The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics was held on Sat. July 18th. By Pat Krause The Olympic Torch made its way to the Palm Springs Convention Center where Law enforcement runners and dignitaries came in from the rain. James Canfield spoke to all the guests and friends who braved the rain to be able to witness this historic event. He said Palm Springs was so proud to be able to host this segment
of the Special Olympics. Over 30 runners participated in the final leg team that saw the Olympian flame come from The State Capitol and will finally land at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the Special Olympian World Games. The final leg ceremony at the Convention Center had speakers plus Palm Springs Councilman and mayor pro-tem

idea, with studies showing earlier mortality rates and more health problems among those who retire than those who keep working. Even though today’s new retirees tend to be significantly healthier and more active than their parents were, trading an interesting and intellectually stimulating or creative job for a life of TV, cards and golf may not be best for everyone. Those who have not saved enough for retirement may decide that part of their plan is to just work and save longer. Another consideration should be to commit to spending less and reducing debt much earlier in life, so one can better handle “surprises” in their twilight years, such as the death of their spouse, disability and dependent family members. Many, who must continue working, fear that they may not be able to work due to health reasons or may not be able find work. They also need to plan for potentially increasing out-of-pocket medical costs. If someone ultimately cannot work, they could also consider selling their family home and moving to a condo or renting an apartment – and perhaps even sharing expenses with a roommate. A 50-year-old, 5,000 square-foot home with extensive maintenance, utility and real estate tax expenses can prove to be a heavy burden for a retiree on a fixed income.

benefits every year based upon a retiree’s 35 highest-earning years. If after 70, you are still earning near your highest level, each of those post-retirement years of earnings will replace earlier low-earning years. The increase in benefits paid out can still be significant -- about a 9-10% boost in benefits for working past 70 until 75 and 17-20% for working until 80, assuming pay remains level. For those who continue to earn income, benefits earned are worth even more, dollar for dollar, than money drawn from a 401(k) or IRA, because only 85% of the Social Security benefit is taxable. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: What is exclusive common area? I’m in a townhome community. Are fences between connected townhomes exclusive common area that the HOA has responsibility for? Thank You, J.S., Westminster Dear J.S.: Assuming the condominium units are air space blocks (check the Condominium Plan to confirm), the fences, being outside the units, would likely be common area. If your HOA governing documents (CC&Rs, bylaws, rules) do not address the fences, they are most likely HOA responsibility. Your HOA counsel should be able to answer this quickly. Thanks, Kelly
Dear A.Z.: Most association governing documents give the association a right of access to exclusive use common areas for the purpose of making repairs. If an area can be accessed without entering a unit, the documents might not require advance notification. However, good neighbor relations would benefit from the courtesy of advance notice, even if not required. Thanks for your question, Kelly Hi Mr. Richardson, I manage a condo that has its own balcony. My tenants want to install a small TV dish on the balcony railing. The association board says that the only way they will allow a dish to be installed is on a tripod on the deck of the balcony. The tenants have a young son, and they are July 22, 2015
concerned that he may tip the tripod and dish over on himself. My question is does Assembly Bill 968 that revises Civil Code 4775 Section 1 and 2 grant more rights to occupants of exclusive use areas such as a balcony? Thanks for any help that you can give me. N.G., Carpinteria
Dear N.G.: AB 968 (from 2014) does not change homeowner rights regarding exclusive use common area. The bill, effective in 2017, confirms what most HOA lawyers have been saying for years – that unless the governing documents say otherwise, the HOA repairs and replaces exclusive use areas. Until 2017, Civil Code Section 4775 appears to have a gap, since it does not specifically allocate repair and replacement responsibility for exclusive use areas. The change in the language makes explicit what had previously been implicit, so it will not change anything in 2017. If an association’s governing documents cover the topic of repair, the law does not apply. If the governing documents do not address the topic, there should be no change, since HOAs already were responsible – the amendment simply spells it out
more clearly. If your association wishes to allocate repair and replacement responsibility differently than the Civil Code, the association members can vote to approve amendments to the CC&Rs. Satellite dishes are governed by the Federal Communication Commission’s “Over The Air Receiving Devices” (aka “OTARD”) Rule. Under this Rule, homeowners have certain protections for use of dish antenna. However, associations are not required to allow attachment to common area, and balcony railings in an airspace condominium unit are likely common area (see the Condominium Plan or check with the HOA’s attorney to make sure). For more information on the OTARD Rule, visit https:// www.fcc.gov/guides. Thanks, Kelly

Man arrested for ‘treating’ cancer patient with dirt
By Desert Star Staff A California man is out on bail after being accused of posing as a doctor and illegally practicing medicine. He allegedly gave a desperate cancer patient expired medication and a “baggie of dirt for treatment, authorities say. Investigators in Ventura County, California said Vincent Gammill, 69, was arrested in early July under suspicion of practicing medicine without a license and providing “cancer treatment that involved expired medications, powders, liquids and instructions on how to mix a compound. One prescription even included a “baggie of dirt. Authorities said they found 25,000 prescription pills at the treatment center at his home,
including morphine, Ambien, steroids and other drugs of Mexican and Russian origin. The investigation started after a patient went to police with her concerns. The case revolves around a California woman with late-stage cancer who gave Gammill $2,000 for 16 hours of consultation and treatment, according to investigators. She had followed Gammill’s work online since 2008, when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. After the cancer spread to her brain, lungs and bones, she was more willing to try his treatments, the woman, who has only been identified as Fern, told ABC. “[Cancer patients are] very vulnerable because there isn’t
a cure and when you’re getting further down the line you get desperate, Fern said. Fern was given a mysterious powder and oil that was mixed in a capsule. As part of her instructions, she was told one of the chemical compounds could burn a hole through a table and was shown how to mix the compound over a frying pan, investigators said. “She began to get a burning sensation in her stomach and Gammill told the victim it was good her stomach was burning because that meant the ingredients were still active, the police said in their report. “When she got back and started thinking about what he had given her and what he
had said ... she realized she was scammed out of $2,000, Detective Robert Davidson of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said. That was when she called police. Because the woman’s illness could have limited her ability to protect her rights, Detective Davidson said Gammill is also accused of suspicion of dependent adult abuse. Gammill reportedly first told police that he had some kind of degree in science. He later admitted that he had no qualifications beyond a high school diploma. On the Natural Oncology Institute website, where Gammill is listed as director, it also says he is a pharmaceutical designer
and consultant. The institute says it provides information to clients about research and clinical experience regarding what works and what doesn’t for cancer patients. “I’m totally innocent of everything, Gammill told the Ventura County Star. He said he’s not a doctor and doesn’t act like one. “If anyone is a victim, it’s me. I don’t treat people for cancer, he said. “I help let them know what their options are. Gammill is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on August 31. Investigators from Ventura and Contra Costa counties said they’re seeking other possible victims.

‘Hands off my dishwasher Obama!’
By Desert Star Staff Energy-efficiency standards for dishwashers proposed by the US Department of Energy would turn “back the clock to the days of hand-washing dishes,” industry claims, as the new rules aim to save $2 billion for consumers over 30 years. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) has spoken out against the Department of Energy’s proposal for energy and water cuts associated with residential dishwashing machines. The department’s proposal was announced in December. It called for savings of 240 billion gallons of water over the next 30 years while reducing energy use by 12 percent. The goals include significant reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and mercury involved in the energy sector. AHAM says the plan will “undermine the energy and water savings” since dishwasher users may have to repeat a machine-washing cycle or hand-wash dishes. The home appliance lobby said it conducted its own tests using the Energy Department’s regulatory proposal, finding that
dishwashers would be reduced to 3.1 gallons per wash cycle. This 24-percent cut in energy and 38-percent cut in water “will trigger enormous consumer dissatisfaction,” the group claimed. “Home appliance manufacturers recently completed several rounds of testing to the proposed standards,” AHAM wrote. “The testing revealed a build-up of film, fats and grease on dishes at the end of the cycle. As a result of the proposed standards, it is highly likely that consumers will pre-wash dishes or choose to repeat dishwasher cycles, thereby erasing any energy or water savings.” The proposed standards could mean that more than 70 percent of dishwasher owners “could actually experience a net financial loss when purchasing a product that meets the proposed levels,” according to AHAM’s analysis. “At some point, they’re trying to squeeze blood from a stone that just doesn’t have any blood left in it,” Rob McAver, AHAM’s top lobbyist, told The Hill. The Department of Energy has said that just the cut to carbon emissions in the proposal
could mean billions in savings for the public. The department did predict that the plan would cut the residential dishwasher industry by about one-third, and that plan would ultimately hit industry with $200 million in compliance costs. The department said that it
is still crafting its final rules on dishwashers, taking into account manufacturer concerns. “The department has not put a fork in this rule, and has extended the comment period to work closely with manufacturers to test new products and ensure that consumers have the most
efficient, highest performing products available,” an agency spokeswoman said, according to The Hill. AHAM includes major appliance makers, including GE Appliances and Lighting and Whirlpool Corp.
Weekend Rain Delivered To Desperate Golf Courses
By Julie Buehler, Video Journalist INDIAN WELLS, Ca. -The weekend weather impacted Coachella Valley golf courses in very different ways depending on which side of the valley the course resides. At The Golf Club at La Quinta, the course was closed as of Saturday afternoon in order to keep patrons safe from severe thunder and lightening.
Then the rain came, pouring more than half an inch in 30 minutes. The club was forced to close the driving range through the weekend and as of Monday afternoon, it remained closed. On the north side of town, other golf courses, such as Desert Dunes Golf Club in Desert Hot Springs and Taquitz Creek Golf Club in Palm Springs offered appreciation for the rain
and the beautification of the courses. Desert Dunes Operation Manager, Jose Rivera, said any rain in July is a welcomed sight. “It’s just like natural fertilizer, that’s what I call it. Especially rain this short. It was great.” Jay Glover, a manager at Taquitz Creek, echoed those sentiments and added that even though his Palm Spring
College Students Band Together to Save The Colorado River
By Desert Star Staff Instead of partying away the summer with friends, dozens of college kids from California, Arizona, Colorado and Nevada are celebrating Latino Conservation week by preparing for a leadership summit next week in Denver. They’re all part of a nonprofit called Nuestro Rio, which means “our river” in Spanish. The event will train new leaders in the fight to save the Colorado River from mismanagement and overuse. “The Colorado River provides so many different things for civilization,” said Adrian Hernandez Lopez, a member of www.desertstarweekly.com
Nuestro Rio and a student of environmental engineering at Santa Ana College. “Wherever you look in the West, the Colorado River is somehow involved one way or another.” Hoover Dam on the Colorado River provides power to much of Southern California. It brings water to 6 million acres of farmland and generates $1.4 trillion a year for the economy. The students are promoting a “conservation first” agenda to make sure that every drop counts. Greg Webb, director of Nuestro Rio’s youth program, said young Latinos and Native
Americans are continuing their cultural heritage by protecting the natural world. “These young people are answering the call to serve,” he said. “It’s a thread that runs richly through Native American tradition, and it’s a thread that runs deeply in the Latino and Hispanic tradition as well.” Last year, the students created the first-ever Lower Colorado Region Youth Council at the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation.
Senior Softball team had to take the night off Saturday due to lightening, the rain helped because it had been so dry for so long, the terrain was able to absorb all the rain quickly. Head pros at the courses at PGA West in La Quinta, Desert Willow in Palm Desert and more reported no damage, just greener turf. So despite the fact, the weather delayed The
Open Championship for PGA Tour players and caused the first postponed game at Angels Stadium since 1995, it was not difficult for local golf course managers to find the silver lining in the weekend storm clouds. Source KMIR

Going From Water Waster to Water Wise Can be Easy
By Kitty Alvarado COACHELLA VALLEY Many in the Coachella Valley are starting to feel the weight of the water mandates because they’re receiving fines from their water districts. Because 80 percent of water usage in the valley is used outdoors, your yard is a good place to look to cut back. But going from inefficient to excellent on your next bill doesn’t take a lot of money, and you can do it yourself without sacrificing beautiful landscaping. Phil Sklar, the vice president of Mirage Cove’s homeowners association says their community started converting non-essential green areas three years ago. He says they’ve removed 50 thousand square feet of turf on the 20-acre property. He says the goal was to keep the lush and beautiful surroundings. Using native plants, rocks and grass
an accent helped accomplish the elegant look. He says they received a lot of help from the Coachella Valley Water District’s website and their incentives like the turf buy back program. Sklar says a good tip to reducing water is to create a border around your lawn because if the lawn grows right up to the curb, the water will spill over and create a river of water waste down your street. He says he’s proud of his community because with the changes, they have cut back 50 percent on their water bill. David Meeks and Roger LaFeber are another good example of a beautiful and efficient yard. Their landscaping is so attractive they won an award from the water districts. They say the key to converting to desert scape is to have a plan and take your time. They say

California shows it’s serious about enforcing water cuts
By Fenit Nirappil And Ellen Knickmeyer SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California drought regulators sent the strongest signal yet that they’re serious about cracking down on water waste by proposing a first-of-its kind, $1.5 million fine against a group of farmers they say illegally took water. The fine announced Monday by the State Water Resources Control Board is the first ever levied against an individual or district with senior rights that are more than a century old and have long provided immunity from mandatory conservation. The fine follows months of unprecedented cutback orders to communities, businesses and the powerful agriculture industry during the fourth year of the devastating dry spell in
California. The state is fighting off court challenges to its authority to control water use and doubts over whether it has the resources to enforce its orders. The water board levied the historic fine against the ByronBethany Irrigation District, which serves 160 farming families and a suburban planned community of 12,000 people in the Central Valley. Andrew Tauriainen, a water board prosecutor, said the district was outspoken over continuing to illegally take water, and the fine should show others such brazenness will draw the attention of investigators. Byron-Bethany Board President Russell Kagehiro said the state was making an arbitrary example of his district at the expense of its customers
and farmers, which stand to lose $65 million in crops under the cuts demanded by the state. The district has previously filed a lawsuit seeking to preserve its water access. “Farmers have to sort of weigh the cost of losing that crop, I guess, against potential fines,” said Jeffrey Michael, an economist at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. The equation is particularly challenging for those who contend the state has no authority to order them to conserve because their rights predate the modern water permitting system in 1914. Courts have yet to rule on the matter. These senior water rights holders have strong incentives to fight any state-ordered curtailments because they will
likely see similar cuts in future dry years if they yield in this drought, Michael said. Water board officials say they plan to issue more penalties and orders later this summer to stop taking water. The board has sent out more than 9,000 notices across the parched Central Valley warning of short water supplies. Some continue to draw anyway, including the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. The agency intends to divert water for the city-operated Camp Mather near Yosemite National Park until it receives a cease-and-desist order, spokesman Tyrone Jue said. The water board would not confirm if San Francisco was under investigation as a result. State inspectors have conducted about 1,200 investigations in the past year but only took action on two, including Byron-Bethany. Officials say some cases from last year are still dragging because the state doesn’t have enough people to handle all the work. “ O u r re s o u rc e s a re somewhat limited here, and we are taking our cases as we can
get them and as we can develop them,” Tauriainen, the water board lawyer. In the case of ByronBethany, the water board says state data shows illegal diversions of water from a pumping plant in June after the district received a warning that the watershed was too dry to meet demand. District general manager Rick Gilmore said he did not know a penalty was coming and wasn’t aware of the details. The water that the state believes was taken might have been supplemental supplies purchased by the district, he said. Tauriainen said there was no indication the district had been taking such supplemental water from other sources before the alleged diversions began. Byron-Bethany has 20 days to request a hearing before the water board to contest the fine, although it’s unclear how long it could take to resolve the case. The maximum penalty the fivemember board could assess is $5 million, depending on how the water was used. Knickmeyer reported from San Francisco. Source KMIR

Cuban flag flies in Washington as embassy reopens after 54 years
By Desert Star Staff Relations between Cuba and the US took another step forward Monday as the Cuban embassy reopened in Washington and the US embassy began operations in Havana. The agreement restoring diplomatic relations came into effect at midnight last night. Maintenance crews at the US Department of State put up the Cuban flag in the main lobby around 4am local time Monday. With the flags arranged alphabetically, Cuba assumed its rightful place between Croatia and Cyprus. It was the first time the island nation’s banner has been displayed in the building; according to the State Department’s protocol office, the lobby was dedicated on January 5, 1961 – two days after the US broke diplomatic relations with Cuba. Media assembled in front of the Cuban embassy on 16th Street in Washington, DC, for the grand opening ceremony-taking place at 10:30am local time. The mansion had been operating as an interest’s section, under the auspices of the Swiss embassy, since 1977. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, leading the Cuban delegation to the US. Speaking at the reception following the flag raising,

Rodriguez credited the “firm and wise leadership of Fidel Castro” and said the flag hoisted today was the same one that was taken down in 1961. It was kept safe in Florida in anticipation of this day, he said. “As we fly again the flag that embodies the struggle of our people for national independence against the greatest challenges and dangers, we pay tribute to those who fell in defense of our nation, with absolute confidence in those who will continue to serve it with honor,” Rodriguez said. The Cuban minister also relayed a message of goodwill from President Raul Castro, who endorsed the decision to rebuild diplomatic relations based on mutual respect. “Only the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade, which has caused so much harm and suffering to our people, the return of the occupied territory Guantanamo and the respect for Cuba’s sovereignty, will lend some meaning to the event you are witnessing today,” Rodriguez said, adding that “the challenge is great because there have never been normal relations between our people.” Later in the day, Rodriguez met with Secretary of State John Kerry at the State Department,
the first such visit since 1958. The meeting ran long and delayed the scheduled press conference by almost an hour. “Today we begin to repair what was damaged and to open what has been close for many years,” Kerry told reporters, calling the embassy reopening “a historic and long overdue step in the right direction.” Though differences between the US and Cuban governments remain, the policy change reflects the reality “that the cold war ended long ago, and that interests of both countries are better served by engagement than by estrangement,” Kerry explained. While praising the current step in rebuilding relations between the US and Cuba, Rodriguez noted that full normalization will come only when the US lifts the blockade, hands over the “illegally occupied” territory of Guantanamo Bay, and compensate Cuba for “human and economic damages” inflicted by the decades-long siege of the island nation. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson and current chief of the US Interests Section in Havana Jeffrey DeLaurentis represented the US at the embassy ceremony. The US flag will be raised July 22, 2015
at the embassy in Havana on August 14, when Secretary Kerry heads to Cuba for an official visit. Announcing the reopening of embassies earlier this month, President Barack Obama said the US needed to support its values through engagement, not blockade. “We don’t have to be imprisoned by the past. If something isn’t working, we can and will change,” Obama said. Speaking to reporters at the State Department Monday, the visiting Cuban minister called the relations with Washington “asymmetric,” and noted that Cuba was not blockading
anyone, barring anyone’s citizens from visiting, or occupying anyone’s territory. Still, he was optimistic about the prospect of real change in relations with the US. “We strongly believe we can both cooperate and coexist in a civilized way,” Rodriguez said. As for questions about political changes in Cuba as a result of the normalization, he brushed them off by saying that “political opening in Cuba happened in 1959,” the year Castro’s revolutionary forces overthrew the US-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. www.desertstarweekly.com
Report suggest US children left behind in economic recovery McCarthy said that particularly troubling is an increase in the share of kids living in poor communities, regardless of their own families’ economic standing. The report says 1 in 7 children live in those areas, marked by poor schools and a lack of a safe place to play. “They’re more likely to fall down the economic ladder, less likely to be employed and more likely to get in trouble,” McCarthy said.

(AP) - A new report on child welfare that found more U.S. children living in poverty than before the Great Recession belies the fanfare of the nation’s economic turnaround. Twenty-two percent of American children were living in poverty in 2013 compared with 18 percent in 2008, according to the latest Kids Count Data Book, with poverty rates nearly double among African-Americans and American Indians and problems
most severe in South and Southwest. The report, released Tuesday from the child advocacy group the Annie E. But the bright spots weren’t enough to offset a picture that many children have been left behind amid the nation’s economic recovery. Here are some things to

r H e o m m m e & Garde u S ATTEND A GARDEN FESTIVAL
In between some shade trees with the breeze gently pushing you through rows upon rows of fresh vegetables, locally made crafts and one-ofa-kind food items. Is there a better way to spend a summer day? Every year, millions of people take to the centers of their respective communities to celebrate all things garden. And considering the emerging popularity of movements focused on eating clean and consuming more organic products, local growers are finding their services in high demand. Summer garden festivals provide enjoyable experiences for people of all ages, tastes and preferences for items such as flowers, bushes or trees. No matter what you’re looking for at a summer garden festival, you’re sure to find it.
GET INSPIRED One of the best aspects of attending a summer garden festival is the accessibility of local experts. This is your chance to ask your lawn and garden questions to a true specialist in the field. You will likely find professionals from local nurseries, garden centers and outdoor construction firms. Use this opportunity to pick their brains on projects you have in mind for your home, such as a new garden fence or outdoor kitchen area.
GET PRODUCTS Don’t let the word “garden” fool you into thinking you’ll only be able to find flowers or plants at your summer festival. Quite the opposite. Vendors will be ready to sell all types of food, drinks, gardening tools, lawn
accessories and decorative outdoor pieces, as well. Many downtowns host sidewalk sales during their summer festivals. Here you can find local businesses selling their unique jewelry and housewares, all during a convenient stroll down your city streets.
GET GOING What are you waiting for? Touch base with your local tourism organization and check the upcoming events section of your local newspaper to find your town’s next summer garden festival. Don’t forget to bring a cart or wagon for all of goodies you’ll find. A pickup truck will make it easy to haul the annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs and spices.
WASP-BE-GONE Wasps can absolutely terrorize a homeowner and family members if not kept at bay. They quickly build nests in sometimes hard-toreach places as to keep their base hidden from any human danger. Their ability to fly makes it harder to catch them, but fortunately you are smarter than a wasp. Your ability to spot a wasp nest from a distance gives you a distinct advantage in the fight for your yard, but you must make sure to approach or treat one carefully. If you are allergic to wasp stings, it is not worth the risk to treat a nest yourself. Call in your local exterminator to handle the project for you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers
up these tips to protect yourself from wasp stings: • Wear light-colored, smooth-finished clothing • Avoid perfumed soaps, shampoos, and deodorants • Do not wear cologne or perfume • Wear clean clothing and bathe daily • Wear clothing to cover as much of the body as possible; • Avoid flowering plants when possible • Keep work areas clean; • Remain calm and still if a single stinging insect is flying around • If attacked by several stinging insects, run to get away • Go indoors. RIDING MOWER MAINTENANCE How much time do you devote to mowing your lawn every week? One of the best ways to cut down on your cutting time is to make sure your riding mower is up to par. Regular maintenance such as oil changes, tire pressure checks and spark plug replacements can both extend the life of your mower and help you get more quality performance out of your machine. Your mower may have come equipped with an hour meter to help you track and perform routine services. I f n o t , c re a t e a spreadsheet on your computer detailing the date you performed the service and any steps you had to take that may have been out of the ordinary. DECK MAINTENANCE One small issue with your deck’s alignment can
mean uneven and unsightly lines across your yard. Always check to see if your deck is level and property affixed to the mower. Follow the owner’s manual to remove and sharpen your blades, as well as to inspect drive belts or clean the underside of your deck. All of these actions will leave your mower in outstanding shape, no matter what part of mowing season it is. GAS & OIL Using high-quality gas and oil in your mower is critical to its performance. When changing the oil, always remember to: • Change it when the engine is warm • Use the easy-to-open push-pull drain plug and plastic hose, if your mower came equipped with one; you maybe able to change
your push mower’s oil by dumping it on its side — obviously not so for your riding mower

MUSIC July offers an eclectic celebration of rock BY ROBERT KINSLER
From the ’50s rock ‘n’ roll-minded cult classic flick “Daddy-O” featured on “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and a stunning look back at The Rolling Stones to the final release from power-pop champions The Knack and an ambitious look at the Continental Drifters, July has racked up an eclectic wealth of sonic riches.

on July 5, 1969 (and only two days after the death of former Stones guitarist Brian Jones), the concert also marked the Rolling Stones’ first full-length concert appearance in two years. “From the Vault – Hyde Park Live 1969” is more than a concert, offering up the full 8-song set along with fascinating crowd footage (look closely and you can catch Paul McCartney), interviews with a young Mick Jagger and the debut of young lead guitar great Mick Taylor. A fascinating and essential moment in the Rolling Stones’ impressive career. Information: eagle-rock.com. DVD Title: Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXIII (Shout! Look no further than the first of
four must-see films skewered on the newly-released “Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXIII” collection. On “Daddy-O,” aspiring rock singer Phil “Daddy-O” Sandifer (played by singer-actor Dick Contino) somehow is able to pick up on girls, get pulled into a drug-running scheme and lose his best friend thanks to a solid story that somehow never flies on film. The most noteworthy aspect of the movie itself is that it provided young composer John Williams with his first-ever feature film score, while Joel and his two bots are able to entertain via their sharp-witted zingers and commentary. The other three films that get a well-deserved Satellite of Love treatment include “Earth Vs. The Spider,” “Teen-Age Crime Wave” and “Agent for H.A.R.M.” Information: shout factory.com.

While the 17-song set includes the Los Angeles-based quartet’s biggest hits (“That’s What the Little Girls Do,” “Good Girls Don’t” “My Sharona”), the high-octane performance also shines via career-spanning material including the melodic “Can I Borrow a Kiss,” driving “Pop Is Dead” and the set-ending rollicking medley of “Tequila”/”Break On Through.” Sadly, “Live From the Rock ‘n’ Roll Fun House” would mark The Knack’s final release; lead singerrhythm guitarist Doug Fieger died after a long battle with cancer on Feb. 14, 2010. Continental Drifters compilation “Drifted: In The Beginning & Beyond” is astounding, with the Americana-styled collective’s early course captured perfectly via a number of sweet demos, alternate tracks, live recordings and more. Featuring a number of talented members over the decade-long history of the group, the far-flung material ranges from the rousing folk rock-tinged “Who We Are, Where We Live” (featuring Vicki Peterson’s strong soprano) and Southern rocker “Side Steppin’ the Fire” to a freewheeling take on Gram Parsons’ “A Song For You” (featuring Peter Holsapple and Susan Cowsill providing lead and harmony vocals) and harmony-filled enthralling take on Neil Young’s wonderful “When You Dance I Can Really Love.” The one bond that magically binds all the material across the 33-track collection is the strength of song craft and gifted touch used by the musicians to bring these songs to life. Scaled-Down Immigrant Healthcare Bill Passes
By Desert Star Staff Undocumented immigrants who had hoped to get Medi-Cal coverage this year will have to wait, but they may be able to buy into plans on the Covered California exchange. The scaled-back version of Senate Bill 4 passed the state Assembly Committee on Health on Tuesday. According to attorney Amparo Cid with the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation, the new version of the bill simply directs the state to ask the feds for permission to let undocumented immigrants buy coverage through the state exchange with their own money – meaning no subsidies. - which currently is s forbidden under the Affordable Care Act. “For certain families, being able to utilize the marketplace to purchase health insurance might be beneficial,” Cid said. “It’s probably still
unaffordable, but it’s a step.” The original version of the socalled “Health for All” bill, which passed the state Senate last month, would have opened up Medi-Cal to adult undocumented immigrants. But that part of the bill was dropped because of cost concerns. It’s expected to be reintroduced in 2016. The state budget, passed last month, did include $40 million to extend Medi-Cal coverage to all income-eligible children, regardless of immigration status – a move Cid said her group applauds. “It’s absolutely historic,” she said. “It’s absolutely a community victory that, in California, we are saying that individuals matter.” This is the last week for bills to be heard before the end of the Medical care for undocumented immigrants passed the California Assembly Committee on Health on Tuesday, although the summer session. Several other bill was scaled back significantly from what originally was passed by the state Senate. T R AV E L Northern Ireland – The Land of Castles, Legends & Myths BY BEVERLY COHN
PART TWO:
In Part 1, which covered Days 1 and 2 of this amazing journey through Northern Ireland, we explored Carrickfergus Castle; had a fabulous meal at the beautiful French Rooms at Bushmills; visited Glenarm Castle, and had a fun tour with Andrew Morrow, the head gardener, whose father was the resident chauffeur for 50 years. We explored the ancient Giant’s Causeway with its scientific, as well as mythological, explanations of its formation; wandered through the ruins of Dunluce Castle, ending Day 2 with a gourmet dinner at Deanes Meat Locker. Could Days 3 and 4 get any better? Read on and you’ll see. DAY 3: The next historic castle on our tour was Hillsborough Castle, located in County Down. Nestled on 96 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, this Georgian mansion was originally built in the 1770s and was renovated in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The castle boasts several elegantly appointed State Rooms, available for receptions and dinners – with a seating capacity ranging from 50 to 400. Queens, princes, princesses, and heads of government have walked these luscious grounds. One special area is the Granville Garden, the site of the largest rhododendron collection in
Europe. It was created by Queen Elizabeth II’s aunt, who was married to the Earl of Granville. Hillsborough Castle also has the distinction of being designated the official Northern Ireland residence of the Royal Family, as well as the Secretary of State of Northern Ireland, who is appointed by the British monarch and reports to the Parliament of the United Kingdom. There is an elegantly appointed Throne Room with an imposing throne. However, the Queen prefers to sit in a chair directly in front of the throne to receive guests. A guest book is placed on a nearby table and we all took the opportunity to leave a note for the Queen. Still on a high from our visit to this historic castle, we piled back into the van and headed for Castle Ward, a National Trust* property. This is the castle in which the opening series of “Game of Thrones” was filmed. We actually stood in the courtyard where the young prince was tossed out of the window by that nasty queen in one of the earliest episodes. In looking at this18th century house, situated on 820 acres, overlooking the iconic Strangford Lough, it is evident that there are two distinctly different the styles of architecture. As the legend goes, it seems that the Ward men married women of great wealth. One such couple could not agree on the style; she wanted Gothic, he wanted Classical. Hence, they compromised and the home was constructed and furnished to accommodate their specific preferences. A word about Strangford Lough: With its over 120 islands rich in wildfowl and marine life, it is considered Europe’s most significant wildlife sanctuaries. As was mentioned in Part 1, gardening is in the DNA of the Irish people as evidenced once again by Castle Ward’s sprawling magnificent gardens. One

Its beauty and tranquility is something to behold. One ancestor of note is the extraordinary Mary Ward, who lived in the 19th century. She was a naturalist, astronomer, scientific pioneer, artist, and mother of eight children. Encouraged by her parents, she was the first woman to use the giant telescope owned by her cousin, the Earl of Rosse, at Birr Castle.** As a teenager, she possessed an advanced microscope, which she used with slides she made herself from slivers of ivory, as glass was difficult to access. A very accomplished woman, she earned respect from other scientists. Her book, “The World of Wonders,” contains drawings of microscopic organisms as uncovered through the microscope. It became a coveted reference book, as did her multiple articles. Sadly, in what is thought to be the world’s first traffic accident, while visiting her cousin, Mary fell out of a steam engine car and was

crushed by the wheels. Under the terms of National Trust ownership, Castle Ward is a hotbed of events open to the public including: Mother’s Day; St. Patrick’s Day; Spring Guided Walk; Craft Demonstrations; Pet Nose Day; Historical Cream Tea; Dog Agility; Jazz in the Gardens; Summer Garden Fete; and Pirates Picnic. There is also Clear Sky Kids Summer Activity Camp, and the Full Moon Twilight Boat Trip. By the way, in case you ever wondered about the origin of the phrase “upper crust,” our guide explained that when bread was toasted, servants scraped off the bottom burnt part, with the unburned portion reserved for the royals. So from now on when you hear the phrase “upper crust,” think bread. No trip to Northern Ireland would be complete without a visit to the very imposing Titanic Exhibit, which houses the world’s largest collection of everything Titanic. It is located in the exact slipway where she was built in Belfast at the Harland & Wolf Shipyard from 1909-1922. The company employed over 3,000 men to build the ship, which was hailed as “the new wonder of the world.” With a crowd of 100,000 people watching, this mighty, but doomed vessel set sail on April 10, 1912 from the Thompson Graving Dock – the largest in the world. The launch took only 62 seconds. The Titanic Exhibit is an emotional retelling of the most profound sea disaster in history. Its story is told through the Exhibit’s nine galleries, which contain photos, talking heads of people from that time, films, re-creations of the different staterooms, and interactive touch screens that take you to the bottom of the ocean. You can hear a voice say: “We are stopped and surrounded by ice.” The massive ship hit the iceberg at 11:40 pm on April 14, 1912.
Approximately 11 stories high, 882 feet, 8 inches in length, and weighing over 46,000 tons, Titanic disappeared into the freezing sea in 2 hours and 40 minutes. Each gallery will give you a visceral, emotional experience related to specific events. The nine galleries are: Boomtown Belfast; The Shipyard Ride; The Launch of Titanic; The Fit-Out; Maiden Voyage; The Sinking; The Aftermath; Myths & Realty; Visit & Explore the Wreck. The Titanic Exhibit is a moving experience; so do allow lots of time to explore each of the galleries. DAY 4: Fortified with a traditional Irish breakfast served in the restaurant of the Malmaison Hotel, we once more climbed into our comfortable van. Since we are creatures of habit, it’s no surprise that each journalist sat in the same seat every day. After the haunting Titanic experience, we were especially looking forward to being hosted for lunch by Lord and Lady Dunleath (Vibse) in their extraordinary Ballywalter Park home. We were warmly greeted by the royal couple and were immediately treated to a welcoming glass of champagne, after which they gave us a walking tour of their stately home. With twelve bedrooms and bathrooms, the castle also serves as a hotel and is used for conferences as well. The fees range from 280£ for a double room, to 150£ for a single, while a five-course dinner costs 140£. However, they are not set up for weddings at the moment. As in Hillsborough Castle, famous people have visited this beautifully restored mansion including: the British Royal Family, the Danish Crown Prince, and Jeremy Irons. The Dunleaths have one live-in housekeeper, and hire additional help as needed. The major source of their income, which Continues on Page 18 www.desertstarweekly.com

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Trump ruffles GOP feathers
By Desert Star Staff Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has repeated his comments that John McCain is “not a war hero.” Will the attack destroy his candidacy and the GOP’s chances at the White House? Or will it be a boost to Trump’s meteoric rise in popularity? On Saturday, the moderator of the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa described McCain, Arizona’s senior senator and a Vietnam veteran, as a “war hero.” Trump then responded: “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” Trump also called McCain a “loser” for not defeating thenSenator Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. “I supported McCain for president. He lost and let us down... I’ve never liked him as much after that,” he said. “I don’t like losers.” The mainstream media and the Republican establishment jumped on the comments, saying that they showed Trump is not a viable option to lead the country. GOP insiders told the Washington Post that Trump’s comments were “lethal,” a “complete cratering” of his support within the party and that he would become a “niche candidate.” Yet not all Republican strategists agreed with those assessments. “This guy has tapped into a very virulent strain of the anti-establishment wing of the Republican Party,” Phil Musser, an unaffiliated GOP strategist who finds Trump’s comments personally offensive, told the Post. “If he’s got a message that works for 15 percent of the people in the first five states, he’s a factor, and he’s a factor with delegates.” Dustin Siggins, writing for the conservative website Hot Air, noted that “by attacking McCain as he did, Trump also disparaged anyone who has been captured in combat or in other arenas of warfare.” Fellow Republican presidential candidate, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, agreed with Siggins’ sentiment, telling CNN’s ‘State of the Union’ that Trump’s comments made him unfit to serve as

head of the US military. “This is not just an insult to John McCain, who clearly is a war hero and a great man,” Rubio said. “It’s not just absurd. It’s offensive. It’s ridiculous. And I do think it is a disqualifier as commander-in-chief.” Other GOP candidates joined in the condemnation, including former Texas Governor Rick Perry, current Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. But one competitor’s voice has been noticeably absent: that of Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Both Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri and the Wall Street Journal called Cruz out for his silence. “The Texas Senator must be hoping to inherit Trump voters once the casino magnate flames out, but he’s revealing his own lack of political character,” the Wall Street Journal wrote. Even the White House weighed in on the controversy, stepping in to defend McCain. Press secretary Josh Earnest noted that Obama has always expressed his “admiration and deep respect” for McCain’s military service, even when they were battling for the presidency and expressing deep political differences. Yet “those debates have not reduced [Obama’s] appreciation for Senator McCain’s remarkable service to his country,” Earnest added. Trump doubled down on his comments on Sunday, writing an editorial for USA Today. The Op-Ed focused on what McCain has done as a senator, rather than on whether
he is a hero or not. “Thanks to McCain and his Senate colleague Bernie Sanders, their legislation to cover up the VA scandal, in which 1,000+ veterans died waiting for medical care, made sure no one has been punished, charged, jailed, fined or held responsible,” Trump wrote. “McCain has abandoned our veterans. I will fight for them.” “The reality is that John McCain the politician has made America less safe, sent our brave soldiers into wrong-headed foreign adventures, covered up for President Obama with the VA scandal and has spent most of his time in the Senate pushing amnesty,” Trump added. “He would rather protect the Iraqi border than Arizona’s.” However, USA Today’s editorial board, while accepting Trump’s piece, wrote one of their own in response, calling the billionaire businessman a “sideshow” with a “big mouth” who made a “lowclass outburst.” The paper also defended McCain’s heroic bonafides, noting that, during his five years as a prisoner-of-war, the then-naval aviator withstood torture and more than two years of solitary confinement, was injured when he was shot down and that he refused to be released early from the infamous Hanoi Hilton because it would have put him ahead of POWs who were captured before he was. In a phone interview on NBC’s ‘Today Show’ on Monday, Trump blasted the media for mischaracterizing his Saturday
comments, insisting that he had said “four times” in his Iowa remarks that he respected those captured in war. Yet McCain himself has refused to attack Trump for his comments. When asked on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ if Trump owes him an apology for his remarks, McCain responded: “No, I don’t think so. But I think he may owe an apology to the families of those who have sacrificed in conflict and those who have undergone the prison experience in serving their country.” “I think the point here is that there are so many men and women who served and sacrificed ‒ and happened to be held prisoner ‒ and to denigrate in any way that service, I think, is offensive to veterans,” he continued. McCain added that he doesn’t see himself as a hero, but those he was imprisoned with are. “When Mr. Trump says he prefers to be with people who are not captured, the great honor of my life was to be in the company of heroes,” he said. “I’m not a hero.” Whether in spite of or because of his repeated controversial statements, Trump has stolen the spotlight from more establishment Republican candidates. The real estate tycoon leads the crowded GOP presidential field with 57 percent of Republicans viewing him favorably, according to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, up from 49 percent in early July.

Prescription Painkillers Prime the Pump for Heroin more than doubling, for young adults. The reasons behind the rise are complicated, says CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden. But one thing is clear, there’s a connection to opioid prescription painkiller addiction. “The chemical is essentially the same,” says Frieden “So, when heroin is five times cheaper and much more widely available, it becomes something that’s driving this trend of rapid increase in heroin use.” It may be a case of unintended consequences, with Frieden explaining prescription painkillers became harder to obtain after limits were imposed because of addiction concerns. The CDC report says 45 percent of those who have used heroin had been dependent on prescription painkillers. Another finding, people without health coverage are more likely to use heroin. Heroin use and abuse in the U.S. is rising among most age groups and income levels, according to a new report from the Centers There’s also been an uptick for Disease Control and Prevention. He underscores the need to keep opioid painkillers as medical treatment options despite the heroin connection, with pros and cons weighed carefully. “If someone has excruciating pain from a surgical procedure, or a car crash, or a severe, terminal pain from cancer, you absolutely want to provide all palliation,” says Frieden. “For chronic noncancer pain, you really have to look at the risks and the benefits.” Recommendations for stemming the tide of heroin abuse include increased access to treatment, including medication-assisted treatments, recognition of the link between past prescription painkiller dependence and future heroin use and pain treatment plans for chronic sufferers that include options beyond medications. Northern Ireland – The Land of Castles, Legends & Myths Continued from Page 14 sustains the home, comes from their dairy farm, which houses 450 cows. As we were being shown around the castle, I had the opportunity to talk to Lady Dunleath who was “not to the manor born.” I asked her how they met. It seems that she was a food historian specializing in the evolution of food, specifically as it pertained to the history of bread, starting with medieval times. Lord Dunleah’s home was being used to film her television series so the Danish-born Vibse was at the castle over a long period of time. I asked her if it was love at first sight and she answered: “It was business at first sight.” Lord Dunleath was leaving on a trip
and asked her if she would look after the estate while he travelled. She answered, “Yes.” “The rest is history,” said Lady Dunleath with a smile. Both were married once before so the wonderful song by Frank Sinatra “The Second Time Around” seems quite appropriate. At the conclusion of our castle tour, where we saw lavishly furnished rooms filled with historic treasures and paintings going back generations, we entered the glorious dining room. For a brief moment, I felt that I could very easily become “Lady of Something.” The lunch was delicious, with the tomatoes fresh from the Ballywalter garden comprising the Dunleath Vitello Tomato with Walled Garden Salad. The lunch was crowned with a sinfully delicious chocolate fudge brownie and homemade coffee

ice cream. Life doesn’t get much better than this or, maybe it does. As much as we hated to tear ourselves away from this magical setting, it was time to move on to our next stop, which was Mount Stewart. Restored and also owned by the National Trust, this splendid property, family home of the Marquesses of Londonderry, is a dreamland of meandering paths leading to a mosaic of exquisite gardens originally planted by Edith, Lady Londonderry. Today these enchanting gardens rank as one of the Top 10 Gardens in the World. Neil Porteous, head gardener of this sprawling property, guided us through a few of the 18 distinctly unique gardens recreated from the diaries of Edith, Lady of Londonderry. Some of these iconic gardens include: Sunken Gardens; Lily Wood; Italian Garden; Peace Garden; Fountain Walk; Lake Walk; Walled Garden; Ladies Walk; Temple of the Woods; and Shamrock Garden. By the way, in case you’re wondering about the origin of the shamrock being an Irish symbol, it seems that St. Patrick actually created the name and it represents the Holy Trinity – The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost. Fun activities take place all year long at Mount Stewart, some of which include: a Rhododendron Ramble and Roast, Spring Guided Walk, Easter Egg Trail, Greyabbey Bay Walk, Pet Nose Day, and Jazz in the Gardens.
