Christmas at the Palm Springs Convention Center

Story and Photos by Pat Krause It was a Very Merry Christmas Day at the Palm Springs Convention Center for over 2000 children, adults and even seniors. Everyone was included in this special day. A delicious dinner of a roll, salad, green beans, turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy along with assorted pies was served by the many volunteers that chose to spend the day and be a part of this event. There was face painting, a magician show, free haircuts and of course a visit to Santa for the little ones. The line of children and their parents was long but the kids were each given a gift from Santa as they sat on his lap. Some of the littlest ones didn’t like Santa and cried but smiled when they were given a wrapped present. Over 1,600 gifts for the smaller children were handed out and another 400 went to the teens, those in-between 12 and adult. Volunteers handed out more than a hundred gifts to seniors as they sat to enjoy the meal. The smiles on the faces made everyone’s heart a little lighter and happier. The event is put on by

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Eisenhower Hospital and Sunnylands celebrated their anniversaries with a get together at Sunnylands on December 16th. Over one hundred people came to this private party. Champagne was served and valet parked the cars. Chairs were set up in the main lobby at Sunnylands. Geoffrey Cowan, President of the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands welcomed the guests and spoke about Sunnylands and how it became the Camp David of the West. The first celebrity couple to stay at Sunnylands was Mamie and President Ike Eisenhower. Presidents, Kings and Queens have all been guests at Sunnylands in the last 50 years. A proud tradition that is continued today with summits

being held by President Obama. Michael Landes, President of Eisenhower Medical Center Foundation, spoke about Geoffrey Cowan and how he has had such a major part of Sunnylands and is leaving to go to USC. Sunnylands and its staff will miss him. Jan Salta and Suzy Leprino are co-chairs of the upcoming 45th anniversary gala. They said they had hoped to get Lee Greenwood to perform but his price was more than they could afford so they held an open call for local talent to sing. Sarah Hagar was chosen and gave a solo performance for the audience singing Winter Wonderland. Anne Rowe, Director of Collectables and Exhibits read letters from President Eisenhower to the Annenberg’s that showed a friendship between them. The letters were

very interesting and showed something the public doesn’t get to see. The last speaker was Dr. Khoi Le, Cardiologist at Eisenhower. Le Spoke about the amazing strides that have been made in cardiac care in the last 20 years. They do about 600 procedures a year and pacemakers keep people alive a lot longer. He joked about how they thought he was too young when he came to work at Eisenhower and how proud he was of his parents who left Viet Nam with him as a boy and were in the audience. A reception with appetizers and drinks was held outside on the patio that overlooks the beautiful gardens of Sunnylands. Food was provided by The Kitchen for Exploring Foods. The night was a little chilly but there were heaters to keep everyone warm. December 30, 2015

By Janice Gough If there’s one overriding outlook for the financial markets in 2016 it’s this: Big gains are not expected. Many market strategists expect market volatility will rise in 2016, which, as always, poses a challenge for investors. Investors can manage increased volatility in several ways. The market could be more volatile in the first half of next year than this entire year. Volatility may be caused by different factors: Fed policy and uncertainties around that, the state of the European economy and effectiveness of QE, the dollar’s strength and living in a

“more uncertain and dangerous world. The weakness in oil markets is expected to continue though prices could hit bottom at some point, and the dollar is expected to remain strong though not quite as strong as it’s been relative to other major currencies. Commodities are saddled with enormous losses, especially in the energy sector. The change in U.S. monetary policy, following the Fred’s first rate hike in almost 10 years will color market performance not only in the U.S., but globally. Here are the some investment considerations for 2016 : 1. Buy Into QE — Favor Japanese & European Stocks Over U.S. Equities: Less than three months after the Fed slashed interest rates to near zero and adopted a massive asset buying program in December 2008, U.S. stocks hit bottom, then rose almost steadily, more than tripling in price by mid-May of this year, before retreating slightly. Now the central banks in Europe and Japan have adopted similar easy monetary policies, using quantitative easing and

near zero or negative rates to boost economic growth, which is also expected to buoy stock prices. Bank of America strategists expect that European stocks will return just 0% to 5% on a total return basis in 2016 compared with 11% to 14% for Japanese stocks and 6% to 8% for U.S. stocks.

2. Hedge Foreign Currency Exposure: The divergence in central bank policies will continue to play out in the currency markets, where the U.S. dollar is expected to remain strong relative to other currencies, though possibly not as strong as it has been. The Canadian dollar should see a rise in value. It is important for investors to consider currency risk more seriously. Returns could be eroded by dollar appreciation. 3. Favor U.S. Large-Cap Stocks Over Small and MidCap Stocks: During an aging economic cycle, like the one we’re experiencing now, largecap stocks tend to outperform small and mid-cap stocks over the six months and 12 months following a Fed rate increase.

That’s not surprising since largecap companies have greater access to capital when rates are rising. Investment bankers favors mega-cap stocks in the S&P 100 over the broader large-cap S&P 500 index. The institutional outlook for equities may not just be optimism for stocks so much as a commentary on the state of the lagging bond markets.

O w n Te c h a n d Biotech: Technology is the only sector showing “notable outperformance” relative to the broad market during the six months following a Fed rate hike and tech continues to show strength one year after the first hike. Technology will prove resilient in the face of rate hikes once again, supported by earnings potential, and increased spending on technology by companies trying to remain competitive in their own markets. Biotech, which straddles the tech and health care sectors, is another favorite among strategists for 2016. The biotech industry expects a 21% increase in earnings for, which is currently trading at 14 times earnings.

Because the funds collected by the committee are association funds, they are under the board’s jurisdiction and control. To p r e v e n t misunderstandings, boards should provide each committee a written charter, clearly specifying its responsibility and authority. This should include how funds are handled. Section 7212 references “committees of the board.” These less-common committees are created by the board as sub-committees composed entirely of directors. However, most committees are committees of the association. Rather than minutes, they make recommendations, which hopefully the board relies upon. 5. Buy a House or Homebuilder stocks: Now is an opportune time to buy a home, especially for those who want to lock in what will likely be the lowest rate on a fixed-rate mortgage for years to come. Those rates haven’t increased yet, but they eventually will unless the Fed reverses policy, which is not expected. The Fed’s new rate-rising regime will initially boost only short-term rates, affecting variable rate mortgages, but eventually rates will reset on long-term fixed rate mortgages. (The 30-year fixed rate mortgage prices off of the 10-year Treasury note.) Knowing that rates will rise will help push people off of that straddling position. At least early on that could be constructive for homebuilding stocks. The last time the Fed embarked on a new, tighter rate regime, in 2004, homebuilding stocks rallied 33%, followed by 25% gain the following year.

The action is approval or disapproval. The Open Meeting Act (Civil Code 4900-4955) applies to board meetings, not committee meetings. However, if a quorum of the board participates in a committee meeting, it has become a “board meeting” under the definition of Civil Code 4090, and all the requirements of board meetings then apply. Well-managed associations should have a record as to the architectural approvals given to each property, but those records are not included in the records subject to inspection under Civil Code 5200. Civil Code 5215(a)(5) (F) states that interior architectural plans are confidential and not to be produced. San Francisco cracks down on Justin Bieber graffiti By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 28, 2015 -- San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera is demanding the full cooperation of recording artist Justin Bieberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s record label and distribution company to identify and punish those responsible for a guerrilla marketing campaign that includes pervasive ads spraypainted on public sidewalks to promote Bieberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s album, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Purpose.â&#x20AC;? Herrera, who called the graffiti vandalism â&#x20AC;&#x153;illegal and actionableâ&#x20AC;? in a letter today to executives from Def Jam Records and Universal Music Group, vowed to â&#x20AC;&#x153;aggressively pursue all available penalties and costs from those responsible for lawless marketing tactics that intend to financially benefit your respective companies.â&#x20AC;? San Francisco Public Works has for weeks responded to neighborhood complaints about the stenciled ads, which have otherwise persisted undiminished through several rainstorms. Unlike other recent instances of illegal sidewalk advertising that was chalk-based, according to Herreraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s letter, the Bieber-related graffiti appears to have been applied with permanent spray paint. Such defiant guerrilla

marketing tactics have become an increasingly unwelcome sight to many San Francisco residents, according to their reactions on social media, in published news accounts, and in complaints to City officials. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Far more infuriating to the San Franciscans I hear from is commercially-sponsored graffiti vandalism,â&#x20AC;? Herrera wrote to Def Jam CEO Steve Bartels and Universal Music General Counsel and EVP Jeffrey Harleston. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This prohibited marketing practice illegally exploits our Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s walkable neighborhoods and robust tourism; intentionally creates visual distractions that pose risks to pedestrians on busy rights of way; and irresponsibly tells our youth that likeminded lawlessness and contempt for public property are condoned and encouraged by its beneficiariesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;including Mr. Bieber and the record labels that produce and promote him.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our sidewalks in San Francisco are not canvasses for corporate advertising, and we have made that clear. Yet these guerrilla marketers believe they are above the law when it comes to blighting our city and we will take a strong stand against them,â&#x20AC;? said San Francisco Public

Works Director Mohammed Nuru. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The definition of graffiti is tagging someone elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s property without permission, and they certainly did not have our permission to do this to our sidewalks.â&#x20AC;? In his letter today, Herrera noted that he is working with City leaders on legislation to â&#x20AC;&#x153;substantially enhance civil penaltiesâ&#x20AC;? for unlawful guerrilla marketing

San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin has already begun drafting the legislation, which will include input from Herreraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office and San Francisco Public Works. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Graffiti abatement and prevention are important aspects of protecting the quality of life in San Francisco neighborhoods,â&#x20AC;? said Peskin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unfortunately, current penalties for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;guerrilla marketingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; graffiti seem to reflect an acceptable cost of doing business by irresponsible companies competing for consumersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attention. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear that we need to enact tougher penalties to more effectively

discourage this practice. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m grateful to City Attorney Herreraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office and San Francisco Public Works for working with me to improve codes intended to keep our sidewalks and neighborhoods clean.â&#x20AC;? CA Latino Advocates File Civil Rights Claim over Medi-Cal

By Desert Star Staff California is violating the civil rights of Latinos by underfunding Medi-Cal, the state’s health-care program for low-income families and the disabled, according to a complaint filed in federal court this week. In the complaint, a coalition of Latino advocates argued that Medi-Cal reimbursement rates are so low that many doctors refuse to take it, which impedes access to health care. Catha Worthman, an attorney on the case, said the fact that almost two-thirds of Medi-Cal recipients are Latino makes this a civil rights issue that violates the equal protection clause of the Affordable Care Act. “You have a system that has been created which is separate and unequal in health care,” said Worthman, a partner with Feinberg, Jackson, Worthman and Wasow. “Access is inferior in Medi-Cal compared to the general population and the law requires that it be equal.”

One of the plaintiffs is a Los Angeles woman, Analilia Jimenez Perea, whose son has cerebral palsy. She said they had to wait a year and a half to find a neurologist who accepts MediCal. Right now, Worthman said, the Golden State only reimburses doctors who treat Medi-Cal patients about half of what the state pays for treating seniors on Medicare. “We’re seeking very particular remedies, which include raising the reimbursement rates,” she said. “So. While the case charges discrimination, the remedies would benefit everybody on Medi-Cal.” The complaint does not speculate how much it would cost California to raise reimbursement rates enough to convince more doctors to take Medi-Cal. The Office of Civil Rights, part of the federal Department of Health and Human Services, is expected to open an investigation.

California’s Minimum Hourly Wage Rises to $10 on Jan. 1 2016

By Desert Star Staff Tens of thousands of minimum-wage workers in California will be making an extra dollar an hour starting on Friday. The Golden State’s minimumwage increases from $9 to $10 an hour on Jan. 1. But labor advocates plan to continue their push for $15 an hour. Sean Wherley, senior communications specialist for the Service Employees International Union’s United Healthcare Workers West, said $10 just doesn’t cut it. “At $10 an hour, that’s less than $21,000 a year for a full-time worker,” he said. “That’s barely enough to cover for yourself,

much less if you have children. Particularly in coastal areas, but even throughout rural areas, that’s not enough to get by.” Two different branches of SEIU are promoting separate ballot measures next November. One would raise the hourly wage to $15 by 2020 and mandate six paid days off for illness. The other would raise the wage by the same amount by 2021. Critics of these measures have said they’d raise costs for small businesses and lead them to cut hours or jobs. Wherley countered that workers will have more money to spend, which benefits the economy overall. He said a statewide measure would

level the playing field between cities. “This is going to be uniformly applied, so no city can claim that one has an advantage over the other,” he said. “This is what is going to lift people into a better existence, one where they can provide for themselves and their families.” San Francisco and Los Angeles already have passed $15 minimum hourly wages that go into effect in 2018 and 2020, respectively. California Spending Far Too Little to Combat Smoking

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Anti-smoking advocates are pressing for a $2 a pack tobacco tax in the wake a recent report that says California is seriously shortchanging smoking cessation programs. The annual report from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, called Broken Promises to Our Children, monitors how states spend the billions of dollars from the tobacco settlement of 1998. It found that California spends $65.6 million a year, which is just 18 percent of what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommends. Jim Knox, vice president of government relations for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, says what’s worse is that money comes from the existing state tobacco tax, not from the tobacco settlement. www.desertstarweekly.com

At least 8 dead as wave of tornadoes rolls into north Texas

tornadoes have already hit the Dallas area, but that number is likely to grow. Officials in Garland had first confirmed the death of five people after one tornado hit

an intersection. Another three have been confirmed dead in Collin County, according to the Sherriff’s Office, as cited by CBS DFW. One infant died in Blue Ridge, and another two

people in Copeville; all as a result of the storms. The National Weather Service’s Anthony Bain said it is too early to know the extent of the damage, and more should be known about the situation in Texas after daybreak. The exact number of people injured remains unknown. “As of right now, we are still in the search and rescue mode. We still have some homes that have been demolished and not everyone in the homes has been accounted for,” Rowlett police spokesman Detective Cruz Hernandez said, according to the AP. Ripping through residential neighborhoods, the storms tore off roofs and uprooted trees, mangled vehicles, damaged power and gas lines, and sent debris flying along a 40-mile stretch running through Dallas from north to south. The Alabama tornado was first spotted in Birmingham and caused substantial damage, but no fatalities. Earlier, fourteen people were reported killed, along with dozens injured, by some two dozen tornadoes and uncharacteristic torrential rains that have hit Tennessee, Indiana, and Mississippi over the past few days, the latter state bearing the brunt.

Furious wildfire forces California evacuations, highway closures

By Desert Star Staff A wildfire in Southern California has forced the temporary closure of one of the main interstate highways, as well as mandatory evacuations in the area, which is threatened by the fast-spreading blaze ravishing hundreds of acres of land. The brush fire that engulfed some 1,200 acres on Solimar Beach near Ventura has resulted in the partial closing of the coastal 101 Freeway, which runs all the way to the Canadian border, on Saturday. As the fast-spreading inferno torched hillsides near the beach, mandatory evacuations were ordered. “Even if we do open up the roadways, it’s still not a contained fire,” Ventura County Fire Department Chief Norm

Plott told reporters. “It’s a very dynamic fire. We’re not quite out of the woods yet.” Cal Fire reported that the fire is 10 percent contained. More than 600 firefighters are battling the blaze that still poses a threat to oil, gas, power and railroads in the area. No deaths or injuries have so far been reported from the fire that started at around 11:00pm on Friday near the coastal city of Ventura. The fire that initially burned roughly 100 acres of land in the 3000 block of the West Pacific Coast Highway was soon spread by strong winds as high as 50 miles per hour. They’re part of a group called “My Tiny House Project LA” a movement to build stop-gap shelters that is now active in San Diego and Oakland. The structures are just big enough to lie down inside. They’re on wheels so they’re off the ground, and they feature a small window and a door that locks. Founder Elvis Summers places them wherever he can around town making a difference, one downand-out person at a time. “There’s human beings out there in the cold that need help. It’s the right thing to do,” says

A Very Tough Job for politicians today By Desert Star Staff You know who I feel sorry for? Today’s politicians. You’ll laugh at this, but hear me out. This is a very tough time to be a politician — whether running for office or trying to lead while holding office. The women and men who’ve undertaken to represent us face circumstances that make campaigning and governing unusually challenging right now. Not that they’ve ever been easy, at least in my lifetime. Our size, diversity, and multi-layered government structure; the number and complexity of the problems our political leaders face daily; and the divided politics of our time, which make settling on coherent policies especially challenging — all these combine to make being a politician in a representative democracy one of the most demanding jobs around. Several features of the current political landscape, however, give politics a sharper edge and make it far more difficult to navigate. For starters, our political discourse, from city councils to state legislatures to Congress, is less forgiving than it was a generation ago. Political opponents are no longer just people with whom we happen to disagree — they’re people who need to be shamed into silence. They can’t be trusted, they can’t be negotiated with, they’re selfserving and unpatriotic, and when they’re not incompetent, they’re scheming, ill-informed and illintentioned. This rhetoric is not just calculated demonization. The www.desertstarweekly.com

extent to which politicians today genuinely distrust the other side is something new in our politics. It makes progress on the issues of the day extremely complicated. This is exacerbated by politicians’ awareness that voters have lost confidence in our traditional political leadership and are searching hard for alternatives. You see this in the rise of candidates like Donald Trump on the right and Bernie Sanders on the left, who speak to voters who are looking for someone to express their anger and frustration. Why are Americans upset, and more willing than usual to rally to outlying candidates? I don’t think there’s any great mystery. For starters, we have a society that is deeply concerned about economic insecurity; as the Pew Research Center reported recently, the American middle class — for decades the stable anchor of economy and society — is in trouble and no longer in the majority. People are moving up, but most are not, and some are moving down. Small wonder that immigration causes so much concern. You can add to this the fear of terrorism and a deeply unsettled view of the major changes taking place in American society: the rise of big data and its attendant loss of privacy; the migration flows that whittle away at some communities while causing others to change unrecognizably from month to month; the tensions that diversity, arguments over gender, and

America today is an uneasy place, and we see this reflected in voters’ frustration and pessimism. With next year’s elections still almost a year away, voters are mostly just looking around. The skills we need in our political leaders, like the ability to approach those with whom they disagree with a measure of good will and openness to negotiation and compromise, are not held in high esteem by the voters or by the loudest voices in their own parties. It’s easy for a politician to pander to anger and frustration. It’s much harder to face a roomful of disparate opinions and forge a consensus behind a solution. Yet, that is precisely what many politicians recognize our country needs. They first came to our fair city of the angels in 1984 when Los Angeles hosted the Olympics. Since then the company has crafted countless touring shows as well as long running stationary shows in Las Vegas like “O,” “Mystere” and “Love,” a tribute to the Beatles. In “Kurios”, forty-six artists from fifteen different countries bring a dazzling Victorian erathemed extravaganza to life under the company’s famous blue and yellow big top now at Dodger Stadium. And while the acts are in the Cirque tradition of high-flying trapeze artists, acrobats and contortionists who seem to have no bones in their bodies, this whimsical confection

seems altogether new and reimagined. It opens as a train steams in through the center of the stage. At this point all sorts of performers, dressed in amazing costumes like that of Karl L. Ecuyer (Mr. Microcosmos) and the very teeny-tiny Mini Lili (Antanina Satura) step out and begin to dance, creating a festive mood that prepares us for all the amazing acts to follow. The opening alone is worth the price of admission. Michel Laprise, writer/ director, and the Cirque staff of designers and costumers have created a world of surprises as curios in the onstage cabinet of curiosities come to life. In Rola Bola, a balancing act that defies belief, a man dressed as an aviator perches atop all sorts of

rolling, moving objects without falling off. He then does it in the air above the stage on a suspended platform. The chair-balancing act takes on a new twist when the balancing act below is also performed in the air upside down creating a mirror image of what is happening below. In one segment, two performers leap and balance between two poles with romantic grace. Later a young girl rides in on a bicycle before being lifted into the air where she performs using her bike as support. And for laughs, there is a delightful clown who serves as master of ceremonies. He also performs several skits. In one, he introduces us to the most wonderful circus we will never see. He calls it “The Invisible Circus” and thanks to visuals showing the effects of

his movements, an unseen performer climbs up a ladder and leaps off a diving board. Next comes the lion you don’t see, but you do hear. The end result is not only clever, it is truly funny. The whole show is a visual treat featuring more than one hundred costumes and 426 props, more props than in any other Cirque show to date. And of course there is the imaginative music that accompanies all of the acts. “Kurios,” at Dodger Stadium,

Don Martin did the job as an interviewer in an Actors Studio Style. Martin asked the questions and Kazan answered with stories of her life in the entertainment world. Kazan said she was so happy to be back to CVRep and feels they are a great organization. Martin read her credits that were numerous, as Kazan has had an amazing career with many awards. Kazan has been in Broadway hits, famous movies and many TV shows. Kazan spoke about her early career as an understudy for Barbara Streisand and how she was told she would perform one show. She invited her whole family and friends only to be told she wasn’t going on after all. A few nights later, she was told

she would be going on but she was not supposed to call her family. She called her mother and her mother did. Kazan has a great sense of humor as most of her stories had a funny part that made the guests laugh and enjoy. year and what our new year’s resolutions will be. A lot of people told KMIR News they were not really sure what their New Year’s resolution was and some people

did take a few minutes to think about it. Sometimes we wonder, what if this year had gone differently? We also ask ourselves what if we

could have made those changes this year? Although for some that questions is easy to answer, for other it is difficult. Some would not actually change anything, because hey had a good year, “This 2015 was a great year for me in a lot of ways,” tourist Joan Bissel said. Other believed there is always room for improvement. “It actually is a good question to ask yourself because usually if you take time to think and reflect inside we can see yeah there’s things that I could change,” Bissel said. So, what exactly would people change? “I’ve been asked that question by a lot of people, by my wife,” tourist

Times Square on New Year’s to be ‘safest place in the world’ By Colleen Long and Jonathan Lemire NEW YORK (AP) - With the nation still jittery over shooting massacres in California and Paris, New York City officials sought to assure revelers Tuesday that the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square will be the safest place in the world - heavily secured by thousands of New York Police Department officers, including a new specialized counterterrorism unit. “Leave the worrying to the NYPD,” said James O’Neill, chief of the department. “People should feel safest this New

Year’s Eve because we’re there.” Police Commissioner William Bratton said there were no credible threats to the city ahead of the holiday. Yet officials also acknowledged that there were limits to what they could do to ensure security, especially outside the tightly controlled blocks at the heart of the celebration. In much of the city, the focus will be on fast responses to any emergency rather than preventive measures like security checkpoints. “The ability to protect everything all the time everywhere is not possible in any venue anywhere in the world,”

Bratton said Tuesday at a news conference in Times Square. About 1 million people are expected to pack the blocks around Times Square to watch the 11,875-pound Waterford crystal ball drop. Partygoers trying to get close enough to see and hear the musical acts that perform throughout the evening will be screened with hand-held metal detectors twice - once when they enter one of the 14 access points to the secure zone and once when they enter pens where they must stay lest they lose their spots. Outside that zone, revelers and vehicles can come and go as they please. Nearly 6,000 officers will be assigned to the festivities. Visitors will see heavily armed counterterrorism teams and bomb-sniffing dogs. Rooftop patrols and NYPD helicopters will keep an eye on the crowd, and plainclothes officers will blend in with revelers. Newly graduated officers will take part.

“On New Year’s Eve, the department will be out in force,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “There will be a tremendous number of officers you will see and many you won’t see.” The bomb squad and a unit specializing in chemical and biological threats will sweep hotels, theaters, construction sites and parking garages. They also will patrol the Times Square subway station, and certain exits will be blocked off. The NYPD will rely on a network of thousands of closed-circuit security cameras blanketing lower Manhattan, parts of midtown Manhattan and the subway system. About 20,000 smartphones were handed out to officers this year that will allow police to quickly transmit information on potential threats. “New Year’s Eve in New York City will be the safest place in the world to be,” said Chief James Waters, head of the counterterrorism unit. And this year, a specialized

counterterrorism unit of 500 highly trained officers will be deployed to respond to any emergency. The unit was first formed after attacks in January at the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Bratton said the department is constantly evolving based on new information as well as the recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California. When the clock strikes midnight and the ball drops, so will 1 ton of confetti scraps of paper with well wishes for the upcoming year. After the show, sanitation crews will get to work cleaning up from the celebration, working through the night to dispose of an estimated 50 tons of garbage, including confetti, party hats and other leftovers from the revelry. Chicago cop kills student & 55yo woman By Desert Star Staff A Chicago police officer, responding to a domestic disturbance call, shot and killed a 19-year-old student and his 55-year-old neighbor, a mother of five. The grieving mother of the teenager said she had been hoping to “get help” from police. The police were responding to a call from a man named Antonio LeGrier, who said that his son appeared to be a “little agitated” and had been trying to bust open the door of his bedroom in the middle of the night. But a neighbor said the teenager had been armed with a metal baseball bat. “Upon arrival, officers were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon, fatally wounding two individuals,” police confirmed in a statement, not releasing the officer’s name. Authorities said the matter remains under investigation. The second victim was a 55-year-old neighbor, Bettie Jones, who had been celebrating Christmas with more than a dozen family members, and was shot

“through the door,” according to her cousin. Jones had reportedly been asked to keep an eye out for the arrival of police. “How are you just going to fire through the door?” wondered the grieving family. There was a single bullet hole in the wooden door, according to Reuters, however details of the incident remain unclear. “You call for help and you lose someone… That has to stop,” Legrier’s mother Janet Cooksey said. She told local channel WLSTV that her son was “having a mental situation” and sometimes would “get loud, but not violent.” Antonio confirmed his son had emotional problems, but said that it didn’t warrant him getting shot and killed, AP reported. The incident follows a round of protests against Chicago police brutality, with more and more demonstrators calling for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s resignation and an investigation into his administration. Hundreds of people have been gathering on the streets of the city, claiming the police are

killing civilians instead of protecting them. Amid the protests, a Chicago police superintendent was forced to resign and the mayor created a special police accountability task force to review officers’ conduct. The latest incident is another case of the police overstepping their boundaries, Carl Dix from

the US Revolutionary Communist Party told RT. “To say that they were confronted with an armed individual so they had to shoot…a bystander?! That makes no sense,” Dix says. He insist that in a normal society trained law enforcement personnel should know how to deal with a suspect armed with

a baseball bat without killing him. “But in this society police get to kill someone like that, and then they get the benefit of the doubt when the question gets raised,” he added.

Patriotic Millionaires Report Widening Wealth Gap

the 400 richest Americans and the rest of the population. Chuck Collins, an heir to the Oscar Mayer fortune who co-authored the report with the Institute for Policy Studies, summarizes what they found. “Our main finding is that

wealth is getting much more concentrated in the hands of a few than we thought,” he said. “So, the wealthiest 20 people now have more wealth than the bottom half of the population, 152 million people.” Collins said it’s important for millionaires and billionaires to speak out against inequality and advocate for policies that can reverse what he calls “dangerous trends.” According to the report, the richest 100 households now hold as much wealth as the nation’s entire African-American population, and the top 186 people on Forbes magazine’s annual list of the wealthiest Americans own as much as all Latinos in the United States. While 11 members of the Forbes “Top 20” built successful companies or were shrewd investors, Collins said, nine made the list through inherited wealth. Because current policies favor the rich, he said, the United States is

at risk of becoming a nation with the kind of hereditary aristocracy that Americans fought a revolution to overthrow. The report said extreme inequality corrodes the democratic process, polarizes communities and impairs public health. “It undermines healthy economic activity and growth, and it erodes social mobility, the ability of people who are not born wealthy to have the opportunity to become wealthy,” Collins said. “These inequalities undermine the fundamental American dream.” The r e p o r t ’s recommendations to close the wealth gap include raising the minimum wage, limiting the influence of money in politics, shutting down offshore tax havens and taxing wealth from investments at the same rate workers pay on income. Alternative Cold and Flu Remedies to Try this Season

Today it’s thought that 70 percent of your immune system lies in your digestive tract, so many of these alternative healing methods rely on food for its curative properties. While some alternative treatments have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for efficacy, many people swear by them. If you are suffering this cold and flu season, incorporating these remedies into your get-well plan could be worth a shot. • In Japan: Hot green tea is poured over a crushed ume, which is an alkaline-rich Japanese pickled plum. Clinical studies show that it reduces the duration and the severity of fever, chills, fatigue, headache and body aches. It is recommended that you take it at the first sign of flu symptoms. • In China: A restorative dish is made from healing fritillaria bulbs (Chuan bei mu) and an Asian pear. The center of the pear is scooped out to form a bowl. A teaspoon of honey is mixed with fritillaria extract, which is then poured into the pear.
