Closing ‘GITMO’ By Desert Star Staff The Pentagon officially submitted to Congress a proposal to close the military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The plan refers to 13 unspecific prisons in the US where the government could transfer up to 60 detainees at a cost of $475 million. In his remarks from the Oval Office on Tuesday morning, President Barack Obama appealed to “a country committed to universal values” in order to close
Gitmo, which, he said, “does not advance our national security. It undermines it.” Obama said the prison is too expensive, and that terrorists like Al Qaeda and Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS/ISIL) use the facility in propaganda and recruitment efforts. He added that the prison harms US partners and allies. “Keeping this facility open is contrary to our values,” Obama said, calling it a “stain on our broader record” on human rights.
The transfer of 30 to 60 remaining detainees at Gitmo would be far cheaper ‒ as much as $85 million less ‒ than continuing to house them at Guantanamo Bay, an Obama administration official told news outlets on Tuesday. Prior to any closure of Gitmo, about 35 prisoners are expected to be transferred to accepting nations by the end of 2016. The plan includes mention of 13 possible prison sites to house remaining detainees, yet it does not endorse any particular facilities. Among
By Desert Star Staff A girl scout in the US city of Portland, Oregon showed some “business savvy” this week by selling her group’s iconic cookies outside a legal cannabis dispensary. Her aunt who may have tipped her off to a condition known as “the munchies” accompanied the girl. Normally, her actions could have earned her a “pioneer” or “hospitality” badge, but the organization
didn’t seem to support her. “The Girl Scouts organization said they don’t condone this, but it’s not against the rules,” said the girl’s aunt to KATU. A spokesperson from the Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington said in a statement they recommend that a minor does not sell cookies outside a premises they cannot enter without being accompanied by an adult. Still, we do have to
admire her for thinking outside the (cookie) box. The scout had a target of 35 boxes to sell and seemed to exceed it, even though there were lots of “special” cookies for sale inside. The dispensary didn’t seem to mind the temporary competition, encouraging their customers to support the scouts by buying “those delicious cookies we all know and love.”
the potential sites the White House has been mulling over are a navy brig in Charleston, South Carolina; the US Justice Department’s Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado; and another two facilities at the Army base in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas – the US Disciplinary Barracks and Midwest Joint Regional Corrections Facility. Obama said the US continues to defend a facility where “not a single verdict has been reached in those attacks.” He added that President George W. Bush, whose
administration opened the prison following the attacks of September 11, 2001, wanted to close Gitmo, and that shuttering the facility was a point of agreement between Obama and Senator John McCain, his opponent in the 2008 presidential race. Yet since he took office, Obama said politics have restricted closure of the detention center. He said the Pentagon plan is the best way to go forward, calling the US prison system the Continues on Page 11

Positives and Negatives of Using Robo-Advisors
By Janice Gough Roboadvisors are a class of financial adviser that provides portfolio management online with minimal human intervention. Many middle-class investors are under-advised or unable to obtain portfolio management services because of the minimums imposed on investable assets. Use of a roboadvisor enables consumers to have direct access to portfolio management tools, which allocates investments among all asset classes and rebalances their portfolio

incorporating the effects of the current market. Unfortunately, issues such as estate and retirement planning and cash-flow management, which are also an intricate part of financial planning are not addressed. Robo-advisors must be registered investment advisors, which are managed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In the U.S., Collectively, roboadvisors directly manage about $19 billion in assets. This is a 21% increase in assets under management, since July 2014, and a 65% since April 2014, according to a study by Corporate Insight. There’s no denying robo-advisors are gaining popularity, however there is a “robo-bubble” that’s bound to blow up. Poor risk tolerance and suitability exposes the robo- operator to the risk of expensive legal action or intervention, sanction from regulators and reputation damage. They
do not calculate accurate risk-tolerance, which leaves the robo-advisors at risk of recommending investments that are not suitable for their clients. The consumer, in turn, may not be allocated to the best investments for their needs. Not every shoe fits the same foot. Why don’t robo-advisors properly assess investors’ risk tolerance? The reason why this is important to do properly is, if you get the risk tolerance wrong, there’s a great likelihood that the portfolio won’t meet the client’s capacity to cope when the markets crash. What tends to happen, people tend to invest at the wrong time of the market or divest out at the wrong time. Most investors buy and sell ineffectively at the wrong times in the investment cycle largely because emotions influence their decision-making so they buy high and sell low. When you’re in the world of the Internet, everything’s
about quick. If there’s more than one extra step, you’re gone. To do risk tolerance properly, you have to ask a lot of good questions. Current risk tolerance and suitability solution uses 12 to 25 questions, which takes into account investors’ time horizons, capacity for loss, risk tolerance, knowledge of investments and investment experience. Automated investment management uses an on-line computer program, which often times, may only ask ‘What’s your risk tolerance? Low, average, or high? There’s no assistance through the process. Failed suitability is the primary problem with robo advice and may result in loss, rather than gain. Suitability is often seen as “a very minor thing” within the financial services industry. Most of financial services history is about product selling. In my many years in the industry, some advisors want to make a sale first,
rather than a sale that fits. The primary role of an advisor is to know everything possible about their client and their loved ones, their likes and dislikes, protection from medical catastrophes, protection for their descendents, proper insurance for protecting their assets, and retirement income planning and to advise tax efficient investment advice.

I and another other board member sent e-mails requesting [a recent] financial statement. We email and call the property manager office and get no response. What do we need to do to get this corrected. HELP! P.R., Rancho Cucamonga Dear P.R.: Boards are required to review certain financial information on at least a quarterly basis, under Civil Code 5500. Most midsize and larger associations review financial information on a monthly basis, but even the smallest associations must have a board meeting at least quarterly to review certain financial updates. Under this statute, boards should, at least every three months, review a current reconciliation of the association operating accounts and reserve accounts, a comparison of the operating and reserve income and expenses compared to the budget, and an income and expense statement. Association boards should regularly review further financial information, as may be recommended

Dear D.N.: In order to be defined as a “common interest development” falling under the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act, Civil Code 4200 says each owner must have a separate ownership interest of some type, mandatory membership or common area, and a recorded declaration. In your situation, if there is no recorded declaration binding all the properties together in some way, the association would not qualify as a common interest development (“CID”). That declaration may be called “covenants, conditions and restrictions” or simply “maintenance agreement” or something else, but must be an agreement

Bill to Fight Housing Discrimination Introduced in State Senate By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A bill to make it illegal for landlords to discriminate against people with Section 8 housing vouchers was introduced in the California state Senate on Tuesday. According to Senate Bill 10-53, by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, landlords could no longer reject potential tenants solely on their source of income or advertise that they don’t take Section 8. Richard Marcantonio, managing attorney with the law firm and advocacy group Public Advocates, said it often takes years for a family to get a federal housing voucher - and then it’s very difficult to find a place in a
clean, safe neighborhood that will accept it. “If they can use those vouchers at all, they can only use them in the same neighborhood where they already live,” he said. “And so there’s a real barrier to people having access to highopportunity neighborhoods.” Landlords still would still have the right to reject potential tenants based on credit and criminal history. They don’t have to accept Section 8, but if this bill passes, they could be named in a discrimination complaint if they use it as the sole reason to reject a tenant. Shamus Roller, executive director of the fair housing advocacy group Housing California, said research
shows that children who move to better neighborhoods have a much better shot at success in life. “In the end, this is really about opportunity for people that really want to move their families into neighborhoods where there are better school systems, make their family have a better life,” he said. “That is what this country is all about.” About 300,000 Californians receive Section 8 rental assistance. They contribute 30 percent of their income to the rent on a fair market value unit, and the federal government picks up the rest. A summary of SB 10-53 is online at nonprofithousing.org.

Juvenile Probation Split Considered for L.A. County
Juvenile-justice advocates are praising Los Angeles County supervisors, who decided this week to study creating a separate juvenile probation department. (Youth Justice Coalition) By Diana Hoppe, M.D. Advocates for juvenilejustice reform are hailing this week’s decision by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to study splitting the county
Probation Department into two agencies - one for adults and one for youth. At any time, there are 17,000 young people on probation in California, with 2,000 locked up in
juvenile hall or youth camps, although that number is down significantly in recent years. Kim McGill, organizer for the nonprofit Youth Justice Coalition, said she wants the new agency to be called
the Youth Development Department. She said it’s critical to redirect the focus away from punishment toward developing kids’ potential. “Since the population is down,” she said, “now is the time to close at least one of the juvenile halls and half of the camps, and move away from this addiction that we have in L.A. County to incarceration, and redirect those savings to the community.” McGill also would like to see better data collection and more diversion programs, and said a separate agency would do a better job of ensuring color-blind treatment for young people, 95 percent of whom are black and Latino. Nate Balis, director of the Juvenile Justice Strategy Group at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, said
the adult system, which he described as “very handsoff,” won’t help troubled kids turn their lives around. “The system ought to be connecting them to school, connecting them to positive peers, ensuring that family relationships are strengthened,” he said. “Access to positive supports and positive activities is just fundamentally different than what we would do for a 30-year-old.” The Los Angeles County Probation Department is the largest in the nation, with an $840 million budget. San Francisco County already has created a separate system for juveniles, and the new youth camps in Santa Clara County also have won praise from juvenile-justice advocates.
Oregon Lawmakers Pass Bill to Raise Minimum Wage By Desert Star Staff SALEM, Ore. - The Oregon House has joined the state Senate in passing a bill to raise the minimum wage for three different regions of Oregon over the next six years. By 2022, the hourly minimum wage would increase to $14.75 in the Portland metro area, $13.50 in midsized cities and $12.50 in rural areas. Gov. Kate Brown has promised to sign Senate Bill 1532. Rob Sisk, president of SEIU Local 503, said the legislation isn’t perfect but believes it’s a step in the right direction. “We really want to commend the governor

and the Legislature for standing up to what were really some powerful forces,” he said, “and in doing so, standing up for the welfare of workers on the bottom.” The bill passed the House narrowly, 32-26. Lawmakers had to suspend a discussion of the bill for about 20 minutes Thursday afternoon because the noise from protesters outside the House chamber was so loud. The bill’s main opposition came from Republicans who believe raising wages will hurt small businesses. Proponents contend that if workers are paid more, they’ll spend more in the local economy. Supporters also hope the six-year lead-in,
and different minimums to suit different regions of the state, will help businesses adjust to the change. Sisk said his union has talked with small-business owners who already have raised minimum wages for their employees, “and have both understood the benefit to their own business, but also had this good awareness of the need for workers to survive.” As 2016 began, 14 states implemented higher minimum wages. Some cities, including Seattle and San Francisco, are in the process of raising their minimum wage amounts to $15 an hour. Details of SB 1532 are online at olis.leg.state.or.us. February 24, 2016

Cal NORML Opposes State Tax on Medical Marijuana
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO – A bill to impose a new 15% state excise tax on retail purchases of medical marijuana has
been proposed in the California legislature (SB 987 by Sen. McGuire). The tax would be in addition to the current 7.5+% sales tax plus
under the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act (MMRSA), it is unwise and inappropriate to impose any new state tax on medical marijuana, says California NORML director Dale Gieringer. Many patient advocates regard any taxes on medicine as unjust in principle. The tax in SB 987 is modeled on a similar 15% tax that would be imposed on all marijuana purchases under the proposed AUMA (Adult Use of Marijuana Act) legalization initiative. “If AUMA passes, SB 897 is redundant and moot, says Gieringer, “If not, it will only encourage marijuana suppliers to move to the illegal, untaxed, unregulated adult use market. Proceeds of the tax would be divided between the general fund, local oversight agencies, state parks, drug and alcohol treatment programs, and
various local business taxes assessed by some localities. “At this time when providers already face burdensome new costs

McGuire said that the taxes are needed to compensate “communities that have long been paying the price of the negative effects of cultivation brought on by the ‘bad actors’ who destroy the environment and bring in crime. No other state imposes a comparable tax exclusively on medical marijuana, though several, including California, make it subject to the standard sales tax on retail items. “It is neither just nor appropriate to charge those who are doing their best to supply medicine legally to patients for the costs caused by illicit traffickers, remarks Gieringer. “We call on the legislature to reject taxation without legalization.

Colon Cancer Awareness Month: What to Know about Getting Tested
By Desert Star Staff March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and the perfect time to think about colon health. Unfortunately, less than half of people aged 50 and older get tested for colon cancer. But early detection can save lives. Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the US, yet it has a 90 percent cure rate when detected early, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). “We say the best screening is the one that actually gets done, says Dr. Judy Yee, professor and vice chair of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at University of California, San Francisco. CT Colonography (CTC) or “virtual colonoscopy -- a less invasive, safe and sedation-free alternative to the colonoscopy -- is increasing colorectal screening rates. CTC uses high-tech, lowdose X-rays to produce moving images of the colon, which doctors examine to detect colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps.
If you’re interested in avoiding a colonoscopy, but want to get the screening needed to verify your colorectal health, consider the following about CTC, an ACS recommended screening test: • Comprehensiveness: The exam can detect abnormalities outside of the colon, including earlystage cancers in the liver, kidney and lungs, and can pinpoint potentially dangerous conditions, like aneurysms. In this way, it serves as two or even more detection tests in one. • Accuracy: CTC is just as accurate as a colonoscopy for detecting clinically significant polyps and cancers; however, you don’t have to undergo sedation. There’s no need to take time off work or have someone drive you from the hospital. • Affordability: This exam costs a fraction of the price of a standard colonoscopy and is covered by several major insurers. Your insurance company can verify whether CTC is covered under your plan. • Non-Invasive: While a colonoscopy is the standard procedure, there is a small

MSWD board adopts new water/sewer rates
Public process concludes with unanimous vote for rate changes By Desert Star Staff Desert Hot Springs, Calif.,– The Mission Springs Water District (MSWD) Board of Directors has taken steps to secure the District’s longterm financial stability and address drought and regulatory impacts, voting to adopt new water and sewer rates at a public hearing held at the District’s headquarters on Tuesday evening. The Board’s decision included the approval of a fiveyear schedule of changes to the District’s water and sewer rates, as well as changes to the way rates are structured. The recommended rates, developed by an independent financial consultant, were designed to: treat customers in all classes equitably; encourage conservation and discourage water waste; cover the approximately $20 million in capital expenses necessary to comply with California’s new Chromium-6 regulations over the next six years; maintain aging water and sewer systems; and ensure that MSWD has the revenue to maintain
existing levels of service in light of state-mandated reductions in water sales. “We appreciated the public’s participation tonight,” said Nancy Wright, president of the MSWD Board of Directors. “The District recognizes the importance of using ratepayer dollars wisely. We have carefully considered the comments and concerns of the public over the span of a dozen meetings on this critical issue.” As a result of the Board’s decision, MSWD customers will see changes to both the fixed and variable components to their water costs. These changes will amount to an increase in water costs of about $0.53 for an average residential customer in the first year, and nearly 85 percent of residential customers will experience a change of about $3 or less per month in the first year. Residential sewer bills will increase by $5.69. Residential customers interested in seeing the impacts specific to their monthly bill can visit MSWDRates. com/bill-estimator/. MSWD’s extensive public
outreach process included work with a committee of community members, a series of public workshops and community presentations in both English and Spanish, a rates-specific website with a bill estimator tool, a dedicated rate telephone hotline, and numerous mailings to all customers, far exceeding the state’s required notification. The new rates will
take effect on March 1, 2016, with customers receiving their first bills the following month. MSWD is committed to working with its customers to encourage efficient water use and keep bills as low as possible. “Mission Springs Water District considers itself a community partner, and we are dedicated to serving our customers by ensuring that
our water meets new state and federal standards,” said Arden Wallum, general manager of MSWD. “While no one wants to raise water rates, ensuring that the water agency is financially stable will ensure that our citizens have access to safe and healthful water for generations to come.” For more information on the new rates and rate structure, visit MSWDRates.com.
right thing. And that was fundamentally contrary to what the government was trying to do,” he said, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper. Explaining his rationale behind the decision to leak highly classified intelligence documents, Snowden said he didn’t agree with some of his former co-workers’ argument that constitutional rights, including the Fourth Amendment, were no longer relevant in the wake of 9/11. With its gigantic wiretapping and surveillance capabilities, as well as data collection practices, the United States sets a controversial example to the rest of the world, Snowden warned. “We don’t want Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, or France or Germany or Brazil, or any other country in the world, to hold us up as an example
for why we are narrowing the boundaries of liberty rather than expanding them.” He also said that concealing private information from the prying eyes of government is justified and dates back to the founding fathers of the US. Benjamin Franklin created his own encryption systems, he said, “because he recognized that when great power has intensely detailed private information about the political activities of groups that are acting in manners that they would find inconvenient or burdensome.” Asked, why he doesn’t criticize Russia – accused by the West of “crackdowns” on the internet and media – Snowden replied he was trying to fix his country before trying to solve the problems of the rest of the world. “We’ve got to get our own house in order first,” he said.
Snowden: ‘I would return to US if fair trial guaranteed’
By Desert Star Staff Contractor-turnedwhistleblower Edward Snowden told the New Hampshire Liberty Forum on Saturday he would return to America if the government guaranteed him a fair trial and allowed the jury to distinguish between “right and wrong.” More than 400 people gathered in a conference room at the Radisson Center in New Hampshire on Saturday to hear former NSA contractor speak via Skype from Russia. Snowden announced he would return to the United States if a fair trial were conducted. “I’ve told the government

Snowden also said seeking asylum and staying in Russia was not his choice. Fleeing prosecution in the US, he planned to go to Iceland or Latin America, but the State Department canceled his passport. Job Hunting? What careers and skills are in demand
By Desert Star Staff Understanding the evolving job market can help you focus your energy productively and land a coveted new job. The recently released 2016 Hot Jobs List, published by Randstad US, one of the largest HR services and staffing companies in the United States, sheds light on important trends and predicts the jobs in greatest demand for the coming year. Some hot areas include information technology, human resources, finance and accounting, office and administration, engineering, and manufacturing and logistics. And there’s good news -experts say that across the board, job candidates can raise their expectations. So what are the most in-demand jobs and skills needed to secure employment in these fields? Consider the following insights and predictions from the Randstad 2016 Hot Jobs study: • Engineers will be highly sought after this year to support innovative technologies, especially in sectors that have not typically required engineering talent in the past, such as healthcare and entertainment. • Technology will continue www.desertstarweekly.com

to transform finance and accounting, presenting a tremendous opportunity to elevate these types of roles. The key will be helping to shape company strategy through a comprehensive data approach. • Organizations will likely gravitate toward human resource candidates with specific skills to cope with an increasingly complex workforce environment, particularly around critical matters such as talent acquisition and retention, succession and compensation planning and workforce engagement. • There continues to be a lack of skilled information
technology talent, particularly in industries that deal with the increasingly complex issues related to cyber risk and business compliance. Companies will continue to seek those with soft skills, like strong writing and communication abilities. • As the economy continues to improve, manufacturing companies are expanding their businesses. This will require an increase in highly-skilled talent. With industry workforce shortages, employers will need to consider different ways to attract and retain talent. • The administrative role continues to evolve, particularly as new
technologies are introduced into workflows. Additionally, many organizations are coping with baby boomers retiring at a rapid pace by advancing current employees into more senior roles, rather than replacing the positions outright. These trends create great opportunity for administrative talent. For full study results, including HR insights and salary projections, visit randstadusa.com/ workforce360. What Women Should Know about Cervical Cancer Screening By Desert Star Staff More than 12,000 women are diagnosed annually with cervical cancer and 4,000 women die each year. However, innovations in diagnostics and prevention could help reduce that number, while also giving women a better understanding of their health. • The basics: Woman 21-65 years old should have a Pap smear every three years according to new health guidelines, along with a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) test in some cases -- not annually as most women were taught. The Pap smear detects changes in cervical cells caused by persistent HPV infections, and the HPV test improves detection. After an abnormal result, doctors may perform a colposcopy exam by applying a solution to the cervix and watching for areas that turn white (acetowhitening), which can indicate abnormal cells. Certain women may need more frequent screening or treatment to remove pre-cancerous areas. • Computer-aided detection: Historically

Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?
By Pam Price Modernism Week’s official schedule of events hit a high note with the Wouldn’t it be Loverly, A Night at the Loewe Estate party that took place on Feb. 20th at this historic private estate in Palm Springs. Time Magazine once called this residence an “airy, glass pleasure dome”, way back in 1960. Fifty-six years later it has retained its inimitable patina of modernism magic with a marvelous staging area for a party, in this case a one-off event in which guests were requested to arrive in “black-and-white ascot attire” inspired by Lerner and Loewe’s iconic Broadway musical and Academy Award winning 1964 film, My Fair Lady. Ladies, such as Rancho
Mirage resident Sandra Elkins, arrived wearing a lavish black and white feathered hat that turned heads, since she “resembled Audrey Hepburn,” remarked a party guest visiting from Palm Beach, Fla. The live auction turned a few heads as well with oneof-a kind art and architecture related to travel experiences in culturally significant locations in the U.S. Among the ‘iconic’ locations was Minnesota where an award trip included a stay in a cozy cabin in Fisher, Minn. along with guided tours in Minneapolis such as The Walker Art Center and Tyrone Guthrie Theatre. There was even more scheduled during the 6-9 PM event which began at the Riviera Hotel where guests

curvaceous ride to the top took mere minutes, and the moment guests entered the estate it resembled a movie set with gentlemen dressed in blackand white ascot attire, right up to their black top hats. There was a gentleman well turned out in a full Scottish argyle kilt as well, adding to the drama. The Honoree and Special Guest was Jack Lenor Larsen, author, collector and textile designer. The time-honored music of Lerner and Lowe’s My Fair Lady was arranged by Jeffrey Huard, Broadway vocal arranger and conductor, filling the evening air with lively, “loverly” performances. It was an exceptional evening with memories evoked of other Lerner and Loewe classics,
suchas Brigadoon, Camelot, Gigi and Paint Your Wagon. “I could have danced all night!,” said Ms Elkins as she boarded the space capsule-esque Cardiff shuttle, the last to leave on that enchanted evening. Proceeds of the event supported the Palm Springs Art Museum’s exhibitions, programs, acquisitions and general operations. The Official Sponsor of the event was H3K Design Renovation Furnishings, with supporting sponsors, Yare’s Art Projects, Hoerr Schaudt, Desert Regional Medical Center, Booth Hanson and Family Development. Carlos Leal. Photo by Michael Lamont. “Barcelona,” by playwright Bess Whol, takes place in Barcelona, Spain in the present. The main window of Manuel’s apartment overlooks the famous Church of the Holy Family (La Sacrada Familia) that is still under construction. It is an important tourist attraction, one that Irene has on her “must see” list before she returns to the States for her upcoming wedding. The play begins with a bang, literally, as Manuel and Irene (Carlos Leal and Betty Gilpin) explode on stage, deep in a passionate embrace. It is obvious what is on both their minds, but as the evening and storyline progresses, you discover that there is a cosmic, spiritual reason for their mismatched meeting this particular night. Irene, a naïve young American girl
and Manuel, an attractive continental man, seem to have nothing in common except their personal pain which is slowly and carefully revealed during the early morning hours. “Barcelona,” directed by Trip Cullman, is fast paced and emotional, with sensitive stage lighting designed by Japhy Weidman. When the lights in the apartment go out, the candlelight and additional soft lighting provided create a sense of intimacy and shadows in the darkness that comes just before dawn. And even though there is a sense of total darkness, the audience can still observe the ongoing drama easily. If you see the play on a Tuesday night there is an after play chat with the two person cast that is truly enlightening as they answer questions from the audience.

Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-New Hampshire) slammed the administration for a lack of detail about the plan, calling a closure of Gitmo an effort to “make Americans less safe.” “The American people have a right to expect that the administration will be transparent and honest with them about the activities and associations of the terrorists who remain at Guantanamo,” Ayotte said Monday. “The administration’s refusal to do so only underscores the fact that closing Guantanamo will make Americans less safe.” The American people

Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Classic
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Classic and Gala was held on Feb. 18,19 and 20. Frank Sinatra would have turned 100 this year and events around the valley are paying tribute to his legacy. The Golf Classic started with a Pairings Party on Thursday night at the Lit Lounge at Fantasy Springs Hotel Casino Spa. Golf Participants filled the lounge to the songs of entertainers, Slim Man group. The guests were treated to a buffet filled with food on 2 stations on the first floor and another food station on the upper level. Waitresses walked around with dessert trays filled with sweet treats. Barbara Sinatra came with her friends to be a part of this night where golfers learn who their playing partners are going to be on Fri. and Sat. Friday night’s party was held in the Special Events Center and Fantasy Springs. A huge silent auction was held in a large room outside the ballroom. The silent auction featured wines, trips, jewelry, sports and celebrity memorabilia and even a Frank Sinatra Tie and Cigars. A cocktail reception

Photo by Pat Krause was held before a large buffet where Frank’s favorite foods were served before an amazing Live Auction. The Live auction included a PGA event, a Weekend at the Kentucky Derby and a painting by Frank Sinatra. All proceeds go to the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. A video by George and Jolene Schlatter about Frank Sinatra’s 80th birthday celebration was shown. In the Video were celebrities Bruce Springstein, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin Don Rickles, Norm Crosby, Rosanne Barr and Gregory Peck. Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole and Patti LaBelle all sang songs in honor of Franks 80th birthday.
What a trip down memory lane for everyone. Ron Masak honored Tony LoBianco and told stories of the 30-year friendship. John Thoreson gave a Scotty Medlock painting of Sinatra to Barbara Sinatra’s son, Bob Marx Then the entertainment started with the iconic LETTERMEN. These 3 men have been together for 38 years. The songs they sang were some of the best-known songs from their albums over the years. They surprised the audience by going out into the crowd singing and shaking hands. They went even further and asked guests to come up for photos with them in front of the stage. Women
Actors Peter Marshall and Kevin Sorbo. Photo by Pat Krause lined up for photos as they sang. One of the final songs was from Les Miserable’s that had guests going WOW for that performance. Each man
in the group had solos that showed their gifted talents. Emcee Tom Dreesen brought them back on stage for a final bow to a standing ovation.

By Desert Star Weekly Palm Springs, CA— Desert Ensemble Theatre today announced its production of Endangered Species, a play in one act written and directed by Tony Padilla, one of the Desert’s most prolific and acclaimed playwrights. This drama has been performed by small municipalities throughout Italy as a means of prompting dialog about our social and
human condition today. It deals with good people committing a horrible sin of omission and questions how we treat each other. It won the International Medal at the 2009 Schegge D’Autore playwriting festival, Rome. The plot involves a middleaged couple that finds a baby in a trashcan in Central Park and discusses their responsibility. Two women in the park at the same time
have very different emotional responses to the situation. The cast includes four popular Coachella Valley actors: Alan Berry, Bonnie Gilgallon, Denise Strand and Yo Younger. Each performance will be followed by a Q&A session hosted by Padilla. Endangered Species replaces Padilla’s previously announced Look at Me, which will be produced in a later season. Tony Padilla was co-
founder and Producing Artistic Director of the former Playwrights’ Circle in Palm Springs, where he produced and directed many award winning new plays. His short play Reckoning is published in Three Genres, a 2008 college text book by Stephen Minot and published by Prentice Hall. In 2014, the Desert Theatre League awarded him Bill Groves Award for Original Writing for
his comedy Becoming Ava. Performances are March 11-13 and 18-20, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 2pm. The production is at the Pearl McManus Theater in the Palm Springs Woman’s Club at 314 S. Cahuilla Road. Tickets are $20 and are now on sale via www.brownpapertickets. com/event/2511755 or by calling 760-565-2476.

MUSIC Timeless masters shine on new sets BY ROBERT KINSLER
A wide-range of groundbreaking musical voices spanning the 20th century are celebrated via a number of noteworthy releases that have been released over the past month.
Artist: Burt Bacharach Title: A Life in Song (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Burt Bacharach, Joss Stone, Justin Hayward, Laura Mvula Tell me more: A songwriter as unique as he is successful, Burt Bacharach’s enormous legacy was the subject of an outstanding BBC4 television titled “A Life in Song” broadcast in November 2015 and now thankfully available everywhere on DVD, Bluray and digital formats. The unique tribute combines conversation between Burt Bacharach and Michael Grade, and performances of many
14
of the singer-songwriterkeyboardist’s most beloved and enduring songs. A strong cast of guests came to London’s Royal Festival Hall to perform Bacharach classics, including Moody Blues singer Justin Hayward (delivering an emotive “What the World Needs Now”), songstress Laura Mvula (singing an inspired “Do You Know the Way to San Jose”) and singer Joss Stone (a ravishing “In Between the Heartaches”). Bacharach also goes to the piano to lead his band through a medley of songs he wrote for movies, as well as “That’s What Friends Are For” with all the night’s guests joining forces for an uplifting finale. Information: eagle-rock.com.
Artists: João Gilberto & Stan Getz Title: Getz/Gilberto ‘76 (Resonance Records) You might like if you enjoy: Luiz Bonfá, João Gilberto, Stan Getz, Bossa nova music
Tell me more: Almost 40 years after enigmatic Brazilian singer-guitarist João Gilberto and tenor saxophone legend Stan Getz performed a series of dates at the Keystone Korner jazz club in San Francisco, highlights from recordings made between May 11-16, 1976 have been issued as a terrific and timeless collection titled “Getz/ Gilberto ‘76.” These recordings were caught 12 years after the legendary artists’ first collaboration in 1962, and there is a warmth and power across the 56-minute disc. Despite the fact that these Bay Area appearances marked Gilberto’s first public performances in four years, his bossa nova vocal and guitar work gleam with perfection on the songs (particularly “Aguas de Marco” and “Samba da Minha Terra”) and instrumental selections (the impressive original composition “João Marcelo”). In addition to the two top-tier performers, Joanne Brackeen (piano), Clint Houston (bass) and Billy Hart (drums) shine throughout. The audio CD version of the album comes with a wonderful 32-page booklet featuring rare photos, essays and interviews related to the 1976 concerts that are featured on the release. Artist: Supersonic Blues Machine Title: West of Flushing, South of Frisco (Mascot Label Group) You might like if you enjoy: Walter Trout, Warren Haynes, Billy F. Gibbons Tell me more: Blues-rock trio Supersonic Blues Machine doesn’t waste anytime on their impressive debut “West of Flushing, South of Frisco.” Listening to tracks such as “Miracle Man” and “Bone Bucket Blues, it’s clear singerguitarist Fabrizio Grossi, bassist Lance Lopez and drummer Kenny Aronoff approach playing their hard-hitting style of blues-rock with the passion of a young alternative rock band and that’s a good thing. Joined by a number of legendary names, the album will make an essential addition for fans of electric blues and classic rock. The list of luminaries and their contributions is hard to top; ZZ Top frontman Billy F. Gibbons leads the group through a fiery “Running Whiskey, while Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes joins in for a nuanced but powerful “Remedy.” Singerguitar hero Walter Trout joins Supersonic Blues Machine for the gospel-tinged blues burner “Can’t Take It No More,” a song that not only showcases the strengths of all the players but the emphasis on songwriting that makes this LP required listening to fans of the genre. Other guests making fitting guest stints across the album include Robben Ford, Chris Duarte and Eric Gales. Information: SupersonicBlues.com and MascotLabelGroup.com.
Artist: Stan Getz Quartet Title: Moments in Time (Resonance Records) You might like if you enjoy: Stan Getz, Kenny Barron Tell me more: A perfect companion release to “Getz/ Gilberto ‘76,” “Moments in Time” draws selections from the same May 11-16, 1976 span but focuses strictly on the quartet of Stan Getz (tenor saxophone), Joanne Brackeen (piano), Clint Houston (bass) and Billy Hart (drums). “Moments in Time” features eight stellar works, including the breathtaking “Summer Night” (with an incredible solo from Brackeen), the Latinflavored “O Grande Amor” (with Getz displaying his amazing rich and lyrical tone on an extended solo that opens the instrumental), and alluring version of the Wayne Shorter-penned “Infant Eyes.” Artist: Paul Burch

Title: Meridian Rising (Plowboy Records) You might like if you enjoy: Jimmie Rodgers, Merle Haggard, Michael Ubaldini Tell me more: A groundbreaking musical pioneer who blended popular music, country, folk and blues together in the late 1920s and early 30s, the late Jimmie Rodgers’ short career and life (the Mississippi native died at the age of 35 in May 1933) are celebrated by singer-songwriter Paul Burch on “Meridian Rising.” The ambitious project not only sheds light and insight into the short life of Rodgers, but yields a number of great songs that stand tall within and apart from the collection. The swinging blues of “Cadillacin’,” county blues trot of “US Rte 49,” lovely baroque ballad “Ain’t That Water Lucky” and the bittersweet “If I Could Only Catch My Breath” are standouts. Information: plowboyrecords.com.
Artist: Elvis Costello Title: Detour Live at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Elvis Costello, Larkin Poe, Bob Dylan Tell me more: One of the greatest and most important songwriters of the rock era, Elvis Costello’s diverse and affecting songbook was definitely on display when the British artist’s “Detour” was captured in Liverpool in 2015. Performing in an intimate acoustic setting where he was accompanied solely by his own guitar or piano, or at times with sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe, “Detour Live at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall” includes early favorites (the set opening “Red Shoes,” “Accidents Will Happen,” “Watching the Detectives”), as well as recent masterworks (“Church Underground,” “Jimmie Standing in the Rain”). Lesser-known Costello songs get a well-deserved reintroduction; the Costello-Bob Dylan nugget “Down on the Bottom” is especially stirring, enhanced by the contributions of the Lovell sisters’ wonderful vocal harmonies. ALDI to Open First Southland Stores on Thursday, March 24
By Desert Star Staff Batavia, Ill. – Californians will see for themselves why ALDI was named one of America’s favorite grocers* when ALDI opens its first eight Southland locations on Thursday, March 24. The ALDI grand openings will mark a significant milestone for the grocery retailer as it prepares to open approximately 45 stores and employ more than 1,100 people in Southern California by the end of 2016. “Ever since we announced our plan to bring ALDI to Southern California, the positive response from people across the Southland has been overwhelming, and we’re excited to start opening stores next month and throughout the year,” said Gordon Nesbit, Moreno Valley division vice president for ALDI. “There is a strong appetite among Southern Californians for an alternative place to shop and we are eager to show them the significant benefits that can come from shopping at ALDI, both for their wallets and lifestyles.” ALDI Grand Opening Celebrations: Each ALDI store will host a three-day grand opening event that kicks off on March 24 at 8:45 a.m. with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. The first 100 shoppers to
arrive at each store will receive a golden ticket redeemable for an ALDI gift certificate of various amounts, and all shoppers will be invited to enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win Produce for a Year. Additionally, shoppers on March 24, 25 and 26 will receive a complimentary ALDI reusable eco-bag. What to Know Before You Go: When shopping at ALDI for the first time, customers will immediately see that ALDI is a little different from other grocery stores. Those little differences add up to big savings for customers and are the key reasons ALDI is one of America’s favorite grocery stores: • Simply, Smarter, Shopping: A simple approach to grocery shopping translates into big savings for ALDI shoppers. In fact, shoppers have found that switching from national brands to ALDI exclusive brands can save them up to 50 percent** on their grocery bill. • ALDI Exclusive Brand Products: More than 90 percent of the premium groceries available at ALDI are exclusive brand products rather than national brands. In its state-of-the-art Test Kitchen, ALDI ensures that its products meet or exceed the quality and
• Double Guarantee: Shopping at ALDI is risk free because of its Double Guarantee: If for any reason a customer is not 100% satisfied with any ALDI exclusive brand food, ALDI will gladly replace the product and refund the purchase price. • Regional Favorites: ALDI stores in California will feature a large selection of local favorites including California sourced wine and produce. • USDA Choice Meat: All beef available at ALDI is USDA Choice cut and sold in vacuum sealed, leak-proof packaging that ensures meat stays fresher, longer. • Healthier Checklanes: ALDI offers shoppers guilt-free checklanes where only betterfor-you items are available, such as single serve nuts and trail mixes, dried fruits, and an assortment of granola bars. • ALDI Finds: Each week, ALDI offers a special selection of premium food and nonfood products, ranging from small kitchen appliances and toys to gardening items and outdoor furniture. These items are only in stores for a limited
taste of national name brands. • Organic and Gluten Free Options: ALDI carries a variety of organic and gluten free items including organic fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, and organic and gluten-free packaged food items. What’s missing from these premium foods? Premium prices. • Feel Good Food: Customers won’t find certified synthetic colors, partially hydrogenated oils or added MSG in any ALDI exclusive brand foods. Since more than 90 percent of the products in ALDI, stores are under ALDI exclusive brands, shoppers can feel good about the food they buy.
time so customers must hurry, because here today could mean gone tomorrow. • Easy-to-Shop, Consistent Layout: ALDI has an easyto-shop, manageable layout of 10,000 to 11,000 square feet and four to five aisles. • Quarter Cart System: With parking at a premium in the Southland, shoppers don’t have to worry about shopping carts taking the best parking spots. Lend ALDI a quarter, and ALDI will lend you a cart. When you bring back the cart, you’ll get back your quarter. • Bring Your Bag, Bag Your Groceries: ALDI encourages customers to bring their own reusable grocery bags, however paper and plastic bags are available for purchase. After check out, customers pack their own groceries. That keeps the lines moving, so shoppers can get in, get what they need and get on with their day. • Store Hours: ALDI is open during prime shopping times. California stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Sunday.

Kalamazoo shooting suspect picked up Uber customers during rampage
By Desert Star Staff A bizarre twist in the Kalamazoo shooting rampage that left six people dead and two injured has seen the suspect revealed as an Uber driver who picked up customers

throughout his alleged crimes. Police say Jason Dalton chose seemingly-random victims in several parking lots including an apartment complex, Kia car dealership, and Cracker Barrel restaurant.
A 14-year-old girl is in a critical condition, authorities say, and the first victim, a woman who was shot multiple times, is “seriously wounded”, according to WDIV-TV. A statement from Uber’s Chief Security February 24, 2016
Officer Joe Sullivan said, “We are horrified and heartbroken at the senseless violence in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Our hearts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this devastating crime and those recovering from injuries. We have reached out to the police to help with their investigation in any way that we can.” One local media outlet reports three people used Dalton for an Uber ride to the Fairfield Inn Marriott before he allegedly carried out the shootings at multiple locations. WOOD-TV discovered a now-removed Facebook post warning Uber customers of dangerous driving from a driver who matches Dalton’s description. Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said “There’s no common
denominator with any of these. This person was just waiting in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The one at the dealership they were looking at cars. The ones at Cracker Barrel they were just sitting in their cars. There is absolutely no common denominator through race, age, anything.” Authorities said Dalton has no previous criminal record. Ride hailing company Uber allows drivers to taxi people for a charge. Registered Uber drivers must undergo a background check that Uber claims is “industry-leading” in driver screening practices. Last year a San Francisco court heard that, the company’s background check failed to flag 25 drivers with criminal records in Los Angeles and San Francisco. www.desertstarweekly.com

Charlie Sheen ‘s HIV disclosure had big online impact
By Lindsey Tanner CHICAGO - Actor Charlie Sheen was called a lot of things during his bad-boy days. Until now, public health promoter wasn’t one of them. Sheen’s revelation that he’s infected with the AIDS virus prompted the greatest number of HIV-related Google searches recorded in the United States since 2004, and more than 1 million of them involved public
health-related information. That’s according to a new study from San Diego State University research professor John Ayers and colleagues, who examined the impact of the announcement Nov. 17 by the former star of TV’s “Two and a Half Men.” “While no one should be forced to reveal HIV status, Sheen’s disclosure may benefit public health by helping many
people learn more about HIV infection and prevention,” the researchers wrote in a report published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine. They analyzed Google trends data along with news trends from a Bloomberg LP terminal system from 2004 through three weeks after Sheen’s announcement. Given historic trends, there were almost 3 million more searches about HIV on Nov. 17 than expected, and more than 1 million were related to important public health messages because they included search terms for condoms, HIV symptoms or HIV testing. The study doesn’t list the total number of HIV-related searches that day on Google. The researchers also found there were more than 6,500 HIV-related news stories - not counting duplicates from the same news source - on Google News alone on Nov. 17, reversing a decade-long decline in news reporting about the virus. Sheen’s tumultuous professional and personal life has made news before - for public outbursts,
drug and alcohol use and prostitution. The study didn’t look at the online impact of those headlines. The researchers noted that former NBA star Magic Johnson sparked increased HIV awareness when he disclosed his own infection, in 1991, before the Internet was so ubiquitous. They said public health authorities could leverage the “Charlie Sheen effect” to keep the spotlight on HIV awareness, and that Sheen’s disclosure could potentially have a greater impact because of how connected people are to information. About 1 million people nationwide are HIV-infected but government estimates say about 150,000 of them don’t know it - emphasizing the importance of better awareness, Ayers said. A journal editorial says public health authorities face a challenge when blockbuster celebrity health news surfaces, and need to make sure useful health information is easily accessible to consumers at such moments. How To Trade 9-To-5 Misery For Your Life’s Passion
By Desert Star Staff It’s no surprise that those with boring-but-safe, 9-to-5 jobs tend to be unsatisfied and less successful than they could be in their careers. That’s because the first ingredient to success is to do what you’re passionate about, says serial entrepreneur Parviz Firouzgar, author of “20/20 Hindsight” (www. parvizfirouzgar.com).“When you have the chance to do what you actually love, take it,” says Firouzgar, who did so and made a fortune. “The surest way to work your life’s dream is to exercise entrepreneurship, which usually means creating your own niche business. Believe me – it’s possible when you have passion and your specialization fills a need. I’ve done it multiple times and it has been a great ride.” Through trial and error – and after decades of experience – Firouzgar has uncovered reliable tips for creating a business so you can live your passion. • Find a good mentor. Of course, your enterprise must be financially sustainable. Imagine having the ability to skip ahead to possessing that unique set of skills that comes with already having earned your first fortune. “Had I known what it would take to earn my first million before I’d earned that knowledge, it would have come much quicker and easier,” says

Firouzgar. “A good mentor helps you fast-forward through time-consuming mistakes, and will help you learn from their mistakes so you don’t have to experience them.” • Formulate a quality business plan for the start-up phase. Getting excited over an idea is fun, but figuring out logistics is where the work begins. While investors seek confidence first and foremost in people – their passion, determination and past successes – a sound business plan is vital for raising capital. If multiple investors refuse your project, it may mean the plan didn’t demonstrate how and when the investment would generate an acceptable return. • To-do lists are nonnegotiable – use them. Among
the abundant academic and self-help literature intended to help aspirational people achieve goals, there is one proven and reliable tool that sets the gold standard like nothing else: a to-do list. To-do lists act as cheat sheets for keeping your busy mind focused on what needs to be addressed. “An added tip in executing a to-do list: do first what you like doing least,” Firouzgar says. • In partnerships, you need more than good intentions. New businesses are often founded on shared dreams within a relationship. But before moving forward on a good intention with a family member, spouse or friend, give the concept and February 24, 2016
its logistics an honest and objective assessment. “Few people understand why this dynamic so often fails,” he says. “But, more importantly, even fewer people have managed to avoid the pitfalls the first time they enter into a business partnership.” About Parviz Firouzgar: Parviz Firouzgar, author of “20/20 Hindsight” (www. parvizfirouzgar.com), founded several multi-million dollar companies in multiple industries, and has innovated new ways to raise funds for charitable purposes. Best Way to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day This Year
Dezart Performs “On The Air! A Gala Evening of Live Radio Show Classics” At The Camelot Theatres By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Radio buffs and theater-lovers alike will get to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 in a very special way this year, thanks to one of the valley’s favorite performing arts groups, Dezart Performs. On that night only, they’ll get to enjoy a third edition of “On The Air! A Gala Evening of Live Radio Show Classics” at The Camelot Theatres, announced Artistic Director Michael Shaw. Desert Regional Medical Center is the presenting sponsor, he said. The live show on fictional radio station KDZT will take the audience back in time to radio’s golden age of the 1940s and 1950s. A celebrity cast will recreate three favorite shows from that era, complete with a radio announcer, a band and singing trio, “On Air” and “Applause” signs, dramatic sound effects created by live artists right on stage—and even commercials with original jingles for the modern-day companies sponsoring the special event. “On The Air!” starts at 7:00 p.m. The evening ends with an exclusive post-performance reception upstairs at the Camelot Internationale Café for holders of VIP tickets, where they’ll have a chance to meet the stars of the show. Tickets for the show are $35 and $50, and $75 with the VIP reception. They can be purchased online at www. dezartperforms.org or by calling (760) 322-0179. Many of the celebrities who made the last two years’ shows such a hit will be returning this year, Shaw said, and three new ones will join the cast as well. Returning to delight audiences are Valorie Armstrong, Steven Brand,
Joyce Bulifant, Patrick Evans, Bob Hardt (as MC), Gavin MacLeod, Millicent Martin, Ron Masak, Melinda Peterson, Roger Perry, and Phil Proctor. Joining for the first time are Lee Meriwether, Sal Mistretta, Devon Sorvari and Bob Bergen (the current voice of Porky Pig.) The radio shows to be vividly recreated are “The Bickersons,” “My Favorite Husband,” and “Richard Diamond: Private Detective.” Returning for a third straight year is director Gregg Oppenheimer, son of Jess Oppenheimer, the original creator and head writer of “My Favorite Husband,” which starred Lucille Ball and later became the hit television show, “I Love Lucy.” Original material is being written by Eric Chiel. Barney McClure is musical director, and Shaw and Clark Dugger are co-producers. “On The Air!” is truly back “by popular demand,” Shaw said. “I can’t tell you how many patrons came up to me after last year’s sold-out show, and said, ‘You have to do this again!’ What a great thing to hear! So we began planning for 2016 right away. We selected new episodes of two of the
shows our audience enjoyed the most in our first year, ‘The Bickersons’ and ‘My Favorite Husband.’ And for variety, we selected a brand new show sure to bring back memories, ‘Richard Diamond: Private Detective.’ It’s been so much fun putting it together again, I can’t wait for our patrons to see—and hear—this show! We’ve really pulled together the finest entertainment available while staying true to what everyone fell in love with in the first place.” “On The Air!” sponsors, along with Presenting Sponsor
Desert Regional Medical Center, are Lulu California Bistro, The Desert Sun and The Saguaro Hotel. Media sponsors include Palm Springs Life, CV Independent, Desert Entertainer and Gay Desert Guide. The gala is a major source of revenue for the Palm Springs-based performing arts non-profit whose distinction is showcasing the work of established and emerging playwrights from across the country for Coachella Valley audiences. The current season began with two award-winning dark
comedies, “The Receptionist,” and “Suicide Dogs,” the latter a World Premiere. The season ends with “The Outgoing Tide,”starring Michael Fairman and Judith Chapman from April 22 through May 8 at the Pearl McManus Theater in downtown Palm Springs. For more information about Dezart Performs, “On The Air! A Gala Evening of Live Radio Show Classics,” and other offerings of the 2015/2016 season, please call (760) 322-0179 or go to www.dezartperforms.org.

Palm Canyon Theatre Goes Full Monty
By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, Calif., – Based on the hit 1997 British film of the same name, the Americanized stage version of The Full Monty is sure to arouse crowds at the Palm Canyon Theatre February 26-March 13. And, yes… come the finale, they will bare all! The story is centered around Jerry, played by Nicholas Sloan, an unemployed steelworker, who is desperate to make money or face losing partial custody of his 10-year-old son, Nathan, played by Fabrizio Ibanez.
