David Bowie Dies

Rock legend David Bowie dies at 69 after long battle with cancer By Desert Star Staff Legendary rock artist David Bowie has died at 69, after an 18-month battle with cancer, his publicist confirmed to SkyNews. The news was also posted on the musician’s official website. The artist “died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month

battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.” The artist’s career spanned more than 40 years, and was marked by numerous style transitions from rock to electronic music. All the while Bowie managed to maintain a solid,

cross-generational fan base. Stardom came in 1972, with The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The album strayed into unknown territory – a mix of British mod, synth-pop, and elements that fashioned rock music into something theatrical. That is when Bowie’s alter

ego Ziggy Stardust was born. Some of his most notable tracks known the world over include 1973’s ‘Space Oddity’, 1983’s ‘Let’s Dance’ and 1977’s ‘Heroes.’ He went through many more gear during his career and collaborated with numerous heavyweights such as Queen,

Mick Jagger, Tina Turner and others. Bowie survived to witness Friday’s release of his latest album ‘Blackstar’, which critics lauded as another proof of the artist’s gift to stay relevant and come up with fresh ways to

There are usually 3 Golden Boys to this Concert but Fabian had to cancel because of illness. Both Avalon and Rydell came on stage together to start the Concert. The First to entertain was Rydell. He started with Goodie Goodie and Wild One. He told of his double transplant that he was so fortunate to be alive because of

this 21-year-old girl. This girl also helped save 7 other people so he asked the audience to put on their drivers license that they will be a donor to help save someone else. He came so close to death and is forever grateful to his donor. He asked the audience if they knew what a 45 player was and how many still had one. A lot of hands went up to his surprise. He said that a lot of the singers from that era were close friends and that he and Avalon lived only a couple blocks from each other growing up. He sang his 1960

Gold Record hit, Volare and another hit, Sway. The Philly Boys <Golden Boys>, Rydell, Avalon and Fabian and have been touring together for years. They were all teen Idols and movie stars during their careers. Frankie Avalon came on stage next, mentioned Rydell as a friend, and said he was always skinny so they named him Pipe cleaner in Italian. the older generations are more emotional during this film than the younger generation and that is why she told the story to her fellow actors. Tomlin also said she was always involved in entertaining even as a young girl. She would create plays with

her childhood friends and show them on her patio. Many times the kids would not show up so she learned to do stand up by herself. She always felt she could do it all. Tomlin said that she loved working with all the actors as they had a lot of fun and there was a lot of chemistry among them. They all worked so well together and she felt they are just the best actors in this movie. She has worked with Director Paul Weitz before and was thrilled to be working with him again. Tomlin also mentioned the old car she still has that is used in the film. She joked she drove it until the brakes got too bad. She loved the car with all its chrome trim and said because it was black the trim showed even more She loved that car and when they said they needed an old car in the movie she gave them hers to use. He introduced the drummer as his son who gave a solo to show his talents on the drums. Avalon said he has been married to the same woman for years and they have 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls ages 42 to 52. Avalon and Rydell still have amazing voices and can still belt out a song with the best of them. Singing oldies brought back a lot of good memories for all their fans.

Social Media and How it may Impair your Credit

By Janice Gough Imagine that you are a small business owner, apply for a loan and are tur ned down due to photos or information that you or friends have posted on Facebook. There’s been a lot of confusion recently about whether social media activity affects your credit, after a story in the Financial Times headlined: “Being ‘wasted’ on Facebook may damage your credit score.” It may not be used by every creditor at this time, but it is just a matter of time. At this point, social media data is not part of any FICO score, however with new technology, Facebook

To business owners, connecting with those of good character is important for growing and maintaining business. A possible client will determine a lot about who you are, by looking at those in your inner circle. The old saying, “Birds of a Feather flock together” has always been true. Trust is imperative to long term to success. You should always assume your social-media accounts are being examined when applying for a business loan. Insurance companies have used credit scores to determine character and pride of ownership for years. This information determines the cost of your premium. HOA Homefront – Suspended Corporation, Quorum By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

Dear Kelly, I was elected HOA President shortly after we bought a unit in the complex. I was told that the HOA was an unincorporated association. After some digging, I discovered the HOA was a corporation not in good standing and had not filed tax returns in past recent years! I received approval to move forward, hired an accountant and filed years of back taxes. After some months, the HOA was returned to good standing. At the last HOA meeting, I was accused of wasting HOA funds on accountants and lawyers. I need some clarification from you on this issue, as it is my belief that the HOA needs to be in good standing and needs to file its annual federal and

Dear E.S.: Not all common interest developments (aka “homeowners associations”) are incorporated, but most are. Usually the first page of the bylaws will state whether an association is incorporated or unincorporated. If incorporated, the Articles of Incorporation should be kept with the other governing documents, and copies can be retrieved from the state. Incorporated associations must periodically file two forms, the “SI-100” and “SI-CID” forms, with the Secretary of State. The forms can be found on line at www.sos.ca.gov. If the

If the documents do not define quorum, Corporations Code 7512 states that one third of the voting power is a quorum. On important votes such as amending CC&Rs, hopefully the members who vote are normally very much in agreement. However, the most common problem is that most neighbors will not take the time to read the document, and so they do not vote on the proposed amendments. Since most CC&Rs require a supermajority (67% or even more) to approve, it can be even harder to pass the amendments. However, Civil Code 4275 provides that, if more than 50% of the entire membership votes to approve the CC&R amendment, a court may order the amendment deemed approved, even though it did not receive the supermajority. Thanks, Kelly

4 Common Diabetes Myths Debunked the result of a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors. Healthy hint: Even if you only use sugar substitutes as sweeteners, consuming excessive calories from other foods can still contribute to developing Type 2 diabetes. Myth: If I have diabetes, I have to follow a restrictive diet that includes no carbs and definitely no dessert. Truth: You might be surprised to learn that generally speaking, individuals with diabetes can follow the same healthy diet recommended for the general public -- one that includes lean proteins, nonstarchy vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and fruit, and that minimizes saturated and trans fats, salt and sugar. Carbohydrates are an acceptable and necessary part of a healthy meal plan. However, pay attention to portion. Optimal carb counts vary, but the American Diabetes Association recommends starting with 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal, and tweaking depending on your body’s response. Some good carbs to consider include whole grain

breads, pastas, rice and cereals, plus starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas and corn. Fruits, beans, milk and yogurt also count toward daily carbohydrates. Those with diabetes can also still enjoy sweet treats in small portions on special occasions. Myth: If my blood sugar doesn’t improve right after losing weight, it never will. Truth: It may take time for the body to adjust to the new way of eating. If you don’t see quick improvements, be patient. Also, stay in touch with your doctor since your medication or insulin may need to be adjusted. To make eating right a snap, consider following a structured meal plan like Nutrisystem D, which provides pre-portioned meals to help manage diabetes. More information can be found at www.Nutrisystem.com. Getting the formula right for a healthy lifestyle is not just an art, it’s a science -- particularly if you have diabetes. By Desert Star Staff Knowing the facts about diabetes is important for everyone, as living a healthy lifestyle can play a key role in helping to prevent and control the disease. To help, the Certified Diabetes Educators at Nutrisystem are debunking some common myths. Myth: I’m a healthy weight -- I can’t get diabetes.

Truth: Although there is a clear connection between being overweight or obese and developing Type 2 diabetes, genetics and other lifestyle factors like diet can play a role as well. By maintaining a healthy weight, eating a nutritious, balanced diet and engaging in healthy habits like regular exercise, you can decrease your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

By Desert Star Staff Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious, highly contagious disease that kills about 1.5 million people each year worldwide and has become the world’s leading infectious disease killer, according to a new report from the World Health Organization. TB usually begins as a latent infection, which can be silent for weeks, months or years before developing into an active contagious disease characterized by chronic cough, fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats and coughing up blood. With this in mind, regular testing for the early stage of TB infection is important, especially in children whose immune systems are not fully developed and thereby have a higher risk of it progressing into an active and possibly deadly disease. However, “inaccurate,” “timeconsuming” and “outdated” are

the three terms most often used to describe the 110-year-old TB skin test, which is the most commonly used test to aid in the diagnosis of the infection. The TB skin test requires an injection of antigens to see how the patient’s body reacts, multiple doctors’ visits and can result in false positives, especially in those who have been vaccinated for TB in the past. Luckily another option for the detection of TB infection -- a TB Blood Test -- is now being offered and represents a major scientific advance over its predecessor, giving greater accuracy and a more dependable result. Reliable results from the TB Blood Test can be obtained within 24 hours and provided by telephone, offering the convenience of a single visit, and confidence in an objective, laboratory-based result. California Tops in Nation for Human Trafficking

Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day (Marjan Apostolovic/iStock)

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - Today is Human Trafficking Awareness Day and California has the biggest problem in the nation judging from the number of calls to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline. In 2015, the hotline received more than 2,700 calls that led to 711 cases in the Golden State. T h a t ’s actually an improvement over 2014 when the state saw more than 900 cases. Jenna Novak is a regional specialist with Polaris, the company that administers the hotline. “Human trafficking is a form

of modern-day slavery where an individual is compelled to engage either in commercial sex or some kind of labor through the means of forced fraud or coercion,” says Novak. “I think it’s happening under our nose everywhere, all of the time.” A 2012 report from the state human trafficking task force found that sex trafficking, in the form of forced prostitution rings, are run by gangs that now use social media to lure victims and attract customers. It also found almost three quarters of the victims are American-born, not immigrants. Novak says forced-labor

cases are about 20 percent of the total calls to the hotline, mostly in the areas of domestic work, traveling sales crews, begging rings, health and beauty services and agriculture. “Sex trafficking is talked about a lot more and it’s a lot easier to recognize those signs than it is to recognize the labor trafficking victim,” says Novak. To request help or report suspected human trafficking, call the hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “HELP” to “BeFree” on your cell phone. Source: Public News Service

Mexico captures fugitive drug lord ‘El Chapo’ Guzman – president

By Desert Star Staff The notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been arrested after his scandalous prison break last year, the Mexican president announced via his Twitter. “Mission completed: we’ve got him. I’d like to inform the Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained,” Enrique Pena Nieto wrote. Five people were killed and one marine was wounded in a shootout that occurred during an operation to capture the kingpin in the city of Los Mochis, in his home state of Sinaloa, an official told AP on condition of anonymity. Mexican marines raided El Chapo’s home, acting on a tipoff, before dawn, the navy said in a statement adding that five suspects had been killed and six arrested. Two armored vehicles, eight long guns, one

handgun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher were seized in the operation. El Chapo (aka “Shorty”) is considered to be Mexico’s top drug lord and head of the Sinaloa cartel. The US Drug Enforcement Administration has called El Chapo the biggest drug lord of all time. In 2011 he reportedly surpassed the infamous “cocaine king” Pablo Escobar. Mexico, Interpol and the US, which had offered a $5 million reward for any information leading to his capture, wanted him. He was first arrested in 1993 and spent almost a decade in a maximum-security prison near Mexico City before escaping in 2001. After 13 years on the run, he was recaptured in 2014. However, last July a new prison break made the headlines again. He escaped through a

1.5-kilometer long, 10-meter deep tunnel dug from within his cell, despite being incarcerated in the country’s highest-security federal prison. The tunnel from the facility

led to a half-constructed empty house in nearby fields. Chapo reportedly paid as much as $50 million in bribes to facilitate his escape. His latest jailbreak sparked

one of the largest manhunts in the country’s history and spurred major criticism about the government’s ability to safeguard the drug lord.

batteries, the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) would like to remind consumers how to safely and legally dispose of them. Used batteries can contain cobalt, nickel, cadmium, and

other toxic heavy metals. They are also corrosive. For these reasons, they are considered household hazardous waste and must be handled appropriately to prevent contaminating the environment and posing a health risk to the public or to disposal workers. Do not throw used batteries into the garbage or a recycling bin. It’s unsafe—and it’s against the law. Most retailers, such as bigbox stores, that sell batteries in California are required by law to take back rechargeable batteries. All batteries, including non-rechargeable types, can be taken to your local household hazardous waste site. It’s a good idea to call ahead to confirm collection hours and whether there are any collection restrictions. The following webpage list places that accept used January 13, 2016

batteries. · Earth911.com Residential recycling bins are generally for aluminum and steel cans, paper, plastic, and glass—never for used batteries. In fact, putting batteries in recycling bins creates a host of problems for recycling facilities. When such facilities are found to have more than 10 percent of non-recyclable or “residual” material in their material stream, they can be cited. Since batteries are relatively heavy, they can quickly put a recycling center over its residual limit. Taking your batteries to a proper collection site ensures they get appropriately managed and the recyclable elements can be put to their highest and best use. Keep in mind that rechargeable batteries can last hundreds, if not more than a thousand, times as long as single-use types, which can add up to substantial cost

savings and greatly reduce the amount of material that has to be managed at the end of its useful life. Rechargeable batteries are also made of a higher percentage of recyclable material, which makes recycling them more cost-effective for manufacturers. Outdoor retailer REI has useful information on choosing batteries; Consumer Reports also has a useful battery-buying guide. Why not make a New Year’s resolution to protect the environment, disposal facility workers, and the public? Put used batteries in an empty box, in an out-of-the way place, until it’s full enough to warrant a trip to your local household hazardous waste facility or retailer. By Desert Star Staff Cathedral City, CA. – A reception for two new murals sponsored by the Agnes Pelton Society Murals Project in the Cathedral City Cove will be held in the sculpture garden of the historic home of American Modernist painter, Agnes Pelton on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 11:00 am. The unveiling of the murals will occur at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend. The Murals Project is a community-building effort by the Agnes Pelton Society, who commissioned local artists to paint and collaborate with private homeowners to create art that is historic and culturally relevant to the neighborhood. The murals are painted on walls adjacent to the Pelton Sculpture Garden and face each other on what is commonly known as Chuperosa Lane. One is a graphic montage designed by photographer and President of the Agnes Pelton Society, Peter Palladino. It depicts 1920s-‘50s Cove residents who were nationally recognized painters,

writers, and musicians. They lived, worked, and taught in this former artist’s colony known then as “Cathedral Village.” The second mural entitled “Lalo and Five Mariachis,” by Luiz Castro, is a tribute to celebrated former Cove resident, Lalo Guerrero, popularly known as the “Father of Chicano Music.” There will be live acoustical music and the debut of an original dance from the Simeon Den Theater/Dance Group dedicated to Agnes Pelton and her group, the Transcendental Artists. The Agnes Pelton Society is a non-profit Arts advocacy corporation. Among other community activities they sponsor free monthly art classes for children, organize art exhibitions, host the monthly Perez Road fine art gallery walk and created the Murals Project in the Cove that commissions local artists to paint works celebrating the culturally and socially diverse Cathedral City community.

Merle Haggard at the Mccallum Theatre

By Desert Star Staff Through the generosity of Harold Matzner, the McCallum Theatre presents iconic country music star Merle Haggard on Monday, February 8th, at 8:00pm. This show is rescheduled from December 2nd. At the age of 73, the veteran singer/songwriter/ guitarist/producer/bandleader is still making some of the most compelling music of his long and storied career. It almost goes without saying that Merle Haggard is widely regarded as country music’s greatest living recording artist. A rugged individualist who simultaneously embodies and transcends the genre, Merle is both a seminal superstar and an unrepentant outsider. Over the course of a remarkably prolific five-decade career, he’s consistently shown himself to be an uncompromising creative force, far more concerned with pursuing his iconoclastic vision than with

meeting the expectations of the music-industry establishment. Along the way, Merle has scored no less than 39 #1 country hits; won various Grammy, Country Music Association (CMA) and Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards; become the only California-born artist in the Country Music Hall of Fame; the only country performer ever featured on the cover of the jazz bible Downbeat; as well as the only man to be invited to perform at the White House and invited to serve time in San Quentin Penitentiary. Merle’s turbulent and ultimately triumphant life has been full of surprises. The son of parents who fled the ravages of the Oklahoma dust bowl, he was born in a converted boxcar in Oildale, California, in 1937. His father died when Merle was nine, and he spent his adolescence following his restless urges, hitting the road and riding the rails. He was also incarcerated

in and escaped from a series of juvenile institutions, and his troubles with the law culminated in a botched robbery attempt that won the 20-year-old Merle a three-year stretch in San Quentin. His prison experiences led Merle who’d begun playing guitar at the age of 12 and worshipped Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell and Hank Williams to take stock of his life and decide to pursue a career in music. Upon his 1962 release, he became a fixture on Bakersfield’s thriving country music scene, working manual labor jobs by day and playing local clubs by night. A string of singles for the local Tally label led to a deal with Capitol Records, and in 1965 Merle launched an incredible string of classic hits including “Swinging Doors,” “The Bottle Let Me Down,” “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive,” “Branded Man,” “Sing Me Back Home,” “Today I Started Loving You Again,” “Mama Tried,” “Hungry Eyes,” “Silver Wings,” “Workin’ Man Blues,”

“The Fightin’ Side of Me,” “If We Make It Through December” and the much-misunderstood “Okie From Muskogee.” Those classics found Merle honoring country music traditions, drawing upon a broad range of jazz, blues, and folk influences, while his vivid, emotionally nuanced lyrics poignantly chronicled the dreams and heartbreaks of common people, as well as his own harsh life experiences. Through the generosity of Harold Matzner, the McCallum Theatre presents Merle Haggard on Monday, February 8th, at 8:00pm. Tickets are $97, $77, $67 and $57and are available at the Theatre’s website at www. mccallumtheatre.com, or by calling the McCallum Theatre Box Office at (760) 340-ARTS. A billion dollars, country goes crazy, nobody wins

By Desert Star Staff It’s like running for a bus so fast you feel you’re going to pass out.. Only to arrive gasping and realize it’s even later than you are. In the lead up to the record breaking billion dollar Powerball lottery draw America got money fever. Bad. “At our peak last night, we were selling more than $1.2 million in Powerball tickets every single minute”, said Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery. Powerball trended, millions of hopefuls tuned in on Saturday night, www.desertstarweekly.com

eagerly clutching their potential ticket to a life of inconceivable wealth...and then nobody won. The money has rolled over to the next draw on Wednesday and the $1.3 billion jackpot, the biggest in American history, is expected to rise again. And so it continues. Here are just some of the ways America totally lost its chill at the prospect of becoming a billionaire: Granted, the odds of guessing all the correct numbers were 1 in 292.2 million, you have more chances of being struck by lightning, being killed by a vending

machine or flipping a coin to heads 28 times. But that didn’t stop people from dreaming… Chase that American Dream people…or just stand in line. If someone does manage to nab the jackpot on Wednesday (we want to be your friend) you could splash the cash by buying 288 of the world’s most expensive car, a $4.5 million Lamborghini Veneno. You could buy 18 $70 million 2015 Gulfstream jets, or you could own 80 private islands off the coast of Dubai. Just because there were January 13, 2016

no jackpot winners, doesn’t mean some people didn’t get paid. In Arizona alone there were two people who won a cool $1 million each. There was one $150,000 and fifteen $50,000 winners, even still, haters gon’ hate. Let’s all take a minute to take pity on the poor Powerball Lottery advertising team who were clearly not expecting the jackpot to ever exceed $999 million. The sign says it’s 999 million, but current Powerball is really 1.3 billion. Yes, the sign ran out of room.

Acura Precision Concept Points to Bold Future for Acura Design

By Desert Star Staff DETROIT, -- The Acura Precision Concept model made its world debut at the 2016 North American International Auto Show today, pointing toward a bolder, more distinctive future for Acura vehicle design. The Acura Precision Concept was developed by the Acura Design Studio in California to express the Acura brand DNA of “Precision Crafted Performance.” “There is no more clear promise for the Acura brand than Precision Crafted Performance,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura. “We’re committed to infusing this core Acura promise into every facet of our products and every aspect of our relationship with the customer.” With an emphasis on high-contrast details and the intersection of modern, sheer surfaces and muscular, organic sculpting, the Acura Precision Concept communicates Acura’s focus on performance and prestige through its ultra-low and wide stance, long dash-to-axle ratio, deeply sculpted surfaces and the debut of a new Diamond Pentagon grille. “The Acura Precision Concept is more than simply a concept vehicle, it is a design study model that literally will shape

the direction of all future Acura products around our Precision Crafted Performance DNA,” said Dave Marek, Acura global creative director. “The Acura Precision Concept is the leading edge of a renewed commitment to delivering Precision Crafted Performance in every facet of the product experience and creating a powerful and very exciting direction for the next generation of Acura models.” The Acura Precision Concept’s crouched and athletic stance is further emphasized by its deeply sculpted side surfaces pouring over swelling rear wheel arches covering 22-inch wheels and tires. The forwardlooking concept also features signature lighting designs – in front with its Jewel Constellation LED headlights composed of organically arranged fractal elements, and in back with floating LED taillights. A key design theme, dubbed “quantum continuum,” is seen in the seamless transition of materials and structure from the exterior to the interior of the vehicle, which is further highlighted by the absence of a b-pillar. The large door rocker panel flows into the interior side sill, transitioning into a cantilever for the floating rear seats. The rear center high-mounted stoplight

T H E AT R E ‘Bullets Over Broadway’ at Pantages & ‘Irrational Man’ on DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

Jeff Brooks (Cheech) and the cast of the North American tour of the hit musical comedy BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, written by Woody Allen featuring original direction and choreography by Susan Stroman. (Photo by Matthew Murphy “Bullets Over Broadway: The Musical,” written by Woody Allen, is based on his screenplay of the same name, co-written with Douglas McGrath. The original direction and choreography for the musical are by Susan Stroman, a five time Tony Award winner who also gave dance pizzazz to Mel Brooks’ smash hit Broadway musical “The Producers.” In Woody’s musical, the storyline revolves around the making of a 1920s Broadway show with a ‘lota’ financial help from the mob. The young, but very pretentious playwright, David Shayne (Michael Williams) is willing to do almost anything to get his play produced on Broadway. Things look up when his agent Julian Mars (Rick Grossman) links him up with Nick (Michael Corvino), a mob boss intent on making his bimbo girlfriend a star on the Great White Way. There is just one big problem. Olive (Jemma Jane) is a total ditz, with no talent whatsoever and a voice that could stop a clock as well as a

Broadway show. Horrified at the thought of her in his play, David flatly refuses, but later relents because he wants his show to go on. And maybe, he hopes, Olive will improve. No such luck. Since Olive is a flirt, Nick sends his chief hit man Cheech (Jeff Brooks) to every rehearsal to insure that Olive doesn’t misbehave. While the entire cast is uniformly good, it is Brooks (Gaston in the Disney National Tour of “Beauty and the Beast”) who steals the show. On opening night, his big song and dance number with fellow gangsters stopped the show. . Act I opens with a bang, literally, as Cheech comes out with a machine gun and blasts away, but after that the expository opening scenes slow down the momentum as we are introduced to the various characters. The “Tiger Rag” dance sequence is cute and clever, but then “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good to You,” sung by Olive and Nick, goes on too long. Things perk up again when we meet the other actors who will be in the play. Bradley Allan

Zarr is a hoot as Warner Purcell, the leading man who loves to eat. As time goes by, thanks to a variety of ‘fat suits,’ his waistline grows by leaps and bounds, but despite his ever-increasing girth, he is always light on his feet. The very elegant and beautiful Emma Stratton plays Helen Sinclair, the role that garnered Diane Wiest an Oscar. Helen also flirts with David, using the memorable line from the movie--”Don’t speak” often. She leads him on in the hope of padding her part. Hannah Rose Deflumeri also gives a show stopping performance as David’s longsuffering girlfriend who hopes to marry him one of these days And in Act II, when she sings “I’ve Found a New Baby,” she, like Brooks, receives thunderous applause. While the story is fluffy and fun on many levels, it also poses a dark question as well. As the show goes on, Cheech discovers he has a natural gift for play writing, plotting and dialogue. At one point he asks David if he ever reads magazines to see

Kaylee Olson, Carissa Fiorillo and Elizabeth Dugas (The Atta- Girls) in the North American tour of the hit musical comedy BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, written by Woody Allen featuring original direction and choreography by Susan Stroman. (Photo by Matthew Murphy) how real people talk. Soon, rather than being protective of Olive, who is a terrible actress, Cheech begins to think that the show must go on without her. But should he bump her off to make sure that the play is a hit? Unlike Mel Brook’s “The Producers, “ this show does not have an original musical score. Instead Woody Allen uses songs from the era like “Up A Lazy River,” “’Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do,” “Let’s Misbehave.” “Runnin’ Wild” and “There’ll Be Some Changes Made” (referring to script rewrites.) The final song is “Yes, We’ve Got No Bananas” which ties in with the kind of naughty “The Hot Dog Song” sung in Act I by Olive. “Bullets Over Broadway”is frothy fun, with a few dark moments and is at its best in Act II with not one, but two showstopping numbers. “Bullets Over Broadway,” at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd., L.A., through January 24, 2016 only. philosophical questions about good and evil. Phoenix (“Her”) plays Abe Lucas, a tormented philosophy professor who has come to a small college town to teach. He feels burned out. At this point, his life feels meaningless. Despite his depression, he becomes involved with two local women. One is Rita Richards (Parker Posey), a lonely professor who want him to rescue her from her unhappy marriage. He is also drawn to Jill Pollard (Emma Stone, “Birdman”) who is his best student. Soon she also becomes his best friend. Unfortunately for Jill, their relationship causes friction between her and her boyfriend Roy (James Blackley). Jill loves Roy, but is attracted by Abe’s tortured, artistic personality, coupled with his exotic past. By pure chance, everything changes for Abe and Jill when they happen to overhear a stranger’s conversation. At this point Abe makes a dramatic and profound choice that reinvigorates his enthusiasm for living once again. But his decision also sets off a series of events that will profoundly affect the lives of both Jill and Rita forever. Special features on both the Blu-ray and DVD include “On the Red Carpet: Los Angeles Film Premiere” and a Photo Gallery. The film has a running time of 95 minutes and is rated R for some language and sexual content. From Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Son of Saul and Mustang reveal promising new voices in cinema

By Pamela Price The 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, one of the largest and most respected in North America, focused on over “174 films from over 60 countries during 12 days”, according to Harold Matzner,

Festival Chairman. Among new directors ten were singled out by Variety Magazine, Son of Saul (Hungarian) directed by Laszlo Nemes and Mustang (French) directed by Deniz Gamze Erguven. Both directors delve into socially relevant themes, casting an

enlightening perspective on the Holocaust on one extreme and suppression of women’s rights on the other. Mr. Nemes was educated in Paris and New York and Ms. Erguven, a Turkish-born Paris based Director were among ten directors singled

out by Variety. During the Film Festival, on January 8 these talented ten gathered despite chilly, rainy weather at the Palm Canyon Theatre in Palm to discuss their respective films, equally thought- provoking and unsettling. Son of Saul was according to Variety one of the year’s breakthrough cinematic discoveries. The talented Mr. Nemes, made his debut at the Cannes Film Festival earning the jury’s Grand Prix for a film to “confront the Holocaust hear-on, literally revealing the human effect of Auschwitz on a conflicted person’s face.” Mustang, on the other hand, earned Ms. Gamze a Golden Globe nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film and the Critic’s Choice Award for the Best Foreign Language Film. This comingof-age drama focuses on five orphaned sisters living in rural Turkey under (surviving is a better word) under the

By Julie Buehler LA QUINTA, Ca. -We are only one week from the launch of the CareerBuilder Challenge, formerly known as the Humana Challenge and with a new title sponsor; the tournament has a new feel and is inviting more than just golf fans. Tournament organizers have described the new layout as more fan friendly, with better access to players, refreshments and fun. KMIR got one of the first looks at the newest design of the Bob Hope Memorial Trophy that one man will hoist in a few weeks to celebrate his victory in the CareerBuilder Challenge. Formerly the Humana Challenge and Bob Hope Classic, this year’s event has a new title sponsor that is looking to earn new fans of the Coachella Valley’s annual PGA Tour stop. The most notable change is the addition of the famous Stadium Course at PGA West. Bill Tait, the tournament director said, “The 17th hole on the stadium course is one of the most famous holes, frankly in the world.”

But along with a new course, the tournament, in an effort to attract casual fans as well as golf fans, has added a variety of new venues. “The other thing we did this year,” said Tait. “For the people who were here prior years is the whole Bob Hope Square area is closer to the action, so where the food venues are, the food trucks and things like that are right near the first tee and the practice range, so I think it lends itself to a more integrated experience.” And while golf fans crave that more integrated experience, casual fans are more interested in fun. “The Bob Hope Square area with the cabanas and the food trucks and the different food venues, I just think it lends itself to a fun atmosphere.” Ta i t a l s o s a y s t h e tournament is looking to draw from Los Angeles and surrounding markets, and believes having a variety of interesting events will help make the CareerBuilder Challenge broaden its appeal beyond golf fans.

Also new this year, the Coachella Valley Golf Industry Summit. Which will tackle issues affecting the sport such as declining numbers, the California drought and the intersection of golf and charity. The tournament’s director of business development, Bob Marra says, “It’s not been the best of times starting with the great recession for golf, but rumors of it’s demise, I think, are greatly exaggerated. Just take one example on a national basis: 2 million people employed in the golf industry,

$89 billion in economic impact, now that impact is greater than the combined impact of the television and film industry.” But if you’re not a golf fan, the tournament offers a variety of entertainment options, from the 19th-hole block party in Old Town La Quinta, Friday the 19th that includes live music, to the food truck festival, they’re hoping there will be something for everyone. Monday, 3 more major winners committed to playing: Angel Cabrera, Geoff Ogilvy and Webb Simpson join the

domination of their controlling grandmother and uncle. The lengths to which their family goes to objective to isolate the sisters from any semblance of freedom emerges as a “critique of Turkey” in less than subtle ways. I have to admit, their story, thanks to the genius of Ms. Gamze, brought tears to my eyes. In a larger sense, it reveals the status of women in countries that deny women even their freedom to use a phone, drive a car or refuse to obey the ritual of an arranged marriage. Both directors explore oppression, each in their own style. Top billing to both Son of Saul and Mustang as twin wake-up calls to the plight of the oppressed, wherever and whoever they are.

likes of Phil Michelson, Patrick Reed and defending champ, Bill Haas. And while those names are enough to draw golf fans, tournament officials hope their event will offer enough general appeal to draw new fans. Marra also sited a study by the Coachella Valley Visitor Bureau and said the golf industry offers the valley more than $450 million in direct economic impact, so while golfers seek the smallest number possible, the industry and this tournament is hoping to see numbers grow. Purple Room Books TV Icon Shirley Jones & Patrick Cassidy

By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA – Motion picture, stage and television icon, Shirley Jones will appear with her son, Patrick Cassidy at the famed Purple Room Palm Springs in four very special performances presented by Dick Taylor on February 11th, 12th and 13th at 7 PM, and, again on February 14th at 1 PM. The intimate setting of this legendary nightclub offers guests an upclose and personal musical and historic experience with these great performers. At her first audition in New York, Ms. Jones sang for composer Richard Rogers, who asked her to stay in the theatre so his partner, Oscar Hammerstein, could also see and hear her. It was a life-changing experience for Jones, as she was immediately signed to the only personal contract anyone had ever had with the famous team, and as a result, her career skyrocketed. Jones was cast in the film Oklahoma in the role of Laurie, followed by starring roles in Carousel, The Music Man and April Love. In a departure from

movie musicals, she created the dramatic role of prostitute Lulu Baines, playing opposite Burt Lancaster in the film Elmer Gantry, winning her first Oscar. Jones then was cast in the role that made her a household name, as the harried head of The Partridge Family in the popular television series that ran for four year. Since then, Jones has appeared in dozens of movies, television and stage roles, including a record-breaking Broadway revival of 42nd Street. She’s earned three Emmy nominations, and performs at standing-room only (SRO) symphony concerts and speaking engagements throughout the United States and the world. Patrick Cassidy is Shirley Jones’ middle son, and is a highly regarded actor, singer and director. Last summer, he starred in A Little Night Music for the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He had the honor of recreating the role his father, Jack Cassidy, originated in 1966 at the Dallas Theatre Company’s production

of It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman. Cassidy starred opposite Patti LuPone in Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway and played the lead role of Julian Marsh in 42nd Street (starring opposite his mother). Other Broadway credits include Aida, Pirates of Penzance and Leader of the Pack. Cassidy’s film credits include Longtime Companion, I’ll Do Anything, I Won’t Dance and Burning Love. On television, he has made appearances on such shows as Law and Order, Bay City Blues, Smallville and Dirty Dancing. Shirley Jones and Patrick Cassidy are a must-see combination of entertainment, music and memories. Dick Taylor Presents has been working with the Purple Room to bring in some of the biggest acts in the business. Jones and Cassidy will be at the Purple Room from February 11th through the 14th. Tickets are $90, $85 and $80 (based on seating) and are available at purpleroompalmsprings.com or by calling 800-838-3006. In the 1960s, The Purple Room at Club Trinidad was the January 13, 2016

club where Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. performed and came with their friends to eat, drink and play. The Purple Room is located at 1900 E. Palm Canyon Drive

(Hwy 111 across from Smoke Tree Village Shopping Center) in Palm Springs, CA. Closed Mondays, open at 4 daily with happy hour, bar bites and nightly entertainment.

Powerball jackpot fever grips the Coachella Valley By Carlos Herrera Powerball fever grips the Coachella Valley. With no winner this weekend, the jackpot keeps growing. Not only that, ticket sales has been even bigger than expected. Monday morning, the pot was raised another 100 million dollars and lots of people are thinking big if they win it all. “Yeah we can’t wait to win, it’s going to be ours, for sure,” Palo Alto residents Kim William and Steve Curtis said. The jackpot is now at an estimated $1.4 billion. “That’s crazy I’ve never heard of anything like that,” Rancho Mirage resident Carlos Quevedo said. Here in the valley, people rushed to the stores to buy tickets and test their luck with six numbers. Although the chances of winning the grand prize are 1 in 292.2 million, according to some, that is still a big chance to win the

jackpot. “Might as well it’s only a few dollars, I think it’s worth it,” Quevedo said. But, what exactly would people do with all that money? Some thought about their loved ones, but others thought about themselves. “We are going to buy a house in every country and a car to go with it,” Williams said. If you are feeling lucky and you are looking for a place to purchase Powerball tickets, the 7-Eleven in Palm Springs may be the place you want to purchase it. Matthew Lopez, from Palm Springs, won a million-dollar prize from a tendollar “big money” scratcher’s ticket. Lopez bought the ticket at the 7-Eleven on Sunrise Way. For some, that in itself is even more motivation, “I feel like I have a great chance of winning too,” Quevedo said. For now, all that is left to do is buy those tickets and hope you are the winner. MUSIC Titles shed light on seminal studios, guitars, music icons BY ROBERT KINSLER

Last year saw the release of a slew of noteworthy new books focused on much-loved corners of the music universe, including British recording studios, Southern California-based Taylor Guitars, Michael Jackson and more. Here is an overview of a number of the most essential titles now available.

Title: The Great British Recording Studios (Hal Leonard Books) Author: Howard Massey Tell me more: Fans of the Beatles, Kinks and other bands who comprised the British Invasion won’t be the only ones interested in grabbing “The Great British Recording Studios.” With a foreword by Sir George Martin’s providing a noteworthy kick-off, Howard Massey’s wonderful book provides an in-depth review of the growth of England’s recording studio industry following World War II, and looks at specific facilities including Abbey Road (EMI Studios), Decca, IBC and others. There are specifics about equipment used at the various studios and key recordings that were made at each. There are also stories from some of the sessions and a myriad of other points about the famed British studios that are detailed enough to thrill audiophiles and musicologists, but readable enough for the music fan who don’t have the

technical background of a studio Michael Jackson’s long career, engineer or record producer. which included the King of There are a wealth of historical Pop’s work and influence in the color and black & white photos captured inside the studios too. Information: greatbritishstudios. halleonardbooks.com.

Title: The Taylor Guitar Book (Backbeat Books) Author: Teja Gerken Tell me more: Neil Young, Jason Mraz, Damon Albarn, Zac Brown and Dave Matthews are among the many musicians who play Taylor guitars. Now the story of Taylor Guitars (based in San Diego, CA) is revealed via the wonderful Teja Gerken-penned “The Taylor Guitar Book.” Founded in 1974 (long after companies such as Gibson, Fender, Guild, Martin and Rickenbacker had seemingly cornered the market), Taylor has grown to be among the leaders of the industry while attracting the loyalty of guitarists around the globe. This colorfully-illustrated 160-page book will appeal to both casual and hardcore fans of Taylor-made acoustic and electric instruments. Information: backbeatbooks.com. Title: Michael Jackson FAQ (Backbeat Books) Author: Kit O’Toole Tell me more: Writer Kit O’Toole has taken a straightforward, but effective path in providing a bigger picture of

Tell me more: A former professor of music and director of the Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University, John Szwed proved to be the perfect author to pen the well-researched and involving “Billie Holiday: The Musician and the Myth.” Released in paperback in early 2015, the biography sheds light on Holiday’s groundbreaking role as jazz singer and early champion in the fight against racism. What emerges is that despite the troubles and challenges Holiday faced in her all-too-brief life (the New York native died at the age of 44 in 1959) was she was an artist of tremendous talent who influenced countless contemporaries and musical worlds of music, film, dance and descendants. Information: pop culture. Looking at a long penguinrandomhouse.com. career spanning his work with the Jackson 5, the Jacksons and groundbreaking solo career, Jackson’s work with Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, and even his posthumous successes (notably the 2009 documentary film “This Is It”) are also covered by O’Toole in an illustrated book stretching across 464 pages. Information: backbeatbooks. com.

Title: Billie Holiday: The Musician and the Myth (Viking) Author: John Szwed

Title: Sinatra: The Chairman (Doubleday) Author: James Kaplan Tell me more: At 992 pages, the hardcover edition of James Kaplan’s “Sinatra: The Chairman” picks up where the author left off with 2010’s “Sinatra: The Voice” and fully paints a portrait of the 20th century icon beginning the day after he picked up his Academy Award in 1954 (for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “From Here to Eternity”).

This biography is a ripe with insights into Sinatra’s last act (“Ol’ Blue Eyes” died in 1998, but would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Dec. 12, 2015) that was filled with incredible highs and lows. It takes a lot to capture one of the last century’s most dynamic and significant entertainers, and Kaplan has done that masterfully in “Sinatra: The Chairman.” Information: penguinrandomhouse.com.

Title: Don’t All Thank Me At Once: The Lost Pop Genius of Scott Miller (125 Books) Author: Brett Milano Tell me more: In a world filled with under-the-radar musical heroes, few loom larger than Scott Miller. A groundbreaking indie rocker who fronted Game Theory in the ‘80s and The Loud Family in the ‘90s. Although Miller’s insightful and intelligent style of literate songcraft has drawn comparisons with the celebrated likes of Elvis Costello and Big Star, his lost place is just now being fully realized thanks to several recent (and upcoming) reissues as well as Brett Milano’s fantastic appreciation “Don’t All Thank Me At Once: The Lost Pop Genius of Scott Miller” released in October 2015. Snow Lures People to Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

By Kitty Alvarado PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -Mount San Jacinto got dozens of inches of snow courtesy of El Niño. The snow covered mountains can be seen from almost anywhere in the desert and they’re tempting people near and far to visit and play in the fresh powder. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a popular place to see the white stuff. Greg Purdy, with the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, says on some weekends they’ve had over four hour wait times to take the ten minute ride to more than 8,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain. He says it’s been years since the tram has

14

DesertSTAR

had over two feet of snow and this has allowed the Adventure Center to open. It’s the first time in four years they’ve been able to rent skis, sleds and other snow equipment that would normally get damaged with less than two feet of snow. Despite there being equipment for rent, he says it’s a good idea to come prepared with the right type of shoes because sidewalks leading to the center get icy and slippery. Purdy says that there are days when online tickets are sold out but they only sell 10 percent of their tickets via the Internet. He says tickets are always available at the tram and they never turn anyone away. Source KMIR

The church began as a 10-member congregation when the Civil Rights Movement was at its height and being young, black and alone at night was a hazard of circumstance. As times changed, the congregation grew and so did its influence in

Cypress. When a violent murder rocks the community, the church that holds the secrets of the entire town is at risk of imploding. For it seems at Greater Hope, only God and the Devil can tell the difference between a saint and a sinner. Saints & Sinners cast announced today: • Vanessa Bell Calloway (Shameless, Coming to America) as Lady Ella, a beauty queen with a business mind and the power behind the throne as Pastor Evan

Johnson’s wife. • Clifton Powell (Ray, Murder in the First) plays Rex Fisher, a ruthless local loan shark with his hand in many of the dealings in town. • Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot, ER) as the Mayor of Cypress Pamela Clayborne, a hard-nosed former prosecutor whose secrets are catching up to her. • K e i t h Robinson (Dreamgirls, Are We There Yet?) portrays Miles Calloway, a former

R&B star, one hit wonder, now serving as the minister of music at Greater Hope. • C h r i s t i a n Keyes (Mistresses, Let’s Stay Together) as Levi, the prodigal son who returns to his hometown after a successful run on Wall Street. • R i c h a r d Lawson (Numb3rs, Wag the Dog) plays the beloved Pastor Evan Johnson who is harboring many dark doings from his faithful believers. • Jasmine Burke (The Vampire Diaries, Army Wives)

as Dr. Christie Johnson, the daughter and only living child of Pastor and Mrs. Johnson, who tends to local patients but has her own private issues. • JD Williams (The Wire, The Good Wife) portrays Jabari, Levi’s cousin who also works for Rex and is torn between family and business. • Afemo Omilami (Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Forrest Gump) as Detective St. Charles.

Confederates on the Front Porch

Facing a populist surge, a candidate finds unity to win the White House.

By Karl Rove OP/ED Partisan gridlock in Washington, the two parties at each other’s throats. The economy wracked by disruptive new technologies and jostled by rising foreign competition. A growing concern that the divide between the rich and poor is growing. If that sounds like America today, it was actually, where the country stood during the election of 1896, only things were worse. There had been five presidential elections in a row where no one received 50% of the vote. In two of them, the winner in the Electoral College lost the popular vote – and one of those contests involved a five-month dispute about the outcome in Florida. For 20 out of 24 years, the government was divided with one party holding the White House and the other controlling one or both houses of Congress. The result was stalemate on the major issues of the day. The economic divide was made worse by the lingering effects of the Civil War, which had a major impact on American politics, especially in the South where powerful myths were woven to justify secession and slavery and explain away defeat as the result of Northern barbarity and material advantage. Southern resentment of the North was exacerbated by the differences in economic modernization between the regions. The North ended the war with its manufacturing base intact while the South saw most its factories and much of its agricultural production disrupted. The economic disparity only increased as the economic growth in the North and Midwest outstripped that in the South in the decades after the Civil War. At the time, many Southern farmers were forced to participate in the crop lien scheme where local “furnishing merchants” supplied them with necessities in return for title to their crops. At “settlin’ time” when the harvest came in, the farmers’ debts routinely exceed the value of their crops, making them “another day old and deeper in debt.” In 1896, both Democratic and Republican candidates addressed these economic concerns. William Jennings Bryan, the 36-year old Democratic nominee, lashed the Northern Money Power, Wall Street and the foreign financial houses on

which the U.S., a developing country, relied for investment. His was a negative campaign which deliberately pitted class again class and region against region, with Bryan calling the industrial East “the enemy’s country.” By contrast, his opponent, Republican William McKinley, deliberately struck a note of national reconciliation, saying that Americans were in this together. The fortunes of labor and capital were inexorably tied. This led McKinley to emphasize both economic and national unity. One way the McKinley campaign showcased these appeals was to do something that no Republican presidential candidate had done since the end of the Civil War: meet with a group of ex-Confederates. On the afternoon of October 9, two large trainloads arrived in Canton, Ohio, McKinley’s hometown, disgorging thousands of men, many in butternut or grey uniforms, along with their families. These were Confederate veterans, mostly from Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, where McKinley had fought at first as an enlisted man and then, after battlefield promotions for valor, as an officer with the 23rd Ohio. Rev. Abram P. Funkhouser of Harrisonburg, Virginia, had organized the Southerners. The former rebels were met at the depot by a mounted honor escort, a Grand Army of the Republic band and several hundred Union veterans in their blue wartime uniforms. The wives of the GAR members presented the Southerners an elaborate silk banner to mark the visit. Then with the band blaring and American flags flying, the Southerners marched to the Tabernacle, a local meeting hall, where Canton

women served lunch to the men and their families as they waited for one more trainload of their comrades to arrive. Each ex-Confederate was given a knife from Canton’s Novelty Cutlery Co. engraved with the American flag, McKinley’s portrait and the words, “No East, No West, No North, No South, the Union Forever.” There were matching badges, with ribbons half blue and half grey, topped with a red, white and blue rosette, and bearing a similar sentiment with a medallion featuring portraits of McKinley and his running mate, Garrett Hobart. By 4:30 P.M., the final train had arrived and Southern men gathered in the Stark County Courthouse Square behind their new banner that read “United We Stand.” The reverse displayed an American eagle resting on a shield with the words, “Presented to the ex-Confederate Veterans of the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, by the ex-Union Veterans of Canton, Ohio.” They were joined by groups of Union veterans and Northern and Southern units mingled together, the men formed up behind bands and flag bearers and then marched up North Market Street. The sidewalks were packed with cheering spectators, standing under billowing flags and patriotic bunting. Many people were weeping as former battlefield adversaries marched together in a display of national unity. The march ended at a stage built on McKinley’s lawn; a crowd jammed the intersection to witness the historic moment. McKinley was moved by the presence of men he may have faced in battle. His remarks were deeply personal. “Patriotism is not bound by State, or class,

or sectional lines,” he told the Southerners, “we are a reunited country. We have but one flag… Sectionalism was surrendered at Appomattox.” His campaign stood for “Country first, Country last and Country with stainless honor.” McKinley noted this was the first time a Republican presidential candidate had met with ex-Confederates and urged veterans North and South to support “the enthronement of justice and the supremacy of law.” The crowd cheered what was an intensely emotional moment, both for McKinley and the former combatants. Speeches over, the Southern men filed across the porch to shake the Republican Presidential candidate’s hand before returning to the Tabernacle for dinner. The Confederate veteran bands offered a concert in the Courthouse Square before their trains left for Virginia at midnight. It is hard now from a distance of nearly 120 years to understand what a powerful moment this had been. America had not seen the like of it since Lee surrendered to Grant 31 years before. And that McKinley – who had enlisted as a private at age 18 to answer Lincoln’s call to save the Union and then fought through to the war’s conclusion, ending the conflict as a major – had caused such an event to happen spoke volumes about his character and purpose. Four weeks later, McKinley was elected the 25th president of the United States with the largest popular margin since Grant’s reelection in 1872. And while the divide between North and South was not erased, sectional tensions eased, the bitterness of the war receded and nearly four decades of Republican dominance followed. Such was the result of a remarkable campaign in which one candidate sought to bring the country together while another was willing to tear it apart to win. Mr. Rove, a former deputy chief of staff for President George W. Bush, helped organize the political-action committee American Crossroads. He is the author of “The Triumph of William McKinley: Why the Election of 1896 Still Matters.”

Sean Penn: Nothing to hide over drug lord interview

(AP Photo/Eduardo Verdugo). Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is made to face the press as he is escorted to a helicopter in handcuffs by Mexican soldiers and marines at a federal hangar in Mexico City, Mexico, Friday, Jan. 8, 2016. By Maria Verza And Frank Bajak MEXICO CITY - Actor Sean Penn said he has “nothin’ to hide,” after images published Monday indicated he was under surveillance when he met with the Mexican actress who led him to Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman - and the pair was apparently followed and photographed as they set out for the supposedly secret meeting with the drug lord. In a brief email exchange with The Associated Press, Penn also dismissed criticism over his interview with the fugitive, who was captured on Friday, a day before Penn’s 10,000-word story was published in Rolling Stone magazine. Mexican officials have said that contacts between Guzman’s lawyers and Penn and actress Kate del Castillo helped them track down the fugitive and they raided his hideout in rural Durango state a few days after their Oct. 2 meeting. Guzman evaded authorities then, but was finally captured after a shootout Friday in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa. Penn wrote in the Rolling Stone article of elaborate security precautions, including switching phones. As he flew to Mexico for the meeting, he wrote, “I see no spying eyes, but I assume they are there.” He was right - and they had apparently been following del Castillo for months based on contacts with Guzman’s lawyers. The Mexican newspaper El Universal published 10 images Monday that appeared to show Penn being monitored as he arrived in Mexico. In the photographs, Penn, wearing dark glasses and a baseball cap, is shown arriving with del Castillo at an airport, then at a hotel, and greeting the men who apparently took them to a small airstrip, from which they flew to the jungle camp to meet Guzman. The newspaper said the photos were part of a Mexican government intelligence file it had obtained. Asked about the images Monday, Penn would only say: “I’ve got nothin’ to hide.” www.desertstarweekly.com

The actor also shrugged off a suggestion that he was “taking hits” for agreeing to submit his article to Guzman prior to publication by Rolling Stone. “No, you’re reading hits,” he said in the email exchange with the AP. In the article, Penn said Guzman requested no changes. Penn stressed that he doesn’t think his communications were tracked, and in an interview with a local radio station, Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez said that Mexican investigators were following the movements of one of Guzman’s lawyers, not necessarily Penn or del Castillo. Asked whether Penn or del Castillo were under investigation, Gomez said a “new line” of inquiry had been opened that could include them or Guzman’s lawyers, and could involve “covering up” for Guzman “or something bigger.” In an article accompanying the photos, El Universal said Mexican agents were aware of and following del Castillo’s contacts with Guzman’s lawyers since at least June. Del Castillo has not commented, but Penn wrote in Rolling Stone that Guzman was interested in having a movie made of his life and wanted del Castillo, who had portrayed a drug trafficker in a Mexican television series, involved in the project. It was not Penn’s first foray into Latin American life and politics. The actor has become known in the region for befriending leftist leaders, including late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales in Bolivia. In 2008, he interviewed President Raul Castro for The Nation just after Barack Obama was elected U.S. president in what was billed as the Cuban leaders’ first interview with a foreign journalist. He has also been widely hailed for the charity he founded in Haiti after its devastating 2010 earthquake. Guzman’s capture came six months after his dramatic escape through a mile-long tunnel he dug from his cell at the maximumsecurity Altiplano prison, west of Mexico City.

A movie based loosely on that stunning caper was scheduled to debut Sunday in Mexico. Originally titled: “Chapo: The escape of the century,” the name was changed Monday to “Capo: The escape of the century,” for what director Axel Uriegas said were production reasons. Monday evening, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto referenced Guzman’s capture

in a short new year’s message to the nation. “The detention of the world’s most wanted criminal is a credit to the coordination of our institutions in favor of security and the rule of law,” Pena Nieto said. “With this action, 98 of the 122 most dangerous criminals no longer present a threat to society and we are going for all of them.” Mexico has begun the process of extraditing Guzman to the United States, where he faces drug-trafficking charges, but that could take “a year or longer” because of legal challenges, said the head of Mexico’s extradition office, Manuel Merino. He cited one extradition case that took six years. In the meantime, Guzman, who faces drug-trafficking and organized crime charges in Mexico, was being held at the same prison he escaped from in July. A Mexican security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said the drug lord is being held in a different cell and that the tunnel he built and the cell he escaped from had been destroyed. On Monday, the prison was ringed by soldiers, some riding in armored personnel carrier,

as well as marines and federal police. G u z m a n ’s powerful Sinaloa cartel smuggles multiton shipments of cocaine and marijuana as well as manufacturing and transporting methamphetamines and heroin, mostly to the U.S. He is wanted in several U.S. states. Guzman’s attorney Juan Pablo Badillo has said the defense has already filed six motions to challenge extradition requests. Badillo said that his client shouldn’t be extradited to the U.S. because “our country must respect national sovereignty, the sovereignty of its institutions to impart justice.” In the interview in Rolling Stone, Guzman defended his role as the head of the world’s biggest drug-trafficking organization, blamed for thousands of killings. When asked if he is to blame for high addiction rates, he responded: “No, that is false, because the day I don’t exist, it’s not going to decrease in any way at all.” Associated Press writer Frank Bajak reported from Lima, Peru. Associated Press writer Natalia Cano in Mexico City contributed to this report. Source KMIR
