Cannabis ‘Gold Pot’ US marijuana industry may reach $44 billion by 2020 including products associated with the growth of cannabis By Desert Star Staff The sale of cannabis could infuse up to $44 billion into the US economy by the end of the decade, according to the annual report from Marijuana Business Daily posted on Monday. If the current business and legalization trend continues,

annual revenue will increase from $14-17 billion this year to $24-$44 billion by 2020, says the report. The numbers include the sale of marijuana as well as products associated with the growth of cannabis. They include growers, grow-lights, marijuana accoutrements

and buying property for cultivation in states where the industry is legalized. Every dollar spent on marijuana at retail leads to an extra $3 working its way into the economy, according to the organization. “We’ve been expecting rapid growth in the marijuana

The Event honored two very well known philanthropists and deserving people. Harold Matzner was honored for his support of ACT for MS and so many other charities in the Desert. Matzner is an entrepreneur, Humanitarian and Philanthropist and is the owner of one of the finest restaurants in the Coachella Valley, Spencer’s. He has served on many boards, chaired many events, Donates his time and money abundantly. He chairs the Palm Springs International Film Festival and has made it what it is todaya world-renowned event. Gloria Greer passed away recently from cancer but was a driving force in all she did.

She founded ACT for MS after her daughter Norma was diagnosed with the Disease. She hosted many TV shows, had her own magazine, Sand to Sea, was the main diva for the social scene in Palm Springs Life magazine and has had a life long association with so many local charities. Her involvement in the social life and arts as a journalist is well known by all who knew her for over 25 years. Her smile is legendary and is sorely missed. Matzner gave a glowing tribute to her, as he was a dear friend until her death. The honor she was given was well deserved as she spent years raising money for this and other causes. Jim Fitz Fitzgerald served as Emcee honoring Matzner and Greer, The fun cocktail party had guests dressing up in the era of Sunday Night Fever.

Guests were given flashing light bulb necklaces and sunglasses to enhance their outfits. Photos were taken and distributed before guests left. Museum was turned into a magical land where women dressed as butterflies walked around thru the guests. Guests walked down the ramp to have their photos taken before heading down for the refreshments. The cocktail hour was outside in the patio area of the Museum. The guests were told to head to the Museum’s Annenberg Theatre to see

a fun filled cabaret style performance with singers and violinists. Gary Hall and Gary Schahet said that their co-chairs were Barbara and Gene Berlanti, Jerry Green and Phyllis Schahet and it took a lot of donors, underwriters and volunteers to put on this Extravaganza Style Gala. John Barrowman took to the stage singing some of his favorite songs. He said he loved the Desert so much he bought 3 homes here, one

for his parents that were in the audience. He does a lot of performing in the UK and is known here for Arrow and Torchwood shows. Barrowman brought Broadway star Sally Ann Triplett on stage for a duet before she sang a few songs solo. The other performers were, Wellstrung, which is made up of 3 violinists and a cello player that sing and play in a unique style. The audience loved each and every performance. The guests were ushered upstairs into the main lobby area for an elegant dinner. The table decorations and the cloth draped ceiling and walls were beautifully done. The food was prepared so grand that you almost didn’t want to destroy the beauty by eating it. This fairytale evening is one to remember. A special Celebrity guest for the night was the famous Minnie Driver. Dancing followed this spectacular dinner for a magical night in Wonderland. They announced they had raised over $750,000 to support all the Museum’s programs.

Other than lending guidelines, there may be other reasons to limit rentals, even though it will take a while for enough turnover in your membership for the limit to have any significant impact on rentals. Just under half of the units are currently rented. Another owner is trying to sell their unit and told the board that the potential buyer has a hard time acquiring a loan due to the high percentage of rented units. What is the best ratio of owner-occupied versus rented units in a small complex like ours? When limiting the units rented, can the board members make an addendum to the CCR? Iran ordered to pay $10.5 billion for 9/11 by US judge By Desert Star Staff A US judge ordered Iran to pay over $10 billion in damages to families of victims who died on September 11, 2001 – even though there is no evidence of Tehran’s direct connection to the attack. The same judge earlier cleared Saudi Arabia from culpability. US District Judge George Daniels in New York issued the default judgment on Wednesday. Under the ruling, Tehran was ordered to pay $7.5 billion to 9/11 victims’ families, including $2 million to each victim’s estate for pain and suffering, and another $6.88 million in punitive damages. Insurers who paid for property damage and claimed their businesses were interrupted were awarded an additional $3 billion in the ruling. The ruling is noteworthy particularly since none of the 19 hijackers on September 11 were Iranian citizens. Fifteen were citizens of Saudi Arabia, while two were from the United Arab

Emirates, and one each from Egypt and Lebanon. Saudi Arabia was legally cleared from paying billions in damages to families of 9/11 victims last year, after Judge Daniels dismissed claims that the country provided material support to the terrorists and ruled that Riyadh had sovereign immunity. Saudi attorneys argued in court that there was no evidence directly linking the country to 9/11. In response to the latest ruling, Hossein Sheikholeslam, a senior aide to Iran’s parliamentary speaker, called the decision “absurd and ridiculous.” “I never heard about this ruling and I’m very much surprised because the judge had no reason whatsoever to issue such a ruling… Iran never took part in any court hearings related to the events of September 11, 2001,” he told Sputnik. “Even if such an absurd and ridiculous decision has been made, the charges simply hold no water because Iran has

never been mentioned at any stage of the investigation and the trials that followed.” While Sheikholeslam argued that Iran didn’t take part in related hearings, that lack of participation may have contributed to the decision. A default judgment is typically issued when one of the parties involved in a case does not respond to court summons or appear in court to make their case. Judge Daniels found that Iran failed to defend itself against claims that it played a role in 9/11. Iran believes the lawsuit is unnecessary because it says it did not participate in in the attack. In the US, Tehran’s role in 9/11 has been debated heavily over the years. The 9/11 Commission Report stated that some hijackers moved through Iran and did not have their passports stamped. It also stated that Hezbollah, which the US designates as a terrorist organization supported by Iran, provided

“advice and training” to Al-Qaeda members. In a court document filed in 2011 regarding the latest case, plaintiffs claimed Hezbollah “provided material support” to Al-Qaeda, such as facilitating travel, plus “direct support” for the 9/11 attacks. As a result, the plaintiffs argued Iran was liable. However, the commission report itself found no evidence to suggest Iran was aware of the 9/11 plot, and suggested the possibility that if Hezbollah was tracking the movements of Al-Qaeda members, it may not have been eyeing those who became hijackers on 9/11. While the report suggested further investigation into the issue, President George W. Bush has said, “There was no direct connection between Iran and the attacks of September 11.” Iran, inhabited mostly by Shia Muslims, has also denied any connection to Al-Qaeda – a militant Sunni group – and cooperation between the

two has been questioned due to religious differences. Al-Qaeda views the Shia as heretics, for example. “The people who committed those terrorist attacks were neither friends nor allies of Iran,” Iran Press Editor-in-Chief Emad Abshenas told Sputnik. “They were our sworn enemies, members of Al-Qaeda, which considers Iran as their enemy. Fifteen out of the 19 terrorists were Saudi citizens, which happens to be America’s best friend. The remaining four terrorists lived in Saudi Arabia and enjoyed Saudi support. Therefore the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks had nothing to do with Iran.” How the case moves forward after Daniels’ ruling is unclear. According to Bloomberg, it can be very hard to obtain damages from another country, but plaintiffs might try to do so by targeting Iranian funds frozen by the US.

By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO Hundreds of teachers are rallying today for a better contract with the City College of San Francisco, and then heading to a downtown hotel to tackle statewide education issues at the California Federation of Teachers’ annual convention. More than 600 educators will attend the conference, where the theme is “Activate Labor for Justice.” CFT president Joshua Pechthalt, said the issue at CCSF is intransigence by college administrators at the bargaining table in the wake of an attempt by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges to shut the college down. “They’ve lost thousands of students as a result of

this threat to close down the City College of San Francisco,” he said. “And now the faculty - after years of shouldering these cuts really are asking for a decent salary increase, in a city that is very expensive to live in.” Pechthalt said educators at the conference will be discussing their support for a ballot measure in November that would extend Proposition 30, which passed four years ago and taxed the wealthy in order to fund schools. In order to address the teacher shortage, he said, the state needs to better fund programs to forgive teachers’ student loans. Even more difficult, he said, will be changing the narrative of anti-publiceducation interests, who persist in blaming teachers

for problems in the schools. “The toxic environment that surrounds public education has discouraged people from going into the teaching profession,” Pechthalt said, “and, frankly,

has encouraged veteran teachers to get out.” One topic at the convention will be the current anti-labor case before the U.S. Supreme Court. In Friedrichs vs. California

Both Fields and Shapiro told Buzzfeed that they submitted their resignations on Sunday. He argued that company chairman Steve Bannon had turned the site into â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personal Pravdaâ&#x20AC;?, abandoned, and undercut his own reporter â&#x20AC;&#x153;Breitbart News not only stood by and did nothing outside of tepidly asking for an apology, they then attempted to abandon Michelle by silencing staff from tweeting or talking about the issue,â&#x20AC;? Shapiro wrote in his resignation statement. Following these resignations, the website briefly published a story saying Shapiro â&#x20AC;&#x153;announced Sunday evening via left-wing

Buzzfeed that he is abandoning Andrew Breitbartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifelong best friend, widow, handpicked management team and friends in pursuit of an elusive contributorship at the Fox News Channel.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friends of Hamas could not be found for comment,â&#x20AC;? it added. The article was quickly removed from the website, with Breitbartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s counsel Joel Pollack saying it was published â&#x20AC;&#x153;as a result of a misunderstanding.â&#x20AC;? The controversy began at a Trump campaign event on March 8, during which Fields attempted to ask the GOP frontrunner a question after a press conference. Fields claimed that someone grabbed her arm tightly and pulled her away from Trump. The Washington Postâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ben Terris identified the perpetrator as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Corey,â&#x20AC;? indicating Lewandowski. Soon afterwards, Politico published an audio recording and transcript of Fields and Terris describing what happened during the incident. The recording allegedly includes Lewandowskiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voice. Fields also posted a photo on Twitter showing her bruised arm. However, Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaign has adamantly denied the allegations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This was, in my opinion, made up,â&#x20AC;? Trump said to CNN. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everybody said nothing happened. Perhaps she made the story up. I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what happened.â&#x20AC;? Initially, Breitbart sided with Fields, saying that if Lewandowski did grab her then he owes the reporter an immediate apology. Later in the week, the website published another account disputing Fieldsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and Terrisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; story. The article claimed that Terris mistakenly identified a security guard as Lewandowski. Another story from Breitbart included alleged text messages from the Trump campaign manager â&#x20AC;&#x153;provingâ&#x20AC;? he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t acknowledge

the assault. A Daily Beast report previously claimed he admitted to the accusation. Afterwards, the Beast published another story featuring video that it says â&#x20AC;&#x153;definitivelyâ&#x20AC;? shows Lewandowski grabbing Fields. The controversy had already led to the resignation of Breitbart spokesman Kurt Bardella, who argued the site was biased in favor of Trump. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My own personal observation is that there is a cycle of behavior that is

escalating and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening exclusively at Donald Trump events,â&#x20AC;? Bardella said in a statement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is wrong, disgusting and indicative of an ugliness that is contaminating the public and political discourse in our country.â&#x20AC;? This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the first time the Trump campaignâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s run-in with the media has garnered headlines. In late February, the US Secret Service tackled a Time Magazine photographer. The incident occurred as Black Lives Matter protesters

interrupted a Trump rally. When the photojournalist tried to snap photos outside a media holding area, he was slammed to the ground by Secret Service. Physical confrontations at Trump events have increasingly sparked concern in the US. Critics of the frontrunner argue that Trump is inciting violence with his heated rhetoric, while his supporters say protesters are looking to disrupt freedom of speech.

Three California philanthropic foundations win prestigious Impact Award By Desert Star Staff Three California philanthropic foundations have won Impact Awards this year from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy. The award honors foundations that make grants to encourage diversity and empowerment of marginalized communities. One of the winners, the Sandler Foundation, has given out more than $750 million and has founded a range of nonprofits including ProPublica, which funds investigative journalism, and The Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank. Herbert Sandler, president of the Sandler Foundation, said his organization is dedicated to improving the rights, opportunities and wellbeing of the disadvantaged. “The Center for American Progress is one of the most effective, powerful think tanks in the country,” he said, “and one of the very few that are of the size and strength and competence and intellectual

power to combat the much larger group of strong think tanks on the right.” Another honoree, the Ventura-based Patagonia Foundation, funds small, grassroots activist organizations focused on the environment. Kim Fraczek is co-director of Sane Energy Project, a group funded by Patagonia that is trying to stop the proposed Spectra Energy Algonquin natural-gas pipeline that would run from New York to Massachusetts. “We are organizing a direct action campaign where the fracked gas pipeline crosses 105 feet away from the Indian Point Nuclear Facility 30 miles north of New York City,” she said. “If the pipeline ruptures, we face catastrophe for 20 million people.” The third winner of the NCRP Impact Award is the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, based in San Francisco. Haas funds many initiatives, including the Proteus Fund’s Civil Marriage Collaborative. Paul Di Donato, interim president at the Proteus Fund,

Independent consultants find it easier to balance career and family By Desert Star Staff Finding the right balance between career and home life continues to be a significant issue for parents of young children. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, more than half of American women believe that children are better off when a parent stays home to concentrate on family. But at the same time, 51 percent of women with children younger than 18 have told Pew that being a working parent made it harder to advance in their job or career. While women may be concerned that temporarily becoming a stay-at-home mother hampers their career aspirations, many professionals are discovering a new way to achieve both professional and personal goals: independent consulting. “It’s possible to keep a foot in both camps and be very successful,” says Aaron Zwas, an independent consultant and author of “Transition to Independence” (www.t2iplan.com). As an independent

consultant for 15 years, Zwas works from home and shifts his hours in a way that lets him actively manage the family and home with his wife. “I help out with the usual school and activity drop-offs,” says Zwas, “but we also have much more quality time with each other, too. And that’s something that everyone wants. “Independent consultants are becoming a mainstay of the modern workforce, injecting businesses and organizations with fresh ideas. In the last four decades, independent consulting has been one of the biggest growth areas in professional employment.” That’s because the world is changing as many employers reduce their staffs and contract out for more services. Zwas says a few tips to keep in mind if you plan to become an independent consultant are: • Have a conversation. Talk with your spouse, other family members and anyone else who might be affected about what you’re planning

to do and explain why it’s important to you. Be patient and listen to any advice and feedback they have. • Stick with what you know and like. Even as an independent, you may need to rely on the services of others. Be sure to include in your planning whether you will need to contract out in such areas as accounting, website development and marketing. “I know many women who have made the choice to take a couple of years off from work to focus on family,” Zwas says. “The majority of them absolutely want to get back into the workforce, but feel that it’s like going from zero to 100 immediately. History in Granite a Monumental Success

CA in Imperial County, off Interstate 8 at Exit 164 just a few miles from Yuma, AZ is paradise for history fans.

Founded by Jacques - Andre and Felicia Istel, the museum was officially “created by law in March 1986.” There’s no front door and there are no galleries requiring security guards. This is a museum unlike any other in America, size and content wise. And it is worth the drive, no matter where you began your journey. Don’t look for neon lights; the museum is more a mirage rising from the sand dunes. Look up! A 25 foot high sculpture marks the entrance; you have arrived at a museum home to 467 granite “panels” , the rectangular shaped weigh 477 lbs., the triangular, 351 lbs. When you see one of the largest souvenirs of the Eiffel Tower, Mr. Istel explained it is actually part of a stairway from the original Eiffel Tower. This unique welcome to a museum celebrating world history with every footstep. And it starts when you enter a pyramid which Mr. Istel says symbolizes “The Center of the Universe”. A tour guide is on hand to explain the mystery. “ Mr. Istel presents his unconventional chronicle of history bigger than life,” said photographer Timmy

Shulman Woods as she captured the engraved and etched granite monuments. “This is the most monumental library I’ve ever seen, there’s nothing to compare it to,” she remarked as she carefully read monuments from conventional coverage such as “The Mayflower and the Plymouth Colony “ to “From the Annals of Crime in America” and “Coping with Terrorism”. The granite “pages” are impressive in diversity and dramatic in design. We met visitors from Ireland, France and China during our tour, our tour guide was from New Hampshire. “The educational value of The Museum of History in Granite leaves an impression on students,” remarked a high school history teacher during our informal tour. “This exhibit goes beyond a textbook. The dedication of the History of California opens on March 19th , Saturday with a full day of activities.” According to Mr. Istel a granite monument will presented to The State of California The Museum of History Granite has a “monumental” event planned for this special day starting at 10 AM with a “Service

Photo by Ed Krieger After sitting through some unsatisfying evenings of theatre, every once in a while I see a production that leaves me emotionally moved, reminding me of why I love the potential magic of theatre. Last year it was the stunning production of “Spring Awakening” by Deaf West Theatre, which went on to New York. Right up there is the brilliant production of the world premiere of “BLOOD,” produced by the newly formed company, The Garage, and currently on stage at The Complex. Award-winning director extraordinaire Robert Allan Ackerman collaborated with a group of very talented young actors, work shopping the source material, which evolved into this riveting, highly stylized political thriller with fabulous original music and songs by Nick Ackerman and Chris Cester. The sound design by Joseph “Sloe” Slawinski often is a comedic counterbalance to the unfolding drama. The story, part fact

and part fiction, revolves around a scandal in Japan that most Americans never heard of. In the early 1980s an American pharmaceutical company knowingly sold HIV infected blood to Japan with instructions to heat the blood, which would supposedly destroy the virus. The Ministry of Health claimed that Japanese blood was immune to the virus and refused to issue orders to heat the blood. Subsequently, it was distributed to many hospitals, causing the deaths of 2,000 people, predominantly hemophiliacs, who contracted AIDS. The play begins in the tradition of Kubuki Theatre, where the rapid clapping of two hardwood sticks called clappers,(hyoshigi) played by Taishin Takibayashi, signals the start of the play. They were sounded again at the beginning of Act II. We are introduced to a Jewish-American free-lance journalist named Jules, well played by Alexa Hamilton, who has returned to Japan following the death of her nine-year-old

secretly help them tell the truth about all the deaths. As time goes by, Koyo Ninomiya, a nine-year-old boy played by a female (Miho Ando) contracts AIDS and thinking that his illness is a death sentence, he just wants an apology from the government for what it did to him. The performance of this young woman as an AIDS victim is quite stirring.* After years of stonewalling by Dr. Kazama, head of the Ministry of Health, played by a fascinating Toshi Toda, he finally humbles himself and gives the young man the apology he has been seeking. Lest you think this is a “heavy” play, the creative staging by Ackerman results in an entertaining interpretation son Noah who was killed in a of a difficult subject. For freak car accident. The hospital, which has assigned numbers instead of names to their HIV patients, refuses to do an autopsy, which sets in motion her pursuit of the truth of what killed her young friend. Even as more and more people begin to die from AIDS, none of the victims’ families come forward. They are ashamed and don’t want to cause any trouble. There is also the inherent respect for authorities, which further impacts on their reluctance to confront the government’s decision to not purify the blood. Deaths are spreading throughout the country and hospitals are involved in the cover-up. Eventually, Yoji Kurosawa a young Korean attorney, nicely portrayed by Sohee Park, reluctantly begins to work with Jules. They enlist the assistance of Eiko Asami, sensitively portrayed by Kazumi Aihara. She is a nurse in one of the hospitals and although her safety is at risk, agrees to March 16, 2016

perfectly executed by this gifted ensemble. There are musical jokes with some lyrics spoken in rhyme. The director’s comprehensive understanding of theatricality equipped him to incorporate different genres from Rap and Kabuki, to the frenetic movements of the Keystone Cops, the Marx Brothers, and moments straight out of Gilbert & Sullivan. In the hands of a less skilled director, it could have resulted in a series of disconnected scenes, but instead, the varieties of styles seamlessly blend between harsh reality and satire. The rest of this amazing ensemble includes Mika Santoh, who, wearing a traditional kimono, plays the devoted, caring wife of Dr. Kazama. Other members, each of who play multiple roles, including the zany singing and dancing ministers, are Michael Joseph, Anthony Gros, Takaaki Hirakawa, Andrew Nakajima, and Daryl L. Padilla whose rubber facial expressions

the actors achieved a highly professional performance. This profound subject matter in the hands of a less skilled director and ensemble could be in danger of becoming diatribe, which is not theatrically interesting. Instead, Ackerman and his company have created an evening of unforgettable theatre and in my opinion, this production should be Broadway bound. *This character is based on a real person who actually survived AIDS and is now a minister in the Japanese Parliament. Photo by Michael Lamont. “Sex With Strangers,” written by Laura Eason, is set in a bed and breakfast in rural Michigan in Act I, and in Olivia’s Chicago apartment in Act II. As the play opens Olivia (Rebecca Pidgeon) is curled up on the couch reading proof sheets of her latest manuscript. This marks her second book, which may never be published because she is still shell shocked from the critical reception for her first novel She is totally snowed-in; in the now deserted B & B. Suddenly, her silent world is jarred by the sounds of a car pulling up in the driveway, followed by a loud knock at the front door. At this point Ethan (Stephen Louis Grush) enters the scene. He is a brash young writer who, it turns out, is doing very well writing about his constant sexual exploits with women he picks up in bars each and every week. He then graphically details his brief, steamy encounters on the Internet. Classy, no, but successful-yes. In fact his book, based on his sexual prowess, is being made into a movie.

He is younger and far less polished than the educated, somewhat prim Olivia, but, it turns out, he has something to offer her besides his body. It turns out that Ethan. A fan of Olivia’s failed first novel, wants her to publish it again, using a new name and a new book jacket. He is certain, with his help; she will gain the literary following and fame her unique, elegant style deserves. As Act I progresses he also tries to convince her to let him read her newest manuscript. He is certain he can restart her career using his digital age skills and his agent Act one, like a romance novel, has plenty of sexual forays (tastefully done) and many trips to the bedroom. This coupling is coupled with conversations about writing, marketing and the importance of reaching out to the world with one‘s writing talents. But who is Ethan anyway? Is there more to him than his sexual blogs? And will Olivia face rejection yet again due to his seductive persuasion? What is most interesting about Eason’s play is the

And is there is a future for this odd couple? The first act seems overly long and the set changes could use more innovation as we shift from the B & B in Michigan to Olivia‘s Chicago digs. The couch, for example, would have looked different with a colorful spread and pillows as well as different floor lamp. The rain wasn’t very heavy but it took almost an hour to dry the court for play. This probably took the momentum away from the match. Friday Night was the Salute to our troops and starts before

the night game. Serena won her match Friday night and continued on to try for that magical win. The afternoon doubles match with contenders John Isner and Milos Raonic was exciting and lasted all three

sets with a tiebreaker to make it more thrilling. They ended up beating Andy Murray and Colin Fleming. I am looking forward to more matches between the top contenders in tennis.

The Warburton Celebrity Jam & Golf

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 6th Annual Warburton Celebrity Golf, Music, Run event was held at the JW Marriott Desert Springs & Classic Club golf course. They started with a 5K run over the weekend. This is a 4-day event that includes a party with Songwriters and a dinner on Thursday night the 10th. A pairings Party on Friday the 11th includes the pairings and another dinner. Later on Friday night, the 11th was the Celebrity Jam Session that is really a Jam Session. The Jam is an intimate setting where guests can get close to the stage to see all their favorite singers and musicians. The party gets rocking early with the Sixwire Band starting off the JAM. This event has taken on a new mantle where participants can run, play golf, have several dinners, attend a songwriters party, a JAM session of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Musicians and attend a Gala with more celebrity entertainment and get up close and personal with the celebrities. And all this while supporting and benefitting a worthwhile charity like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Patrick Warburton and Clarke Rheney have made this a first class event in the Desert. Over a dozen board members helped put this

Other singers and guitarists were Jeff BaxterSteely Dan, Don Felder-Eagles, Tom Johnson-The Doobie Brothers, Robby KriegerDoors, Tommy Thayer-Kiss, Mike Mills-REM, With Phil Chen-bassist-Doors and Danny Seraphine who plays a mean drum. There were other singers and guitarists that made up this JAM. The Finale had Thayer, Alice, Krieger, Mills, and more

all jamming to the wee hours of the morning. They had the guests dancing, moving to the music and videoing on their cell phones. It’s a jumping night. Patrick Warburton and his wife founded this event after visiting St Jude Hospital. They continue to be a part of St. Jude and its mission. St Jude treats 260 kids a day and costs 2 million dollars a day to operate. This event has raised over 3 millions dollars and will beat last years record amount with over one million dollars for St. Jude. They hope to help stop all cancers, especially in children, and no one ever receives a bill for medical help at St. Jude. The Warburton Celebrity Tournament is now the topfundraising golf-tournament

The connection between actor and audience is instantaneous. It can be both breathtaking and mesmerizing; it is often transformative on the part of the audience. Those are powerful components that make an evening spent in the

theatre well worth the effort. CV REP Artistic Director and founder Ron Celona once again brings a potent and compelling production to Rancho Mirage audiences. This time it’s a production of playwright Doug Wright’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning drama “I Am My Own Wife”, performed by gifted New York Citybased actor Vince Gatton. a brilliant tour de force performance, speaking and translating as he goes in English, German, and French. It’s an astonishing accomplishment by an actor. Playwright Doug Wright, when asked why he chose to craft his play about Germany’s famous transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, along with her memories, diaries and comments from others during the German Weimar days, says that it is only fitting for a single actor to play all 35 roles. His ‘raison d’etre’ reply was “Charlotte had to adopt a variety of guises in order to survive after all, so why not let one actor adopt a variety of guises to tell her story?” And what a story it is. I had the opportunity last November to meet Doug Wright and briefly discuss his 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning play at the American Theatre Critic Association meeting in New York City. It was an illuminating experience. He’s tall, incredibly intelligent, extremely articulate, and easily accessible to interviewers. As the current President of the Dramatist’s Guild of America, Wright is a the ‘go-to playwright’ for theatre critics to interview. Celona’s seamless staging and direction of “I Am My

Own Wife” is a mesmerizing theatrical experience which is underscored by the amazing performance of his star Vince Gatton. There are so many finely nuanced character moments in this powerful and haunting re-creation of long ago events now brought so vividly to life by Gatton as Charlotte von Mahlsdorf and others in her complicated and complex life. It’s an exceptional performance that should not be missed by audiences of the Coachella Valley. In the technical department, Germany of the 1930s and 40s springs to life on a stunningly beautiful set created by Resident Production Design wizard Jimmy Cuomo that is creatively lit by Lighting Designer Moira Wilkie, who bathes the stage in moodinducing shafts of light. Chicago-bound Amtrak train with over 140 on board derails in Kansas

By Desert Star Staff Five rail cars of Amtrak’s Los Angeles-Chicago passenger train have derailed in Kansas. Approximately 142 passengers and crew were on board, 29 of whom sustained injuries and are being treated in local hospitals. UPDATE: The engineer applied the emergency brakes after noticing a “significant bend in a rail,” an unnamed official familiar with the investigation told AP Monday afternoon. Investigators are now checking if a vehicle may have damaged the track, the agency reported. The incident occurred in Gray County, Kansas, some 3 miles (about 5km) outside Cimarron. “Just after midnight CT, Amtrak Southwest Chief Train 4, operating from Los Angeles to Chicago, derailed some cars approximately 20 miles west of Dodge City, Kansas, on BNSF track,” Amtrak

said in a statement, adding there were approximately 128 passengers and 14 crew members on board. Local emergency responders provided on-site response, while approximately 20 passengers were transported to hospitals in Garden City and Dodge City, the passenger rail service said. The number of hospitalized increased to 29, Gray County spokeswoman Ashley Rogers said later in the evening, Associated Press reported. The victims sustained no life-threatening wounds, she added. Susan Morgan, the mother of one of the passengers, told KAKE News the Southwest Chief train was heading east from Los Angeles toward Chicago. Morgan said her daughter, a college student in Arizona, was helped out of a window to safety after the train started shaking while traveling at 75 miles per hour (120km).

Eight people were killed and over 200 injured last year in May when an Amtrak train heading from Washington to

New York tumbled from its rails just outside Philadelphia. The train was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour (over

twice the speed limit) when it entered a curve in the tracks and derailed, investigators said.

In Northern California, authorities reported that lakes Shasta and Oroville haven’t been this full since 2013, delighting a state in its fifth year of drought but falling short of ending concerns about the drought.

Lake Shasta, the state’s largest reservoir, was at 79 percent capacity on Monday and at 103 percent of its historical average for this time of year. The 21-mile long reservoir north of Redding now holds 3.6 million acre-feet of water, enough to supply 3 million to 6 million households for a year. The federal reservoir is critical to farms and cities throughout the agriculturerich Central Valley. “It’s definitely welcome news, but it’s kind of a mixed bag for us,” said Shane Hunt, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. “We still don’t have water in all the right places to meet demand going into peak season.” For example, man-made Lake Melones in the Sierra Nevada foothills remains at just 22 percent of capacity and well below the historical average. The state’s second largest reservoir, Lake Oroville, was

Jury awards Erin Andrews $55M in lawsuit over nude video

By Sheila Burke NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A jury awarded Erin Andrews $55 million on Monday in her lawsuit against a stalker who bought a hotel room next to her and secretly recorded a nude video, finding that the hotel companies and the stalker shared in the blame. After a full day of deliberations, the panel said the stalker was responsible for 51 percent of the verdict and the two hotel companies should share the rest, which is nearly $27 million. Andrews, a Fox Sports reporter and co-host of the TV show “Dancing with the Stars,” wept as jurors announced the verdict. She hugged her attorneys, family and several jurors after the verdict was read. She appeared to sign an autograph for at least one juror. The jury heard directly from Andrews, who testified that she was humiliated, shamed and suffers from depression as a result of the video, which has been viewed by millions of people online. She had asked for $75 million. Andrews’ parents described for jurors the terror they and their daughter felt after

learning of the video but not knowing who took it, where it was shot and if someone was still watching their daughter. An FBI investigation would later reveal that Michael David Barrett shot videos in hotels in Nashville and Columbus, Ohio, and posted them online. The trial focused on the video shot in 2008 at the Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt. “I’ve been honored by all the support from victims around the world. Their outreach has helped me be able to stand up and hold accountable those whose job it is to protect everyone’s safety, security and privacy,” she said in a statement posted on her Twitter account. On Friday, Davidson County Circuit Court Judge Hamilton Gayden found Barrett at fault and left it up to jurors to decide if the hotel owner, West End Hotel Partners, and former operator, Windsor Capital Group, should share any responsibility. The hotel is a franchise and Marriott was not part of the trial. Attorneys for the companies argued that while what happened to Andrews was terrible, the stalker should

be solely to blame because he was a determined criminal. The attorneys also suggested that Andrews’ rise in her career showed she did not suffer severe and permanent distress. After the verdict, they said they were disappointed and not sure if they would appeal. They noted their cooperation in the FBI investigation and said the case had changed the hotel industry to make rooms more secure. Andrews said her stalker’s arrest and imprisonment did not make the nightmare go away. She broke down on the stand repeatedly, saying she continues to suffer because people are still watching the videos and taunting her about them. “This happens every day of my life,” Andrews said tearfully. “Either I get a tweet or somebody makes a comment in the paper or somebody sends me a still video to my Twitter or someone screams it at me in the stands and I’m right back to this. I feel so embarrassed and I am so ashamed.” Barrett pleaded guilty to stalking Andrews, altering hotel room peepholes and

taking nude videos of her. He was sentenced to 2½ years in prison. He did not appear at the trial. Andrews has maintained that someone at the hotel gave out her room number to Barrett and honored his request to be placed near hear. She said no one ever told her that he asked to be in an adjoining or connecting room. Had she known that, she said she would’ve called police. Barrett was a Chicagoarea insurance company executive who frequently traveled around the country when he took the video of Andrews at the Nashville hotel in September 2008. He shot about 4 1/2 minutes of nude video of her while she was inside a room that was in an alcove off a main hallway. The video was played for jurors. In Barrett’s videotaped deposition, he said that he alone was to blame. He said he correctly guessed that she would be at the hotel - it was the closest one to the Vanderbilt football game Andrews was covering - by calling and pretending to be in a group with Andrews and asking for confirmation of the reservations. He said he used an inhouse employee phone to learn her room number, and made a request to be in the room next to Andrews. During closing arguments, one of Andrews’ lawyers said Barrett tried to shoulder responsibility because he holds a grudge against her over his conviction and didn’t want her to win any money. Barrett said he posted the recordings online after celebrity gossip website TMZ refused to buy them. Desert Ensemble Theatre Presents New Drama

By Jack Lyons Acclaimed Palm Springs playwright/ director Tony Padilla picked up his playwriting pen along with his creative thinking cap and added two new characters to one of his award-winning plays of some fifteen years ago. The result is a rich exploration of how four individuals - one a husband and wife and two female ‘old maids’ - react to the discovery of finding an abandoned baby in a trash container in New York City’s Central Park. “Endangered Species” written and directed by Padilla stars Bonnie Gilgallon as Tina, a suburban Chicago housewife married to David a successful businessman

played by Alan Berry. The couple married over twenty years are in New York on a holiday where they plan to relax and recharge their romantic batteries. When Tina discovers the baby in the trash container, she tells David to do something. Instead of doing ‘something’ he backs off saying “we don’t want to get involved with someone else’s problem, especially tonight. Remember, we have dinner reservations and the ritziest restaurant in New York, and tickets to the hottest show on Broadway. Let’s just leave”. Tina is horrified by David’s callousness. David exposes a side of himself that Tina has never seen before. It’s often been said that we really don’t know one another’s true nature until it’s been tested in stressful

However, I will say, that the audience must wait until the second couple: Yo Younger as Teresa, and her traveling companion Daria, played by Denise Strand, discover the baby as well. The talented performances of the four actors is what makes this somewhat off-putting story

work. Theatrical drama is meant to challenge the status quo (comedy plays do it as well). The playwright’s message or personal point of view it’s also meant to get the audience to think introspectively. The beauty of theatre is that it allows for ‘what if’ scenarios for audiences, playwrights, and actors alike. This production is a true ensemble effort mirroring the name of the
