Deadline Looms to Pass Bill on Controversial CA Water Project By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Conservation advocates say it’s now or never to protect the aquifer underneath the Mojave Trails National Monument in the southern California desert. The state legislative session ends Friday, so supporters are urging state lawmakers to pass Senate Bill 120. It would require the controversial Cadiz Water Project to undergo state review, even as the Trump administration has moved to fast track it. David Lamfrom, California desert and wildlife program director for the National Parks Conservation Association, says the plan to transfer desert
water to seven southern California cities is flawed. “New science indicates that this project would drain 16 billion gallons of water per year from an ancient aquifer, which feeds desert springs – which are critical for native culture, for wildlife in the region and for our national parks and our national monuments.” The Trump administration has decided a federal review is unnecessary for the Cadiz project, and the developer maintains it would not harm the aquifer and would create jobs. The State Assembly passed SB 120 on Wednesday. It now needs a vote in the full Senate. Conservation groups worry that animals, including the
Conservation groups fear that Bonanza Spring in the Mojave National Preserve could dry up, endangering wildlife, if the Cadiz Water Project goes forward. (Michael Gordon)
‘Frank Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely.’ By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, Sept. 7, 2018 - Frank Sinatra’s intimate 1958 opus, Frank Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely, has been newly mixed in stereo for an expanded 60th Anniversary Edition to be released worldwide on October 19 by Capitol/UMe and Frank Sinatra Enterprises. ‘Only The Lonely’ (60th Anniversary Edition) will be released in a Deluxe 2CD package, in 180-gram 2LP vinyl and 1CD configurations, and in two digital album versions. Starting tomorrow, “Angel Eyes” (2018 Stereo Mix) will be available for streaming and immediate download with digital album preorder. Preorder ‘Only The Lonely’ (60th Anniversary Edition): https://UMe.lnk.to/SinatraOTL ‘Only The Lonely’ (60th Anniversary Edition)’s 2CD Deluxe package pairs the album’s remastered original 1958 mono mix with a new 2018 stereo mix by Larry
Walsh. Four bonus tracks from the mono session recordings are also featured, including studio takes making their release debuts: “Angel Eyes” (alternate session takes – May 5, 1958) and “Lush Life” (session takes – May 29, 1958). The album’s original mono mix makes its digital release debut in an expanded digital collection pairing the remastered album mix with the four bonus session recordings, while the 1CD, 2LP vinyl, and standard digital album configurations feature the album’s 2018 stereo mix. Ron McMaster mastered the new edition’s audio at Capitol Studios. ‘Only The Lonely’ was recorded as both a mono and stereo presentation,” explains Larry Walsh in his notes for the 60th Anniversary Edition. “The mono was the focus as that was the chief format of the day. The stereo was recorded with two microphones suspended
high over the studio orchestra. Frank Sinatra’s voice was recorded onto a third track. With the stereo recording being mid-side decoded, the depth of the studio is revealed.” For ‘Only The Lonely,’ Sinatra recorded evening sessions at Capitol Studios in May and June 1958, joined by an orchestra and his frequent collaborator, conductor and arranger Nelson Riddle. Sinatra delves deeply into love, pain, and loss across the album’s songs of heartbreak and yearning, including “One For My Baby (And One More For The Road),” “Angel Eyes,”’ and “Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry.” ‘Only The Lonely’ reached No. 1 on Billboard’s albums chart and remained on the charts for 120 weeks. At 1959’s inaugural GRAMMY Awards® ceremony, the album won the award for Best Recording Package. “The ones that stick in my mind are ‘Only The Lonely,’
‘Wee Small Hours,’ and ‘Come Fly With Me,’ because I think the orchestrator’s work and my work came together so well.” – Frank Sinatra

Increasing numbers of grandparents are raising grandchildren, due to such factors as parents’ job losses and the opioid epidemic. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff September 7, 2018 – As the matriarchs and patriarchs,
grandparents have always played important roles in their families, and this weekend
Michiganders can spend special time celebrating those contributions.
By Desert Star Staff September 7, 2018 – Maine’s most active voters want political candidates to address their concerns about health care and retirement security, according to a new survey from AARP. Older Americans are more likely to go to the polls than younger voters, and the survey shows they will hold candidates in this year’s midterm election accountable on issues that matter to them and their families. According to Lori Parham, state director of AARP Maine,
at the top of older Americans’ list is preserving their ability to stay healthy and active. “Ensuring that there is adequate and affordable health care as well as lowering health care costs really is a key issue, not only for people 65 and older but for voters 50-plus as well,” she states. The survey shows 97 percent want Congress to take steps to ensure that Medicare can continue to cover hospital benefits beyond 2029. Of those surveyed, 90 percent said that financial security in retirement
is very important. Parham points out that one-third of Mainers over 65 on Social Security have no other source of income. “That’s just over $1,000 a month, and that just doesn’t get you very far to cover health care costs, heating costs, food and other housing needs,” she points out. The survey shows that two-thirds of older Mainers are worried that prices are rising faster than their income, and almost 40 percent fear that they won’t be able to afford to retire when they want.
AARP Michigan is hosting free Grandparents Day events in Detroit, Jackson and Lansing on Sunday. Associate State Director of Communications Mark Hornbeck explains grandparents deserve a special honor, as many are becoming a much bigger part of grandchildren’s’ lives than they were in the past. “A variety of factors out there are requiring that grandparents get more involved,” he states. “They’re taking on a family role that they didn’t expect to have to take on. Some do it gladly, some probably reluctantly.” An estimated 2.7 million grandparents in the U.S. are raising grandchildren, in part because of parents’ job losses or financial instability, as well as the opioid epidemic. Hornbeck says Sunday’s events are a way to honor the bond between grandparents
and grandchildren. Lansing’s event will be held at the Don Johnson Fieldhouse, where Hornbeck says more than 35 organizations are planning activities for the entire family. “Dance instruction and dance performance, balloonanimal making, street magic, tennis instruction, chalk art, learning about animals, oldfashioned games, martial arts classes, bounce houses, a carnival, photo booth and more,” he states. Similar activities are taking place at the Detroit celebration at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. And the Jackson Symphony Orchestra is hosting a musical afternoon, featuring a quartet performance and instruction on creating homemade musical instruments.
Parham adds that beginning this month AARP is holding voter engagement community conversations across the state. “Maine is the oldest state, and we need leadership around issues impacting older Mainers especially around being able to stay at home
and in the communities that they love,” she stresses. AARP does not endorse any candidates, but the organization will be co-sponsoring televised debates with the gubernatorial and U.S. Senate candidates in October and November.

1 in 4 Americans deleted Facebook By Desert Star Staff September 7, 2018 - After Facebook was accused of censorship and hammered by privacy scandals, a new study has found that one in four Americans has deleted the app from their phones. Among young people, this number is even higher. In the wake of multiple scandals, a new poll by Pew research has found that most Americans are curbing their Facebook usage. Pollsters surveyed over 4,500 US adults earlier this summer and found that 74 percent of users have taken some action to reduce their dependence on the social media giant. Some 54 percent have adjusted their privacy settings; 42 percent have taken a break from Facebook for several weeks or more; 26 percent have deleted the app from their phone entirely. The numbers are more striking, given that among users aged 18-29, almost half of the respondents (44 percent)
have deleted the app. The poll was published on Wednesday; the same day that Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg faced a Senate hearing over alleged election meddling from foreign agents on the platform, and over Facebook’s alleged bias against conservative content. Accusations that the company actively censors right-wing content have come from Republican lawmakers, and from Facebook staff themselves, particularly in the wake of the company’s decision to ban controversial figure Alex Jones from its platform last month, and its increased contentpolicing and anti-’fake news’ initiatives in the runup to the 2018 midterm elections. Perhaps more damaging to Facebook was the revelation in March that Cambridge Analytica, a British analytics firm, used a third-party quiz app to collect the personal data of some 87 million Facebook users, including
those who never used the app. Cambridge Analytica opened up a Pandora’s box of privacy scandals for the company, as it was revealed that Facebook allowed other companies to access private user data, including personal messages, for commercial purposes. The poll results may not quite spell disaster for Facebook yet as Instagram and WhatsApp remain popular and are both owned by Facebook. However, the fallout from the scandal still saw

Facebook’s profits plummet at one point, and saw the company scramble to introduce new privacy measures. It also saw its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, hauled before hearings at the House and the Senate in April. It also saw the #deletefacebook movement gain traction, as users tired of having their private lives packaged and sold to the highest bidder. On Twitter, many pointed to the #deletefacebook movement as shaping the poll results.

“Tea With Dames” – A Delightful Documentary on Four Iconic British Actresses

Can you imagine joining screen, stage, and TV legends Dames Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, and Maggie Smith for an intimate tea party? Would you like to hear them talk about their most interesting personal and professional lives and share secrets about their experiences? Well, imagine no more as director Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Venus, Le Week-End, and My Cousin Rachel) has created the enchanting “Tea With Dames” in which these multi-award winning legendary performers sit around a table at Joan Plowright’s beautiful country cottage that she shared with her late husband Sir Laurence Olivier and reveal intimate stories about their adventures as young ingénues. These are clearly adoring colleagues whose relationships span decades. Between these gifted actresses, they have earned a massive amount of Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, and BAFTA awards. One of the most endearing moments is a montage of each of these talented women receiving their Damehood honor from Prince Philip or Queen Elizabeth II. This exquisitely shot film by Director of Photography Eben Bolter, begins with the Dames practicing vocal warmups such as “mi, mi, mi” or “Peter Piper Pecked A Peck of Pickled Peppers” and soon they settle in for a gossip fest, each of them comically retelling highlights, as well as lowlights, of their respective careers. Their conversation is unscripted and occasionally slips into being comically irreverent. Inner most thoughts and secrets are revealed such as Dame Atkins passing on playing Cleopatra because she felt she wasn’t pretty enough. An archival clip comes up of a young Dame Judi Dench playing that part. Vintage footage is shown throughout the film including scenes from
Illustrating her wonderful sense of humor, and perhaps a bit of insecurity, she replied, “It will never happen again.” With clips from “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and “Private Lives,” Dame Smith shares that when she worked with Olivier, “I was more nervous around him than the critics.” With her signature dry sense of humor, she also tells the story of how during the filming of “Harry Potter” she had to give reaction shots and comically demonstrated the different poses she assumed. There is another clip of a rehearsal from “Gosford Park.” “God forbid you should make a mistake, everyone would just stare at you.” Her parents didn’t approve of her going to the cinema but she revealed that her neighbor took her to see her first film, “The Jazz Singer” starring Larry Parks, a clip of which is shown. Perhaps the only sad note is that Dame Plowright’s sight is failing, but despite that challenge, she is as bubbly, charming, and as effervescent as ever. Possessing a keen sense of humor she quips, “I put

Dame Dench’s performances in “Roots,” “School for Scandal,” and “Romeo & Juliet.” She also remembered that when she played Cecily in “The Importance of Being Ernest,” “I kept forgetting my lines.” There are also clips of her playing different queens including, “Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown” contrasted by her role as “M” in “Skyfall,” and Franco Zeffirelli’s “Tea With Mussolini,” co-starring Plowright, Dench, and Smith. The story is about English expatriates living in Italy at the beginning of World War II. Dame Dench recalls, “After a day of shooting, we would drink a whole bottle of Procecco and then try to find our hotel rooms.” Dame Atkins, whose mother wanted her to be a dancer, remembers when she worked with Olivier in “Othello,” she put his eyelashes on for him every night. Playing Desdemona, she recalled that during one performance he slapped her so hard that it left a black handprint on her face. There is also an amusing clip of her doing a table read for “The Duchess of Malfi.” At the end, the director said, “Well done.”

anyone told you how old we are?” Another question from the off-camera director was, “What would your older self tell your younger self today?” Dame Plowright: “Get in touch with yourself at a young age and don’t wait until you’re older like I did.” Dame Smith: “When in doubt, don’t!” Dame Dench: “Try not to be so susceptible to falling in love.” Dame Atkins: “Don’t be so bad tempered and confrontational, and listen more.” At last these fabulous women are given a glass of champagne and toast each other with love and deep affection but in fact, we should be toasting them for the enormous contribution they’ve made to their profession. The toast should also include the sensitive, creative hand of director Michell, whose “Tea With Dames” is a beautiful thank you note to these ladies and a gift to us. At the end of this captivating film, we hear Dame Dench’s voice reciting from Shakespeare’s “The Tempest:” “We are such stuff as dreams are made on…” and indeed these amazing women collectively embody that famous quote.

‘Chappaquiddick’--A Political & Personal Tragedy
In 1969 Ted Kennedy, the youngest of patriarch Joseph Kennedy’s four sons, was a well-liked senator from the state of Massachusetts. However, his life accomplishments are overshadowed in the eyes of his father by the legacy of his late brothers--JFK and Robert. Things only get worse when he is involved
in a tragic car accident that results in the untimely death of Mary Jo Kopechne, a former aide to his brother Robert. On the night of July 18, 1969, Edward Kennedy, played by Australian actor Jason Clarke, attends a party in honor of the “Boiler Room” girls, young ladies who worked on brother Bobby’s presidential
By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A 50-year-old conservation program that will expire at the end of this month without action from Congress is the focus of a new film released by the Hispanic Access Foundation. The film, “Land, Water, y Comunidad,” explores the importance of the Land and Water Conservation Fund to Latinos across the country, including in Las Cruces. Estefany Gonzales Mendoza, coordinator of Juntos: Our Air, Our Water, says Latinos have a strong connection with sites funded by the LWCF, as places for communities to connect. “It’s not just about maintaining our connectedness to Mother Earth, but it is also about maintaining cultures, traditions and family connectedness, because we know that our families celebrate so many things at the park,” she states. LWCF funding helped conserve the Santa Fe National Forest and Watershed, a National Park Service Latino Heritage site that is significant for its history as the home to Hispano settlers and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The program is not funded by individual taxpayers but rather, from a small portion of federal royalties from offshore drilling. Recently, LWCF helped establish the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge with
outdoor and educational opportunities for Bernalillo and Valencia counties. Jennifer Brandt, deputy director of conservation programs for the Hispanic Access Foundation, says if the program is allowed to expire, parks might not have sufficient personnel or resources for maintenance and improvements, and some may even have to close. “So, without that funding, it would be a detriment to so many communities who have received this funding in the past but wouldn’t be eligible for the funds that maintain these sites, and to help make sure that there are parks in every community, so that everyone has that access,” she points out. New Mexico has received more than $300 million from the program over the past five decades, and Mendoza says generations of Latino families in the state have benefited from these sites. “And we know our communities are already disproportionately impacted by environmental racism, which if Congress weren’t to authorize funding for the Land and Water Conversation Fund, then we know that that would add more stress and it would impact our communities,” she states. Nationwide, the Land and Water Conservation Fund has supported more than 41,000 parks and projects since the 1960s.

Could Undocumented Wic Participants Face Immigration Issues?
KMIR Claudia Buccio September 7, 2018 - Social services such as the women, infants, and children special supplemental nutrition program, better known as WIC, benefit hundreds of undocumented immigrant mothers and their U.S.-born children. A couple of months ago, the Trump Administration has proposed to expand the programs considered to be public charges, potentially making it harder for immigrants to apply for a visa or for a green card. Maria Quezada is part of the legal assistance team at TODEC, a non-profit that serves immigrant community. “A public charge is someone who primarily depends on the government for help whether it be food assistance or cash assistance,” she explained. As of now, WIC does not fall under the category
of public charges, so if an immigrant woman needs to use this service, she shouldn’t be scared of using it. At the end of the day the service is for the child regardless of his or her parent’s immigration status. While legislators are still considering this proposal, the reality is that undocumented parents who use WIC for their children are not jeopardizing their status. Megan Beaman-Jacinto is a civil rights attorney who serves the community in the Coachella Valley. “The use of benefits such as food stamps or Medical for which people are eligible and that are not a type of income but rather a type of low-income assistance,” she said. “Those don’t detrimentally affect people for the future as long as they receive them properly, not through the use of fraud and not in an illegal way.”
Legal experts recommend families continue applying for these benefits. “When the mother or the father is asking for that benefit is not that they are asking it for themselves, they are asking it for the child who is going to need it.” Beaman-Jacinto said that often times, there is a
common misconception that undocumented immigrants are draining the system, but she said that that is not the case because “undocumented people in general don’t qualify for any benefits.” In a statement, the Riverside University Health System-Public Health, which runs the WIC program
in Riverside County said the following: “the WIC program serves about 13,600 participants within the Coachella Valley each month and we have not seen any significant changes in participation.” Source: KMIR
India getting rid of US Treasury securities and buying gold
By Desert Star Staff September 7, 2018 -The world’s second biggest gold consumer continues to replenish its bullion reserves, a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report shows. At the same time, New Delhi is slowly but surely reducing its share of US debt bonds. The annual report from the Indian financial regulator reveals that the country followed other BRICS partners in adding physical gold to its foreign exchange reserves. The RBI reportedly bought 8.46 metric tons of gold during the last fiscal year ending in March. As of the end of June, the country’s central bank held 566.23 metric tons of gold against 557.77 metric tons a year ago. The RBI purchased gold for the first
time in nearly a decade. The regulator acquired 200 metric tons of the precious metal in 2009 shortly after the global financial crisis. According to the RBI, India’s international reserves rose by five percent from June 2017 to June 2018 in comparison to the 6.3 percent growth seen in the same period in the previous year. “Diversification of India’s Foreign Currency Assets continued during the year with attention being ascribed to risk management, including cybersecurity risk. The gold portfolio has also been activated,” the report added. Meanwhile, the country’s share of US sovereign debt saw a gradual decline from $157 billion in March to $148.9 billion by May, according to the latest
US Treasury report. Eliminating US sovereign bonds has recently become a trend among major holders. According to the latest statistics, Russia dumped
84 percent of its holdings during 2018, while Turkey’s share of US Treasuries fell by 42 percent during the first half of the current year. At the same time, Japan
and China, the biggest holders of the US papers also reduced their shares, albeit insignificantly.

Would Kavanaugh’s SCOTUS Nomination Endanger Waterways?
By Desert Star Staff Sept.7, 20198 – Could Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court mean more polluted waterways in Missouri? The state chapter of the Sierra Club believes so, pointing to a ruling Kavanaugh says is one of his “most significant.” In 2014, Kavanaugh argued the EPA should have considered monetary costs when it implemented regulations on mercury and other harmful emissions from power plants. Former Missouri Department of Natural Resources employee Jennifer

Conner says the state lists more than 60 polluted waterways, and mercury is a major concern, especially contamination in fish. It’s led to fish advisories for sensitive groups such as Conner, who is pregnant. “That’s definitely a huge concern, especially in the Ozarks where fishing is a way of life and you don’t really think about the negative health impacts that can occur from fishing,” she states. The state Department of Health and Senior Services suggests people in sensitive groups only eat certain fish caught in Missouri
waters once a month. In the Washington, D.C. Circuit Court case on EPA mercury regulations, Kavanaugh ruled against the majority. However, the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately sided with Kavanaugh in a 5-to-4 decision. Conner says Missouri’s sensitive topography, where surface and water mix, makes protections even more important so that drinking water stays safe. She’s not convinced Kavanaugh will look out for Missourians’ health if he is confirmed. “I would like to think that we are putting people on the September 7, 2018
Supreme Court that make decisions based on a set of ethics that protect human health and the environment, and obviously, based on his past decisions in which he has sided with industry on
these issues, he’s not the sort of leader that we want in that position,” she states. Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing continues Thursday in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
