Beautiful downtown Palm Springs attracted 70,000 to 80,000 participants over the two-day pride festival. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Gay Pride Parade grows bigger each year with greater and larger crowds. It was estimated that over 140,000 people came to be part of this Pride Weekend. There were a lot more people than that amount that came to watch the parade with their children and dogs. Many more events were planned during the whole
weekend this year. Additionally parties and mixers for the gay community and others that wanted to participate in this once a year event. The week started on Friday Nov. 6th with pool parties and meets and greets affairs. The big parade was on Sunday Nov. 8th at 10 in the morning. People started lining the streets for the parade very early to get a prime spot.
Some set up tents for shade and many brought chairs to be comfortable while they waited. The parade had the usual floats, bands, dogs and people in costume. There were vendors that walked the parade route selling hats, necklaces, flags and umbrellas. One group has set up for the last six years providing water and food free to the public in honor of The Bear.

Businesses set up specials for the crowds. One of the restaurants provided a speaker, Sasha, on a microphone to give a blow-by-blow announcement of all the parade participants coming down the road. Police on motorcycles cruised the route to keep the people attending safe. Participants gave out beads, pencils, keepsakes, and fans to keep cool and bags of
Moon Wins PS Mayor, Kors and Roberts on PS Council and Matas for DHS Mayor By Desert Star Staff The winds of change have swept through the Coachella Valley elections: Robert Moon sails to victory as the new mayor of Palm Springs. Geoff Kors and J.R. Roberts win for PS City Council. Scott Matas wins for DHS mayor. Betts triumphs with his third consecutive 4-year term, and young rising star Anayelli
Zavala captures her first Desert Hot Springs city council seat. Former mayor Yvonne Parks as the third-highest vote-getter in the crowd can claim the vacated seat of Scott Matas for the next 2-years. This is not the first close mayoral race in the City of Desert Hot Springs; two years ago Sanchez beat then mayor Yvonne
Parks with a handful of votes. All provisional votes have been counted. Of course, the candidates could request a recount. The Final Official Election Results are now certified. The last day to request a recount is November 16, 2015 at 5pm. Continues on Page 11

Art Garfunkel at the Fantasy Springs Casino
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The legendary Art Garfunkel from the iconic duo, Simon and Garfunkel, gave an amazing solo concert at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Spa in the Special Events Center on November 7th. Garfunkel came on stage about 15 minutes late, but that gave latecomers a chance to get seated. Garfunkel appeared on stage with only one guitarist and a keyboardist. Art said he was so happy to be here. He mentioned that he had lost his voice a few years ago and was thrilled to say his voice had returned. His songs have a mellow quality, and he still has his unique voice. Someone in the audience yelled, Happy Birthday Art, and he remarked he had a birthday just a couple of days ago. Everyone chimed in order to sing Happy Birthday to him. Someone else yelled for him to sing a certain song, but he said it was not one that he had planned on singing. Art said he would be singing some of the songs from the Simon and Garfunkel period but would also be singing some songs from the American Songbook like “Someone to Watch Over Me”. Art said he has recorded 12 solo albums and
wanted to sing one from the 11th album, Precious Moments. Garfunkel would sing a couple of songs and then read his thoughts that he wrote down on paper like a Bio. The words were like poetry that had not been put down to music. He said that he would find some emotional experience that would make him put his thoughts into words. He liked beautiful, and he liked the tie he was wearing and turned that beautiful emotion into words. An amazing guitarist, Tab Laven, accompanied Art. The two made beautiful music together with the aid of music by a keyboardist. The audience clapped after each song, but the clapping was the loudest when he sang his hits from the 60s and 70s. Few people know that he is an avid walker. He has walked across the U.S. and Japan on foot. He also branched out into acting and still does some acting today. He and Paul Simon broke up in 1970 but unite occasionally. Art is proud of the songs they created jointly that have lasted through time. The Duo, Simon and Garfunkel, garnered many Grammy and awards during their years with each other.

private life. Ideally, people in the military should start planning at least two years before they expect to hang up their uniforms, so the following are key moves to make if you’re still in the service, as well as resources to consult once you’ve left. By creating a transition fund, you create a cash cushion. Being accustomed to a stable source of income, may be a strain when returning to private life. The postmilitary job search may take longer than you think. You should have enough to cover six to nine months of living expenses. Start by putting at least 10% of each paycheck into a liquid account, such as a money-market fund or high-yield savings account. If you own a home, apply now for a home-equity line of credit, which can be a good fallback source of cash and will be easier to qualify for while you’re still in the service. Keep in mind that you are not charged interest on this account unless you use it. Having a good credit score (FICO) of 700 plus can help in your job hunt and your ability to get a low-rate loan. Employers check credit scores as a part of their hiring process. Activeduty military personnel and their spouses can get free copies of their FICO score (saveandinvest. org). Also check your credit report at AnnualCreditReport. com and fix any mistakes. Your score can be significantly improved by reducing your debt

One of the greatest assets for veterans is a VA mortgage. Even if your credit isn’t perfect, you can buy a house with a loan backed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In today’s low interest rate environment, a V.A. loan may not require a down payment, with interest rates of about 4%, and lower closing costs. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: What penalty, if any, is imposed on a management company which does not disclose to the boards of their clients whether or not their manager is certified? I know of a company that does not do this. D.L., Livermore Dear D. L.: The requirement that a manager annually disclose whether or not they are “certified” under the Business & Professions Code is found at Business & Professions Sections 1150011506. Manager certification is important, because it is an indicator of how much time the person has invested in their career as a professional
community manager. Several organizations, including the Community Associations Institute, offer credentials that qualify a manager to call themselves “certified”. [See past column #60]. Interestingly the Business & Professions Code section requiring disclosure does not specifically state the penalty for failing to make this disclosure. However such a practice could be considered an “unfair business practice” under Business & Professions Code 17200, and even be the basis of a lawsuit. Managers should be making this disclosure annually, as required, and association boards should insist upon it. Certification is not a guarantee of good management expertise – but it can be an important indicator. If your manager has not taken the time to become a Certified Common Interest Development Manager, ask why. Drug Company raised life-saving pill’s price by 5,000%
By Desert Star Staff The Senate’s Special Committee on Aging wants to know more about how four drug manufacturers came to raise prices of their products. One of the companies, Turing Pharmaceutical, hiked the price of a rare pill by 5,000 percent.
Led by Chairwoman Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri), the panel sent letters to Turing Pharmaceuticals, as well as Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Retrophin Inc, and Rodelis Therapeutics.
“The sudden, aggressive price hikes for a variety of drugs used widely for decades affect patients and health care providers and the overall cost of health care,” Collins said in a statement. Also on Wednesday, House Democrats from the
investigative committee asked their Republican counterparts to hold a vote on whether to sue Valeant and Turing. Turing made a big splash in the news in September when it raised the cost of a toxoplasmosis drug by 5000 percent. The price of the antiinfective medication known as Daraprim, which is used to treat AIDS and cancer patients, went from $13.50 per pill to $750 in one fell swoop. Meanwhile, Valeant upped its blood pressure treatment’s price over 600 percent in February. They say higher profits lead to better access for patients and progress in creating newer, better medical care. The companies’ stock prices haven’t been going up though. Retrophin’s stock tumbled 14 percent while Valeant lost 2 percent after the government investigations were announced. The Senate panel’s letter to Valeant Chief Executive
Mike Pearson mentions several cases of price hikes for drugs that concerned them. The high blood pressure drug Nitropress’ price shot up 625 percent to $1,346.62 per vial. Isuprel, a heart medicine, went up 820 percent, costing $36,811 for 25 pills. Cuprimine, a rheumatoid arthritis capsule, jumped 2,949 percent in price to $26,189 for 100. “The cost of development and acquisition and complexities in the health care cost reimbursement system,” goes into the cost of the medication, Valeant spokeswoman Laurie Little emailed Reuters. Retrophin’s kidney disease drug, Thiola, which went from $1.50 to $30 a tablet, is the subject of another Senate panel letter. The investigative committee wants to know more about what it takes to manufacture the drug and what’s in it, to see if the price change was justified.
By Carlos Herrera PALM DESERT, Ca. -A new hotel is soon coming to the desert’s most popular shopping district and people are excited about the changes it could bring. Hotel Paseo will be opening in Palm Desert and will be opening its doors in early 2017. The new hotel will sit in the heart of the famous shopping destination, El Paseo. According to the city, the hotel will help create a vibrant, walkable downtown. The new four-star, 150-room hotel is the first of its kind on El Paseo. It’s a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel which will feature a pool, spa, dining and ballroom. A restaurant and a meeting room will also be part of the new construction. Palm Desert city officials celebrated the groundbreaking for the new hotel on Friday morning. According to the city, the hotel will be opening in two years and will be located on El
Paseo and Larkspur Lane, right across The Gardens on El Paseo. The hotel will boost the city’s economy with 200 permanent jobs and by attracting tourists, experts said. People are excited about having a hotel right on El Paseo. “We need a hotel right here where people can enjoy El Paseo, they can walk right out do shopping, get great food, enjoy the weather and not have to get into a car,” Palm Desert resident Sue McCall said. Many argue the hotel will attract even more tourists. “I think it could bring some good people. They get to look at this awesome new boutique hotel opening up in a fancy area on El Paseo and people are going to shop and visit us,” Palm Desert resident Landon Morris said. According to city officials, they had been planning the project for years to improve one of Palm Desert’s major attraction. “This gets somebody
the opportunity to now actually stay right within steps of that shopping district,” City of Palm Desert’s Economic Development Manager Ruth Ann Monroe said. Hotel Paseo guests will
enjoy a comfortable stay and El Paseo’s boutiques, galleries and restaurants, she said. Westwood-based architectural firm Gene Fong & Associates designed the hotel,

wrongdoing is alleged, people have to go to mediation rather than to court. The clauses are everywhere these days tucked into the fine print for credit cards, loans, cable contracts, doctor visits, online sales, and even nursing homes. Elise Sanguinetti, secretary with the American Association for Justice and president-elect with the Consumer Attorneys of America, says there’s a lot people can do to fight back. “First is to pressure their elected officials to pass the Arbitration Fairness Act and demand that the Consumer
Financial Protection Bureau issue rules to ban forced arbitration in financial contracts; and that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid ban forced arbitration against nursing homes,” says Sanguinetti. Supporters of mandatory arbitration say it cuts down on frivolous lawsuits. Senator Al Franken of Minnesota reintroduced a bill to ban arbitration clauses in certain contracts earlier this year, but it hasn’t come to a vote. Franken says he wants to stop corporate interests from taking advantage of consumers, many of whom
don’t realize they’ve signed away their rights. “These guys are bad guys,” says Franken “It’s about the right of people to go to court. It’s in the Constitution. It’s in two amendments in the Bill of Rights.” The New York Times investigation found four out of five federal cases that went to arbitration between 2010 and 2014 were decided in favor of the company. And it found that a coalition of credit card companies and retailers has been strategizing for a decade to block class-action lawsuits.

Northern Calif. Water Deal Needs Speedy Nod from Congress
By Desert Star Staff YREKA, Calif. - A decade of negotiations between more than 40 parties for water rights, river health and salmon survival expires at the end of December if Congress doesn’t approve it. And Congress may be the biggest challenge yet for the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement, which covers water use in northern California and southern Oregon. At last week’s White House Tribal Nations Conference, Kathy Hill – a member of the Klamath Tribal Council who was on the negotiating team for the agreement – said she heard mixed views about the future of the agreement. “[U.S. Interior Secretary] Sally Jewell was optimistic, said Hill. “But then another person, not with the administration, told me, ‘You know, nothing’s going to get through this House this year.’ And that’s the mood, I think maybe, in Washington, D.C. At the conference, President Obama said he’s committed to working with tribal nations to protect natural resources
and honor their heritage. But Hill wonders if members of Congress unfamiliar with the years of struggle between water users in this area understand the importance of the agreement. The Senate bill (SB 133) is stalled, and a companion House bill has yet to be introduced by Oregon Congressman Greg Walden, although he has said it’s a priority. Brian Johnson, California and Klamath director for Trout Unlimited, made the point that, if nothing else, the people representing these districts won’t want to see a repeat of the “water wars of past decades. “We know that all four of the senators in California and Oregon support the legislation. And so, we’re just hoping that they can deliver on that and get it done on this short timeline, said Johnson. The agreement calls for removal of four older dams in the region. If it expires, however, PacifiCorp could upgrade and relicense the dams instead, passing the costs on to ratepayers in a half-dozen states. Greg Addington, executive

deal and we’re still committed to that outcome, if the agreement goes forward, Addington said. “We don’t want to go back and do this all over again; we don’t
even know if we can do it all over again. We’ve really tried to convey that sense of urgency to Congress. Hopefully, they hear us.

SeaWorld says it will end orca shows in San Diego
By Julie Watson And Mike Schneider SAN DIEGO (AP) SeaWorld will end orca shows at its San Diego park after visitors at the tourist attraction made it clear they prefer seeing killer whales act naturally rather than doing tricks, the company’s top executive said Monday. CEO Joel Manby told investors the park - where the iconic “Shamu” show featuring killer whales doing flips and other stunts debuted decades
ago - will offer a different kind of orca experience focusing on the animal’s natural setting and behaviors, starting in 2017. Animal rights activists called the move a marketing gimmick and want the company to phase out holding any whales in captivity. “An end to SeaWorld’s tawdry circus-style shows is inevitable and necessary, but it’s captivity that denies these farranging orcas everything that is natural and important to them,”
said Jared Goodman of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. “This move is like no longer whipping lions in a circus act but keeping them locked inside cages for life.” The Orlando, Florida-based company has seen revenue drop since the 2013 release of the documentary “Blackfish” that examined how orcas respond to captivity. It chronicles the case of Tilikum, a killer whale that caused the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010
by pulling her into a pool at SeaWorld Orlando. Attendance has dropped the most at the San Diego location, and the decision to end orca shows will be limited for now to that park, the original home of Shamu, its first orca. The shows will continue at the other two SeaWorld parks in San Antonio and Orlando. The killer whale shows at the Shamu stadium in San Diego were the park’s main draw in the 1970s and helped build SeaWorld as a top tourist attraction. Trainers would ride the whales in the giant pool before getting out and signaling for the orca to slap its tail in the water to splash spectators in a “splash zone.” After Brancheau’s death, trainers stopped going in the water during the shows, but they continue to swim with the killer whales while training them. Manby told investors Monday that Califor nia customers want to see less theatrical production, so the new attraction will have a strong conservation message. “They want the orca experience to be activities the whales do in the wild,” Manby said. “Things they perceive as tricks, they don’t like as well.” However, that’s not “universal across our properties,” he added.
The news came days after SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. reported its third-quarter earnings missed Wall Street expectations. SeaWorld earlier this year announced plans for a $100 million expansion of the killer whale tanks in San Diego to boost attendance, but the California Coastal Commission made approval of the project, dubbed “Blue World,” contingent on SeaWorld agreeing not to breed, transfer or sell any of its captive orcas at the park. Manby called the ruling which SeaWorld plans to fight in court - a bad precedent for not only SeaWorld but all zoos and aquariums. He indicated to investors that the company might shelve the San Diego project. “We certainly know with the regulatory environment out there that happened with orcas, and some of what happened in California, with the reputation out there, I think we would be foolish if we didn’t look at other options,” Manby said. He announced that the company is considering adding hotels at its parks, starting with San Diego, to attract overnight visitors. SeaWorld has reached an agreement with a hotel developer to embark on the exploratory phase. Source KMIR
Activists say ending SeaWorld orca shows not enough
By Julie Watson and Mike Schneider SAN DIEGO (AP) - Animal rights activists applauded SeaWorld’s plans to end its orca shows at its San Diego Park but said the company should phase out its captivity of killer whales altogether. SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. announced Monday that it will end orca shows at its San Diego park after visitors at the tourist attraction made it clear they prefer seeing killer whales act naturally rather than doing tricks. CEO Joel Manby told investors the park - where the iconic “Shamu” show featuring killer whales doing flips and other stunts debuted decades ago - will offer a different kind of orca experience focusing on the animal’s natural setting and behaviors, starting in 2017. California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, who plans to introduce federal legislation to end captive orca breeding, said ending the shows is a good first step but doesn’t go far enough. “The fact still remains that as long as SeaWorld holds orcas in captivity, the physical and psychological problems associated with their captivity will persist,” he said. Trainers would ride the whales in the giant pool before getting out and signaling for the orca to slap its tail in the water to splash spectators in a “splash zone.” After Brancheau’s death, trainers stopped going in the water during the shows, but they continue to swim with the killer whales while training them. Manby told investors Monday that California customers want to see less theatrical production, so the new attraction will have a strong conservation message. “They want the orca experience to be activities the whales do in the wild,” Manby said. “Things they perceive as

The news came days after SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. reported its third-quarter earnings missed Wall Street expectations. SeaWorld earlier this year announced plans for a $100 million expansion of the killer whale tanks in San Diego to boost attendance, but the California Coastal Commission made approval of the project, November 11, 2015
dubbed “Blue World,” contingent on SeaWorld agreeing not to breed, transfer or sell any of its captive orcas at the park. Manby called the ruling which SeaWorld plans to fight in court - a bad precedent for not only SeaWorld but all zoos and aquariums. He indicated to investors that the company might shelve the San Diego project. “We certainly know with the regulatory environment out there that happened with orcas, and some of what happened in
California, with the reputation out there, I think we would be foolish if we didn’t look at other options,” Manby said. He announced that the company is considering adding hotels at its parks, starting with San Diego, to attract overnight visitors. SeaWorld has reached an agreement with a hotel developer to embark on the exploratory phase. Source KMIR/AP

Yellowstone Grizzlies’ Fate Debated
By Desert Star Staff JACKSON, Wy. - Dozens of citizens took to the podium at a meeting of federal, state and tribal agencies in Jackson this week to denounce a plan to take Yellowstone-area grizzlies off the federal endangered species list. The Ye l l o w s t o n e subcommittee of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee has recommended the delisting. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service says the bear population has rebounded and the states of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana are clamoring for a return of state control. But Bonnie Rice, senior representative with the Greater Yellowstone Northern Rockies for the Sierra Club, says delisting the bears and letting the states decide their fate would threaten full recovery. “All three states do plan to immediately initiate a trophy hunt for grizzly bears if they are delisted,” she says. “And we feel that these bears should not be

The population can’t sustain a trophy hunt.” Rice says the grizzly bears in Yellowstone are under stress because their primary food sources, whitebark pine and cutthroat trout, have declined in recent years. She says the bears are replacing their normal diet with
elk carcasses and livestock leading to more conflict with hunters and ranchers. “We’re seeing a lot of troubling signs here that the population isn’t growing and it’s still isolated. The number of conflicts is up,” says Rice. “This year, we’re probably going to top the record in terms of the
mortalities of grizzly bears primarily from human-related causes.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to release a proposal to delist the grizzlies in the next few months. There will be a public comment period and then a final decision in 2016.

PALM DESERT The Park After Dark: The
Introducing Chef Daniel Villanueva cooking at the Balisage Bistro – Palm Springs, California. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Chef Daniel has been cooking with flair and a firm dedication to fine dining for more than 20 years. By Desert Star Staff SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., – When it comes to introducing new trends to the culinary scene, California leads the way. California’s rich agriculture, foodie culture and ethnically diverse population are impacting the American palate and influencing the way we eat. In recognition of this rich heritage, the California Milk Processor Board (CMPB), creator of the iconic got milk? Campaign, has launched a new statewide advertising campaign that taps into Californians’ leading sense of adventure and discovering the next food trend. Entitled “Food Loves Milk,” the campaign highlights milk’s essential role in food pairings from the classically traditional such as milk + peanut butter and jelly – to new pleasingly bold pairings that reflect the popularity of fusion cuisine and the mainstreaming of ethnic foods. “The new ‘Food Loves Milk’ campaign showcases milk’s versatility and unique ability to complement a range www.desertstarweekly.com
of exciting flavors, from savory to spicy to sweet,” said Steve James, executive director of the CMPB. “For generations, milk has had a healthy relationship with food, pairing perfectly with traditional favorites. These new innovative milk pairings, created by California chefs, offer a delicious new way to enjoy milk while celebrating California’s rich and evolving culinary heritage.” “It’s widely accepted that adding an unexpected ingredient – such as a touch of salt to watermelon – can enhance flavors in notable ways,” added James. “We’ve applied that same principle to milk and our new food pairings. Whether you’re enjoying a rich peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or spicy eggs with sriracha, a refreshing glass of milk is the ultimate pairing beverage.” Hailing from a wide range of culinary backgrounds, California chefs created milk pairings that include Ricotta Pancakes, paired perfectly with a glass of milk for a satisfying breakfast from Mario Sabatini
of Santa Monica’s Italian Forma; a savory Korean Fried Chicken from Dennis Lee of Namu Gaji in San Francisco, and a delectable Mexican Chocolate Bread Pudding from Isabel Cruz of Isabel’s Cantina in San Diego. Fat is Back: These tasty milk pairings have more going for them than just flavor – in fact new research suggests that fat naturally occurring in food, such as the type found in milk, may enhance the appeal of some foods by adding to the overall sensory profile. And while the ever-changing world of food and health has seen trends come and go – from Cronuts to the fat phobia craze– a more moderate view is coming back into favor. No wonder experts are predicting “fat is back.” While scientists have thought for years that fat provides texture to food but no taste, research published in the journal Chemical Senses debunks this theory suggesting that humans can indeed taste fat. Not only does fat play an important role in our diet, providing satiety benefits, but November 11, 2015
according to research lead professor Richard Mattes, director of the Ingestive Behavior Research Center at Purdue University, fat may be the new “sixth” taste sense, adding to the five established taste senses– sweet, salty, savory, bitter and umami. The finding could explain why fatfree foods are not as satisfying as the full-fat versions. Food Loves Milk: Naturally delicious, a glass of milk – in varieties ranging from whole to skim – is linked to good nutrition making it a beverage you can feel good about serving at every meal. “An 8-ounce glass of milk provides 9 essential nutrients, including 8 grams of high-quality protein. The protein in milk, as well as the fat in the nonskim varieties, helps increase satiety, or a feeling of fullness, which is beneficial for weight management and overall meal satisfaction,” says Patricia Banan, MS, RDN, author of Eat Right When Time is Tight.

HOROSCOPES ARIES
You become deeply intuitive, your business sense soars, especially when working with another, unusual, yet this is how one moves forward. If passions ebb and flow, at times ceasing, it’s because you’re assessing which path to take, which behaviors are beneficial, and what resources are most effective. Your daily work in the world becomes more potent. Add love to all you do as your powerful will can either destroy or create.
TAURUS You must tend and listen more to your partner, close associates, those you love. Invitations for closeness are spoken. But you may not be hearing them. When we don’t listen deeply, we lose the essence of the contact and relationship. If you are seeking closeness then offer listening, ask questions. What do you want from your partner(s)? When there is no deep listening in relationships, everyone becomes physically drained. Tend carefully to personal health and the health of all relationships.
GEMINI Your spirit needs art, beauty, harmony and expressions of creativity each day lest you become dry as a thistle in the desert’s heat. Do not gamble. Those who do will have moments

of prosperity but they’re as fleeting as tumbleweed. You are many things. The flirt, the lover, the loved one who walks away at a moment’s notice. Constancy will be learned someday. When another walks away. We always learn through suffering.
CANCER Do you know others care for you will be available when you’re in need? It’s important to, in turn, nurture all associations and interactions in your life. Then care from others becomes a reality. Do you feel separated from certain associates or friends or daily life schedules? It’s hard to share and be close from afar. Sometimes we create distance from the ways we think about others. It is difficult to overcome this. Make your love into an art form.
LEO When you leave home it’s for a very short time. Home is most important now. Careful with sharp implements like knives and tools. They become dangerous if not handled with awareness. With discipline you can now prepare your body for utmost fitness through dietary, yoga, tai chi and exercise choices. Previous travels, times and friends far away are in your thoughts. Careful with things (including finances) shared with others. Don’t be confused. Be just.
VIRGO Be conservative with money and resources for later that money and those resources will be needed. Should some material necessity arise that is expensive do purchase it. Should someone be in great need help them (tithing). Both choices can occur simultaneously. Social interactions with others are important. Should there be no one around, speak with the garden devas (angels). Speak of your cooperation with them. Eventually they respond.
LIBRA Are you feeling overworked and overextended? Is there a wound you’re tending? Are you easily tired, sleeping less and awakening before dawn? Do you sense the need for either a new home or a house renovation? Are you planning the holiday season? Use resources already accumulated. They are beautiful and enough to make the coming season one of beauty, reflecting the light of your generosity. Rest more.
SCORPIO Is your heart on your sleeve, in the air, acting like a shooting star attempting to connect? Yet you stand behind the curtain, a bit fearful of revealing to others your vulnerabilities, wants, needs, desires and aspirations. Realize
you’re trying to connect so love is released. Love underlies the entire world of events. However that fact is hidden until you reveal it. Why you? Because you’re the disciple and humanity, the potential world disciple, needs a mentor and a guide.
SAGITTARIUS Parts of you are shy about intimacy. It hides behind your sense of adventure, traveling here and there, being cheery even in times of stress. It hides behind your laughter, which erupts in times of pain and crisis. Amidst your love of food and adventures, a call to duty, a vocation into service, is searching for you. Each crisis leads them closer. One day a door will open, with you walking through it. The unobtainable becomes the obtained. Patience. Keep searching for word clues.
CAPRICORN You have the ability at this time to organize social events that become areas of art, creativity, healing and comfort for both yourself and others. Your sense of justice, ethics and aspiration to serve others allows you to comfort and counsel those who mourn, those in need, unnoticed, unseen, overlooked and left out. Slowly your personal power and capabilities for doing good are recognized. Each opportunity reveals another.
Continue up the ladder. It leads to the stars.
AQUARIUS Your imagination will give rise to great ideas helping you feel confident, successful and expanded where beforehand you felt held back. Freedom is available to you now. Allow your heart to speak. Not only your desires but your heart. Tell the truth about how you feel. Speak of your needs, hopes, wishes and truths. These make you authentic. Those in touch with their hearts will recognize you. And help you. Then love happens.
PISCES In years to come, a group project will begin to manifest. It will have profound effects upon humanity. The seeds have been planted and although you feel impatience the project seems not to have manifested, it is growing in unseen ways. Gather flower and vegetable seeds wherever you are. Plant them everywhere, in fields and meadows and small patches of soil. Share them with others. This metaphor (seeds) carries you forward with courage, surety and stillness. Trump’s ‘SNL’ appearance wins viewers, not critics By David Bauder NEW YORK (AP) - “Saturday Night Live” earned the expected ratings benefit of an episode hosted by Donald Trump but, given the protests and vicious panning the show received, NBC has to wonder if it was all worthwhile. From a pure business viewpoint, the Nielsen company said Saturday’s show had its highest rating since January 2012 in the nation’s top 56 markets, all the way back to an episode featuring Charles Barkley and Kelly Clarkson. A viewership estimate taking the nation as a whole into account won’t be available until Thursday. Latino organizations protested the booking for the same reason that NBC cut ties to its former “Celebrity Apprentice” host last summer: the presidential candidate’s comments about Mexicans crossing the border into the United States illegally. That led one of the show’s highlights: Larry David shouting “you’re a racist” to Trump, in reference to an advocacy group’s offer of $5,000 to someone who heckled the host. Trump’s appearance as host despite the corporate

decision to back away from him spoke to both the autonomy of “Saturday Night Live” executive producer Lorne Michaels and Trump’s proven ability to draw an audience. Sure, Trump earned ratings, but viewers who tuned in were punished with “a joyless, unfunny show, which ended in a curtain call with Mr. Trump and the cast that played like a hostage video,” wrote critic James Poniewozik of The New York Times. That conclusion typified a brutal critical response. Both Poniewozik and Time magazine’s Daniel D’Addario pulled out the phrase “anodyne” - fancy word for bland. “Forget Iowa voters,” D’Addario wrote. “It’s hard to imagine the 90 minutes NBC aired getting much of a reaction out of anyone.” The “anemic and halfhearted dud” heavily taxed the show’s integrity, wrote Hank Stuever of The Washington Post. Although it’s not the first time “Saturday Night Live” has had a political host, several critics expressed alarm at the comedy show’s co-opting a figure it would seem more comfortable satirizing from afar. Some jokes poked fun at Trump and his

When Vanessa Bayer’s character cracked about not wanting to be in a sketch where the comic conceit was Trump “tweeting” mean comments November 11, 2015
about the actors, Stuever said it didn’t feel like a joke. “The show’s writers also dropped the ball - or simply never felt like playing to begin with,” he wrote. “Who can blame them? They never should have been put in this position.” For “Saturday Night Live,” it was also a missed opportunity. The show frequently regenerates itself and now has a relatively young cast; this represented a
chance to reel in more casual viewers. Then again, what’s one misfire in the context of a 40-year-old show? Critics may not be happy, but NBC accountants certainly are, said television analyst Marc Berman. “It’s not going to hurt the show,” Berman said. “It’s got everybody talking about it again.”Source: KMIR/AP www.desertstarweekly.com
Playboy Swings: Fun Facts
By Desert Star Staff Did you know? Playboy Magazine debuted in December 1953 with Marilyn Monroe on the cover. But did you know that first issue also contained a feature on the Dorsey Brothers? The Playboy interview has included all the great musicians from The Beatles to Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa. In 1957, the legendary PLAYBOY Music Poll first appeared in the magazine
as a jazz-oriented feature. Playboy has been the source of much landmark jazz on records. In 1957 and 1958, the company produced Volumes I & II (two record sets) of its Playboy Jazz All-Star series, spotlighting a host of jazz legends from Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Erroll Garner to Jack Teagarden, Dave Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan and more. The first of the famed PLAYBOY interviews was trumpet great Miles Davis in
September 1962. That interview was conducted by a then littleknown writer named Alex Haley. Did you know that Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand both performed at the Playboy Club before they were-famous? Among John Lennon’s last interviews was the one he did for Playboy Magazine. The magazine hit newsstands on December 6, 1980, two days before Lennon was killed. The first Playboy Jazz Festival was a three-day concert event that took place in Chicago Stadium, August 7th – 9th, 1959. Performers for that first Festival included Count Basie and his Orchestra (with vocalist Joe Williams), The Dave Burbeck Quartert, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley. Oscar Petterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Red Nichols, Jack Teagarden, Sonny Rollins, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Music critic Leonard Feather called the first Playboy Jazz Festival, “One of the greatest weekends in the history of jazz.” The Playboy Festival drew more than 68,000 fans at a top dollar price of $5.50 for five shows. A three-record set produced by Playboy based on the first Festival was a smash hit that has since become a treasured collector’s item. On October 24, 1959, the television show Playboy’s Penthouse hosted by Hugh Hefner premiered. Guests included: Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy Greco, Stan Kenton, Mabel Mercer, Anita O’Day, Peter Seeger, and George Wein.
The theme to Playboy’s Penthouse was written by Cy Coleman. The first Playboy Club opened at 116 E. Walton Street in downtown Chicago on February 29, 1960. Each club generally featured a Living Room, a Playmate Bar, a Dining Room, and a Club Room. The clubs offered name entertainers in the Club Rooms, and local musicians in the Living Rooms. In 1961, The Playboy Club was the busiest nightclub in the world. The lead singer of Blondie, Deborah Harry, worked as a Playboy Bunny at New York City’s Playboy Club from 1968 to 1973, back when she had long brown hair. In 1969, the television show Playboy After Dark premiered. The eclectic musical guest listed included Jack Jones, Buddy Rich, Joe Cocker, Ike & Tina Turner, Harry Nilsson, The Grateful Dead, Deep Purple, James Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad, Iron Butterfly and Linda Ronstadt. The second Playboy Jazz Festival did not occur until 1979 when it was moved to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The event has been held there ever since. The Los Angeles Playboy Jazz Festival was produced for 32 consecutive years by Darlene Chan and George Wein (who also produced the first Newport Jazz Festival in 1954, and the man Newsweek magazine credits as being “the most responsible for turning jazz into a summer staple”).
Bill Cosby was the emcee of the annual festival from 1979 to 2012. In 1995, singer Nancy Sinatra at age 55 appeared in Playboy Magazine. The highlight of the 1998 Playboy Jazz Festival’s 20th Anniversary celebration was a spectacular fireworks display keyed to Al Jarreau’s hit “Roof Garden.” In 1999, actor, director, musician Jeff Goldblum, best known for his roles in “Jurassic Park” and “Independence Day”, made his Playboy Jazz Festival debut with his own group, the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. Making his long-awaited Playboy Jazz Festival debut in 2000, Lou Rawls proved he was still the personification of cool. His closing set included such hits as “Groovy People”, “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine” and “Lady Love.” A protégé of legendary producer Quincy Jones, the gifted 23 year-old pianist Alfredo Rodriguez mesmerized the 2009 audience in his Festival debut— just months after defecting from Cuba— in one of his first United State performances. In 2013, comedian George Lopez took over the reign as host of The Playboy Jazz Festival. “From the very first issue in 1953, it has been with great pleasure and admiration that Playboy has celebrated the music and popular entertainers of our time. From the stages of the original Playboy Clubs, television’s Playboy’s Penthouse and Playboy After Dark, to the rich tradition of the annual Playboy Jazz Festival - the love affair continues!” HUGH M. Palm Springs High School band is always a staple during most parades. There were elaborate floats by some of the local bars and businesses. Gays, Lesbians, bisexual and Transgender groups walked the route, some in fancy costumes. Other bands and dance groups
were a big hit with the crowds. There were the Grand Marshall and other awardees in big limos or antique autos. Palm Springs city officials were all in attendance. Of course, it wouldn’t be a parade without horses and buggies.

ABROAD The Life & Times of an Irish Royal WITH BEVERLY COHN
Up Close & Very Personal With the 7th Earl of Rosse, William Clere Leonard Brendan Parsons PART ONE:
On a recent press trip to Ireland, I had the distinct pleasure of spending a day with William Clere Leonard Brendan Parsons, the 7th Earl of Rosse, who goes by the name of Brendan Parsons. He lives in the historic Birr Castle and Demesne* with his wife, Alison, the Countess of Rosse. The eldest son of Laurence Michael Harvey Parsons, 6th Earl of Rosse and Anne Messel, he was known as Baron Oxmantown from his birth until he succeeded to the peerage in 1979. Located in the center of Ireland, Birr was the ancestral home of the Parsons family and a medieval stronghold. He inherited his title on the death of his father in 1979. Historically, Birr was the Silicon Valley of its day, attracting scientists, engineers, and astronomers from around the world. Under Brendan’s watchful eyes, the Birr Scientific and Heritage Foundation administers the Domaine. The castle is not open to the public, but they are welcome to explore the fifty acres of lavish grounds, which contain plants and trees from all over the world. The river Camcor flows threw the property. Standing in the center of the park is a huge telescope created in the 1840s by William Parsons, the Third Earl of Rosse. The telescope, named the Leviathan of Parsonstown, was the largest in the world for over 70 years. Another ancestor of note was Mary Rosse, Countess of Rosse. She was a British astronomer and photographer and was one of the first people to create photographs from waxpaper negatives. She eventually won a prize for her photograph of the telescope. After strolling through the
lush grounds with Brendan, and a lovely lunch in the castle with he and the Countess, the exclusive interview was conducted in a hidden room up a long, winding staircase, which was stacked from floor to ceiling with dozens of boxes containing documents relating to his ancestors. The following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. What was your world like as a little boy? Rosse: My world as a little boy was pretty simple because most of my childhood was spent during the Second World War. I remember being in the north of England with my mother, sister, and two brothers. My father was serving in the Irish Guards. After the army had requisitioned the greater part of it, we lived in what was left of a large house in Yorkshire. The house had come to us through the family of my great-grandmother, Cassandra. Following the war, my dad joined us in Yorkshire where we got our visas so we could go to Ireland. How did you access food in during the war? Rosse: Even in a rural area, there was strict rationing. We lived off the land, eating vegetables, fruits of the orchard, the kitchen garden, and things like rabbits, rooks, nettles, and cow lips. It was a happy, healthy life, but not one of great luxury that one became aware of after the war, when we could take possession again of the lovely seeds of Birr Castle. What was it like moving into Birr Castle at age nine? Rosse: We didn’t have the castle entirely to ourselves. We had the top floor to run around in, provided we didn’t disturb
Brendan points out a special flower from one of the trees that dot his gardens, which are sprawled over fifty acres of lush greenery. Photo: Beverly Cohn the grown-ups underneath us. I realized how lucky one was to have such an enormous home. We even learned how not to fall into the moat. It was a life of great luxury, less so for us perhaps, than for the visiting guests. Did you dine with your parents? Rosse: We ate most of the meals separately, except for lunch. We came into the dining room for only two of the four or five courses for the grown ups. We sat at a table near the window and spoke to each other, or with our nanny or tutor, or governess. We waited to be brought into the adult conversation. Our mother would have her back to the children’s table. She would turn around and say, “How are the children? What are we doing this afternoon?” Did your parents dress for dinner? Rosse: My parents always

dressed for dinner, which was very formal. A footman rang the gong, which was the signal to change for dinner. The evening dress for men at home, rather than black tie, was a velvet smoking jacket and a pair of velvet trousers, as well as embroidered slippers. It gave mother the occasion to dress up in her finery and beautiful jewelry every night, which she adored. It gave my father great pleasure to see her so elegantly attired. What about your schooling? Rosse: When I was seven, I was taken by my sister to Summer Fields, a school in the northern side of Oxford. My parents hadn’t seen the school but thought it would be a good place for me. It’s a traditional school where one learned the classics in Latin and Greek, as well as French. I was there a couple of years and my parents never came to see me.
and his father and other peers had also been sent there. It was an absolute disaster for me. I was abused and mistreated. I just hated every aspect of it. There was no one who I could befriend or who befriended me. I was subjected to abuse partly because I was too small to be any good at games. The only thing I was good at was coxing boats because I had a loud voice. However, if the boat I coxed did not win, I got beaten. This happened regularly, always by the boys, never by the masters, who turned a completely blind eye, as did parents. One doesn’t begin to understand why adults never intervened to stop the big boys from bullying the little boys. I was the only Irish boy in my house and was seen as a dirty little foreigner – the boy from the bogs. Despite my royal heritage, I was not considered a member of the upper class or society.
Do you remember how you felt being away from home? Rosse: I remember vividly my first day and night. My sister handed me over to a uniformed matron. I got a slap on the back and an embrace. The first night, I found myself in a dormitory next to a boy who was a refugee from Romania. He spoke French, but not a word of English. It was also his first night at school. With his head buried in his pillow, he was crying his heart out. I was the only person who could communicate with him because I spoke French. Even then, I realized that I am a happy person and had much more to be thankful for than he had.
How long were you at Eton? Rosse: I was thirteen or fourteen and after a year there, I got seriously ill with TB. It wasn’t fashionable to call it TB, so it was called “a touch on the lung.” I came home and spent a few months in bed, where my father read me stories of Irish history. This gave me a sort of bond with him that I hadn’t had before. Then, the local doctor gave me a great prescription, which said I needed a pint of Guinness a day, and a year in the mountains. I only drank a halfpint and it was the first time I got drunk. So, I was sent off to Aiglon College in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. I spent an immensely happy year there and What was the rest of your had the advantage of being able school experience? to communicate reasonably well Rosse: At age twelve I was in French. sent to Eton, the school of the British establishment. FILM PBS Titles and More on DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
PBS is synonymous for entertaining as well as enlightening. Their shows go from Great Performances like the multi-award winning musical “Billy Elliot” and “Oklahoma” staring Hugh Jackman to wonderful nature productions like “The Soul of the Elephant. And of course there’s Masterpiece Theatre with such fine series as “Downton Abbey” and one of my personal favorites “Grantchester,” set in a lovely English village not long after WW II where a young vicar teams up with an atheist local police inspector to solve crimes. This one has everything from the spiritual and romantic to mystery and murder. “Mary Tyler Moore: A Celebration” recently aired on PBS and is now on DVD. As the charming, adorable Mary Richards, a TV news woman in the CBS TV series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ she could ‘turn the word on with her
smile.” And she was joined in this endeavor by Ed Asner as her boss, Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman as her gal pals and Betty White and others as her newsroom associates. She was also Dick Van Dyke’s wife on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” created by Carl Reiner about a comedy writer. In this special, there are dozens of classic clips, plus comments by Betty White, Ed Asner and Gavin MacLeod and other cast members from both shows. An added plus is Oprah Winfrey recounting how Mary Tyler Moore played a critical role in inspiring her and millions of others as TV’s first independent career woman. This DVD is the perfect way to take a look back at the career of this fine actress who also starred in films as well as TV roles.

“The Jewish Journey: America” explores what it means
to be a part of a tight-knit Jewish community and eventually have to make the heart-breaking choice to leave family behind for economic opportunity or to escape persecution as was the case when the Nazis came into power. Archival film footage and photographs are used to recount how many took a leap of faith and made their way to America in any way that they could. Produced and directed by Emmy Award winner Andrew Goldberg, the film follows the trajectory of Jewish Americans from their earliest arrivals in the mid-17th century through the impact of the Nazi regime in World War II. It also deals with the creation of Israel and the new challenges of 21st century assimilation. Special features include over twenty minutes of moving bonus interviews. PBS.
film “She‘s Funny That Way,” now on DVD, has more comedic twists and turns than a pretzel as established director Arnold Albertson (Owen Wilson) casts call-girl-turned-actress Isabella “Izzy” Patterson (Imogen Poots) in a new play to star along with his wife Della (Kathryn Hawn) and her ex-lover Seth Gilbert (Rhys Ifans, “The Amazing Spiderman”). Soon zany love triangle forms that also involves Jennifer Aniston, Izzy’s therapist Jane, who is consumed with her own failing relationship with Arnold’s playwright Joshua Fleet (Will Forte “Nebraska”) •••••••••••••• who is developing a crush on The brand new Lionsgate Izzy. This screwball showbiz
comedy was directed by Peter Bogdanovich (Best Director: “The Last Picture Show“ 1971). The Blu-ray feature’s commentary with Co-writer/Director Peter Bogdanovich and Co-writer/ Producer Louise Stratten and a Behind-the-Scenes Featurette of “She’s Funny That Way.“ Rated R for language and some sexual references. Continued from Page 10 What was the overarching experience in Switzerland? Rosse: I owe great deal to my Swiss school experience. It was a marvelous opening to see that there is a wider world beyond anything dominated by the Brits in the English-speaking world. It helped to not only bring out one’s Irishness, but also helped to get over an inferiority complex caused by rejection of one’s Irish heritage by the British establishment. It also gave one a yearning to see what other

You are Queen Elizabeth’s brother-in-law. Do you have any occasions to visit her? Rosse: Not really. However, I have enormous respect for the royal family and generally for monarchies, which have done more for democracies than republics have. I have great respect for the queen, particularly everything that she has done to foster and encourage the development of the Commonwealth. One of my very few regrets about the evolution of Ireland is that it left the Commonwealth. I think that is one of the very few mistakes Ireland has made. I say this not because of its benefits, but because Ireland could have contributed hugely to the Commonwealth.

Were you invited to the wedding? Rosse: The royal wedding with Princess Margaret in 1960? Oh yes, of course we were. But we were placed way in the back pew so we had limited vision of the ceremony. It was a marvelous event to see such royal pageantry.

You mentioned earlier that men wore smoking jackets to dinner. When did you get your smoking jacket and was it a big occasion? Rosse: When we became adults, we were given our own smoking jackets. I got mine when I turned twenty-one, which was bottle green because my father’s was claret colored. Coming of age was a big occasion. There was a huge party given for me. There were fireworks that had to be specially imported. It took weeks and weeks to get the permit. It was the largest fireworks display that had been seen in Ireland since the Great Fireworks Display of 1851 to mark the Great Exhibition. However, I was only allowed to ask one friend, and that was a Persian girl who I had met at Oxford. That caused a certain amount of talk in town, shall we say. We’re still very great friends, and I have a love for all things Persian. Did you want to marry her? Rosse: It was said in the papers and rumors were circulating. But no. We were both much too young to seriously consider getting married. *A demesne, or domain, is a country estate with feudal origins. Environmental Agenda Will Cost Californians
By Assemblyman Brian Jones (R-Santee) Governor Brown signed SB 350 (De León) into law, a bill that mandates that half of California’s electricity come from renewable sources in fifteen years. This law
will dramatically increase energy cost for Californians, who are already living with one of the highest electricity rates in the nation. Currently, the average Californian residential electricity rate is 15.34¢/kWh, 29.12% greater than the national average. The average residents in Eastern San Diego County pay an additional 6.58% in electricity rate on top of it. Those living in areas with warmer temperatures will be hit especially hard by the electricity hikes that this law causes. A study by Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc. estimated that the average retail electricity rates in California will likely increase 47% between 2012 and 2030 prior to this law’s passage, and will increase
an additional 9-23% after. Such dramatic rate hikes will not only raise prices and reduce spending power, but will also increase the already burdensome costs of doing business in California, potentially pushing more businesses to leave the state and worsening the economy in California. Californian businesses are already one of the most energy efficient in the nation. Incentivized to maintain productivity and profitability, they consume 11.32% less electricity than the national average per month. Not to be outdone, the Californian residents consume 36.54% less than the national average residential electricity consumption per month. SB 350, however, imposes an additional 50% energy reduction on top of
this progress without providing any detail in how California will reach this goal or accounting for the steps Californians have already taken. The bill’s author, commenting on its passage, said: “we are doing away with the tired old stereotypes of environmentalism as a pastime of the wealthy and the elite. Soon, whether you live in Boyle Heights or Beverly Hills, Modesto or Marin, Sausalito or Santa Ana, Sacramento or Logan Heights, San Diego, you will have the same access to clean electricity and clean air.” Yet, unlike the “wealthy and the elite,” poorer residents will not be able to endure the skyrocketing utility costs. It’s time for the legislature to work for the majority of all Californians, rather than the
few, out of touch, misguided environmental special interests. California can be the Golden State again if we are good stewards of our environment while promoting intelligent science-based policies. Assemblyman Brian Jones represents the 71st Assembly District, which includes the communities of eastern San Diego County, including Alpine, Borrego Springs, Casa de Oro Mount Helix, El Cajon, Lakeside, Jamul, Ramona, Rancho San Diego, Santee and Spring Valley; and southern Riverside County, including Anza, Aguanga, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, Lake Riverside and Mountain Center.

MUSIC New music films available now on DVD BY ROBERT KINSLER
What do the far-flung likes of the Rolling Stones, Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz and Elliott Smith have in common? All are the focus of newly-issued films now available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital. Artist: The Rolling Stones Title: From the Vault: Live at the Tokyo Dome 1990 (Eagle Vision) You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards Tell me more: Rock fans wanting to see a Rolling Stones concert that captured the Brits at their best should check out the recent release “From the Vault: Live at the Tokyo Dome 1990.” Filmed during the Stones’ 10date run at the Tokyo Dome in 1990 where the band marked its first-ever live dates in Japan, the footage has been fully restored and the audio has been newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain to achieve something equaling the power of the 130-minute performance in front of 55,000
excited fans. The set list is truly perfect, balancing the band’s best ‘60s and ‘70s classics with five standouts from the Stones’ outstanding 1989 comeback album “Steel Wheels.” The highlights come fast and furious including the soulful “The Harlem Shuffle” bolstered by the work of the Uptown Horns, the discorocker “Miss You” featuring Bobby Keys’ terrific work on sax, the full-on rocker “Rock and a Hard Place,” and an incredible performance of the band’s masterwork “Gimme Shelter” with Mick Jagger and singer Cindy Mizelle trading potent lead vocals. Information: eagle-rock. com.
European tour, the film offers a revealing look at the extensive process that the rocker and his troupe goest through to prepare for a tour, and how playing concerts is an entirely different experience than recording in the studio. Director Paul Dugdale is able to deliver both the concert performances and interview segments with a unified vision. The performances sizzle; “Dirty White Boots” (with Kravitz tearing up on lead guitar), “American Woman,” the funky “Dancin’ Til Dawn,” acoustic “Sister” and blistering version of “Are You Gonna Go My Way” capture the power of each song. Information: eagle-rock.com.
Artist: Lenny Kravitz Title: Just Let Go: Lenny Kravitz Live (Eagle Vision) You might like if you enjoy: Jimi Hendrix, Gary Clark Jr. Tell me more: “Just Let Go” is far more than a concert film. While the title features Lenny Kravitz and his excellent band performing during a 2014
Artist: Katy Perry Title: The Prismatic World Tour Live (Eagle Vision) You might like if you enjoy: Katy Perry, Madonna Tell me more: Katy Perry has scored plenty of hits since the release of her 2008 album “One of the Boys,” but it are the singer-songwriter’s extravagant
concerts that impress most. So fans of the popular pop star will be thrilled with her concert film “The Prismatic World Tour Live” which offers a dazzling mix of music, theatrical effects, fearless acrobatics, eye-catching costumes and radio hits galore. Filmed in Sydney, Australia in December 2014, Perry and her cast of dancers and musicians are fully showcased across the seven-act production by director Russell Thomas. A popular songstress able to masterfully blend dance-minded disco pop with light rock, high points on the concert film include the animated “Roar,” EDM-styled “Wide Awake,” piano-anchored ballad “By the Grace of God” and sparkling “Firework.” Information: katyperry.com. Artist: Elliott Smith Title: Heaven Adores You (Eagle Vision) You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young, Elliott Smith, Nick Drake Tell me more: The first full-
length documentary to ever explore the life and music of acclaimed singer-songwriter Elliott Smith (1969-2003), “Heaven Adores You” is as heartfelt and introspective as the song craft of its gone-too-soon subject. Utilizing a blend of gritty visual images of the locations he called home (primarily Portland, New York City and Los Angeles), performance video and audio of Smith, and interviews with those who knew him best, “Heave Adores You” is a compelling portrait of Smith and his long artistic shadow. Even music fans not familiar with Smith will be impressed by his life story and excerpts from his original songs, including “Miss Misery,” “Son Of Sam,” “Happiness” and “Waltz #2.” Information: heavenadoresyou.com and eagle-rock.com. Wolfgang Puck debuts newest concept WP Kitchen
By Desert Star Staff Palm Desert, CA. –Today chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck introduces his newest restaurant concept, WP Kitchen + Bar to the city of Palm Desert. Open now and situated in the former Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar location, the restaurant boasts a fresh new look and offers a refined dining experience for locals and visitors alike. “Palm Desert has always been a special place to me, so when we had the opportunity to open a restaurant here I didn’t hesitate,” said Wolfgang Puck. “The way people are dining today is different than just a few years ago so my idea with WP Kitchen + Bar was to create a more relaxed environment, expand the number of seasonal and healthy options on the menu, and share a piece of how I like to eat in my own home. I hope you enjoy!” THE MENU: Drawing inspiration from how the acclaimed chef and restaurateur entertains at home with family and friends, WP Kitchen + Bar boasts Wolfgang’s globally influenced cuisine in an approachable, family-style format. Wolfgang has appointed brand veteran Matt Leverty as the Executive Chef of the restaurant. Leverty began his career with the Wolfgang Puck family in 2006
when he was hired as a line cook at the former 20.21, Puck’s Asian fusion restaurant in Minneapolis. Leverty has since worked his way up through a number of Wolfgang’s fine dining kitchens, most recently working as a sous chef and kitchen manager of Spago Las Vegas. The all-day menu features a seasonal selection of shareable dishes such as the Smoked Salmon Bruschetta with watercress, apples, radish, pumpkin seeds and a horseradish cream, a Fritto Misto with shrimp, calamari, kaboucha squash, cauliflower, lemon and squid aiolo, and a Kale and Spinach Salad with farro, goat cheese and a citrus vinaigrette. Larger share options range from pizzas and pastas including the Diavalo Chicken pizza with shishito peppers, Fresno chili, pickled eggplant and mozzarella; Wolfgang’s signature Smoked Salmon pizza with dill crème, red onion, chives and caviar, and a Spaghetti Gargano with Dungeness crab, radicchio, serrano chili, lemon and breadcrumbs. A variety of seafood, steak and other proteins round out the menu and range from Wolfgang’s take on the classic “Pollo al Mattone,” to a Sea Bass “Veracruz” with tomato, garlic, chili, green olive, capers and lemon, and a Braised
Beef Short Rib with Moroccan spices, cous, dried fruit and toasted almonds. Together, Wolfgang and Corporate Pastry Chef Kamel Guechida developed a dessert menu that illustrates their expertise in French technique and love for a classic end to any meal. Highlights include the Salted Caramel Pudding with crème fraiche whipped cream and brown sugar, a Molten Chocolate Cake with chocolate ice cream, and a rotating selection of seasonal ice creams. Complementing the menu is an eclectic offering of wines by the glass and full bottle, craft beers and handcrafted cocktails. With a focus on south of the border spirits, the new bar menu features a wide range of artisan tequilas and smoky mezcals. Cocktail highlights include the Smoke & Salt with Zicaru Silver Mezcal, Chamuscos Silver Tequila, white crème de menthe and oregeat syrup, and the Desert Bloom with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, maple syrup, sage and lemon. THE SPACE: Wolfgang and his team worked collaboratively with EDG Interior Architecture + Design to create an updated, bright and modern space that flows seamlessly with the
surrounding desert landscape. A variety of light-washed woods, rustic colors and desert-inspired textiles add a dynamic yet contemporary flare to the 140seat dining room, where new pendant lighting is suspended above. The existing outdoor patio now offers built-in banquette seating for up to 35 guests and is surrounded by desert foliage for a comfortable and relaxed outdoor dining experience.
WP Kitchen + Bar is located at 73130 El Paseo in scenic Palm Desert. The restaurant is open from 11AM – 9PM on Sunday, 11AM – 10PM Monday – Thursday and 11AM – 11PM Friday – Saturday. Happy hour is from 3-5PM daily in the bar, lounge and outdoor patio. For additional details please contact the restaurant at 760.568.2700, or visit www.wolfgangpuck.com.

Caitlyn Jenner By Jocelyn Noveck NEW YORK (AP) - Caitlyn Jenner, undoubtedly one of the most talked-about women in the world, is being honored as one of Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year on Monday in a glittery ceremony along with fellow honorees like actress Reese Witherspoon, dancer Misty Copeland and designer Victoria Beckham. The annual ceremony at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan mixes high-wattage celebrities with lesser known names, and this year, the award winners include five women touched by the South Carolina church massacre - Alana Simmons, Nadine Collier, Bethane Middleton-Brown, Felicia Sanders and Polly Sheppard
Reese Witherspoon - and lauded in the aftermath as “The Peacemakers of Charleston.” Also to be honored: Entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes, Planned Parenthoood’s Cecile Richards and the victorious U.S. women’s soccer team. This year is the 25th anniversary of the awards, and former honorees Madeleine Albright, Serena Williams and Billie Jean King were among those scheduled to be on hand for the festivities. Amy Schumer was scheduled to open the ceremony, and Jennifer Hudson and Ellie Goulding to perform. Jenner is not the first transgender woman to be a Glamour Woman of the Year; last year, actress Laverne Cox was honored. Still, Jenner’s inclusion sparked some backlash on
social media. “We prefer to focus on the positive,” Jenner said through a spokesman ahead of the announcement. Cindi Leive, Glamour’s editor-in-chief, told The Associated Press that criticism of Jenner’s inclusion “certainly gives you an appreciation for the hostility to the trans community that still exists out there.” Among the achievements of some of this year’s honorees: Witherspoon co-founded a production company, Pacific Standard, which aims to make films featuring strong female lead roles as way to fight the gender gap in Hollywood. The company’s “Wild” and “Gone Girl” earned Oscar nominations for Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Rosamund Pike.
Copeland became the first female African-American principal at American Ballet Theatre in June. Jenner, a former Olympic hero and Kardashian-Jenner family reality star, came out as a trans woman earlier this year. Her docuseries, “I Am Cait,” was just picked up by E! for a second season. Beckham gained fame as a Spice Girl, but has since become a highly respected fashion designer. The U.S. women’s soccer team handily defeated Japan to win the 2015 World Cup in July, and was recently welcomed at the White House by President Barack Obama.

It’s called “Offender Watch,” and it’s starting just days before Halloween. According to police, it’s an effort to help people avoid potentially dangerous homes, especially while trick or treating. The new website allows people to search any address where they plan on trick or treating.

The mapping and address feature pinpoints exactly where registered offenders live in the city. The site also shows a picture of registered offenders and the crime that person committed. Additionally, residents can sign up to be notified if a registered offender moves within a certain radius of their address. Desert Hot Springs residents are relieved police is taking the initiative to keep kids safe. “That’s an awesome idea. Because now there are so many sex offenders
out here and we need to know where it is safe for our kids to trick or treat,” Desert Hot Springs resident Lequenita Pearson said. According to some residents, this website will be helpful for parents. “The parents should be with them and should be aware where these people do live and then not to take their kids there to bother them.” Desert Hot Springs resident Greg Moon said. This new effort comes just days after state attorneys November 11, 2015
decided sex offenders in California will not be required to put out signs this year telling trick or treaters to stay away. That sign requirement was ruled unconstitutional. Desert Hot Springs Police are encouraging people to check the website before heading out this Halloween with their kids, even if they plan to visit other neighborhoods than their own. According to police, there are approximately 100 registered sex offenders in the city.

World premiere musical debuts at Pasadena Playhouse

Alison Luff, Matt Magnusson in BREAKING THROUGH. Photo: Jim Cox Photography. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic There are so few really good original musicals being written and produced these days. Money always plays a role in the decision to produce or not. So when a major Regional theatre like the Pasadena Playhouse schedules a show one looks forward to seeing a promising new storyline with a high powered cast. It is only logical for expectations and hope to run high for a hit. It’s a bit disappointing then, when the anticipated ‘smash hit show’ falls into the category of a missed opportunity. The world premiere of “Breaking Through”, a musical with a book by Kirsten Guenther and music and lyrics by Cliff Downs and Katie Kahanovitz, is now on stage at The Pasadena Playhouse under the direction of Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps. Epps is one of the savviest directors working these days. He has a winning-track record; with musicals being one of his strong suits on Broadway and elsewhere. His “Blues in the Night” and “Play On” productions received Tony Award nominations. But, even the best can only do so much when the original material, in this case, a weak book, bordering on a formulaic,
soap-opera feel to the characters along with banal lyrics and text by Librettist Guenther, make “Breaking Through” an uphill battle. The Faustian bargainlike story about today’s music industry business with its talented singers, songwriters, performers, and creative producers who sell their souls in order to grab the brass ring for a while along with those nasty sex-driven moguls is not new. Such a concept might appear at first, to be a great idea for a musical. Others, however, have tried to capture the music industry in two acts this season in LA. The Geffen Playhouse fell into the same trap with its production of “Those Paper Bullets”. Both “Breaking Through” and “Those Paper Bullets” stories failed to fully engage and the credulity gaps in both productions was a little too wide to overcome. Having said the above, however, the production of Breaking Through” is rich in performing talent. The character Charlie Jane, a talented, young, naïve singer/songwriter/ performer who arrives in New York City to share her songs and feelings with America, is wonderfully played by Allison Luff. Luff, is a performer blessed with star quality and stage presence, along with a soaring vocal range and performing firepower second to none.

The orchestra under the baton of David O, delivers the beat and drive necessary for a musical featuring soloists and dance numbers.
