rewards those employees in such a way that it boosts the
entire economy,” says Bradley. To help working families, the report recommends Indiana strengthen safety-net benefits and expand access to childcare, transportation, affordable housing, and broadband internet. It also suggests raising the state’s minimum wage, and allowing workers to earn paid sick days, and family and medical leave.

It’s Easy to Eat Green in California By Desert Star Staff California has long been at the forefront of environmental issues, from passing legislation to limit auto emissions to limiting the use of plastic bags. So it’s no wonder this environmental consciousness extends to the state’s renowned dining scene, where ethical dining has evolved from hippie-era health-food spots like 1970s celebrity favorite, The Source, to encompass now-standard practices of using pesticidefree ingredients, composting and recycling. In California, a delicious, memorable meal does not require diners to check their principles at the door, with a vast number of restaurants serving green and vegan fare that treads lightly on Mother Earth. Green Restaurants in California Environmentally and socially responsible dining is common throughout the Golden State, with restaurants proudly serving locally grown, organic produce; sustainably sourced fish; and hormoneand antibiotic-free meats and poultry. The flagship for the locavore movement is undoubtedly culinary superstar Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse in Berkeley. Opened in 1971, it’s where California cuisine was practically invented. In the Napa Valley, The French Laundry has taken Waters’ concept of direct relationships with farms a step further, establishing its own dedicated 3-acre garden where it grows dozens of products for use in the Michelin threestar restaurant’s kitchen. From Napizza in San
Diego, with its drug-free animal products to Providence in Los Angeles, boasting two Michelin stars and a dedication to sustainable seafood; from Monterey’s Montrio Bistro with a commitment to recycling and near-zero waste operation to Bar Agricole in San Francisco where local, organic ingredients pair with natural wines and some of the city’s best cocktails, eco-gourmet experiences are plentiful. You’ll find them at attractions like the California Academy of Science, the natural history museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which gets products for its dining operations from within a 250-mile radius. You will even find green options in rural parts of the state like Sequoia National Park, where The Peaks Restaurant serves sustainable fare with glutenfree and vegan options to go along with the epic views. Seafood can be an especially tricky thing to navigate — is your main course a threatened species? Is wildcaught better than farm-raised? Thanks to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, it’s easy to find the answer. The acclaimed facility’s Seafood Watch website (Seafoodwatch.org) and app allow you to plug in the name of your fish and give you the info you need to make the right decision in real time. The Green Restaurant Association website (Dinegreen.com) also makes it simple to find an environmentally responsible eatery. Vegan Restaurants in California Healthy living activist and UC Berkeley professor Michael Pollan famously
summarized how to approach dining: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” And a plant-based diet is not only good for your body, it’s good for the planet, mitigating the harmful effects of industrial meat and poultry production. So whether a traveler eats vegan out of concern for the welfare of animals, as a healthy lifestyle choice, or simply as a light option to a heavy meal, California has a multitude of vegan eateries to explore. Southern California: Vegan diners are grateful for the organic, plant-based food at Café Gratitude. This minichain has locations in Los Angeles, Venice Beach, Newport Beach, Beverly Hills and San Diego. Celebrity chef and educator Matthew Kenney oversees an empire that includes Plant Food + Wine and New Deli in Venice, and Make Out in Culver City, fusing contemporary design and vegan cuisine. In San Diego, one of the hottest restaurants of any stripe is Kindred, featuring quirky décor and killer cocktails. Evolution Fast Food is a next-gen drivethrough near Balboa Park, offering an all vegan/raw menu. Central California: Matthew Kenney strikes again with upscale Oliver’s in Montecito, while in San Luis Obispo Bliss Cafe is a creekside retreat with a plant-based, gluten-free menu and locally brewed kombucha on tap. Also in SLO CAL is New Earth Superfoods, serving an array of raw and heated vegan food including pizza and burgers, as well as vegan probiotic coconut yogurts and probiotic cheeses. Refresh Your Space 5 steps to simplify your next paint project By Desert Star Staff A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest ways to upgrade your home. Whether you’re revamping a main living area or freshening up your home’s curb appeal, some planning and preparation, plus the right painting tools, go a long way toward helping you achieve a professionallooking finished project. Execute your paint project flawlessly with these tips and tricks from Jennie Kitchen, product manager, Valspar Applicators at The Sherwin-Williams Company, Consumer Brands Group: Step 1: Choose Your Color: Selecting a color can often be the most difficult part of a paint project. While browsing through all the colors can be overwhelming, a resource like AskVal.com offers a variety of tools to help you select the perfect shade. delivered to your home for free, allowing you to see how they look in your space. Step 2: Pick Your Tools: Every paint project is unique and may require different tools depending on the size of your space and type of paint you choose. However, there are a few must-haves for nearly every project such as brushes, rollers, roller frames, an extension pole, a paint tray with liner and rags. “The quality of your paint rollers and brushes is just as important as the paint you use,” Kitchen said. “For a smooth finish and easy application, I recommend Valspar’s line of applicators and accessories, which are now available at Lowe’s and work well with all paints and stains. Our quality painting tools make it easy for DIYers to bring their projects to life.” Step 3: Prep Your Space: Start by removing all of the
furniture or pushing everything to the center of the room and covering it with a drop cloth or plastic sheet. Remove outlet and switch covers, and clean dirt, dust or grime from the walls using a microfiber duster or vacuum attachment. Don’t forget to lay drop cloths, tape off trim and fill in any small cracks or holes. Step 4: Apply Your Paint: Start at the top, beginning with the ceiling, and work your way down to the walls and trim. A tool like Valspar’s Wall and Trim brush is ideal for most interior painting projects. Its thin, tapered design provides ultra-clean lines when cutting-in around windows, door frames and molding. When you’re ready to roll, start at a corner of the room in a 2-by-4-foot section at the top of the wall. Then roll downward into a narrow V shape, filling in any unpainted areas as you go. And in Fresno, Loving Hut is part of an international chain that stretches from Indonesia to Vietnam that aspires to spread plant-based cuisine, sustainable practices and world peace around the globe. Northern California: Oakland has become a hotbed of vegan dining, featuring spots like Millennium, which has been blending international flavors from sustainable, locally sourced ingredients since 1994; Souley Vegan, with its plant-based take on Southern soul food; civic-minded Core Kitchen, offering a produceonly menu and hiring formerly incarcerated people; festive Hella Vegan Eats with its beer garden and brunches; and Vegan Donut Gelato where conscious diners can satisfy their sweet tooth. In Berkeley, The Butcher’s Son is a 100 percent vegan deli serving up tasty sandwiches, while fans of international cuisine can sample Mexican-inspired fare at Gracias Madre or Japanese eats at Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar & Izakaya, both located in San Francisco’s Mission District. (Gracias Madre also has an outpost in West Hollywood.) In Mendocino, vegans and the vegan-curious can stay in luxury at the Stanford Inn by the Sea, billed as North America’s only sustainable eco-resort, where all meals are locally sourced and vegan; there’s even a vegan cooking package available, allowing guests to learn how to prepare plant-based food.

For a seamless finish, it’s important to always keep a wet edge and let the weight of the loaded roller do the work. Some pressure can be applied as the roller cover starts to run out of paint, but if you hear a “sizzling” sound, that means it’s time to reload with more paint. To finish, use the roller and roll straight down all the way across your walls. Step 5: Clean Up Your Mess: Remove tape while the paint is drying to avoid paint peeling, remove drop cloths and then rearrange furniture. Between paint projects, always clean brushes with soap and water, but don’t leave brushes soaking in water. Always save the package, known as the keeper, to help the brush retain its shape. HOROSCOPES ARIES
Everything concerning daily life is evaluated. Observe your life, environments and all that is around you assessing in what ways you want to change in response to them and their needs. You realize you must do things differently from now on, considering what and how and the results. Careful at and work when communicating with coworkers. You may sound harsher than usual. Observe health, diet, fitness, exercise and how you feel each day.
TAURUS Interesting situations and communication may occur with lovers, children, and your own creative identification. Unresolved issues in relationships will reappear seeking a more harmonious conclusion. Remember to listen to the core message in all communications. Don’t defend. Pay attention carefully, instead. The unresolved issues must be dealt with or there will be a dissolving and dissolution of important things sometime in the future. Love and listening are everything.
GEMINI Everything about home, family, mother, real estate, things domestic come into focus needing careful perspective. Make no important decisions unless an emergency occurs. Everyone around you is experiencing the same present astrological transits, only everyone’s

CANCER Cancer, like a crab, circles a situation, moving to the center from every direction. The crab, wary of their prey, never walk in a straight line. Cancer therefore has a very developed intuition. In the next month that intuition may be even more illumined, filled with impressions and visions & information needing to be shared. Take care with communication. Something from the past is remembered. Or perhaps you’re traveling planning to a place you called home. Forgetfulness is good sometimes.
LEO How is your financial situation? Do not create any great waves in your financial picture. No loans (given or applied for) so there is no undue stress. Bring order and organization to finances, create new budgets, assess the flow of money (what’s coming in, what’s going out), the hows and whys of these transactions, reviewing if everything you prepared for is proceeding as planned. Include a review of your values. And tithe.
VIRGO Are you feeling somewhat veiled, quiet, behind the scenes, unable to convey
feelings? At this this time you are very internally involved, your mind assessing spirituality and religion, memories from the past, what you learned and what you sacrificed. Your choices are clearly perceived and then reviewed to see if they still reflect your values and needs. Prayer at this time is helpful. It opens the heart.
LIBRA Be aware of thoughts and issues and things not tended to for a long time, coming into your present life, seeking the needed attention. Know that as a harmonizer you are always heard and seen by others. Be very clear when communicating, speak slowly, informing people exactly what your intentions are. Be non-judgmental, call forth compassion and patience. A quiet mindful retreat sustains you. Form a group of like-minded others to read, bead, crochet, paint, garden and/or bake together.
SCORPIO Be aware that friends and groups are helpful for you to further define yourself. Have plans recently been delayed, changed or didn’t happen at all? Have those close to you been distant, internal or confused. Have thoughts, ideas and friends from the past made contact and have you considered re-entering a group or friendships from long ago? Allow no heartache or anguish from the past to continue. Your foundation

By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A 50-year-old conservation program that will expire at the end of this month without action from Congress is the focus of a new film released by the Hispanic Access Foundation. The film, “Land, Water, y Comunidad,” explores the importance of the Land and Water Conservation Fund to Latinos across the country, including in Las Cruces. Estefany Gonzales Mendoza, coordinator of Juntos: Our Air, Our Water, says Latinos have a strong connection with sites funded by the LWCF, as places for communities to connect. “It’s not just about maintaining our connectedness to Mother Earth, but it is also about maintaining cultures, traditions and family connectedness, because we know that our families celebrate so many things at the park,” she states. LWCF funding helped conserve the Santa Fe National Forest and Watershed, a National Park Service Latino Heritage site that is significant for its history as the home to Hispano settlers and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The program is not funded by individual taxpayers but rather, from a small portion of federal royalties from offshore drilling. Recently, LWCF helped establish the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge with
outdoor and educational opportunities for Bernalillo and Valencia counties. Jennifer Brandt, deputy director of conservation programs for the Hispanic Access Foundation, says if the program is allowed to expire, parks might not have sufficient personnel or resources for maintenance and improvements, and some may even have to close. “So, without that funding, it would be a detriment to so many communities who have received this funding in the past but wouldn’t be eligible for the funds that maintain these sites, and to help make sure that there are parks in every community, so that everyone has that access,” she points out. New Mexico has received more than $300 million from the program over the past five decades, and Mendoza says generations of Latino families in the state have benefited from these sites. “And we know our communities are already disproportionately impacted by environmental racism, which if Congress weren’t to authorize funding for the Land and Water Conversation Fund, then we know that that would add more stress and it would impact our communities,” she states. Nationwide, the Land and Water Conservation Fund has supported more than 41,000 parks and projects since the 1960s.

Cindy McCain kisses husband’s casket at Arizona service
News Staff The late Sen. John McCain’s wife, Cindy, walked up to the flag-draped casket holding her husband’s body Wednesday at the Arizona Capitol and patted it, then leaned over and kissed it. The rest of his children then filed past the casket and touched it, including his sons in uniform and daughter Meghan McCain, who was weeping. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and his wife bowed and McCain’s former colleagues, Sen. Jeff Flake
and former Sen. Jon Kyl, both touched the casket. Earlier, a black hearse carrying the casket arrived at Arizona’s Capitol for the first of two services before he is taken for the last time from the state he has represented since the 1980s. Uniformed Arizona National Guard members carried the casket into the Arizona State Capitol Museum rotunda, where McCain will lie in state after a private morning service on what would have been his 82nd birthday. McCain died
Saturday of brain cancer. Black curtains hung in the rotunda at the museum that hosts tourists and history buffs on a typical day as well state capitol workers bustling from one office to another. Arizona and U.S. flags encircled the room. Before the ceremony started, veterans and active military members had staked out spots on the sidewalk to wait for the hearse that brought McCain’s body from a funeral home to the Capitol. Other military members
in uniform congregated on the Capitol plaza. Veteran Judith Hatch handed out flags to those assembled, saying Arizona lost a champion for the military. “We definitely have lost a strong advocate, so we’ll need someone who is going to step up to the plate,” Hatch said. The ceremony will include remarks from Ducey and former U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, plus a benediction from Sen. Jeff Flake. It will also mark the first appearance of McCain’s family members since the senator died. Later in the afternoon, the Capitol will be open to members of the public who want to pay their respects. The viewing will go on as long as people are waiting in line, Rick Davis, said McCain’s former presidential campaign manager. For some Arizona residents, McCain has been a political fixture in the state for their entire lives. He took office in the state in the early 1980s, first as a congressman and then as a senator in the seat once held by Sen. Barry Goldwater. McCain is the third person to lie in state in the rotunda in
the past 40 years; others were Arizona state Sen. Marilyn Jarrett in 2006 and Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens, a Tucson resident, in 1980. Thursday morning will feature a procession through Phoenix on the way to a memorial service at North Phoenix Baptist Church, with the public invited to line the route along Interstate 17. The memorial service will include multiple tributes, readings and musical performances, including a tribute from former Vice President Joe Biden. Musical choices include a performance of “Amazing Grace” by the Brophy Student Ensemble and a recessional to “My Way” by Frank Sinatra. From there, McCain will depart Arizona from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Another viewing will be at the U.S. Capitol on Friday, with a final memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral. A website laying out details for the services says to send any flowers to a local Veterans Administration hospital.

Colin Blunstone reflects on The Zombies enduring legacy
Groundbreaking British Invasion troupe The Zombies are coming to Southern California to perform a string of dates this month including an appearance at the KAABOO Festival at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Sept. 14, an opening slot for Arcade Fire at the Greek Theatre on Sept. 20, and an intimate acoustic performance at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs on Sept. 21, 2018. Formed in England in 1961, the Zombies scored some of the most beloved and original hits of the 1960s including “She’s Not There,” “Tell Her No” and “Time of the Season.” The band’s final album of that decade – 1968’s brilliant “Odessey and Oracle” – is ranked 100 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The Zombies’ run appeared to be over when quintet dissolved following the release of “Odyssey and Oracle” if not for a small series of reunion shows staged in 1999. “We enjoyed it so much that we just kept going,” said lead singer Colin Blunstone in a recent telephone interview. “And here we are; originally six concerts and it’s nearly 20 years that we have been playing. It amazes me how much in life is just chance. We got together for those
six concerts really by chance and it has led to a 20-year adventure on the road. And so what more could you ask for. You go off around the world touring with your pals and playing the music you love. That wouldn’t have happened without those six dates.” In addition to Blunstone (lead vocals) and Rod Argent (keyboards, backing vocals), the Zombies’ line-up also includes long-time members Steve Rodford (drums), Tom Toomey (lead guitar) along with newcomer Søren Koch on bass guitar (who replaced bassist Jim Rodford, who died in a tragic fall in January 2017). Since reforming in 1999, the Zombies have released a trio of wonderful new albums – including this decade’s “Breathe Out, Breathe In” (2011) and the Billboard-charting release “Still Got That Hunger” (2015). The good news for fans is there are early plans to release a seventh studio album of new material. “We’re just talking about songs now. We’re touring now pretty solidly through Christmas, so there’s not going to be a lot of chance to record (in 2018),” Blunstone explained. “But what we can do on the road is to is rehearse new tunes and set arrangements and keys and things like that for new songs. So I would hope early next year we will start
recording. But for us, because we are a touring band it’s quite difficult to get everyone into the studio to record. As soon as there is a gap, I’m sure we’ll be back in the studio.” Anyone who has heard the Zombies or seen the band live knows how special Blunstone’s voice is; armed with a distinctive and highreaching tenor, it is as powerful as ever. The collective power of Blunstone and his bandmates makes the performances unforgettable. The Zombies influence has continued to grow with the late Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Beck, Paul Weller, Belle and Sebastian, a collaboration between Daryl Hall and Company of Thieves (on an episode of “Live
from Daryl’s House”), Jason Falkner and Santana having covered the band’s songs in the studio or on stage. The performance of tracks from “Odessey and Oracle” is always a highlight at the Zombies’ concerts. “To me, I’ve got to be honest, there is an air of mystery about it because I can’t equate the fact that it was fairly ignored when it was released (in April 1968),” Blunstone said of the band’s 12-track masterwork. “I can’t quite work out how it can be so revered now when it was so ignored at the time. It’s a strange concept, so it is a bit of a mystery. But it’s a wonderful mystery. And its been really, really exciting that its been acknowledged after all this time as a fine piece of work. Of course it’s fantastic that it is held in such high esteem now. It just intrigues me how it slipped through the net when it first came out. I’m not saying that in any bitter sense; I’m just saying I just don’t understand it but it’s fantastic that it has the acknowledgement that it has now.” The Zombies’ wealth of masterful songs and their top-tier talents as singers and virtuoso players are only a part of what make their concerts so special.
“I think we play because we love to play, and the thrill is definitely still there playing live. We love it. I think where it does get a bit more challenging is in the traveling. It’s tough for anyone to travel in the way a band travels, the distances you know. But as you get older it gets more challenging really. So that side of it can be a bit tough; but we go on remote control, automatic pilot and get that side sorted.” The Zombies’ will wrap up their upcoming U.S. tour with a special acoustic performance in Palm Springs. “It’s just Rod and I doing an acoustic show,” Blunstone said of that final date in the Coachella Valley. “We might talk more when there is two of us ...(it’s) more intimate and they’ll be more stories, and slightly different songs as well.” The Zombies’ acoustic performance at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club will feature an intimate performance featuring Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent, as well as an interview with Joe Wong of The Trap Set podcast. The event will be held at 8 p.m. on Sept. 21, 2018 at the Ace Hotel, 701 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs. Information: www. TheZombiesMusic. com/tour-dates.

“Tea With Dames” – A Delightful Documentary on Four Iconic British Actresses

Can you imagine joining screen, stage, and TV legends Dames Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, and Maggie Smith for an intimate tea party? Would you like to hear them talk about their most interesting personal and professional lives and share secrets about their experiences? Well, imagine no more as director Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Venus, Le Week-End, and My Cousin Rachel) has created the enchanting “Tea With Dames” in which these multi-award winning legendary performers sit around a table at Joan Plowright’s beautiful country cottage that she shared with her late husband Sir Laurence Olivier and reveal intimate stories about their adventures as young ingénues. These are clearly adoring colleagues whose relationships span decades. Between these gifted actresses, they have earned a massive amount of Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, and BAFTA awards. One of the most endearing moments is a montage of each of these talented women receiving their Damehood honor from Prince Philip or Queen Elizabeth II. This exquisitely shot film by Director of Photography Eben Bolter, begins with the Dames practicing vocal warmups such as “mi, mi, mi” or “Peter Piper Pecked A Peck of Pickled Peppers” and soon they settle in for a gossip fest, each of them comically retelling highlights, as well as lowlights, of their respective careers. Their conversation is unscripted and occasionally slips into being comically irreverent. Inner most thoughts and secrets are revealed such as Dame Atkins passing on playing Cleopatra because she felt she wasn’t pretty enough. An archival clip comes up of a young Dame Judi Dench playing that part. Vintage footage is shown throughout the film including scenes from
Illustrating her wonderful sense of humor, and perhaps a bit of insecurity, she replied, “It will never happen again.” With clips from “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and “Private Lives,” Dame Smith shares that when she worked with Olivier, “I was more nervous around him than the critics.” With her signature dry sense of humor, she also tells the story of how during the filming of “Harry Potter” she had to give reaction shots and comically demonstrated the different poses she assumed. There is another clip of a rehearsal from “Gosford Park.” “God forbid you should make a mistake, everyone would just stare at you.” Her parents didn’t approve of her going to the cinema but she revealed that her neighbor took her to see her first film, “The Jazz Singer” starring Larry Parks, a clip of which is shown. Perhaps the only sad note is that Dame Plowright’s sight is failing, but despite that challenge, she is as bubbly, charming, and as effervescent as ever. Possessing a keen sense of humor she quips, “I put

Dame Dench’s performances in “Roots,” “School for Scandal,” and “Romeo & Juliet.” She also remembered that when she played Cecily in “The Importance of Being Ernest,” “I kept forgetting my lines.” There are also clips of her playing different queens including, “Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown” contrasted by her role as “M” in “Skyfall,” and Franco Zeffirelli’s “Tea With Mussolini,” co-starring Plowright, Dench, and Smith. The story is about English expatriates living in Italy at the beginning of World War II. Dame Dench recalls, “After a day of shooting, we would drink a whole bottle of Procecco and then try to find our hotel rooms.” Dame Atkins, whose mother wanted her to be a dancer, remembers when she worked with Olivier in “Othello,” she put his eyelashes on for him every night. Playing Desdemona, she recalled that during one performance he slapped her so hard that it left a black handprint on her face. There is also an amusing clip of her doing a table read for “The Duchess of Malfi.” At the end, the director said, “Well done.”

anyone told you how old we are?” Another question from the off-camera director was, “What would your older self tell your younger self today?” Dame Plowright: “Get in touch with yourself at a young age and don’t wait until you’re older like I did.” Dame Smith: “When in doubt, don’t!” Dame Dench: “Try not to be so susceptible to falling in love.” Dame Atkins: “Don’t be so bad tempered and confrontational, and listen more.” At last these fabulous women are given a glass of champagne and toast each other with love and deep affection but in fact, we should be toasting them for the enormous contribution they’ve made to their profession. The toast should also include the sensitive, creative hand of director Michell, whose “Tea With Dames” is a beautiful thank you note to these ladies and a gift to us. At the end of this captivating film, we hear Dame Dench’s voice reciting from Shakespeare’s “The Tempest:” “We are such stuff as dreams are made on…” and indeed these amazing women collectively embody that famous quote.

ACLU Report Card: Civil Rights, Liberties Under Fire in NC By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – While thousands of Americans enjoyed a day off from work Monday for Labor Day, it’s the work done by North Carolina’s General Assembly in the last legislative sessions that has civil rights activists concerned. Specifically, the ACLU of North Carolina gives the Tar Heel State low marks for pushing forward legislation
that included limits to voting access, LGBTQ equality, privacy rights and more. “The ACLU of North Carolina has found that the North Carolina General Assembly continues to attack the civil rights and civil liberties of all North Carolinians, from privacy and voting access to LGBT equality and immigrant rights,” points out Sarah Gillooly, director of political
strategy and advocacy for the ACLU of North Carolina. “All of our rights are under attack in the General Assembly.” The report highlights six pieces of legislation, five of which were opposed by the ACLU. While the Voter ID Amendment and Act limiting access to early voting have received much attention, one other lesser known new law
By Desert Star Staff Dave Matthews Band will perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Wednesday, September 5. The appearance comes on the heels of the band’s three-night, Labor Day weekend run at Gorge Amphitheatre in George, WA. Fans around the globe were able to see Saturday’s sold-out show via a free live stream. The band’s46-date North American headline tour wraps up with a trio of West Coast shows, including a sold-out concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA on September 10. The Washington Post described the band’s show in Bristow, VA as “surprisingly heavy. Double kick drums thudded. Baritone guitar and bass intertwined to generate a sludgy and hypnotic lowend rumble.” The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel hailed their Summerfest set as “spirited...
soulful.” The Cleveland Scene observed, “[fans at] Blossom Music Center were giddy with anticipation for Dave Matthews Band’s return - the annual heralding, indeed, of summer in Northeast Ohio... [the] setlist that touched on all corners of the Dave world, new and old, with a triumphant wave of energy in several serious stand-out moments.” The shows have featured a wide mixture of songs from throughout the band’s career, including material from Come Tomorrow (RCA Records). With its entrance atop the Billboard 200 in June, Dave Matthews Band became the first group in history to have seven consecutive studio albums debut at No. 1. Come Tomorrow also took the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart, logging the biggest sales week for a rock album in more than four years.
In a New York Times’ Critic’s Pick review, Jon Pareles observed, “willed optimism fills the songs on ‘Come Tomorrow,’ while cynicism and irony are nowhere within earshot... each song notes the fears and sorrows it’s determined to overcome.” Vulture welcomed the album as “a quieting moment in an already overstuffed and overwhelming year.” SPIN praised “the dramatic ‘Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)’, the playful ‘That Girl Is You’, and the slowburning ‘Again and Again.’” Rolling Stone said, “[Matthews gets] quiet, contemplative, and unusually sweet on songs both lush (‘Here On Out’) and spare (‘Black and Blue Bird’).” GRAMMY® Awardwinning Dave Matthews Band has sold more than 20 million tickets since its inception and a collective 38 million CDs and DVDs combined.
allows law enforcement to access your entire history of drug prescriptions if you’re under investigation. Gillooly says it’s important to note that civil rights are not a matter of red or blue. “These votes are not partisan issues,” she stresses. “When you look at the votes from both Republicans and Democrats, we see legislators attacking the civil rights and civil
liberties of all North Carolinians.” One law that does have the ACLU’s support is one that raises the age of juvenile jurisdiction so that 16- and 17-year-olds who are charged with minor felonies and misdemeanors are not charged as adults. North Carolina was the last state to adopt such a law.

Keep Pets Safe this Halloween
By Desert Star Staff Halloween isn’t just for humans; four-legged friends have plenty of opportunity to get in on the fun, too. However, it’s important to take some pet precautions that allow the whole family to enjoy the holiday safely, as the costumes and excitement can be overwhelming and some of the candy is even dangerous. As you’re filling the candy buckets and assembling the perfect costumes, be sure to heed these tips from the experts at PetSmart for a Halloween filled with pet-friendly fun: Out and about: Make sure pets have proper identification by microchipping and registering your pet’s microchip, and keeping identification and registration tags on their collars. This is especially important around Halloween, when open doors offer more opportunity for escape. If your pet will be joining the family while trick-or-
treating, be sure they are visible to motorists by using a reflective collar, harness or leash. Costume concerns: Just like with children, there are safety issues to consider when costuming your pets. Not all dogs like wearing clothes and some may become stressed or agitated while wearing a costume or sweater. However, many dogs just need a little coaxing and positive reinforcement. • Start with a simple accessory, like a bandana, working your way up to a costume. • Make sure costumes include eye and ear holes, and if they don’t, consider removing whole portions of the costume to ensure your pet’s ability to see, hear and breathe. Make sure there isn’t anything that could be a tripping hazard. Also, be sure to check the costume for little parts within biting or chewing distance. • Dogs can overheat
easily, so ensure your dog’s clothing is not too bulky or heavy if the weather is warm. • In the end, the top priority should be your pet’s comfort level. Hazardous food and decorations: “It’s fun to include our pets in our celebrations, but it’s also important to be aware of the dangers associated with Halloween to ensure their safety,” said Jennifer Freeman, DVM, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert. “Keep chocolate and candy out of paws’ reach. Xylitol, a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, mints and baked goods, is toxic to pets and can cause liver damage.” Keep the Halloween fun going by establishing some rules for your family and any guests joining the festivities: • Xylitol can be extremely dangerous to pets, even in small amounts. Just 1/8 teaspoon can cause dangerously low blood sugar
LA QUINTA
in dogs and 1/2 teaspoon can cause liver damage. If xylitol is consumed by your pet, take him or her to a veterinarian immediately. • Natural stimulants in chocolate can cause a range of symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and abnormal heart rhythm. • Raisins may cause a toxic reaction in dogs from vomiting to kidney failure. • Cellophane, plastic and paper from candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can cause gastrointestinal upset. • As an alternative to sharing dangerous snacks, stock up on some seasonal dog-friendly treats and set out a pet-specific bowl. Seasonal decorations can also pose a threat: • Fall decorations like jack-o’-lanterns can cause gastrointestinal upset. • Glow sticks can cause irritation, agitation and vomiting. • Hot wax and flames from candles can potentially burn your pet’s nose, tongue or tail. Don’t forget the fun: Despite some concerns, Halloween can still provide fun moments for your pet: • Take your dog along for trick-or-treating. • Allow your fourlegged friend to greet trickor-treaters at the door. • Encourage friends to dress up their pets and join the festivities. How to Get Better Care from Your Doctor By Desert Star Staff Have you ever wanted to ask your doctor a question but didn’t because you felt uncomfortable? Experts say that an impersonal relationship with your doctor could be preventing you from receiving the best care possible. “Your doctors should feel like valued members of your family -- and you a part of theirs. That’s how I operate in my practice and what I aim to foster in my patients,” says Dr. Ken Redcross, who brings nearly 20 years of experience to his new book dealing with this subject, “Bond: The 4 Cornerstones of a Lasting and Caring Relationship with Your Doctor.” Whether you have a new doctor, or you’ve been at the same practice for years, your patient-doctor bond may be on faulty ground. But it doesn’t have to be, suggests Dr. Redcross. He

believes that by establishing these four essential qualities in your patient-doctor relationships, you’ll pave the way to receiving better care: • Trust. Trust is essential in any relationship, including the one with your doctor. There is no sharing without trust, and sharing is crucial when it comes to receiving the best possible care. • Communication. No relationship can be sustained without open and honest communication on both sides, but developing healthy communication habits takes practice, effort and willingness. • Respect. Respect is treating others with common courtesy, good social manners and appreciating each other’s humanity. This means respecting each other’s experience, knowledge and time. • Empathy. Empathy is the ability to sense another
person’s emotions and to be able to place yourself in his or her shoes, which is a valuable quality in a doctor. However, many physicians strive for a state of “concerned detachment,” which is the opposite of empathy. At the same time, patients can be more empathic, too, taking the time to consider everything their doctors may be dealing with on the day of their visit. Building a great relationship with your doctor leads to practical benefits, says Dr. Redcross. In dealings with his own patients, he finds that great communication paves the way for better treatment. “Recently, a patient of mine was dealing with muscle pain and we had a long conversation about different options. Initially, I recommended that she take traditional pain reliever with naproxen sodium every September 5, 2018
morning. However, by talking through all the options and what best fit her situation, including her overall medical history, preferences and more, we settled on using Arnica montana, a lower-risk plantbased pain reliever instead,” says Dr. Redcross. “Feeling comfortable enough with your doctor to challenge a suggestion and have a long and complete conversation is key. Unfortunately, such discussions between patients and doctors are rare.” To learn more about the book, as well as about building better relationships with your doctors, visit, BondByDrRedcross.com. At a time when doctor’s visits seem more routine and formulaic than ever before, experts say that receiving individualized care is possible, and it all starts with building strong relationships with your health care providers.

Ambitious Reinterpratation Production Of Richard III At La Jolla
Seize the King cast By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) Ambition supposedly killed Caesar according to Brutus. It also, however, became a twoedged sword that cut both way. Literature is bursting with characters who are infected with the ‘ambition’ virus who sometime beat the odds but usually die in the effort. Themes of love and death are intrinsically linked in literature Thank goodness for that ambitious personality quirk. It’s one of the core values of storytelling; that the arts illuminates and that life imitates or is it vice versa? Young award-winning Playwright Will Power (he’s 37), has made a bold decision to roll the dice of ‘reinterpretation’ with his brassy new play “Seize the King”, directed by Jaime Castaneda, now on stage of the La Jolla Playhouses’ Potiker Theatre. Aspiring young actors have for centuries been admonished: One does not improvise the dialogue of the Bard. But playwrights like Mr. Power believe that they are exempt from such strictures and of course they are. Youth is passionate, and youth must have its say be they actors or playwrights. Well, so much for theatrical traditions. The result of their passion and urgency, however, made “Hamilton” possible on Broadway and with audiences everywhere. It introduced hiphop singing and dancing to musicals as a new art form that reflected the changes occurring in American society. Diversity and artistic gender-bending casting in the last five years or so, is slowly being embraced by audiences everywhere. “The Tempest”, starring Kate Burton as Prospera, at The Old Globe this summer quickly comes to mind. In “Seize the King” for example, King Edward V, is played by an Asian-American female. “Seize the King”, is a reimagined “Richard III” production that is tasked with all of the character roles being performed by just five actors. That’s a big bite out of a Shakespearean dramatis personae cast list that can be www.desertstarweekly.com
fraught with disconnects to an audience that remembers the classic mounting of Shakespeare’s historical plays performed with traditional staging. All productions staged in the round, as is, “Seize the King”, run the risk of having at least one actor speaking with his or her back to the audience some of the time. It’s a thorny issue for all involved and is rarely resolved to suit everyone. In director Castaneda’s case he did his best to minimize any dialogue damage for the audience by his staging. Playwright Power’s newly envisioned story of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” in short, depicts the Machiavellian rise to power through murder, deceit, treachery, and betrayals by Richard, Duke of Gloucester; subsequently becoming Richard III; the last of the Plantagenet Kings. Most of the contemporaryinfluenced dialogue and anachronisms are delivered in standard American-English. However, some dialogue is delivered warts and all, in the vernacular of current American street language, which may be a little off-putting for some. One of the advantages and pleasures of classic Shakespearean traditional delivery, lies in its continuity and fluidity of its structure in iambic pentameter. Once on board with the rhythm of the speeches, audiences were transported to an Arden Forest or to a battle in Agincourt, France, or to a Danish castle without ever leaving their theatre seat. A talented cast of six protean actors tackle all the roles in this “Seize the King” production that is led by an intense, duplicitous, scheming, Jesse J. Perez, in a full blown energetic performance as the villainous Richard who must become a King. As Richard, Mr. Perez, not only breaks the fourth wall convention, he interacts with the audience from time to time, chatting about his actions in the play. It’s bold, but does it work? Perhaps, it’s a method of drawing the audience closer to the emotions of his character. But it’s a finely judged performance none-the-less. Making all the intrigue, backstabbing, and betrayals
work falls to the talents of the following: Luis Vega as Lord Hastings, Young Warwick and Greygor the Tailor. He has wonderful stage presence and piercing eye contact that commands our attention in his all scenes. Saidah Arrika Ekulona, as Queen Woodville, Gardner2, and Master of the Royal Wardrobe, is a formidable Royal Queen, who takes on Richard; making no friendship with him in the bargain. Julian Parker as Lord Buckingham, Gardner 1, and
a Royal servant, scores as a sympathetic Buckingham, who favors Henry Tudor as the future King of England, but never lives to see it happen. Parker has a quiet demeanor, amid all the clamor of war and castle intrigue of “Seize the King”. Jenapher Zheng, delivers two real shape-shifting performances: as a convincing young Edward V, Richard’s doomed nephew, and as grieving widow Anne Neville, who is being wooed by Richard, the man who killed her husband and her father. In the Greek or Roman theatre Richard would be wise to dine away from his intended and avoid drinking wine or the eating of the figs. Poison was the favored method of resolving troublesome issues back then. The lives of women then and right up to the 20th century have been ruled by men. Position and beauty may have been helpful in escaping the executioner’s axe in the Middle Ages, but life was tenuous at best. Those good old days were not so good for most. Will Power has been quoted as saying about his role as a playwright creating new paradigms, “Shakespeare
wrote for his time. Today, we write for our time.” Daring and confident words from a youngturk playwright, who has the chops to back up his challenge. In the technical department; the creative team led by director Castaneda has Scenic Designer Lauren Helpern reconfigure the Potiker stage from a proscenium format into a theatre-in-the-round acting space. The Lighting Designs of Tyler Micoleau, provide plenty of light for the costumes of Emilio Sosa to be fully appreciated. Sound Designer Mikhail Fiksel, provides the ear-splitting, propulsive, sound effects that punctuate, scene changing interludes. Enough cannot be said, however, about the brilliant riffs and finger technique of drummer Richard Sellers during some of those interludes. The audience loudly applauded following each of his ’performance moments’; deservedly so. “Seize the King” at the La Jolla Playhouse, is a world premiere presentation, that is performed without an intermission (95 minutes), and runs through September 16, 2018.
