‘Total mayhem’ Attacks in Brussels: Political cause or religious fanaticism? Chaotic scene after Brussels’ airport blast. By Desert Star Staff One man who witnessed the fatal explosions at Brussels’ Zaventem Airport spoke to RT about what he’s been through. “It was total mayhem. Blood, dust, people screaming and running away,” Rob Verreykken said.
“I was around 100 meters from the entrance of the airport when I heard a large blast and saw this screen of dust coming out. It was immediately clear for everyone that it was an attack. People started screaming and running away. We then went into hiding
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Dezart Performs, one of the Coachella Valley’s leading theatre companies, held their annual fund-raising event last week at the Camelot Theatres with their popular tribute to ‘Old Time Radio’ (OTR) called “On the Air”. Prior to the main event on Thursday, March 17th, the company gathered for a relaxing, fun time sharing old theatre and show business stories with one another and the event sponsors, donors, the media, and friends and
relatives of the celebrity performers at the Saguaro Hotel, Palm Springs. The stage of the Camelot theatre on March 17th was turned into a faux radio station where broadcast recreations of shows of the 1940’s and 50’s, complete with announcer Bob Hardt, sound effects artist Andrea McGuire, Dezart Trio Singers Francesca Amari, Darci Daniels, and Jaci Davis, who sang the jingles about the advertised products of actual sponsors of the event, took place. BNP Paribas Open ‘Wednesday’
Story and Photos by Pat Krause Tennis at the BNP Paribas Open tournament has been an exciting event each day. The matches have gone on to three sets with tiebreakers many times during the week. Lesser-known players have upended some of the top seeds. The length of the games is legendary. On Wednesday the games went on and on to where the players did not get on the court until a couple hours after their presumed start times. Wednesday saw some fantastic tennis being played by some of the younger players when they went up against the more experienced pros. I watched some of the play on Wed. afternoon between the women, Agnieszka Radwanska and
Petra Kvitova. Radwanska won the first set 6-2 but had a hard time winning the second that ended up giving her the win with a long tiebreaker that kept going back and forth. The following match was Rafael Nadal and 18-yearold Alexander Zverev. Zverev is going to be a force to be watched in years to come. His huge serve gave Nadal some worrisome moments. This young man beat Nadal the first set that went into a screaming tiebreaker. Nadal came back in the second set to win 6-0. The third match was again, an edge of your seat game, as Zverev came close to beating Nadal that would have been a real feat for someone so young to topple the number 4 seed. A few errors made the difference between a win and
a loss for this young player. Novak Djokovic played Feliciano Lopez that was another long game. Djokovic won the match 6-3,6-3 but Lopez played extremely well against the number 1 seed with long volleys. Serena Williams was supposed to Rafael Nadal. Photo by Pat Krause start play a little after 7 but she did not even get on the court until almost 9. She beat Simona Halep 6-4,6-3 and will play in the finals against Victoria Azarenka for the Title. It was a late night for all the fans before the end of play for the night. IRS Targets Audits for Taxpayers who may use these Deductions.... Part 3
By Janice Gough This week is the conclusion of my articles, on the primary “Red Flags”, which could trigger a tax audit. 1. Abusive Tax Shelters According to the IRS, abusive tax schemes have evolved from structuring of improper domestic and foreign trust arrangements into sophisticated strategies that take advantage of certain foreign jurisdictions’ financial secrecy laws and the availability of credit/debit cards issued from offshore financial institutions. These schemes can end up costing

taxpayers more in back taxes, penalties, and interest than they saved in the first place. Taxpayers should also remember that promoters of these schemes often use financial instruments improperly to facilitate tax evasion. Taxpayers should be aware that an arrangement is an abusive scheme if it uses unnecessary steps or a form that does not match its substance. Trusts also commonly show up in abusive tax structures, promising reduced taxable income, and inflated deductions for personal expenses, reduced (or zero) self-employment taxes and reduced estate or gift transfer taxes. Such transactions commonly appear when taxpayers are transferring wealth from one generation to another. Questionable trusts rarely deliver the tax benefits promised, and are used mainly as a way to avoid income tax liability and hide assets from creditors, including the IRS. Taxpayers should seek the advice of a trusted professional before entering a trust arrangement.
2. Basket Options Loophole Last year, The Treasury Department and IRS have effectively halted the use of so-called “basket options.” It is a method of inappropriately taking investments with shortterm capital gains, taxed at 39.6%, and basketing them under a 2 year hedge fund, in which long-term capital gains are paid at 20%. It is a clearly a way to avoid the higher tax. It is also used as a tax loophole that high-networth investors use when investing in alternatives. 3.Fivolous Tax Arguments Promoters of frivolous arguments encourage taxpayers to make unreasonable and outlandish claims to avoid paying the taxes they owe, such as contending that taxpayers can refuse to pay taxes on religious or moral grounds by invoking the First Amendment. They also include contentions that the only “employees” subject to federal income tax are employees of the federal government; and that only foreign-source income is taxable.

Board proxy, Earthquake Insurance, Replacing President By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL
Mr. Richardson: I serve on my HOA board, and every year we meet to discuss the annual budget. I sit through this discussion without understanding much of anything. After suffering through this protracted and painful discussion, I follow the vote of another director who has expertise in budget matters and who I respect. Could I just give a voting proxy to this other director regarding the budget and stay home? F.M., Irvine Dear F.M.: The budget process hopefully is started by your manager, who makes recommendations about
the HOA’s future probable expenses, based on its recent history. If the board is trying to do it on its own, the process can be difficult and more burdensome than it should be. The board has a responsibility to understand the budget, and to understand how and why it changes over the previous year, but a good manager should make that a much simpler task. California law does not recognize board proxies from one director to another regarding board votes. The law allows proxies from a member to another member (if your governing documents permit proxies), regarding votes of the entire membership. However, the law does not allow you to give your director vote to another director. It is OK to take into account another director’s input, but it still is your vote. Best, Kelly

Taxpayers have the right to contest their tax liabilities in court, the IRS noted, but using frivolous arguments is wrong, and these have been thrown out of court. Hello Mr. Richardson: I read your column frequently and respect you for truthful and insightful answers. Is it legal for the management company for HOA to discontinue earthquake insurance? Thank you, B.M., Riverside Dear B.M.: Your management company should not be deciding this – this is a board decision. Unless the CC&Rs or Bylaws require earthquake insurance, a board has the discretion to decide whether the association will buy such insurance for the coming year. However, given how important the issue is to the overall budget and also to the risk of earthquake loss, the board should inform the homeowners as to why it is or is not obtaining this insurance. HOA lawyers are conservative and usually recommend having such insurance, but some boards decide to forego it when balancing the cost against the overall budget. Disclosing these factors to the members is a good idea. Thanks, Kelly Dear Kelly: I am on a small condo board. The president is very controlling and makes every decision. He totally controls the management company, and they do not respond to any complaints

or requests to fix things unless they get his approval. He has been interviewing contractors without including me or the other board member. What can I and other homeowners do to remove him from the board? Sincerely, B.T., La Jolla
Dear B.T.: Your president is outside the normal role of HOA presidents. The president is one vote, and should not be the association’s “boss”– the normal authority is the board. The president may be outside corporate process and volunteer immunities. Sorry, but you and the other director are partly to blame, because officers serve at the pleasure of the board, and a majority can decide to change presidents in any open meeting, so long as reviewing or changing officers is on the agenda. Removing the president is not same as removing him from the board – that process is by membership vote. Regards, Kelly Kelly G. 3 Errors that could upend your retirement plans By Desert Star Staff As older Americans approach retirement, many may be realizing their financial planning isn’t what it should have been. That could mean they need to postpone retirement – or abandon the idea altogether. “Most people don’t spend much time even thinking about retirement,” says Stephen Ng, author of “10 Financial Mistakes You Should Avoid: Strategies Designed to Help Keep Your Money Safe and Growing” (www.stephenngfg.com). “They see it as a far-off time when they will have magically accumulated the money they need to jet around the world, pay for their grandchildren’s education, or otherwise have fun.” That leaves them unprepared for the reality, Ng says. They may need to work part-time just to get by. It’s possible they will outlive their money. “There’s no reason to work hard your whole life, but end up
without the money you could have had because you failed to avoid common mistakes people make,” Ng says. He says three examples of avoidable errors are: • Failing to understand taxation. Most money is taxable right away, but in some cases, such as with individual retirement accounts, taxes can be deferred. A third category, Ng says, is tax-free money. Examples of tax-free investments include municipal bonds, life insurance proceeds and 529 education savings plans. “Your goal should be to shift as much taxable money as possible into the tax-deferred or tax-free categories,” he says. • Acting without enough specialized advice. You might assume one financial advisor could handle all your investment needs. But that’s not necessarily the case, Ng says. The strongest plans usually benefit from multiple specialists. An eldercare attorney could be helpful for those 60 or older. A certified
public accountant could assist you with tax-avoidance strategies. An estate-planning attorney can help minimize estate and inheritance taxes. • Failing to appreciate the longevity risk. Medical advances allow people to live longer, but that creates a problem. Americans today are more likely than previous generations to outlive their money. They also are more
likely to need a nursing home or some other form of long-term care, which can be expensive. “It’s important to ask yourself whether you have enough money to handle expenses for as long as you live,” Ng says. “Do you have enough to cover inflation? To cover long-term care? To cover healthcare?” The sooner people address the longevity risk, he says, the more prepared they
may be to live a rich life. Ng insists there’s still time for those nearing retirement to make amends – at least to some degree – if they haven’t planned for what lies ahead. “I can’t stress this enough,” Ng says. “It’s never too late to formulate a plan. We can’t change the past, so the time to get started is now.”
By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - States that require ignition-interlock devices for all drunk-driving offenders have seen a 15 percent drop in deaths from alcohol-related crashes, according to a new report. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania found Driving Under the Influence (DUI) crashes take 11,000 American lives each year. Their report, published in the American Journal of Public Health, recommends more states require the devices for all DUI offenders. California only has a pilot program requiring ignition-interlock devices for five months for firsttime offenders in Tulare, Alameda, Los Angeles, and Sacramento counties.
Frank Harris, director of state government affairs for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, calls the pilot program wildly successful. “They have stopped over 124,000 drunkdriving attempts since July 2010 in California,” says Harris. “And these devices separate drinking from driving as long as they are installed on an offender’s vehicle. So, we know these devices are effective.” But the pilot program expires next year. The State Senate Public Safety Committee is considering a bill on March 29 that would make California the 26th state to require ignition-interlock devices for all offenders. Senate Bill 1046 also allows convicted drunk
drivers to get an ignition interlock in order to avoid a license suspension that could cost them their job. Currently, these drivers have to wait at least 30 days before getting an ignition interlock. Harris says some in the California Department of Motor Vehicles oppose the bill, believing the current system of suspensions to be effective. “By taking away someone’s license, it’s a hope for the best approach,” Harris says. “The DMV and the state government, using hope as a strategy to fight drunk driving, is not going to stop drunk driving.” Harris says he expects the DMV to release its own report on the pilot ignitioninterlock program soon.

FIFA seeks ‘tens of millions’ in damages from officials By Desert Star Staff FIFA has launched a legal offensive against indicted top officials of the organization, seeking “tens of millions in damages. The complaint acknowledges members of the organization’s executive committee sold their votes in World Cup hosting contests. The complaint, filed with the US attorney’s office in the eastern district of New York, refers to damages allegedly caused by 41 former FIFA officials and other football organizations, who have been indicted in an ongoing investigation by the US Department of Justice. According to the claim, which refers to FIFA as a “victimized institution, indicted executives have accrued more than US$28 million in pay, per diems, travel, and other costs since 2004. “The loss amounts are believed to be at least in the tens of millions of dollars, the document states. The defendants in the case “grossly abused their positions of trust to enrich themselves, while causing significant direct and proximate harm to FIFA, the document continues. “They looked for ways to line their own pockets and siphon off opportunities.
They did violence to FIFA’s principles, goals and objectives as they promoted their own self-interests and sought to enrich themselves at FIFA’s and football’s expense. Those sentiments were echoed by Gianni Infantino, the organization’s newly elected president. The officials “abused the positions of trust they held at FIFA and other international football organizations and caused serious and lasting damage to FIFA, its member associations, and the football community, Infantino said in a Wednesday statement. “The monies they pocketed belonged to global football and were meant for the development and promotion of the game. FIFA as the world governing body of football wants that money back and we are determined to get it no matter how long it takes, he continued. Infantino went on to state that once the money is recovered, it will be directed back to its original purpose. “These dollars were meant to build football fields, not mansions and pools; to buy football kits, not jewelry and cars; and to fund youth player and coach development, not to
By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX - A Phoenix woman arrested on Saturday as part of a protest against presidential candidate Donald Trump claims officials at the
Maricopa County Jail racially profiled her because she has a Latino surname. Jacinta Gonzalez said an arraignment court judge ordered she be turned over to
underwrite lavish lifestyles for football and sports marketing executives, he said. The complaint specifically acknowledges that FIFA executives previously sold their votes in World Cup hosting contests. “It is now apparent that multiple members of FIFA’s Executive Committee abused their positions and sold their votes on multiple occasions, the document reads. The document specifically states that former executive committee members Chuck Blazer, Jack Warner, and
other individuals engineered a $10-million payoff from the South African Football Association in exchange for executive committee votes regarding the 2010 World Cup, which was eventually awarded to South Africa. It goes on to state that bribes were also paid by Morocco in the battle for the 1998 World Cup, which ultimately went to France. The complaint also suggests that votes were sold in elections for the FIFA presidency, and that various football officials had corruptly
profited from the award of media rights to World Cup qualifying matches. FIFA landed in hot water in May 2015, when the US investigation began to reveal widespread corruption within the organization. So far, $190 million in assets have been forfeited by the 41 officials and marketing executives named in the investigation over the past 12 months. A total of $100 million in seizures has also taken place, relating to the defendants’ “felonious schemes.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, although two white men arrested with her were released. Gonzalez, who is an American citizen, claims in a video statement posted on Sunday that she was not treated equally. “Yesterday when we were arrested, I know that the two colleagues I was arrested with were released, said Gonzalez. “But because my last name is Gonzalez, I was immediately questioned by ICE and placed on a detainer. After they were let go and were able to go home, I was transferred to immigration custody.
Gonzalez, a field organizer for the Latino rights group Mijente, said she was arrested after she chained herself to a vehicle to block traffic headed to a Trump political rally. She was charged with blocking a public thoroughfare. A spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office could not confirm details of her arrest and detention, but said everyone booked into the jail is routinely interview by ICE. Gonzales said she was part of a multiracial coalition of activists peacefully protesting the Trump rally, angry over the candidate’s stance against immigrants.
“The same words that Trump says over and over are starting to get into our state legislatures, she said. “Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Pennsylvania - all of these states are seeing anti-immigrant bills, like SB 1070 so many years back, just because Trump is opening up that space. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Joe Arpaio are under a federal court order to refrain from racial profiling after rights groups filed suit over immigration raids by the sheriff’s office. Arpaio has endorsed Trump for president.

Prom 101: Three Fun Facts for the Big Dance By Desert Star Staff If you remember your own prom like it was yesterday, you may be surprised to learn that kids today are celebrating the big dance differently these days. Here are three major ways the big dance has changed: • Teens are no longer simply asking their dates to attend the dance with them. Elaborate “promposals” include airplane banner fly-overs and giant duct tape posters. • Last year, the average household spent $918 on
prom, a price tag that’s skyrocketed over the years. Girls are typically spending around $449 between a dress, accessories, professional hair and nails, etc. And while guys generally spend less, they’re still shelling out an average of $282 on prom-related expenses. • With a look toward college, which has increased in cost by 40 percent in the last decade, many teens are finding creative ways to save on prom expenses, such as wearing Duck Tape. The Duck brand Stuck at
Prom Scholarship Contest encourages creative promgoers to design their own Duck Tape prom wear for the chance to win college scholarships. Annually, the contest offers more than $50,000 in scholarship dollars and has attracted more than 7,000 entrants over the last 15 years. For more information about the contest, visit www.stuckatprom.com. While much has changed about prom, music, dancing and lifelong memories are still essential parts of the fun. StatePoint
Prom Price Tag: Rising Costs of the Big Dance past -- especially when it comes to cost. Going to the prom can put a fairly large dent in one’s wallet. In fact, the average family with a teenager spends nearly a thousand dollars on the dance, according to a recent prom spending survey by Visa. Take a look at the budget breakdown below.
By Desert Star Staff Prom is a time-honored tradition and a rite of passage for teens. Originally inspired by graduation celebrations and
debutante balls, prom today is now an extravagant, defining moment in a teenager’s life, and bears little resemblance to the promenades of the
By Desert Star Staff The face of marriage is changing and so are the ways couples are choosing to celebrate the occasion. For example, more couples who already have children are celebrating not just their union to each other, but their official union as a family, and the number of same sex married couples has doubled since 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. “The way people think about weddings has changed dramatically in the last decade, and we have to evolve with those changes,” says Nelson Tejeda, senior vice president and chief merchandising officer of Things Remembered, a leading retailer of personalized gifts.

While formal venues with regal place settings once ruled the day; a great portion of weddings now have a chic rustic feel. Cut Costs, Save for College The steep cost of prom night is leading teens to look at alternatives to traditional prom practices. One way high schoolers are saving is by ditching typical outfits and making their own. One creative example is Duck Tape
prom wear. The Duck brand Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest annually offers more than $50,000 in scholarship dollars to creative prom-goers who craft DIY prom fashions. Over the last 15 years, the contest has attracted more than 7,000 entrants seeking the top prize of $10,000 each in college scholarships. So, in addition to recouping your prom investment --- the scholarship can help offset the skyrocketing cost of college, which has increased by 40 percent in the last decade! For more information about the contest, visit www.stuckatprom.com. Carpooling with a big group, asking a family member to take pictures with a nice camera and creating DIY flowers (i.e. Duck Tape roses) are all ways to add a personal touch to prom, and they cost significantly less than the usual limos, professional photographers and flowers. Additionally, many couples are choosing to celebrate with a tighter knit group of friends and family in far-flung locations. “Destination weddings give couples an opportunity to spend more on each guest,” says Tejeda. “Rather than a typical wedding favor, guests may expect to receive hotel care packages with high-end toiletries and personalized gifts, like waffle weave robes or monogrammed cosmetic cases.” Building Your Home: With so many people living together before marriage, most couples already have the basics they need when it comes to entertaining and keeping the
house in order. Registries today are an opportunity to upgrade your current assortment of household goods. “Couples are crafting their own monograms. They incorporate them throughout their wedding, from their invitations to their websites and place settings. Then, after the wedding, they use them to personalize their home décor,” says Tejeda. “Monogrammed cutting boards, towels and wall art have become increasingly popular in recent years.” Craft Cocktails: Beyond the standard bar offerings, signature drinks set a tone for the reception and add a bit of personalized cheer. “Engraved glasses that include the cocktail recipe are becoming a popular wedding
keepsake that can be used on anniversaries and future parties, completing the couple’s home bar,” says Tejeda. Similarly, personalized wedding flutes by Lennox, Wedgwood and Waterford are lending toasts extra meaning while helping couples build their drinkware collection. For more inspiration on ways to personalize your wedding, visit ThingsRemembered. com/Weddings. Whether you’re engaged and planning your big day, or you have some weddings on your calendar this year and want to know what to expect, being familiar with contemporary trends can be helpful on everything from picking a gift to choosing décor. “The Promposal” Just as significant as the dance itself, the new “promposal” trend is an elaborate -- and often public -- way that teens ask someone to prom. Teens are spending about one third of their overall prom costs on it, totaling around $324, according to the Visa survey. What are some popular promposal tactics? Spelling “prom” with pepperonis on pizza, airplane banner flyovers, giant duct tape posters and the jumbotron at a sporting event are just a few ways teens are “popping the question.”
encouraged to wear their “Sunday best” -- implying that they wear a nice dress or suit that they already owned. Not so anymore. For girls, going to prom is all about the dress, and finding the perfect one at the right price is no easy task. In 2012, girls surveyed by Seventeen magazine said they planned to spend $231 on average for a dress, $45 on shoes, $23 on a handbag, $32 on jewelry and $118 on hair, nails and makeup combined. While guys typically spend less on prom clothing and accessories, they’re still shelling out heavy cash to arrive in style. Guys spent on average $127 for a tuxedo, $20 on a corsage for their dates, and $100 on other accessories, according to research from USA Today.

Gelsons comes to the (dog) rescue
Images provided by Loving All Animals/Janet McAfee By Pam Price Thanks to the quick thinking on the part of Loving All Animals based in Palm Desert, CA a Pet Adoption Weekend took place at the new Gelson’s Rancho Mirage on March 19th from 11 am to 2 pm. The well-choreographed event featuring seven wellgroomed dogs, such as Lexi and Riley seeking adoption attracted a nonstop crowd. Now that Loving All Animals is a ‘pet partner’ with Gelsons, this rescue event,
the first ever bringing Gelsons and Loving All Animals together was an overwhelming success with two adoptions within in the first hour. This popular pet event attracted a steady flow of prospective pet friendly parents as Loving All Animals volunteers answered questions about the seven adorable dogs seeking their “ forever” home. Visitors had plenty to peruse and take home. On display were copies of Desert Pet Companion, a local pet friendly publication
with tips on pet care and Loving All Animals array of pet support information. Gelsons’ Pet Gazette, Winter 2016 edition with a listing of shelters from Santa Barbara to Riverside County was one of many perks for visitors, along with Gelson’s logo red pot holders, shopping list tablets, pens, address books, heart shaped silver picture frames ( for your pets) and clever dispensers for plastic pet size potty bags. But the real treat for pet owners can be
found on aisle 4, dedicated to wholesome and healthy pet products. During the three hour ‘rescue event Gelson’s graciously furnished an assortment of freshly made sandwiches for the volunteer crew along with $5 and $10 discount coupon for Gelson’s shoppers. According to Geslon’s Pet Gazette “Gelson’s is proud to have found homes for more than 450 displaced dogs and cats .”Those interested in further information email, pets@gelsons.com. The device supports up to 19 LTE bands and also comes with iOS 9.3, Apple Pay, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, new microphones, Live Photos support, alwayson “Hey Siri” voice activation, and improved battery life. Apple Announces 9.7-Inch iPad Pro with Apple Pencil Support

12-megapixel iSight camera, 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera, faster wireless, and support for Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. It is the ultimate upgrade for existing iPad users and replacement for PC users.” Described by Apple’s marketing chief Phil Schiller as “the ultimate PC replacement,” the 9.7-inch iPad Pro uses the same display components as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro -- custom timing controller, photo alignment, and oxide TFT -- resulting in a display that’s 40 percent less reflective and 25 percent brighter than the display in the iPad Air 2. It also has a wider color gamut with 25 percent greater color saturation for more vivid colors. Like the 12.9inch iPad Pro, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro’s display includes support for the Apple Pencil. Unique to the 9.7inch iPad Pro is a True Tone display that uses four-channel ambient light
sensors to measure the color temperature of the ambient environment, changing the temperature of the tablet’s display to match. The feature goes hand-in-hand with Night Shift, the blue light reduction mode in iOS 9.3. Measuring in at 6.1mm, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro weighs less than a pound. Design wise, it looks like a smaller 12.9-inch iPad Pro, with four speakers for improved audio and a Smart Connector for use with accessories like the new Smart Keyboard. Inside, there’s an A9X chip that offers incredible performance and a long battery life, plus there’s support for 802.11ac WiFi With MIMO technology, faster LTE advanced, and the Apple SIM to connect to LTE networks while traveling. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro has an improved 12-megapixel camera, with Focus Pixels for faster focusing, a better image signal processor, advanced noise reduction, and better face detection. FILM Oscar & Box Office Gold on DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Stephen Louis Grush and Rebecca Pidgeon. Photo by Michael Lamont. Three films were in tight contention for the Best Picture Oscar this year: “The Revenant,” “ The Big Short” and “Spotlight” --and the Oscar went to “Spotlight” which is now available on DVD. The film also took home the golden statuette for Original Screenplay by Josh Singer and
Tom McCarthy and garnered the SAG award for ensemble acting. If you haven’t seen this fine motion picture yet, now is your chance to buy or rent it. When the first hint of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest first surfaced in Boston in 1976, only a slight mention appeared in The Boston Globe. After
that the issue went dormant until a doggedly determined lawyer, Mitch Garabedian (Stanley Tucci) once again tried to alert the public to the terrible sexual abuse that was still ongoing, unpunished. And unrecognized. No one wanted to challenge the Church hierarchy. While such behavior
was not condoned, the Church leadership was determined to keep the problem out of the public eye and the legal system, handling the situation by placing pedophile priests on sick leave or moving them to a different parish far from Boston where they could keep an eye on them in order to prevent further abuse and potential scandal. In 2001, Marty Barron (Liev Schreiber) became the first Jewish editor of The Boston Globe. When the abuse issue came to his attention, he assigned the “Spotlight” team of reporters to investigate the allegations. At first, the paper was reluctant to pursue the story, since Boston is predominantly a Catholic city and they didn’t want to alienate the majority of their readers. It was only after they began to conduct their investigation that they realized how widespread the scandal actually was. The Spotlight investigative team was headed by Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo
(nominated for Best Supporting Actor), Rachel McAdams (nominated for Best Supporting Actress) and John Slattery, who plays Ben Bradley, Jr. This film is a must see, but it will prove particularly enlightening for anyone planning to pursue a career in journalism. It is fascinating to see how the reporters worked together to uncover all the facts needed to bring this terrible abuse issue to the public. “Spotlight” bonus features: “Uncovering the Truth: A Spotlight Team Roundtable,” “ Spotlight: A Look Inside” and “The State of Journalism.” From Universal Studios, rated R. Attention “Star Wars” fans. I have great news for you. On April 1st “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD this is no April Fools joke--it’s absolutely true. Now you will be able to see the movie as often as you like and the DVD will be filled with added bonus materials.

Obama, Raul Castro speak after historic meeting in Cuba
Cuban President Raul Castro and US President Barack Obama spoke to the public after their first meeting on the island. The two leaders announced the signing of several agreements to increase cooperation and economic investment between their countries. The two countries have already signed agreements to re-establish postal traffic and commercial flights, Castro said, and signed two memoranda of understanding on environment and sea navigation. Talks are under way on agricultural cooperation, as well as jointly battling narcotics trade, infectious diseases such as Zika, and cancer. “Much more could be done if the US blockade were to be lifted,” Castro said, calling the Obama administration’s most recent measures “positive but insufficient.” Castro also repeated the long-standing Cuban request for the US to return the “territory illegally occupied by the Guantanamo naval base” before normal relations could be re-established. “There are profound differences between our countries that will not go away,” Castro said, adding that the US and Cuba should be able to coexist “in a civilized manner.” “This is a new day between our two countries,” said Obama in English and Spanish, thanking his Cuban hosts for their hospitality. He also thanked
Pope Francis for helping mediate the thaw between the US and Cuba. “We have half a century of work to catch up on,” Obama said. “Cuba’s destiny will not be decided by the US or any other nation. The future of Cuba will be decided by Cubans, not by anybody else.” Obstacles have been removed for US commercial flights and cruise ships visiting the island, and the use of US dollars in Cuba, Obama said. The US is also opening grants and scholarships to Cuban students, and offering English-language training to teachers. “Fortunately, we don’t have to swim with sharks to achieve the goals that you and I have set forth,” Obama said, referencing Castro’s earlier remark of a US swimmer who made the crossing without a shark cage. Cuba has been invited to the regional energy summit this summer in Washington.

It was a day to honor one of the valley’s most inspirational human rights activist. “He worked for equality his whole life and dedicated his life to making other people’s lives,” Chris, George Zander’s husband said. The next US-Cuban human rights dialogue will be in Havana, later this year. “We are moving forward and not looking backwards,” Obama said in response to a question about political differences with Havana. “We don’t view Cuba as a threat to the United States.” “I personally would not disagree” with Castro’s argument that education, healthcare and security in old age are also human rights, Obama added. Castro deflected a question about his preference for Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. “I cannot vote in the United States,” he said, to chuckles from the press corps. His demeanor hardened when he addressed a US journalist’s query about political prisoners in Cuba. “Give me a list of political

prisoners, or even just a name,” Castro said, “and they will be released by the evening.” Congress would have to repeal the law putting the embargo in place, Obama explained in response to a Cuban journalist. “The list of thinks that we can do administratively is growing shorter, and the bulk of changes that need to be made in respect to the embargo will now depend on Congress,” he said. “The embargo is going to end,” Obama said, but would not give a timeline, noting that it will depend on many factors. Obama added that the speed with which Congress would act to remove the blockade directly depended on Cuban “progress” on human rights. “We can’t force change on any particular country. from within,” he said. “Human rights issues should not be politicized,” Castro said, adding that Cuba complies with 47 out of 61 international human rights instruments, and no country complies with them all. In Cuba, healthcare and education are considered human rights, as well as equal pay for equal work to men and women, he said. Obama arrived in Havana on Sunday, in the first visit to Cuba by a sitting US president in 88 years. “I’ve come to Havana to extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people. I’m here to bury the last vestige of the Cold War in the Americas and to forge a new era of understanding to help improve the daily lives of the Cuban people,” Obama said in a statement earlier on Monday.
Family Health & Safety Festival

This event was held at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park on Saturday. The purpose of the event was to bring awareness to the community about preventable injuries within the home and on the road. This was a free event to encourage families to utilize the services and organizations within our community. Activities included face painting, bicycle rodeos, demonstrations by the Palm
Desert Police K-9, Red Dragon Karate and Gymnastics by the Desert Recreational District. Parents were even encouraged to bring their kid’s bicycles’ out so that they could participate in the bicycle rodeo. Over 20 different organizations participated in the festivities. Hints for Tackling Tough Household Chores
By Desert Star Staff A long to-do list can seem daunting. But it doesn’t have to. A few strategies can help you be more productive and get tough household chores tackled in record time. Organize As You Go: The longer you leave certain organizational chores to build up, the more overwhelming they can be to complete. A few key organizational systems can help you stay on top of things. For example, try getting yourself in the habit of sorting mail as soon as you walk through the door. It’s satisfying to check off an item on your to-do list and this is low hanging fruit. Streamline mail received by signing up for paperless electronic banking and removing your name from unwanted mailing lists. Reduce clutter by spending just five minutes each evening before bed putting things back where they belong. A shoe rack by the foyer, a big bin for kids’ toys -- simple solutions such as these can help you
consolidate mess and make the entire home feel cleaner. Simplify Laundry: Did you know that different stains require different cleaning agents? For example, milk and grass stains require enzyme cleaners, while ink or wine stains require peroxides. Of course, clothes need brighteners and detergents to come out looking their best. Many laundry boosters don’t contain all of these stain fighters. You can save time -- and extend the life of your clothes -- by choosing a cleaner that can tackle multiple types of stains. For example, Biz has more stain fighters than other brands, while also brightening clothes. Stained clothing should be pre-treated with a tough, multifaceted solution. Rub in pretreatment gently and wait three to five minutes. Don’t allow it to dry on the fabric. While it’s working its magic, multitask -- fold laundry, iron a garment or complete another simple chore. If a garment needs
a longer treatment, add the solution to water and soak it in a bucket. Then wash as usual. Use a stain fighter as an additive in loads of laundry to brighten garments and take care of tougher stains. Independent, third party tests prove that Biz works 80 percent better than detergent alone. More stainfighting tips can be found at bizstainfighter.com. Cooking and Clean-Up: It’s takeout time...again. If you’re ordering that pizza pie for the third time this week, consider why. Is it because the thought of cooking and cleaning sounds too tiring at the end of a long day? Save energy by preparing one large meal at the beginning of the week that can be eaten as leftovers for a few days. Soups and stews age well as the spices really infuse the dish. Also, you can get creative. For example, if you roast a chicken on day one, shred it and use it in tacos on day two and in a chicken salad on day three.
A watched pot never boils. So while the pasta cooks or the cake bakes, use the time wisely. Unload the dishwasher to make way for new items.
Set the table. Answer an email. Don’t let chores get you down. Apply time-saving strategies to make these necessary tasks a cinch.

MUSIC Music aplenty courtesy of new album and DVD titles BY ROBERT KINSLER
Majestic returns from modern-day guitar hero Joe Bonamassa and Southern hard rocker 3 Doors Down, as well as the release of a wonderful tribute to George Harrison and enthralling documentary about ‘80s hard rock hit makers Twisted Sister are among a parade of fantastic new releases available. Also worth discovering is an unreleased collection of outstanding recordings from the late Jeff Healey and the debut album from powerpop trio Yorktown Lads.
Artists: Brian Wilson, Cold War Kids, Dhani Harrison, Norah Jones, Ben Harper, more Title: George Fest: A Night to Celebrate the Music of George Harrison (Universal Music) You might like if you enjoy: Ann Wilson, Ian Astbury, Brian Wilson, George Harrison Tell me more: On Sept. 28, 2014, a diverse and potent line-up of musicians gathered at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles for “George Fest,” a night to celebrate the music of George Harrison. Now that once-in-a-lifetime concert event is available as a deluxe edition with the complete audio recording featured on two audio CDs and the concert film itself on a DVD. Many of the performances are faithful to Harrison’s iconic recordings, including a stunning “I Me Mine” (featuring Brett Daniel of Spoon), “I Got My Mind Set On You” (with the Killers’ Brandon Flowers on lead vocals) and a shining take on the Traveling Wilburys gem “Handle With Care” that features Flowers, Daniel, Dhani Harrison, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Jonathan Bates. Elsewhere, the arrangements likewise honor the original Harrison tracks but with enough variation to keep it interesting (Heartless Bastards’ Americana-styled “If Not For You,” Jamestown Revival’s folk-rock take of “If I Needed Someone” and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s brooding “Art of Dying”). Tell me more: Fans who caught Andrew Horn’s “We Are Twisted F***ing Sister!” when it was shown in movie theaters in February 2016 can now add the documentary film to their personal collection. Despite that, it appeared as if the New York quintet’s appearance on rock radio (with the 1984 singles “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock”) was a overnight success story, Twisted Sister spent years without a record deal. Interviews with the band members, management, fans and archival footage provide a compelling tale of a band that persevered despite all odds and the film takes a universal approach in examining what it takes for an ensemble to find success via a long journey from bars and dives to the big time. Available on DVD, Bluray and digital formats, “We Are Twisted F***ing Sister!” is one of the more interesting music documentaries in memory. Country Communion. It speaks volumes about Bonamassa’s gifts that “Blues of Desperation” has the sound and firepower of a hungry bluesman’s debut. The 11 original songs tap into British, Chicago and Southern blues traditions, with Bonamassa having worked with other songwriters and recorded in Nashville to push his talents in new directions. The fiery and virtuoso guitar work thankfully remains intact (notably on an extended lead in “No Good Place for the Lonely”), but there are forays that provide evidence that Bonamassa remains a hungry artist interested in exploring new territory. The glorious English-meets-Southern-fried title track, breezy country blues of “The Valley Runs Low” (with his voice positioned against a trio of female vocalists) and uptempo Chicago blues burner “You Left Me Nothin’ but the Bill and the Blues” are among this writer’s faves. NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: CHLOE MAXWELL AKA CHLOE W. MAXWELL CASE NO. INP1600127 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the WILL or estate, or both of CHLOE MAXWELL AKA CHLOE W. MAXWELL. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by SHERRY MARIE DUPONT in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that SHERRY MARIE DUPONT be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent’s WILL and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The WILL and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act . (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: 04/07/16 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46-200 OASIS STREET, INDIO, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: DARLYNN MORGAN, ESQ. more likely to have a stroke. “All types of patients of all ages should monitor heart rate and blood pressure regularly, and seek medical help when they don’t feel well. Even short bursts of palpitations may be the beginning of persistent or chronic AF,” says Dr. Leo Polosajian, an electrophysiologist and founder of Cardiac Rhythm Specialists in Reseda, CA. Unfortunately, many AF patients don’t experience symptoms until an event happens. “While biking my normal route, my heart rate rose and I couldn’t breathe. I pretty much went into sudden cardiac death,” says Todd Smiland, a patient of Polosajian’s. “Luckily the ambulance made it to me in seven minutes and they were able to defibrillate me back to life, essentially. That pretty much started all of my heart issues.” By correcting abnormal conduction fibers in the heart through ablation, its electrical system may be repaired and the heart
may return to a normal rhythm. One of the newest innovations uses contact force ablation technology, which gives physicians a real-time, objective measure of force applied to the heart during the procedure. “I felt this patient was an ideal candidate for an ablation procedure instead of medication, which only treats symptoms. When patients don’t respond to medication or it’s not an optimal therapy option, I turn to radiofrequency ablation,” says Polosajian. “It was like night and day,” says Smiland, who after receiving ablation treatment, resumed activities he previously enjoyed. According to Polosajian, Smiland’s experience may not represent those of all patients, but a recent FDA review found ablation had at least a 47 percent greater success rate than medication. “This patient’s experience is what all physicians hope to achieve,” says Polosajian. It’s important to note there are risks and potential adverse
events associated with ablation procedures, including but not limited to cardiovascular related complications, such as hematoma, effusion and infection. Contact force ablation may not be appropriate for patients who have had certain recent heart surgeries, prosthetic valves, active systemic infection or have undergone other major vascular procedures. Patients
should consult with their physicians about options. A checklist of questions to ask your doctor can be found at www.sjm.com/ AfibAnswers, a site provided by St. Jude Medical, a leader in technologies that treat atrial fibrillation. Know the signs and symptoms of AF and talk to your doctor, if you suspect anything is amiss. StatePoint
Dan Lawson, costume designer for “The Good Wife” on CBS, offers the following tips to look put-together wherever you go, no matter what your budget is. • Remember that wellfitted clothes can make or break an outfit. Set aside some money for alterations to get the proper fit and look your best in any particular garment. • Be willing to invest money in “workhorse pieces,” those items you can wear for a long time that will be instrumental to each look. Staples for women include skirts, trousers and a good pair of shoes. For men, a well-fitted suit, a good dress shirt, shoes and a nice bag or briefcase. “Having a few key staples will give you the foundation for dozens of different outfits, as long as you take good care of these workhorse
pieces and keep them in good condition,” says Lawson, whose work in costume design and wardrobe has garnered him Emmy nominations and theater awards. • Set aside a portion of your wardrobe budget on trendy items that may not last forever, but will make your outfits pop while the items are in style. When mixed and matched with your longer-lasting garments, you can create a new and fresh wardrobe. • Once you’ve taken the time to pull together all these items and have created a wardrobe that you love and just can’t live without, it’s important to extend the life of these clothes. You can affordably prevent fading, shrinking and stretching with an athome dry cleaning product.
Lawson uses Dryel onset to refresh clothing quickly. It’s an at-home kit that comes with special cloths, similar to dryer sheets, with special cleansers infused in them that steam clean your clothes in your dryer. The kit includes a protection bag and a spot cleaning booster spray, and requires only 15 minutes in the dryer or 30 minutes for a deeper clean -- and is a great time- and money-saving alternative to taking clothing to the dry cleaners, costing only 25 cents per item. More wardrobe maintenance tips can be found at www.Dryel.com. With some smart strategies, you can look chic, sleek and sophisticated every day of the week -- at home or at play -- without spending a fortune. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff Are you experiencing heart palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue and discomfort around your heart? You could be experiencing atrial fibrillation (AF or AFib), the most common heart rhythm disorder. Recognizing signs and symptoms is essential to early diagnosis and effective treatment. Affecting about three million Americans, AF is a rapid heartbeat, which can lead to poor blood flow and increased risk of serious conditions, including stroke and heart failure. AF is the result of abnormal electrical impulses, which travel chaotically throughout the upper chambers of the heart, causing the atria to contract so quickly the heart loses its ability to pump efficiently. This may cause blood to pool in the heart, where it can clot. If a clot travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke. A recent study by researchers from Boston University found that people with AF are nearly five times

El Centro Sector Border Patrol Arrests Convicted Sex Offender
By Desert Star Staff SEELEY, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Station arrested a previously deported registered sex offender near Mount Signal on Sunday. At approximately 8:40 a.m., agents observed a man walking north from the International Border fence near Mount Signal Road. Upon making contact with the man, agents determined
that he was illegally present in the United States. Records checks revealed the man, a 35-year-old citizen of El Salvador, was convicted of sexual abuse of a minor in the state of Texas, and subsequently removed from the United States in 2009. “This arrest is a testament to the vital role that the men and women of the El Centro Sector play in safeguarding our nations borders,” said
Michael B. Sullivan, Patrol Agent in Charge of the El Centro Border Patrol Station. The man will be criminally prosecuted for Re-Entry After Removal as a convicted sex offender and is being held at the Imperial County Jail. In fiscal year 2016, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents have arrested eight convicted sex offenders attempting to re-enter the United States after removal.
The El Centro Sector’s Community Awareness Campaign is a simple and effective program to raise public awareness on the indicators of crime and other threats. We encourage public and private sector employees to remain vigilant and play a key role in keeping our country safe. Please report any suspicious activity to the Border Community Threat Hotline at 1-800-901-2003.
Possible suspects behind Brussels Airport blasts
A picture released on March 22, 2016 by the Belgian federal police on demand of the Federal prosecutor shows a screengrab of the airport CCTV camera showing suspects of this morning’s attacks at Brussels Airport, in Zaventem © BFP / AFP By Desert Star Staff It shows two men with black hair, one of them definitely bearded, wearing black jumpers. Both of them can be seen pushing airport baggage trolleys, and both have one hand gloved – possibly hiding a trigger for a bomb, DH.be reported. The two “seem to have committed suicide attacks,” Belgium’s Federal Prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw, later
said at a news conference. The third man in the image is wearing a hat. Police have issued a wanted notice for him, with the authorities saying the man captured by CCTV at the airport is suspected of involvement in the attacks. The third suspect was seen running away from the airport building, Reuters cited a government official as saying. Earlier, citing police sources, Belgian newspaper

Two blasts went off in the departure hall of Brussels’ Zaventem Airport at around 8am local time, with at least one of them being a suicide bombing, according to Belgium’s federal prosecutor. Another bomb detonated at the airport might have been a suitcase bomb, a US official told AP on condition of anonymity. At least one of the bombs used at the airport contained nails, Belgian media reported, citing a hospital source. At least 14 people were killed at Zaventem, and nearly 100 reportedly injured. Delightful Disney movie transfers to Theatre 29 stage
By Jack Lyons One of the nice things about Theatre 29 in Twentynine Palms, is they are still true to their mission statement published some 17 years ago when the theatre opened. In part, it reads “We are a non-profit community theatre which has been providing quality entertainment since our founding in 1999. We are dedicated to bringing quality, family-oriented theatre to Twentynine Palms while offering opportunities for our children and citizens to experience the live arts.” They enjoy the support of the City, the surrounding communities, and the gratitude of its many performers, young and old, who have ‘trod the boards’ learning skills they didn’t know they had, and had a great time in the process. The Arts are a wonderful way to expand one’s horizons, open up the world for young and old alike and make friendships that last a lifetime. I was made keenly aware, once again, of the power to transform through the arts when I attended a performance of the theatre’s current production “Disney’s The Little Mermaid”, last week. It’s become somewhat of a tradition that theatre co-founder and President Gary Daigneault and Music Director Ed Will produce the annual musical blockbuster production. “The Little Mermaid” is a beloved children’s fairytale originally from the pen of Hans Christian Andersen, which has gone through multiple iterations over the years. The Theatre 29 version has Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a libretto by Doug Wright (all Broadway Tony-winning heavyweights) and it features a cast of 27 performers. When dealing with children’s theatre the story usually isn’t very complicated. It’s usually a prince seeking romance and looking for just that right girl to share his life where they all live happily ever-after. However, that might be a little more difficult
to accomplish in this story because human Prince Eric (Graham Cooley) falls in love with siren-voiced sea mermaid Ariel (a lovely Chalise Kunz. Father’s are usually overly protective of their daughters, and King of the Sea, King Triton (a booming Charles Harvey) is no exception. He fears that some human will steal Ariel, the youngest of his eight daughters. It’s the same with Prince Eric’s father. The King assigns Grimsby (Ron Bottorff) to keep an eye on Prince Eric to make sure he finds the right and proper young lady to become his Princess. Triton’s wife has passed and he and his now banished wicked sister Aunt Ursula (a deliciously wicked Robin Wilson) rule different parts of their underwater kingdoms. King Triton has lots of courtiers and servants to help him run his watery empire including Sabastian (Char Childs) the clever crab and advisor to Triton who is charged with keeping Ariel safe. The story follows the usual twists and turns of good winning out over the bad. But not before the principal performers and the cast have a chance to sing their songs – there are twenty-eight musical numbers - and dance their dances choreographed by Mandi Pushkar which by the way, are energetically performed. With a cast of 27 performers who play humans and sea creatures, there isn’t enough room to mention everyone but the following supporting performers contributed in making the show lively and entertaining for the audience: Cindy Daigneault, Patti Brown, Chris Fleischman, and Amanda Winters along with a dedicated cast of teenagers and youngsters. The young, maybe about 11 years-old, girl sitting next me the night I attended, was so fully engaged and enthralled throughout the entire show that when Prince Eric and Ariel, now made human, finally kiss near the end of the show, she leaned forward in her seat as if she was Ariel. Such is power of the theatre to engage and entertain, to say nothing of

creating future audiences. Also, there were plenty of proud moms and dads, including grandparents in the audience, all with their faces glued to the stage throughout the show. One might almost imagine they were attending church services; they were that involved. “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” is one of the most ambitious productions Theatre 29 has tackled. And they have succeeded admirably.
