By Robert Kinsler The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival – better known simply as “Coachella” – is coming to Indio, California over two fastmoving weekends, April 15-17 and again April 22-24, 2016. Coachellagoers from around the planet are already planning their trips to the 17th edition of an event that has once again gathered up an eclectic line-up of artists from across the musical spectrum to perform in front of audiences spread out across the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Rock, jazz, blues, soul, EDM, folk, alt country and rap artists will perform on a number of outdoor and

indoor stages positioned throughout the sprawling festival grounds. Original and insightful artwork installations positioned throughout the event make for an even more exceptional experience. This round-up will highlight my “wish list” of performances that I hope to catch at Coachella. However, there is always the chance that two or three of my favorite artists will be performing at the same time confirming the age-old advice that life is sometimes about making choices. With 180 or so acts performing, it is simply impossible to see all the artists.

The James Beard Luncheon 2016

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The James Beard luncheon is a big part of the Fashion Week festival. Celebrity Chef Cat Cora and Chefs Valerie Gordo, Gale Gand and Suzanne Tracht all stood on the runway in front of the hundreds of guests showing them how to make the dish they were eating. This luncheon serves as a kickoff to the Wine and Food event that continues on the weekend. These women are top chefs in the industry, own their own restaurants or have TV shows. Co-producers of the event were Tony Marchese and Dominic Peterson. The few and far between rain showers came on the first day of the event. The luncheon was delayed in order for workers to try to soak up the water from the backstage area. The carpets for guests were wet but few let that bother them for enjoying the luncheon. Even Dan Ball who was the

emcee for the day took an unbrella to stay dry during a brief shower so as not to disrupt the luncheon as he told of the dish being served. Volunteers poured the different wines for each dish before serving to all the guests. Chef Suzanne Tracht served a Pea Emcee Dan Ball. Photo by Pat Krause Puree served with a white wine. Chairman and Presenter for the event was Harold Matzner. There was free Valet Parking, Open Bar, Hors-d’oeuvres, Caricature portraits, Tattoos and really great entertainment. Kristine W. had hundreds of guests surrounding the stage. Kristine had two back up dancers that never stopped dancing along with her. She wore a long cape that the dancers kept swinging to the music. Kristine came down onto the floor to greet a few guests and sing to the crowd. The guests wanted more entertainment so they clapped until she came back out for a couple more songs. Cell phones were busy taking videos of the entertainer. Kristine gave an amazing performance as everyone there would comment later on her wonderful voice and dancing. The DJ Corey D. from Pride Nation Radio had the guests dancing after Kristine W.’s

performance was done. Cell phones and cameras were in big demand as guests wanted photos of those that came in costume and wanted photos with them. The costumes were fun and creative. The food by LuLu’s was delicious as salads and their famous mac and cheese was served. This is the biggest yearly fundraising membership drive. VIP tickets for the night included a yearly membership. Guests were asked to come as their favorite superhero like Robin, Batman, Wonder Woman, Cat Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and any other comic book hero. The list of comic book heroes over the years is endless and the costumes depicted many of those characters. Monies raised go to Museum Operations, exhibitions and Educational programs.

Many Women Face Financial Crisis in Retirement

By Janice Gough Baby boomer women are the first generation to hit retirement age in a time when they’re less likely to have a defined benefit pension, don’t get enough Social Security to make ends meet, and have not managed to save enough to make up the difference. They find themselves in the workforce well into retirement age without enough income to survive, and facing poverty rates close to 12 percent. When it comes to retirement, women are in even more trouble than men. Numerous studies indicate

that a retirement crisis is pending, with most Americans having saved barely enough to get through a single year, much less all the years of post-employment retirement. With increased cost of health care, women are particularly challenged in putting away enough money to see them through the years when they leave the workplace. Women live longer than men and will need more money than men to see them through retirement. Today women work well into their retirement years and some may not retire at all. Some of their downfall may be a combination of investment losses from the Great Recession and a need to make up for lower career retirement savings. The percentage of women working for employers offering defined benefit plans has shrunk, and the median value of their accounts is a third lower than that of men’s. The lower median value in their accounts is partially due to the fact that women tend to contribute less to their accounts, however another contributing factor is women’s dislike of risk. In a world where part-time employees are more common among women, most would not be eligible for retirement plans. Most retirement plans require one to work full time and have established period of tenure. Defined benefit plan benefits are not offered in all

fields. Women in the health care, education and public administration fields, where DB pension plans are more prevalent, have higher incomes in retirement and lower rates of poverty than in other industries, due to their higher wage potential and participation in their employer’s pension plan. With less income in retirement to depend on, women will have to stretch their dollar further to make ends meet. Even though the median household incomes of individuals aged 65 and older has increased, women have twenty-six percent less income than men, face higher medical expenses and are more likely to need long-term care provided by a facility or caregiver. According the Department of Aging, one out of two women will access the need for long

term care after age 65. Using the Elder Economic Security Standard Index, an average single woman 65 and older needs $2,002 per month if she rents a home, and $410 a month for health costs — totaling $123,000 if she lived to age 90 and that cost remained constant. It is estimated that both men and women would need savings of $220,000 for health care in retirement. Social Security payments are based on the income one makes in the top 40 quarters of work, leaving women “short changed” as many worked in their homes before entering the workforce. Social Security is an important source of income for older households with incomes less than $80,000, and women who are widowed, divorced and over age 70

Ten Damaging HOA Myths By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

Some myths are not only wrong, but harmful. Here are ten HOA myths which create problems for communities. Governing documents are boilerplate. Most HOA homebuyers carefully read their purchase contract, and ignore the CC&Rs, bylaws and rules. However, those documents are binding whether or not the owner reads them. Avoid surprises – read the documents! It’s my balcony. In condominium associations, balconies are usually exclusive use common area. It is not “MY balcony; because it is “OUR balcony”. The owner has the exclusive right to use it, but the HOA still controls how it is used and maintained. Owners often misunderstand that exclusive use areas are owned in common and therefore still under association jurisdiction. If the association is off course, I can withhold my assessment payments. This is

a potentially disastrous myth. Members cannot withhold or offset claims against the HOA as a defense to their assessment delinquency. Withholding assessments will result in late fees, collection costs and attorney fees increasing the problem. The better approach is to follow Civil Code 5658, by paying the disputed amount and then filing a small claims court claim seeking a refund. If it’s inside my home, the HOA has no say. Most (but not all) condominiums are defined by a subdivision map or condominium plan describing the unit as “airspace”. This means the member often owns the carpet on their floor and the paint on their walls while everything underneath is common area, requiring HOA permission to alter. Before opening a new doorway, check the condominium plan and CC&Rs to see if HOA permission is needed. I have the right to look at any record I want. Members have rights to a large amount of records, including certain financial records (Civil Code 5200), annual April 13, 2016

disclosures (Civil 5300 and 5310), transfer disclosure documents (Civil Code 4525) and draft board minutes (Civil Code 4950). However, if it is outside of these areas, it may not be available to member inspection. The association manager works for me. The manager (and all other association service providers) work for the association. The association speaks through the board. Individual members do not direct association vendors. Officer or board vacancies and appointing committee members are “personnel” decisions. While personnel decisions are reserved for closed board discussion under Civil Code 4935, volunteers (and vendors) are not “personnel”. Only persons receiving paychecks on the HOA’s account are employees and “personnel”. The president is the boss. Presidents are not the decider in associations – the board is. HOA presidents have much less power than a normal corporate president. Healthy associations understand this, and govern with a board led by (not

rely on those benefits for a majority of their income. Social Security accounts for 90 percent of income for nearly half of unmarried women, including widows, aged 65 and older. Nearly twothirds of older Americans, in poverty, are women. Women are 80 percent more likely to be impoverished, while women between the ages of 75 and 79 are three times more likely, widowed women are twice as likely as widowed men. controlled by) its president. Good boards will not increase assessments. A basic board responsibility is to maintain and preserve the common area, and budget for reasonably anticipated expenses. The goal is not a zero increase, but an accurate budget. Budgets should track reality, and the reality is that expenses rise over time. Boards that “hold the line” often skimp on maintenance and fail to deposit money into the reserve fund. The state can take over if we need help. A courtordered receiver, appointed to run the HOA, will cost much more than a manager. Don’t give up, instead learn to do it right. Maybe take a CAI class or two. Calif. Child-Care Workers Rally for Higher Pay By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES California may have just passed a $15 minimum wage but it doesn’t apply to many child-care providers, who are independent contractors. So today, a group known as the “Raising California Together Coalition” gathers in Sacramento to push for policy changes that its members say would lift childcare workers out of poverty. Many in-home child-

care providers are paid by the state to care for children from low-income families. Tonia McMillian has run a small day care, Kiddie Depot, in L.A. for 22 years, and says she barely scrapes by because the rates are so low. She feels she can’t just raise prices, because the families who depend on her are already stretched to the limit. “It’s not fair. There’s nothing fair about this at all,” says McMillian. “And this

system needs a complete upheaval. Let’s make it where it’s equitable.” Statistics show California is home to more than 100,000 family child-care home operators and more than 7,800 child-care centers. McMillian notes that centers large and small will have a hard time paying their employees the new minimum wage unless the state reimbursement rates go up. Kate Miller, a senior

associate for early childhood policy with the nonprofit advocacy group Children Now, says California legislators could raise the reimbursement rates significantly by approving the $800 million budget request made by the Women’s Legislative Caucus. “The reimbursement rate for state-subsidized programs is so low right now that childcare workers are making incredibly low wages,” Miller

says. “At some estimates, the family child-care worker is below $5 an hour.” A study released Wednesday by the Economic Policy Institute shows in 2014, the median wage for child-care workers was almost 40 percent less than other professions. It also says increasing child-care workers’ wages leads to less turnover and higher quality care for children.

Conservation Groups Rally to Ban Highly Toxic Rat Poison By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. Dozens of people rallied in Sacramento on Tuesday to support a bill that would ban certain kinds of rat poison. The protest took place across the street from the annual meeting of California Pest Control Operators, which opposes Assembly Bill 2596. Most rat poison was pulled from store shelves last year, but it is still widely used by professional pest-control companies. Lisa Owens-Viani, director of a conservation group called Raptors Are the Solution, said secondary poisonings are a huge problem. “When an owl or a hawk

or a mountain lion, bobcat, the domestic cat, when they eat a rat that has been poisoned,” she said, “they also become poisoned because the rat poison is very, very toxic.” Advocates suggest that homeowners go back to traditional methods such as getting a cat, or using a snap trap. There are also electronic traps that go inside of bait boxes. They urge people to remove anything that may be attracting rats to the property, such as fallen fruit or pet food. Owens-Viani said 8,500 children were accidentally sickened by rodenticides in 2014 in the United States, many after bait was placed in high-traffic areas such

as public housing units. “A lot of times they’re flavored like chocolate or peanut butter,” she said, “and little kids can pick up the bait and eat it. They end up in the emergency room. Usually doesn’t kill kids although it has in a couple of instances.” Wildlife officials have documented poisonings in at least 37 different types of animals. Twenty-six California cities and counties have passed resolutions urging the public and pest-control operators to avoid rodent poisons. The text of AB 2596 is online at leginfo. legislature.ca.gov.

CIA director says he ‘won’t bring back waterboarding’

By Desert Star Staff Director of the CIA John Brennan, in a candid interview, has pledged never to bring back waterboarding – the practice classified in 2009 as torture – even if the future

US president ordered it. The practice has received condemnation ever since the release of the long-awaited CIA memo on torture, which revealed waterboarding to be in widespread use in the

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES Juvenile justice advocates are praising a decision this week by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to look into revamping the way kids who can’t afford an attorney are represented. Right now, if the public defender has a conflict of interest - say, they’re defending another juvenile accused in the same crime - one of the cases goes to a so-called “panel attorney,” who gets only a small, flat fee to handle it. Attorney and juvenile-justice expert Carol Chodroff said that leads to a huge number of plea deals, regardless of the merits of the case. “The problem with paying someone $350 for the life of the case is that there’s no incentive to really litigate the

case,” she said. “If you plead at the first hearing, you’ll get the same amount as if you litigate, take the case to trial and work it up for a year and a half.” A new report from the University of CaliforniaBerkeley, ordered by the county, said that compared with public defenders, panel attorneys take much less time on cases and are much less likely to consult experts, social workers or doctors. Los Angeles is the only county in the state to pay panel attorneys a flat fee. Chodroff called the difference in outcomes for the kids unacceptable. “In so many disparate areas, there’s disparities - the number of kids who get transferred to the adult system; the number of kids who face much more punitive

US War on Terror during the Bush Jr. administration. Presidential candidates have all been weighing in with their stances on it to appeal to their constituency (with the Republicans predictably being in favor). But in an upcoming interview to be broadcast on NBC Monday night in the US, Brennan appears resolute. “I will not agree to carry out some of these tactics and techniques I’ve heard bandied about because this institution needs to endure,” he says. According to the CIA report on torture, the waterboarding interrogation technique consists of a series of “near drownings” that leave suspects “completely unresponsive.” But all throughout the first decade of the 2000s, the technique was widely used by the United States and its allies in extracting information from Middle Eastern suspects and

inmates in special prisons or secret facilities worldwide. That waterboarding was cruel and ineffective was not an opinion shared by the former CIA Director Michael Hayden, who cited the opinion of three, US attorneys-generals. Hayden’s view on waterboarding seemingly revolved around the person using it: if Syria’s Bashar Assad - it was torture; if the US, in pursuit of saving American lives - then not. However, he did add that “if President Assad did it according to the rules the CIA used, if President Assad did it with medical personnel present… this is the CIA way,” in an interview to Al Jazeera a week ago. “I’m not saying it’s torture. You’re not going to get me to say it’s torture,” Hayden also said. The presidential race is heating up. Republican

hopeful Donald Trump says he’d bring back “a hell of a lot worse” in the pursuit of extracting information from terrorist suspects. Other candidates are taking a notably softer stance, though Ted Cruz of Texas wouldn’t be above using it as well. Previously, the CIA director stood in favor of the technique. After the release of the torture report in December 2014, a year after he took office, Brennan defended the practice: “Our reviews indicate that the detention and interrogation program produced useful intelligence that helped the United States thwart attack plans, capture terrorists and save lives.” He did add he was uncertain if such techniques were better or worse than more approaches that are humane.

Changing lives through the power of art By Madeline Zuckerman In 1946, Idyllwild Arts carved out its niche in the world and began fulfilling its mission, “Changing Lives Through the Transformative Power of Art.” Incorporated as an arts education institution in 1946 by an inspired group of stellar benefactors, Idyllwild Arts was envisioned to provide a secluded place where people of all backgrounds could come together to experience the arts. The concept was simple – to establish an educational arts institution for the purpose of promoting and advancing artistic and cultural development primarily for the advancement of instruction in music and the arts. Thus, the Idyllwild Arts Foundation was born and since its inception, Idyllwild Arts has more than fulfilled the legacy of these pioneers. Today, Idyllwild Arts has become home to generations of global artists who have been inspired to make a difference in the world.

The community knows well Idyllwild Arts’ nationallyacclaimed ‘JAZZ IN THE PINES,’ which takes place every August on the school’s campus in Idyllwild, California. But, Idyllwild Arts offers much, much more . . .two dynamic programs consisting of The Idyllwild Arts Academy and The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. The Idyllwild Arts Academy is recognized as the country’s premier and internationally-acclaimed residential arts High School, providing pre-professional training in the arts and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum to a diverse student body of gifted young artists. Idyllwild Arts Academy’s 300 students come from more than 25 countries, pursuing artistic excellence in Music, Theatre, Dance, Visual Art, Creative Writing, Film & Digital Media, and InterArts/Fashion Design. Through their worldrenowned Summer Program and prestigious Arts Academy, Idyllwild Arts remains at the

forefront of arts education by providing artists of all ages, with the skills necessary to be successful in the 21st Century. Discovery, critical thinking, problem-solving, and art-making continue to be the hallmarks of distinction of an Idyllwild Arts education. “2016 marks a very exciting time in the school’s history – the 70th Anniversary of Idyllwild Arts,” stated Pamela Jordan, President of Idyllwild Arts Foundation. “This special milestone will be celebrated at several elegant upcoming events including the exclusive gathering at the Indian Wells home of art collector and philanthropist Donna MacMillan on the evening of February 11, 2016, a Hard Hat event for Idyllwild Arts’ soon-to-open Concert Hall, and the culminating 70th Anniversary Showcase in the LA Live District of Los Angeles on Saturday, April 16, 2016,” Jordan continued. The 70th Anniversary Student Showcase and VIP Backstage Pass Event will

take place in Los Angeles at The Figueroa presented by Microsoft, formerly known as Club Nokia, the venue of choice for such well-known artists as Postmodern Jukebox and The Roots. The evening will begin with a gallery exhibition featuring student and alumni artwork, performance art, and installations. This poignant display will be followed by an on-stage performance highlighting the talented dancers, musicians, and actors of Idyllwild Arts Academy. Attendees will experience first-hand why Arts Schools Network has bestowed Idyllwild Arts Academy with the distinguished 2016 Exemplary School Award. Nearly 100 students are slated to perform in the 75 minute showcase, with the entire student body present to witness and encourage their classmates’ performance on a world-class stage . . .an experience of a life time and one they will never forget.

The Student Showcase and Performance is free and open to the public, however, reservations are required. Proceeds from VIP ticket sales and sponsorships support the innovative educational and artistic programs of Idyllwild Arts. Proceeds will also support nearly 50% of the student body who rely on tuition assistance to attend the school. The community is always welcome to attend the other numerous events that take place in the pines of Idyllwild on the school’s 205 acre campus, 6,000 feet in the San Jacinto Mountains. “Idyllwild Arts is home to tomorrow’s leading global artists,” stated President Pamela Jordan. “We hope that you will visit us, and become inspired by our young artists who are poised to make a difference in the world,” she continued. That money will be used to pay out a contract with the police officer association, and to pay the higher rates coming in from the fire department. “After that we will probably be about flat financially, but we will be in the positive, not the negative,” Matas said. Matas also announced

the city will be going through a significant economical transformation, beginning with the possible opening of Walmart. The retail giant filed a petition that allows them to skip the planning process and start developing. “They’ll get at least 10 percent of Desert Hot Springs registered voters’ signatures, they’ll propose that ordinance to city council, city council will make a decision sometime this year,” he added. Some residents are optimistic

about Walmart opening in the city and support the idea. “I think anything that brings jobs to the city is a good idea,” Desert Hot Springs resident Bob Selan said. Another element Matas will continue to support, is bringing more medical marijuana dispensaries to town. He hopes his new plans about medical cannabis dispensaries turn Desert Hot Springs into a regional hub for the industry. As far as crime in the city,

it is down this year and city officials say they plan to keep it that way. In fact, Matas is thrilled about the city having its own police department for the next five years. Some residents believe that will result in an even safer city. “I think one of these days the criminal element in this city is going to get the idea that they’re up against something here and will move on,” Desert Hot Springs resident Michael Picardi said. By Desert Star Staff The risk of malpractice lawsuits is wreaking havoc on America’s healthcare system, giving rise to physicians practicing “defensive medicine,” according to researchers at USC, Harvard University and Stanford University. “Defensive medicine” is a phenomenon where doctors spend extra money and resources conducting tests and procedures for patients in hopes of reducing the likelihood they will be sued for malpractice. And it may work, because the research indicates doctors who use the approach are indeed less likely to be sued, a USC press release says. “ ‘Well, duh’ is the likely reaction from most physicians to this study,” says Dennis Hursh, an attorney who provides legal services to physicians and is the author of “The Final Hurdle: A Physician’s Guide to Negotiating a Fair Employment Agreement,”

(www.TheFinalHurdle.com). “This study validates what I’ve been hearing from my clients for almost 30 years – defensive medicine is absolutely required to protect physicians from an out-ofcontrol judicial system.” Hursh says the looming threat of lawsuits can compromise doctor-patient relationships. Here’s how: • Legal cover and medical benefit are often at odds. Physicians worried about lawsuits feel forced to order tests and procedures they know will be of marginal value. Gratuitous tests are expensive and may have potential risks, such as radiation if imaging is involved. And such tests can cause undue anxiety for patients. Many physicians would gladly forgo testing and procedures they feel are of little to no benefit if they didn’t have the threat of a lawsuit hanging over them for every

clinical decision they make. • Legal threats prove costly to doctors and may compromise performance. Doctors are ambitious people who might choose to move to a different practice for better pay and benefits. But when they change employers they have to worry about something called “tail” insurance coverage. That’s a policy that covers the physician for legal claims that arise after they leave their current position. Depending on the insurance policy the current employer carries, the physician may be covered automatically. If not, the doctor may need to buy coverage at premiums that could cost a third of the doctor’s annual salary. That could leave the doctor feeling trapped – not just financially, but emotionally, which could affect the doctor-patient relationship and overall performance. our physicians the freedom “We will never be able to to use their best clinical truly control costs until we give judgment in treating patients,

Victor/Victoria at the McCallum

By Jackie Devereaux Palm Desert, CA - If you like shows that are offbeat, edgy and have their fingers on the pulse of social issues, then “Victor/Victoria playing at the McCallum Theater April 28 – May 1, is just for you. This musical is about a woman pretending to be a man who’s pretending to be a woman. The theme questions the borders of sexuality in a complicated storyline revealed through the protagonist, Victoria Grant - a penniless soprano struggling to find work singing in Paris in the early 1930s. After Victoria is rejected by a jazz club, her gay friend gets the idea to pass her off as a drag queen, and she strikes gold. Victoria becomes wildly successful as Victor, and to everyone’s surprise, becomes the toast of Paris as s/he deals with the timely issues of gender identity, gender bending and hiding one’s true self. Complications quickly arise when one fateful night a Chicago mobster in the audience finds himself attracted to the star. The audience watches Victor/ Victoria journey through this musical odyssey first as a madcap misfit who must deal with her own inner struggles as an artist only to find herself dealing with the complexities

of a woman falling in love. Chelsey Clime, a desert native and College of the Desert (COD) alumni, was cast in the lead role of Victor/ Victoria. Her COD stage credits include Charity in “Sweet Charity, and Sister Sarah in “Guys and Dolls. Clime earned multiple Desert Theatre League awards performing leading roles in Shakespearean and musical comedies, and made her off-Broadway debut with The Living Theatre as an exalted angel in “Korach. She later appeared in the documentary film “Love and Politics, a Tribeca Film Festival selection. HOROSCOPES ARIES

A sense of being in alignment occurs this month for everyone, but especially you. As this occurs many unusual ideas appear in your mind. They are important, providing direction, stabilizing your actions and self-identity in the coming challenging times. Careful with groups. Stand tall and courageous and remember that anxiety is a state seeking more detailed information.

TAURUS You’re serving others which often disrupts your own personal schedule. Or perhaps you’re in retreat and behind the scenes which allows you to ponder, think and study the world events undistracted. Or you’re far away from home tending to a life and death situation or a medical emergency. Whatever the present journey love underlies all your actions and choices.

GEMINI Hurry and do all that’s needed to prepare for the Mars retrograde. Always you’re being prepared for something important. Perhaps it’s to dispel the illusions of others concerning what’s occurring on our planet now. As you slowly move back into a reflective state something’s happening to your sense of

intimacy and relationships. Steady yourself, poised at the center of what matters.

CANCER There’s a different communication occurring between you and the groups you interact with and/or belong to. Perhaps you will be recognized more or called to lead or a wish is fulfilled. New people enter your circle perhaps through a community interaction, a market, a calss or meet-up. Maintain your ethics and ideals as you adapt and compromise and plan for the future.

LEO Work continues to be a deep stabilizing influence and new ideas occur that develop new ways of relating to everyone professionally. It’s important to be especially in touch with your creativity. You are more than you think you are, more than most see and recognize. Careful with authority. Create a balance between discipline, structure, willingness and kindness. It equals Right Human Relations.

VIRGO Things religious and spiritual, questions concerning justice and journeys all come into your mind. You are greatly organized, tending well to

plans and agendas that affect daily life. Careful at home, with sharp knives, steps, tools, where you walk.. Be aware of each moment lest you fall and hurt yourself. When we learn new things, stumbling about is always our first step.

LIBRA Your heart fills up with love for another. When we love more sometimes wounds appear. Wounds have a purifying affect, bringing us to attention to what hurts most. What underground streams of thought are you having? Mars is uncovering wounds from long ago. Bring everything into the light of day for discussion. An old wound surfaces. It has to do with miscommunication. Forgive.

SCORPIO In your daily life it’s good at this time to listen carefully and agree with others, participating in their ideas, plans and agendas. This creates a magnetic emotional balance within you and all around you. You will be seen as wise, intelligent and caring. Cooperate, share, provide others with praise and attention. In the secret moments of your life, tend carefully to money and resources.

SAGITTARIUS

Something important now is you creating new methods and trainings at work, maintaining an ethical and just work environment, being the mentor everyone seeks. Also tend to physical, emotional and psychic health. Be sure to have sound financial advice. In odd moments remember to play a lot. Notice that what was previously a pleasure changes dramatically.

CAPRICORN It’s good every now and then to turn to our partner(s) (intimate, business, etc.) and renew commitments, intentions and vows. Bonds then deepen, trust too. A deep spiritual presence may appear in your mind, hear, dreams or visions. People may wonder what’s different about you, what is that light they see aroun you?” It’s the light of Goodwill emanating from you creating peace and goodness to all.

next. Each step lets you know you’re in control of your life.

PISCES You will ask yourself questions regarding life direction in life, work and in the world. The retrograde allows us to assess, reassess and re-evaluate our direction, aspirations and goals. Do not push the river in any way during the next three months. Tend to elders, parents, co-workers, mentors. Know there is no failure. There is only experiencing and learning. Know also that you are always a success. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.

AQUARIUS You will find yourself returning to friends and groups you’ve interacted with before. They have missed you. You’ll be out and about, doing what’s needed firmly and without distraction. A new base of operations is attempting to form but there are changes you must bring about first. List all things needed in your life. Then, take one step. Then the

Fury at GOP after Cruz handed ‘voterless victory’ in Colorado By Desert Star Staff Colorado’s process of electing GOP delegates drew condemnation from front-runner Donald Trump and voters alike, with some Republicans torching their registration cards after Ted Cruz received all the state delegates without a popular vote. Instead of a statewide primary, Colorado Republicans elected their delegates at a state convention on Saturday, following the precinct caucuses on March 1. The change, adopted last August by the state’s party leadership, put the selection process in the hands of “party insiders and activists” while leaving some 90 percent of Colorado’s million-plus Republicans on the sidelines, the Denver Post noted. “What kind of a system is this?” Trump told Fox News on Monday. “Now, I’m an outsider, and I came into the system and I’m winning the votes by millions of votes. But the system is rigged. It’s crooked.” Trump accused “phony politicians” of stealing the vote from the people of

Colorado and called the process “totally unfair.” Larry Lindsey, one Trump supporter who was turned back from the state convention, got so angry he posted a video on YouTube in which he set his Republican registration on fire. “You’ve had it. You’re done. You’re toast. Because I quit the party,” Lindsey said. “I’m voting for Trump, and to hell with the Republican Party.” “In the State of Colorado, you and I actually have no say at all, and no vote that counts, in any election, so long as this caucus system exists,” Lindsey explained on Facebook. Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s campaign worked behind the scenes in Colorado precincts to elect its supporters to the state convention, securing 17 delegates ahead of time, and getting the remaining 17 at the convention. The state’s remaining three delegates are unpledged party leaders. This has led the Drudge Report to declare Colorado a “voterless victory” for Cruz. Paul Manafort, a Republican strategist

recently hired by the Trump campaign as convention manager, admitted that the billionaire businessman neglected Colorado, writing it off as Cruz country. “I acknowledge that we weren’t playing in Colorado,” Manafort told The Hill. However, he criticized Cruz for buying and bullying voters at county conventions, in what he termed “gestapo tactics.” Cruz and his backers in the Republican establishment have shrugged off the criticism as Trump’s sour grapes. Their arguments April 13, 2016

were undermined by a tweet posted from the Colorado GOP account seconds after Cruz was announced the convention winner: “We did it. #NeverTrump” Colorado GOP chairman Steve House reportedly burst into the press booth a minute later and claimed their Twitter account had been hacked. The tweet was immediately deleted, but not before the media and many angry Trump backers had saved a screenshot. “There’s no way we tweeted that,” House told

Politico, while admitting that the party was responsible for removing the tweet. It takes 1,237 delegates to win the Republican presidential nomination. As of Monday, Cruz has 545 delegates to Trump’s 743. GOP insiders have already called for a “brokered convention” in July, where delegates pledged to candidates through primaries and caucuses would be free to switch their vote if no one gets the majority in the first round. www.desertstarweekly.com

Grantchester If you are a PBS fan, you know what wonderful variety this channel brings to television viewing from drama, music and nature to history. Right now they are presenting season two of “Grantchester” about life in a seemingly quiet English village where crime happens and Vicar Sidney Chambers and his agnostic pal Inspector Keating are there to make things right. If you have never watched this series, season one is available on DVD and Season two is now in progress on the air on Sunday nights. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, and Father’s Day following not far behind, you may want to treat mom and dad to a PBS DVD. Here are a few suggestions ranging from baseball and nature to the final season of that international hit “Downton Abbey.”

“Jackie Robinson,” a film

by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon is currently airing on television, but it is also available to own and would make a great gift even if mom or dad isn’t a baseball fan. The DVD features intimate and riveting interviews with Robinson’s family and rarely seen photographs and film footage. In this two-part, fourhour documentary, we see how Robinson rose from humble origins to cross baseball’s color line and become one of the most beloved men in America. It wasn’t easy for this American icon, but his lifelong battle for first class citizenship for all African-Americans transcends even his remarkable athletic achievements. Throughout his life, he used his immense fame to speak out against the discrimination he saw on and off the field. At times, he angered fans, the press and even teammates who had once celebrated him for

“turning the other cheek.” After his baseball career ended, he became a widely read newspaper columnist, political activist and tireless advocate for civil rights who later struggled to remain relevant as diabetes crippled

his body and a new generation of leaders set a more militant course for the civil rights movement. The documentary runs for approximately 240 minutes on two discs and contains special feature that include a conversation with the filmmakers.

Now, what would a “B” movie be like without a daring rescue? So, a slightly wounded Banning declares that the president will not die under his watch and in the tradition of the heroic Dudley Do-Right, he springs into action vowing that the president’s head will remain where it is – squarely on his shoulders. With the help of just about anyone carrying a rifle or machine gun, he penetrates the hiding place. The evil guy, Gerard Butler as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning kills one of the bad guys. For example, some of the amusing ones made in the 1950s include: “The Giant Claw,” “The Blob,” “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms,” “It Came From Beneath the Sea,” “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” and the quintessential “B” film “House on Haunted Hill” starring Vincent Price at his “scariest” best, and the special effects at their goofiest worst. These films were good for laughs and yelling at the screen. So in “London Has Fallen,” you have pedestrian dialogue, and some hokey acting, which will keep you laughing. However, as I think about it, though, back in the 1950s movie tickets ranged from $.41 to $.47 vs. today, which start at around $8.70. So, maybe wait for the movie to be offered on VOD** and sit back with a bowl of popcorn and have some fun. *CGI: Computer Generated Images **VOD: Video on Demand

How to Create a Cash Stash for Unexpected Expenses

By Desert Star Staff April is Financial Literacy Month, a time dedicated to teaching Americans how to establish and maintain good financial habits. The month provides a good opportunity to assess whether you have a solid plan in place to support your financial goals -- and that means planning for emergency expenses, too. The best time to plan for unexpected expenses is well before they happen. One strategy to consider is to open an emergency savings account where you can stash cash specifically for unexpected expenses or short-term savings goals. That way, you can avoid having to pay for these expenses with a credit card and incur interest. Regardless of your financial circumstances, a rainy day fund offers peace of mind and, if you plan well, it won’t derail your other long-term savings goals. To get one started, consider the following tips from Ally

Financial Inc., which offers personal finance tips, tools and education through its Wallet Wise financial literacy program: • Create an account specifically for emergencies: Many make the mistake of assuming that a standard savings account can also serve as a rainy day fund. However, dipping into savings when your roof leaks, may not be the best solution. Start an account that’s only purpose is for emergencies. Some banks, such as Ally Bank, will allow you to create “nicknames” for the accounts to reinforce their purpose. • Specify amount to be allocated: Set a goal for your fund that could cover most emergencies with a little extra to spare. (Some plumbing repairs can easily run close to $1,000.) Determine how much you would realistically need if an emergency were to arise. Set up a recurring transfer or direct deposit to

automate savings. If money is tight, decide where you’ll cut corners to make your plan work. For example, directing $30 a paycheck to a rainy day fund in lieu of going out for dinner one night will help plan for the future. • Fee free is the way to be: Maximize your savings potential by finding a bank that won’t charge you a monthly maintenance fee, or penalize you for dipping into your emergency fund. Better yet, an account that earns a competitive interest rate or one that is compounded daily will allow your emergency fund to grow faster on its own. • Ensure you can access funds: Many Money Market Accounts come with checks or a debit card to ensure quick access to funds, because emergencies usually don’t happen at convenient times. The benefits of such accounts allow you to pay a locksmith, plumber or roofer directly without

needing to run to the bank. Why add an additional step to a stressful situation? For additional tips on what you need to know to be smart with your money, visit allywalletwise.com. Everyone is going to face a

situation where an emergency strains their budget. You don’t leave home in the rain without an umbrella, so don’t take on life without the same safety net. A rainy day fund is a smart way to guard against financial stress. StatePoint

Warrant: Ex-Saints player Will Smith was shot in back, torso

(Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office via AP). This Sunday, April 10, 2016 photo provided by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office shows Cardell Hayes. Police say Hayes has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of former New Orleans Saints Will Smith.

(AP Photo/David Goldman, File). FILE - In this Dec. 27, 2010, file photo, New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith (91) celebrates a 17-14 win over the Atlanta Falcons in an NFL football game in Atlanta.

By Janet McConnaughey NEW ORLEANS (AP) Former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith was killed in a case of road-rage, by a Humvee-driving man who rear-ended his Mercedes and then shot him in the back and side, according to a police warrant read in court. Cardell Hayes, 28, was ordered held on $1 million bond Sunday night after police arrested him on a charge of second-degree murder. Smith, 34, was beloved by fans for helping the Saints win the 2009 Super Bowl, and for remaining in the community with his wife, Racquel, and their three children as New Orleans recovered from Hurricane Katrina. He had been enjoying a street festival Saturday, posting a photo of himself and his wife on Twitter and Instagram with the caption: “Having a blast at the #fqf2016 @ French Quarter Fest.” At about 11:30 Saturday night in the upscale Lower Garden District, Hayes’ Humvee H2 rear-ended Smith’s Mercedes G63, pushing it into a Chevrolet Impala occupied by two of Smith’s acquaintances.

Hayes and Smith argued, and Hayes shot both Smith and Smith’s wife, Racquel, police said. She was taken to a hospital with a leg wound. The accident that police said touched off the deadly confrontation was the second within moments, defense attorney John Fuller explained outside the courthouse. He said Hayes ran into the back of Smith’s Mercedes while following a hit-and-run driver who had rear-ended his Humvee and sped off. Fuller wouldn’t say whether Hayes identified the Mercedes as the vehicle that had rear-ended him. Hayes is not guilty of murder, and the story is more complex than the police account, Fuller said. He said Hayes called 911 after he was hit, and persuaded a witness who was about to leave to remain and talk to police. Police spokesman Tyler Gamble told The Associated Press in an email Sunday that he had no immediate information about the witness or the 911 call. Fuller asked for low bond Sunday night, noting that Hayes had waited for police, owns a towing business and

is raising his 5-year-old son. Magistrate Brigid Collins said she understood, but according to the warrant, “I’ve also got a gentleman who was shot in the back.” Prosecutors have 60 days to decide whether to bring the second-degree murder charge against Hayes, who had a hearing scheduled Monday to inform the magistrate’s court of his permanent attorney. Fuller, who represented him Sunday, said someone else from his law firm will represent Hayes because he’s been appointed as a temporary judge starting May 2. Hayes and Smith didn’t know each other, Fuller said, but like the NFL star, Hayes played defense, competing last year with the semipro Kings. The team offered condolences to Smith’s family and friends, and praised him as an example of the city’s “overwhelming kindness and generosity.” “We are stunned and saddened by this senseless tragedy. The Crescent City Kings do not enable or condone violence in any shape, form, or fashion,” the team’s Facebook post said. Hayes is big, but mild, Fuller said Sunday: “He’s

actually a lot nicer than he appears. He’s soft-spoken, easily approachable.” Online court records show Hayes pleaded guilty in 2014 to possessing an illegal weapon and drug paraphernalia. The gun Hayes carried Saturday was legal, Fuller said, noting that police didn’t accuse him of any weapons charge. Gamble said the gun hadn’t been reported stolen, but tracing its actual history takes more time. Hayes sued the New Orleans Police Department and six officers after police killed his father in 2005. Police settled the lawsuit in 2011. The settlement is confidential, said attorney Ike Spears, who represented Hayes in that lawsuit. Smith was a standout player. A native of Queens, New York, played for Ohio State’s 2002 national championship team and graduated in 2005 with a degree in criminology. New Orleans chose him in the first round of the 2004 draft, and he led the Saints with a career-high 13 sacks in 2009. Smith’s 67 ½ career sacks rank fourth in Saints

history. The New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame says Smith had been unanimously voted into the hall last month. Smith also was at the center of the NFL’s bounty probe in 2012, the last year he played in an NFL regular season game. The league concluded that he and fellow defensive captain Jonathan Vilma helped run a locker-room pool that paid cash bonuses for heavy and even injurious hits. Smith successfully appealed a four-game suspension, though coach Sean Payton was suspended the entire 2012 season. A year earlier, Smith served a two-game suspension for using a weight-loss product that included a diuretic banned by the league for masking steroid use. Off the field, Smith established a foundation “to motivate, educate and provide opportunities for women and children.” The Smith family said in a statement Sunday that they are thankful for the outpouring of support but want privacy as they grieve. By Desert Star Staff CALEXICO, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico Station arrested two previously deported convicted sex offenders last night in two separate events. The first arrest occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m., when Border Patrol agents apprehended a 27-yearold man 25 miles east of the Calexico West Port of Entry, after he illegally entered the United States. Border Patrol agents conducted records checks that revealed that the man is a previously removed sex offender and member of the Sureno prison gang.

The second arrest occurred around 9:40 p.m. when a Border Patrol agent arrested a 33-yearold man, after illegally entering the United States near Mount Signal. The man’s record checks revealed that he has an active warrant for lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under the age of 13. The men, both citizens of Mexico, will be turned over the custody of the Imperial County jail. One man will be prosecuted for his illegal reentry as a prior removed felon/ sex offender and the other awaits extradition to Santa Ana for his active warrant.

“I am proud of the work accomplished by my agents,” said Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott, “these two dangerous men are off our streets and are no longer a danger to the members of our community.” In fiscal year 2015, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested 8 convicted sex offenders attempting to re-enter the United States after removal. The El Centro Sector’s Community Awareness Campaign is a simple and effective program to raise public awareness on the indicators of crime and other threats. We encourage public and private sector employees

to remain vigilant and play a key role in keeping our country safe. Please report

any suspicious activity to the Border Community Threat Hotline at 1-800-901-2003.

How to Make Mother’s Day More Meaningful this Year

By Desert Star Staff Gifts and flowers are a nice way to show mom you care on Mother’s Day. But this year, consider adding deeper meaning to the holiday (which falls on May 8) with these ideas: Volunteer Together: After breakfast in bed is wrapped up, spend the day working sideby-side with your mom on a local volunteer project. Whether you take advantage of the spring weather and participate in a park clean-up, or you serve lunch at a local soup kitchen, you and your mom will enjoy quality time together, while also feeling good about helping the community. Gifts that Give Back:

DesertSTAR

You could forego a tangible gift altogether and instead make a donation in your Mom’s name to charity. Here’s one worthy cause: There are 153 million orphans worldwide, according to UNICEF, many of whom lack basics like food, water, education and medical care. “In honor of Mother’s Day, consider paying tribute to your mother by helping provide a mom to those who don’t have one,” says Caroline Boudreaux, founder of The Miracle Foundation, a non-profit that improves the way orphanages are run, funded and managed. The international charity is currently raising funds to pay

the annual salaries and room and board of housemothers working in orphanages in India. Each housemother acts as a mom to 20 orphaned children in her care, creating a nurturing environment

where they can thrive. To honor your own mother or another special woman in your life, consider visiting miraclefoundation.org/ mothers to learn more about the campaign and to make a tax-deductible donation. Use Your Talent: Do you sing? Are you a writer or artist? Give your mother a unique creation. From water-colored paintings to a novella starring Mom as the heroine, you can make Mother’s Day extra special by gifting something homemade and one-of-a-kind. If your talents don’t lie in the creative realm, a note to your mom expressing love and appreciation for all that she’s done for you is a great standin for a store-bought card. Whatever you decide to do for Mom this Mother’s Day, consider celebrating a little differently. While Mom should still take center stage, you can add a lot more meaning to the holiday by thinking outside the box. StatePoint

Locals Cash In On Coachella

By Julie Buehler INDIO, Ca. -The wait is nearly over, Coachella begins Friday with people pouring into the Coachella Valley. Some here, to spend money, and those here, making it. Music fans look forward to Coachella and Stagecoach and so do local entrepreneurs. And with websites like AirBNB and Craigslist, connecting the hundreds of thousands of visitors flooding Indio with locals looking to use their vehicle, knowledge of the area, and their own home, to make some money. The cost of a hotel in the Coachella Valley at the beginning of this week, the prices on the low end of the spectrum range between $60-$70. Adjust the days for the end of the week? Those prices quadruple. And it makes sense. As economist Michael Bracken says, “Approximately 273,000 people will visit the valley to go to one

of the 3 concerts.” With hotels booking up, locals offer those hundreds of thousands of visitors a chance to stay in their own home. Looking to stay at the Bing Crosby estate? It’s available. You’ll just need some $31,000 dollars. Other homes from around the Coachella Valley, both basic and luxury, are posted online for visitors to enjoy while in town for next few weekends. While Craigslist requires caution, as users tell KMIR there are a lot of scams on this website, it’s also an easy way to post a listing. AirBNB.com offers locals another site to offer their entire home, or just a single room for rent. With anywhere from a few hundred to many thousands of dollars exchanging hands. Other resourceful locals take to Craigslist to offer rides. Morgan Heard says he’s going into his 5th year as a driver. “Number One, it helps

with DUIs.” Heard said. “So people can be at the festival, have fun and not have to worry about getting back to their hotel.” And the thousands he earns for the few days helps in many ways. “My mother has late stage Alzheimer and every year I look forward

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Pope Francis got the attention on Friday of the nearly one in five Washingtonians who practice the Roman Catholic faith with the release of a document called “Amoris Laetitia,” or “The Joy of Love.” In the document, Francis asks priests and bishops to be more lenient of people who have divorced and are looking to remarry. However, Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA, a Catholic organization committed to LGBT equality, says she isn’t pleased with the pope’s message that same sex marriage is not equal to other kinds of marriage. “There’s no recognition of the value of our relationships, no sense of grace that can be in them, and it talks about families having LGBT members as essentially having to deal with a burden,” she points out.

Francis released “The Joy of Love” – his second exhortation since becoming pope – after meeting with the world’s Catholic bishops last October. Duddy-Burke maintains there is a widening gap between what Catholics believe and the leaders of the Church teach when it comes to LGBT rights. However, she says there are a growing number of leaders who are open to changes in order to be more accepting. “If they continue to listen and if more bishops agree to enter into dialogue and really listen to our experiences, I think that’s where the change will come from,” she states. The release of this document has coincided with battles in U.S. states over LGBT rights. Last week, Mississippi signed into law a religious freedom bill that allows organizations not to serve members of the

LGBT community. In response, Washington

to this because as you know Alzheimer is a very expensive disease, so this really helps me with that.” Heard says while he’s learned a lot over the years, it’s been a positive experience. “They are fun people. They’re fun taking them,” Heard says. “Coming back they’re a little rowdy, but I’ve never had any problems, I’ve had great people, we’re remained

friends over the years.” Heard also pointed to using common sense and protecting yourself if you choose to rent your home or provide services. And to stay up to date with road closures, and key information for locals and tourists a like. Just text Coachella to 888777 and you’ll get the latest directly from Indio police. Source: KMIR
