88th Annual Academy Awards (L-R) Best Supporting Actor Mark Rylance, Best Actress Brie Larson, Best Actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Supporting Actress Alicia Vikander By: Theda Kleinhans Reichman Sunday, February 28th, marked the 88th Academy Awards presentation, but unfortunately, a great deal of controversy was generated prior to the telecast. There was even the threat of a possible boycott because no actors of color were nominated this year, or last. Fortunately, the show went on as planned and Chris Rock spoke about “the whiteout” with wit, flair

and fairness in his opening monolog. He teased that he could have turned down the gig as MC in protest, but then the job would have gone to comic Kevin Hart who, according to Rock, makes “about a movie a week.” He then pointed out that it’s great to get a golden statuette, but what really matters in the long run is getting work within the industry. And even though the acting nominees this year were all

By Carlos Herrera COACHELLA VALLEY –CA. -Local leaders met Monday night to discuss the future of the one hundredmillion-dollar proposed CV Link. The project will be a bike, pedestrian and low speed electric vehicle path that would stretch across valley cities. After Monday’s executive meeting, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments decided the city of Rancho Mirage will not be part of the project. This comes after

Rancho Mirage Mayor Dana Hobart completely opposed it since the beginning. “we will not allow it to go down and disturb our business communities,” Mayor Hobart said after the meeting. Leaders in support of the project agreed to support a motion by Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit to exclude the city from any CV Link plans. According to Benoit, the disagreements all began because of a

white, the televised ceremony was filled with an abundance of black performers-- a very funny, talented host, Chris Rock, the orchestra leader and actors in the comedy sketches like Whoopie Goldberg, a past Oscar winner and host. It should also be duly noted that the major award of the night went to Mexican director Alejandro G. Inarritu for “The Revenant.” Inarritu won an Oscar last year as well for

“Birdman,” so this was a major achievement in his career since back-to-back directorial Oscars have only been awarded twice before in Oscar history. While many felt the socalled Oscar “whiteout” was a snub to people of color, I thought about the quintessential movie star of yesteryear, Cary Grant. Not only was he one of the most talented actors in the history of cinema, he was charismatic,

witty and the epitome of charm and elegance. And yet, he never won an Oscar. It was only toward the end of his life that he was given an honorary Oscar for his contribution to the world of film. Despite this oversight by the Academy, Cary Grant was, and always will be, unforgettable. Now back to this year’s Oscar ceremony. As always, Continues on Page 11

Investing Ideas in our Complex Financial Markets

By Janice Gough If there’s one overriding outlook for the financial markets in 2016 it’s this: No big gains are expected. Weakness in the energy sector, low interest rates, high “price-toearnings ratios” on the overall stock market and changes in the U.S. monetary policy, investors and advisors need to choose carefully this year, then monitor investments closely. Here are some of the best investment ideas for the coming year. In the U.S. stock market, large-cap stocks with strong balance sheets, a high level

of U.S. sales and rising profit margins may have the greatest returns. Consider reviewing the top 100 large cap stocks with good dividends over the S&P 500. Technology will prove resilient in the face of rate hikes once again, supported by earnings potential, and increased spending on technology by companies trying to remain competitive in their own markets. Follow daily alerts at http:// siliconvalley/crains.com to receive daily reports on technology companies. Biotech, which straddles the tech and health care sectors, is another favorite among strategists for 2016. S&P Capital IQ expects a 21% increase in earnings for the biotech industry, which is currently trading at 14 times 2016 forward earnings. Now is an opportune time to buy a home, especially for those who want to lock in what will likely be the lowest rate on a fixed-rate mortgage for years to come. Those rates haven’t increased yet, but they eventually will. The Fed’s new rate-rising regime will initially boost only short-term rates, affecting just variable rate mortgages, but eventually rates will reset on long-term fixed rate mortgages. The 30-year fixed rate mortgage prices off of the 10-year Treasury note. CoreLogic, a global real estate information and data analysis company, forecasts a 0.50% increase in the average 30-year

fixed rate mortgage to 4.5% by the end of 2016. Knowing that rates will rise will help push people off of that straddling position. At least early on that could be constructive for homebuilding stocks. The last time the Fed embarked on a new, tighter rate regime, in 2004, homebuilding stocks rallied 33%, followed by 25% gain the following year. Goldman Sachs strategists in the firm’s 2016 Global Opportunity Asset Locator (GOAL) report, “We think this divergence in monetary policy will be broadly a tailwind to European and Japanese assets, while acting as a headwind to U.S. (and potential U.K.)”. Goldman Sachs favors Japanese and European Stocks over U.S. Equities... Europe because of resilient growth, accommodative policy

and a weaker euro, and Japan because of margin expansion and top-line growth could drive strong earnings growth and double-digit returns. Using similar U.S. monetary policies (quantitative easing and near zero interest rates to boost economic growth), Europe and Japan hopes to buoy stock prices. That divergence could potentially widen if the Fed raises rates in 2016, while the European Central Bank and Bank of Japan stick with zero to negative rates and asset purchase programs. The divergence in central bank policies will continue to play out in the currency markets, where the U.S. dollar is expected to remain strong relative to other currencies, though possibly not as strong as it has been. The interest rate associated with the

foreign asset must be lower than the interest rate of an investor’s home country, which is the case now for U.S. investors purchasing European or Japanese stocks or bonds. Investors should take currency risk seriously, as returns could be eroded by dollar appreciation. Many market strategists expect market volatility will rise in 2016, which, as always, poses a challenge for investors.

since the last update, or there are issues which otherwise were not anticipated during the last update, a member vote will be necessary. The board cannot adopt CC&R amendments (except to remove developer marketing provisions per Civil 4230, delete illegal restrictive covenants per Civil 4225, or update old statute numbers to the current numbers per Civil 4235). Because rules must give way to the CC&Rs under Civil 4205, the board may not adopt rules conflicting with the CC&Rs. The legal fee expense to update CC&Rs can be daunting for smaller associations because the cost is spread among fewer members. However, the cost to draft many spot amendments can occasionally exceed the cost of hiring a lawyer on a fixed fee for completely new documents. Thanks, Kelly

to those CC&R’s that we feel they need to be updated as it is very confusing. Board members have verbally discouraged new homeowners from pursuing CC&R updating or change saying it would be too difficult as the community always has extremely low voter turnout for elections, let alone getting community support to update CC&R’s. Do you have any suggestions for our dilemma of how to go about getting CC&Rs updated in an HOA community? Thank You, C.S., Riverside.

the time to read the proposed documents, and so do not vote, figuring that this is simply abstaining. However, since the amendment usually requires a specific fraction of the entire membership, the failure to vote is the same as a “no” vote. Civil Code 4275 allows associations to seek court help to adopt CC&R amendments which are supported by more than 50% of the members. Corporations Code 7515 allows an association to seek court help if the required percentage to amend the bylaws was not met. However, the best approach is to organize help to get out the vote. HOA Homefront – Amending CC&Rs By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

Hello Kelly, We live in a small condominium complex in Brawley, Ca. Our CC&R’s were last updated 15 years ago. At the time they were considered “boilerplate” but a lot has changed since then. Would it be possible to bring them up to date by the board adopting amendments or rules, or should they be completely rewritten? Our reserve fund is in pretty good shape, but we are getting ready to spend a large portion of it on needed maintenance items and a complete rewrite may be out of the question financially. Thanks, K.W., Brawley Dear K.W.: If the covenants were updated 15 years ago, hopefully they already are customized to the community’s needs and mostly are still OK. If changes are desired to update the document conform to the many changes in the law

Dear Kelly: My husband and I recently purchased a new home in an established neighborhood with an HOA. The CC&R’s say one thing but so many exceptions have been made March 2, 2016

Dear C.S.: The larger the community, the harder it can be to amend CC&Rs and bylaws, because the difficulty is usually not conflict, but apathy. In larger communities, homeowners often feel less responsible to each other, and it can take a great deal of effort to turn out the vote. Because CC&R and bylaw amendments are hard enough to pass, boards should avoid proposing anything which will be controversial among the members. Many members do not take

Business lessons drawn from riots, robberies and mob threats By Desert Star Staff Business can lead to cutthroat competition – in more ways than one – but Tom Nix learned that the darkest moments also can lead to the greatest triumphs. “It’s the worst experiences that sometimes teach us the most important lessons,” says Nix, a successful businessman and author of “Nixland: My Wild Ride in the Inner City Check Cashing Industry” (nixland.net). The incredible rise of his multimillion-dollar enterprise, Nix Check Cashing, is a case in point. Nix encountered turbulent times in the inner city of Los Angeles as he built his company into a

trusted institution among underserved communities. He and his employees faced harrowing experiences, such as armed robberies and threats from the mob, which hoped to block some of his expansion plans. The 1992 riots that erupted after a jury acquitted police officers in the beating of Rodney King proved especially distressing. Many businesses were looted or burned to the ground, and Nix scrambled to protect his check-cashing locations. He was gratified to learn that loyal customers prevented some branches from being torched. “We even had a gang

member call us,” Nix says. “He said he had always been treated with respect at Nix, and his gang decided not to burn Nix because we were part of the community.” Nix says his experiences taught him valuable lessons that relate both to business and life, such as: • Take responsibility. This applies to everything that happens, including things you can’t control. Once when an economic downturn left him unable to pay bills, Nix contacted each creditor to explain his predicament and work out a plan. That upfront approach helped the business avoid bankruptcy. • Never play the victim

role or blame game. Avoid replaying misfortunes over and over in your mind. Accept setbacks gracefully and concentrate on getting back on track. In the 1990s, a business deal that went awry nearly forced Nix to sell his company, but he focused on solving the problem and persevered. • Be courageous. The most debilitating human emotion is fear. Learn to keep it in perspective, minimize it when applicable and harness it to your benefit when need be. Nix says standing up to bullies as a child set the stage for standing up to the mob. • Maintain integrity. Operating with fair play and

compassion is important in building trust. “The way community members protected some of our branches during the riots was a reflection of this,” Nix says. “Treating people fairly and supporting community programs paid off.” Good times may be more enjoyable, but challenging times provide more opportunity for growth, he says. “Realize that bad people, tough times and mistakes are your teachers,” Nix says. “Always ask yourself, ‘What do I need to do to capitalize on these events?’ ”

By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO - The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit with the state Supreme Court in San Francisco Monday with farreaching consequences for the 255 people sentenced to die in prison for crimes committed as juveniles. The suit seeks a resentencing hearing for Leif Taylor, who has served 23 years for fatally shooting a man in a robbery when Taylor was 16. The case also asks the panel to direct the lower courts to appoint an attorney for people with similar cases. Michael Risher, senior staff attorney on the case for the ACLU of Northern

California, would like to see young defendants get a chance at 25-to-life, instead of life without parole. “If someone presents a petition that says, ‘I was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, for a crime committed when I was a juvenile,’ the court should appoint counsel to take a close look at that, and argue that the person is entitled to re-sentencing,” says Risher. The U.S. Supreme Court recently made retroactive a 2012 ruling that banned mandatory life sentences without parole for juveniles meaning the people can now apply to be re-sentenced or granted parole. But Risher says most

of the petitioners aren’t capable of making their own case, and need a court-appointed attorney. “They are, in many cases, dismissing these petitions without appointing counsel, and doing that improperly,” he says. According to a Human Rights Watch report, California has the highest number of people serving life-withoutparole sentences for crimes committed as children. The same report says African Americans are sentenced to life without parole at a rate 18 times higher, and Latinos at a rate fivetimes higher, than whites.

KKK leader & Le Pen endorse Trump amid Mussolini scandal By Desert Star Staff Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump received endorsements from two high-profile “racists” – French right-wing politician Jean-Marie Le Pen and former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke. Le Pen, who has been convicted of contesting crimes against humanity, wrote in a tweet on Saturday: “If I were American, I would vote Donald Trump… But may God protect him!” Le Pen’s backing of Trump came the same week former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke backed the billionaire candidate. Speaking on his radio show last week and in a post on his Facebook page, Duke said that “voting against Donald Trump at this point is really treason to your heritage.” In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Trump refused to condemn Duke’s support, instead stating that he didn’t

“know anything about David Duke” and “nothing about white supremacists”. When pressed again over the KKK’s support for Trump, the Republican said he would have to “research” the groups before he could disavow anyone. “If you would send me a list of groups, I will do research on them and certainly I would disavow if I thought there was something wrong,” Trump said. “You may have groups in there that are totally fine. It would be very unfair. So give me a list of groups and I’ll let you know.” Following the backlash to his dodging of the condemnation on CNN, Trump tweeted a clip from a press conference on Friday in which he was also questioned about Duke’s support. “I didn’t even know he endorsed me. David Duke endorsed me? OK, all right – I disavow,” he said. In 2000, Trump also told the New York

Donald Trump, Jean-Marie Le Pen,David Duke © Jim Young, Christian Hartmann, Gustau Nacarino / Reuters Times that Duke was “not company I wish to keep”, when questioned about his involvement with the Reform Party. Duke, who was a member of the Louisiana state legislature from 1989 to 1992, has much in common with his French counterpart Le Pen. They have both faced criticism for their comments and skepticism about the Nazi Holocaust during World War II, and in Le Pen’s case, he was convicted in 2012 for his remarks, receiving March 2, 2016

a €10,000 fine and threemonth suspended sentence. In 2014, when discussing the refugee crisis Europe, Le Pen told journalists that “Ebola could sort out” the “migratory invasion” in three months. On Monday, Trump claimed the reason he didn’t distance himself from the KKK’s support during his interview was because he had been given a “very bad earpiece” and that he couldn’t hear anchor Jake Tapper clearly.

“I’m sitting in a house in Florida, with a very bad earpiece that they gave me, and you could hardly hear what he was saying,” he told NBC’s Today program. “What I heard was ‘various groups.’ And I don’t mind disavowing anybody and I disavowed David Duke.” Trump is also defending himself for his retweet of a quote from Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on Sunday, which read: “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.” www.desertstarweekly.com

It is such a sturdy foundation on which this grungy patina of time and weather is created. I particularly like the look of faded, worn and layered paint, slowly removed by man and Mother Nature. This is the inspiration for my metal series. As a child, I collected old, usually rusty, metal objects. I still pick up things during my dog walks in the desert near my home. I like to transform this influence into colorful fun metal art pieces. Sometimes I think it would

Mandy Main Mid Century Modern Paintings This series of Mid Century architecture combines both tradition and modernism.

My artistic style is rooted in art history and landscape painting, so when I approach our iconic architecture it is with an eye towards interpreting a contemporary subject with old world techniques. The paintings are rendered in oils on canvas or wood panels using a subdued palette of warm colors, applied in layers to achieve a luminous effect. I like to focus on a detail of the building that incorporates dramatic lighting and composition. As a nod to my landscape background, I contrast the hard-edged intricate geometric shapes of the buildings with the organic forms of rugged hillsides in

the background or the flowing movement of palm trees. I work on several paintings at a time, executed in my studio where I paint in silence and total concentration. Before I begin a painting I envision where it will ultimately take me. The paintings are with me constantly; I even work on them while I am sleeping. I am continually coming up with ideas of what I want to say about nature and the world and I never want to stop painting, I have to keep expressing these ideas. In this way, the paintings are a spiritual outpouring. A part of my inner being is woven into every painting I create.

This gives me far more options with colors and shapes. Some of my metal pieces are quite distressed. I use bumps and folds (which are actually three folds in one) as areas for sanding and revealing paint layers and metal. In other pieces, I have applied and removed black paint to represent aging. Average cost of prescription drugs doubled in 7 years – AARP By Desert Star Staff The cost of a year’s worth of prescription drugs, on average, doubled from 2006 to 2013, according to a new report by AARP. The price hikes are hitting senior citizens the hardest because Social Security benefits aren’t keeping up. The average annual cost of prescription drugs widely used by the elderly increased from $5,571 in 2006 to $11,341 in 2013, according to the latest study on drug price trends conducted by AARP, a powerful lobbying group for older Americans. That accounts for about three-quarters of average Social Security payments, and 48 percent of the median income of people who receive Medicare benefits, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. AARP says that the price surge stems from price hikes on generic drugs, which are

usually more affordable than their brand-name counterparts, as well as shortages that arose from production falling short of demand. In some cases, the research shows, price hikes are a result of big companies buying the rights to generic drugs and then selling them for increased prices. “Our concern with the prices we’re seeing is that the overall trend is really accelerating,” said Leigh Purvis, director of health services research in AARP’s Public Policy Institute, according to AP. While the average retail price drug has had its price increasing at a worrying pace of 10 percent a year, about 20 drugs have astoundingly had their prices quadruple since just December. Sixty drugs doubled over the same period. Turing Pharmaceuticals, headed by Martin Shkreli, is

one of the most pronounced examples of this kind of behavior. The company bought a lifesaving cancer medication only to increase its price from $13.50 to $750 per pill. The people most hurt by price increase, AARP says, are retirees who are living on a fixed

income. Particularly at risk are people who rely on medication to manage their chronic health problems and those who don’t have insurance, forcing them to pay for the drugs out of pocket. Rising prescription drug prices is a hot-button issue for the 2016 presidential

race. Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of Americans support some form of price control on manufacturers, and candidates from both parties have spoken about their ideas for fighting high prices.

country, NASA’s Commercial Supersonic Technology Project asked industry teams to submit design concepts for a piloted test aircraft that can fly at supersonic speeds, creating a supersonic “heartbeat” -- a soft thump rather than the disruptive boom currently associated with supersonic flight. “Developing, building and flight testing a quiet supersonic X-plane is the next logical step in our path to enabling the industry’s decision to open supersonic travel for the flying public,” said Jaiwon Shin, associate administrator for NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission. Lockheed Martin will receive about $20 million over 17 months for QueSST preliminary design work. The Lockheed Martin team includes subcontractors GE Aviation of Cincinnati and Tri Models Inc. of Huntington Beach, California. The company will develop baseline aircraft requirements and a preliminary aircraft design, with specifications, and provide supporting documentation for concept formulation and planning. This documentation would be used to prepare for the detailed design, building and testing of

the QueSST jet. Performance of this preliminary design also must undergo analytical and wind tunnel validation. In addition to design and building, this Low Boom Flight Demonstration (LBFD) phase of the project also will include validation of community response to the new, quieter supersonic design. The detailed design and building of the QueSST aircraft, conducted under the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate’s Integrated Aviation Systems Program, will fall under a future contract competition. NASA’s 10-year New Aviation Horizons initiative has the ambitious goals of reducing fuel use, emissions and noise through innovations in aircraft design that departs from the conventional tubeand-wing aircraft shape. The New Aviation Horizons X-planes will typically be about half-scale of a production aircraft and likely are to be piloted. Design-and-build will take several years with aircraft starting their flight campaign around 2020, depending on funding. NASA Begins Work to Build a Quieter Supersonic Passenger Jet

This is an artist’s concept of a possible Low Boom Flight Demonstration Quiet Supersonic Transport (QueSST) X-plane design. The award of a preliminary design contract is the first step towards the possible return of supersonic passenger travel – but this time quieter and more affordable. Credits: Lockheed Martin By Desert Star Staff The return of supersonic passenger air travel is one step closer to reality with NASA’s award of a contract for the preliminary design of a “low boom” flight demonstration aircraft. This is the first in a series of ‘X-planes’ in NASA’s New Aviation Horizons initiative, introduced in the agency’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden announced the award at an event Monday at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.

“NASA is working hard to make flight greener, safer and quieter – all while developing aircraft that travel faster, and building an aviation system that operates more efficiently,” said Bolden. “To that end, it’s worth noting that it’s been almost 70 years since Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 as part of our predecessor agency’s high speed research. Now we’re continuing that supersonic X-plane legacy with this preliminary design award for a quieter supersonic jet with an aim toward passenger flight.”

NASA selected a team led by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company of Palmdale, California, to complete a preliminary design for Quiet Supersonic Technology (QueSST). The work will be conducted under a task order against the Basic and Applied Aerospace Research and Technology (BAART) contract at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. After conducting feasibility studies and working to better understand acceptable sound levels across the

Oscar winners party it up at Vanity Fair Ball

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES CA. There’s no such thing as being all dressed up with nowhere to go on Oscar night. The Hollywood elite have various glamorous parties to choose from, whether they attended the Academy Awards or not. Here’s a roundup of the post-Oscars party action:

GOVERNORS BALL: After hours on the red carpet and a three-and-a-half hour telecast, Academy Awards guests are ready for some food when the show ends. That’s why the first stop for many is the Governors Ball, the Oscars’ official afterparty, held just upstairs from where the show takes place. Benicio del Toro snacked on pizza as he snaked through the party. “The Revenant” cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, enjoyed some strawberries, his new Oscar by his side. Steven Spielberg opted for liquid refreshment (a Heineken), which he sipped on while speaking with supporting actor winner Mark Rylance, who gleefully posed with his trophy. Meanwhile, Tobey Maguire chatted with Bryan Cranston, and Common smiled for a photo with fans. Wolfgang Puck catered the party, serving miniburgers, smoked-salmon Oscars, caviar-topped baked potatoes and chicken potpies. There was also a sushi spread, a table filled with crab legs and lobster claws, and a vast array of desserts. The Governors Ball is also where the night’s winners can have their new Oscars engraved with their names. Leonardo DiCaprio commanded a huge audience when he arrived to have his statuette personalized, all trying to capture a cellphone photo of the best actor winner. No sooner had he left than best actress Brie Larson arrived, her new Oscar and longtime boyfriend Alex Greenwald in tow. He snapped pictures of her as her statuette was engraved, and the two toasted with Champagne and a kiss when it was finished. In fact, every guest at the ball took home an Oscar: tiny chocolate Oscars were given as party favors.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Rest and relaxation are most important. Retreat continues to be a required need. No matter what you attempt, veils drop in front of you. Should you push forward, you only find clouds of confusion. Go slowly, use your heart, slip into a comforting environment (and shoes), dance and sing and sway to kirtan music. Krishna Das (Yoga’s Rock Star) and Deva Premal & Mitenstill are some of the best kirtan singers.

TAURUS Your entire focus is on group work and creation of community. This is correct for it will be only through intentionally creating, living and working within community that humanity will be able to thrive in the coming years. There is a need to tend to your immediate health. This assures us you will continue with the vision and leadership needed to get us from here to there with safety, right direction and right resources.

GEMINI The planets, all clustered together in Pisces (sign of saving the world), are nestled in your house of work, which is where, and how you’re recognized, seen and remembered in the world. What are your thoughts these

days concerning your work, profession, career, leadership skills and public life? During this full moon serve those around you with great dedication and love. Tend to the home and garden. Consider your future.

CANCER Maintain simplicity this week. Tend to easy chores, seek help if needed. You must maintain health and strength. You may be thinking of an upcoming trip or travels somewhere. It may be a very important journey. Tending to things holy and blessed. Careful walking, accomplishing tasks, getting from here to wherever you need to be. Communicate with those you love more frequently. It builds your strength of character.

LEO Have you found yourself working slower, having to redo, review, reassess and create a calm and patient sense of inner resilience these recently? What is occurring with your money and finances? And with money and resources held in common with another. Did something unexpected, expansive, confusing or illuminating occur? This is a very special and expansive time to tithe to those in need. You will then be given more, so you can give again.

VIRGO

When the moon’s in Virgo, the Sun’s in your opposite sign of Pisces. Integration takes place between yourself and others - those close to you, intimate friends, those you work and live with and even enemies. Virgo and Pisces, like all opposite signs, shadow each other, holding the secret of wholeness. The gifts one sign possesses the other needs. The shadow of the other eventually integrates during full moon times.

LIBRA Is the unusual occurring in your life? With multiple Pisces planets you could be involved with building a natural pool filled with plants. Is there water rushing nearby or in your workplace. You could be engulfed in a flood of tears. You could be learning to swim or ride the waves. You could be thinking of saving the world. Or yourself. You could be lost, confused or realize you’re being purified and prepared. Build a fountain.

SCORPIO Creativity should have slipped into your life quite easily taking you by the hand, creating new interests and goals, asking that you mingle a bit more among artists, writers, musicians, performers so you begin to identify more specifically as highly creative

and not just a dark stranger behind sunglasses and long black coat while standing in the bright, hot and radiant sun. Someone shows up to help you understand.

SAGITTARIUS Many opportunities seem to overflow into your life. So many you may feel under/ overwhelmed. Don’t be. Some you’ll understand, some you won’t. Some are good, some not. As they continue to appear, you find what feels like home with safe and protective barriers. Sometimes we just need to retreat, hide under covers and lazily swim toward tranquility. Do this.

CAPRICORN Because you’re the zodiac’s traditionalist, it’s good to begin your yearly tradition of growing grass in basket, learning how to dye Easter eggs with natural leaves & grasses, thinking about making food baskets for Purim or Easter, and preparing to bake nuts and honey and poppy seed sweet breads while reading from the Book of Esther, the only Old Testament book that does not spell out G-d’s name.

in any of these areas of life, give yourself time to acclimate because something’s unfolding and something’s being refined. Keep close and careful tabs on all money and finances. It’s possible you’ll be taken over by a desire for a very expensive object. Don’t be. It’s an illusion. Save.

PISCES This full moon brings the hidden out into the open. It may be a new self-identity. Six lights (4 planets, 2 asteroids), in Pisces should illuminate very deep and interior parts of yourself. You”re often uncomfortable with the world as it presents itself now. You seek to know what’s real, what’s ahead, what came before and what just passed you by. And where you are to go. You’ll soon know which direction to take. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. this private domain is within walking distance of the unique shops and galleries of the famous Uptown Design District. As for Arrive, it’s a concept in customer-driven control that favors text messaging over telephones for guest requests, and the clever thought process that went into it is evident from the moment guests cross the threshold. For example, their Assisted Living weekly Pool party is a whimsical case in point. T H E AT R E Bathsheba Doran’s “The Mystery of Love & Sex” BY BEVERLY COHN

Charlotte (Mae Whitman) and her mom Lucinda (Sharon Lawrence) enjoy some together time before the wedding. Photo by Craig Schwartz Please forgive me for putting Luigi Pirandello’s iconic play “Six Characters in Search of An Author” in the same sentence as Bathsheba Doran’s “The Mystery of Love & Sex, which could be subtitled “Four Characters in Search of a Cohesive Play.” With elevator-type music playing, the interminable Act 1 opening scene begins at a college somewhere in the south. A most strident Mae Whitman’s character of Charlotte, along with her life-long buddy and college roommate Jonny, played by York Walker, are preparing a dinner for her parents, which consists of salad and bread, sans butter. Sharon Lawrence, who punches the sit-com type laugh lines, plays her heavy drinking, potsmoking mom, Lucinda, who seems to be in a fog most of the time. David Pittu as

Howard, Charlotte’s dad, also falls into the trap of playing for laughs. There are multiple jokes about the makeshift table and tablecloth, which is actually a sheet. Howard makes such a fuss about the lack of butter that Jonny volunteers to go buy some. During Jonny’s absence, her parents grill her about her relationship. Charlotte hints that they are serious. Her dad reminds her that she passed on going to Yale and when he saw he was upsetting her, he backed down saying, “I never met a single person who went to Yale who wasn’t an asshole.” Asshole is always good for a laugh. Howard is a successful novelist who writes cheap detective stories. At one point Jonny asks Howard if he could interview him for a term paper. The eventual outcome isn’t exactly what Howard expected. could argue, however, that Howard’s multiple trips to the bank more than assuages

physically and rhythmically impaired. Eventually, he finally fesses up to being gay and confesses that he had sex with a man. One of the few lines with any honesty, Charlotte wants to know why he never told her. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want it to be true.” Later on, they have a confrontation in Charlotte’s back yard at which time he says, “You make being your friend a job.” A word about the back yard: Sorry, but when two large branches with dead leaves were lowered indicating the backyard, I couldn’t help but laugh at Takeshi Kata’s set design, which are usually quite wonderful. I don’t know if it was intentionally comical but one has come to expect a certain level of excellence in set designs at

high drama. Let’s sum it all up. A year has passed, and what a year! Charlotte has broken up with Claire. She is going to marry Martha who is a doctor. Mom’s advice: “There’s nothing to be nervous about. You can always get a divorce.” Jonny’s mother has died. He is in love with a pilot, and has volunteered to be the sperm donor for Charlotte and Martha. Mom and dad have split. Dad has a girlfriend named Carol. Jonny has gotten an advance on a book deal. Howard does not receive the news in a warm way as the book is based on an analysis of Howard’s characters, which is not very complimentary. While you can’t hold a director responsible for the script, you can hold him responsible for the direction.

L-R: David Pittu as Howard, May Whitman as his over-indulged daughter Charlotte, and Sharon Lawrence as her stoner mother Lucinda. Photo by Craig Schwartz his guilt feeling of not writing the great American novel. Amidst all the one-liners, mom turns to Charlotte and says, “Listen honey, grandma die.” A big non-sequitur laugh. Jonny, who is African American and Charlotte, a spoiled Jewish princess, have been friends since they were children, but they never crossed the line into becoming lovers. She decides that they should have sex and strips off all her clothes standing there naked as a Blue Jay. She jumps into bed and waits for Jonny to join her, shouting “Get over here and @#@**& me right now.” Jonny declines leaving her stranded naked in bed saying no for two reasons: 1) She’s drunk and it would be like date rape, and 2) He’s seeing a girl named Monique. Being a Baptist, he claims he’s saving himself for marriage. Or is he? So, instead of sex, they dance. Here’s a shocker. Jonny has a sense of rhythm while Charlotte dances like someone who is March 2, 2016

the Taper. I accepted the minimalistic designs of the other scenes, which the cast executed in choreographed rhythm. The rest of the technical team consisted of Karl Fredric Lundeberg’s uneven original music and sound design, and Rui Rita’s adequate Lighting Design. As we move through the mire of slick laugh lines, we find out that Jonny’s mom is quite ill and Charlotte is having a sexual identity crisis. She has a crush on a girl named Claire, a macho-type woman with a shaved head. Poor Charlotte. Vagina or penis? Eventually, in a contrived piece of direction, Jonny, too, strips down declaring, “This is who I am.” Not sure what being naked illuminates who he is, but I suppose it’s an eye-catching theatrical device. That said, there is one very authentic comical moment by an actor with a walk-on role. After all the go-forthe-laughs in Act 1, Act 2 does a 360 from sitcom/ soap opera to sometimes

Robert Egan’s direction highlighted the weakest part of Doran’s writing pandering to the built-in laugh lines and going for the shtick. He did not reign in Mae Whitman’s vocal performance, which consisted of a whole lot of yelling. Perhaps the most honest performance came from York Walker who delivered an unencumbered performance without using a bag of acting tricks. At one point, after over indulging Charlotte since she was a baby, dad says, “Jesus. Having kids is exhausting.” My sentiments exactly about sitting through this play. Mark Taper Forum 135 N. sing the original nominated songs they had written for “The Hunting Ground” and “Spectre.” It was also fun to see young Jacob Tremblay’s face light up when the “Star Wars” droids R2D2, BB-8 and C-3PO came out on stage. (Tremblay is the terrific child actor from “The Room” who, despite his terrific performance in the film, didn’t get nominated.) In the skit, C-3PO pointed out that the golden Oscar looked just like him. And speaking of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the film didn’t take home a single golden Oscar, but it has grossed over $2 billion globally,

Emotional performance by Lady Gaga of “Til It Happens to You” from the documentary film “The Hunting Ground”

more than all eight Oscar nominated films put together. On the downside, this year’s telecast needed some judicious editing. It took too long to get to the main awards of the evening because the show went on well past the allotted three hours. Often less can be more!

Nando Perrado: 72 days on a mountain top Story and Photos by Pat Krause Desert Town Hall presented by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation brought Nando Perrado to speak about his experiences on 72 days on a mountaintop that everyone said NO one could survive. The plane crash and the story of these brave men was told in the movie ALIVE. His Miracle in the Andes presentation left everyone speechless and spell bound. He showed several videos of the mountain, where they were and their rescue. 27 survived the crash but only 15 survived the ordeal. He spoke about their fear when they learned by transistor radio that the search for them had been cancelled. They all made a pact that if they were to survive they pledged their lives to save the rest. This he called heroic, as they were the first to give their bodies to save the rest. Less than 3 weeks after the crash the plane they were living in was covered by snow because of an avalanche. It took them 3 days to dig them selves out. Nando spoke about the teamwork, determination to live and leadership that few will ever know. He said they lived because they believed in themselves. www.desertstarweekly.com

Nando Parrado. Photo by Pat Krause Nando said he awoke from a concussion after 5 days only to find out his mother and other friends from the Uruguayan Rugby team had died in the crash and his sister was near death and died in his arms. The brutality of the mountains weather and facing death its something very hard to imagine. His determination was not to die and became obsessed with surviving. He and fellow teammate decided to try for a rescue by walking out but not knowing where to go. They would reach one mountain top only find more and more mountaintops in their path. They came upon a man 10 days later that went for help

Doug and Gwen Vance with Sherrie and Ron Auen. Photo by Pat Krause that was 10 hours by horse back to a camp. Their rescue was so emotional. Nando said that you breath and breath again so you are alive. Do not waste a breath, never look back, stay away from drugs and alchohol, enjoy life, do not be afraid of being afraid, learn from your mistakes, believe in yourself and follow your heart. Kelly & Kornienko’s ‘Exciting ride back to Earth’

By Desert Star Staff One of the longest and most exciting space journeys is coming to an end. US astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko who have spent 340 days in space are saying goodbye to the International Space Station (ISS). Their landing on Earth is scheduled for March 2, at 7:25am Moscow time (4:25am GMT) and will occur in Kazakhstan. Russian cosmonaut Sergey Volkov who spent less time in orbit - 182 days, will accompany Kelly and Kornienko. They will be brought down to Earth by the Russian Soyuz TMA-18M spacecraft. The mission, in which Kelly and Kornienko both took part, could give scientists hints of how to better arrange long space journeys – to Mars, for example. During their mission, the spacemen conducted almost 400 experiments and even successfully grew flowers on board the ISS for the first time ever. Over the course of 5,440 orbits, they traveled more than 143 million miles – roughly the distance from Earth to Mars – witnessing almost 11,000 sunrises and sunsets. They also helped with or participated in six spacewalks. Speaking to journalists

last week, Kelly said he could spend some more time in space if given a good reason. “I could go another hundred days, I could go another year if I had to. It would just depend on what I was doing and if it made sense, although I do look forward to getting home,” he said at the time, as quoted by CBS News. “Subjectively, I feel great, and I think it’s something that, going to Mars and having people stay in space for much longer than we have before, is clearly doable,” he added. Kelly also paid tribute to the Russian Soyuz spacecraft that is to deliver the crew to Earth. “The Soyuz is a pretty exciting ride back Earth, no question about it,” he said adding that “it’s so much fun for me that I said after my last flight, if I’d hated being in space for six months I’d have done it all over again just for that last 20 minutes in the Soyuz. It’s that type of an experience.” Kornienko and Kelly will undergo a special ‘field test’ immediately after landing, TASS reported citing sources in the Institute of MedicoBiological Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The sources said that the tests are necessary to study the physiological capabilities of a man during landing on other planets. The tests will be

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly (L) and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. © NASA / Reuters conducted in a tent specially set up by the Russian recovery forces at the landing site. “If the participants of sixmonth expeditions have the right to reject the ‘field test’, then Kornienko and Kelly will surely undergo it. The test will check the spacemen’s physical capacity – the ability to sit, get up from a lying position, to stand still and walk a straight line after a long flight and overload during landing,” the institute said, as quoted by TASS. Earlier, Russian State Space Corporation Roscosmos

also said that Kornienko and Kelly would have to leave their lander unaided, thus simulating conditions similar to landing on Mars where nobody would aid the crew. This mission would be the longest space journey in the history of the US space exploration, but it would not be such in the history of the Russian space studies as four Russian cosmonauts had spent more time on orbit than Kelly and Kornienko. In 1988, Vladimir Titov and Musa Manarov spent 365 days on Russia’s Mir

orbital station, while Sergey Avdeyev spent 380 days in orbit in 1999. In 1995, Valery Polyakov spent 437 days in orbit, setting a world record for the longest space flight. A crew consisting of the Russian cosmonaut Yury Malenchenko, NASA astronaut Timothy Kopra and Timothy Peake from the UK will replace Kelly, Kornienko and Volkov at the ISS. NASA astronaut Jeff Williams and Russian cosmonauts Oleg Skripochka and Alexei Ovchinin will join them on March 19.

Oscar Weekend Goes to the Dogs: Animal Film Festival in California

The third annual Animal Film Festival will be held Saturday in Grass Valley, Calif. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Weekly Move over, Oscars! The movie business is going the dogs - and cats and birds, horses, and even lobsters - once the third annual Animal Film Festival starts on Saturday. The festival, which runs all day at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley, about an hour outside Sacramento, will feature 20 films, mostly documentaries and film shorts on a range of topics, including the roundup and slaughter of wild horses and the issue of pet overpopulation. “People need to realize that we need to have our

12

animals altered so that we don’t reproduce,” said Shelley Frost, the festival’s director. “So many animals are killed just because of lack of good homes, not any fault of the animals.” If you can’t make it to the festival, you’ll still be able to see the films when the Animal Film Festival Channel launches on Roku this spring. It will feature films from all three years of the festival. Filmmaker Laura MacLean produced and stars in a comedic short about a housewife whose kitty cats seem to multiply every time she looks out on the porch.

“Cat videos are the number one videos to go viral, ever, on the Internet so, it’s just a time for animal videos, without a doubt,” she said. “If you can use a 90-second video using humor and education at the same time, I think it’s well worth doing for animal welfare.” The films that win “audience choice” votes will go on tour later this year, with stops scheduled in Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Marin County so far. More information is online at AnimalFilmFestival.org. March 2, 2016

Cabazon Man Dies After Trying To Help Victims Of A Crash

By Carlos Herrera CABAZON, Ca. -A Cabazon man died early this morning while trying to save a driver from a fiery car crash. The accident happened at

12:43 a.m. at the intersection of Magnolia Street and Bonita Avenue, just south of the 10 Freeway, said Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department. Thirty-year-old

Rory Nason died after he tried helping the victims of the car crash. A car collided with a utility pole and knocked down some power lines. Nason saw the crash and

jumped out of his car, leaving his family behind. As Nason rushed to help the people involved in the crash, he was electrocuted by the downed power lines. Nason’s family is now mourning his death. “My husband was the most generous man that I know, he would help anybody,” Nason’s wife Ashely Pingree said. Family and friends also describe Nason as a hardworking family man, who was always ready to give a helping hand. “He did not deserve for his life to be taken so soon,” Pingree said. According to his family, the cause of his death reflects the way he was as a person. “He had no hesitation and ready to just dive in and help someone he thought was in need,” life-long friend Sean Sandoval said. As SoCal Edison crews worked to repair the downed power lines, family and friends gathered at the scene. They lit candles, and brought flowers to pay tribute to their local hero. “He will be remembered as a hero, he is a hero,” Nason’s mother-

in-law Susan Pingree said. Meanwhile, authorities recognize Nason acted like a hero and was selfless in trying to help the people involved in the crash, but he also exposed himself to danger. “With the exposed power lines and vehicles that are on fire, there’s always a risk that people face,” public information officer for Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Vasquez said. Authorities would like to remind the public to always call professionals to handle situations like those. According to investigators, there was nobody inside the car that crashed into the power pole. In fact the driver has yet to be found. If you have any information about the crash, you are urged to call Cabazon Sheriff Station at (951) 922-7100. If you’re interested in helping Nason’s family, they have set up a GOFUND-ME account to help pay for expenses.

MUSIC Range of styles sure to reward listeners BY ROBERT KINSLER

Listeners have plenty of exciting new music to discover, as evidenced by the latest titles featuring genre-blasting modernists Dr. Dog, R&B master James Hunter, blues singer-guitarist Tommy Castro and composer Hans Zimmer.

Record Player” and grooving Bowiesque “Bring My Baby Back.” A concept album that chronicles the tale of a “man who attempts to escape his boring existence by entering The Psychedelic Swamp,” the important thing here is that band mates Scott McMicken and Toby Leaman have penned an involving opus that makes you think even while you are moving to the music. Information: drdogmusic.com.

the new James Hunter Six album “Hold On!” uptempo rock ‘n’ soul (“If That Don’t Tell You,” “Stranded”) and soulful ballads (“This Is Where We Came In,” “Something’s Calling,” “In the Dark”) are delivered with authenticity and fervor. Hunter is a fantastic guitarist, as evidenced by the captivating instrumental “Satchel Foot.” The good news for American audiences is that the James Hunter Six is on tour through May, including upcoming dates that bring the Englishman to the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point, CA on May 21. Castro & the Painkillers is to rediscover the fusion of musical firepower and honest emotion that marks the genre’s best proponents. “Method to My Madness” finds the Bay Areabased Castro and his band unleashing originals mixing up the full range of blues via the R&B track “Common Ground,” slide guitar-anchored blues-rocker “Shine A Light,” soul-styled “Died and Gone to Heaven,” straightforward rocker “Got A Lot” and other riches. A terrific lead guitarist and wonderful vocalist, Castro always uses his musical gifts in the service of his songs; the performances are nuanced and share much in common with his own influential heroes (B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Wilson Pickett). Information: TommyCastro.com.

By Michael James Barton OP In the final polls, Ted Cruz was slated to place second in Iowa. Considering he loudly criticized the Renewable Fuel Standard -- the Washington boondoggle that turns corn into ethanol gold for Iowa farmers -- days before the Caucus, Cruz’s victory was particularly surprising. You know a law is crazy when its biggest beneficiaries vote for someone who wants to end it. Shockingly, the RFS will soon do even more damage. The Environmental Protection Agency recently mandated that even more ethanol -- and other renewable fuels -- be blended into gasoline in 2016. That’s a big mistake: the RFS is bad for the environment and bad for the economy. Congress created the RFS in 2005 and bumped it up in 2007. This latest jump in the standard requires over 18 billion gallons of biofuels be blended into the fuel supply for 2016. The purpose of mandating the addition of ethanol to gasoline in the first place was to decrease our dependence

on foreign oil sources and do less environmental damage. But since the RFS was created, the United States has overtaken both Saudi Arabia and Russia to become the world’s largest oil and natural gas producer. So, we’re less dependent on foreign energy than ever, and the RFS has nothing to do with it. Scientists have also questioned the supposed environmental benefits of ethanol. In 2014, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report acknowledging, “biofuels indirect emissions -- including from land use change -can lead to greater total emissions than when using petroleum products.” The International Institute for Sustainable Development has concluded that after factoring in the energy demands from all the aspects of crop cultivation, there are no net environmental benefits. Instead, the RFS is costing Americans. Each gallon of biofuel gets a code -- known as a Renewable

Identification Number -- that allows it to be tracked through the supply chain and sold in a secondary market. The EPA ensures compliance with renewable fuel mandates by tracking how many RINs refineries purchase compared to their petroleum output. But this secondary market has been anything but stable. In the past few years, RINs have fluctuated from one cent a gallon to over a dollar because of a draughtcaused corn shortage. These added costs are passed on to the gas pump. While we’re currently enjoying record low gas prices, that’s no thanks to the RFS. It has artificially created price instability in the fuel market and amounts to a massive hidden tax at the pump. The RFS is also picking Americans’ pockets at the grocery store. The RFS has expanded the market for corn greatly -- 40 percent of all corn grown in America is used for ethanol. Consequently, more farmers are growing corn instead of other important foodstuffs. In fact, the RFS has increased

costs for chain restaurants by up to $3.2 billion annually -- likewise costs that get passed on to consumers. The bottom line is that every reason underlying the establishment of the RFS has been proven wrong or outdated. The RFS doesn’t contribute to energy independence, does nothing for the environment, and is harmful to agriculture. The RFS has always been more about politics

enjoy: Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams Tell me more: Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer has scored countless films since 1988’s “Rain Man,” with his impressive resume including “The Lion King,” “Gladiator,” “The Thin Red Line” and “The Dark Knight.” Zimmer’s most recent score is for “Kung Fu Panda 3,” and the soundtrack showcases that even apart from the popular DreamWorks Animation film, Zimmer’s music is a delight. A wide range of emotions are explored via symphonic and choral sounds that blend western and Chinese stylings. Whether creating tension that fully involves the listener (“Jaded,” “Two Fathers”), joyous celebrations (“The Hall of Heroes”) or simply painting the loveliest of soundscapes (“Oogway’s Legacy” featuring pianist Lang Lang; “Portrait of Mom”), Zimmer continues to be one of the film industry’s modernday masters. The “Kung Fu Panda 3” soundtrack also includes a bouncy remake of the 1974 hit “Kung Fu Fighting” performed by the Vamps, as well as the accompanying film’s infectious theme so

Homeless Encampment Removed by Cal Trans By Julie Buehler COACHELLA, Ca. -It’s a story we’ve been following since last November: A homeless encampment in Coachella believed it would be bulldozed by Cal Trans. And today, Cal Trans began clearing the encampment. Now there could be legal action as the homeless say their rights are being bulldozed. Cal Trans sent out notification on January 25th that this homeless camp would be cleared out on February 26th. On the 29th, the bulldozers showed up to to clear the half acre homeless encampment just off Highway 86. Cal Trans owns this land and told us they’ve been looking to clear this encampment for safety reasons. They want to protect both drivers - and the growing number of homeless people in the area as the camp has grown and more people are crossing the busy highway. But according to local attorney, Christy Holstege, who says she’s been retained by the homeless people, their constitutional rights have been trampled in this process. She and other homeless advocates say the 30-day notice was not sufficient for the homeless to find other places to live - and the state did not make accommodations for those with disabilities. But Cal Trans disagrees saying the process has been

in the works for quite a while. The past few weeks have seen a lot of activity in the homeless camp in Coachella. “I’m physically exhausted,” exclaimed Toni Guard, one of the homeless that live in the Tamarisk trees off Highway 86. “I haven’t slept in 4 days trying to move this stuff on a bicycle and I’m just exhausted. I’ve been moving for over, like 2 and a half weeks. For more than a decade - people have reportedly built shelters on the land. “This encampment has been out here for some time and due to safety concerns for the people living in this encampment,” says Cal Trans official Terry Kasinga. “So close to the highway and crossing and that kind of thing....it’s come time that we need to remove the encampment.” Cal Trans says the process to clear the encampment began informally in the November. But waited until after the holidays to deliver the official 30-day eviction notices. “They all knew this day was coming,” says Kasinga. “We’ve done everything we can to try to work with them and try to provide them some alternatives of places they can go and organizations they can use for assistance.” Those who lived there say 30 days just wasn’t enough time. “I have a storage unit, but I put 4 boxes in my

buggie here and ride 3 and half miles to my storage,” said Guard. “And I had a lot of stuff in there because my mother had passed away.” Social services tell us they visited on 3 occasions, the latest, on February 22nd and offered a job fair and housing assistance. They said some of the homeless residents chose to ignore the services, while others are requesting more time to secure housing. “I looked for a place to live, and I didn’t find anything,” said Guard. “They offered us housing a few days ago, but you have to qualify and that takes you know, I don’t a month, 2 months, but we all have no place to go.” A homeless advocate says the camp has been around so long - it even

has its own association. Christian Jelmberg, the founder of The Streetlife Project says, “These guys have been residents here. Some of them have been here over 15 years.” But Cal Trans says regardless of how long they have been there, staying put is just not safe. “We’re not sure exactly, the number of years change depending on who you talk to,” Kasinga says. “But they’ve been out here for some time and their safety has become a concern not only for the highway patrol but the department, and that’s our primary concern is not only their safety but the safety of the motorists.” Holstege and local homeless outreach services

say there’s about 15-20 homeless campers here, what they call residents and after seeing the sophistication of their shelters, it’s easy to see why they’re called that. And that’s the foundation of their claims, that the homeless are in fact residents of this area and they deserved more time to relocate. But Cal Trans and their legal team disagree with that notion. The belongings left behind will be stored, at the expense of Cal Trans, for 90 days, beyond that, they’ll be tossed. And once the encampment is removed, these tamarisk trees will also be taken out to prevent any further settlements. Cal Trans tell us, they will then look to sell the property. Source KMIR

said it will continue to employ McComb, but in a different department. SeaWorld also claimed it was responding to credible threats made against its parks, animals and employees, but no longer will use this tactic. Cronin said PETA would like SeaWorld to build coastal wildlife sanctuaries and use virtual-reality displays instead of keeping animals confined and training them to amuse audiences. “We will not stop until the orcas, the dolphins, the seals and the other animals are sent to seaside sanctuaries and not forced to spend their lives in tiny, concrete tanks,” he said. Late last year, SeaWorld announced it will be phasing out the popular orca shows at its parks. In addition, the California Coastal Commission has banned the breeding of killer whales.

By Desert Star Staff Animal-rights advocates with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are speaking out in the wake of revelations that SeaWorld sent some of its employees to spy on them. On Thursday, SeaWorld chief executive Joel Manby admitted in an earnings call that his company directed workers to go undercover, pose as activists and infiltrate the group. PETA spokesman Liam Cronin said SeaWorld employee Paul McComb went by a false name and even got arrested at a PETA protest. “We found that SeaWorld employees were participating in demonstrations or protests, and in fact encouraging people on social media to take drastic and illegal actions, as a way to try and get our supporters to do things that would damage the movement,” he said. By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - A new federal assessment shows the population of sardines off the West Coast has continued to plummet; it’s a third lower than last spring, even though the entire sardine fishery was closed in 2015. The news means the fishery is very unlikely to reopen until at least 2017. Geoff Shester, Ph.D., California campaign director for the nonprofit advocacy group Oceana, says scientists have been warning the Pacific Fishery Management Council and the National Marine Fisheries Service about severe overfishing for years. “They warned of a population collapse and the fishery management body basically turned a blind eye and continued moving forward with business as

usual,” he says. “And now they’re blaming ocean conditions for this collapse.” Shester says the population was collapsing before ocean warming caused by El Nino. Scientists now believe the sardine population is down 93 percent since 2007, which is starving species such as sea lions and pelicans that feed on the sardines. In 2015, 3,000 sea lions washed up on shore and researchers estimate that in recent years 70 percent of sea lion pups have died. Shester says the situation would be even worse if they hadn’t closed the fishery last year, but it was still too little, too late. “When fishing pressure occurs during a decline, which is exactly what happened here,” says Shester. “It puts the

stock at such dramatically low levels it impedes any recovery potentially for decades.” Shester says fishermen, mainly in Monterey, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, have had to switch to catching squid

and anchovies, which are now facing population pressures. From 2009 to 2014, California fishing crews brought in an average of almost $4 million worth of sardines per year.

By Desert Star Weekly The Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health is calling for a full ban on e-cigarettes after a study they commissioned discovered that e-cigarettes contain a million more cancer-causing substances than polluted air. The research, carried out by the Baptist University, also found a type of flame retardant in the devices that affected the reproductive system and could also lead to cancer. Thirteen random electronic cigarettes available on the Chinese market were analyzed and returned worrying results: the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a by-

product of burning petroleum also found in polluted roadside air, ranged from 2.9 to 504.5 nanograms per milliliter. That’s “at least one million times more than roadside air in Hong Kong,” according to Dr Chung Shan-shan, assistant professor in the Baptist University’s biology department. Another substance of concern found in abundance is Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). These are flameretardants that are widely used in the manufacturing of furniture and electronic products. With an average 5 nanograms per milliliter in a conventional cigarette, the number of PBDEs in

e-cigarettes range from 1.7 to 1,490 nanograms per milliliter. PBDEs are added to e-cigarettes to reduce the risk of burning in the devices’ plastic combustible components. According to Dr Chung Shan-shan, inhalation of PBDEs has been associated with thyroid hormone disruption and reduction of fertility; it affects fetal development and can cause cancers. “Even though we don’t know the exact number of e-cigarettes one should take, not to mention that many of the carcinogenic effects are cumulative, I don’t think there is a safe margin,” Chung said. At least 16 countries

have imposed a total ban on e-cigarettes, including Singapore, Thailand and Brazil, while the World Health Organization (WHO) admits that there is insufficient information so far on health implications caused by e-cigarettes. “Some research programs are already under way but given that e-cigarettes have been popular in the last four or five years, research has barely started and it’s early days yet. It would take about five or 10 years before we have evidence that could change the current picture.” Armando Peruga, Programmer Manager of WHO’s Tobacco Free Initiative, said in a 2014 interview.

US premiere of comedy/farce “Now You See It”

By Jack Lyons Farce, in general, as a theatrical genre has always been a tough sell to American audiences. Lately, we’ve seen a noticeable upswing in the plays of the masters of the genre - playwrights like the great Moliere, and the “Belle Epoque” favorite Georges Feydeau - being staged again, albeit, via translations mainly by British playwrights, and the American playwright David Ives. Some plays are being updated to resonate with 21st century society others are receiving tweaks here and tweaks there, new characters with new names, some evolving some not. But the bottom-line is they’re being produced and being embraced by Millennial audiences. And that is good news for the art form and theatre in general. Farces are fun and don’t necessarily require over-analysis on the part of the audience. The laughter stems from the characters themselves and how they get into and out of situations they find themselves in – usually of their own making. The piquant sauciness of French farce-romps is seductive as well as little naughty. But it’s all done in good fun. North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT) has a successful track record of producing winning farce and sophisticated productions and their current offering of “Now You See It” by Georges Feydeau with a translation by English playwright Kenneth McLeish, is no exception. Artistic Director David Ellenstein who has a keen eye and ear for plays that he knows will entertain his sophisticated and theatre-savvy audiences brings back to NCRT actor/ director Bruce Turk to stage this comedy gem. Turk, not only brings a wealth of experience and talent to the table, he is blessed with cast of polished farceurs that bring the British Edwardian time

frame and setting right up to the front door of the theatre. The story, set in Edwardian England revolves around Summersby (Kern McFadden) a Member of Parliament and his beautiful, but jealous, young wife Marie-Louise (Alison Minick). Summersby has learned the skill of how to hypnotize Marie-Louise in order to carry on nightly assignations with other women while she sleeps blissfully unaware until he awakens her from her trance. This way he is able to stay one step ahead of the jealous Marie-Louise and happily lead a double life as prominent member of society and a serial philanderer. Naturally, in comedy-farce old suitors always seem to drop in unannounced. Enter Mr. Shaftsbury-Phipps (David McBean) a former admirer of Marie-Louise who has recently returned from ‘Inja’ seeking to reignite the flame of his long standing crush. His ardor, however, is not immediately reciprocated. But he soldiers on hoping for a change of heart even though the lady’s already married (hope truly does spring eternal in the world of the theatre). Meanwhile, Summersby’s latest dalliance with the wife of Vole, the local wine merchant (Ruff Yeager, in all his imposing 6’6” frame) is becoming suspicious and confronts Summersby. Experienced seducers are always ready for these situations. Before the two men part, they’ve become business partners! No harm, no foul, but no more spoiler alerts either. The crisp pacing and impeccable timing executed by the cast under the steady and inventive hand of director Turk makes for a delightful evening at the theatre. “Now You See It” is also spiced throughout with little bits of on stage magic performed by the actors which adds another dimension to this clever production. I asked one of the actors later how that stage business use of magic was performed. True to the code

Allison Minick, David McBean & Kern McFadden. Photos courtesy of North Coast Repertory Theatre. of all magicians, I received a wide smile and twinkling eyes by way of an explanation. Alison Minick, Kern McFadden, David McBean, John Greenleaf, and Ruff Yeager are a winning ensemble cast who know their way around a classic farce when they are in one. It’s a delightful production that will tickle everyone’s funny bone. The technical credits at North Coast Rep are always first rate. The audience, upon entering the theatre is met by a visually stunning and inviting set design by resident design wizard Marty Burnett. Lighting designer Matt Novotny bathes the stage in warm

and mood inducing shafts of light in all the right places. One is never disappointed by a Burnett and Novotny collaboration. In fact, it’s a Hallmark of NCRT productions. The costumes by Anastasia Pautova (new to me, but definitely a keeper) are spot-on for the period and look great on stage. The great Laurence Olivier, it’s been said always began creating his character/persona from the outside – meaning prosthetics and costumes – to the inside where the text became the catalyst for the performance to come. If one doesn’t believe that costumes aren’t really important to a production,

just ask any actor. But, be prepared for a passionate discussion on the subject. Sound Designer Melanie Chen, Hair and Wig design by Peter Herman, and Prop design by Andrea Gutierrez, and Magic Consultant George Tovar complete the creative team led by director Turk. Make sure you stay seated for the curtain call. It’s one of the cleverest and creative curtain calls I’ve seen years. And that piece of inspired business is the province of the director, Mr. Bruce Turk. “Now You See It” performs at North Coast Repertory Theatre, Solana Beach, through March 20, 2016.
