By Desert Star Staff Iran and six leading world powers signed a comprehensive plan for ending international sanctions against Iran in exchange for putting restrictions on its controversial nuclear program. RT takes a look at the groundbreaking document.

The deal signed in Vienna on Tuesday is meant to break a 12-year standoff over Iran’s

nuclear activities, which some nations claimed involved military research. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) acknowledges Iran’s right for peaceful nuclear development on par with any other signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The agreement provides for a joint commission to be established to monitor the

implementation of the action plan and handle dispute situations. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is tasked with verifying voluntary nuclear-related measures by Iran. Iran and the six nations – China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and the US, are to hold ministerial-level meetings at least once every two years to monitor the progress.

Baby Giraffe Born at Living Desert Expected to be on Exhibit This Weekend

The public could get its first look at the new baby this weekend when the calf is expected to go on public display at the Zoo.

The Dance Competition

Story and Photo by Pat Krause The 16th annual Desert Classic DanceSport Championships were held at the J W Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa on July 9th thru the 12th. The event started on Thursday with a huge amount of categories in all types of dance.

Cha-cha, Rumba, Disco, Foxtrot, Swing, Tango, Waltz, Quick Step, Jive, Samba and the Paso Doble were only a few of the many dances performed. This event equals anything you see on TV on Dancing with the Stars.

The quality of the dancing, the sequined costumes, the hair-dos, men’s and boys outfits rival those seen on TV, only these dancers you can watch in person.

There were age groups for all dancers every day.

Awards were presented after each section of dancing. One of my favorites was the young children as the main event on Sunday afternoon. These kids are amazing to watch. You can tell they have been dancing and practicing for years, and you can see its something they really love to be that good at such a young age. Every dancer vied to win a prize. Trophies were given out for participation, and the children proudly displayed their awards and posed for photos in their

brightly-colored costumes.

Organizers are Igor and Irini Suvorov, who are themselves dancers and teachers. Dance teachers, Professional and Amatuer dancers vie for prizes.

Teachers danced with their students, and Pros danced with dancers of all ages. The contestants came from all over the west, CA, UT, WA and Canada to name just a few of the surrounding states. Some dancers fell in love with dancing as an exercise program and continued on to competition.

Children either saw it on TV or had parents or friends involved with ballroom dancing. Most of the dancers competed in more than one type of dance that went from a hip swinging salsa, quick stepping jive, the fast swing and to a smooth waltz.

This is a serious competition as judges surrounded the dance floor and kept an eagle eye on each dancer. The judges came from all over the US and Canada, there were celebrity judges from TV shows, Dancing with the Stars, and So You Think You Can Dance. I noticed Louis Van Amstel from Dancing with the Stars watching intently as each dance was performed. There were over 1000 dancers who competed. Families and friends

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Over 5000 people attended the 7th annual Palm Tree and Tattoo event. People gathered at the Hard-Rock Hotel for the weekend event. Almost 50 vendors graced the lower level at the Hard-Rock Hotel in the Ballroom area. The vendors were busy every day applying tattoos.

Every tattoo artist was seen giving a tattoo on almost every part on the body. Tattoos were on the top at the head on the bottom of the leg and everywhere in between. A DJ played hardrock music for enjoyment for people as they strolled through the aisles to either watch people getting tattooed or getting one.

Seeing what is new or different style of tattoos was of great interest. Guests got to use the outdoor pool as well and there was a DJ for listening.

The pool was filled with people with varying types and sizes of body art, some with their whole back or arms covered in colorful tattoos. There were also vendors selling tattoo supplies, T-shirts, hats, piercing, hand weights, silkscreen shirts, and foods. There was a cash bar set up for those that wanted a little more than water to drink. Guests could get a make-believe tattoo or a real one or get one removed.

Vendors gave out special rates just for this event and came from all over the West. One Vendor had a special where you could get a free tattoo with a $20 tip, but it had to be one of the many

styles, and they were small.

It gave people a place to try a tattoo for a reasonable amount.

You could even get a tattoo on your motorcycle.

Women in skimpy tops and shorts and men in sleeveless T-shirts seemed to be the normal wear as everyone wanted to show off his beautiful body tattoo artistry. Many tattoo artists are very gifted in giving just the right design tattoo. Giving a tattoo is an art and those giving the tattoo must be extremely brilliant in that area. A tattoo can be very expensive as some vendors sell by the tattoo, The amount of colors used, or by the hour. I asked the rates most charge for a tattoo, and they said it normally runs $150 per hour and up for a big tattoo. Others charge by the tattoo itself and how intricate the tattoo will be. The price depends on the tattoo or the artist and his experience. Tattoos are not cheap.

Guadeloupe Ponte, owner of Scar Treatment Recovery Center, said it is very important to really know if you want a tattoo.

She had temporary tattoos that would last 7 days, even in water to make sure. Guadeloupe said there is now a laser tattoo removal machine that is less painful for tattoo removal.

There are tattoos that will cover a bad tattoo after one is removed. Guadeloupe said she was doing a video of the event in hopes of getting it on a reality TV show.

Dancers filled the ballroom. Those guests who heard about or new about this competition were awed by the amazing ability of all the dancers. This is one event everyone should come and watch.

TV has had a big impact on ballroom dancing and the many forms of dance. It’s a fun form of recreation and creates an interest in competition.

This event is only one of many dance competitions across the country. These dancers are sometimes as good as the most professional you see on TV. Their performances go as far as the way they portray the dance on their faces.

at every competition. Dance is something everyone can do from very young children to the older generation.

and financial advisors typically encourage sole proprietors who are the only employees of their respective firms to set up SEP-IRA plans. Yet the primary reason for this advice is that most professionals giving it, are unfamiliar with solo 401(k) Solo plans, which is a very compelling alternative to SEP plans.

The primary benefit of the SEP-IRA is that it’s simplified (as the name implies) and very little expense or paperwork is involved in the setup, implementation, and administration of the plan.

The benefit of 401K Solo plans are that they are protected from bankruptcy under ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974), whereas the SEP-IRA is not.

The Bankruptcy Act of 2005 generally protects all 401(k) Plan assets from creditor attack in a bankruptcy proceeding.

In addition, most states offer greater creditor protection to a Solo 401(k) plan than a SEP IRA outside of bankruptcy.

The SEP-IRA is different than a 401K Solo, because only the employer can contribute to the plan. It provides business owners with a simplified method to contribute toward their employees’ as well as their own retirement savings, unlike a traditional IRA. SEP-IRAs offers greater contribution limits than Traditional IRA, whose maximum contribution limits annually are $5,500 IRA limit or $6,500 for those age 50 or older, whereas

doctor friend) prescribe a “comfort animal”. The Fair Employment and Housing Council is working on regulations which hopefully will provide important guidance and protect those who need help while curbing abuses by those who don’t.

SEP-IRA can be as high as 25% of compensation or $53,000 for 2015, whichever is less (20% in the case of a sole proprietorship or single member LLC).

The Solo 401K allows employees to contribute to their plan. Entrepreneurs who use solo 401Ks can save up to 25% of their compensation in addition to their 2015 contribution limit of $18,000 or $24,000 for those over the age of 50, to a maximum of $59.000. The contributions can be made in pre-tax or aftertax to a Roth-IRA. With IRAs, those who earn high incomes are disallowed from contributing to a Roth IRA or converting their IRA to a Roth IRA. The Solo 401(k) plan contains a built-in Roth sub-account which can be contributed to without any income restrictions.

With a Roth Solo 401(k) subaccount, you can make Roth type contributions while having the ability to make significantly greater contributions than with an IRA. Another significant benefit of the Solo 401(k) plan is that it does not require the participant to hire a bank or trust company to serve as trustee. A Solo 401(k) plan avoids the cost of custodian fees, eliminating the expense and delays associated with an IRA custodian, enabling you to act quickly when the right investment opportunity presents itself.

Dear Mr. Richardson: In my previous letters of complaints to my HOA, I refer to the CC&R’s and bylaws of the specific rules of annoyance referring to the dog next door. Whereas before they took action, this time they replied in a letter saying that my complaint of the howling dog seems to be an ongoing neighbor to neighbor dispute and needs a “third” party complaint, although other neighbors hear the howling, including one who is on the board. They are reluctant to complain due to fear of retaliation.

I keep reminding the HOA that it is their responsibility to enforce the rules. Do I have a legal right to stop paying my dues until this annoyance is resolved?

Consider asking your neighbor to participate with you in an “Internal Dispute Resolution” meeting. Your association is required to have IDR rules. If not, the Civil Code provides an IDR procedure at Section 5910.

Do not withhold your assessments in protest. Even if the association breaches the governing documents and its duties to you, the courts have ruled against offsetting your assessment payments against a debt the HOA owes. That will result in penalties and collection costs against you, and make your problems worse.

Fracking Risk to CA is Aquifer Contamination

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif A new report says hydraulic fracturing can contaminate groundwater when the excess water is not properly disposed of, but is not linked to earthquakes in California.

In January, a study by the Seismological Society of America linked a series of earthquakes in Ohio to fracking, and there have been similar claims in other states as well.

The new study released Thursday comes from the California Council on Science and Technology and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Jane Long, the

lead scientific researcher, says hydraulic fracturing poses some safety concerns but they’re manageable. “A lot of things people were concerned about are things that are not as big a problem as they think they are,� says Long. “And some of the practices are things that need to change and need more attention.�

The report says the oil companies should phase out percolation ponds used to dispose of excess water because toxic fracking chemicals can get into the aquifer. And it recommends companies put aside about a third of the chemicals currently in use

because there’s not enough data about them.

The Center for Biological Diversity points to the finding that oil operations can pollute the air in their immediate vicinity. Long is optimistic that the report will spur further reforms. “Some of them are going to be recommendations that will be very easy to act on right away and I think they will be acted on and some of them are going to require some process,� she says.

The report was required by the 2013 passage of State Senate Bill 4, which established new safety measures for fracking, rules that went into effect on July 1.

By Desert Star Staff BARSTOW, Calif. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A newlyreleased poll shows two-thirds of registered voters who live in and around Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desert regions treasure their desert environments, and approve of the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP).

The project covers 22 million acres with the goal of planning for renewable energy development, and conservation of land and wildlife. Pollster Lori Weigel with Public Opinion Strategies says backing for the desert plan was strong in every county involved, and even stronger among those who were just learning about the plan.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of things they love there is wildlife,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These are areas where residents feel thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enough room for things to happen simultaneously.â&#x20AC;? The survey data indicates an absence of a political party divide, with preference for wind and solar projects on already-disturbed land, and opposition to mining on land within the project area.

Two polling firms conducted the research, which was commissioned by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Public Opinion Strategies is considered a Republican company, while David Metz represents FM3, a Democratic research company

that also conducted the poll. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have three out of five conservative Republicans and more than four out of five liberal Democrats telling us theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re supportive of the DRECP, and all ranges of independent and centrist voters in between,â&#x20AC;? says Metz. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is one of those rare issues that seems to bring people together across party lines, as opposed to dividing them.â&#x20AC;? The polling also found broad support for conservation based on historical and cultural values.

NFL Player Holds Free Football Camp in Palm Desert

By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- A youth football camp was held at Palm Desert High School on Saturday.

Current NFL defensive back and Palm Desert graduate, James Dockery, organized the event. He also brought some of his friends.

Dockery enjoys giving back to his alma mater and spending time with the program during the offseason.

At the Aztecs football field, James held the first annual James Dockery Youth Football Clinic.

James enlisted the help of some NFL buddies who were also in attendance.

“For the older guys it’s fun.

For example, we had a corner here from the Carolina Panthers here Josh Norman, Jordan Poyer from the Browns, Keith McGuil

from the Raiders... So all of us know each other from college and the pros, but for us to just to hang out... and work out and give back to the kids is really fun for us. Just to hang out with some NFL guys I think is something they’ll remember.”

The free, all-day event was open to kids form all over the valley.

The clinic included a morning session for 6-13 year olds, and an afternoon session for those 14 and up.

James says all the youngsters were excited even though they see him pretty often.

“Our Palm Desert guys, they see me all the time. So, to them, I don’t think it’s too much of a big deal, but I think for everybody else, they’re having fun.” Source KMIR

Greek crisis endgame: EU agrees to allocate €80bn+

By Desert Star Staff After 17 hours of marathon talks, the eurozone leaders have reached an agreement over a third three-year bailout for debtridden Greece worth around €8286 billion, which averts the risk of the country leaving the eurozone.

In his Twitter account the President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that agreement on Greece was reached “unanimously”. All of the key participants in the talks acknowledged that the deal means a so-called Grexit was no longer on the agenda.

The program will affect the overall pension reform, reform of the product markets, privatization and changes in labor exchanges, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel after the eurozone summit Monday.

“We have been long engaged in the matter of the size of the program, which is very significant - from €82 to €86 billion over three years,” she said at a news conference.

A write-off of Greece’s debt is not on the agenda, she added.

“It has been agreed to start negotiations on an (European Stability Mechanism) ESM program, which means continued financial support for Greece,” said Tusk. “The decision gives Greece the chance to get back on track with the support of European

partners,” he said, adding there would be”strict conditions.”

Greece agreed to set up a €50 billion fund to repay its debt, said Eurogroup President JeroenDijsselbloem.

“The target size of the fund, which will accumulate assets of Greece, will be €50 billion, and it will be based in Greece.

This will create a fund to which funds will be transferred, which will then be monetized through their privatization or commercial use. The fund will be aimed at solving the debt problem, or debt reduction, and it can be used to recapitalize banks,” said Dijsselbloem.

The problem of the recapitalization of banks is one of the key challenges for the eurozone, according to Dijsselbloem. This will require about €25 billion, half of the €50 billion fund, he added.

The European Commission will provide the Greek economy with €35 billion in investments, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker added.

The Greek parliament has to approve all the reform laws

by July 15 in order to receive the aid, said Dijsselbloem. The final conclusion of the negotiations on the development of the third program of aid to Athens will require a few more weeks, he added.

The markets and the euro started growing after the Greek agreement. A composite Stoxx Europe 600 Index grew by 1.1 percent at the opening, with the euro rallying to $1,1147 from a Friday reading of $1,1162.

The results achieved at the eurozone summit allow Greece to return to the path of growth, Merkel commented at a press conference after the meeting.

“All in all, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages…I think that Greece has a chance to return to the path of growth,” Merkel said.

“We’ve made a good step to build confidence, but there [are] still a lot of steps to implement

the achieved,” says IMF Chief Christine Lagarde.

The agreement is complex, but Greece avoided the transfer of its state property abroad, as well as financial strangulation and destruction of the financial system, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras commented.

H o w e v e r, a f o r m e r Greek ambassador Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos says the new deal is “too tough, too late, the death of Greeks.” Despite the concessions the EU has made to Greece the country is far from being out of the crisis, he told RT. “These absurd measures do no t reflect the EU we entered back in 1981. It has actually made Greece a colony of Germany, not to say of the European Union,” he said.

Last Thursday Tsipras submitted a new reform plan to its so-called troika of creditors – the IMF, the ECB and the European Commission. When bargaining over a new deal, the PM was asking for a €53.5 billion bailout package over the next three years.

The Greeks voted 61 percent against a bailout package of new austerity measures at a national referendum on July 5.

It put Greece on the verge of leaving the eurozone, hastened negotiations, and led to the resignation of Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis.

By Anthony Grant Sometimes all you need to cut the desert heat down to size is a short stay in a bastion of cool: the Valley Ho in Scottsdale, Ariz. is just such a solution. And lest you think Palm Springs has a monopoly on the mid-century modern vibe, recall that the 1950s happened everywhere, and for a truly unique evocation of that decade’s design details, you really should make your way across the ethereal Sonoran Desert to Scottsdale and what it is undoubtedly its most compelling

hotel destination. Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner obviously thought so: after all, the Hollywood couple had their private wedding reception here in 1957.

The hotel, which is large (191 rooms total), had opened the year prior and quickly became a star attraction in its own right and a favored hideaway spot for celebrities wishing to escape the spotlight of L.A. and even Palm Springs, about a three-and-onehalf hour drive away. A huge renovation was completed in 2008 and though more is on the

way, both the guestrooms and common areas sparkle as if they opened yesterday. The rooms that face one of the two swimming pools (one larger and more social, the other more for the quiet crowd) are fine, but I recommend the splashier trappings of one of the Tower guest rooms or suites.

There are 48 of these, and you can get a great view over the hotel grounds and dramatic sunrises over the desert floor from up here. Also, from in the front you have quick access to the VH Spa and ZuZu, the Valley

MUSIC Todd Frazier, MLB Both Winners in 2015 Home Run Derby

By Dan Marinelli Cincinnati, OH – There was a playoff atmosphere at Cincinnati Reds’ Great American Ballpark on Monday, but oddly, it is nowhere near October.

No, these cheers were for Cincinnati’s Todd Frazier, narrowly edging out Los Angeles Dodgers’ rookie Joc Pederson 15-14, to win the newly overhauled MLB Home Run Derby.

The cheers were not solely for Frazier, who is now the backto-back Derby champion. The claps, oohs and ahs were also for the increased entertainment value of an event that, up until last year, was considered long and boring.

Essentially, the All-Star week event was glorified batting practice. Not to mention a participant could hit more homeruns in the first round than the eventual winner did in all three combined, but still lose the derby because he was too tired in the last round.

This was different, with a new commissioner comes new and fun ideas, apparently.

The MLB left the old top-fouradvance method and now, seed each batter one though eight, with one facing eight, two facing seven and so on.

Four minutes was all the players were allotted in each individual round. Each batter received one time out at the time of the players choosing, a quick break when the four minutes ended and an extra 30 seconds tacked on to account for arbitrary time wasted during the round.

Unlike the NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest, the MLB does receive good participation from the game’s top talent. Joining Frazier and Pederson was Albert Pujols (Angels), Josh Donaldson (Blue Jays), Joc Pederson, Prince Fielder (Rangers), Kris Bryant (Cubs) and Manny Machado (Orioles).

All top four seeds (Pujols, Frazier, Donaldson and

Pederson) advanced to the semifinal, with Pederson and Frazier advancing to the final.

Frazier ended the regulation, tied 14-14 with Pederson but in the extra 30-second time period, Frazier put the event to rest.

The 2015 Home Run Derby was will go down as one of the more significant in MLB history.

To out this into perspective, with timed rounds, the eight batters hit 159 homeruns, the most all-time, breaking the previous record by 51.

The overall reception was positive and but for some minor improvements, look for the derby to be identical next year. Bravo, Todd Frazier, for taking home the trophy in 2015, but an even bigger congratulations belongs to Major League Baseball for remodeling their flagship, nongame, All-Star event.

T R AV E L Northern Ireland – The Land of Castles, Legends & Myths

PART ONE:

How lucky can one travel writer be? I’ll tell you how lucky.

I was the only American journalist invited on a recent press trip to Northern Ireland. The select group of writers flew in from all over the world including, India, South Africa, Sweden, Holland, and Germany. This opportunity was especially exciting since I had already been to the Republic of Ireland on three previous press trips, covering most of the southeast and southwest.

Exploring Belfast, and the surrounding towns, was a new experience that I was very much looking forward to.

As a result of the people, places, and historic sites we visited, there is vast amount of material to be shared, so much so, that my coverage will be divided into three parts, and will include fascinating visits with royals living both in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland.

Day 1: The theme of this particular press trip was “Houses, Castles & Ruins,” so the first visit on our packed itinerary was to the 800-year old Carrickfergus Castle. It is a Norman fortress located north of Belfast, in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim. Its position, overlooking Belfast Lough,* made it easy to defend itself from invading armies from Scotland, England, Ireland, and France. The castle played an important military role

during World War I. Although the stronghold was finally decommissioned in 1928, it served as an air raid shelter during World War II, and remains one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Ireland.

During medieval times, many banquets were held in the castle’s Viking Hall. The etiquette customs were somewhat different from the etiquette customs of today. For example, you were expected to bring your own cutlery, which would be an eating knife and a spoon. However, most of the food was eaten using hands.

It was considered polite to cut each other’s food, which was served in long trenchers and was scooped out by hand, with bread used to absorb any liquids.

If your host offered you a knife, it was a mark of great respect.

At one point, everyone shared a goblet, so it was considered good manners to wipe your mouth before drinking from the communal goblet. Banquet guests were seated in order of their rank, with the lowest at the far end of the table. I have not been able to verify this, but our guide told us that if you needed to wipe food off your mouth, you simply leaned over to the person sitting next to you and used his sleeve.

For those of us who sighed at the relationship between Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot, I hate to dispel that romantic image, but please bear in mind that both the church and the king frowned upon bathing.

It was believed that a bath was dangerous and immoral, leading to sin and debauchery. One royal, Lady Anne, defied that tradition and actually bathed four times a year – each at the start of a new season. Life expectancy?

Age 40.

Bathroom habits were not much more civilized than the dining habits. A hole was cut into the concrete for the king to sit upon. The excrement simply

It is thought that Queen Victoria actually introduced the idea of chamber pots, known as piss pots, which certainly beat sitting on a cement hole.

Our lodgings for the next few nights would be at the Malmaison Hotel, a four-star boutique luxury hotel centrally located in Belfast on Victoria Street. Formerly a Victorian warehouse, the hotel is a short walk to the Victoria Square Shopping Mall, as well as restaurants and coffee shops.

The staff was cordial, the rooms were small, but clean, and the bathroom had a few essential toiletries. My only criticism is the low lighting. It was so dark that I needed to use my cell phone flashlight to find things in the closet. Putting on makeup was nearly impossible as there was not enough light anywhere in the room or the bathroom to actually see what you were doing. It would be helpful if management could “shine a light” on that problem.

were off and running to explore the Causeway Coastal Route, one of the world’s top five road trips. As we drove along to our next destination, which was to be a visit to Glenarm Castle and its famous Walled Garden, our eyes feasted upon on a profusion of beautiful daffodils and yellow and orange wildflowers that dotted the roadside.

One of the oldest castles in Ireland, and only 40 minutes from Belfast, and a mere 18 miles from Scotland, the Jacobean-style mansion is quite imposing. It was home to the Earls of Antrim for over 400 years. Glenarm Castle is the home of Viscount and Viscountess Dunluce (the McDonnells) and their children.

Prior to living in Glenarm, their ancestors lived at Dunluce Castle, which was set afire so a robbery could take place. The current castle is filled with Irish furniture and the walls are covered with portraits of family members going back to the 17th century. Its major business is the Glenarm Organic Salmon Ltd., the only Atlantic salmon farm in the Irish Sea, and a major source of the world’s finest organic salmon.

Cattle and ewes are also raised organically. They are fed clover and grass resulting in organic Beef Shorthorn, said to be superior to the famous Kobe beef.

The farm’s beef and lamb have won several prestigious awards and is served in outstanding restaurants throughout Ireland, including the Merchant Hotel’s, The Great Room, which I’ll tell you about in Part 2.

A most delightful head gardener, Andrew Morrow, with a glint in his eye, and the subtle Irish humor, shared his wonderful story, very similar to the story of Sabrina Fair. Like Sabrina, his dad worked as a chauffeur for 50 years, so he, too, grew up on the estate. When the head gardener passed away, Lady Antrim asked him to take over his duties. He was quite surprised and said: “I can’t even take care of myself.”

But he was trained and is now in total charge of the sprawling gardens. He took us on a guided tour of the magnificent grounds, explaining that the walled garden supplied the castle with fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year. His love and passion for gardening was quite apparent. At the end of our horticultural experience, Andrew said, “Gardening is in the DNA of the Irish.”

Following the garden adventure, Andrew then took us on an exclusive tour of the house, which is only open occasionally to the public. He told an interesting story about a “weigh chair.” It seems that guests were weighed before they entered the dining room, their poundage measured in stones. The very same guests were weighed on their way out to make sure they didn’t steal any of the silverware. I suppose there was no accounting for the amount of food consumed at dinner, which may have inched up the weight a stone or two.

Next, we were treated to tea, which was served by a cheerful, very efficient George the butler, who shared stories about the family. The family stays only three months a year, as it revolves around the school year for their two children – Alex nine and Helena seven. The children love gardening and every morning get fresh eggs from the chickens.

Fortified with tea and treats, we were off to have lunch in the beautiful French Rooms located in Bushmills, once a thriving linen-producing center. It should be noted that by the end of the 19th century, Belfast was the linen capital of the world. Its dominance ended during the “troubles” that started in the 60s and it has never recovered.

Back to our lunch. We were served a Gourmet Grocer Platter with food from local Irish artisans and specialty French produce.

By Jackie Devereaux PALM SPRINGS, CA– Tattoo enthusiasts, some stripped down to tiny bikinis or short shorts, strutted their colorful inked skin at the Palm Trees and Tattoo Convention held at the Hard Rock Hotel last weekend.

While hundreds of proud tattoo lovers gathered poolside to show off their bodies etched with colorful images from head to toe, others lined up to get unwanted tattoos removed by a laser.

Body Art application was the main trust of the convention.

Tattoo artists from all over the region showcased their talent during this three-day event.

There also was a special booth for permanent makeup application, a poolside cabana for bling-bling tattoos, and free laser tattoo removal inside the spa for those who wanted to erase a bad decision.

Guadalupe Ponte, owner of the Scar Treatment Recovery Center (STRC) in Palm Desert, set up the Q-Switch Alexandrite, a state-of-the-art, laser machine inside the Rock Spa. Registered nurses performed the laser procedures free to participants who shared compelling stories about why they wanted their tattoos removed. Those chosen also agreed to appear on Ponte’s new reality TV pilot filmed during the convention.

In the past, tattoos were darkly associated with people who lived on society’s edge – gang members, bikers and hardened ex-cons who covered their bodies with ink to show their

affiliations or brute toughness.

However, that perception has changed drastically over the past ten years. Today, tattoos are considered de rigueur – if you don’t have one, then you’re not hip, slick and cool. Women who use to cringe at the idea of getting a tattoo, now show off their colorful flower, butterfly or star on their shoulder or back.

Some venture even further getting full body tattoos. But not everyone is happy with their tattoos and want to change them.

“There are several reasons why someone wants a tattoo removed,” Ponte said. “Peer pressure from family or loved ones, a lifestyle change, bad artistry, or to cover-up a bad decision made in their youth. Others want them removed because they can’t find a job, and many outgrow their tattoos and decide to change them,” Ponte added.

“An even deeper reason is that receiving tattoos is a form of fixation. They feel pain to release emotional pain, and therefore it is addicting,” Ponte added. “Many people who suffer from eating disorders, early childhood abuse, drug addiction and other maladies find tattooing an outlet for their pain,” she added. Ponte’s reality TV show is geared to help people deal with these difficult issues.

If you’re interested in getting a tattoo, think it through, Ponte said. Don’t be spontaneous, know what you want beforehand. Make sure you get it performed by a responsible tattoo artist with a verifiable tract record. Go see his or her work first, then decide.

Mexican kingpin Guzman enjoying life after escape

Two photos, allegedly of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, who escaped the Altiplano high security prison on the weekend, have been leaked online.

The photos were published

by ElBlogDelNarco, a blog about fighting drug crime in Mexico, and reportedly sent by one of his sons after the leader of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel escaped. In one Guzman is seen sitting in a plane cockpit while in the other he is relaxing with

a bottle of beer in his hand.

The legitimacy of the photos has not been immediately confirmed, with some questioning whether the Guzman family would put his freedom in jeopardy by providing more information about him. However one of his sons had apparently hinted on Twitter that his father would escape days before it happened.

Meanwhile Mexican investigators detained for questioning almost 50 prison officials, suspecting that some of

Guzman “had to have” had help from among the staff of the Altiplano prison, Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong told journalists at a briefing on Monday.

Chong said prison warden and two other officials have been fired over the failure to keep Guzman behind bars, but rejected the notion that he should leave his office as well.

Mexico’s Attorney General

Arely Gomez, who was also taking part in the media briefing, said authorities would offer 60 million pesos (US$3.82 million) for information leading to capture of the high-profile fugitive.

The crime boss escaped Altiplano through a 1.5km tunnel leading to a half-constructed building. It was made possible because his surveillance left two blind spots for privacy concerns, Chong revealed. Guzman got rid of a tracker bracelet he was forced to wear and smashed

bulbs lighting up the tunnel as he fled, the minister said.

The escape was the second for Guzman in 15 years. He was previously caught in 1993, but in 2001 fled, bribing prison guards.

He was arrested again in 2014.

The getaway is a humiliating blow to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, who is now visiting France. Interior Minister Chong had to cut his participation in the tour short and return to Mexico to head the manhunt after Guzman.

this time to experience the Giant’s Causeway.

The Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s iconic World Heritage Site, is a fascinating geological phenomenon. It is estimated to have formed about 60 million years ago as a result of volcanic eruptions, followed by lava cooling to form a hard rock called basalt. 40,000 interlocking columns were created, some of which appear to have certain shapes such as a giant boot, a harp, or a camel. Locals believe there is magic in these rocks and that if you stand on them, you

will definitely feel something. Try it and see if you feel a tingle in your feet.

The Giant’s Causeway is also steeped in legend linked to Irish giant Finn MacCool, who it is said wanted to do battle with Benandonner, a rival giant in Scotland. The story tells of Finn building huge stepping stones across the sea so that the Scottish giant could cross to Ireland and do battle with him.

However, when Finn saw the enormous size of the giant, he ran home to his wife and asked her to disguise him as her baby.

When Benandonner saw this huge “baby,” he feared that the father would be too big to defeat and went on his merry way back to Scotland. So, using deception, Finn MacCool emerged victorious, and the legend lives on to this day.

After this awesome experience, we were off to take a quick look at the remains of Dunluce Castle, some of which are thought to date back to the 1200s AD. Perched on a steep cliff overlooking the sea, this medieval castle is on the Antrim coast, quite close to the Giant’s Causeway and like almost all of the castles, saw its share of battles. We wandered through the ruins; our imaginations painting pictures of what might have been the castle’s former splendor.

ancient sites. The “dessert” was a scrumptious dinner at Deanes Meat Locker Brassierie, where we enjoyed delicious, exquisitely prepared food and excellent wine.

Incidentally, contrary to popular belief, corned beef and cabbage is not the national Irish dish and is only eaten occasionally, with very few Irish people eating it on St. Patrick’s Day. So, the polite thing to do is to order something off the menu and have corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day in America.

FILM ‘Ted 2’ & DVDs From PBS

Seth MacFarlane’s humor is not for everyone. It can be crude, politically incorrect and vulgar. In “Ted 2,” about a raunchy Teddy bear named Ted (voiced by MacFarlane), it is all the above in combination with some warm.

Tender moments and a razzledazzle Busby Berkeley inspired dance sequence performed at Ted‘s elaborate wedding to a reallive girl. Eventually, Ted’s marriage starts to come apart at the seams. At this point, the very odd couple decides to adopt a baby, since anatomically speaking, Ted can’t be a dad because—well.

You fill in the blanks.

The couple’s first choice for a sperm donor is Ted’s best friend John (Mark Wahlberg), but his clumsy attempt ends in a messy disaster at the sperm bank. The next step is a nighttime raid on the mansion of football stars Tom Brady (in a cameo appearance) that also ends unsuccessfully, but provides lots of laughs, particularly for the men and teenaged boys in the audience.

There are quite a few star sightings throughout, including a funny bit by Liam Neeson, who portrays a cautious cereal buyer in the convenience store where Ted used to work before he was fired. As a Teddy bear, Ted is now legally considered property after a court battle goes awry. Now Ted can no longer earn a salary or be legally married. To reclaim Ted’s identity and personal rights John and Ted seek help from a young lawyer (Amanda Seyfried).

This will be her very first case.

Morgan Freeman, as the nation’s leading civil rights lawyer, is also consulted, but will this towering voice of authority join in their fight for equal rights for a Teddy bear?

If you are easily offended,

stay away, but if you are open to an often funny comedy that is a guilty pleasure for movie snobs, you may find this raunchy comedy unbearably comical at times. Pardon the pun. From Universal Pictures, rated R for language, sexual references

Check out PBS for fine DVDs. Two of their newest releases deal about the nature of crows and the importance of royal clothing. Both are available on-line at PBS.org or in stores like Target and Barnes and Noble.

If someone asked you to name the smartest animals in the world would you think of adding crows to the list? If that never occurred to you, think again because crows are right up there with such bright beasts as elephants and chimpanzees.

The fine PBS show “A Murder of Crows” sheds brand new light on these amazing birds with an attitude. Fresh research presented in this fascinating “Nature” segment, now available on DVD or Blu-ray, shows us that like elephants and chimpanzees, crows are able to use tools. They can recognize each other’s voices and 250 distinct calls and are very social. Crows mate for life (hey, that’s better than lots of humans), and they raise their young for up to five years. Crows can also recognize individual humans and pick them out in a crowd up to two years later. So, if you thought, crows were a nuisance or spooky, as presented by Alfred Hitchcock or Edgar Allen Poe, think again.

Princess Diana was constantly photographed in her gorgeous gowns and now Prince William’s lovely wife; Kate is in the media spotlight.

Even so, this interest is not new; it has always been this way.
