Cabazon Indio Pow Wow Grand entry. Photo by Pat Krause
Hundreds of tribal members from many states and Canada gathered at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The thirty fourth annual Cabazon Indio Pow Wow was sponsored by the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians. The event was held at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Spa Special Events Center on November 27th thru the 29th. Hundreds of tribal members traveled from long distances to attend this gathering.
Families came from Mn, ND, AZ, NM, many more states and Canada. The Pow Wow is always held during the Thanksgiving Holiday. There were dancers, bird singers, drummers for spectators that were given free access to the many highlights of the Pow Wow. There is always a Grand Entry every day where dancers enter the floor to dance to the host drummers, Bad Medicine.

It may be the largest donation the charity has received anywhere in the US. The couple, who have chosen to remain unnamed, dropped the check in a distinctive red Salvation Army
pot in front of a grocery store in Rosemount, Minnesota, about 20 miles south of Minneapolis. “The check did clear and was deposited in the bank,” said spokesperson Julie Borgen, declining to identify the mystery benefactors. “They feel very strongly about the gift being anonymous.” It was the largest single

Pow Wow activities include bird singing and drummers from different tribes that vie for prizes and honors. Dancers also are chosen in the many categories where prizes are awarded. There is the Golden Age +60, Senior Men Adult-40-59, Junior Adult men, 18-39 and Teen boys ages 13 to 17 and Junior Boys ages 7 to 12. Prizes range from $1000
down to $50 for winners. Women’s categories are similar to the Men’s but they have Traditional and Jingle Dances. The little ones, Tiny Tots, are under 6 years old but have already learned many of the dances and their meanings. The singing contests are a big thing in the Pow Wow and prizes are large for the singers. Tribal women are Bird Singers
and they tell of the struggles by the people thru dance and song. The dances show a symbolic way of life and a way of passing down traditions to the young ones but also to educate nontribal members who come to watch. They tell how the animals guide them and the birds lead them. The Men’s Fancy Dance Continues on Page 11
Christmas tree lightening at The Living Desert
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Living Desert kicked off their Holiday Wildlights on Monday November 25th. This is the 23rd year of the Living Desert’s H.N. Frances C. Berger Foundation’s extravaganza of lights. The presenting sponsor is Indian Wells. This gives everyone a chance to enjoy the sights of the Holiday Season and lets families bring their children to see this million light display. They will be on display until the end of the year. Guests arriving at the gate of the Living Desert are treated to a display of colored lights at the entrance. Guests walk thru a colorful lighted walkway to the path to the main gate. Almost a million lights greeted hundreds of people and children that came to see the Christmas tree lighted by Mayor Ty Peabody who pulled the switch. Guests gathered around the tree and the children’s eyes lit up when the lights came on the tall tree filled with small animal toys and colored balls. Parents with children in strollers and little kids all dressed for cool weather marveled at the many displays. There is a butterfly tree with lights in the shape of butterflies. There is an area for lighted Palm Trees and
a blowup puppy to honor Hanukkah with a field of blue lights. Its always fun to walk thru the Tunnel of Lights as it changes colors every few minutes. The toy train display is lit up and everyone takes time to stop and see it all. The whole area is lit up with a myriad of lights in different designs like animals, golfers, Santa, and snowmen. Guests can walk the trails to see it all. The kids and parents liked to ride the trackless Jan Hawkins, Mayor Ty Peabody, and Ivy Lewis. The bonfires are a resting and peaceful place to warm up or just relax in the Palm Garden. Santa will be available nightly from November 26th thru December 24th for the kiddies. There is shopping at the Main Entrance where kids can buy lighted wands, sticks with stars and lighted headgear. Of course, there is always an area to see the animals in the amphitheatre with Wildlife Wonders, Animal/Dino Trackless Train. Photo by Pat Krause Encounters.

citing “developments abroad” and the downturn in China’s financial markets and economy. Zero interest rates destroy the savings function of capitalism, which is a necessary component of investment. Low interest rates always sound good, but in reality, they can damage the economy, and excessively low interest rates normally are considered predictive indicators of economic crisis. Low interest rates tend to cause a rise in asset prices and the cost of living. At the same time, they lower the return on fixed-income investments that provide income for retired individuals, foundations and other entities dependent on bond interest for income. They impact the cost of insurance and pension plans products, whose business in based on making interest to support the products they sell. Corporation could have brought more jobs to build a stronger economy, but they have not done so. Instead, corporations have benefited by borrowing at the prevailing low rates and investing trillions into their financial economy as they buy back, their own stock with a seemingly safe tax advantaged arbitrage. Quantitative Easing (printing more money, to stimulate our economy) has kept the economy artificially afloat. It has increased our debt, failed to create more jobs and has weakened our dollar. wants to leave his term in office. It will slow economic growth as well. The Fed is ill suited to tackle inflation, employment, and financial stability. We cannot continue to spend more money than we are producing. If interest rates increase, will stock and bond prices go down? Most certainly, however it ultimately leads to rejuvenated private investment, which is the essence of a healthy economy. The key problem many countries have is debt. perspective, if each person in our country paid off their portion, the costs would be $58,800. If we want to avoid a depression, we need to raise interest rates soon; otherwise, money will only be worth the paper that it is printed on. Some of what needs to change is clearer definitions of the responsibilities of Congress and the Fed. The Fed needs to tell Congress that it is not their role to fix our economic problems. When they do raise rates, it could cause a political backlash and they must be willing to accept a recession. This is not the way a President
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hello Mr. Richardson, Our HOA board is composed of 5 members, and is updating the CC&Rs and bylaws. The board created a committee composed of 3 board members who have met numerous times, and no owners were notified of these meetings. I called on the board to point out that these meetings were in violation of the “open meeting act” because there were 3 board members (a board majority) at these meetings. The board replied: “The Davis-Stirling website states that the ‘Brown Act’ does not apply to community associations. Community associations are regulated by the ‘Open Meeting
Dear C.W.: First, there is no official Davis-Stirling Act web site. There are various law firm web sites, including one which appropriated the name of the statute, but none of these, including www. hoahomefront.com, are official. The ONLY official law web site is www.leginfo.legislature.ca.gov. Second, the Brown Act has nothing to do with HOAs - that is a law regarding public entities, and HOAs are private. The Open Meeting Act applies to homeowner associations. Third, the Open Meeting Act can apply to committee meetings, if a majority of the board attends the meeting. Per Civil Code 4090(a): a “board meeting” is “a congregation, at the same time and place, of a sufficient number of directors to December 2, 2015
establish a quorum of the board, to hear, discuss, or deliberate upon any item of business that is within the authority of the board.” A committee meeting, if it includes the attendance of a quorum (in your case 3) of the board, becomes a “board meeting” and must fully comply with the Open Meeting Act. Many associations (and even some managers) have not caught up with the expanded definition of “board meeting,” which is somewhat recent (2011’s SB 563 became law in 2012). Your HOA should not have a quorum of the board in any committee, not only because it becomes a “board meeting” but also because you want committees to have mostly nondirector volunteers. Committees are one of the best training grounds for future directors. Thanks, Kelly Dear Kelly: Our HOA has drafted new CC&Rs. There is a section that states that in order for an owner to be able to rent his/her unit, they have to have lived in the unit for two years. Is this legal? B.E., San Pedro
Dear B.E.: Waiting times for an owner to rent are permissible in CC&Rs. Many associations prefer a waiting period of one year after taking ownership, to discourage non-resident (aka investor) buyers. The question is whether the waiting period applies to all owners, or only future owners. Associations can limit or even ban rentals, but Civil Code 4740 makes rental bans apply only to owners acquiring ownership after the ban is placed in effect. Civil Code 4740 applies to an amendments prohibiting the rental or leasing of a residence. I don’t think a waiting period is a “prohibition” under the statute, but the courts have not addressed this question. Thanks, Kelly Kelly G. California Worst in Nation on Homelessness
California is failing to provide shelter for two-thirds of its homeless population. Credit: Compass Family Services
By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO – California needs to do a much better job of caring for the homeless – because almost two-thirds are sleeping outside with no shelter, according to a new report from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. The annual report takes a snapshot in time – in this case, on one night in January of this year. Researchers found that California has 21 percent of the country’s homeless population, or almost 116,000 people. Jennifer Friedenbach, executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness of San Francisco, says California’s state government
has paid little attention to the problem. “We have very little investment by the state in this issue,” she maintains. “They fund a very tiny amount of money toward emergency shelter. “Our primary funding for housing, at least in San Francisco, was through redevelopment, which was eliminated.” A c ro s s t h e c o u n t r y, the number of individuals experiencing chronic homelessness declined by 31 percent, or almost 23,000 people, between 2010 and 2015. Friedenbach attributes that to a big federal push after the recession to find housing for homeless families with children. She says the state is being
shortsighted by leaving the problem up to cash-strapped cities and counties. “We’re spending much more money keeping people homeless because, of course, the health care costs have skyrocketed,” she states. “Human beings are not meant to live outdoors. Their health deteriorates, and so we incur large amounts of money in our health care system that would be much cheaper just to house people.” The study also found that the lion’s share of California’s homeless is in Los Angeles County, which has more than three times the homeless population of the Bay Area. Food Pantry Shelves will need restocking after harvest season By Desert Star Staff DENVER – As the days grow shorter and colder weather arrives, food pantry shelves across Colorado start to get pretty bare. Larry Martinez is deputy director of the poverty assistance organization Denver Inner City Parish, which runs a food bank on Wednesdays and Fridays. He says as families struggle with the cost of sending children to school, higher utility bills and putting holiday meals together, the number
of people in need of food increases. “ We’ll get an influx of donations of produce in the fall, during the harvest season,” he relates. “But around the end of November, around this time of the year, we see that begin to decline.” According to the Colorado Food Pantry Network, whether it is due to job loss, disability, or an unexpected financial challenge, one in seven Coloradans struggles to make ends meet and put food on the table. Martinez says food banks
play a critical role in making sure children don’t go to bed hungry and seniors don’t have to decide between buying food or medications. The Colorado Food Pantry Network, launched in September, is working to unite local pantries across the state in collaboration, sharing best practices and creating strategies to fill in the gaps from food procurement to distribution. Judy Barrow, executive director of Aurora Interfaith Community Services, says the network already is helping
connect the state’s emergency food centers. “ We’re sharing food, we’re sharing ideas of how to get food from farm to table to help the people that are in need,” she states. “And we need the brains to bring people together. Two and three people think better than one.” Barrow stresses food banks cannot work without public support, and is encouraging people to make donations. She says non-perishable foods, especially protein-rich items such as canned beans
and jars of peanut butter, are always a hit. Barrow adds some food banks also can accept fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, an area of emphasis as pantries work to keep communities not just fed, but healthy. Holiday Cheer Distribution Boxes Available Across the Valley By Desert Star Staff Shelter From The Storm, the Coachella Valley’s only shelter for battered women, and their children is accepting “Holiday Gifts” at a number of locations around the Coachella Valley. Gifts and useful items for children of all ages and moms (list attached) will be collected until December 9 in time for the shelter’s annual Client Holiday Party on December 11. Gifts will continue to be accepted through the “Christmas” Holiday for distribution during and shortly after the holiday. The current list of location accepting gifts is also attached. Executive Director Angelina Coe talks about the need this holiday in particular. “During the holidays, a time of joy, giving, and togetherness, to be away from family and friends is extremely difficult. It is even more devastating for the families that turn to Shelter From The Storm for services due to the dire life threatening abuse they are facing in their own homes. “SFTS with the assistance of the generous people in the Coachella Valley strives to make

the holidays merry and bright for all the families in our shelter and housing programs by providing them with new gifts and toys filled with holiday cheer. We are so grateful to have so many wonderful Coachella Valley locations assisting us with our annual toy and gift drive for the survivors of intimate partner domestic violence and their children, who are with us during the Christmas and Holiday Season. Their generosity truly demonstrates what the true meaning of the season is about and genuinely makes a difference in the lives of the children and families staying at SFTS during the holidays. We thank you and our clients thank you.” Shelter From The Storm was opened in 1993 with what is still the Coachella Valley’s only emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence. Recognizing that shelters are not for everyone and acutely aware of many unmet needs, SFTF made a commitment to create a continuum of services that would offer domestic violence victims the best possible chance to create safe and healthy lives.
Today SFTS has over 70 beds and five distinct service locations throughout the desert. Agency-wide we serve over 2000 women and children each year. All of the services are offered in Spanish as well as in English at no cost to survivors. The Emergency Shelter provides 60 days of refuge and a wide range of services including individual and group counseling, medical care, case management, and assistance with orders of protection for women and children who are often fleeing for their lives. To keep the children safe, on-site schooling is provided at the Shelter in either the pre-school or the K-12 school that opened in 2002. In 2000, SFTS opened the doors to the Community Counseling Center. The Center offers adult and child victims of abuse who are not in need of shelter -- services similar to those offered in the Shelter. Deadly Vehicle and Pedestrian Crashes in the Valley By KMIR News CATHEDRAL CITY -Cathedral City Police say in recent years there has been an unusually high amount of pedestrian and bicyclist deaths. 14-year-old Yary Alfaro is still recovering after a being struck by a vehicle more than a year ago. She wasn’t expected to survive. “My blood rushed to my feet, I was hysterical, I told my husband to go because my daughter had an accident, said Yary’s mother, Berta Espinosa. Yary was hit at the intersection of Date Palm and Victoria in Cathedral City. The 14-year old suffered a neck fracture, several dislocated vertebrae, a broken leg and the worst was the head injury.
They spent a month and a half at the children’s hospital in Loma Linda. “Well it’s been fast and slow same time, Berta Espinosa says her daughter Yary is walking and talking again, but she had to relearn everything. “She started talking, and making sounds. I told her to make sounds like she was talking. Little by little she started making improvements, and then all of a sudden one day one word just came out, said Berta. While Yary is continuing to heal, others have not been as fortunate. “In the last year, involving bicycles and pedestrians there’s been 13 injury collision, and again three or four of those were fatal, said Sgt. Dane
Dickson with Cathedral City Police. Cathedral City Police say there have been a growing number of crashes involving pedestrians and vehicles in the valley. “I don’t have a reasonable explanation for that, but I can tell you there is a direct correlation between DUI arrests and reduction in fatalities and injury traffic collisions, said Sgt. Dickson. Police are trying to find solutions. They recently received a nearly $100,000 grant to help. “DUI saturation enforcement and also motorcycle safety. Pedestrian and bicycle safety and also it will be addressing distracted
driving, said Sgt. Dickson. Officers say in the crash that so severely injured Yary, alcohol was not involved, and no one was charged. The family has sued the driver, as well as Cathedral City and Riverside County. “We have done our investigation and feel the intersection where the accident occurred is confusing and is in dangerous condition of public property, said the attorney for the family, Esteban Valenzuela. They hope something is done so fewer people’s lives are destroyed in these type of crashes. “Just here today with this family, you can see the devastation its taken on Yary and and here family and
she survived, said Valenzuela. Meanwhile, Yary is back in school. “Before the accident she had advanced classes, she was studying French. She still has a lot of dreams and goals, said Berta. There was a time she wasn’t expected to survive, but Yary has made an amazing recovery. “I don’t really care about anything else, I’m alive, said Yary. Cathedral City Police say that since 2012 18 people have died on the roads in the city. That includes all types of crashes. If you want to help Yary’s family, they have an account set up at the Wells Fargo on Ramon Road in Cathedral City under the name “Yary C. Alfaro Espinosa. Source KMIR
By Desert Star Staff Storms in the US Midwest have claimed at least 14 lives as temperatures plunged below freezing point over the holiday weekend. Tens of thousands of homes have been left without electricity, while driving conditions are treacherous due to icy roads. A wintry storm system that has been moving through parts of the Great Plains and the Midwest since Thursday has brought extremely cold weather to the region. Eight people have lost their lives in Texas, with a further six dying in the state of Kansas. The icy conditions are also causing havoc for local residents. Some 78,000 people in parts of Oklahoma have been left without power after trees collapsed
onto power lines, according to Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. This has prompted the Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin to declare a state of emergency following the ice storm. She has stated that she hopes this will help to facilitate mutual aid for the state and to provide assistance for those who remain without power. The authorities are also warning people to take extra care when driving due to the icy conditions. “It’s a very dangerous situation when you get temperatures like that near freezing. The ice may look like it’s just water, said Alex Sosnowski, Accuweather senior meteorologist, as cited by AP. “The fact is when ice is near freezing, it’s much slipperier
than when it goes down near 20 degrees. The treacherous weather on the roads has been blamed for more than a dozen of the deaths to have occurred. Two teenage boys died on Friday on icy Kansas’s roads in Newton, a few miles north of Wichita, Corporal Tim Boese of the Harvey County Sheriff’s Department said on Saturday. Two more motorists were killed soon after when a semitruck jackknifed in nearby Andover, according to the Kansas Turnpike Authority, as cited by Reuters. While the northern parts of the Midwest are battling snow and ice, Texas has faced a different threat – flooding caused by torrential downpours. Moisture from tropical storm
Sandra and the Gulf of Mexico brought record-breaking rain and flooding to the Dallas-Fort Worth region over the holiday weekend. Texas has been saturated by rain this year, with more than 55 inches record, breaking the previous high
of 53 inches recorded in 1991. Experts on a strong El Nino, which has seen a warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean, are blaming the inclement weather. This has subsequently had a knock-on effect on weather patterns around the globe.
By Desert Star Staff What started off as a small ripple on Vasquez Canyon Road soon turned into a scene from a post-apocalyptic blockbuster: the asphalt torn, utility poles dangerously tilted. Local authorities were quick to close the road on November 19, attracting curious on-lookers as well as extreme sports daredevils. Despite danger warnings, skateboarders have used the
opportunity to explore the naturally made ramp, and one man was seen riding his dirt bike on the newly formed ripples. Officials with the Los Angeles Department of Public Works even took to Twitter to warn people away from the site as the landslide was still underway. CBS Los Angeles reported on Sunday that the road buckled over a 60-meter stretch, with some parts rising as high as 4.5 meters.
UCLA Professor Jeremy Boyce told the media that it was unclear what had caused the phenomenon. “There was no big rainstorm that triggered this. There was no
big earthquake that triggered this, Boyce said. The road sits on private property and efforts to contact the owner are still ongoing. “Everything is being looked
into because nothing is obvious. There’s no indication that seismic activity had anything to do with it, Steve Frasher, a spokesperson with the LA Department of Public Works, said.

World’s Largest Menorah on Fifth Avenue
By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, -- The World’s Largest Chanukah Menorah will be proudly standing at New York’s most fashionable plaza, Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, by Central Park, between the Plaza and the Pierre Hotels. The first candle will be lighted on Sunday evening December 6, and the full Menorah will be lighted on Sunday evening December 13. All weekday lightings are at 5:30 PM. Over the years New York City Mayors, Abraham Beame, Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, Governors Mario Cuomo, George Pataki and David Paterson, United States Senators Jacob Javits and Charles Schumer, as well as many other dignitaries lighted the World’s Largest Menorah. “The Menorah stands as a symbol of freedom and democracy, strength and inspiration, delivering a timely and poignant message to each person on an individual basis,” said Rabbi Shmuel M. ‘Keystone’ Pipeline to Prosperity By Sean McGarvey With a message of economic populism, presidential contenders from both parties are fighting for votes from the middle class. “Far too many Americans live on the edge of economic ruin. They see only a small portion of the population riding the economy’s ‘up’ escalator,” noted Jeb Bush. In her campaign announcement, Hillary Clinton said, “the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top. Everyday Americans need a champion.” These are lofty sentiments. But unless a candidate supports the sorts of jobs that are key to middle-class livelihoods, such words are simply rhetoric. That’s why every candidate needs to support infrastructure jobs in the energy sector. Consider President Obama’s recent rejection of Keystone XL. The proposed 1,700-mile pipeline would have transported crude oil from western Canada to the Gulf www.desertstarweekly.com
of Mexico. According to the U.S. State Department, Keystone XL would have created 42,000 jobs. It would have also produced an additional 20,000 manufacturing positions, plus 118,000 spin off jobs generated by the supply chain necessary to complete the pipeline. The federal government studied Keystone XL for seven years for every conceivable pitfall, and consistently found the pipeline to be environmentally sound. But that didn’t stop green radicals with no regard for middle-class jobs from blocking its construction. And it certainly didn’t stop the president from catering to these environmentalists’ agenda. But the endless delay and recent rejection of Keystone XL is just the best-known casualty of this fanaticism. Numerous other job-creating pipeline projects are also languishing because activists have prioritized their rhetoric over America’s economic well-being.
For example, the Sandpiper pipeline would move oil from North Dakota to Minnesota and Wisconsin and create 1,500 jobs. The Constitution pipeline would transport gas between New York and Pennsylvania, creating 1,300 jobs. Yet both have been delayed and continue to face opposition despite being cleared by state and federal regulatory agencies. Opponents of infrastructure jobs often argue that such positions are “temporary” and somehow insignificant. Apart from the strange notion that we should turn our noses up at any good-paying job, this line of reasoning shows a fundamental misunderstanding, likely the conceit of those who have never made a living using their hands. Throughout their working lives, construction professionals work on numerous jobs in numerous locations. There are no “permanent” construction projects. Workers finish one job and then move on to the next. December 2, 2015

Along the way, they cultivate skills and build a career. Pipeline projects also provide a fertile training ground for new workers. Through apprenticeship programs, unions use such projects to put people on the road to the middle class. Pro-energy policies are proprosperity policies. Indeed, a new study by Wood McKenzie found that energy friendly policies would produce 2.3 million new jobs by 2035. If candidates are serious about helping the middle class, they must make supporting energy infrastructure projects a central part of their plans. Sean McGarvey is president of North America s Building Trades Unions, an alliance of 14 national and international unions in the building and construction industry that represent 3 million skilled craft professionals in the U.S. and Canada.

By Desert Star Staff ATLANTA, -- ‘Twas the holiday season, when all across the U.S., parents and children alike were busy getting in good deeds – within reason – in time to make Santa’s “nice” list. And to give folks a treat for their good behavior, Santa has teamed up with Great American Cookies® – his favorite brand of cookies – to give away a free original chocolate chip cookie to customers who stop by participating stores on National Cookie Day on Friday, December 4. To further spread cheer, Great American Cookies is also giving away $1,000 in gift cards throughout December to parents who submit their funniest family photos with Santa. To enter the contest, parents can post photos of their not-so-happy campers sitting on Santa’s lap using the hashtag #keepsantajolly. Weekly winners will be chosen to receive a $250 Great American Cookies gift card to sweeten up this year’s holiday celebrations. “Great American Cookies knows that the holiday season can be a bit stressful, making it a challenge sometimes for both children and parents to be on their best behavior. For the second year in a row, we’ve teamed up with Santa to give
cookies in a variety of flavors, it’s no wonder the holidays is one of the biggest times of the year for Great American Cookies. At each holiday you capture its essential beauty. A question. Is your heart missing someone?
SCORPIO For the next several weeks you sense a light shining within and upon you. You will feel lucky, capable, resourceful, emotionally supported and prosperous. Don’t run out, however, and buy everything you fancy, anything that baubles brightly. Unless it’s for a loved one. Most appreciated would be the offering of your heart. Even if it’s to a friend. We think of you as internal, hidden, watchful, reserved. You can give (and be) more now.
SAGITTARIUS All parts of you are active, energetic, hopeful. You shine in this season. Careful of being quick to anger or impatience. You’re more assertive, daring and bold like a warrior. Therefore, be careful with everything – communicating, driving, walking running, using tools, implements. Careful too of things red, hot and sharp (all of which, to some, you are). You’re laughing. That’s good. Caution.
CAPRICORN Mars is in your 10th house (of the world). It’s good to be out and about. People will see, recognize and be attracted to your fiery energy. You want to feel independent, purposeful, successful and creative. There is another side. You may be a bit weary, needing major nutrients and extra rest. Use half your time to draw back. You can still plan and create goals. However, act upon them slowly. Make health, rest, and well-being your central focus.
This is the belief that all you need will be given in right timing. When things fall down, don’t fall with them. Stand tall. Don’t worry about money. You will always have enough.
PISCES You become more public, more of your leadership qualities are emerging. Something new is occurring with your gifts of communication, intelligence and knowledge. You’re preparing for something. As certain things dissolve away, you remain hopeful, patient, accepting, while also wary, cautious, circumspect, careful and coiled like a snake. Out of the wound a new creative gift comes forth. FILM Disney. Pixar’s ‘The Good Dinosaur’ is Dino-Might BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Disney. Pixar films have been delighting family audiences for twenty years with wonderful stories ranging from the “Toy Story” trilogy and “Monster’s Inc.” to “Inside Out” which will surely garner an Oscar nomination. Now they have added another charming tale to their list of winners--”The Good Dinosaur.” What is particularly special about Pixar animated films is the fact that they not only please children, they appeal even more to adults. Now, with their latest animated treasure “The Good Dinosaur,” Pixar has done it again since dinosaurs capture everyone’s imagination and probably always will. Another plus is the intriguing new twist the writers use to tell their story about these magnificent beasts. What if the asteroid of countless millions of years ago missed planet earth completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct. In “the Good Dinosaur,” that is what happens. As the story begins, countless millions of years have passed and dinosaurs are now highly evolved. They even tend crops and herd cattle. At this point in time, it is man who is just starting to evolve. Director Peter Sohn worked on the story line for “The Good Dinosaur” with screenwriter Meg Le Fauve and other writers. In the process they created a story that will intrigue screen buffs since there are elements of countless screen plots from
westerns and buddy movies to road trip adventures and “a boy and his dog” stories. In this case, the feral little human boy named Spot is the canine substitute. The writers also unobtrusively tuck in life lessons about friendship, overcoming fears and the importance of family. The story centers on an Apatosaurus family with three young offspring. Arlo, a very timid dinosaur, wants to be like his father but is fearful of everything including the chickens on their farm. Being vegetarian by nature Arlo’s family is probably raising the birds for their eggs only. Arlo wants to be brave like his sister and brother and he especially wants to please his father. As in the “Lion King” dad tries to help his son become fearless and
unafraid. In one visually beautiful scene the duo, go out into the pitch-black night. As they walk out into the darkness, the father swings his massive tail back and forth in the tall grass and thousands of fireflies light up the night sky, creating visual magic. Spoiler alert, when dad is swept away, like the father in “The Lion King,” Arlo finds himself out in the wilderness and on his own. It is a point that the growling little feisty human joins up with tall, but terribly timid Arlo. What happens next is often very funny, sometimes touching and truly unique, like their encounter with a trio of T-rex ranchers who is herd has been stolen by a band of raptors. Another plus is the visually stunning animation throughout.
Particularly amazing is the recreation of the landscape from prairie lands and mountains to raging rivers that rush past and carry Arlo away from his home. The film is rated PG for action and peril that might scare very small children.

The wizard of paws brings hope and love to 288 pets
All dressed up for the 7th Annual Super Pet Adoption Festival at Palm Desert Civic Center Park.
By Pam Price The 7th Annual Super Pet Adoption Festival on November 14 and 15 held at Palm Desert Civic Center ark organized by Loving All Animals was a resounding success thanks to the participation of 40 animal welfare groups. “It was the best ever, best venue, best participation, best weather and best number of adoptions. It was heartwarming to know that over 300 animals that were in the cold shelter cages on Friday slept in warm loving homes on Sunday,” said Lindi Biggi, the founder of Loving all Animals. “The Palm Desert officials
were a delight to work with far exceeding our expectations, they seemed emotionally involved with our success. We were blessed with having Mayor Susan Marie Weber, Sheryl Benoit , supporter of Loving all Animals and 358 teen volunteers from Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Cathedral City, Indio , La Quinta, Palm Valley High Schools and Raymond Cree Middle School.” There were representatives from the U.S. Marines based in Twenty Nine Palms and Cathedral City High School ROTC Air Force Cadets. Biggi added “ anything and everything that makes us a “No kill

Coachella Valley is important.” Lynne Lockwood, on the Loving all Animals Staff, reported that one of adopted pets, “Snowdrift” was already happily adjusting to her new ‘forever’ home. Lockwood said the new parents called Loving All Animals saying Snowdrift was “the love of their lives”. They did reveal Snowdrift was frightened at first but by the next day she was on their laps and happily at rest. Stories such as this poured in after the events that were heartwarming for all concerned. Yet, “the need for pet adoptions continues,” said Biggi. “We have been dumbed
down to accept the massive killing of innocent animals simply because we lack space to house them.” That is changing with organizations such as “Loving All Animals” taking action, in this case placing 288 pets with people who care. Seen at the event were ardent supporters of pet adoption Rocky Randall, animal advocate, David Parker of the Body Deli, Jock Johnson, Morongo Valley’s Fire Department Chief and Anthony Grant, who was captivated by a friendly white cockatoo, named Big Bird comfortably perched on his
owner’s shoulder. Big Bird was a hit as he proudly flaunted his lavish white plumage to a group of admirers repeating quickly, “I am a pretty bird!” It was one of many unexpected moments making The “Wizard of Paws” a cherished desert event since it was established in 2008. Loving All Animals is a Non— Profit 501 (c) (3) organization. For further Information www. loving all animals.com or call 760-840-7000. Pam Price contributes to www.desertpetcompanion.

Robolights Display Shines in Palm Springs By Carlos Herrera PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -It’s that time of the year when the holiday decorations are going up. A local artist is getting a lot of recognition for going all out. It’s usually a world of robots, but during the holidays it becomes a Christmas light extravaganza. It’s called Robolights and it’s in Palm Springs. “It’s the most cosmic creative spectacular crazy thing I’ve ever seen,” Robolights visitor Scot Alpert, said. A place that reimagines art and Christmas. It’s a two-acre home that is decorated with millions of twinkling lights, holiday themed inflatable’s, carousels and other peculiar even an Easter bunny riding Santa’s sled? Yeah, in the creator’s mind everything’s possible. “We live in a why why why world, but of course at Robolights it’s a why not world in a why world, so everything that is here is like why not? That’s the way I see
it,” the creator of Robolights and artist of the many sculptures that decorate it, Kenny Irwin Jr. said. Irwin has dedicated more than 29 years to turn his father’s two-acre home into his very own canvas. According to Irwin, the statues, robots, and creatures fill his mind and live at his home. “Basically it’s my own home made art park, and I’ve put a lot of passion and energy into it and I get the biggest thrill out of seeing people enjoy it,” Irwin said, Robolights has attracted thousands of visitors. Irwin says he hopes this year is not an exception. According to Irwin , one of the most important things about his creations are that they’re made of recyclable items. Irwin has built on nearly every square foot of the property, but the catch is everything you see here is made from old appliances, lawn furniture or donated scraps. “It’s kept junk out of landfills that
otherwise would have been poisoning bodies. Instead, its art that everybody can enjoy,” Irwin said. Irwin works on his art and
what he calls his imagination, for 350 days a year, 10 to 12 hours a day. His own world of robots, of aliens or whatever his world is made up of. According to
him, the truth is, he will continue building sculptures as long as his mind has a world of its own and as long as his father’s home has enough room. Source KMIR
told reporters on Monday. Malley was previously involved in the successful negotiations with Iran concerning Tehran’s nuclear program. Tightening the VWP was one of the measures proposed by Democratic lawmakers in response to recent terror attacks. However, the House of Representatives has adopted a Republican-proposed bill instead, demanding additional security screening of Syrian refugees who plan to settle in the US. Some of the measures announced on Monday will require Congress to act, such as a proposal to raise the fines for airlines that fail to verify travelers’ passport data under the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) from $5,000 to $50,000. Meanwhile, the US Customs and Border Protection (CPB) division of DHS is negotiating with airports in Belgium, Japan, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom – all countries participating in the visa waiver program – to add Preclearance facilities, where CBP officers would screen travelers and their luggage before they even embark on airplanes bound for the US.
many Trojan supporters believed this would be a lost season. But the team rebounded behind interim head coach Clay Helton and scored 20 unanswered points in the 2nd half to blow open the game and take the Pac-12 South.
White House tightens visa waiver program, appoints new ‘ISIL adviser’
By Desert Star Staff The Obama administration has announced stricter regulations for 20 million travelers from countries in its visa waiver program, and appointed a new adviser to deal with Islamic State militants to bolster security following the terror attacks in Paris. Citizens of the 38 nations participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) will now be screened for past travel to countries the US considers
terrorist safe havens, the White House has said. The US government will also move up the deadline for all VWP travelers to begin using passports with embedded security chips and seek to establish customs checkpoints in seven VWP countries, where passengers and their baggage could be inspected before entering the US. The most recent State Department report on countries considered to be terrorist havens by the US, dated 2014,
lists Somalia, Mali, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Columbia, and Venezuela. Syria is notably absent from the list. Under the new White House initiative, the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will regularly identify and review terrorist safe havens, keeping the information up to date for the purpose of traveler risk assessments. Though most of the countries
participating in the visa waiver program are in Europe, it also applies to Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan (also known as the Republic of China). The program allows citizens of participant countries to enter the US without a visa for stays of 90 days or less. “The visa-waiver program is a valuable tool to promote lawful trade and travel with our best foreign allies,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told reporters on Monday. “But, as many have noted, ISIL’s force consists of foreign terrorist fighters, including thousands from countries in the visa waiver program.” The measures come in the wake of terrorist acts in Paris, France. The Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attacks that left at least 130 dead and over 350 injured, and has promised to strike the US as well. In addition to the new visa regulations, White House spokesperson Josh Earnest announced the appointment of a new presidential adviser to deal with the fight against the Islamic State. That position will be entrusted to Rob Malley, Earnest

LA County Sheriff’s deputy investigated over sexual abuse allegations
By Desert Star Staff Several women are making similar accusations of sexual abuse against a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy who detained them. Deputy Herman Kreimann Jr. first faced allegations of sexual
misconduct in November 2013, when a female inmate at the Century Regional Detention Center said that she had been coerced into performing oral sex, according to the attorney’s memo published by the LA times. Investigators subsequently
uncovered similar accounts of sexual abuse of other female detainees by the deputy, according to a district attorney’s memo. Although he declined to comment on specific allegations, department spokesperson Commander Keith Swensson
said that male deputies are never supposed to be alone with female inmates in areas without security cameras, and that Kreimann is undergoing an investigation that could result in his dismissal. In addition to the additional allegation of oral sex, the deputy is being accused of exposing himself to another detainee and soliciting her oral sex, but she declined. On a separate occasion, the same inmate said that Kreimann implied that he would allow her to visit another inmate if she had sex with him. Another woman said that the deputy had groped her breast, and yet another woman said that Kreimann stopped her in a stairwell in February 2014 and fondled her. A fourth woman said that Kreimann asked her to show him her breasts. Investigators collected DNA samples from an attorney interview room where he is accused of having oral sex with inmates and found five semen samples, the Times reported.
One sample was linked to Kreimann, who was hired by the Sheriff’s Department, but the other four remain unidentified. Kreimann will be required to answer questions regarding the semen samples when he appears for disciplinary review, Swensson said. Under California law, police officers can be compelled to answer questions during administrative investigations. These allegations underscore how females in police custody can be uniquely vulnerable to sexual abuse, Esther Lim, jails project directors for the ACLU of Southern California, told the LA Times. She commended the sheriff’s investigation for making an effort to track down other female inmates who had contact with the deputy. “A lot of these women are very fearful of being retaliated against,” Lim said. “It’s definitely a population that is very, very vulnerable.”

The donors also said that as a young couple they had relied on discarded food from a grocery store to survive, and are now in a position to help others. “You get to a point in life where it’s time to take care of others, the way you were taken care of,” the couple said in a statement issued through the religious charity. Salvation Army is also lauding the generosity of a donor who goes by the name St. Grand, whose identity is not even known to the
organization. The anonymous person – or group of people – has been dropping donations in Christmastime kettles in roughly $1,000 increments over the past 5 years. So far this year, St. Grand has donated $4,400 on four different occasions across the Twin Cities area. The $500,000 gift has brought Twin Cities Salvation army to a total of $2.2 million of their $11.6 million goal. Salvation Army spokeswoman Annette Bauer said that the donation was “astonishing” and helped close a half-million-dollar gap compared to what had been raised by this time last year, according to ABC News. Poll: California Desert National Monuments
By Desert Star Staff San Bernardino, CA – Vet Voice Foundation today released a poll commissioned to understand Californians’ perspectives on proposed desert national monuments, participation in outdoors recreation activities, and attitudes towards mining on public lands in the California desert. Conducted by Republican polling firm Public Opinion Strategies, the survey reveals overwhelming support among California voters statewide and in the desert region for President Obama to designate the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains National Monuments. “This poll shows clear support among Californians statewide and in the desert region for the proposed desert national monuments,” said Lori Weigel, Partner, and Public Opinion Strategies. “Voters want the President to protect these lands as important habitat for wildlife and so that families and children have places to get outdoors and explore nature. This support is broad-based and cuts across many demographics.” Among the poll’s key findings are the following: · Three-quarters of California voters (75 percent) support the President designating three National Monuments in the California desert, with comparable levels of support among residents in the desert region itself (70 percent).
· Californians express a strong affinity for the outdoors by reporting high rates of participation in outdoors recreation activities and visitation of national public lands. · Voters reject opposition arguments to the national monuments as well as an alternative proposal that would allow mining on these lands. In August, Senator Feinstein called on President Obama to designate three new national monuments in the California desert, building on years of effort to pass legislation that would protect these places. National monument status means that these public lands would be permanently protected and accessible for the public to enjoy for outdoor recreation activities. “ Ve t e r a n s want to see these desert lands permanently protected as national monuments,” said Steve Dunwoody, California Program Director, Vet Voice Foundation. “With this poll, we see that an overwhelming majority of Californians join us in that sentiment. We encourage President Obama to listen to this support and designate the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains National Monuments.” Overwhelming Support for California Desert National Monuments The survey results show that voters both statewide and in the desert region overwhelmingly (75
percent statewide and 70 percent in the desert region) support the President designating the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains National Monuments, thereby protecting these areas from development, mining and other resources extraction activities. Support is significant among all demographic, geographic and partisan sub-groups in the state. In fact, a majority of all key subgroups statewide express support, including 72 percent of Latinos and 73 percent of military and veteran households. Notably, support is strongest among the one-in-five residents (21 percent statewide) who have heard something about the proposed national monument designations, with fully 81 percent expressing support for the idea. Of these voters, a significant 59 percent are strongly in support. Strong Affinity for the Outdoors and Public Lands Voters offered a wide range of rationales when queried about the reasons for their strong support for the proposed desert national monuments. Most voters, however, focused on outdoor recreation and a sense that the land, wildlife, and natural resources need to be protected for future generations. These sentiments may in part be due to Californians’ high levels of participation in outdoor recreation activities and visitation of national public lands. More than three-quarters statewide
(78 percent) and in the desert region (77 percent) say they have visited public lands in the last year. Notably, Republican voters are more likely to say they have visited national public lands than their Independent or Democratic counterparts. In addition, the overwhelming majority of voters in the state report regularly participating in at least one outdoor recreation activity (74 percent statewide and 70 percent in the desert region). Hiking and camping are the leading activities, both statewide and in the desert region. Voters also see a widerange of benefits to increasing protections for desert public lands, particularly as wildlife habitat, and for family recreation and children to explore nature. 80% of voters consider opportunities for children to get outside in nature and protecting animal habitat as extremely and very important. Voters Reject Opposition Arguments and Oppose
Mining on Desert Public Lands The poll also reveals that voters are more likely to side with supporters of national monument designation for the desert areas than they are with critics of such a plan. Hearing rationales both for and against the monument proposal does little to affect how voters perceive this idea; after listening to this information 78 percent of statewide voters and 75 percent of desert voters support the national monument designations. Finally, it is worth noting that voters solidly reject a proposal to allow mining on these public lands. Two-thirds say they oppose a proposal to “allow new mining operations on 100,000 acres of existing public lands in the area” (67 percent statewide and 66 percent in the desert region). Fewer than one-in-four support this proposal. More information about the poll may be found at http://www. vetvoicefoundation.org/
How to Give Smart on Giving Tuesday By Desert Star Staff Now that the excitement of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is winding down, the focus Tuesday will be on charitable causes. Giving Tuesday is a day when North Dakotans are asked to think about giving to strangers who are less fortunate. Annette B a u e r, a spokeswoman for Salvation Army Northern Division, says as part of Giving Tuesday, her group is kicking off a new Internet campaign to make donating easier. “We’re really doing this push called Give Christmas Away, an opportunity for people to just make an online gift saying, ‘I have all I need for Christmas, I’m going to give my Christmas away. I don’t need anything,’” she explains. Bauer says with the new campaign, anyone who wants to donate can create and then share his or her personal donor webpage. In lieu of gifts for that person, friends and family can go to that page and donate money, which Bauer says will go towards “holiday meals, toys and basic necessities” for local people and families.
But if you are in the giving mood this Tuesday, oneconsumer watchdog groups is warning people to be aware of charity scammers. Dan Hendrickson, communications coordinator for Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota, says not every group is as trustworthy as the Salvation Army. “Giving Tuesday is a great thing,” he stresses. “It kind of harnesses the power of social media to highlight charitable giving and the good works people do. “We’re still saying it’s important to do your research. Go to give.org, have an understanding of the charity’s operations, how they use the money they raised.” The Better Business Bureau lists the Salvation Army as an accredited charity, because it discloses all of its financial information. Hendrickson says when charities do not do that; it could be a red flag for potential donors. Source: Public News Service

Kirk Douglas Theatre premieres new comedy play
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Plays can have hidden agendas, veiled or guarded plot points, and various twists on the endings. Usually, it’s a device to keep the narrative text from tipping off the audience before the playwright has made his or her case as to how the play will end. Tradition has followed the linear format – beginning, middle, and end – for a couple of hundred years. Audiences long ago embraced this format. It’s familiar, comfortable and satisfying. However, when a play comes along by a playwright with a purposeful agenda to test and challenge audience perceptions, almost daring them figure out what is taking place on-stage well then, you must be watching a play by Korean-born but American raised and educated New York City-based Young Jean Lee, a veteran playwright with an east coast following. This is her first linear written play, and it’s one with lots to think about when it comes to a family of four straight white men living in the Midwest. As Ms. Lee explained to a group of theatre-goers prior to the performance, she wanted to shake up and force the audience out of its comfort zone with this play. During the previews of “Straight White Men”, a comedy with deceptive dramatic undertones, audience feedback revealed that audiences had a difficult time understanding what the play was about even though they had just witnessed it. Most playwrights and directors would be worried as to the longevity of a production after hearing such comments.
For Ms. Lee who is both the playwright and the director it was music to her ears. Part of her plan for the play is to deconstruct whiteness in America and have the privileged ‘white class’ perform a mental self-awareness test. Changes are coming in 21st century American society as rainbow coalitions and multiracial and multi-culturalism become the norm rather than the exception. Ms. Lee’s story is set in the Midwest at Christmas and revolves around retired, loving, and non-judgmental father Ed (Richard Riehle) and his three 30-something adult sons. Matt (Brian Slaten) is an introspective, PhD dropout who has been forced to move back and live with his father. Jake (Gary Wilmes) is the middle son and a successful banker, now divorced. Drew (Frank Boyd) is the youngest son and an earnest writer/academic professor who has gone through therapy and is now a champion of its precepts. There is nothing more zealous than a convert to anything, and Drew is determined to help Matt overcome whatever it is that’s troubling him regardless of whether he wants the help or not. He doesn’t. The boys always gather at Christmas time to be with their widowed father where all get to ham it up, tease one another and play the games of their youth as a way of diverting the boredom of the three day holiday. Matt is having the hardest time coming to grips in understanding his depression and who he is and how he fits in with society. How the four family members respond to these events is the guts of the story. Plays may be ‘the thing’, however, it’s the players that
L-R: Gary Wilmes, Frank Boyd and Brian Slaten. Photo by Craig Schwartz. bring order and clarity to the psychodrama unfolding on stage. As an ensemble piece, we are treated to four finely judged and nuanced performances by four talented actors, making it an exhilarating display of individual brilliance within a team format. In the third act, the story takes a more somber and highly emotional turn when Slaten as Matt and Riehle as Ed, have a powerful and poignant scene between father and son that is so simple and yet so heart-
wrenching, one feels this must be the cathartic moment the audience has been waiting for. But wait… (no spoiler alert here) there’s more great stuff to come. Even after seeing the play performed, it’s still too early to tell whether Ms. Lee will succeed in getting her coded message about the ‘real story’ of “Straight White Men” being accepted by mainstream audiences. Only time will tell. In the technical department, director Lee heads the creative
team of scenic designer David Evans Morris, lighting designer Christopher Kuhl, costume designer Enver Chakartash, and sound design by Chris Giarmo and Jaime McElhinney. The intriguing play is performed without an intermission. “Straight White Men” performs at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, and runs through December 20, 2015.
