New Duck-Billed Dinosaur By Desert Star Staff SAPPORO, Japan, The dinosaur, whose nearly complete skeleton was unearthed from 72 millionyear-old marine deposits in Mukawa Town in northern Japan, belongs to a new genus and species of a herbivorous hadrosaurid dinosaur, according to the study published in Scientific Reports. The scientists named the dinosaur Kamuysaurus japonicus. A partial tail of the

dinosaur was first discovered in the outer shelf deposits of the Upper Cretaceous Hakobuchi Formation in the Hobetsu district of Mukawa Town, Hokkaido, in 2013. Ensuing excavations found a nearly complete skeleton that is the most massive dinosaur skeleton ever found in Japan. It’s been known as “Mukawaryu,” nicknamed after the excavation site. Here’s what’s happening in California: Union officials representing cashiers, stockers, and clerks at Ralphs — owned by Kroger— and employees at Albertsons and its Vons and Pavilion chains have been negotiating new three-year contracts with the companies since their

contracts expired in March. California workers at more than 500 stores are demanding higher pay and a contract that protects their retirement and health benefits. Talks between the companies and union leaders representing more than 500 stores in the region are ongoing. But some Ralphs workers in recent weeks have started to protest outside local stores to raise pressure on the company. Next week, workers represented by the United

The research team also found that Kamuysaurus japonicus, or the deity of

Japanese dinosaurs, has three unique characteristics that are not shared by other dinosaurs in the Edmontosaurini clade: the low position of the cranial bone notch, the short ascending process of the jaw bone, and the anterior inclination of the neural spines of the sixth to twelfth dorsal vertebrae. According to the team’s histological study, the dinosaur was an adult aged 9 or older, measured 8 meters long and weighed 4 tons or 5.3 tons

(depending on whether it was walking on two or four legs respectively) when it was alive. The frontal bone, a part of its skull, has a big articular facet connecting to the nasal bone, suggesting the dinosaur may have had a crest. The crest, if it existed, is believed to resemble the thin, flat crest of Brachylophosaurus subadults, whose fossils have been unearthed in North America. Continues on Page 3

Chinese-American Author Speaks on the Inspiration Behind Her Novels

By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA – Author Iris Yang will speak on October 1 at 2:00 pm at Rancho Mirage Public Library about her two historical novels on the Flying Tigers (American Volunteer Group) and their contributions to China in WWII. Her novels, Wings of a Flying Tiger and Will of a Tiger, have received excellent reviews nationwide and have been featured in a dozen newspapers. Dr. Yang has been interviewed on National Public Radio (WUNC’s “The State of Things”). She has spoken to dozens of veteran’s groups, civic organizations, and libraries and has been invited to speak at the Flying Tigers WWII Veterans Reunion in San Diego September 25 to 29, 2019.

Iris was born and raised in China, where Americans were called “American Devils.” Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine writing books about American heroes. In fact, the writing was a dangerous career when books were being burned and her grandmother, the first Chinese woman to receive a Master’s degree in the U.K., was wrongfully accused of being a Counter-Revolutionary Rightist and fired from her university job. Dr. Yang had to choose a safer path—to study science. After graduating from Wuhan University, she was accepted by the prestigious CUSBEA (China-United States Biochemistry Examination and Application program). At age 23, with poor English, little knowledge of the country, and

500 borrowed dollars, she came to the United States as a graduate student at the University of Rochester, NY. She received a Ph.D. in molecular biology and moved to N.C. to manage a laboratory at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Although she published several scientific papers, Iris had a passion for creative writing, just like her grandmother, mother, and aunt. Her debut novel Wings of a Flying Tiger was published in June 2018, and its sequel Will of a Tiger was released on January 2019. She holds a private pilot September 6, 2019

license, and her admiration for fighter pilots was clearly conveyed in her books. “Both books are works of fiction,” Dr. Yang explains. “But to me, they are also personal. As a Chinese, I’m thankful for the Flying Tigers’ bravery and sacrifice; without their help, the course of Chinese history might have been changed, my family might not have survived, and I might not have existed. As a U.S. citizen, I’m honored to write a book about American heroes.” Her novels have touched many people’s hearts, including the son of a Flying Tiger who gave his father’s flight jacket to Iris.

About 485,000 workers were involved in major work stoppages last year, the highest number since 1986, according to the Labor Department. More workers are pressing their employers because of concerns about income inequality, wage stagnation, sexual harassment in the workplace, and automation. A California strike would be the second major work stoppage in the grocery industry this year. In April, 31,000 Stop & Shop workers at 240 stores in New England walked off their jobs for 10 days. Organizing workers in retail — an industry defined by high turnover rates and part-time employees — has been difficult for unions. “When you have a lot of part-time workers who don’t know their rights, who are kind of precarious workers worried that they might get laid off if they support a union, it’s hard,” said Greenhouse, the former labor reporter. Grocery workers are an exception, however. The majority of Kroger’s approximately 453,000 employees belong to unions, while 63% of Albertsons 267,000 workers are union members, according to filings. Supermarket workers, especially butchers, organized in the early and mid-20th century before the rise of big-box stores, according to labor experts. “Supermarkets came long before big-box general merchandise stores,” said Lichtenstein. “Retail trade unions were able to organize them when law, culture, politics, and managerial practices were more favorable to unions.” Grocery operators historically operate at low-profit margins, and grocers like Kroger and Albertsons face higher costs than non-union discount retailers. Grocers are also getting squeezed by the rise of low-cost union-free competitors such as Aldi and Dollar General. Union grocers “really feel tremendous pressure,” said Greenhouse. “They’re fighting to remain competitive while making their workers happy.” Developments in California may have ramifications for other grocery stores, too. Some 20,000 employees at Fred Meyer, Albertsons, and Safeway in Oregon and Washington represented by the United Food, and Commercial Workers recently voted to authorize a strike. California unions are emboldened by the Stop & Shop strike, high-profile teachers’ strikes around the country and the possibility of attracting Democratic candidates’ support, said Steven Greenhouse, a former labor reporter at The New York Times and the author of “Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present & Future of American Labor.” “Labor was fairly dead in the water three, four, five years ago. Then, boom, suddenly these huge teacher strikes in West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Arizona,” he said. “Successful strikes beget other strikes.” Union workers in grocery stores A grocery strike in California would be a rare work stoppage in retail. Only 4.5% of America’s retail workers belonged to a union in 2018, according to the Department of Labor. The rate is below the 6.4% union membership rate for private-sector workers. Walmart has more than 1.5 million US employees, and Target has 360,000 workers. None of them are unionized. Walmart, born in Arkansas during the 1960s, fought hard to prevent unions from organizing workers as it swept across America. “Big-box stores were predicated on being low paid, non-union, and hostile to unionized department stores,” said Nelson Lichtenstein, a labor historian at the University of California, Santa Barbara. “When they expanded into groceries, they kept their antiunion posture, made easy by shifts in law and politics in the late 20th century.”

Chanya Button’s “Vita & Virginia” - A Cinematic Gift to Movie-Going Audiences While I generally don’t begin a review citing production values, I’m compelled to send a love letter to Chanya Button both for the screenplay, co-written with Dame Eileen Atkins, and for her delicate, but commanding direction of this historic, fascinating true story. Servicing the script with the eye of a fine artist, Director of Photography Carlos de Carvalho, created a highly textured, moody look to the film with each meticulously shot scene a stand-along museum quality painting capturing the lifestyle and times of the bohemian high society of 1920s - the backdrop for the legendary story of two of the most successful 20th century writers – Vita SackvilleWest and Virginia Woolf. Socialite Vita played to perfection by Gemma Arterton, captures the essence of her character who is essentially a sexual predator flaunting dalliances with delight. Her mother, Lady Sackville, played with steely perfection by Isabella Rossellini, is disgusted by her behavior and informs her renegade daughter that if she publishes her latest book, all future funds will be cut off. Vita tries to defend herself saying that she dressed up as a man for research purposes, but her excuse falls on deaf ears, and at the risk of being cut-off, she stops the printing of the book. Vita’s husband, Harold Nicolson, well played by Rupert Penry-Jones, is a kind, considerate man who understands his wife’ sexuality and generally rescues Vita from her latest paramour. He is a diplomat and needs her to pretend that she is a devoted, loving wife, which she reluctantly does, while at the same time indulges her sexual desires with women. At a party, Vita sees the

enigmatic Virginia Woolf, played to perfection by Elizabeth Debicki, who mines the deepest recesses of her character’s psyche capturing her nuances and insecurities. She is dancing, and their eyes lock on each other. Virginia asks Vita why her books sell more than hers and Vita quips, “Popularity is never a sign of genius.” Immediately smitten with the elusive famous writer, Vita asks if she would go away with her, which Virginia initially declines. With her hooks set out to capture the elusive and seemingly troubled Virginia, they begin to exchange letters and in one scene in a greenhouse bursting with a profusion of vibrant, glorious colors, Vita gives her prey a pair of matching sunglasses. There could be a metaphor here, perhaps looking through the world through tinted glasses. Although the attraction is growing, Virginia resists the famous author’s advances and is always beset with the thought that something is wrong with her. Virginia’s devoted, most understanding husband Leonard Woolf, wonderfully played by Peter Ferdinando, who, despite knowing his wife is probably bisexual, is protective of her well being. Interestingly, each of these women has husbands who adore and protect them and when necessary, accept their attraction to the same sex. Overwhelmed with her infatuation with Vita, Virginia suffers a nervous breakdown. Her doctor thinks her writing is causing her problem, commenting, “Women can’t cope.” Vita tries to see Virginia, but the family does not allow it. She tells them she would like to take Virginia home with her to restore her health. At first, they refuse but subsequently agree to her proposal. In a beautifully crafted scene, they finally

Vita wants her newest paramour to leave her husband and run away with her, but Virginia says she can’t because “Leonard keeps me grounded, and I love him.” In an emotional, but a somehow transformative moment for Virginia, Vita arrives at a gallery opening arm in arm with Mary Campbell played by Thalia Heffernan. The shock of seeing them together drives this vulnerable writer to the edge of a river, and for a moment, it looked as though she was going to commit suicide. * But instead, Virginia uses Vita as her muse to create a new character who begins as a man and transforms into a woman or as she puts it, “The story of a hero who turns out to be a heroine.” The title of the book was “Orlando” which, like most of her books, is a literary success.** Writing the book was a cathartic experience, and as a result, the attraction to Vita takes on a different complexion. Vita & Virginia is director Button’s second film, the first one being BURN BURN BURN, which won multiple awards from film festivals around the world. Her

current film is a stunningly crafted period piece with a compelling narrative, lush costumes, bucolic settings, a talented cast, each of whom delivers a fully actualized performance, with all the components guided through her skillful direction. Let’s hope this gifted auteur has a third film in the works. According to their website, to identify the best 20 zoos, “24/7 looked at a total of 272 zoos, all of which were within the zoo category on Yelp or near the top 1,000 U.S. cities by population. Only zoos with at least 50 Yelp reviews were considered. The ranking is based on the average rating and number of reviews.” According to the USA

Today online article, The Living Desert tops the list of 20, which also includes Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Denver Zoo, and Santa Barbara Zoo, among others. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens also recently earned the Platinum GuideStar Nonprofit Profile Seal of Transparency, the highest level of recognition offered by GuideStar, the world’s largest source of nonprofit information who reports on over 2.5 million non-profit organizations.

Jerry West set to receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

nation’s highest civilian honor “for his outstanding career, both on and off the court.” The Presidential Medal of Freedom will add to the series of honors the 81-year old West has received, which also include a statue outside Staples Center, a bronze

plaque in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum’s Memorial Court of Honor, selection in 1996 as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in conjunction with the league’s 50th anniversary and election to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Born May 28, 1938, in Chelyan, West Virginia, West’s shooting and defensive skills made him a dominant player on the high school, college and professional levels. West became the first player in West Virginia history to score 900 points in a season as a senior at East Bank High School in East Bank, West Virginia, in the 1955-56 season, averaging 32.2 points per game and leading the Pioneers to the state championship. West was a two-time first-team All-American at his final two seasons at West Virginia University. He was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the 1959 NCAA men’s basketball tournament, when he led the tournament in scoring with 160 points, including a gamehigh 28 in the Mountaineers 71-70 loss to California in the championship game. West was selected by the Minneapolis Lakers with the second choice in the 1960 NBA draft, shortly before their move to Los Angeles. The sharpshooting 6-foot-3 guard nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” for his ability to make late gamewinning shots, played his entire 14-season NBA career for the Lakers, helping lead them to the NBA Finals nine times and the championship in the 1971- 72 season. “I played basketball because of my love of the game and enormous competitive desire to win,” West said at 2011 ceremony when his statue outside Staples Center was unveiled. “I played for the fans of Los Angeles, particularly for my teammates. I was driven by a fierce desire and determination.” “Every time I put on a Laker uniform, it filled me with immense pride and accomplishment. I was blessed to play in this great city for these great fans.” When West retired in 1974, he was the third-leading career scorer in NBA history, behind Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson, with

25,192 points in 932 games. West rejoined the Lakers organization in 1976, spending three seasons as their coach and the next three as a scout. West was appointed as the Lakers general manager before the 1982-83 season. His personnel moves and trades helped the team to NBA titles in 1984-85, 1987-88, 1988-89 and 1999-2000 seasons. His most memorable deals include the 1996 trade that brought Kobe Bryant to the Lakers. West left the Lakers in 2002 to become president of basketball operations with the Memphis Grizzlies. He was selected as NBA Executive of the Year in 2004 and retired in 2007. West was an executive board member with the Golden State Warriors for six seasons through 2017, then joined the Los Angeles Clippers as a consultant that year. West will be the eighth basketball figure to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom following Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, and Bob Cousy and coaches John Wooden, Pat Summitt, and Dean Smith. Dressed as the Statue of Liberty, the four members of ElderWitness, say they are outraged by the Trump administration’s detention of immigrant children and the separation of families. Rabbi Arthur Waskow, a member of ElderWitness, was among those arrested. “We’re horrified, and as elders we think it’s our responsibility to uphold the values that we grew up with as Americans and as human beings,” he stressed. In June 2018, a federal judge ordered the administration to end family separations, but the ACLU has

documented more than 900 such separations since then. Waskow said Wednesday’s demonstration built on a similar protest held two weeks ago that focused on seven children who have died in U.S. custody. “Today, what we did was recite the life stories of those seven children, plus we now have actual reports from children who have been in the camps and are still in the camps,” Waskow explained. teen use of e-cigarettes. Statistics show that from 2017 to 2018, e-cigarette use spiked 78% among high

school students and 48% among middle school children. Andrew Schepers, Michigan director of government relations for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, says vaping can be a gateway to cigarettes. “Studies have shown that folks that do use e-cigarettes have been known to use traditional tobacco products as well, and it can turn into a lifelong addiction,” he points out. Whitmer said candy or fruit flavored vape liquid is marketed specifically to children, so the state will forbid the use of terms such as “clean,” “safe” or “healthy” in vape ads, and step up enforcement of existing rules against vape ads on billboards. The Vapor Technology Association opposes the

move, saying it will spur a black market and hurt small businesses. Recently, there have been a spate of news reports of teens with severe lung damage linked to vaping. The Michigan Legislature passed bills in June to make it illegal to sell vaping products to minors. But Schepers faults lawmakers for not going further. “They had the opportunity to define these as tobacco, which would provide comprehensive protections for everyone,” he points out. “They failed to do that.” The ban takes effect in about a month and lasts for six months, at which point it can be renewed. The Food and Drug Administration. has ignored calls to regulate vaping products as it does tobacco.


Financial System makes Negative Spin on Annuities Common.

By Janice Gough Everyone is aware that mass media has changed drastically over the years. In the internet age, we seem to be bombarded with headlines, updates, and ”breaking news.” Media outlets have increased, and so has the “spin,” which makes it harder to find genuinely objective reporting. Journalist are under pressure to cut corners and put “pleasing their bosses” ahead of “pleasing the public.” Financial news is particularly susceptible to being “spun.” This is because no system is perfect. Wall Street must always spin their news on an optimistic side of reporting. The crux of the problem is that the heads of Financial firms on Wall Street owe an alliance with their shareholders first, and their customers and clients second. They have a legal obligation to maximize shareholder value while keeping investors invested in the market. Those working for these companies must always sell and speak optimism. In doing so, they also must sell and speak negatively about alternative, non-stock marketbased types of investments. There are three types of institutions vying for the investor’s money: 1.)the Brokerage houses and mutual funds, 2.)insurance companies and 3) banks. Due to lowinterest rates earned in saving vehicles and high-interest rates on loans, it is easy to put a negative “spin” on banks. That leaves brokerage houses and insurance cos. Thus, Wall street will stick with the Band who brought them, leaving all negative spin toward insurance companies and annuities. The truth is the many articles written about financial topics and publication and not

written by financial advisors or money experts, they are written by professional writers, and sometimes not so “professional.” But even if the writer is a real “pro,” he is likely to have one particular area of expertise. He may write one week for National Geographic and the next week for Sports Illustrated. Thus, he will need help and research on Financial products, so who does he call on for help? Usually, he will select one of the large advertisers in media. What he ends up with is the optimism Wall Street must support, and a negative “spin” on insured products. I think that it is essential for investors to understand how the “inherent flaw” in the system makes the prevalence of “spin,” especially common in Financial media. In the internet age, there is so much “spin”, rhetoric, and disguised

advertising, making it difficult to find the real news. My best advice is to find a trusted advisor, who will discuss the pros and cons of both an educate you on what
