Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 51st Annual Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Cart Parade in Palm Desert was held on Sunday Oct. 25th. It is always the last Sunday in October so you can put it on your calendar for next year in case you missed this wonderful fall event. They said there were about 20,000 people attending this year. The day started with a

pancake breakfast by the Palm Desert Rotary that started early in the morning, and the parade started at 1:00. There was a fly over compliments of the Palm Springs Air Museum to start the Parade. By Gregory Katz LONDON (AP) - The new James Bond flick “Spectre” got a royal seal of approval at its world premiere Monday night. Fans who lined the red carpet not only got to see Daniel Craig - resplendent in a dark tuxedo and earthy smile - and glamorous co-stars Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci, but could also catch a glimpse of Prince William, his wife Kate, and

Prince Harry, still sporting a beard. All eyes were on Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, who was among the last to arrive at the Royal Albert Hall before the film rolled. She chose a light blue Jenny Packham dress for the event. The two princes wore tuxedos, which have been something of a Bond trademark since the days when Sean Connery played 007

and arm paintings, and balloon figures. Kids got a chance to paint a huge garbage bin and watch a taekwando exhibition. There were games with prizes and music for entertainment. First Annual Palm Springs Classic Science-Fiction Film Festival

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Cultural Center presented its First Annual Palm Springs Classic ScienceFiction Film Festival at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs. The event was hosted and produced by Alan K. Rode who is also involved with the Palm Springs Film Noir. The event took place on October 23 through the 25th. The opening-night film was, THE FLY, which was a very scary movie in that time. The special guest was David Hedison, who was the actor in the movie. The film hosted a pair of sequels using the atomscrambling device, a novel idea at that time and was a box-office smash. Saturday’s movies included such timeless films as, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and The Incredible Shrinking Man. These iconic films from the 50s were ahead of their time in the world of science fiction and were filmed to last through the decades as classic films. I can remember watching these movies and being scared by the actors like Vincent Price, who made his career as the villain in these films. Monsters were the

norm in some of these films like the prehistoric Gill Man, Dinosaurs, aliens, gigantic ants and flies. The films were made to scare but also had things that were the beginning of special effects in today’s movies. Saturdays special guest for the film, Creature from the Black Lagoon, was Actress Julie Adams, who had a major role in the film. Adams brought her book, The Lucky Southern Star: Reflections from the Black Lagoon, and photos from Alan K. Rode Julie Adams. Photo by Pat Krause the film to autograph for fans. I love it when actors and actresses come to support their films, even if they were made years ago. Sunday’s films included other frightening science fiction movies, The Thing from Another World; It Came From Outer space and the scary, THEM. Sundays special guest from the film, It Came from Outer Space, was Kathleen Hughes. I think we as older adults can remember these films fondly and hope the younger generation will see and appreciate these wonderful old movies. Michael Green and Mathew Christianson. The American Daredevil, Robbie Knievel, rode his death defying jump on his two-wheeled bike over 36 golf carts. Robbie is known for his daring stunts just like his father,

Evel Knievel, and is keeping the Knievel name famous. These two daredevils have completed some of the most outlandish feats in history on their two-wheeled bikes. The ramps for the jump were huge and there were hay bales to stop him, in case he didn’t stop on time. He has been injured many times doing his amazing jumps. saving his corporation from bankruptcy, lies in his talent of using debt to leverage and renegotiate a new deal. He has proven his methods time and time again. Here are some tips for you to consider if you have to negotiate using debt as leverage. Most people are not good negotiators and do not have a clue about how to represent themselves. Professionals will know and understand all of the adversary’s weak points and before negotiating with them will have a clear understanding of what probable solution may be granted. They understand that the dynamics of the original agreement that may be changed, such as interest rates, time periods, creditors write off potential. Both secured and unsecured creditors have the following weaknesses. You can use these to your advantage. • They may be subject to collections laws. If you are negotiating with a debt (FDCPA), which limits the tactics collectors may use to collect debts. While creditors are not subject to the FDCPA, many states have laws that limit creditor collection tactics. • It is expensive for creditors to sue. Creditors generally see litigation as a last resort because of the time and money it requires, and because a lawsuit does not guarantee the creditor will recover any money. have to pay back the funds if taken out as a loan. Most unsecured creditors will eventually settle for pennies on the dollar. The debtor should start low and aim for 50% or less as the overall settlement amount. I, recommend using some legal websites to get forms needed for do-it-yourselfers, such as www. nolo.com or www.rocketlawyer. com, or www.lexingtonlaw.com. Not taking notes during negotiations can cause you to miss needed points. Most creditors give conflicting information. Debtors need to take detailed notes about who they talked to, when, and what amount was negotiated. Using a debt consolidation company may not be a benefit. These businesses charge a hefty monthly fee, and there is no guarantee that any debt will actually be settled.

Many debtors miss the big picture when negotiating. The debtor should look at all debt and then examine the real likelihood of being able to pay one-half of that debt. Many debtors may still end up filing for bankruptcy protection even after paying thousands to settle debt. If debtors understand these basic concepts before making that first call to a creditor, debt negotiation may be very worthwhile and assist in relieving financial burdens. have even more weaknesses. • They have far less negotiating power than secured creditors. Only in rare situations can unsecured creditors repossess property. • They have much more to lose. If the debtor cannot settle debts and instead files for bankruptcy protection, the unsecured creditor usually gets nothing. Cash is king when it comes to debt negotiation. If a debtor can transfer funds immediately, the creditor is more likely to settle quickly and for a lower amount. However, the debtor should avoid using equity in secured property or money from retirement plans in to pay unsecured debt. Increased monthly payments could cause risk of losing the property. Using retirement funds to pay debt can cause hefty taxes, and you may

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Given the short time they serve (due to term limits), legislators rarely can address complex issues, and that includes homeowner association law. Except for the California Law Revision Commission’s excellent work relocating and reorganizing the Common Interest Development Act (2011’s AB 805), the last significant body of amendments to the Act was 2005’s SB 137, substantially changing the delinquent assessment collection process. Most amendments to the Act are more narrow, resulting in protection for personal gardens (2014’s AB 2561), artificial turf (this year’s AB 349), or

the American Flag (2002’s SB 2032). Badly needed reforms, such as simplifying the Act for small associations, are still not addressed. Another example is AB 1448, authored by Assemblyman Lopez and approved by Governor Brown on October 8. This legislation adds Civil Code 4750.10 and protects the rights of HOA residents to use clotheslines or drying racks in their private backyards, subject to reasonable association restrictions. The new law will not apply to front yards, balconies, or areas which are not enclosed and accessible only by the resident. The statute does not define “backyard”, so it is unclear if enclosed side yards are also protected locations for clotheslines or drying racks. “Clothesline” and “drying rack” are defined as not using a balcony, railing, awning or other building or other structure component. Associations are free to have reasonable restrictions regarding private backyard drying racks and clotheslines, so long as they do not unreasonably restrict or effectively ban them. “Reasonable” means it does not October 28, 2015

significantly increase the cost of using them. While the statute does not state whether a private enclosed side yard is considered a “backyard,” if such an area is not visible from the street or the common areas, it may be reasonable to allow clotheslines and drying racks there. Even if the statute does not require it, such permission seems consistent with the law’s intent. If backyard fences are chain link or wrought iron, can the association require the owner to screen the area or use an area which is not visible from the street or common area? A reasonable interpretation, balancing the considerations involved, would indicate that the HOA could. The new law takes effect on January 1, 2016. Boards should consider beginning the rule-making process now, to develop reasonable rules on this subject. Since boards must wait 30 or more days after publishing a draft rule change to the members before they can approve a change, it might already be too late for some HOAs to have rules in place before this law takes effect. Hopefully, homeowners will be

patient with their boards if they are seeking to use drying racks or clotheslines, and give their boards time to adopt reasonable rules on the subject. To read AB 1448, visit www. leginfo.legislature.ca.gov, and click on the “bill information” tab. After entering the bill number, one can read it. After January 1, 2016, the new law can be found at the same site by clicking on “California Law”, then “Civil Code,” and then scrolling down to the correct section number. Fifty years ago, my parents rejoiced when they acquired a clothes dryer and permanently retired their clothesline. If clotheslines make a comeback, the Civil Code will be ready for it. However, California’s small associations continue to wait for some help. Kelly G. Coachella Valley Rescue mission . . .Lending a hand To help those in need

By Madeline Zuckerman “A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor, Proverbs 22:9 In 1971, a group of concerned businessmen and churches came together to form the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission in Indio, California. Their Mission has always been to provide a safe haven and a place of refuge for the homeless, abused, addicted, and needy where physical, spiritual and developmental needs are met. Assistance was provided by the Union Rescue Mission of Los Angeles, which seeded the endeavor with funds to purchase property on Van Buren Blvd. in what was then known as the Carver Tract. A soup kitchen and overnight shelter served the

growing homeless and migrant worker population. The addition of the men’s dorm and shower facilities were added onto the original WWII era meeting hall, kitchen, and dining room. Each night across America, more than one million children have no place to call home. These families represent the largest and fastest growing group of the homeless population. For these families a lack of affordable housing is just one part in a larger set of problems including inadequate education, domestic violence, poor employability, and a general lack of community and personal support. Did you know . . . children and families make up the fastest growing segment of the homeless population? Did you know . . .there are as many as 500,000 families in shelters nationwide and 1.35 million homeless children each year? Did you know . . .over half of homeless families have been homeless for 6 months or more? Did you know . . .the average homeless child in America is only 6 years old? The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission currently shelters over 150 men, women,

and children in residential programs. CVRM also provides Emergency Shelter to an additional 75 men, women, and children each night, 365 days a year in their multipurpose overnight shelter. Their Emergency Shelter Program provides its services for FREE to all arriving in need, regardless of gender, national origin, ethnic background, social economic group, religion or age group. As the number of homeless in the area continued to grow, the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission made plans to expand their facility. Property was purchased across the street from the Mission and in 2007, the organization started their Building New Beginnings Capital Campaign. Their new facility was built and completed in November of 2011, providing on-site separate shelter buildings for families, women and men. Their Gateway and New Life Programs have continued to develop and flourish, having an over 80% rate of success. In May 2015, CVRM opened their new Annex Shelter, providing emergency and overnight services for an additional 75 people each night. This new facility also serves as a 24-hour hot and cold weather

shelter for all people in need. Thousands of men, women, and children have been helped through the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission’s effective and worthwhile programs, which consist of: FEEDING THE HUNGRY Program – The Mission currently provides over 13,000 meals each month to men, women, and children within the Coachella Valley PROVIDING SHELTER Program WOMEN AND FAMILY SERVICES Program – On any given day an estimated 5,000 people are homeless just in Riverside County. Tragically, nearly half of them are women and children. GATEWAY Program – A 12-month residential education/ vocational program designed to restore people to the community. NEW LIFE Program – for people who have been struggling with addictions, depression, or caught in a cycle of joblessness and homelessness. New Life Thrift Store: Today, the Mission feeds and cares for over 250 clients in their residential housing programs and hundreds of families weekly through their outreach activities.

It is estimated this year over 198,000 meals will be served in their kitchen, with over 72,000 nights of safe shelter provided for the needy. “We have more people and more families than ever before coming to us for food, meals, and beds, stated Executive Director Darla Burkett. “We want to be able to say YES to all people who are in need of a meal, a bed, and a life changing program, Burkett continued. New Online Tool Helps Latinos Plan for Retirement

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Latinos age 65 and older are twice as likely as whites to live in poverty, and Latinos 80 and older are the fastest growing segment of retirees in California, according to a new report from the University of California Berkeley. So the AARP has just released a new tool to help – an online health care cost calculator in Spanish. Adriana Mendoza, director of outreach programs for the AARP California, says AARP’s surveys show Latino adults are less prepared than the general public when it comes to health care costs. “More than 7 in 10 Latino adults ages 50 to 64 have not taken steps to plan for health care costs in retirement, she points out.

The free online tool shows you how various health conditions will affect your budget in retirement. The AARP’s Anai Ibarra says people often take their health for granted when planning for the future. “Many times they think, ‘All I need is the amount to live the life that I’ve been living right now,’ she says. “However, it is very important that they take into consideration that they are not going to be as healthy as they are right now. The online tool also helps motivate people to make the lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise and stress reduction, that might keep you stay healthy and thus lower the amount you have to pay for health care later in life.

Trump says his father gave him a ‘small’ $1 million loan

By Jill Colvin ATKINSON, N.H. (AP) - How about some humility, Donald Trump? At a rare town hall event Monday for a man who goes for big rallies, some potential voters wanted to see a common touch from the tower-building billionaire in his quest for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. He said in reply that he ate at McDonald’s on Sunday, often drives himself and got started in business with a “small loan” of $1 million from his dad. The event, a televised town hall broadcast live on the “Today” show, brought together about 125 registered voters in a country club ballroom. The intimate environment was a rarity for the GOP front-runner, who has generally eschewed small events in favor of rallies drawing thousands of rowdy and loyal backers. While a handful of questions addressed Trump’s policy positions, many focused on his persona as a brash TV entertainer and whether he possessed the ability to come back down to earth. “I know a lot of people would really want to vote for you if only you would eat a piece of humble pie once in a while,” said one woman, an undecided registered Republican, who

asked Trump whether he had any weaknesses he might share. “Well I’d like to do that,” Trump responded, “but then I’d expose the weaknesses to Putin and everybody else and we don’t want to do that, right?” He was referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. A n o t h e r q u e s t i o n e r, identified as an undecided Republican, asked Trump whether, with the exception of his family, he’d ever been told “no.” “I mean, my whole life really has been a ‘no,’” Trump said. “And I fought through it.” Trump is the son of a successful real estate developer who gave him seed money to begin investing in Manhattan real estate. “It has not been easy for me,” Trump added. “And I started off in Brooklyn, my father gave me a small loan of $1 million. I came into Manhattan and I had to pay him back, and I had to pay him back with interest.” Host Matt Lauer quickly noted that most voters would not consider $1 million a small amount. Unlike 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney, Trump has fully embraced his wealth in the campaign trail, often bragging about his riches, to little ill effect. Still, Trump did show some signs of relatability in talking about his recent fast-food stop

Trump was unapologetic. “Well I think they should,” he said, “because I built a great company.” Mark Casey, a registered independent, pressed the candidate on how he would deal with world leaders. “What would you say to people like me who have concern that you’ll be dealing with a lot of world leaders you might not see eye-to-eye with,

and you can’t fire them?” he asked. “But you could start a war by calling them a loser or an idiot.” Trump told Casey that he’d shown restraint throughout the campaign, an assertion bound to raise eyebrows from the political rivals who’ve been subjected to his zingers. He said he knows how to be politically correct when needed. Casey said afterward that Trump’s answer was just what he was looking to hear. “I think that’s what the country needs,” he said.

Cops need 4 trucks to transport SC man’s 7k weapons cache

By Desert Star Staff A South Carolina man has been arrested after amassing an arsenal of at least 7,000 handguns and rifles, as well as hunting crossbows, ammunition and more than 500 chainsaws, according to local law enforcement. Most of the items were likely stolen. Brent Nicholson, 51, of Pageland, South Carolina, stored a collection of weapons and other materials in his house, a nearby storage facility, his parents’ home and a liquor store he owns with his father, Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks told the Charlotte Observer. “There were so many guns we quit counting after a while,” Brooks said, adding that Nicholson’s collection could as include many as 10,000 firearms. In addition to weapons, authorities found taxidermied deer, elk, and alligator heads; hunting mounts; air compressors; four-wheelers; and various tools, most of which police believe Nicholson acquired illegally. He has been charged with possession of stolen property, Brooks said. “He was hoarding most of it, but it’s all stolen material from all over numerous counties and it’s going to take a lot to sort all this out,” Brooks said, according to WSOC-TV. Deputies found the cache of weapons on Friday, when they

arrived at Nicholson’s home to serve an unrelated subpoena, the sheriff said. Earlier in the week, Nicholson was arrested and charged with trafficking opium and heroin, according to WNCN. Chainsaws and a welder, which had previously been reported as stolen, were found “in plain sight” when the officers arrived, Brooks told the Observer. “They went to a judge and got a search warrant and went back to the house and found literally thousands of guns,” Brooks said. “They secured the scene and called everybody in.

We’ve been there ever since and we’ll probably be working on this into next week.” Many guns looked as if they had been in storage for years, the sheriff said. “There’s no evidence that he even used them,” Brooks said. “There’s no evidence that he was selling them ‒ he just wanted them. His house looked like that hoarders program on TV.” Brooks said many of the items were likely bought from thieves who had raided “homes, or hunting lodges, or cabins.” “There were five [neighboring county] sheriffs standing around

‒ all of us with at least 25 years of experience ‒ and none of us have ever seen anything like this,” Brooks said. “The SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) agents had never seen anything like this.” It took four 40-foot tractortrailers to take the weapons and the loot way. Helping Veterans apply skills, experience to business

By Desert Star Staff Of the 24 million veterans in the U.S., nearly one in 10 is a small business owner and veterans as a whole are 45 percent more likely than those with no military experience to be self-employed, according to U.S. Census Bureau Data. Experts say that these figures should come as no surprise. www.desertstarweekly.com

“When veterans reenter civilian life, they carry with them the discipline, hard work and strategic thinking acquired and developed during military service. They take pride in these skills and strive to use them during their next phase of life,” says Tim Davis, a veteran and president of The UPS Store, which offers a number of

initiatives designed to promote veteran entrepreneurship. “Veterans are extremely likely to be successful entrepreneurs. Sometimes the challenge is finding that opportunity.” Despite the bleak headlines regarding the variety of problems faced by returning veterans, The UPS Store is a good example of a business taking October 28, 2015

steps to change the dialogue and offer these entrepreneurial opportunities. For example, their participation in the Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative (VetFran) is helping veterans obtain the resources they need to become their own boss, and the results have been notable. In fact, of the 4,400 UPS Stores, 250 are owned by veterans. Other programs sponsored by various universities and the U.S. Small Business Administration are offering returning veterans training and mentoring, grants, and access to business development opportunities. Davis, who believes military skills easily translate to the business world, encourages other corporations and organizations to begin similar measures in their operations. This Veterans’ Day, celebrated November 11, is a good time to learn more. Visit www.theupsstorefranchise. com. Tips for Keeping Trick-or-Treating Children Safe on Halloween

Safe Kids Worldwide has some easy and effective tips for drivers and parents to make sure all ghosts and goblins can trick-or-treat safely. Credit: Viafilms/iStockphoto By Desert Star Staff DENVER - Halloween can be one of the best nights of the year for children across America. But for parents, it can be nervewracking. On average, twice as many children are killed on Halloween than any other day of the year according to the child safety organization Safe Kids Worldwide. Kate Carr, the group’s president and CEO, says by taking a few simple precautions,

children, parents and especially drivers can make the night fun and safe. “Slow down, turn your lights on early,” says Carr. “Don’t be a distracted driver, because you know kids are just going to be excited and running around. Just be especially alert, especially if you’re backing out of a driveway, that a small child might be darting out behind you.” Carr says drivers should be extra cautious in residential

neighborhoods between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the most popular trick-or-treating hours. She says get rid of anything that prevents you from concentrating on the road, that means no phone calls and definitely no texting. Carr notes 12 percent of children five years old or younger trick-or-treat without adult supervision. She says on a night where candy is flowing freely, children get so excited it’s easy to October 28, 2015

forget about crossing the street safely. Carr says it’s important for parents to talk with their children before Halloween night. “Have a conversation, remind them to look leftright-left, to be on the alert for drivers,” says Carr. “And younger kids under the age of 10 don’t necessarily understand speed and the distance of a car that’s traveling. So parents, join your kids for trick or treating night.”

Carr says flashlights and glow sticks can help make children more visible to drivers, and decorating costumes and bags with reflective tape is also a good idea. And she says whenever possible choose face paint instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Faux Fur Ball raises funds and awareness

By Pamela Price The Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter’s Faux-Fur Ball II Puttin’ On the Leash, of which Harold Matzner was a Platinum Sponsor, was a barkingly successful event as over 200 guests mingled with cats and dogs eager to be adopted. The elegant dinner catered by Lulu California Bistro was staged at the Shelter reflecting their policy of serving vegan or vegetarian fare. This wise decision resulted in a marvelous dinner opening with a ‘crisp tofu on mintavocado salad’ and vegan bread, with olive oil and balsamic at each table. The program began, under the stars, with Stephen S. Boyd, President of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, welcoming guests followed by Tamara Hedges, Vice-President of the Shelter, with introductions and a volunteer’s story told by Bruce Teris, on the Board of Directors. Joanne Worley, President of Actors and Others for Animals was presented with the “Friends for Life Award.” Earlier in the evening, the honoree told me about Harmony, her rescue

C E N T E R S TA G E Rajiv Joseph’s “Guards at the Taj” at The Geffen Playhouse WITH BEVERLY COHN

Humayun tells his friend his horrible punishment is better than death. Photo by Michael Lamont Rajiv Joseph’s Guards at the Taj, in its west coast premiere at The Geffen Playhouse, is an intriguing, sometimes absurdist, sometimes shocking, and sometimes-gory journey of two men who have been friends since childhood. Joseph, whose Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for drama several years ago, is a master of illuminating the contradictions of the human condition. He can quite easily be part of that elite Theatre of the Absurd group of playwrights, the most famous of which are Harold Pinter, Eugene Ionesco, and of course, Samuel Beckett, whose Waiting for Godot stands as one of the most famous pieces of theatre to come out of that genre. Historically, this theatrical movement began as a reaction to World War II. Its foundation was existential philosophy, which combined theatrical elements to present a point of view that flew in the face of logic. In that same tradition, Guards at the Taj illuminates perhaps some of the darkest parts of human behavior, from betrayal to blind obedience.* Set in the 17th the century in Agra, India, Humayun, (Raffi Barsoumian) and Babur (Ramiz Monsef) are two low-level members of the Mughal Imperial Guards whose assignment is to guard the entrance to the newly constructed Taj Mahal. The more serious Humayun is the son of

a high-ranking general and tries very hard to obey his vow of silence, and to never look at the newly constructed mansion. This becomes a challenge as Babur, his best friend since childhood, has a much harder time with keeping quiet. He has a child-like curiosity and is easily distracted, (think ADD.) He bombards his silent friend with observations of the world around him, including wanting to know the species of birds that chirp off in the distance. He wonders about the stars and in his streamof-consciousness ramblings, dreams about building a flying machine called an “Aeroplot” or creating a “transportable hole.” The two friends actually argue over how you get inside the hole and discuss the merits of these ridiculous inventions in a most serious manner. Babur has an overriding ambition and that is to be a guard in the Imperial Royal Harem where, “I could be around beautiful young girls every day.” Humayun cautions him that death is the punishment for looking at the girls and assures him that they would never be chosen for that plum assignment anyway. Standing at attention at the front gate, Humayun also begins to speak, and they discuss the fact that it took 20,000 men sixteen years to build this magnificent edifice. Both are sure that the head architect and the workers will be handsomely

In a scene from “Guards at the Taj” on stage at the Geffen Playhouse, Humayun (Raffi Barsoumian) entreats his friend Babur (Ramiz Monsef) to keep his vow of silence. Photo by Michael Lamont rewarded for their superior work. That old adage comes to mind, “Curiosity killed the cat,” and in the case of our two young men, eventually they can no longer resist looking at the building and turning around, they sneak a peak. It’s here that the playwright gives us a double existential whammy. First, instead of a sincere thank you from the king, a fate awaits the architect and his workers that is not quite what they expect. His decree that “nothing as beautiful as the Taj Mahal can ever be built again,” results in a “reward” that must be classified as an unthinkable act of wanton sadism. As their punishment for looking at the forbidden building, the two friends are given the assignment to carry out the king’s monstrous wishes, which they willingly execute because, well, they were told to so. After the deed is done, they actually argue about who should get more credit for the carnage. Initially they justify their actions by saying they were just following orders, a familiar theme we heard at the Nuremberg Trials, which, following World War II, put Nazis on trial for The Holocaust and other war crimes. Because of how efficiently they carried out the king’s command, the young sentinels are appointed to a new post – Guards of the Imperial Harem. Presently though, despite this coveted promotion, doubts begin to fester in Babur’s mind and he

comes to the conclusion that he has killed beauty and feels compelled to seek revenge. His threats do not serve him well and Humayun is fearful of what punishment will befall his conflicted friend. To illustrate their close bond, Joseph wrote a very tender scene where Humayun takes loving care of the overwrought Babur. He removes his stained clothes, gently washes him, and assists him in putting on fresh clothing. Despite his caring, and tenderness, eventually Humayun is placed in an unthinkable position. This is not exactly a “spoiler alert,” but to use the words shocking and gory again would not be overstating the gruesome action that ensues. Under the commanding direction of Giovanna Sardelli, there is never a lost beat in either the action or the dialogue. She deftly guided her actors, both of whom do a brilliant job with their respective characterizations. This is an occasional edge-ofyour seat experience as this is not an easy play. However, in his brilliance as a writer, Joseph has interwoven lots of comedic moments prior to unveiling the heinous acts. The visual effects are perfect with special kudos to the awesome, multiple set designs by Tom Buderwitz. His vision is beautifully enhanced by Lap Chi Chu’s lighting design, Denitsa Bliznakova’s period costumes, and Vincent Olivieri’s original music and sound. All the

artistic elements work together in creating a pitch-perfect, compelling, mind-bending, 90-minute, unforgettable theatrical experience. *Blind obedience behavior was explored in a recent film called Experimenter. The true story revolves around Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard) a Yale University professor who designed a psychology experiment whereby a “teacher” (a stooge) administers shocks to a “student” each time he answers a question incorrectly, with each shock becoming incrementally more powerful. The “teacher” is instructed not stop the experiment no matter how much the “student” pleads, illustrating how people will carry out sadistic instructions when commanded to do so. Sadly, we continue to see man committing unspeakable acts of violence every day under instructions from their “king.” The Audrey Skirball Theatre The Geffen Playhouse 10866 Le Conte Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90024 Run: Tuesdays-Fridays: 8:00pm Saturdays: 3:00pm & 8:00pm Sunday: 2:00pm: & 7:00pm Closing: Sunday, November 15, 2015 Tickets $60-82 310.208.5454 or www.geffenplayhouse.com

FILM ‘My Fair Lady’: 50th Anniversary Edition’ BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

It is hard to believe that it’s been fifty years since the film version of the Broadway smash hit “My Fair Lady” arrived on the silver screen. Directed by George Cukor, “My Fair Lady” won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Now five decades after its original release this charming musical, based on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” is back in a special Blu-ray edition. On Oct. 27th generations of movie fans, too young to have seen the musical when it first appeared in theaters, can enjoy this charming story about an elitist linguistic professor, Henry Higgins, played by Rex Harrison, who sings the witty “Why Can’t

The English Teach Their Children How to Speak?” On a wager with his colleague Colonel Pickering, Higgins boasts that he can transform a sassy, cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) into the toast of English society. She is reluctant at first, but soon she is tirelessly studying how to speak perfect English and demonstrates her newly acquired abilities as she sings “The Rain In Spain,” which according to the lively song lyrics “falls mainly on the plain.” The costumes, designed by Cecil Beaton, are beautiful and the elegant, doe eyed beauty Hepburn knows how to

wear them. After the ball where she convinces people she is a princess. she sings “I Could Have Danced All Night.” Another hit, sung by Eliza’s cockney dad, is “Get Me to the Church on Time.” The “My Fair Lady: 50th Anniversary Edition” arrives in collectible packaging with an entire Blu-ray disc dedicated to 90 minutes of special features, including a variety of original trailers and featurettes that were used in theaters to promote the film, as well as footage from the film’s Los Angeles and British premieres in 1964. The film is rated G and would make a delightful holiday present.

The Libretto by Marshall Brickman (Woody Allen’s old writing partner) and Rick Elise, with music by Andrew Lippa, is nicely directed by Shafik Wahab, and features a stellar cast of twenty-one actor/singers/ dancers that just light up the stage with energy and stunning costumes. It may help, but it’s not necessary to be familiar with the

old sanitized source material. This new version has now been spiced up with topical jokes, a few risqué situations, dialogue, and inside jokes that one expects of a musical farce production, but nothing that would send grandma screaming into the night. “The Addams Family” has been designed and produced to entertain in a zany and hilarious style which hits the mark. The story, such as it is, begins as always: normal boy (Matt Sambrano) with traditional, conservative parents, meets non-conforming daughter (Rachel Saiz) of a definitely

Their onstage chemistry is downright palpable and it’s delightful to see two professionals doing their thing with flair, precise comedy timing, along with beautifully trained voices and acting skills. Saiz, who plays Wednesday the Addams’ oldest child is the possessor of a lovely voice with good comedy timing. Sambrano, as Lucas, the object of Wednesday’s ardor, gets to play her hero. Julie Rosser as Alice, Lucas’ mother is always a standout, talented singer and actor. Ron Coronado as Alice’s stuffed shirt husband Mal, is properly up-tight (until near the end). Grandma played by Morgana Corelli, gets a huge laugh with her song and line

delivery”…When I break wind, the windmills in the Dutch paintings on the walls begin to turn.” Jacob Samples as Uncle Fester, is nothing like an avuncular family Uncle who is only let out of his room for special occasions. He’s more like the family court jester who communicates with of the family’s dead relatives. All of whom are gorgeously costumed by long-time professional costume designer and actor Peter Mins. The cast literally sparkles and glow is his designs (the costumes alone are worth the price of admission). Young Daniel Harris shows a lot of poise on stage as Wednesday’s young, chubby and irritating brother Pugsley. He’s the kind of kid audiences love to hate. “The Addams Family” production and technical credits team is led by director Wahab. The cast get to sing and dance in a generous set designed by resident Scenic Design wizard J.W.Layne, who also designed the lights for the production. It’s a pity that “The Adams Family” only runs through Sunday, November 1st. So, you had better hurry to buy tickets for this highly entertaining evening in the theatre. For tickets and information call the Palm Canyon Theatre Box Office at 760-3235123.

Test finds human DNA in hot dogs, meat in vegetarian products By Desert Star Staff One of the most American foods could also be one of the most human. A food testing authority using cutting-edge genetic testing has found human DNA in some samples of hot dogs, and meat was found in a shocking number of vegetarian substitutes. Clear Food, a company that genetically tests food products, analyzed 345 hot dogs and sausages from 75 different brands, and found that 14 percent had hygienic issues or had ingredients that were not displayed on the product label. Two percent of the samples tested positive for human DNA, and a whopping 66 percent of vegetarian hot dogs contained evidence of such contamination. “One thing’s certain: questions about the hot dog are as old as the hot dog itself. And they’re not wholly unwarranted,” the report said. Other shocking findings

involved vegetarian meat substitute products. Ten percent of vegetarian hot dogs and sausages were found to contain meat. Evidence of chicken was found in 10 samples, beef in four samples, turkey in three samples, and lamb in two samples that were supposed to be meat-free. Pork is a particular concern as an unlabeled substituted ingredient, due to dietary prohibitions in Islam and Judaism. Pork substitution was reported to be an issue in products across the price spectrum being sold at a wide variety of retailers. Clear Food found pork substitution in 3 percent of the samples that were tested. In most cases, pork found its way into chicken and turkey sausages. Clear Food is a company that “translates quantifiable molecular tests into actionable food data insights,” according to its website. That just means it uses genetic sequencing to figure out just what’s in your lunch.

The company noted that while the issues they were raised are not necessarily violations of FDA rules, they are providing a service to help people make decisions based on their own

preferences, not that of a government regulator. “While some of these substitutions, hygienic issues, other variances, or off-label ingredients may be permitted by

the FDA, our scientific disclosure allows you, as the consumer, to decide whether the variance or problems meet your personal standard in your buying decision,” Clear Food said.

MUSIC American music greats issue top-tier albums BY ROBERT KINSLER

American music is front and center on the latest albums from indie alt-country rockers Supersuckers, singer-songwriter Peter Case, Southern rock giants Lynyrd Skynyrd and songstress Danielle Nicole.

Qatar Airways Los Angeles Pop-Up Event is a Huge Success By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, CA.- Thousands of Los Angeles residents turned out to enjoy the “Discover Qatar Airways” popup event, hosted throughout the weekend at The Grove. The unique event celebrated the upcoming daily, nonstop service between Hamad International Airport in Doha and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), scheduled to commence on January 1st, 2016. Guests of all ages enjoyed a luxurious Qatar Airways experience from start to finish, including an award-winning Business Class seat display, Arabic food tastings, and musical entertainment from around the world. “In advance of the launch of our services to LAX beginning on January 1st, we chose to provide Los Angeles residents with a taste of our five-star service and amenities,” said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker. “The response

has been incredible and Los Angeles residents have been very welcoming. It is very important for us to engage with all the local communities that we serve and showcase our award-wining hospitality and provide them with a taste of Qatar Airways.” Guests at The Grove enjoyed testing out the Business Class seat, sampling cuisine from the award-winning inflight menu and experiencing the renowned hospitality of Qatar Airways. The national airline of the State of Qatar also used the event to highlight its diverse network of 152 destinations around the world. Arabic, African and Bollywood dance routines were among the highlights and children enjoyed henna art, mosaic box crafting, a coloring wall and Instagram-ready photo booth. On Friday evening, the airline also hosted a VIP reception, featuring a live performance by Judith Hill, a stand-out contestant on NBC’s “The Voice”. Throughout the weekend,

Qatar Airways also gave out lavish prizes, including Economy and Business Class tickets and even passes to Z100’s sold-out Jingle Ball. LA social media was abuzz with the popular “Spot the Qrew” contest, where LA residents had to search for and find Qatar Airways cabin crew members around the city, using clues on Facebook and Twitter. Lucky followers received roundtrip tickets on the airline to any destination in the network. In addition to launching a daily service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Doha’s Hamad International Airport (DOH) on January 1st, 2016, Qatar Airways will be opening new U.S. gateways in Boston on March 16th and Atlanta on June 1st, 2016. The airline is already preparing similar pre-launch events in both cities, after the success and overwhelming popularity of the LA event.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this Internet Web http://search.nationwideposting.com/ propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA1500268212 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. 6 Tips to Freshen Up Your Bathroom

By Desert Star Staff Some people hop in the shower first thing in the morning. Others prefer to save the experience for winding down at the end of the day. No matter your preference, there are a number of ways to easily transform your shower space into a productive, relaxing oasis. Here are six ideas to improve your shower, all of which can be completed in the time it takes for you to lather, rinse and repeat. • Clean Up Your Space: A clean, well-organized shower sets the tone for a truly relaxing experience. Declutter by installing

shelves or storage pieces. Some shelves and accessories can pull double-duty, featuring bath safety elements like grab bars to make your shower safer and clutterfree. • Home Spa Experience: Set the mood with music. Install a fan or light that also contains a Bluetooth speaker. For example, Home Netwerks offers an option that even allows you to select the lighting based on your mood. Switch between white LED or soft blue light to set the perfect scene. • Maximize Relaxation: Consider replacing your existing showerhead with an option that

By Desert Star Staff Selecting, preparing and cooking the centerpiece of your family’s Thanksgiving meal can pile on a lot of stress. However there are some easy ways to simplify the process. “There are a lot of great choices, but they can certainly be overwhelming during a busy holiday,” says Theo Weening, Global Meat Buyer for Whole Foods Market. Here are seven basic rules to ensure you have the perfect turkey for your holiday meal. 1. Plan ahead: Frozen turkeys can take several days to fully thaw. The safest method is by placing it on a tray in its packaging to catch drips, and put it in the refrigerator on the lowest shelf. Plan for one full day of thawing for every five pounds of turkey. If you’re short on time, put your turkey in a leakproof wrapper and submerge it completely in cold tap water. The water should be changed every 30 minutes. Plan for 30 minutes of thawing time per pound. 2. Research: There are many different types of turkey to choose from. Some grocers carry a variety of birds and additionally have in-house butcher experts behind the counter to help you choose what is right for your taste and budget. Here are the five types of turkey found at Whole Foods Market:

• Organic: fed organic feed (that means no GMOs, among other things) and given access to the outdoors. • Classic: known for their trifecta of flavor, quality, and value. • Heritage: rich, succulent, old-world breeds cherished for flavor. • Heirloom: robust flavor with a higher percentage of dark meat. • Kosher: certified kosher. 3. Size matters: A good rule of thumb is to buy 1.5 pounds of turkey per person, providing everyone a healthy portion while allowing for those sought after leftovers. 4. Read the label: The best birds are raised with the highest standards. This means no antibiotics, no animal byproducts in their feed, no added solutions or injections and no added growth hormones. To make it simple, shop at a store that only carries turkeys raised with these standards, such as Whole Foods Market. Their turkeys are also 5-Step Animal Welfare rated. 5. Brine: Soaking turkey in a saltwater solution for four to 24 hours before roasting keeps it tender and juicy. Try a brine kit for a simple and easy recipe. 6. T ime it: It takes approximately 13 minutes per pound to cook a turkey at 350

offers multiple spray settings, like the new Magnetix hand showers from Moen, which feature six high-performance spray options, ranging from massage to combinations of soft and forceful, full-rinse sprays. A powerful magnetic dock allows for easy release and replace of the showerhead, so that even with your eyes closed, there’s no need to interrupt your Zen. • Sit Down: Sitting down in the shower is another way to relax while you scrub. For ladies, a shower seat will reduce the strain you put on your back and neck while shaving, and also

help prevent spills and falls in the shower. If you’re short on space, look for a model that folds down to provide a seat when you need it and then neatly tucks away when you don’t. • Maximize Space: A curved shower rod is another great addition for smaller showers. Check out Moen’s curved rods, which provide up to seven inches of additional space inside the shower, and come in a variety of styles and finishes to match any décor. • Beautify Your Surroundings: A bit of greenery can perk up any room. Add plants to give the illusion of a lush outdoor experience. A philodendron is a perfect option because it doesn’t need soil and can thrive in smaller containers. Bringing aromatic plants into the shower can also help calm the mind. Cut a few sprigs of eucalyptus or lavender and keep them in the shower. As it fills up with steam, the fragrance will carry throughout the room. Take a deep breath and say ah… In a hectic world, take a minute to pamper yourself whenever possible. A relaxing shower will help you tackle anything your day throws at you -- or have you prepped for a good night’s sleep. Don’t underestimate the power of your shower! StatePoint

Pasadena’s A Noise Within Theatre Presents “All My Sons”

Rafael Goldstein (Chris Keller) and Deborah Strang (Kate Keller). © Photo by Craig Schwartz By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic A Noise Within (ANW) Theatre production of Arthur Miller’s powerful drama “All My Sons”, opened on the actual date and year of Miller’s 100 year annivesary. He was born on October 17, 1915. It was a good omen. A Noise Within theatre company is one of California’s finest production companies that present, in repertory, mainly classic theatrical productions along with iconic American playwrights like Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Eugene O’Neill. ANW’s Fall 2015 Repertory Season consists of Feydeau’s classic farce “A Flea in Her Ear”, and Anouilh’s “Antigone” along with Miller’s “All My Sons”. Arthur Miller is one America’s greatest playwrights and one who understood the term ‘experiencing the unique American dream’; along with its melting pot cultural contributions that are woven throughout his work. Miller and Paddy Chayefsky, arguably two of the finest writers with the greatest ‘ears’ for dialogue of workingclass America, along with the argot and speech patterns of the immigrant populations that swept out Europe and into the east coast of America’s urban cities during the early 20th century. Where Miller and Chayefsky captured the flavor and speech of northern urban America, Williams understood and wrote his dialogue profiling the strength of Southern women. America went to war in 1941, but not all of America. There were those who had to stay at home and man the war industries of building airplanes, ships and the weapons of war. “All My Sons”, nicely directed by ANW co-founder Geoff Elliott

centers around the Keller family of a fictional Ohio city set in 1946. Joe Keller (Geoff Elliott) a businessman and owner of a manufacturing company that supplied airplane engine parts to the government during the war is caught up in a scandal surrounding the deaths of twenty-one pilots whose planes crashed due to faulty engine parts. Keller during the investigation, blames his partner and next-door neighbor Steve Deever for knowingly shipping the faulty parts. Keller, is exonerated while Deever serves a long prison sentence. Elliott delivers a finely judged performance as Joe. Some may come to the performance expecting to see a Lee J. Cobb interpretation (he created the role on Broadway) or Edward G. Robinson’s disciplined turn in the movie version. No matter your expectation, you will leave the theatre knowing you saw the plight of a real family in crisis mode. Kate Keller (Deborah Strang) plays Joe’s wife and the mother of Chris (Rafael Goldstein) and older son Larry, a WW II fighter pilot who has been listed as MIA, and presumed dead by the government. She is living in a state of denial concerning her missing son Larry. She refuses to believe he’s dead. Family and friends know better but no one wants to be the one that sends Kate over the edge. Strang’s heart-rending final scene is achingly poignant and connects emotionally with every parent in the audience. The Kellers are a flawed family with secrets that ultimately set in motion a series of confrontations between father, son, and mother, along with their neighbors, that even affect Ann Deever (Maegan McConnell) Larry’s old girlfriend.

But the sticking point in accepting Larry’s death and Ann becoming a daughter-in-law to Kate, is the public acknowledgment and acceptance of Joe’s culpability in the death of his older son Larry. Neither parent can face or process that information. It’s just too painful. Solid support comes from Rafael Goldstein as Chris, Maegan McConnell as Ann, and a nicely controlled performance from Aaron Blakely as George Deever (a role that can easily get too intense, if one is not careful). Miller was heavily influenced by the great Greek playwrights

a thing about ourselves or that nothing in society has changed in the intervening years. The technical team credits led by Director Elliott are first rate. Scenic Designer Frederica Nascimento provides a generous space for the actors to perform their magic under lights designed by James Taylor; allowing us to see the spot-on period costumes designed by Leah Piehl. Audiences, however, should be prepared to fasten their seatbelts while watching this potently performed production. “All My Sons”, performs in repertory at A Noise Within theatre through November 21, 2015.

Sophocles and Aeschylus, who dealt with the Gods and the tragedy that befalls the ‘common man’ when he steps out of line. Joe Keller is one of Miller’s common men, caught up in a situation that is of his own making, but whose actions set off a domino effect producing collateral damage to those around him. “All My Sons” is realistically mounted on ANW’s thrust stage and is energetically and intensely performed by a talented company of actors. Even today, the story of the flawed Keller family dealing with deep-rooted conflicts still resonates sixty-nine years later. That sort of tells us that either we haven’t learned
