By Desert Star Staff INDIAN WELLS, CA - – Registration is now open for the Bianca Rae Foundation’s 4th Annual Rae of Hope Retreat being held on Saturday, September 23 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort and Spa (44-400 Indian Wells Lane, Indian Wells). This one-day event invites middle school girls to learn about leadership, social media safety, selflove and inner beauty with breakout groups taught by the women of KESQ News Channel 3, CBS Local 2 news,

and KUNA, Telemundo 15. “Middle school is such a critical age in development. I want young girls to get on the path to success as early as possible in life,” said Bianca Rae, Founder of Bianca Rae Foundation. “I want them to have solid role models in front of them, showing good examples of confidence, self-love, leadership and success. That’s what the Rae of Hope Retreat is all about.” The event has grown tremendously and is anticipating 500 attendees this year, quite the jump from

Two other giant storms – Katia and Jose – have grown to hurricane levels, and now trail the calamitous Category 5 Hurricane Irma, which has battered the Caribbean and is headed toward the southern coast of Florida. Katia, a Category 1 hurricane as of Wednesday evening, is in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall in Mexico late Friday or early Saturday. The storm is forecast to produce up to 10 inches of rain, with the possibility of 15 inches in northern Veracruz, according to the National Hurricane Center.

“This rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain,” NHC said. For comparison, Hurricane Harvey unloaded over 50 inches of rain east of Houston, Texas last week. Katia’s maximum sustained winds are 75mph (120 km/h), compared with Irma’s 185 mph (295 km/h), which makes the latter one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 had 175 mph winds.

Girls move through different session with various guest speakers and engage in hands-on crafts and activities like vision boards that encourage them to dream big and map out their goals, as well as receive “make-unders” that teach less is more when it comes to makeup and are reminded to showcase their true inner beauty. The girls are encouraged to make good decisions and, through gentle guidance and strong examples, become the best

versions of themselves. “We are honored and proud to be a sponsor of the Rae of Hope Retreat. This wonderful initiative is motivating and inspiring for young girls in the Coachella Valley,” said Mike Stutz, General Manager of KESQ News Channel 3. The retreat is open to all Coachella Valley middle school girls. There is a $10 registration fee with scholarships provided by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “Kindness Curriculum” Available for Teachers

A new Kindness Curriculum developed at the University of Wisconsin helps preschool children to learn to empathize, forgive and be generous. (Wm. Graf, UW) By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. – As children begin the school year, teachers may wonder how to integrate social and emotional learning in the classroom, along with reading, writing and math.

That’s one of the concepts behind the new Kindness Curriculum developed for teachers by the UW-Madison Center for Healthy Minds. The curriculum helps preschool teachers encourage

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - California is home to one in four Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients in the country - or about 228,000 people - so President Donald Trump’s decision to end the program has provoked a storm of criticism from a wide range of groups. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday that no new applications from people brought here as children will be processed, effective immediately. Joshua Pechthalt, president of the California Federation of Teachers, said many students who now face an uncertain future may have a hard time concentrating in school. “It’s a very bad day,” he said, “and I think that it’s reflective of an administration that they say they have heart, they say they’re concerned

about these young people - but in the end, they’re more concerned about campaign promises.” Sessions said the move is necessary to restore the rule of law. Congress could throw the so-called “Dreamers” a lifeline by passing the DREAM Act or some version of comprehensive immigration reform. However, lawmakers have been unable to agree on this issue for many years, going back to a failed attempt during the George W. Bush administration. Karen Ferguson, executive director of the Northern California division of the International Rescue Committee, said she was horrified to hear of DACA’s demise. “President Obama called this decision ‘cruel and lacking in decency.’ I don’t think I can say it better than that,” she said. “This is not

children to learn to deal with their emotions, and learn concepts such as kindness and forgiveness. Marianne Spoon, the Center’s director of communications and

marketing, says the preschool years are an important time for brain development. “We were curious how this might work and whether it would be an effective approach for teachers and for students, but we’re also looking at it from a prevention-oriented perspective,” Spoon explains. “So, how can we start out kids early in life to set them on a positive developmental trajectory?” Spoon says it’s more effective to address these issues at the preschool level than to wait for emotional problems to develop later. The Kindness Curriculum is a free download to teachers who sign up on the Center for Healthy Minds website. Spoon says it’s part of the Center’s larger initiative to help understand children’s well being, and a number of studies are going on now. “One is more mindfulness,

attention, emotion regulation, and the other is focused really on pro-social behaviors,” Spoon explains. “So, how do you empathize and forgive, and be generous and kind to other people? Those are the types of scopes that we’re really focusing on with these children.” According to Spoon, the Kindness Curriculum provides the tools to teach these concepts. “In very manageable ways for students to understand, but also things that they can take home with them,” she states. “So, we have the ABC’s – the attention, breath and body, and caring. These are three concepts that are heavily emphasized in the curriculum.” Early findings show that children who participated in the curriculum improved on social and emotional measures, and also performed better on traditional academic measures.

Also at odds with the governor on the issue is Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who joined a multi-state lawsuit on Wednesday aimed at keeping DACA going. The governor, speaking at a health center in Lawndale on Wednesday, said he doesn’t think the issue should be handled individually by states. “I do not believe this challenge for these children can be addressed on a state-bystate basis, I think that would not be correct,” Rauner said. “We need a comprehensive immigration reform that should be done at the federal level, for the entire nation, and should

be done by Congress.” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Trump’s decision to end legal protection for 800,000 immigrant children “contradicts” the assurances he gave before he was elected, and said that will come back to haunt him. Chicago is a sanctuary city for immigrants, and Emanuel said he wants the state to offer protection as well. “Given what President Trump is now talking about, I would like the state of Illinois to follow Chicago’s lead and have state aid open to Dreamers,” Emmanuel said Madigan joined 14 other states and the District of Columbia in filing suit to block Trump’s decision on DACA, calling his move “fundamentally unfair” and illegal. www.desertstarweekly.com

the city rescuing residents clinging to the rooftops of their flooded homes. Fellow Texans arrived in boats, large and small, to carry people to safety. The country became as one--fellow Americans looking out for one another. The countless number of boats of all shapes and sizes was reminiscent of WWII when hundreds of British forces were stranded on the beach at Dunkirk. When word reached England, men came in their boats, from pleasure craft to fishing boats, to ferry the stranded military men to safety before German forces arrived. In times of war and disaster the common man rises to heroic stature to help save their countrymen and women. Such was the case in devastated Houston. Tragedy also struck those who came to help in the evacuation effort. A policeman was one of the first to die as he rushed to work to assist in the relief

effort and several men were electrocuted when their boat hit a downed power pole as they came to save their fellow Houstonians. Everyday people became heroes. As people were forced to evacuate their homes they left with their children, pets and what few belongings they could salvage. Despite their losses, so many expressed gratitude as they were saved from the rushing water that turned streets into raging rivers. One particularly upsetting situation involved elderly women sitting waist high in water as they waited for help. Yet in the midst of it all, one woman sat patiently knitting. Helicopters, piloted by the military, rescued many from rooftops and the water below as strong winds buffeted their choppers. Still they were able to hoist men, women and children into their craft and fly them to safety. Despite the devastation

all around, there were also a few moment that made us smile. A case in point was a dog walking in the downpour carrying a bag of dog food in his teeth. Neighbors knew the old dog well and returned him home to his family. As the relentless rain continued to pour down and flood waters started to reach rooftops, people continued to help one another, bringing them to shelters which soon became filled to capacity. But through it all the country came together as one. Suddenly the political animosity and rancor that has divided us for so long seemed to disappear and our divided nation joined as one in a united effort to aid fellow American in their time of great peril and need. All of us watching this terrible drama unfold felt a strong desire to reach out and help in our own way. Telethons are being organized to raise money and the wealthy, from movie stars and

celebrities to the president have donated millions. We too can be a part of the healing by donating money to reputable charities and organizations like the Salvation Army, the Red Cross or even by donating at houses of worship. No donation is too small. If we all help the money will mount up. Walmart has partnered with the Red Cross to amplify personal donations. For each dollar you donate to the American Red Cross through Walmart.com, Walmart will donate twice the value through September 6, 2017. Walmart will match each dollar of your donation with a contribution of $2 worth of cash or needed merchandise to the American Red Cross, up to $10 million. While Harvey has wreaked havoc on Houston, it has also brought us together as one in our desire to help --because we are all Americans first and foremost.

Following her stunning win over world number two Simona Halep in her first Grand Slam appearance after her return from a doping ban, Sharapova was also made to work hard to overcome Babos in Wednesday’s second round encounter at Flushing Meadows. The Russian eventually prevailed 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1, recovering from losing the first set by battling hard in the second before hitting her stride and easing through the third set. “I knew I wanted to get it

done and I did,” Sharapova said after the victory over the world number 59. “I felt like it was a scrappy match but sometimes those

days are the best, because you get through and give yourself another chance. “In the second set I felt like I was physically fresh,” Sharapova added. “That gave me a lot of confidence. I just wanted to be the fittest player out there in the end, and I was.” Sharapova, currently ranked world number 146, came back from a 15-month doping ban in April, but is getting her first taste of Grand Slam tennis at the US Open since her return, having missed Wimbledon through injury and been denied a wildcard to the French Open. The Russian, 30, was given a wildcard for the main draw in New York, and has generally received a warm welcome from fans – which she remarked on after Wednesday’s win.

“I’ve had an amazing reaction from fans since I’ve been back, and that’s been very special,” said Sharapova, who won the US Open title in 2006 – one of her five Grand Slam triumphs. She now faces 18-yearold wildcard Sofia Kenin in the third round, after the American beat compatriot Sachia Vickery in three sets in their second-round encounter. Elsewhere in the women’s singles draw, Russia’s Elena Makarova shocked fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki in three sets to set up a thirdround clash against Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro. Fellow Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova, Evgeniya Rodina, Elena Vesnina and Daria Kasatkina will all be bidding to make the women’s singles third round when they play later on Thursday.

Brady not thinking of ‘08 injury as he prepares for Chiefs By Kyle Hightower FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The previous time Patriots quarterback Tom Brady opened a season at home against Kansas City in 2008, it ended with him limping off the field with a season-ending knee injury. Now nine years removed from the most significant injury of his career, Brady said it is the furthest thing from his mind as New England prepares to host the Chiefs on Thursday night. “Yeah, I didn’t think about that,” Brady said Monday. “Time flies.” What’s also a distant memory is the unfamiliar situation he found himself in last season when he was forced to sit out the first four games of 2016 after accepting his four-game “Deflategate” punishment. Brady brushed off that disappointment by capturing his fifth Super Bowl in February. Now he’s happy just to be thinking about football and how to get the best of a Kansas City team that was the AFC’s No. 2 seed in the playoffs last season. It’s a unique challenge for a Patriots offense that will have several new options for the 40-year-old quarterback to utilize as he tries to deal with a defense that ranked

first in the NFL last season with 33 takeaways. With minimal new film of Kansas City’s starters to dissect at this point, Brady is expecting to see plenty of wrinkles from what he called an “explosive” unit. One of the players he singled out was cornerback Marcus Peters. Peters tied for the NFL lead with eight interceptions during the 2015 regular season. He followed that up by tying for second in the league with six picks in 2016. Brady also is expecting to be challenged by safety Eric Berry and the active linebacker duo of Derrick Johnson and Justin Houston. “They have playmakers,” Brady said. “When they’re roaming around, you can’t just stare them down right where you want to throw the ball. It’s always a little cat and mouse with safeties and cornerbacks. ... That’s why they force that many turnovers.” But Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said familiarity alone won’t be enough to get Brady off his game. “I don’t know if it helps. You’re aware of how good he is,” Sutton said. “When you play (271) games, pass for

61,000 yards - or whatever he has - you’re playing against a football player, a quarterback that’s really talented, that has a great skillset - great command of his offense in all regards. It’s just a huge challenge.” But even at 40, Brady said opening a season in prime time still offers the same excitement as it did early in his career. “Everyone’s pretty amped up for this one,” he said. “It’s been waiting a long time for this. ... It’s a big game and it’s an important one.” NOTES: The Patriots placed LB Shea McClellin on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. They filled his roster spot by adding RB Brandon Bolden. Bolden, who has been a fixture on special teams since arriving in New England in 2012, was originally cut on Saturday. ... OT Cam Fleming (ankle) and DT Vincent Valentine (knee) did not participate in practice Monday. DL Adam Butler (knee), DB Nate Ebner (shoulder), LB Harvey Langi (concussion) and WRs Malcolm Mitchell (knee) and Matt Slater (hamstring) were all limited participants. Florida governor declares state of emergency as Caribbean brace for impact

By Desert Star Staff Florida Governor Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency for the entire state in response to Hurricane Irma.

A number of idyllic Caribbean islands have been warned that they are in the direct path of the Category 4 storm. Governor Scott issued an

executive order Monday stating that “Hurricane Irma is a major and life-threatening storm and Florida must be prepared.” Scott said he wanted to

ensure that local governments have ample time and resources to prepare for the storm. The latest advisory indicated the threat to South Florida was increasing and residents should be prepared. The extreme weather conditions are now expected to barrel past the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, Antigua, Montserrat and St Kitts within the next 36 hours, the US National Hurricane Center reports. Hurricane Irma has also been upgraded to a Category 4 storm in the last number of hours. It is currently surging west over the Atlantic Ocean at 14mph. Earlier, the meteorological office of Antigua and Barbuda warned the storm was carrying winds of up to 115mph and that “further strengthening is possible” before it passes through the Caribbean. Dangerous increases in water levels by up to 9 feet could be experienced

northwest direction. However, Jose is unlikely to make landfall. With the three hurricanes on the map simultaneously, all eyes are on Irma, which is expected to bring a 20-foot storm surge and 20 inches of rain.

On Wednesday, it slammed the island of Barbuda before hitting St. Martin and Anguilla. “Barbuda is literally rubble,” Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda told ABS TV/Radio Antigua.

Water and communication on the island have been cut off, Browne said. “It is just a total devastation.” About 1,800 people live on Barbuda. Destruction on Barbuda

US weather experts believe the hurricane is most likely to hit the northern part of the island group. “The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast in areas of onshore winds, where the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves,” the NHC said. “Hurricane conditions are possible within the hurricane watch area in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by late Wednesday, with tropical storm conditions possible by early Wednesday,” it added. Residents and boats owners on the islands have been urged by the British Virgin Islands government to secure their property in advance of Hurricane Irma.

Charges Dismissed Against WV Journalist By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A West Virginia journalist whose arrest drew national attention is off the hook. Prosecutors dismissed charges on Wednesday against Dan Heyman, a reporter for Public News Service, who faced six months of jail time for an incident in May at the State Capitol. The official complaint alleged Heyman caused a disturbance by yelling questions at U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price. Heyman did not know at the time that Price was walking in a group that included White House adviser Kellyanne Conway. Heyman’s attorney, Tim DiPiero, explains video evidence shows Heyman did not violate the law. “Dan was told to stay away from her, meaning Kellyanne Conway, and from the video, you can see he precisely does that – he stays away from her and runs ahead to catch up with Tom Price,” DiPiero points out. “And then,

within seconds, he’s arrested with no other admonition.” DiPiero adds that while freedom of the press is important, it isn’t always respected. Heyman says he’s thankful for the outcome, as well as the outpouring of support he’s received. “I always felt like I would get a fair hearing from the court system, which I’m grateful for, because not every reporter around the world can count on that,” he states. “And I feel like the free press is alive and healthy in this country, in spite of some things that would tend to undermine it.” Public News Service founder Lark Corbeil says she’s also appreciative of the help from the legal team and journalism groups that continually fight for First Amendment rights. “The committed group of people that are helping Dan are part of a larger movement by many, many attorneys and journalists nationwide, who see protection of freedom of the press and our democracy

As for Heyman, he says he’ll continue to ask the tough questions on behalf of those who can’t. “The job of a reporter is to sort through this stuff, and

to look out for the interests of people who maybe are being ignored in the legislative process,” Heyman states. “So, I felt like I was really doing my job, and it was unfortunate that I got into trouble for doing that.” Not long after Heyman’s

were rolled back. Dave Cooke, a senior vehicles analyst with the Union of Concerned Scientists, says there is clear evidence the standards already are working to save drivers money and cut emissions. He says any kind of a rollback will hit Americans in the pocketbook. “To date, we’re saving about $50 million a day thanks to the standards that are on the books,” he states. “And as long as we stay the course, by 2030 that number will grow to over $300 million per day. “ A recent report found that in the last midterm review, the costs of achieving the standards were overestimated by as much as 40 percent. The Sierra Club, the American Lung Association and the Environmental Defense Fund are among the groups opposing rollbacks. To date, more than 300,000 comments in favor of keeping the standards have been received by the EPA.

Michiganders aren’t currently working or in college - and they need more options. “There are many training programs that offer certificates, licenses; there are two-year degrees at the community colleges,” he said. “Those provide skills that can get people into the workforce and earning a livable salary.”

Environmental, Health Groups Push to Keep Fuel Rules

By Desert Star Staff DETROIT – It’s been less than a year since government agencies conducted an extensive review of the Obama administration’s fuel efficiency standards, and clean energy

advocates want to put the brakes on a new attempt to repeat the entire process. On Wednesday, the Environmental Protection Agency held an all-day meeting on its proposal to

reconsider requirements that the U.S. car and light truck fleet achieve an average 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. Carol Lee Rawn, director of Transportation Programs for the nonprofit group Ceres,

attended the hearing. On top of the health benefits of reducing emissions, she maintains the current standards are keys to innovation and to ensuring that Detroit stays a driving force in the automotive world. “It’s necessary to have strong standards in place in order to protect the leadership position of the United States,” she stresses. “It’s not going to be able to compete in this new world if it’s falling behind on fuel efficiency and new technologies.” Critics say clean car standards place too much of a burden on manufacturers. However last year’s review, in which the car companies were involved, found the standards to be reasonable and affordable for both consumers and automakers. Michigan currently has more than 180 facilities that make components and materials that improve fuel efficiency, providing jobs that Rawn says would be in jeopardy if the standards

By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. -- This Labor Day, while Michigan’s unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest point in years, analysts say that isn’t all good news. Much of the decline, they say, is due to a loss of workers. Michigan’s workforce reached its peak of just over 5 million people in 2000, but a new report from the

Michigan League for Public Policy shows it has shrunk by 326,000 since then. Peter Ruark, senior policy analyst with the League, said there are many reasons people leave the workforce, including disability and retirement. But he said it is particularly troubling that the state has seen a big decline in the number of workers ages 16 to 24.

“We know that Michigan’s population is aging, and that even though workers are staying in the workforce longer and retiring later, they eventually will retire,” Ruark said. “So, we need skilled, younger workers to be able to replace them.” To boost the size of the workforce and cater to both older and younger workers, the report recommended increasing

Michigan’s minimum wage, protecting the state’s Medicaid expansion, making higher education more affordable, and helping single parents get the support and training they need to find and keep good jobs. Ruark said while the state also needs to address the large number of university graduates who leave Michigan to work elsewhere, many young

By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The annual New Mexico State Fair is a great way to spend time with family – unless children easily suffer from sensory overload. This year, fair officials are trying something new to include everyone who wants to attend. When the State Fair opens Thursday, it will be the first in the country to offer a Sensory Station – a safe space for children and adults with special needs including Down syndrome and autism. Sarah Baca, executive director of the New Mexico Autism Society, has worked with fair officials to create a space that will allow those who experience sensory overload a break from the hubbub. “There’s a lot to see at the State Fair, and oftentimes individuals with sensory

‘09 US Open champ del Potro saves match points; Federer next By Howard Fendrich NEW YORK (AP) - Juan Martin del Potro’s stay at the U.S. Open really should be over. Nearly was. The 2009 champion at Flushing Meadows somehow kept staving off defeat in the fourth round against No. 6-seeded Dominic Thiem on Monday. Del Potro was sick and certainly looked sluggish as can be at the outset, dropping the opening two sets with little resistance. Then he trailed by a big margin in the fourth set, even facing two match points. Still, del Potro never gave in or gave up, eventually working his way all the way back on the strength of powerful serves and thunderous forehands to edge Thiem 1-6, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4 over more than 3½ hours and set up a quarterfinal showdown against Roger Federer. “Thanks so much for all the support you gave,” del Potro told the boisterous Grandstand crowd that regaled the 24thseeded Argentine with “Ole!” chants. “It helped me a lot. ... I won’t forget this match.” Thiem also aided del Potro by playing his worst tennis when he was closest to victory in the fourth set, which he led 5-2. Thiem served for the match at 5-3, but got broken. Leading 6-5, he managed to get within a point of winning at 15-40 on del Potro’s serve, but a pair of aces at 127 mph and 121 mph erased those two chances. The ensuing tiebreaker was dominated by del Potro, who closed it with a booming cross-court forehand winner on the run. In the fifth set, del Potro closed things on his second match point, when Thiem double-faulted. How close was this? Thiem actually won more points, 141-139. When it was over, del Potro raised both arms overhead and threw his head back, enjoying the fans’ adulation,

then crossed himself. He joked that he thought he should get a trophy just for winning this one. It was by far the day’s most enthralling match, with spectators’ roars heard all the way across the grounds at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Federer was beating No. 33 Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. The only bit of intrigue came after the second set, when Federer left to take a medical timeout. He said afterward with a laugh that it was so he could get “a bit of a rub on my back - or my bottom - and I didn’t want to do it on court.” His back had been bothering Federer before the U.S. Open and restricted his practice time, something he blamed for problems while getting pushed to five sets in each of the first two rounds last week. But the lopsided win against Kohlschreiber - who never held a break point - was Federer’s second in a row in straight sets. Federer improved to 12-0 against Kohlschreiber; his record against del Potro is 16-5. But del Potro won their meeting in the 2009 final in New York in five sets for his only Grand Slam title, ending Federer’s streak of five straight U.S. Open championships - and he hasn’t won the trophy since. The other matchup on that half of the men’s bracket will be No. 1 Rafael Nadal against 19-year-old Andrey Rublev, the youngest quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open since Andy Roddick was 19 in 2001. Nadal got to the round of eight in New York for the first time since his 2013 title, overwhelming 64th-ranked Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. “Every victory, every set that you win, is more confidence,” Nadal said. “That what’s I am doing.”

Roger Federer, of Switzerland, during the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, in New York. Dolgopolov, who has been interviewed by anticorruption investigators about a match with unusual betting patterns last month at another tournament, was hesitant to give Nadal too much credit. “I was just feeling flat,” Dolgopolov said. “I don’t know why.” Now Nadal gets to play a fifth consecutive unseeded foe in Rublev, who took out No. 9 David Goffin 7-5, 7-6 (5), 6-3. The top-seeded woman had even less trouble than Nadal did Monday: 2016 runner-up Karolina Pliskova

beat 91st-ranked American Jennifer Brady 6-1, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Pliskova will take on No. 20 CoCo Vandeweghe, who beat Lucie Safarova 6-4, 7-6 (2) to become the third U.S. woman in the next round. Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens advanced Sunday. There was a chance for a fourth American to join them, because 15th-seeded Madison Keys was scheduled to play Monday’s last match against No. 4 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. That winner faces Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, who beat Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-4

to become the first qualifier in 36 years to reach the U.S. Open women’s quarterfinals. The 32-year-old Estonian is ranked 418th after missing much of the past two years with problems in the soles of both feet and a virus known as a precursor to mononucleosis. “It’s pretty amazing where I am now,” Kanepi said, “compared to where I was few months ago.” Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter. com/HowardFendrich Source: KMIR/AP
