By Desert Star Staff WILKES BARRE, Pa. – Ringling Brothers Circus on Sunday closed the curtain on the use of elephants in its shows with a final performance in Wilkes Barre. Pressure has been mounting on circuses to end elephant acts. For the elephants, the traveling shows can mean long hours of being shackled and confined in small spaces, and the use of painful bullhooks for training them to do tricks. Lisa Wathne, a captive exotic animal specialist with the Humane Society of the United States, calls the end of those practices cause for celebration.
“Ringling Brothers’ decision is monumental news, and a very clear sign that times and public opinions are changing about the use of wild animals in circuses,” she states. The circus’ decision to retire its elephant acts now puts Ringling Brothers almost two years ahead of its own schedule for ending those performances. According to Wathne, several states, including Pennsylvania, are considering legislation that would phase out the use of bullhooks on elephants. “But there are more

Annual Evening under the Stars Gala
Story and Photos by Pat Krause Hundreds of people filled the grounds at the O’Donnell Golf Course for the 23rd Annual Evening Under the Stars Gala on April 30th. The reception area was filled with everyone dressed to the nines. Drink stations were everywhere so there were no long lines waiting for refreshments. The Gala is a fundraiser for AIDS Assistance Program, AAP. The event is also a way to reward special people with humanitarian awards. The evening’s entertainment was by The Village People group. Honorees this year was Senator Barbara Boxer with the Jeanette Rockefeller Humanitarian Award who said she was retiring from the Senate at the end of this year but was still going to be a fighter for HIV/AIDS. Terri Ketover was given the Gloria Greene Inspiritation Award and said she wanted
to acknowledge her husband Bart as the biggest supporter in all that she does. Cathy MacNaughton received the Herb Lazenby Community Service Award and was thrilled with the award. Emcee Lily Tomlin was smiling and proud when she gave her partner Jane Wagner the Joanna Jakway Community Hero Award. AAP gave an inaugural award this year to Walgreens as a Corporate Angel Award for their years of support in the HIV/AIDS struggle. Guests were urged to bring their cell phones to the stage to welcome The Village People by taking photos and videos of the performance. As soon as the Village People came on stage the dance floor was filled with guests taking photos, moving with the music and some were trying to dance at the back of the dance floor. The Village People really know how to get the crowd on their feet to enjoy
the fun. They are a nationally well known group with hits like “Macho Man” and “YMCA” and are credited with bringing gay culture into the forefront. AAP not only helps people with HIV/AIDS but others with health issues, and most are low-income people. AAP has a variety of programs but mainly provides food so no one will go hungry. CEO Mark Anton said that most of the clients rarely leave the program. There is always a waiting list of people in need and money is needed to help everyone. AAP survives on private donations, special events and local support. They get no state or federal funds. Each client gets a $100 dollar voucher monthly for food and necessities and must pass income and residency guidelines, and some are tested regularly for illegal drugs.

Universal Economic Factors Impacting our Economy
By Janice Gough As OPEC countries reduce production sharply, oil will continue to fluctuate. The price of oil effects the cost of everything that we pay for. This year we have enjoyed the blessing of spending less for our number one commodity. These lower costs have put more money in our pockets to spend on other things and keeping out economy afloat. The price of a barrel of oil will always fluctuate based on supply and demand and with less production and higher demand, prices will rise The lower oil prices are due to the

overproduction of oil which has lead to this price collapse, which in turn has led to a sharp fall in oil and gas exploration. Consumption continues to rise due to more demand. Persistent economic growth in places like China and India are part of the reason for more consumption. Consumption of aviation fuel continues to rise, as low-cost airlines offer more flights by serving the rising middle class. Greater automobile production is also increasing demand. An Oil by-product, plastic, is used increasingly in modern cars. Since the financial crisis of 2008, global currency wars has caused a dispersion among the world’s central banks, causing many countries to reduce prime rate to zero and below. Negative interest rate policies (NIRP) has caused the devaluation of currency for countries like, Japan, Sweden and Switzerland. Japan and Europe have seen a far slower recovery, while in the U.S.,
the strategy of quantitative easing (printing more currency) and a slight increase in the prime rate last year, have strengthen the Dollar and brought about more stability to our market, whoever we are experiencing lower growth. Sluggish growth worldwide will impact our economy. Russia and Brazil are in recession, Chinese growth has slowed and Japan growth has faltered for two decades. In Europe, inflation has stabilized in places like Switzerland, Greece and Spain, which helps their consumers. However, these falling prices lead to a slowdown in investing by companies, as revealed during the American Depression. It is difficult to see the benefit in making products whose price is decreasing. That in turn has lead to fewer jobs and higher unemployment, which is why central banks fear deflation so much. There’s some risk of that happening in Europe. As 2015, came to an
end, the U.S. manufacturing sector experienced its largest annual decline since the “great financial recession” which ended in 2009. The International Monetary Fund has crowned China as the world’s number one economy. This is ostensibly a measure based on purchasing power parity in 2014. World trade is the largest segment of the U.S. dominant world economy, which also comprises the number one position in world trade leadership. Exports to China have reached a relatively low export level of $124 billion during that period, while imports reached $467 billion, for a total U.S./China trade of near $600 billion; and a trade deficit of $343 billion, almost half that of the 2014 world trade imbalance — the largest U.S. import/export trade deficit with any nation by far. These many factors are great concerns, however, as Warren Buffet commented,
“For 240 years it’s been a terrible mistake to bet against America, and now is no time to start. America’s golden goose of commerce and innovation will continue to lay more and larger eggs. America’s social security promises will be honored and perhaps made more generous. And, yes, America’s kids will live far better than their parents did.” Prefacing his comments with a John Kenneth Galbraith quote — “the job of economic forecasters is to make astrology seem respectable. HOA Homefront – Reader Questions – Dogs By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL
Dear Mr. Richardson, I was reading Civil Code 4715. That says associations can no longer prohibit owners from having a pet (defined as any domesticated bird, cat, or dog). My HOA still prohibits us from having a dog over 20 pounds. My father had a German Shepherd which was a companion dog (he had a letter from the doctor stating that). The HOA fined us and made us get rid of the dog. Just want to know if they could do that. Thank you for taking your time and reading this. F.P., Canoga Park

Best regards, Kelly Hi Kelly, Our rules require dogs be on leash at all times. However, two board members let their dogs off leash around their condos. How can this be handled without totally burning our bridges once we report this to the association? When I see things like this, it makes me think who cares about any of our rules. Thanks, T.W., Placentia Dear T.W: Board members should obey the association rules and use restrictions. They should receive no special privilege - that destroys the community’s trust in them. I often include in bylaws a provision disqualifying a
director if they are delinquent in assessments or have unpaid fines. I understand that your point here is that nobody is forcing them to comply. Under Civil Code 5975(b), only the association can enforce rule violations by a homeowner. Bluntly, if directors will not follow the rules, there are two obvious choices: Change the rule or change the board. If nobody speaks up about rule violations, they will continue. including the mechanism of targeting suspects slated for assassination. In his piece, Snowden pointed out that the biggest leaks in recent years, including The Drone Papers, Chelsea Manning’s revelations in 2010 and his own, all happened while the US has been the “uncontested hyperpower.” The American political system is in constant search of justification to use the country’s “unchallenged military machine,” he wrote. “In today’s context that justification is terrorism, but not necessarily because our leaders are particularly concerned about terrorism in itself or because they think it’s an existential threat to society,” the whistleblower stressed. “They recognize that even if we had a 9/11 attack every year, we would still be
losing more people to car accidents and heart disease, and we don’t see the same expenditure of resources to respond to those more significant threats,” he added. According to Snowden, the US leadership’s greatest fear is to be accused of being weak in the face of modern challenges. “Our politicians are more fearful of the politics of terrorism – of the charge that they do not take terrorism seriously – than they are of the crime itself,” he wrote. However, the whistleblower expressed belief that “unrestrained power may be many things, but it’s not American.” “It is in this sense that the act of whistleblowing increasingly has become an act of political resistance,” he stressed.

By Desert Star Staff By SACRAMENTO Tenants’ rights advocates are criticizing a bill getting its first hearing today in the California Legislature. It would force renters who are contesting an eviction to deposit their monthly rent in an account with an attorney. Assembly Bill 2312 would guarantee that money is set aside to pay the landlord while the trial proceeds. Larry Gross, executive director for the Coalition
for Economic Survival, an advocacy group, claims the bill introduced by Assemblyman Mike Gatto was actually written by the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles. “It will make it more difficult for tenants to defend themselves against evictions,” says Gross. “It sort of sets up a ‘pay-for-play’ situation.” The Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles says the bill simply requires residents to post unpaid rent as a good-faith pledge to
end the dispute quickly. Today’s 9 a.m. hearing in the Assembly Judiciary Committee is the first for this legislation at the State Capitol. Gross calls the bill unjust. He says 90 percent of tenants don’t have an attorney and could have a hard time finding one willing to set up the necessary account. He points out that the amount they’d be required to put in a separate, trust account might also be part of the dispute. “Tenants regularly dispute
how much they owe,” says Gross. “So, a landlord could be claiming a much higher amount that the tenant would be required to deposit with
the attorney before they could be defended in court.” He adds there is no similar requirement for other types of legal procedures.
By Desert Star Staff New research shows only a fraction of a percent of juvenile arrest records in Illinois get expunged, which could be a public safety risk. Juvenile justice advocates say heavy-handed state laws make it almost impossible for young people to erase a record through the expungement process. The Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission report
shows that for every 1,000 juvenile arrests, only three records are ever destroyed, and that includes arrests that did not lead to a conviction. Carolyn Frazier, a lawyer and assistant professor with the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, says those records are also shared with employers and landlords. “This widespread sharing of juvenile records harms individuals with records and
jeopardizes the public safety by creating obstacles to employment, housing and education,” says Frazier. The report also notes that Illinois lags behind other states, which criminalize the improper sharing of juvenile records. The commission recommends several changes state lawmakers could make, including getting rid of expungement fees, which
sometimes can cost more than $300 per arrest. Commission chair George Timberlake says changes like that would fall in line with recent state laws that will reduce the number of kids in prison and set up community rehabilitation services. “But Illinois’ treatment of juvenile records is clearly out of step with those principles,” says Timberlake. “And we need revise our
weak confidentiality and restrictive expungement laws that have become barriers to rehabilitation of young lives and a threat to the safety of our communities.” Other suggestions include making the sealing and expunging of these records automatic, a move that’s already been adopted in 12 other states.

Joshua Tree Music Festival Returns May 12-15
By Jackie Devereaux Joshua Tree, CA - The Joshua Tree music festivals are a mini-burning man style of gathering where all day yoga classes loosen you up for a night of music, dancing and fun. It’s where old and young, hippie-style music lovers from all over the world converge for three days of peace and love at the JT RV Lake Campground on May 12-15, 2016. These intimate gatherings in the high desert happens twice a year – the spring festival in May and the fall festival in October. Approximately 5,000 people who share some basic values centered around music but held together by a collective consciousness that is green-eco-oriented and artistically-infused with pop art. This spring’s line up has plenty of world music, funk, hip hop, rock and blues with confirmed bands: Dumstafunk; Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown; Dakabrakha; one of my personal favorites from past festivals, The Main Squeeze;
Sunsquabi; Empresarios; All Good Funk Alliance; Gene Evaro Jr. & the Family; Dani Bell & the Tarantist; the Desert Rhythm Project; and the Cactus Wine Experience. More bands will be confirmed as the date gets closer, but suffice it to say that all music lovers will find these mini-Burning Mans a real joy. Inside the music bowl inside a shaded stretch of campground on the outskirts of the famous national park. The Joshua Tree Music Festivals are produced by a family of friends and funsters convinced that music is the soul of life, and that art enriches and saves lives. The festival is constructed around one music bowl with two alternating stages. “It’s the combination of the magical setting, the music and the people that leads to emphatic moments. We’ve created a space that enables folks to spend more time together with the ability to not miss any of the music.” Those ‘shared experiences’
are where you find the magic,” said promoter Barnett English. “Fans rate us as one of the few festivals that truly caters to the entire family with the addition of Kidsville, an action-packed area filled with activities for children. “There is no ‘nosebleed’ section, white tents, long lines or yellow-jacketed security
details. Instead we find instant community with nonstop interaction as music lovers gather under 30,000 feet of billowing shade cloths flying over the stages and audience. “This intimate musical affair is splashed with golden sunsets and star-filled desert night skies,” Barnett said. of organic food vendors, a global market, funky artists working live on site, and a fully-functional Kidsville area for children to be occupied with various fun and educational games and attractions. For tickets, go to www. joshuatreemusicfestival.com
due to a variety of reasons related to bad policy and mismanagement by US Congress and the Puerto Rican government, such as high taxes and a bloated bureaucracy. The island’s unemployment rate is 12 percent, twice that of mainland US, and the poverty rate is a sky-high 45 percent, three times that of the 50 states. “There’s just a lot of pay for play. When President Obama got elected, he got to appoint 3,000 people. When the government of Puerto Rico was elected, he got to appoint about 5,000 people – in a much, much smaller government,” Dr Salim Furth, a research fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis, told RT. “The government right now isn’t being run to benefit Puerto Rican citizens, the policies they pursue benefit insiders who are already connected to the government.” As a result of this economic hardship, 1,500 Puerto Ricans leave the island every week, because it’s so much easier to get a job on the mainland. “That’s a travesty – it should not be the case that someone who wants to work cannot get a job. Congress and the Puerto
Rican legislature have a responsibility to expand economic freedom so that their citizens can thrive,”Furth said. Federal law prohibits Puerto Rico from restructuring under Chapter 9 of the bankruptcy code, which allows cities and other municipalities to be freed from their debt obligations. Governor Garcia Padilla wanted an exemption to this law to allow for it to enter bankruptcy in this less-strict manner, much as Detroit did in its multibillion-dollar default. The governor had been warning since last year that the island’s massive $70- billiondollar debt is simply impossible to pay off, and asked for an exception to the rules. However, Washington has continued to stand firm against special treatment for the island, a kind of tough love that many believe to be necessary for the island to get back on its feet. “There’s not enough money to go around – everybody understands that there are going to be debt defaults, there’s going to be restructuring, everybody’s going to [feel] some pain here, but the rules shouldn’t be changed,” Furth said. “We can deal with this under existing rules. What’s more important is to get back to economic growth.”

This is the largest default in a series of other bankruptcies, and deepens the island territory’s precarious financial situation. Puerto Rican Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla said in a Sunday afternoon address that he had ordered the territory’s Government Development Bank not to
make certain payments owed on Monday, which adds to a growing list of defaults, saying that Puerto Rico can’t pay its obligations without cutting essential services. “This was a painful decision. We would have preferred to have had a legal framework to restructure our debts in an orderly manner,” Garcia Padilla said. “But faced with the inability to meet the demands of our creditors and the needs of
our people, I had to make a choice. I decided that essential services for the 3.5 million American citizens in Puerto Rico came first.” Moody’s Investor Service reported last week that the island would default on $422 million on Monday, but the Puerto Rican government reached a deal on Friday allowing it to pay $22 million and restructure $30 million. Experts Warn: Don’t Get Buried in Funeral Planning By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee’s State Funeral Board received 75 complaints in 2015 from consumers across the state. Actions varied from preplanning funds not being deposited in the proper accounts to expired licenses. In light of that, the state’s Department of Commerce and Insurance is reminding consumers how they can protect themselves at a time when their guard may be down. Spokeswoman Claire Marsalis says the first thing to do is to ask a friend to serve as a second set of ears and eyes. “You will be emotional,” she points out. “It’s a very traumatic time, so if you
can bring along a friend or a family member that can assist you in the process, just to avoid emotional spending that might pop up.” Before doing business with any funeral home or cemetery, confirm they’re licensed with the state, resist pressures to buy goods and services you don’t really want or need, and avoid emotional overspending. By law, a funeral home must give you a general price list and show a casket price list to anyone who asks in person. The state recommends you read contracts carefully and understand all the provisions. Marsalis says a reputable company shouldn’t leave you wondering if you’re paying more than you should. “Expect ethical treatment,”

By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W. Va. - A new understanding of how trauma changes the brain shows promise of helping with crime, education, health care, even parenting. Marshall University professor of counseling Carol Smith says traumatic injuries can be emotional or physical. She says the bad news is they can change the way someone’s brain chemistry works, and leave them struggling to stay rational through a fog of stress. “They can’t think clearly,” says Smith. “They can not put a sentence together very well. They can’t remember where they put things. Their bodies are reacting to traumatic stress.” Smith says trauma is widespread, in fact by some counts there are more people
wrestling with it than not. Which she says may be one reason complaints of stress are so common. But Smith says the good news is that we know how to treat it, that people can come back. In the past few years, techniques based on the new brain research have begun showing up in all sorts of places. Smith says it often depends on being more self-aware; everything from teaching parents to take a breath before yelling at their children to teaching prisoners yoga or meditation as anger management. “There are a lot of very smart people who believe that mindfulness is the antidote to trauma,” Smith says. “The more we take care of

She says that can work in a lot of cases. But she points out if people are dealing with trauma and are under enough stress, they have a hard time thinking through the consequences of their actions. Smith says those people should be handled differently. “When we look at somebody’s bad behavior, we say ‘What is wrong with you?’ And a better question is to say ‘What is happening with you?’ Or ‘What happened to you,’” says Smith.

Bills to Make Mediation More Consumer-Friendly
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - If you have a credit card or a job, have ever seen a doctor, or needed a nursing home, you’ve probably signed an arbitration agreement that requires you to give up the right to sue, and go through mediation in the event of a dispute. On Tuesday, the California Senate Judiciary Committee passed four bills to make this process more consumer-friendly. State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson says right now, the arbitration process amounts to a private system of justice, in which the deck is stacked against the little guy. “The arbitration system looks like the wild, wild west, says Jackson. “You don’t have to follow the rules of evidence. You don’t necessarily learn all the facts, and arbitrators don’t even have to follow the law. Senate Bill 1007 would give both sides the right to have a certified court reporter present. SB 1078 works to stop companies from hiring their favored mediators again and again by barring mediators from soliciting business during

a case, and requiring them to disclose any marketing they’ve done to attract big companies’ arbitration business. SB 1065 says a nursing home can’t file an appeal to force arbitration in order to delay justice when someone alleges elder abuse. The latter bill is sponsored by Senate Majority
Leader Bill Monning. “It would absolutely preserve the right of a nursing home defendant to appeal a final judgment, says Monning. “It just wouldn’t let them postpone the process in a manner that often results in the death of the claimant before their case can even be heard. Opponents criticize the
bills as too “one size fits all, and say they would have unintended consequences. Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a more comprehensive bill to reform arbitration last year, saying it was too broad. So, this is an attempt to accomplish the same objectives, in a more piecemeal fashion.

HOROSCOPES ARIES
Careful how you interact with others. Do not rely only on possessions and monetary realities (though tending them is important). Rely also on instinct and then intuition to direct and guide you into knowing the quality of a person, event, resource, choice and investment. You will be called to courage, a virtue of the heart and to a deep calmness that results when we one knows all is well. Because you made it so.
TAURUS Be aware that you make impressions on many, leading them to follow your every thought, idea, action and move. Therefore, it’s important to act always with ethics and complete all plans, agreements, promises and agendas. You’re attempting to initiate new projects impacting life far into the future. You may be one of the few able to accomplish this. The future of humanity awaits. Carry on through any obstacles or hindrances.
GEMINI You may feel a sense of tiredness, exhaustion and needing rest. You may also be dreaming at night and while awake. It’s good to create an Esoteric Journal, a Dream Journal, a Retrograde

Journal. Recording your experiences each day. Over time the message of your life emerges. Maintain a light, fresh foods diet, eliminate anything excess, drink pure water, love more, and look to the stars each day for direction.
CANCER It’s important to maintain close connections with like minded group(s) and with the values you find important. See all interactions as opportunities and seek to understand what the hopes, wishes and needs of others are. Know that no matter how life is now, greater community will be available to you and your family later. Careful while walking, lest you stumble. Careful.
LEO Career matters assume new dimensions, co-workers need more care, you want to improve your health, create new work methods and tend to the necessities of your life. Big jobs! You realize this takes balance so you go slower than usual, foregoing adventure in order to create a long-term plan of practical goals. Your greatest success is acceptance of everything present in your life. Then everything shifts.
VIRGO You may be traveling to
teach and/or to study far away this summer. You may be planning meetings, conferences, classrooms and/ or curriculum. You will definitely be communicating with others on a large scale, either personally or through writing, speaking, teleconferencing, conference calling. Some or all of these will occur and all the while you gain knowledge, happiness and goodness. You have an adventure.
LIBRA Are you harboring a secret, perhaps one or more? Is there money or resources you share with another? Is everything clear and aboveboard in this area? It is time to arrange your finances so that debts are paid quickly. These times call you to be frugal, economically prudent, thrifty and careful, thus being able to conserve resources with confidence. Be prepared to teach others very soon in these ways. You will be efficient, informative and illuminating.
SCORPIO Relationships are primary now so listen very carefully to what others are communicating and have the intentions to respond with care, interest and emotional equilibrium. Should you be uncooperative imbalance will ensue and you will feel you have neglected a
responsibility. Direct attention toward others now. Because only from you can they feel special care, love and safety.
SAGITTARIUS You may be creating many and various lists consisting of tasks and errands - cars that need tending, accounts that need reckoning, travels that need considering, responsibilities that need completing, and problems that need easing. Spending time alone will help you complete incomplete projects. You may dream more at night as you travel about in the ethers. Record all dreams. Over time, dreams offer a clear message.
CAPRICORN Setting out each day’s agenda and assessing priorities allows you to have more wisdom and brings a clarity and focus to things routine. Try not to criticize yourself or anyone. Compassion tells us everyone’s doing their very best at different stages of development. New opportunities appear at first as philosophical ideas. Then they become goals. Rest more so you can imagine more. And then create more.
them attention, attempting to improve relationships with family while also improving the beauty and organization of the environments you find yourself in. Do nothing that unsettles your safety or security, challenge no one, and calm tensions with exercise, prayer, vitamins, minerals and herbs. No storing them!
PISCES It’s best to set this year aside to gain better health. A new sense of self identity results from this. With Jupiter in Virgo, you are working with the shadow side of your health (things hidden). As well as your Sun side (things apparent). You feel the need for clear direction and the resources that provide stabilization, constancy and the right sense of home. Sometimes there’s simply the need for silence. Inner and outer silence that let’s us hear, “Be still, and know that all is well.” Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. By Jackie Devereaux Palm Desert, CA - “Terrific, wonderful and excellent” are a few of the words I heard expressed after Friday night’s show of “Victor/Victoria” at the McCallum Theater. I, and my theater-raised husband, Tom, were very impressed by the College of the Desert (COD) production directed by Randy Slovacek with music direction by Darlene Romano. I’m the kind of person who enjoys stories that are edgy and of deep contrasts. This show supplied both ingredients in a big way. The opening scenes introduce Toddy, the gay friend of Victoria, an www.desertstarweekly.com
out of work singer in 1930s Paris. Toddy gets the idea that Victoria can play a man in drag, and convinces a local club owner of the charade. Victoria becomes wildly successful as Victor, and rises to be the toast of Paris as s/he deals with the timely issues of gender identity, gender bending and hiding one’s true self. Complications quickly arise when one fateful night a Chicago mobster in the audience finds himself attracted to the star. The audience watches Victor/ Victoria journey through this musical odyssey first as a madcap misfit who must deal with her own inner struggles

as an artist only to find herself dealing with the complexities of a woman falling in love. Chelsey Clime, a desert native and COD alumni, was absolutely terrific in the lead role of Victor/Victoria Grant. From her first song, “If I Were a Man,” I knew we were in for a treat. Throughout the entire performance Clime keep the fast pace and energy high with her commanding voice and stellar performance. The “Le Jazz Hot” nightclub scene set the fast pace with a flawless dance ensemble. I was very impressed by the operatic voice of Frank Haggard. The minute he opened his mouth May 4, 2016
it was clear he had the best trained voice on stage. The only voice I found off was that from the role of Norma Cassidy, the sleazy, Chicago gangster girlfriend of mobster King Marchan. However, in all truth, that trashy, mid-West accent set her apart from the other actors, and created one of the more notable characters in the performance. So touchee for standing out, Kara Masek. Other notable musical numbers include: “You and Me,” “Almost a Love Song,” “Trust Me,” “Living in the Shadows,” “Paris by Night,” and “Crazy World.” The elaborate sets were
shipped from New York to Palm Springs by special arrangement, and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the absolutely fabulous costumes and makeup The Victor/Victoria stage play is based on the book of the same title by Blake Edwards with music by Henry Mancini, lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and additional music by Frank Wildhorn. Story and Photos by Pat Krause Over 70,000 people enjoyed the 10th anniversary of Stagecoach; another year of diverse, and fantastic music in all its forms. The 3 days of entertainment are unparallel in this Valley. The Indio Polo Grounds is transformed from Coachella Fest Weekends into a country theme. The art works on the grounds is definitely geared to the country fans. There was a huge cowboy boot, that fans crowded around to get selfies. The very large Ferris Wheel can be seen all around the venue and is a way to find the entrance and Exits, the vendors and food booths. There was a long line of vendors selling beer and drinks and foods at one area and other vendors all over selling cowboy hats, belt buckles, removable tattoos, T-Shirts, and memorabilia. Everyone wants a memento of this weekend. Food Vendors sold just about anything from pizza to spring rolls, hot dogs, and everything in between. There were walkways for fans to get into one side or another or to one stage or another. The three stages, Mane, Palomino and Mustang were filled to hear every kind of artist. There was the traditional country, blue grass and a more hip kind of country for everyone’s taste. There were a lot of brand new artists, that are making news in the country scene. Goldenvoice does a great job in
finding the newest talent to highlight. Fans are finding new entertainers that are making their mark in the music world. I noticed there were a lot of younger people along with an older crowd at the more traditional country acts like, Marty Stuart, Emmy Lou Harris, John Fogarty, Lee Ann Womack and the Doobie Brothers. The senior country artists had the largest crowds in the Palomino and Mustang stages. The many fresh artists could be seen on all three stages during the day and creating brand new fans. STAGECOACH OFFERS WEALTH OF AMERICANA, COUNTRY AND ROCK MUSIC IN INDIO By Robert Kinsler If there was one thread that tied together many of performances that I caught at Stagecoach last weekend, it was the spirit of Merle Haggard. While a slew of the performances acknowledged Hag, who passed away April 6, 2016, there was ultimately an even deeper theme of honoring a range of musical heroes and acknowledging the large part that great music plays in the lives of those who journeyed to take in the sights and sounds at California largest country music festival. Here is an overview of the noteworthy performances I caught at the three-day festival, held April 29, 30 and May 1, 2016 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Friday, April 29 While early Friday

performances from Leroy Powell and Aubrie Sellers were entertaining, the first top-tier performance came courtesy of the Malpass Brothers’ 45-minute play in the Palomino tent. The five-member troupe (headed by Christopher and Taylor Malpass) honored musical greats ranging from Hank Williams (a Western Swingflavored “Move It On Over”) and Johnny Cash (a buoyant “Folsom Prison Blues”) to Jimmie Rogers (“California Blues”) to Haggard (an emotive “Sing Me Back Home”). The Malpass Brothers closed their set with several songs rooted celebrating their heroes, including “Man in Black is Wearing White” (a fitting tribute to Johnny Cash). Just as strong was the appearance by Austinbased singer-songwriter
Dale Watson. Backed by a tight trio known as “His Lone Stars,” Watson paid tribute to honky tonk and authentic country music with every note, including the uptempo George Jones-honoring “Jonesin for Jones.” Armed with a rich baritone voice and sharp guitar licks, his 14-song set also featured the retro-styled original “Whiskey or God” and Haggard’s timeless country ballad “Here In Frisco.” Memphis country-punk outfit Lucero was a good fit to perform in the Palomino. Sandwiched in the middle of the previous traditional sets from the Malpass Brothers and Watson, and subsequent sets from legends Robert Earl Keen and Emmylou Harris, the band’s rollicking style was a welcome change of pace. When Voices Meet
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The movie When Voices Meet held a special screening at the Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City on April 27th. Actress Shari Belafonte contacted the Palm Springs Women in Film and Television, PSWIFT, about being a part of this documentary somewhat shot in 1992 in South Africa by Sharon Katz. PSWIFT was excited to agree to host this screening that was such an important event in the turbulent times of apartheid in South Africa. Sharon Katz brought together high-school students for a choir to tour South Africa starting in a city where they thought they might get only a few people attending but ending up getting hundreds for their concert. They started the “Peace Train” where Whites, Blacks, Coloured and Indian students all performed across the country. It was an effort to abolish Aparthied that proved
so successful that they took the Peace Train to the U.S. In a day of segregation it was amazing to see these children live together on the train, eat and sleep in the same place where it was unheard of for the times. They brought 120 students, teachers and administrators to see the film in the morning. Reception for the film was amazing from all attending. It brought to light the fact that Racial Lines can be broken in a good way.
Music is a median where race and creed are brought together for a common goal and there is no racism. The Peace Train traveled across the U.S. for five weeks with over a hundred students, parents, teachers and musicians performing. Sharon Katz is again trying to organize another Peace Train in the U.S. with all races involved for another touring concert of students.
By Desert Star Staff Until now, not all financial advisors in Tennessee and the rest of the country were required to put their clients first, before any investment funds they represent. This month that’s expected to change after the U.S. Department of Labor issued a fiduciary rule, taking full effect in 2018, that requires all financial advisors who give retirement advice to act in the best interest of their clients. Jim Lardner, communications director for Americans for Financial Reform, explains what the problem was. “Brokers, insurance companies, sales people and others can take advantage of loopholes and have taken advantage of loopholes to promote high-commissioned investment products that do very well for them,” he says. “But are not so good for the investor.” This is the first time the rules have been updated in 40 years. Opponents say it
requires excess paperwork and will result in higher costs for investors in the long run. Though the policy hasn’t been mandated by law before now, many reputable investment companies require their advisors to sign a contract committing to act in the best interest of their client. Experts say to protect yourself, ask your advisor if they’ve committed to such a standard. Americans for Financial Reform estimates the lack of consumer protection until now has cost savers more than $17 billion annually. Lardner says financial advisors looking to make extra profits on the backs of their clients can cost big bucks over time. “The cost of this kind of conflicting so-called advice, which is really a sales pitch disguised as advice,” says Lardner. “Can run into the tens of thousands of dollars for an individual worker or retiree.” According to a study
by the Center for American Progress, even a seemingly small extra fee on an investment in a mutual fund

Feds Issue Rule to Protect Retirement Savings can add up over time. A 25 year old, earning $30,000 a year and investing 5 percent of her salary
annually, would end up paying almost $100,000 extra over a lifetime with an extra fee of less than 1 percent.

How to Fix America’s Failing Cybersecurity Capabilities
By Nada Marie Anid Barack Obama just became the first U.S. president to write a line of computer code. The gesture is part of a national push for computer science education. In fact, the White House recently announced a $4 billion “Computer Science for All” initiative that will help educate the next generation of coders. It couldn’t have come soon enough. In addition to playing an increasingly central role in business, computer science know-how is vital to America’s economic and national security. 2015 was the worst year ever for cybercrime, with nearly 1,000 major data breaches. These attacks included the theft of 21.5 million records from the federal government’s Office of Personnel Management and a T-Mobile breach that exposed the names, addresses, and Social Security numbers
of 15 million customers. Efforts to bolster cybersecurity all face the same obstacle: a shortage of talent. Protecting our citizens requires a large-scale effort to attract talented people to the cyber workforce and then train them to meet and thwart modern, unexpected threats. There are currently 209,000 unfilled positions for cybersecurity workers in the United States, according to a Stanford University report. Worldwide, the figure totals roughly 1 million. With cybercriminals growing more sophisticated each day, we need a longterm strategy to close the cybersecurity talent gap. To start, computer science must become a central component of our education system. According to a recent Gallup survey commissioned by Google, less than one third of K-12 teachers and administrators say that
computer science is a top priority for their school. In a survey commissioned by defense contractor Raytheon, 82 percent of millennials reported that no teacher or guidance counselor had ever mentioned the possibility of a job in cybersecurity. Thankfully, some policymakers are attempting to change the status quo. On top of President Obama’s national initiative, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has committed his city’s school system to offering computer science classes to all students within 10 years. Efforts to ignite a passion for cybersecurity careers should give special attention to young women. According to that same Raytheon survey, men are five times more likely to consider a career in cybersecurity than women. Research from a study I’m conducting with colleagues from Cisco and the wider tech community
for an upcoming book called The Internet of Women, supports Raytheon’s findings. Another valuable step would be the creation of a cybersecurity scholarship program. The National Science Foundation already offers funding for degrees related to cybersecurity, provided recipients work for the government upon graduation. What’s needed is a more ambitious scholarship program, similar in scope to the GI Bill. Private-sector businesses such as technology firms and military contractors should establish related initiatives, offering to pay off education loans for students who accept in-house cybersecurity positions. But it won’t be enough to simply encourage more Americans to earn degrees in computer science. Students also need access to tech immersion programs to see
the practical implications of their studies. My own university, New York Institute of Technology, has worked with industry leaders to create internships and other real-world experiences and opportunities. And we’ve dramatically increased our cybersecurity course offerings, hiring expert faculty in biometrics, swarm intelligence, cryptography, data mining and forensics, and network security. We’ve even added a cybersecurity concentration for undergraduates and a master’s program. America faces mounting cyber threats. Only through better funding incentives and hands-on immersive training can we hope to attract more young people to the cybersecurity field. Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D. is dean of the school of engineering and computing sciences at New York Institute of Technology.

E N T E RTA I N M E N T ‘Hamilton’ Garners 16 Tony Nominations BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Lin-Manuel Miranda won the Pulitzer Prize and 2016 Grammy Award for best Best Broadway Musical Album this year. He now has the chance to take home an armload of Tony Awards for his sensational hip-hop Broadway smash-hit “Hamilton.” On Tuesday, May 3rd, when the Tony nominations were announced, the show also made Broadway history by garnering 16 Tony nominations. In the past Mel Brooks hit musical “The Producers” and Britain’s delightful “Billy Elliot” held that honor when they received 15 nominations. “The Producers” went on to win 12 Tonys; “Billy Elliot” took home 10. Will “Hamilton’ top ‘The Producers?” We shall see on June 12 when the awards are presented on CBS. The host will be CBS-TV’s “Late Late Show” host James Corden, who won a Tony in 2012. Producers, performers and other theatre pros make up the 846 eligible voters who will
decide. With 16 nominations, the show has earned nominations in all categories from acting, writing and direction to design. The show, however, will not be able to take home all 16 awards since some cast members will be facing off against one another. Thanks to the show’s phenomenal popularity, Miranda has also made American youth aware of an important part of American history, which is often overlooked in present day studies. So kudos all around. And, another piece of good news. We will get the chance to enjoy “Hamilton” when it comes to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre August 11 through December 30, 2017. On May 30, 2016, “The Book of Mormon” returns to the Pantages for an extended run. This show was another big Tony winner. It was nominated for 14 Tony Awards and won 9. As you can see by this lineup, the Pantages is the way to go
By Desert Star Staff MIAMI, -- Carnival Corporation the world’s largest leisure travel company, sailed into Havana this morning completing the first leg of its historic inaugural voyage to Cuba that began on May 1, 2016, from Miami. The company’s 10th and newest brand, Fathom, made history today with its arrival into Havana, marking the first time in over 50 years that a U.S. cruise line has sailed from the U.S. to Cuba. It is also the first time in decades that Cuban-born individuals have been able to travel by sea to or from Cuba. Fathom travelers were greeted by fanfare and a festive celebration as they arrived in the Port of Havana, the first of three destinations that guests will visit as part of the brand’s exclusive seven-night voyages to Cuba. Following this week’s inaugural trip to Cuba, Fathom’s 704-passenger Adonia luxury cruise ship will begin operating its weeklong itineraries to Cuba every other week. “Our arrival today in Havana is a special moment in history that contributes to a more positive future, and we congratulate our colleague Arnie Perez on being the first person born in Cuba to step ashore under Cuba’s new policy,” said Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation. “We are so honored that Carnival Corporation and our Fathom brand can be part of
such a meaningful milestone. As we worked to become the first U.S. cruise company to sail from the U.S. to Cuba in more than five decades, it was clear just how much interest there is from travelers who want to experience Cuba. We believe there is no better way to experience Cuba and see this beautiful island than to cruise with us on Fathom, and we look forward to providing a very special and rewarding experience to everyone who sails with us.” “We are extremely excited and very humbled by this historic opportunity to give Fathom travelers an exclusive chance to experience Cuba, which is a unique destination unlike anywhere else in the world,” said Tara Russell, president of Fathom and global impact lead for Carnival Corporation. Russell added: “Our guests are now able to visit three beautiful destinations on the island all in one week, with the convenience of only having to unpack once while we sail on the Fathom Adonia, our premium small ship with its excellent and diverse dining, service and accommodations. Cuba is a beautiful island with great people and a rich history and culture, and we are so excited we are the first U.S. cruise line that will be giving travelers the opportunity to enjoy Cuba with all the comforts and convenience of being on board our ship. We look forward to making

TN Booster Club Accused of Paying Coaches Under the Table
By Desert Star Staff A Rutherford County high school booster club paid out almost $100,000 in gift cards and cash over a four-year period in numerous unauthorized transactions, according to an investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office. John Dunn, spokesman for the office, described what investigators found,
which has since been turned over to the county district attorney to determine if any laws were broken. “What we found,” Dunn said, “was that the Blackman High School Football Booster Club basically opened a second account for the purposes of paying their coaches pretty much on the side in a way to circumvent a policy that required
them to make those payments through the central office.” In a statement, the Rutherford County School District said Blackman High School’s principal reported “questionable accounting issues related to the football booster club program” shortly after she became principal of the school in 2014. The school district notified the state comptroller of the allegations immediately and has complied fully with the state’s investigation. Dunn said booster club leaders say they were acting under the direction of the school’s athletic department.
“Booster Club officials really told us that that action was directed by their former head football coach, who resigned in March of last year,” Dunn said. “Booster Club officials told us the coach was actually telling them who to write checks to and then to provide that cash to those folks.” The Comptroller’s Office doesn’t investigate booster clubs unless there is an allegation of fraud, Dunn said, adding that his office has been investigating such complaints with more regularity in recent years.

A Mother’s Day story
By Jessica Martin, Mother Mother’s Day 2012 is a day our family will not soon forget. Leena and Brielle Martin were born at 25 weeks, after four weeks of hospital bed rest- they weighed just 1lb 12oz and 1lb 10oz. Both of our girls have been fighters from the very beginning. On several occasions, we were told to prepare for the worst, but both of our girls had continued to fight. They had a long, hard stay in the NICU that included nitric oxide therapy, laser eye surgery, nissen fundoplication, and gastronomy tube placement among many other procedures. They fought through it all, enduring a 156-day stay at Kaiser Fontana; through the help of an amazing medical staff and the support of family and friends—we were finally able to bring our babies home. Watching the two of them grow has been our greatest joy. Since coming home, we have had some setbacks and are still reminded of their
premature birth daily— due to their need to use G-tubes for nutrition. Although, we know our girls will continue overcome these obstacles just as the many others that have also been put in their paths. We know how lucky we are to have our daughters and realize the importance of March of Dimes’ role in saving babies’ lives. We have marched for three years, and this is a mission that will always be close to our hearts.
