Forever-young Susan Anton
Story and Photos by Pat Krause Susan Anton was a big hit at the Purple Room in Palm Springs on Friday and Saturday nights, Sept 11th and 12th and a Sunday Brunch on the 13th. She sang to a full house of diners and fans. This beautiful woman has been a star for many years. She doesn’t look her age as she is going to be 65 soon. I wonder what her secret is to stay so youthful and vivacious. It must be doing what you love to do and be so good at it. Susan is multi talented and has had a career as a singer, a TV, Broadway and movie star, a Miss California runner up and Model plus starring in a Las Vegas show. She was also the star in the Palm Springs Follies one season. Susan made a name for herself early on as a spokesperson for Muriel Cigars and could as well be seen in Serta Mattress ads. Susan had her own variety show on TV and has won many awards. Susan
is still doing what she does best, and that is singing to her audience. She sang some songs from her early years, including the first song she sang on stage at age 15. Her voice is amazing as she can sing a variety of slow and uptempo songs. One of the songs she sang brought a standing ovation as it was a tribute song to 911 and those that lost their lives that day. The restaurant was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop during that song particular emotional for everyone attending. This is just the second of many performances by talented singers soon. I noticed another celebrity in attendance to support this concert. This is such an intimate area where you can really get close to see the star performing. The upside to this is the delicious food and cleverly named drinks. The service is great as there are enough waiters to wait on everyone in a timely manner.

three-dollar mark. According to the website ‘Gasbuddy.com,’ the cheapest price in the valley tonight is $2.95 at the Costco and Sam’s Club in Palm Desert. Unfortunately, it’s not allgood news. The state average for a gallon of gas is still $0.85 higher than the national
average. Although the decrease is expected to continue, valley residents are upset about the high prices. “I think they are pretty high and obviously with someone on a budget we are feeling it.” Palm Desert Resident Roel De Los Santos said. According to AAA, we pay more because we have a special formulation of gas that is not used in other places in the world. The reason for the recent high prices is the Exxon Mobil Refinery explosion in Torrance. “It is pretty much off-line, producing about maybe 20% of capacity right now,” Spokesman of California Automobile Club Jeffrey Spring said. According to experts, the Exxon Mobil Refinery in Torrance may be starting up its old processing plant that did not blow up. This would bump up production by 80 percent and drop prices even more, Spring added. Source KMIR September 16, 2015
a video of the incident on a TV running all the time outside in the driveway. They had their own private video that was shown too. They had a letter enlarged to show how and why they got the, I-beam. This event is held each year to commemorate this awful event in our history. Driving by the home guests could see the many flags lit up on the lawn. The home was lit up and at 8 PM two huge searchlights could be seen across the valley. Chairs were set up in front of
the TV screen so guests could watch the video in comfort. There was a lot of information of the event so people could see and remember those that perished that day and those brave people that were involved in the rescue efforts, many that also lost their lives. They had a flag that had all the names of those that died laid across a table. Just to see the, I-beam was emotional as I think we all remember that terrible day watching it unfold on our TVs and not being able to believe it could really have happened to our country.

isn’t very interested in money matters and takes life as it comes. They donot think much about money, nor want to be bothered with creating financial plans. The way you think about money will determine how much of it you accumulate and your financial independence more than any other factor. Your attitude toward money affects your emotions and your motivations. In psychology, money is what is called a “deficiency need.” This means that it motivates you when you feel deficient in it. Above a certain level, when you feel that you have enough, it is no longer a motivator. Put another way, when you have enough money, you don’t think about it very much, but when you have too little, you think about it all the time. The Reality Principle and how it applies to matters of money, states that, “You must deal with life as it is, not as you wish it were, or could be.” Most people live in a world of partial self-delusion, with regard to money. Many people believe quite impossible things about money and then they wonder why they are having so many financial problems. The fact is that money is good. It takes money to buy homes, cars, clothes, food and most of the good things in life. Money has an energy of its own. It is largely attracted to people who treat it well. Money tends
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: Is it a conflict of interest to have a homeowner be the manager? As the President of a small HOA I was asked this question. I believe it would be a conflict. Can you shed some light on this? D.M., Riverside Dear D.M.: When a homeowner becomes an association vendor, that dual relationship can create problems. When that vendor is also the association manager, that risk increases. How does one run the association’s day to day business without considering their interests as
a homeowner? And how do you negotiate compensation with that neighbor? When the neighbor begins to perform unsatisfactorily, who is going to fire that neighbor? When associations do business with an owner, there will be some who question whether the owner/manager is being fair to the association, or favoring their own building over others. And, no matter how little the member is charging the association, it will always be too much to some. Bluntly, hiring one of your neighbors as a manager is a bad idea for both the neighbor and the association. Spend the money to hire an experienced and credentialed association manager. It is worth the cost. Best, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson: A director has been on the board for years and he is not on the deed for their home in the association. His wife is. He is trying to put through a vote to replace me with himself and his wife. What can I do? Thank you, V.T., Santa Rosa September 16, 2015
Dear V.T.: Board eligibility is normally stated in the bylaws. If a director is required to be an owner of record (not all bylaws require this), then a recorded deed must show the director as owner. Some bylaws do not require directors to be owners. Others do not require ownership “of record” but only ownership, so sometimes an owner will claim membership rights based upon a copy of an unrecorded deed from their spouse. Unless there is a board vacancy created by resignation, the members fill board seats. If the spouse is eligible to serve as a director, and the members elect her, so be it. If you are eligible, and are currently serving as a director, only a quorum of the members can remove or replace you. Best regards, Kelly Kelly, I have [multiple] homes in a community and all of the homes are rented. I have one tenant that does not use the facilities. I have been told that I cannot use the facilities since I am not a resident but I pay dues on three homes and the one tenant relinquished
their right for the use of the facilities. Is there anything I can do? This does not seem fair. Respectfully, A.N., Corona
Dear A.N.: What you are referring to is “severance” of common area use rights from the ownership rights in the residence. Associations typically do not allow such severance, and require that the right to occupy the residence not be separated from the right to use common area. The right of associations to prohibit this severance was upheld in the 1995 appellate case of Liebler v. Point Loma Tennis Club. It is fair, because tenants normally need to use common area to access their home in the association. Thanks, Kelly Kelly G. Lion’s Demise Shines Light on Captive Hunting in IN By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS – The killing of a beloved lion by an American hunter in Africa sparked global outrage this summer, and it’s also bringing to light the issue of captive, or canned, hunting in Indiana and other states. In these hunts, shooters pay to kill animals trapped behind fences. In other countries, exotic animals are the prey, but in Indiana, deer are hunted. Erin Huang, Indiana state director of the Humane Society of the United States, says these animals are farm-raised, fed at intervals and not really given a fair shot at survival. “While there have been escapes, certainly, which is one of the big issues and one of fears that people have with the spread of disease, the animals are contained within these fenced enclosures so they don’t really have a way to escape the
hunter – and in some instances they may be so accustomed to people that maybe they don’t even run,” she points out. Chronic Wasting Disease is among the disease concerns because it’s more likely to spread within contained deer populations than wild populations. Currently, four canned hunting preserves are operating in Indiana under a court injunction. And recently a Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the facilities, stating that the Indiana Department of Natural Resources did not have the authority to ban captive-hunting operations. Huang says the industry has been working to legalize captive hunting for nearly a decade, but efforts have failed. But there hasn’t been much progress on the other side. This year, a bill (S.B. 442)
Four captive-hunting preserves in Indiana are operating under a court injunction. Credit: Eric Berthe/Morguefile to ban the practice did not get a hearing. Huang is hopeful lawmakers will try again in 2016 so Hoosiers can have a say in the matter. “It at least should get a
hearing and it should allow people to come and testify and give their opinions on this,” she stresses. “This isn’t something that Indiana needs to be known for. We have so many great
things to offer in this state.” Huang adds that a survey in 2010 found the majority of Indiana voters (80 percent) were against captive hunts of deer, elk and other large animals.
By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – A New York State Supreme Court justice has denied a petition to free Hercules and Leo, two research chimpanzees at the State University at Stony Brook. Animal rights advocates argue that chimps are intelligent, self-aware, autonomous beings. And though Judge Barbara Jaffe said she was bound by precedent to rule that the chimps are legally considered property, Steven Wise, president of the Nonhuman Rights Project, which filed the petition, says Jaffe’s decision broke new ground. “For the first time, it found
that a human organization had standing to sue on behalf of a nonhuman animal,” he points out. “She rejected the so-called slippery slope argument that if you gave rights to a chimpanzee, then you’d start having to give rights to other animals.” Stony Brook says the chimps are no longer needed and will be leaving the university soon. But Wise says if the chimps don’t go to an appropriate sanctuary, the Nonhuman Rights Project will request that the court block any move while it appeals Jaffe’s ruling. Similar lawsuits seeking freedom for Tommy and Kiko, two other chimps in New York,
have been unsuccessful at the lower court levels. But Wise says the final words of Jaffe’s 33-page ruling give hope that success will come someday soon. “‘For now, however, given the precedent to which I am bound, it is hereby ordered that the petition for a writ of habeas corpus is denied,’” Wise relates. “I think that shows you that she’s thinking that there may indeed be another day.” Last March, the Nonhuman Rights Project asked New York’s highest court to review the rulings in Tommy and Kiko’s cases. Those cases are still pending.

Court Overturns EPA’s Approval of Bee-Killing Pesticide By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO - An agricultural pesticide that has been linked to the collapse of bee colonies soon may be off the market. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled Thursday that the Environmental Protection Agency was wrong to approve sulfoxaflor because the agency’s studies couldn’t prove the pesticide is safe for bees. “Even the E PA
acknowledged that it is highly toxic to bees,” said Michele Colopy, program director of the Pollinator Stewardship Council, one of the groups that filed the suit. “They just hoped that they could mitigate the risk by label guidelines and things, which never really works terribly well.” Agro-chemical companies blame bee deaths on a combination of factors, including disease and predators. Experts say that if the bees die off, they’d

take a third of this country’s crops with them. California’s $3 billion almond crop, for example, is entirely dependent on bees for pollination. Colopy also lauded the decision because it stated that sulfoxaflor is part of a subclass of neonicotinoids that are thought to be harmful to bees - which means other, similar pesticides might be scrutinized next. “We are hoping this will encourage EPA to tighten up their Tier 2 testing,” she said, “and to start looking at some of these other products where maybe they had some flawed data that they collected.” The California Department of Pesticide Regulation granted temporary permission to use sulfoxaflor on a limited basis this summer, but has not signed off on widespread use. Regardless, sulfoxaflor will become illegal nationwide in 45 days, unless pesticide manufacturers request a new hearing or appeal to the Supreme Court. September 16, 2015

Right-to-Die Clears Major Hurdle in California By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Terminally ill Californians may soon have the right to get a prescription to end their lives. The end-of-life option act – ABX2 15 – passed the state Assembly on Wednesday, and now the state Senate has until the end of the legislative session tomorrow night to vote on it. Senators passed a similar bill in June, so supporters are optimistic. Toni Broaddus, California campaign director with Compassion and Choices, says Golden State residents should
be able to avoid the pain, suffering and loss of autonomy that often comes at the end of a terminal illness. “Californians should not have to leave their homes and move to another state in order to ensure they can die peacefully when they’re suffering from a terminal illness, she says. Opponents argue it is morally wrong to assist a suicide, and worry this would eventually lead to laws allowing the option for those who wish to die – but are not terminally ill. If the bill were signed into law, California would become the fourth state to allow
physician-assisted suicide. Broaddus says no one takes this option lightly. “No one who wants this option actually wants to die, she says. “They’re already dying. The terminal illness is killing them. So for those folks, this is not suicide. This is an option to have a peaceful death. The bill requires a report from the state Department of Public Health every year on the implementation. The bill would sunset after 10 years, meaning it would need to be re-evaluated and re-approved at that time.

Who Pays for Earthquake Retrofits? Taxpayers
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Supporters of a bill to give tax credits to landlords for earthquake. Assembly Bill 428 would
cover 30 percent of the cost if the retrofit work is done in the next five years retrofitting are hoping for a vote in the California State Senate before the legislative
session ends on Friday. Larry Gross, who heads the nonprofit Coalition for Economic Survival, supports the tax credit. He explains it would take some of the pressure off landlords,
who would then have a smaller burden to pass on to their tenants. “We need to address the threat of earthquake, says Gross, “but we don’t want to create an economic earthquake for a tenant who won’t be able to afford this increase, and will likely be displaced from their home. The issue is coming to a head in part because the Los Angeles City Council is expected to unveil a plan this week or next to require earthquake retrofitting in about 1,500 of the buildings considered most vulnerable. That plan targets buildings that include what is known as “softstory construction – a large, open space on the bottom floor, such as a parking area or commercial businesses with big windows – that have collapsed in past quakes.
By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a nod to the legalization of same-sex marriage, Florida marriage certificates and license applications will change, starting today, to read “spouse and “spouse instead of “bride and “groom. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Florida since Jan. 6, and nationwide since the U.S. Supreme Court decision in June.
Terry DeCarlo, executive director of the GLBT Center of Central Florida in Orlando, applauds the change, saying it’s a matter of equality and respect. “Of course, it needed to be done, he states. “The marriage certificates before said ‘bride’ and ‘groom.’ When you have a same-sex marriage, there isn’t a bride and a groom. There is a spouse and a spouse, a bride and a bride, a groom and a groom, so it just should have
been ‘spouse’ and ‘spouse.’ Simple as that. The Bureau of Vital Statistics says the change had to go through an administrative process that took some time. But DeCarlo says it was a simple change that should not have taken nine months to accomplish.
“You take it as a slap in the face, he says. “You take it as, yes, we had a marriage equality as of January but the state is still looking down at us as secondclass citizens and saying, ‘Uh, we’ll get around to changing the forms online when we get around to it. We’ll get around to it.’ That’s just unacceptable.
The 1989 Loma Prieto earthquake damaged many homes that had garages on the first floor. Credit: edStock/iStockphoto.com
The L.A. City Council may place limits on the cost amount landlords can pass on in the form of rent increases. Without those limits, Gross estimates 166,000 families could see their rent go up by $75 month. “This poses an incredible threat to tenants who can’t afford the existing rent, because under the current law, the entire cost of that can be passed on to tenants, he says. San Francisco passed a similar measure in 2013, which allowed landlords to pass on 100 percent of the costs but let low-income tenants apply for a hardship waiver. Many smaller cities across California face the same quake risk, but don’t have rent-control ordinances. In those cities, landlords simply are permitted to pass on all costs to renters.
Marriage certificates are required to apply for a range of spousal protections and benefits. They can be ordered online with the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Marriage licenses come from one of 67 county clerks.

US got rakes in record tax revenue, but still overspends
The federal government has collected $2.8 trillion in taxes over the 11 months of the fiscal year 2015, almost $200 billion than the year before. This means $19,346 for every working
American. Yet Washington has overspent by $530 billion. Most of the money – $1.379 trillion – came into the Treasury from individual income taxes. Payroll taxes for Social Security,
Medicare and other entitlements accounted for $977.5 billion, while corporate taxes accounted for $268.4 billion, according to the monthly statement released Monday by the Department of

Following his governmental work, he served as the Diversity Officer and Senior Vice President for Employment at Union Bank in San Francisco, where he achieved the recognition for the bank by Fortune magazine as the best company in the US for diversity in 2000, and by the Federal Government with the Opportunity 2000 award as the best company in America for affirmative action. Upon retiring in 2008 he moved to Palm Springs and joined the Board of the Golden Rainbow Senior Center. In his seven years at The Center, Randy has shepherded the organization through a
Treasury. The US fiscal year begins and ends in October. Given that the Bureau of Labor Statistics logged 149 million Americans with either part-time or full-time jobs in August, the total taxation would work out to $19,346 for every US worker. In 2015 dollars, the US government took in $198.4 billion more than in the first 11 months of the fiscal year 2014. This time last year, the government’s revenue was at $2.684 trillion. However, in 2015 the government has spent $3.413 trillion so far, racking up a $529.9 billion deficit. Most of the government spending goes to Social Security ($812 billion) and Medicare ($501 billion). Another $235
billion is dedicated to paying the interest on government debt. The second-biggest outlay is military spending, with the Pentagon receiving $536 billion. In 2012, the Obama administration raised the top income tax rate from 35 percent to 39.6 percent, increased the top tax rate on dividends and capital gains to 20 percent, and eliminated many exemptions and deductions for those who earned $250,000 or more in annual income. Another 3.8 percent tax on dividends, interest, capital gains and royalties went into effect in 2013, embedded in the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.

I’m not used to being in this heavier body. I know that the weight loss balloon is going to give me that little boost to help me get to where I need to be. I really want my mojo back.” September 16, 2015

Kentucky clerk returns to work after 5-day jail stint
By Claire Galofaro MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) - Kim Davis returned to work Monday for the first time since she was jailed for denying marriage licenses to gay couples and said she had been faced with a “seemingly impossible choice” between following her conscience and losing her freedom. With her voice shaking, the Kentucky county clerk said she would not interfere with deputy clerks who continue to hand out the licenses, but Davis declared that the documents would not be authorized by her, and she questioned their validity. Davis, an Apostolic Christian who spent five days in jail for disobeying a federal judge, read from a hand-written statement outside the Rowan County courthouse, saying she was torn between obeying God and the judge’s directive, which she said “forces me to disobey God.” The first couple to apply for a license Monday was Shannon Wampler and Carmen Collins. They stood at the counter for a half-hour, dozens of reporters gathering behind them and microphones bobbing above their heads. Deputy clerk Brian Mason sitting behind a sign that reads “marriage license deputy” - gave them a license despite his boss’s objections and after a delay because of a printer problem. Protesters in the back heckled Mason, but he ignored them, initialed the license and shook the couple’s hands. As Davis indicated in her statement, the couple’s license had the words “pursuant to federal court order” typed on it. One protester waved a Bible. Elizabeth Johnson from Ohio screamed, “Don’t let Kim’s five days in jail be in vain.” Marriage-equality supporters chanted, “Love has won.” Davis, a Democrat, sat in her office with the door closed and the blinds drawn. She became a hero to many conservative Christians when she stopped issuing the licenses after the Supreme Court

FILE - In this Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, file photo, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, with Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee at her side, greets the crowd after being released from the Carter County Detention Center legalized same-sex marriage. Her profile rose when she was jailed, as protesters, presidential candidates and news crews from across the county descended on the small town of Morehead. The governor, the attorney general and the county attorney have said the licenses are valid. “I don’t want to have this conflict. I don’t want to be in the spotlight. And I certainly don’t want to be a whipping post,” Davis said. “I am no hero. I’m just a person that’s been transformed by the grace of God, who wants to work, be with my family. I just want to serve my neighbors quietly without violating my conscience.” Mason, a 38-year-old former retail worker who has unwittingly fallen into the middle of the issue, also has supporters. A man delivered a gift bag to him today with bourbon balls and a candle. A Facebook support group was created for him. As he prepared to issue the license, Mason casually chewed gum and scrolled on his computer with dozens of cameras in his face, including
people standing on ladders to get a better shot of him. Hecklers shouted “coward” at him from the side of room. He smiled at them and turned back to his work. Mason said he spoke with Davis only briefly Monday. He’s worked for her for a year and a half, he said. “It’s a little crazy,” he said of the cameras trained on him. “But I try not to let it bother me.” He declined to comment on his personal opinion of gay marriage or Davis’ defiance. A lawyer for Davis said the license issued Monday did not violate Davis’s conscience. “If it’s satisfactory to the ... court, then I think we will have found that win-win solution that we have been asking for all along,” attorney Harry Mihet told a news conference. The issue has drawn some of the most fervent Christian activists from across the country. Their trucks were parked up and down the street, bearing signs that read “sodomy ruins nations” and “repent.” One truck, with a North
Carolina license plate, had a poster-sized photo of an aborted fetus on the side. Others, from Iowa and Colorado, featured photos of two men kissing with doomsday warnings about the sin of homosexuality. Elsewhere stood whitetopped tents and loudspeakers blaring Christian music. People were shouting Bible verses from the sidewalk. A plane flew overhead trailing a rainbow banner. U.S. District Judge David Bunning held Davis in contempt and ordered her to jail Sept. 3 after she refused to issue the licenses. In her absence, her deputies issued at least seven licenses to gay couples and altered the forms to exclude Davis’ name. In her statement, Davis said: “I love my deputy clerks, and I hate that they have been caught in the middle of any of this. If any of them feel that they must issue an authorized license to avoid being thrown in jail, I understand their tough choice, and I will take no action against them.” Source: KMIR/AP

By KMIR News Staff OAKTON, Va. (AP) Longtime rocker Kenny Loggins brought his band to perform for a few dozen people in a living room after a Virginia man’s Kickstarter campaign raised more than $30,000 for the show. Erick Sanchez started the online campaign to raise money to have Loggins and his band, the Blue Sky Riders, perform at his parents’ home in Oakton. The 29-year-old public relations consultant and self-described “super-fan” got his wish Sunday. The band played all their hits, including “Danger Zone.” “Everyone had a really great time, I mean, the energy in my living room was fantastic,” September 16, 2015
Sanchez said after the show, which he described as “surreal.” More than 230 people donated to the effort, which raised more than $30,000. About 50 of them were able to watch the concert live from the Sanchez’s living room. Working on the show was like working on a wedding, Sanchez said, considering all of the time and effort that went into making it happen. Loggins, who still tours and performs at theaters and university campuses, said, “This is the first time we’ve done anything like this - it felt really great.”

HOROSCOPES ARIES
Close relationships could enter into difficult communication and misunderstandings so be aware of Mercury’s retrograde because it’s affecting interactions with close and intimate friends and lovers. Make no important plans or decisions the next three weeks. Instead attempt to clear up unresolved tensions or confusions. Expect misinterpretation. Use language clearly, intelligently and lovingly. “Make love not war.”
TAURUS As your preparations for the future continue unwaveringly, be aware that more interruptions than usual will occur. Daily plans and agendas, though mapped out, may set off in unusual directions. Do not criticize self or others should the needed work be set aside for more important issues. Mercury is a messenger and during this retrograde time, new information presented to you constitutes your new assignments.
GEMINI Spend solitary time to reflect upon the times we are in. Discuss with those close to you what they think is occurring and if they feel preparations for the future are necessary. Mercury retro provides us (especially you)
SEPTEMBER 16 – 23, 2015 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
with detailed interior information related to present concerns and situations. Like Mercury, who gathers significant information for distribution, you are the messenger. Listen carefully, quietly, interiorly.
CANCER Communication is demanding and strenuous during this Mercury retrograde. All energies within your environments are felt more deeply. You will think and ponder upon what you already know. You will not be settled or relaxed. Everyone will demand of you extra care and nurturing. With loved ones, discuss new possibilities, offer vital information, make no plans. All things turn upside down, inside out.
LEO Everything will move faster than the speed of light. Should you be traveling, you will not move with the speed of light but with slow, precise and careful movements toward your destination, which actually could be your destiny. Equipment, tools, computers, phones, technology, people will act as if forgot how to function efficiently. As well as you can, tend to what’s broken. And tend to your money, resources and values, too.
VIRGO Mercury, as it retrogrades, helps you realize your true values, including spiritual values. It asks you to consider what the right use of matter (resources) is. These are very complex questions. Mercury, when retrograde, creates within Virgo a very deep state of assessment. By now you should have a Mercury retrograde journal to record feelings, thoughts and revelations during the retrogrades. Always over time, retrogrades offer guidance and direction.
LIBRA Notice if during the next three weeks your perceptions begin to change, if your point of view, ways of thinking, and position on many things often hidden from others adjusts, transforms and amends. This is a very internal time when thoughts focus on self-identity. Who have you become in the past several years? Have you continued with a posture, thought or belief that is no longer comfortable? Right Relations in Libra’s keynote.
SCORPIO During the next three weeks you might consider several questions. What are your deep inner resources? Faith, religion, virtue, focus and concentration? How do you offer service to
humanity? Are you dreaming more? Do you have dreams for your future? You can often be alone, not sharing your inner self with others. You will internalize even deeper, contacting hidden reserves. You’re quiet. We’ll be interested in what you learned during Mercury’s retrograde.
SAGITTARIUS Reflect upon what you hoped for in the future in the light of the present world news. You may need to change plans, objectives and goals. What are your spiritual visions and aspirations? Do they blend with future goals? Sagittarians are being called to join men and women of Goodwill – New Group of World Servers - because daring visionaries, adventurers, and new-idea thinkers and philosophers are needed.
CAPRICORN In the next three weeks, following Mercury retro directives, you will reassess, re-evaluate, re-examine, reconsider, and perhaps revise your idea of a professional life. You will consider the satisfaction your present life provides, the compensations, rewards, drawbacks and advantages. You will see that every day you apply your talents and gifts, rendering service to the humanity you are responsible for. Follow not your rational mind but
your heart’s desires. Be grateful.
AQUARIUS It’s practical to be rational using the reasoning mind. But there is another level available beyond instinct – the intuitive mind. Information becomes knowledge uses reason, which then becomes intuition. As you sense and comprehend the rhythm of the present times, you realize your work is to impart a vision of truth and community to everyone. This is your loving service to humanity. The devas (angels) work with you. Ask them for what you need.
PISCES You are about to embark upon a journey to the past where you will meet once again crisis sadness, criticisms and losses previously endured. This will be a test so you can demonstrate a one-pointed purpose amidst an internal crisis. You cannot do this alone. You must call upon the Soul, Divine Intelligence and Divine Mother for assistance. You seek direction. First, pass the tests. Pray, invoke guidance, study & meditate. Ask and give forgiveness. This is the season. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.

The victim has been identified as history professor Ethan Schmidt, apparently shot and killed inside his office at Jobe Hall. There were several reports of a hostage situation, citing Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) and second-hand accounts from inside DSU. However, there has been no official confirmation. Jobe Hall, where the shooting occurred, is the History and Theatre building on the east side of Delta State campus. Police in Gautier, a town
in southern Mississippi, have named another DSU employee a “person of interest” in a murder investigation. Shannon Lamb, 45, is being sought in connection to the death of a woman, found in a Gautier home on Monday. DSU lists a Shannon Lamb as an instructor in the Social Sciences department. It is unclear whether this case is related to the shooting on the DSU campus in Cleveland, however. Cleveland is a city in northwestern Mississippi with around 13,000 residents. Delta State is a public university established in 1924, with an enrollment of around 4,000 students. It is known for its flight school, and is the only school in the state offering a degree in Commercial Aviation. The Starksville campus of Mississippi State University was locked down on August 27, amid reports of an active shooter. The authorities detained one student. It later emerged that no actual shots had been fired, and the alert was issued after a threat of violence was made online. September 16, 2015

We arrived after viewing the long-awaited dramatic exhibit, Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe at the Palm Springs Art Museum. The exhibit opened Sept. 5 closing on December 15. Brace yourself for 110 pairs of outrageous, unpredictable “high heel”shoes that pull out all the stops-and straps! These one of kind shoes showcase functions, fantasy and fashion, the exhibit takes time at least an hour to explore. From stunning, jewel encrusted high heels worn by Marilyn Monroe to shoes that make short women up to six Inches taller... “High heels still have to hold you up comfortably while adding a few inches your height!” It reminded Grace
Robbins, who is five feet tall. The killer heels fashioned into stilettos, platforms and wedges fascinated Laurie Weitz, a Palm Springs resident. Being barely over five feet tall she is familiar in the art of the heel. “ It’s refreshing to see a world-class fashion exhibit in Palm Springs, carefully curated with heels spanning history from tiny nineteenthcentury Chinese slippers to killer heels designed by Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin, United Nude and Celine. A few steps away were elegant delicately brocaded eighteenth-century court shoes, looking far more comfortable than Killer Heels. There are docent tours scheduled. If you are on your own take time to view six original short films and one thought-provoking video exploring the political social and cultural impact of “killer heels” which doesn’t leave much to one’s imagination. Personally, I’d also like to get a podiatrist’s spin on the impact of Killer Heels on women’s feet. On a higher note, consider
By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission is being asked to rethink its decision to allow more cougars to be killed during hunting season. The recommended quota, based on in-state university research, has been 12 to 16 percent of the cougar population – but the commission increased the number to 17 to 21 percent in some hunting management units. The Humane Society of the United States says there’s no scientific justification for it. Dan Paul, the society’s Washington director, says cougars often inhabit wolf country – and since wolves are off-limits to hunters in the state, he suspect’s cougars are paying the price. “This is not about cougar management at all, and this is not about public safety,” he says. “We already have the ability to take care of ‘problem cats.’ This
appears to be targeting cats as a way to appease folks that want to shoot wolves, but can’t.” The Fish and Wildlife Commission proposed a higher quota for the next three years, then dropped it to one year. The Humane Society and other groups have petitioned for a return to the original quota. The commission has 60 days to respond. Estimates put Washington’s cougar population at over 3,000 animals, with more than 200 a year killed by hunters. Paul describes the state’s cougar population as stable and healthy. One concern with a higher quota is it could change the dynamics of that otherwise healthy population. He says the “trophy animals” sought by hunters are adult male cougars – and when there are fewer of them, younger males become more dominant. That, he says, is trouble. “The young cougars will

England’s Sir Ben Kingsley is one of the world’s most respected actors. His film career, which spans over 40 years, began with his breakout performance in Gandhi. He won the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi, which catapulted him into instant international fame. He also won a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and London Film Critics’ Circle Award for his riveting performance. Subsequently, he has acted in three other films, which were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar – Bugsy, Hugo, and Schindler’s List, with Gandhi and Schindler’s List winning in that coveted category, as well as six other categories. Kingsley’s performance as Itzhak Stern in Schindler’s List garnered him a BAFTA nomination. He also won a Screen Actors Guild Award
for his role of Otto Frank in the television movie Anne Frank: The Whole Story, as well as a nod for his role of Sweeney Todd in another television movie – The Tales of Sweeney Todd. Every role Kingsley has portrayed is a masterpiece of acting and includes Oscarnominated roles in Sexy Beast, and House of Sand and Fog. Some of his other films include: Sneakers, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Death and the Maiden, The Confession, Rules of Engagement, Oliver Twist, Elegy, Shutter Island, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Iron Man 3, and Exodus: Gods and Kings. Kingsley was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. His father, Rahimtulla Harji Bhanji, is of Gujarati Indian descent, and his mother, Anna Lyna Mary, was English. His birth name was Krishna Pandit Bhanji, but as he
became a successful stage actor, fearing that his real name could be an obstacle to his career, he changed his name to Ben Kingsley. In his latest film, Learning to Drive, Kingsley gives yet another multi-textured portrayal as Darwan, a highly educated Indian gentleman who works as a taxi driver and driving instructor in New York City. Written by Sarah Kernochan and directed by Isabel Coixet, the film co-stars Patricia Clarkson as Wendy, a woman in transition following her divorce. She hires Darwan to teach her how to drive, but the lessons they learn from each other transcend just driving lessons. The supporting cast includes: Jake Weber, Sarita Choudhury, and Grace Gummer. Kingsley currently resides in Spelsbury, Oxfordshire, England with his fourth wife, 34-year-old Daniela (Danny) Barbosa de Carneiro. At a recent press day, Kingsley sat down with a group of select journalists and discussed his career, and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.

I have a really important question to ask you. Your father is Indian and your mother is English. How do you take your tea? Kingsley: Oh, so we’ve segued into tea. (Laughter) My mother was part English, part Russian Jewish. My father was Ismaili and was actually born in Zanzibar, in East Africa, where there is a very large Ismaili community. But, to answer your question, I like my tea strong with milk. Can you explain your relationship with the Sikh community? K i n g s l e y : F ro m m y perspective, and I speak with some accuracy, if you know one Sikh man, you know all of them because there is a tremendous consistency in their behavior, their approach to life, their courtesy, and kindness to others. So in the script, I believe when Darwan says, “This is the Sikh way,” it is. It is not sentimental. It is not something he’s made up. It is actually the way they do things. From my perspective as a portrait artist, because I had to create a portrait to present to the screen, I see a warrior race of men and women. Did you base your character of Darwan on anyone in particular? Just think of the number of people I’ve met in my career. I do have an extraordinary memory and even though they may drift into the periphery of my memory, I can bring them back when I need them. When I was filming Gandhi, every day I was greeted by my Sikh bodyguard driver. I drove to the set looking at the back of his head – his turban, how he gently moved from side to side whenever I asked him a question – how he would have ferociously defended me had anything happened. I think one of the indelible images I have of him was him looking at me in his rear- view mirror.
Do you have one particularly memorable moment during that shoot? He was driving me away from the largest crowed you’ve ever seen on screen in the cinema. It was a traumatic day for me because I was on the funeral wagon, hardly breathing for nine hours. When I got to the end of the road, I had to ask my first AD (assistant director) dressed in a British uniform, because all the ADs were extras in the film. I said, “Steve, how many people are here?” “40,000 sir.” “How am I going to stand up in front of 40,000 people? I’ve been dead for nine nights.” He lifted me up and I saw all those people who were very quiet because I had just broken the spell. I had come back to life. Fortunately, I was not wearing jeans under my Indian costume. He helped me stand and I turned to the crowd. One person started to applaud and then they all started to sing. The women, who had a blue stripe on the edge of their Saris, lifted me off the back of the wagon and carried me to a waiting car. The driver started his car and we had to move through 40,000 people to get back onto the main road to go home. The driver looked in the mirror and said, “Well done sir.” That’s what he said. “Well done sir.” I treasure that moment and that’s whom I’m playing in Learning to Drive. He’d be very proud if he knew I used him. What traits did you love about Darwan? Kingsley: His stillness, his kindness, his strength, his economy of words and his decency, expressed in a very unsentimental, practical way. I would say that they are very unsentimental people, but very emotionally developed. I loved that about him and it’s a great leap to play. After his brother has been shot, and his family tortured, he comes over to Continues on Page 14 www.desertstarweekly.com
DANCE Thor Steingraber Opens VPACs 5th Season with ‘Diavolo BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Thor Steingraber, the new executive director of the Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC) located within the campus of Cal State Northridge (CSUN), will open the Center’s fifth full season with the amazing dance troupe Diavolo- Architecture in Motion. “It was important to launch my first year of programming with something that was a North American premiere,” he said...” This is why we are opening with ‘L’Espace du Temps.’ It will be Jacques Heim’s first full-length evening with an orchestra in his 23-year history as Diavolo’s artistic director. The theme of the ballet is a meditation on the space of time from creation to evolution. Where do we come from? Where are we going? And how did it all begin? The ballet, in three parts, opens with ‘Foreign Bodies,’ music by Esa-Pekka Salonen, followed by ‘Fearful Symmetries,’ music by John Adams and ‘Fluid Infinities with music composed by Philip Glass.” What sets this company apart from all others is their use of architectural forms throughout. According to Steingraber “a big dome and two cube-like
structures will be used in this ballet... These cool object’s morph into different objects and shapes as they turn, open, come apart and go back together again.”. Besides their trademark use of architectural forms, Diavolo also combines every day movement with gymnastics, ballet, martial arts and even a bit of hip hop. In the words of their artistic director Jacques Heim, the ballet is “great, monumental, fantastic, outrageous, intense musically and structurally” as the dancers interact with moving shapes and forms to entertain and visually delight their audience. When asked just what a program director does Thor genially replied, “You name it, he does it, from operation to programming.” Besides his great enthusiasm for all aspects of live theater, from music and dance to comedy, he has twenty years of hands-on experience as a producer whom he will use to craft original shows throughout the upcoming season. And he plans to “ think outside the box!” He plans to feature performers from past years at

that often rambles from love and romance to possible espionage to island lore and mythical characters who seem to come to life for Emma Stone’s character. And while there are too many plots and subplots in other instances things are just too predictable. Unfortunately, many of the characters are not fully fleshed out. A prime example is Bill Murray’s rich guy who is ready to launch a satellite into the pristine skies over Hawaii. Are his intentions good or bad and why is the military helping him in the first place? It begins as Bradley Cooper’s character, now a celebrated military contractor, returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs, Honolulu Hawaii. At the airport he reconnects with a love from long ago (Rachel McAdams). It has been 13 years since they last were in touch. Will they reconnect or will he fall for Emma Stone, the perky, poorly written Air Force watchdog who has been assigned to him, for some reason. Crowe’s script is well
meaning as he attempts to capture the innocence and purity of the native Hawaiians who resent the invasion of nonHawaiians. A chief appears at the beginning of the film, but soon after we never encounter another native Hawaiian other than Emma Stone, a Swedish-looking blonde who is one fourth Hawaiian. Now throw in Bill Murray, a superrich contractor who may be up to no good. Unfortunately, his character is so poorly sketched out you never truly know who he really is or what he is up to until the very end. The chemistry between Stone and Cooper is not that convincing either. In fact, you kind of root for McAdams who is more endearing than either Cooper or Stone. But the biggest problem is Crowe’s script. The DVD features a gag reel and an alternate ending, which is worse than the ending used in the movie. “Aloha” should have been a winner but unfortunately the convoluted, unfocused story just “leis” there. Sony Pictures rated PG-13.

VPAC as well as brand new acts that will range from “an evening with David Sedaris, one of the most revered raconteurs that have written dozens of books to Los Tigres del Norte, a Mexican American group. We will feature the best from the past along with fresh concepts. Joshua Bell is one of the best from our past, for example. We want to do what works and also gaze into the future in order to create and establish our own unique identity in a very crowded L.A. market.” On December 12, there will be a spectacular show to honor Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday and in 2016 Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson) will narrate “Peter and the Wolf” which will be performed with a full orchestra. Parents will enjoy this one as much as their kids will. The Valley Performing Arts Center has a great new season ahead, and the price is also right. Show prices for many events will be in the $30-$40 range and $70-$90 for perfect seats in front. There is plenty of parking in structures on both sides of the campus for just $6. In closing Thor said, with a smile in his voice, “Northridge is not really that far away. We are a fantastic destination. Just hop on the freeway, and you can be here in a jiffy, particularly if you live in any of the adjacent valley areas.” “Diavolo- Architecture in Motion” will be performed Saturday Sept. 19th at 8 p.m. and Sunday Sept 20 at 3 p.m.For tickets and further information visit ValleyPerformingArtsCenter. org or call (818) 677-3000. Say good-bye to “Aloha” “Aloha,” a film written and directed by Cameron Crowe (“Jerry Maguire” and “Almost Famous”) is now available on DVD. Set in the beautiful state of Hawaii, “Aloha” boasts a topnotch cast that includes Bradley Cooper (“American Sniper”), Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, John Krasinski and Alec Baldwin. So what could possibly go wrong? Plenty. Perhaps the biggest drawback is Crowe’s script September 16, 2015

MUSIC Groundbreaking artists captured on new titles BY ROBERT KINSLER
If variety is indeed the spice of life, look no further than a slew of September releases featuring the far-flung likes of Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Los Angeles-spawned rockers Los Lobos, British quartet Duran Duran and a special reissue of the first “Mystery Science Theater 3000” box set featuring an infamous B move with an appearance by Little Richard and several other early rock acts.
Artist: Jeff Lynne’s ELO Title: Live in Hyde Park (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), The Beatles, Pugwash Tell me more: There is little doubt that Jeff Lynne and Electric Light Orchestra (better known as “ELO”) are back. In September 2014, singer-songwriter-guitarist Lynne and ELO performed before 50,000 fans at Hyde Park in London as part of BBC Radio 2’s “Festival In A Day.” The wonderful event has been fully captured on a new concert film that finds Lynne and company delivering epic versions of more
than a dozen ELO classics. The uptempo “All Over The World,” ‘70s-styled rocker “Ma-Ma-Ma Belle,” masterful BBC Concert Orchestra showcase “10538 Overture” and sweeping “Mr. Blue Sky” are among the great songs performed. Lynne also pays tribute to his late friends Roy Orbison and George Harrison with a poignant take of the Traveling Wilburys’ “Handle With Care.” “Live in Hyde Park” is available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital formats. Information: eagle-rock.com. Artist: Los Lobos Title: Gates Of Gold (429 Records) You might like if you enjoy: Los Lobos, the Latin Playboys, Los Super Seven Tell me more: Whether performing rootsy rock, folk, blues or Tex-Mex rock, legendary outfit Los Lobos displays a creative wide-ranging spirit across the aptly-titled album “Gates Of Gold.” Things lead off with the infectious roots rocker “Made To Break Your Heart,” but the band turns things around with a wistful track (“When
We Were Free”) that blends rock and free-form jazz. No matter whether playing blistering blues rock (“Mis-Treater Boogie Blues,” “Two Small Heart”), traditional Mexican music (“Poquito Para Aqui,” “La Tumba Sera El Final”), Americana (“Gates Of Gold,” “Song Of The Sun”) or acoustic blues (“I Believed You So”), longtime members/songwriters David Hidalgo, Louie Perez and Cesar Rosas have an otherworldly ability to ensure all the sonic elements fit together perfectly. Information: 429records.com. Artist: Duran Duran Title: Paper Gods (Warner Bros.) You might like if you enjoy: Duran Duran, Arcadia, Mark Ronson Tell me more: More than 35 years into their run, British band Duran Duran remains relevant, mixing the best of their early ‘80s New Wave synth sounds with modern-day dance stylings via contributions from several guest vocalists and musicians (including former Red Hot Chili Peppers
guitarist John Frusciante) on their latest album “Paper Gods.” The heavy dance gem “Last Dance In The City” features Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon sharing vocals with Canadian singer Kiesza; equally propulsive is the disc’s first single “Pressure Off” featuring Duran Duran teaming with soul-funk singer Janelle Monáe and former Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers. Duran Duran turns in one of its greatest-ever ballads with the tender “What Are The Chances?” (Le Bon’s voice sounds better than ever), while the blend of electronica and pop on “Only In Dreams” and “The Universe Alone” are enhanced by several experimental flourishes. Information: duranduran.com. Title: Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume 1 (Shout! Factory) You might like if you enjoy: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Little Richard, Mary Wells Tell me more: Shout! Factory has reissued an expanded version of its long-out-of-print “Mystery
Science Theater 3000: Volume 1” collection. The groundbreaking movie-mocking TV series never got it wrong in terms of selecting choice B movies to skew, while interspersing the film with skits and songs that featured original and intelligent comedy in spades. “Volume 1” kicks off with an episode featured in Season 2 of MST3K, the 1967 beach party film “Catalina Caper” noteworthy for its appearance by rocker Little Richard singing “Scuba Party,” a song he co-wrote with film composer Jerry Long. Often forgotten too was a performance by The Cascades singing the Ray Davies-penned “There’s a New World” on screen and Mary Wells singing the song “Never Steal Anything Wet” over the closing credits. Other choice Crown International Pictures essential clunkers featured on “Volume 1” include “Bloodlust,” “The Creeping Terror” and “The Skydivers.” Information: shoutfactory.com.

Tram Road Warm-up Walk Draws a Crowd
By Angela Monroe PALM SPRINGS -- We’re drawing closer to the annual Tram Road Challenge, and this week’s walk was a foreshadowing of the event to come at Tramway Road in Palm Springs. Dozens of people, including many of us from KMIR, started the morning with a morning stretch at the base of Tramway Road. Afterward, it was a steep incline up for the 6k warm-up walk. KMIR is a proud sponsor of the 30th annual Tram Road Challenge that is held on United Way’s Make a Difference Day October 24th. All nine of the valley’s cities are hosting walks every Saturday
morning, and each walk benefits a charity. We hope to see you at the fifth walk, bright and early next Saturday, September 19th at 7am. That’s at Rancho Las Flores Park in Coachella at Avenue 48 and Van Buren Street. As always the walks are free, but you are encouraged to bring books and school supplies for teens to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Coachella Valley. We want to hear your stories about why you are walking or training for the Tram Road Challenge. Share it online on our Facebook or Twitter with #WhyIWalkUnited.

Shadow Hills Stunned by 60-Yard Game-Winner By Dan Marinelli Shadow Hills – Hitting a 59yard field goal is rare. At Shadow Hills High School last Friday, the home-team Knights not only witnessed the NFL-range boot, but wound up with a 24-21 loss on the shocking game-winner for Brawley High School. The game stayed defensive till the start of the second quarter. Tony Williams got the Knights started first with a 19yard run that put the De Anza League team up seven. Brawley Answered with a touchdown of their own from running back Nathan Suit. “Offensive line did a really good job this week,” Williams said in a post-game interview. “It didn’t look like it, but (in the first two games) the offense wasn’t getting anything going.” Like Williams mentioned, the offensive line was strong in this
game, helping the senior finish with 140 yards on the ground. Rushing quarterback J.D. Lang ran in the Knights’ second touchdown of the game in the second quarter putting Shadow Hills back up 14-7 at the end of the first half. Brawley managed to even the game out at 14 in the third quarter and held the Knights scoreless the entire third quarter. In the beginning of the final quarter, Williams ran in a threeyard touchdown to put the home team back up seven but there was still 11 minutes left to play. On the following Brawley possession, the Wildcats went on a seven-minute, 70-yard drive, ending with another Suit touchdown that tied the game at 21. Despite the tie, with just four minutes left and the ball, the Knights were in a decent position. Going against the wind –
which would turn out to be a big factor later in the game – Shadow Hills was driving the ball. With just seconds remaining, Lang threw a pass on fourth down that was under thrown, intercepted and run back to the Knights’ 43 with seven seconds to play. Brawley took one attempt at the endzone before bringing out David Quintero to try and win with the improbable kick. Quintero – a senior who is playing his first year of football ever – knocked the ball through the uprights and stunned the home crowd “I knew with this wind behind him, I knew he had a big leg,” Knights head coach Ron Shipley said after the game. With the loss, the Knights are now 0-3 and though no league games have started, find themselves in last place in the De Anza. There were some bright spots, this was the best Shadow hills has played in its first
three games, allowing the fewest points all season. “We’ve definitely got some improvement to do,” Shipley said after the game. “We’ve got some things to clean up. I thought our kids played with a lot off heart today. The kids played well. It
was just too many mistakes.” The Knights play the Desert Valley League’s Cathedral City Lions this Friday at Cat City before the De Anza season starts in two weeks. This Friday’s game starts at 7 pm.
How did that casting come about? Kingsley: I asked our director, Isabel, and she said, “Marta? She’s perfect for Marta.” So, Danny and I went for lunch with Sikhs. Was there one memorable moment during the shoot? Kingsley: It was one sustained, unbroken moment thanks to our beautiful director. On many film sets, moments are invaded and broken. Your character’s profession in India was that of a professor which was not valid in the U.S. How do you think he felt being relegated to a taxi driver and part-time driving instructor? Kingsley: I’d like to think that he was a really good professor because in his DNA is that will to teach and it’s unstoppable in him. So, that is beautifully translated into a driving instructor and you see from the opening of the film, that he is instructing at a much higher level than just driving. What do you think of the scene where he wants his new wife to read him a poem as he lies in her lap? Kingsley: There you have a highly educated man, probably a professor of English literature, loving those poems, and realizing that the poor girl can’t read. But, she does make an effort. She goes to class and he’s very proud of her. He tells her she’s got to go out into the world. You know the friend she meets in the grocery store? That’s my wife. What is the best advice you’ve received from a director? I remember when I was working with the great Peter Brook on Midsummer Night’s Dream that I had a long conversation with him. He was a great mentor and said that the actor should always find the quality in the person he’s representing that is greater than the quality in you, so you always have something to stretch to.

testing found Celsius stopped up to 31 feet shorter on snow and eight feet shorter on ice than a typical all-season tire.* The tire features the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake like a winter tire which means it meets or exceeds industry-established snow traction performance requirements. Variable tread technology results in an asymmetric tire which has a visibly different tread from inside-to-outside. Snow claws are located at the base of the outer circumferential grooves to help improve deep snow traction while providing block rigidity for better
ice and wet traction. Deep slush grooves help evacuate heavy slush and snow from the tire for increased traction. The Celsius family of tires includes Celsius® for passenger cars and Celsius® CUV for crossovers. In addition to a 60,000-mile treadwear warranty, Celsius qualifies for the Toyo Tires No Regrets Trial Offer* which ensures drivers are completely satisfied with their purchase. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection •••••••••••••• spokesman Daniel Berlant says 7:30 a.m.: The number of containment is at 5 percent.
The fire has destroyed 400 homes and many other structures including barns and outbuildings, and there’s a report of a fatality. By Desert Star Staff CYPRESS, Calif., -- Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. has brought year-round versatility and winter-weather safety together in one with Toyo® Celsius®, the revolutionary new variableconditions tire. Toyo Tires® created the new segment called “Variable-Conditions” in order to define the unique capabilities of this product. Built for the varying road conditions that drivers may face, Celsius picks up where all-season tires fall short. It provides better ice and snow traction than a typical all-season tire, yet offers
the convenience of year-round use and a 60,000-mile treadwear warranty*. For vehicle owners, this means year-round versatility plus winter-weather safety… all in one tire. The new Celsius is for the many drivers, who for one reason or another, choose not to switch to winter tires when snow and ice hit the ground. It is ideal for people who live in states where they may drive to work in dry conditions, only to have a fast-moving winter storm leave snow on the roads for the commute home. It is also great for people who may live in an area
below a mountain resort where they commute often for work or play. Parents will find Celsius convenient when equipping the car of a college-bound teen with new tires. “Toyo Celsius is an upgrade for anyone expecting, or not expecting, to drive in ice and snow this winter on all-season tires,” said Roy Bromfield, COO, Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. “The convenience and safety of Celsius is a tremendous benefit in today’s busy world and answers the demand for hassle-free, onestop solutions.” Independent third-party
By KMIR News MIDDLETOWN, Calif. (AP) - The latest on wildfires raging in drought-stricken California (all times local): 12:30 p.m.: Shirley Leuzinger lived in her home in Middletown for 15 years before it was destroyed by fire. So was the one across the street, where she and her husband previously lived for 10 years and raised their children. Leuzinger said Monday she had seen TV images of her home burning and some neighbors had taken photos of the destruction, but it wasn’t until she saw it with her own eyes that the grief set in. She says she’s thankful her family and three dogs are safe. She’s also thankful she was able to grab a few pictures and some important papers. But standing in the middle of the ash and rubble, she remembered all the other possessions she wished she had taken with her. She says she’s doing her best to hold it together. 11:30 a.m.: California officials say a massive wildfire t h a t ’s d e v a s t a t e d r u r a l communities north of California’s Napa Valley has also damaged infrastructure. At a news conference Monday, officials say the explosive blaze has damaged water distribution facilities and a massive complex of geothermal
power plants known as the Geysers. California Gov. Jerry Brown thanked firefighters for their courage as they “battle with nature” to stop that fire and another that have destroyed hundreds of homes and forced tens of thousands to evacuate. At the press conference, the governor said the fires are “scary stuff” exacerbated by climate change and a four-year drought. Fire Chief Ken Pimlott says there have been 1,500 more fires than usual for this point in the year. There is one confirmed death and others are missing, though officials don’t yet know whether those unaccounted for are elsewhere.
People have packed evacuation centers as the fires have destroyed hundreds of homes and led to one confirmed death. Ghilarducci says more residents are missing.

The Latest: Residents return to fire-ravaged homes
••••••••••••••
10:27 a.m.: State officials say 23,000 people have been displaced by two explosive wildfires decimating whole communities in Northern California. Mark Ghilarducci, director of Office of Emergency Services, said at a news conference Monday that about 13,000 have been driven from their homes by a wildfire 20 miles north of the famed Napa Valley. He says about 10,000 people have been displaced from a second blaze less than 200 miles away in the Sierra Nevada.
••••••••••••••
9:48 a.m.: Several hundred people chased from their homes by an explosive wildfire in Northern California spent the night at the Napa County Fairgrounds and awoke to a breakfast of eggs, bacon and doughnuts. Donations of food, clothing and shoes, diapers and dog food have flooded in. Evacuees milled around Monday morning eating, picking up clothing and walking their dogs. Nancy O’ Byrne was evacuated from her home in Middletown, about 20 miles north of the famed Napa Valley, but it’s still standing. She says she feels “very, very, very lucky.” Michael Alan Patrick had been at the fairgrounds since Saturday and lost everything in the blaze. When the fire broke out, he had been sitting in a Middletown park with his friends and saw the flames coming. He said it was like looking through a tunnel.
California drought is worst in 500 years By Desert Star Staff After four years of drought California is now at its driest for 500 years, scientists have found. The heat has left the Golden State with almost no snowpack in the mountains, which is critical for replenishing the state’s water reservoirs. An analysis of blue oak tree rings in the state’s Central Valley has led scientists to “astonishing” results. Scientists have compared their measurements of tree-ring data to previous Sierra Nevada snowpack level recordings that have been recorded since the 1930’s and found that oak trees’ growth seem to accurately reflect the lowest snowpack seasons. “We combined an extensive compilation of blue oak tree-ring series that reflects large-scale California winter precipitation anomalies with a California FebruaryMarch temperature reconstruction in a reconstruction that explains 63 percent of the Sierra Nevada snow water equivalent variance over the
instrumental period,” the scientists wrote. The answer lies in the rings of Blue oaks that show high winter rain levels with wide bands in the rings, while low levels result in narrow bands. It became clear after analysis of the new core samples and those taken in previous years that 2015 had the lowest snowpack levels in 500 years. “The results were astonishing,” Valerie Trouet, an associate professor at the University of Arizona, a senior author for the study, told the Wall Street Journal. “We knew it was an all-time low over a historical period, but to see this as a low for the last 500 years, we didn’t expect that. There’s very little doubt about it.” The study was prompted by this April’s measurements of snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. State officials announced they had found “no snow whatsoever,” for the first time in 75 years. The snow water equivalent (SWE) stayed “at only five percent of its
historical average,” the team of researchers said in a statement. “In the Mediterranean climate of California, with 80 percent of precipitation occurring during winter months, Sierra Nevada snowpack plays a critical role in the state’s water reservoir and provides 30 percent of its water supplies,” the paper’s introduction reads. This year’s low snowpack has also coincided with “record-high” January-March temperatures in California. This, scientists warned, can impact “human and natural systems,” including urban and agricultural water supplies and increase risk of wildfires. California has been cutting water use since April, when the governor Jerry Brown (d) issued the state’s first mandatory water restrictions. Cities and towns were ordered to reduce water usage by 25 percent over nine months hoping to save approximately 1, 5 million acrefeet of water. This fire season alone, typically from May to January,
according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire protections, California has seen about a 1,000 more wildfires compared to last year. The three huge fires currently raging in the northern part of the state have prompted evacuation of thousands of people with a state of emergency declared in the region on Sunday. So far, 400 homes have been destroyed, along with two apartment complexes and 10 businesses. Director of the governor’s Office of Emergency Services Mark Ghilarducci has said this summer’s fires are the worst that he has seen in 30 years of emergency response work. The latest study echoes another piece of research by two climate scientists from the University of Minnesota and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who came to the same conclusion in December 2014. Using the same methodology – analysis of blue oak tree rings – they, however, estimated that the California drought has been the worst in 1,200 years.
Musk-have WiFi: If Elon Musk’s idea gets greenlight By Desert Star Staff Elon Musk’s idea of launching 4,000 satellites around the world to bring internet to every corner of the planet has moved to the next phase: the genius inventor is securing government permission to begin testing the technology. Telecom companies in the US better beware, because Musk – who has gone head to head with giant corporations in no less than three other industries – is a force to be reckoned with. The inventor himself lauds his tech and believes it will achieve things in places where previous multi-billion-dollar ventures have failed. The 4,000 satellites are smaller and cheaper than their competitors, and they plan to offer high-speed internet access to a tent in the Sahara Desert, if need be. To Musk, this is akin to “rebuilding the internet in space,” according to the Washington Post. To get the project going, his Space X company, responsible for revolutionary commercial space rockets, will assume the mantle of an Internet provider. The major advantage of this lies not in its ability to compete for quality of service, but the ability to deliver them to much more remote areas, earning millions more customers than other major players. When last year one Twitter user asked the billionaire inventor if the idea was about “free and unfettered Internet access for the masses,” he replied “unfettered certainly and at very low cost.” Space X plans to launch its Falcon 9 rocket into orbit to connect three West Coast satellites with ground stations for the tests, which will assess

Musk hopes the federal government filing he’s launched will enable the testing as early as next year. And if we’re really lucky, the system will be up and running within five. Facebook recently shelved its half-a-billion-dollar plan for global Internet through satellites, although it’s still in the game with an idea to deliver free internet access via a special, solarpowered aircraft. Musk also has competition in the form of Virgin’s Richard Branson, another adventurous billionaire businessman. Google, however, wants to help out: it’s just invested $1 billion in Musk’s venture, together with Fidelity. They gave the money to Space X to support the upcoming satellite launch. Perhaps the more pressing question is finance. The idea to connect everyone by way
of satellites is not new. Back in the 1990s, Microsoft legend Bill Gates attempted to do the same. But costs soared to some $9 billion and the idea was abandoned. Musk has a few tricks up his sleeve. Chief among them is the fact that his own swarm of satellites is cheaper and more efficient, which also means they are easier to replace than those Gates had in mind. Musk has been making off-the-cuff remarks at private meetings, sometimes leaked to YouTube by those present. In January, he said his new venture would constitute “a real enable for people in poorer regions of the world.” He later admitted that permission from countries would be required. SpaceX has already been cashing in on the space transportation market, after NASA ended its shuttle program September 16, 2015
in 2011. The SpaceX’s unmanned Dragon vessel is currently the only spacecraft capable of docking with the International Space Station and then returning to earth with cargo, although it can’t quite get the landing part right yet. While the company has often been viewed as a bit too adventurous when making claims about colonizing Mars, Musk also let slip in January that the Red Planet “is going to need a global communications system too,” adding that the situations aren’t that vastly different between the two planets, “as crazy as that may sound.” And with three industries revolutionized – plus the upcoming Hyperloop concept, also Musk’s baby, it would be crazy to dismiss the billionaire genius’s words for just hot air.

Teen summer popcorn movie juggles virginity woes
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Another summer, another movie about 19 year-old males “losing it” before they turn twenty will be available before the end of the year. I’m not sure if it’s going to DVD or into distribution, but despite the callowness of some of the characters and a formulaic story, “The Bet”, directed by Finola Hughes and scripted by Annie J. Dahlgren and Christina Eliason, has a chance to find an audience. The technically proficient movie is nicely photographed on the beach, and various locations in and around Santa Barbara, California, and of course it’s peopled with nubile young things in bikinis. The leading man/ boy is a shy, bookish spindlylegged high school senior and virgin who is peer-pressured into “losing it” before the summer ends. Teens in their waning years should be able to find some relevancy in this film which might even register
with some older folks as well. The story centers around high school senior Addison Smith (Scott Hagood), who lives with his widowed mother Libby (Portia Thomas) and his paternal grandfather Collier (Tim T. Whitcomb), in Santa Barbara California. Addison is still practicing to drive and to get his license, and, is not one to rush into relationships with girls. His grandfather Collier still fancies himself a ‘player’ and wants to take charge of Addison’s rite of passage into manhood. He talks Addison into a friendly bet: which of them will be the first to ‘score’ with a lady. The rules of engagement for the bet states that Collier selects three potential candidates from the high school, and Addison gets to pick three candidates for his grandfather from the ladies of the local retirement community center. As “the Bet” plays itself out in this lighthearted, sort of silly but sweet rite of passage movie, Libby, Addison’s mom,
also begins to date again after the death of her husband of several years ago. What ensues is three generations of a family, all looking for love – sometimes in the right places, sometimes in the wrong places, sometimes comically, and sometimes poignantly – but none the less always sincere in their various quests. Making her movie debut is Mary J. O’Connor as Jennifer, a
classmate that Addison has been trying to work up enough courage to ask out for a date. The camera loves Miss O’Connor and for good reason. She has a very appealing and wholesome look, with just the right amount of vulnerability and determination that makes their summer romance work. The supporting cast of the adults: John Lombardo as Phil, Marion Frietag as Lorraine, Bob
Larsen as Hugh, along with Crystal Lee Daly as Liz, the bikini-clad blonde hottie trying to seduce Addison on her own, deliver nice support. As I said earlier, the film is an end of summer teen romance vehicle for two young and attractive actors. It should find its way to a movie screen or on DVD dispensers and video on demand on your local cable provider.
