Pope Visits U.S. By Erica Werner WASHINGTON (AP) - House Speaker John Boehner has been trying for 20 years to get a pope to come talk to Congress. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says it’s “thrilling beyond words.” This week’s historic address by Pope Francis to a joint meeting of Congress has lawmakers of all political affiliations and religious backgrounds buzzing. For the many Catholic lawmakers on Capitol Hill, including Republican

Boehner and Democrat Pelosi, the occasion carries special significance, even as they brace for the unconventional pontiff to make both parties squirm with his focus on hot-button political and social issues. Ahead of Thursday’s speech, many lawmakers said they hope that the leader of the globe’s 1.2 billion Catholics will provoke members of Congress to pause, reflect, and refrain, if only temporarily, from the partisan

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Art Museum held a Media Day to show the Killer Heels exhibition. The press was informed by Liz Armstrong, Exec. Director and Assistant Curator. Mara Gladston. The event comes to the Museum through the courtesy of the Brooklyn Museum and showcases over 300 years of shoes with 160 pairs. The Killer Heels display bonds Art, Science, Film and everyday items. Stiletto heel is not a new concept but has been used for centuries to show wealth, status and power. High-heeled shoes have

been used for centuries in China where women wore platform heels with their bound feet to make them more beautiful. Actually, a lot of the high heels and decorated shoes were a big part of the Male Fashion hundreds of years ago to show their status in their countries. I am sure we have all seen paintings and films showing men with coiffed white wigs, embroidered and embellished costumes and of course the tasselled and adorned highheeled shoes, many with platform soles to make them taller. I hate to think that this style of torture for women was

struggles and political bickering that normally dominate the House chamber where he will speak. At the same time, lawmakers have begun invoking the pontiff to make points on one issue or another, with Democrats in particular hopeful that he will provide backing against the Republican majority on issues such as income inequality, immigration and climate change. “There’s always the hope of epiphany,” said Sen. I was amazed to see some of the shoes shown came from the 20s and 30s that I thought were modern-day shoes. The shoes designed, as strictly Art were amazing and made of Bamboo, Plastic, Metals, animal furs and look unwearable. The artistry in some of the shoes was astonishing. Whitehouse, D-R.I., a leading voice in Congress pushing for action to combat global warming. Some in the GOP are suspicious of the pope’s activist stance on such issues. One House Republican, Paul Gosar of Arizona, announced plans to boycott Francis’ speech because of reports that the pontiff might focus on climate change. Gosar argued that “if the pope wants to devote his life to fighting climate change, then he can do so in

his personal time” and said the pontiff should use his foray into “hell’s den” - Congress - to focus on religious tolerance and the sanctity of life. But Republicans can take comfort in other positions Francis advocates, including opposition to abortion, and may hear him speak about that amid pressure from conservatives to use mustpass spending legislation in

Cinema Diverse

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 8th edition of The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival, Cinema Diverse, was held on September 17 through the 20th. The festival was held at the Camelot Theatre that has been a big supporter of Film Festivals in the Valley. Camelot Theatre owners Ric and Rozene Supple are the Founders of the Palm Springs Cultural Center and are thrilled to see this film festival grow the way it has. Managing Director Michael Green introduced the initial film and the sponsors on Opening night. The first film of the festival shown on Thursday night was, Eisenstein in Guanajuato. Councilwoman Ginny Foat spoke to the audience as a representative for the city of Palm Springs who is a sponsor for the Festival. Guests were given tickets to cast a ballot on their rating of the films. The festival has garnered many new sponsors from the Valley that included many smaller businesses this year along with the larger ones that have continued to sponsor the Festival for many years. There is tremendous community

support for this festival and others. It takes many volunteers and many hours to produce a successful festival each year. This festival has added so many more feature films and shorts this year. They have added workshops for the 100 plus filmmakers attending. coming days to remove funding for Planned Parenthood. Senate Republicans scheduled a bill to block most late-term abortions for Tuesday, just ahead of Francis’ arrival, provoking complaints from Democrats. “I just hope that what we hear are things that are less close to specific policies before us than the higher aspirational goals for the world,” said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for me. Billions of Catholics never get to be in the same city with him, versus being in the same room, so I’m just excited to be there and to hear what he has to say.” With Boehner and Vice

President Joe Biden, another Catholic, seated behind him, Francis will become the rare religious leader to address a joint meeting of Congress. According to the House historian, the first was Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. The British monarch is also technically head of the Anglican Church. Officially Francis will be speaking in his capacity as head of state of Vatican City. Tens of thousands of people are expected to throng the Capitol, where Francis’ address will be broadcast on Jumbotrons on the West Front to those who were able to get tickets. After he speaks to Congress he’s expected to step out to the West Front

to greet the crowds. His entire visit to the Capitol is scheduled to last just 90 minutes, yet the planning and preparations have been intense: a combination of “a State of the Union address and an inauguration,” Pelosi told reporters. Competition for tickets has been intense. Lawmakers were granted one each to distribute for the House gallery, and one each for the West Front, plus 50 standing-room tickets for the West Lawn for House members, and 200 for senators. In advance, House and Senate leaders sent a letter to lawmakers emphasizing decorum, “out of respect for the pope’s schedule and the expectations of a timely address.” The letter asks lawmakers

to refrain from handshakes and conversations along the center aisle as dignitaries and the pope arrive, noting that the speech “will be seen around the world and by many of our constituents.” Similar appeals are sent to lawmakers ahead of State of the Union addresses and other events. This time, leaders hope to avoid the partisan outbursts and competing outbreaks of applause that sometimes characterize such occasions. “My hope is that we will be a dignified, respectful audience for the pope’s message. This is not a State of the Union speech where members act in very partisan ways as if it’s a high school pep rally at times,” said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a Catholic who is bringing her 88-year-old mother

to the address. “Fortunately this pope is very approachable and down to earth and humble so I don’t think he will easily take offense,” Collins added. The pope will address a Congress where Catholics are overrepresented compared to the general population, according to the Pew Research Center. Catholics account for 30 percent of members of Congress, compared with 22 percent of American adults generally. “I think there’s a lot of interest in what the pope is saying, his outreach to the poor, the fact he thinks people ought to be more religious,” Boehner said recently in remarks released by his office. “He’s got some other positions that are a bit more controversial. But it’s the pope.”

overlooking one of the most critical tools to meet that goal. Unfortunately, too many people lack a full understanding of all the ways permanent life insurance can be used to provide financial security. They see it as a single utility product, when it’s really more like a Swiss Army knife — it can be used for an amazingly diverse range of needs. Given the lack of knowledge about life insurance, it’s understandable that when surveyed, most respondents believe life insurance is used for paying funeral expenses (68 percent) and providing income for survivors (59 percent). But few cite the product’s other living benefits. Many people forget that they can access the cash value build up in their life insurance plan to help them when an emergency occurs. Without losing the protection of life insurance, they can withdraw a loan from the policy at a low interest rate.

have estate taxes upon death, life insurance is the best way to pay estate taxes. Upon death of the insured, the tax free benefit amount is paid to an irrevocable trust. The beneficiaries of the trust have immediate funds to pay taxes. By setting up an irrevocable trust the life insurance is not included in the estate value. Life insurance is sometimes used to equalize an estate. For example, if the insured’s wish for one descendent to inherit their home and the balance of the estate cannot reward other descendants equally, life insurance is a great solution. When I began my career, it amazed me, that with the signing of a life insurance plan, a person immediately created an estate, which they could have worked a lifetime for. There are many good riders that can be added to one’s policy, such as the critical illness rider, a children’s rider to provide

burial expense, long term care rider, accidental death rider offering double or triple indemnity for an untimely death, and an accelerated benefit rider to help those critically ill to access benefits prior to death. It is a financial tool that can provide miracles. It is a gift of love. You can leave this world knowing that all those whom you have cared about, will receive your gift to help balance their lives. In turn it can also help you in your lifetime.

Allowing free discussion by all attending members may seem neighborly, but everybody in the room will not read the entire board packet and is not willing to be held legally accountable for the decision - so it’s better to allow the board to do its job. It may also be the answer in helping with the down payment on a mortgage. The key factor in taking a loan from the policy is to establish a plan to pay off that loan. Eventually the lower cash value and interest rate of the loan will cause an increase in the monthly payment. Permanent life insurance requires a level of cash value to equal the death benefit proportionately. It is important to check with your insurance carrier to find out the amount needed to keep the payment level for your lifetime. It is always wiser to do this as early as possible. If the premium goes too high, it could force one to give up the insurance totally. It may be possible to lower the death benefit to keep the policy in force. The cash can be used to pay off mortgages or loans with higher interest rates. Sometimes it is used to pay for college and to help in funding retirement. For those people who will

Some of those flourishes are a function of NobleDEN’s location, which is where some of New York’s most beguiling neighborhoods meet: Soho, Little Italy, Nolita (north of Little Italy), Chinatown and the Lower East Side. I personally mentioned Asian influences, and they’re there, from the earthy color schemes with touches of lime green, blue and/or orange (depending on the room), but so are delectable hot pastries from the famous Ferrara bakery across the street: they arrive each morning on a platter in the small lobby, and you can enjoy them and a cup of coffee at no extra charge. During my stay, I spotted wafer-thin Fashion Week models nibbling on raspberry mini-croissants while I mapped out my day. Whether you love New York or hate it, one thing is sure: it can be exhausting, all the more reason to choose a small hotel

I was astounded by the both the immaculateness of the rooms and the quiet – the owner ensured they’re all soundproofed. The King Juliette rooms look out onto the redbrick storefronts of Grand Street. There are Double Full and Double Queen rooms as well as Double Full Balcony rooms, which feature Zen-like wood balconies in the rear: a rarity in New York (the King Penthouse features a sitting balcony over Grand Street). An Noble Den and new friend in New York City

Photo by NobleDEN hotel By Anthony Grant Now that JetBlue has announced seasonal non-stop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Palm Springs International Airport (PSP), starting Jan.14, it’s time to think New York. That said, the more you travel the more you realize the best experiences sometimes come from a complete lack of planning. I recently found myself in New York City during Fashion Week, an event that while of interest to perhaps 1 percent of the population of New York has the strange effect of filling hotel rooms to nearly 100 percent capacity. It meant that virtually all my favorite hotels in New York were sold out, so when an unknown property in a neighborhood I barely know came up on Expedia.com at a reasonable (for New York City) rate, I pounced on it. And that’s how I found my new best friend in Manhattan: the NobleDEN hotel. I liked this hotel so much that I’m almost reluctant to spill the beans, therefore, consider this less a shout than a whisper. In its present incarnation, the hotel’s website (www.nobleden. com) does not do the property justice – not that’s a complaint, because the false impression of humdrum, it conveys probably led to the unexpected availability on the night when I really needed a hotel in downtown Manhattan. Let me start with what NobleDEN is not: neither www.desertstarweekly.com

1 in 4 college women report unwanted sexual contact

By Julie Carr Smyth COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Nearly a quarter of undergraduate women surveyed at more than two dozen universities say they experienced unwanted sexual contact sometime during college, according to a report released Monday. The results of the Association of American Universities Campus Climate Survey come at a time of heightened scrutiny of the nation’s colleges and universities and what they are doing to combat sexual assault. Just last week, Vice President Joe Biden visited Ohio State University to highlight several new initiatives, including mandatory sexual violence awareness training for the school’s freshmen beginning next year. The survey was sent this spring to nearly 780,000 students at the association’s member colleges, plus one additional university. About 150,000 participated in the online questionnaire. The results were generally in line with past surveys on sexual assault and misconduct on college campuses - and confirmed that alcohol and drugs are important risk factors. “How many surveys will it take before we act with the

urgency these crimes demand?” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, who is pushing for passage of a bill that would address how sexual assault cases are handled on campus and the resources available to help students. Researchers cautioned against generalizations from the data, partly because experiences of different students and at different schools could vary widely. It was not a representative sample of all the nation’s colleges and universities. Some students attended schools that have recently grappled with reports of sexual assaults or misconduct, including the University of Virginia, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Ohio State. University of Virginia President Teresa A. Sullivan has said that a widely discredited and later retracted Rolling Stone magazine story about a gang-rape at a fraternity house harmed efforts to fight sexual violence and tarred the school’s reputation. Hazing that included excessive underage drinking and sexualized conduct prompted the University of WisconsinMadison to terminate a fraternity chapter earlier this year. And

Ohio State fired its marching band director last year after an internal investigation turned up a “sexualized culture” of rituals and traditions inside the celebrated organization. The Obama administration has taken steps to push colleges to better tackle the problem of sexual assault, including releasing the names of 55 colleges and universities last year that were facing Title IX investigations for their handling of such cases. Participating schools said survey results will bolster their ongoing efforts. Dartmouth said Monday it will form a committee of students; faculty and staff to analyze the data, as well as conduct its own attitudes survey starting in October. Gregory Fenves, president of The University of Texas at Austin, said, “It is essential that we foster a campus that does not tolerate sexual assaults while strongly encouraging victims to come forward and report incidents.” Overall, 23 percent of undergraduate women at the participating universities said they had been physically forced - or threatened with force - into nonconsensual sexual contact. For undergraduate men, the

percentage was 5 percent. Freshman women appeared to be at greater risk than older students for the most serious sexual assaults - those involving penetration. About 17 percent of freshman females said they had been victims of this type of assault. For women asked about their senior year, the percentage was about 11 percent. The survey provided a rare glimpse into the experiences of the small percentage of students who are transgender or who don’t identify as either male or female. Undergraduates in that category reported the highest rate of the most serious nonconsensual acts. “Our universities are working to ensure their campuses are safe places for students,” AAU President Hunter Rawlings said in a statement. “The primary goal of the survey is to help them better understand the experiences and attitudes of their students with respect to this challenge.” The study found that only a relatively small percentage of serious incidents was reported to the university or another group, including law enforcement. Across the institutions, it ranged from 5 percent to 25 percent. The most common reason

cited by students for not reporting an incident was that they didn’t consider it serious enough. Others said they were embarrassed or ashamed or “did not think anything would be done about it.” Those who chose to report the incidents, however, said they had generally favorable experiences. Well over half said their experience with the organization that handled the report was very good or excellent. Kentucky clerk could head back to court over licenses

Clerk Kim Davis, with Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee By Adam Beam And Claire Galofaro FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) She’s already spent five days in jail, and now a Kentucky clerk could be back in court soon for altering marriage license forms issued to same-sex couples. On Monday, lawyers for two gay couples and two straight couples questioned the validity of the new marriage licenses and asked a federal judge to order Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis’ office to reissue them. If she refuses, the lawyers asked the judge to put the office in receivership and have someone else do it. Davis is prepared to return to jail over her beliefs, according to an interview that aired Tuesday morning on “Good Morning America” - the first she’s given since her refusal to issue licenses gained national

attention. “I have never once spouted a word of hate. I have not been hateful,” she said. She also said the licenses going out of her office now, issued by a deputy clerk, don’t have her authorization and are “not valid in God’s eyes.” Davis stopped issuing all marriage licenses in June after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling effectively legalized gay marriage nationwide. Two gay couples and two straight couples sued her. A federal judge ordered Davis to issue the licenses, and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld that order. But Davis refused, citing “God’s authority.” That’s when U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning threw her in jail, prompting a fierce debate in the public square about religious

liberty versus the civil rights afforded to all U.S. citizens. Davis’ office issued marriage licenses while she was in jail, but the licenses did not include her name. Bunning ruled those licenses were valid and released Davis on the condition that she not interfere with her employees. Davis, a Democrat, was greeted at the Carter County Detention Center by a crowd of thousands and a church choir, flanked by her attorney and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. But when Davis returned to work last week, she confiscated the marriage licenses and replaced them. The new licenses say they were issued not under the authority of the county clerk, but “pursuant to federal court order.” On Monday, lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union wrote that the validity of the altered licenses is “questionable at best,” and the new licenses bring “humiliation and stigma” to the gay couples who receive them. They asked Judge Bunning to order Davis’ office to reissue the licenses. If Davis interferes, the lawyers say Bunning should place her office in a receivership for the purposes of issuing marriage licenses. “The adulterated marriage licenses received by Rowan County couples will effectively feature a stamp of animus against the LGBT community, September 23, 2015

signaling that, in Rowan County, the government’s position is that LGBT couples are secondclass citizens unworthy of official recognition and authorization of their marriage licenses but for this Court’s intervention and Order,” the lawyers for the couples wrote in a court filing. Mat Staver, Davis’ attorney and founder of the Liberty Counsel law firm, did not directly respond to the ACLU’s request for Bunning to put the office in a receivership. Staver said he would formally respond to the ACLU’s motion Tuesday. But he noted that Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear said last week that the altered marriage licenses would be recognized by the state. “Kim Davis has made a good-faith effort to comply with the court’s order,” Staver said. “The ACLU’s motion to again hold Kim Davis in contempt reveals that their interest is not the license but rather a marriage license bearing the name of Kim Davis. They want her scalp to hang on the wall as a trophy.” S a m M a rc o s s o n , a constitutional law professor at the University of Louisville, said such receiverships are “unusual and extraordinary,” generally reserved for situations where other legal remedies are unable to end an ongoing violation of the law. Marcosson described what the plaintiffs are now requesting as a “limited takeover” of her office. The judge could appoint

another person to oversee the issuance of marriage licenses, both to ensure that the licenses are issued legally and to protect the deputy clerks, who have the difficult choice to defy their boss or defy a judge. “It’s almost a worst-case scenario,” he said. “The worstcase scenario would be to send her to jail again.” The judge has wide discretion on who might be appointed. It could be a lawyer, another Rowan County public official or any citizen the judge trusts to carry out his orders impartially, Marcosson said. He said the judge will likely call a hearing, where he might hear testimony about the process Davis undertook to alter the licenses or the instructions she gave to her deputy clerks. In her Tuesday interview, Davis was frequently tearful, and she said that she’s received hate mail, with people calling her Hitler and a homophobe. But she says she’s not a hypocrite, despite her own four marriages. “I haven’t always been a good person,” she acknowledged. But she said that she’s been forgiven, that godly authority trumps all, and that she won’t resign her position. ‘I’m good at my job,” she said. “I have friends who are gay and lesbians. They know where I stand. And we don’t agree on this issue, and we’re OK because we respect each other.” Source: KMIR/AP www.desertstarweekly.com

Muslim can’t be elected US president, says GOP candidate Carson

By Desert Star Weekly Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has triggered a massive public backlash by openly declaring that he would not endorse a Muslim as President of the United States, as he claims that Islam is not compatible with the US constitution. Speaking to NBC News’ ‘Meet the Press’ Carson said that he would “not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.” The reason for the retired brain surgeon’s views, he claims is the fact that some faiths are not aligned with the US constitution. “I guess it depends on what that faith is. If it’s inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the constitution, no problem,” Carson said. The comments sparked an outrage among the Muslim community in the United States with the country’s largest Muslim civil rights group condemning the politician’s reasoning. It’s beyond the pale and he should withdraw,” said Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) spokesman Ibrahim Hooper. “This disqualifies him from being a president,”CAIR director Nihad Awad said. “My advice to GOP presidential candidates: Read the US constitution if you haven’t yet! It keeps America great.” Politicians meanwhile spoke out against any infringement on rights and freedoms. “Every American should be disturbed that these national figures are engaging in and tolerating blatant acts of religious

bigotry,” the first Muslim elected to Congress, Representative Keith Ellison said. “It’s unimaginable that the leading GOP presidential candidates are resorting to fear mongering to benefit their campaigns.” Democratic presidential hopeful, Senator Bernie Sander said he was “disappointed” in Carson. “It took us too long to overcome the prejudice against electing a Catholic or an AfricanAmerican president. People should be elected to office based on their ideas, not their religion or the color of their skin,” Sanders said. Democratic Representative, Debbie Wasserman Schultz meanwhile called for an apology from Carson. “Of course a Muslim, or any other American citizen, can run for president, end of story. To think otherwise is not only harmful to our political process, but it elevates and validates

discrimination in this country,” she said. Even Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, another presidential candidate, spoke out against Carson’s comments, also calling for an apology. “I think Dr. Carson needs to apologize,” Graham said, adding the comments were particularly offensive to American soldiers who are Muslim. In response to criticism, Carson’s campaign office said that they support religious freedom, and tried to explain that Carson just “believes that the American people are far from ready to accept a Muslim as President in our Judeo-Christian society.” “Without question, there are complex differences between the practice of the Muslim faith and our Constitution, differences that are very real and very much in conflict with one another,” spokesman Doug Watts said.

Watts stressed that Carson did not say that a Muslim should be prevented from running in the Presidential race, adding that Carson has “great respect” for the Muslim community. According to the latest national CNN/ORC poll, Donald Trump is the Republican party’s front-runner with 24 percent support. Carly Fiorina ranks second with 15 percent support just ahead of Ben Carson, who has one percentage point less. Odd statements about the divisive issues of faith and race have been making headlines among Republican Presidential hopefuls. Donald Trump let pass unchallenged anti-Muslim comments made by a supporter asserting that US President Barack Obama was a Muslim. Trump later said he was not “morally obligated” to defend Obama against the man’s unfounded claim.

CANCER Relationships with family, children, nurture and things nourishing may test you along with changes in these relationships. There could be strengthening ties, seeking more recognition or separations. Whatever occurs is for the best. There may be pressure to complete tasks, reorganize the home and work environments, be more responsible, to serve more. You need more sleep in the next couple of years, more rest each day.

LEO You may begin to feel that there’s no energy or vital life spark left inside. That your purpose is no longer known. Or that your creativity has disappeared. What’s occurring is a restructuring of the self, a new self is developing, leading to a stronger sense of artistic and creative purpose and expression. Before new identities emerge, the old must die away. You consider past love affairs. Seeing they were good. Forgiving yourself and them. It’s the season.

VIRGO Re-evaluate, re-work, re-orient, re-order, re-structure. These are Saturn’s tasks offered to you the next two years. These will significantly change you personally and psychologically, slowly over time. Creating a state of preparation for greater creative expressiveness. And how does it apply to you? You are to tend to finances, know you’re worth everything, become practical and slow down. More later.

SAGITTARIUS You are to follow the directions given above in Scorpio. But more seriously. For you are the ‘Archer’. Saturn will be creating a complete change of personal identity in the next years. Your physical body must be tended to carefully. You will become more mature, somber. A new sense of self-confidence will form. After the old one fades away. Guard against discouragement as a new inner courage is being built. Simplify your life in every way.

CAPRICORN You are completing one cycle of life and beginning a new cycle. In the middle of the two there is a transition; a looking inward, a deep reflection of all that’s occurred before. Creating a truthfulness and cleansing, seeking emotions hiding away, bringing them to the light. This may feel uncomfortable. But it’s good & necessary. Saturn wants to take all the goodness within you and prepare the future with it.

AQUARIUS You’ve been a very responsible person these last years, learning about your place in the world. Now things will begin to change. Transitioning into you seeking hopes, wishes and dreams, asking who your friends are and how to build and create community. You search for like-minded others, no longer sustaining casual unhelpful relationships. You consider your happiness, your needs and the future to prepare for. You will do all that’s needed. Steadily.

PISCES A new set of rules, agendas, structures, disciplines appear concerning your work in the world. A secure professional foundation of your visions will be built over the next several years. Saturn steps in to anchor what one’s task is in the world. There will be recognition and rewards along with greater duties and responsibilities. It’s important to call forth Right Discernment, Right Timing, Right Choice in all endeavors. These virtues are the result of aligning with the Will-toGood. It’s time. Facebook snoops on people just like NSA

By Desert Star Staff Facebook is spying on people in “the very same way” that the US’s National Security Agency (NSA) does, said the Belgian data protection watchdog at a court hearing where the social network stands accused of violating the privacy of internet users. “When it became known that the NSA was spying on people all around the world, everybody was upset. This actor [Facebook] is doing the very same thing, albeit

in a different way,” said Frederic Debussere, a lawyer representing the Belgian privacy commission (BPC) at the Monday court hearing. The Belgian watchdog has filed a lawsuit against the social network, accusing it of breaching EU law and violating the privacy rights of Internet users. The BPC issued a report in March, arguing that Facebook tracked everyone, even users who had logged-out and people who don’t even have a Facebook account at all, via the

use of cookies and the ‘like’ or ‘share’ buttons which can be found on more than 13 million websites worldwide. This is possible, the report claimed, because the cookies are automatically installed on the computers of internet users each time they visit a page containing a Facebook plug-in, such as the ‘like’ button. According to EU law, websites must ask for a user’s permission before installing any cookies. This is why Facebook’s

policy is considered to in “violation of the European law” by the BPC. Don’t be intimidated by Facebook. They will argue our demands cannot be implemented in Belgium alone. Our demands can be perfectly implemented just in this country,” said Frederic Debussere, addressing the court. Facebook has consistently denied all accusations and claimed that its practices are in compliance with EU law, accusing the BPC of presenting false reports. We will show the court how this technology protects people from spam, malware, and other attacks, that our practices are consistent with EU law and with those of the most popular Belgian websites,” a Facebook spokesperson said, as quoted by the Guardian. Addressing questions about the company’s cookie policy,

another Facebook representative, Paul Lefebvre, said that “they allow Facebook Ireland to identify bad faith attempts to gain access via the browser being used,” adding that if Belgium imposed a ban on this Facebook activity, the country “would become a cradle for cyber terrorism.” Additionally, Facebook rejects the very idea it could be held accountable in Belgium as the company’s European headquarters are located in Dublin, Ireland, and its activities watched over by that country’s data protection authority. The company does not rule out returning to talks with the BPC. The case is now being closely watched by the rest of the EU’s 28 privacy watchdogs, including that of Holland, which has also started to question Facebook’s activities and privacy policy.

I N S I D E H O L LY W O O D Patricia Clarkson on Character Choices & Women of Today WITH BEVERLY COHN

Patricia Clarkson and Alexander Siddig in a scene from “Cairo Time.”

Patricia Clarkson You can be sure if Patricia Clarkson is in a film, you will be treated to a performance that is sheer perfection. Her approach to acting is both unique and compelling as she imbues her characters with her own quirky, but organic interpretations. With her Veronica Lake** hairstyle, harkening back to the days of Hollywood glamour, Clarkson lights up the screen with her mega-watt smile, and intriguing on-screen presence. This Louisiana native is not just another beautiful southern belle. She is highly educated, having attended Louisiana State University, Fordham University, and eventually graduated from the Yale School of Drama with a Master of Fine Arts. She acted in some of the most enduring classics including: Electra, Pericles, Twelfth Night, The Lower Depths, The Misanthrope, Pacific Overtures and La Ronde. C l a r k s o n ’s stage

training informed her screen work as evidenced by her characterizations in the following films, some of which go back to the 1980s: The Untouchables, The Dead Pool, The Green Mile, Far from Heaven, Pieces of April, The Station Agent, Good Night, and Good Luck, Lars, and the Real Girl, Cairo Time, Elegy, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Shutter Island, The East, and Friends with Benefits. Equally at home on television, she has appeared in many episodic programs including: Tales from the Crypt, Law & Order, Murder One, Wonderland, Frasier, Six Feet Under, and Parks and Recreation. Once again, Clarkson delivers a compelling performance in her latest film, Learning to Drive, which co-stars the iconic Sir Ben Kingsley. Directed by Isabel Coixet, the script, written by Sarah Kernochan, revolves around Wendy, a very successful

book critic whose husband has just left her for a younger woman. She wants to learn how to drive and hires a driving instructor named Darwan, played by Sir Ben Kingsley, who endows his character with a magical life’s force. This is not a soapy adventure, but one where each of the characters emerges stronger as a result of their experiences with each other. The supporting cast includes: Jake Weber, Sarita Choudhury, and Grace Gummer. Clarkson recently sat down with a select group of journalists and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.

friend. I loved working with him on Elegy. I don’t know if you remember us from that film, but I got very intimate with him. Let’s just say that once you… uh… I know him well and he knows me well. (Laughter) (They did a nude scene together.) And, that was our first day of shooting. (She sings) “Getting To Know You.” It was a great way to break the ice and I can’t think of a more intimate way to break the ice. (Laughter) So, it was just a dream to work with him on this movie, which has been a passion project of mine for a long time. I could not have done without Sir Ben and Isabel.

Look at you! You look beautiful! Clarkson: I just did a television spot. My hair, make-up and dress - it’s all wasted on you, right? (Laughter - Alluding to the fact we are print journalists.)

You are known for working on quirky material and are not particularly interested in films that are just “commercial.” What is the genesis of this material? Clarkson: It’s based on an essay from the New Yorker. I just found it so tragic and funny and true. I’m 55 but at the time I read it, I was 45. I’m now thankful that we couldn’t get the financing, director, or a co-star when I was in my 40s, as I needed to be in my 50s to properly play her. What I love about the script is it’s very mature. It’s a beautiful story about a profound adult friendship. The lines can always get slightly blurred with a straight man and a woman, but in the end, the real truth prevails about their separate worlds.

We just interviewed Sir Ben and had a great time. What was it like working with him? Clarkson: He’s the consummate actor - the consummate professional. He’s an actor’s actor. There’s no one like him in the world. I know him well and consider him a personal

What drew you to the character of Wendy and how would you describe her? Clarkson: This is not a story about a woman finding herself. My generation of women is the first generation to have it all. Our mothers made great sacrifices. We’re able to have jobs, partners, lovers, spouses, and children adopted or surrogate. Wendy is a woman who forgot to look up and forgot to appreciate what she had. She had a wonderful husband and a devoted daughter, but the divorce upset her apple cart. This is not a woman who

is use to dealing with emotions. She comes at everything from the head up and suddenly she has to come at everything from the gut. There were some kneeslapping moments, and would she have slept with that guy? Clarkson: I never thought of it as knee slapping. I see it as a more emotional film, even though it’s funny. But I guess I don’t see Wendy as comedic. I see her as angry and mercurial and that’s what I love about her. I also love this yin and yang of their relationship. I love this fiery New Yorker and this beautiful devout Sikh coming together in this smelly little car. As far as having sex with him? The tantric sex? Please! (Laughter) I can’t wait for my old-fashion southern father to see that. (Laughter) My father is a very amazing cool man. He’s a liberal, but he’s still an 80-yearold southern man. (Laughter) How was that Tantric sex scene with Matt Salinger? Clarkson: That was tough. What man do you get to come in for one scene - get naked and simulate Tantric sex? (She laughs) I mean, would you do that? (Much laughter) Would you? (more laughter) My God. I’ve made three men blush. (referring to the journalists.) But really, having Tantric sex with Matt Salinger, J.D. Salinger’s son, doesn’t get any better. How did you introduce the film? Clarkson: When we finished the film, we brought it to the Toronto Film Festival. We didn’t do any pre-screenings, but that first big screening brought the house down. Sir Ben and I got a ten-minute standing ovation. We thought: “Oh my God. What happened?” We had the same reaction at the premiere in New York in front of hard-core, discerning New Yorkers. I couldn’t watch the film because now we were in New York territory. Continues on Page 14 www.desertstarweekly.com

FILM PBS Walt Disney Bio Now Available On DVD BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

Walt Disney was born in 1901, and even though he is no longer with us his artistic legacy is still very much alive. In September, PBS aired “American Experience: Walt Disney,” a film biography about this amazing storyteller who once said, “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.” Disney served in WW, I, but wasn’t sure about what he wanted to do when he returned home. A master storyteller who loved to draw, he eventually decided to create his own animation studio. It was a modest endeavor, and his first cartoon character was a rabbit named Oswald. He sold a series of cartoons based on Oswald to a distributor, and they were

quite popular. Unfortunately the distributor, not Disney, owned the legal rights to the Oswald character. After the first batches of cartoons were purchased the distributor decided to produce the Oswald cartoons without Disney. This came as a complete shock to the naive young artist. Disney was disillusioned, but he didn’t quit. Instead he and fellow artist Ub Iwerks created another cartoon character. Using the basic body of Oswald, they shortened his ears, lengthened his nose and turned Oswald into a mouse. Disney wanted to call him Mortimer, but his wife Lillian didn’t like that name. She suggested calling the little guy Mickey. That name stuck, and an animated icon was born. In 1928, Disney added

s y n c h ro n i z e d s o u n d t o “Steamboat Willie,” his first Mickey Mouse cartoon. He also became Mickey’s voice. The cartoon was an instant success with audiences. They applauded and often requested that the cartoon be repeated more than once. Throughout his life, Walt identified with Mickey, who was his alter ego. Mickey, like his animator, was able to smile and carry on in the face of adversity and in the end, things always worked out well for both. Disney was an innovator that continued to dream, imagine and create new ideas and concepts of the day he died. He had artistic ability, but his greatest talent was as a storyteller who could fill his staff with enthusiasm. Now, almost 50 years after his passing

By Desert Star Staff Three in four Californians supports the right of nurse practitioners to function as primary-care providers instead of having to work under the supervision of a doctor, according to a new AARP survey. AARP California supports state Senate Bill 323, which would expand nurse-practitioner responsibilities. The group’s

advocacy director, Blanca Castro, says the state’s 18,000 nurse practitioners already have the training to handle routine medical care. “Nurse practitioners will be able to do physical exams, review tests, refer patients to specialists and help with chronic-disease management,” she said. Castro said the change would ease California’s shortage

of primary-care providers. Nineteen other states have similar laws. Opponents, including the California Society of Plastic Surgeons, say it’s dangerous to have nurse practitioners doing a physician’s job. Castro counters that patient safety is not at risk. “You have professionals who have gone to extensive education,” she said. “They’re

in 1966, the Disney Studio remains a bastion of magical, inspiring family entertainment. Born in Chicago, Disney grew up in both rural Marceline, Missouri and urban Kansas City. Most of his early upbringing mirrored the values of the great American Midwest. He also came from a big family, so he instinctively knew what Americans wanted in the way of wholesome entertainment. In 1932, the Disney Studio created “Flowers and Trees,” the initial color animation in history, and it received the first Academy Award given to a cartoon. This was eventually followed by “Snow White,” the first fulllength animated film. Unlike most animated works, “Snow White” was a full-length story that not only made you laugh; it also made you cry. Then came “Pinocchio,” “Bambi,” “Dumbo” and “Fantasia.” Disney films were not just animated cartoons. They were masterful works of art. “Snow White” was a worldwide phenomenon and a major financial success for the studio, but subsequent films like “Pinocchio” did not fare as well at the box office due to the war. The conflict ended the opportunity for worldwide distribution. This put a greater burden on the studio, but Roy Disney could keep their enterprise from going under. While Walt was the creative force, it was Roy who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the studio financially stable during times of crisis...

On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened with complete television coverage on ABC-TV. Walt wanted to create an amusement park that would thrill families with castles, a frontier land and magical attractions like flying Dumbos and swirling teacups you could ride in. Then in 1963 Walt and Roy purchased 27,443 acres of land in Florida, the future site of Walt Disney World, for $5 million. The PBS “Walt Disney” bio brings all these events to vivid life with film footage and commentary by Disney’s biographers and film historians who paint a full portrait of the man who loved people and wanted to be called Walt, not Mr. Disney. He loved his family, but could be a hard task master. He was a man driven by a passion for perfection and expected that same effort and devotion from his staff. Along with Disney’s unimaginable triumphs, there were failures, strikes and difficult times. He sought perfection in his work and in his life, but under stress, he smoked excessively and drank as well. November 23, 1966 was the last day Walt spent at the studio. On December 15, 1966, Walt Disney died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, across the street from the Walt Disney Studios. His brother Roy was with him as Walt talked about his next dream project, EPCOT, a prototype for the city of tomorrow. Everything comes to life in this fascinating PBS biography about a man who built his kingdom on a mouse.

MUSIC Highly-anticipated releases deliver BY ROBERT KINSLER

Highly-anticipated releases from Don Henley and Gary Clark Jr., as well as a historic concert featuring guitar icons Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin are out now.

Artist: Don Henley Title: Cass County (Capitol) You might like if you enjoy: The Eagles, Merle Haggard, Martina McBride Tell me more: Fifteen years after his last solo album (2000’s “Inside Job”), Don Henley has returned with a full-on country album “Cass County” (aptly named after the rural region of Texas where he grew up). The 68-year-old singer-songwriter calls on a star-studded cast of the celebrated likes of Mick Jagger, Merle Haggard, Miranda Lambert, Dolly Parton and Martina McBride across the 16-track deluxe edition on an album that works as a

musical celebration of Henley’s country influences simultaneously enriched via introspective lyrics that examine love, loss and life with poetic candor. The majority of songs here are mid-tempo or ballads, adorned with acoustic guitar, piano, mandolin, harmonica and pedal steel. The lead-off track, a take on singer-songwriter Tift Merritt’s “A Bramble Rose,” is a spirited treat with Henley, Lambert and Jagger sharing lead vocals; even more powerful is a poignant “Cost Of Living” where Haggard uses his rich baritone . A reworking of the Louvin Brothers’ “When I Stop Dreaming” is a lovely oldtime country duet where Henley and Parton blend their voices together beautifully. The album closes out with a great Eaglesstyled country rocker, “Where I Am Now” with Henley celebrating his rewarding life. A key point here; definitely purchase the deluxe

Navy Agrees to Limit Sonar to Protect Whales By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – The U.S. Navy has agreed to stop using sonar and explosives in sensitive areas off the coasts of California and Hawaii to protect marine mammals. This week, a federal court ratified a legal settlement, ending two cases brought against the Navy by conservation groups. They argued that sonar can cause whales and dolphins to go deaf and even die, and that constant marine-training exercises harass the animals, who then alter their patterns of feeding and breeding. Attorney David Henkin with the nonprofit law firm

Earthjustice said this resolution was a long time coming. “For many years, we have been urging the Navy to take some reasonable steps,” he said, “and the response consistently has been that, ‘It’s not possible to do that.’ “ The Navy now has agreed to take the animals’ needs into account when scheduling its war games and other training exercises. Ships will avoid corridors important to reproduction, feeding and migration, especially near San Diego Bay, Catalina Island and the Channel Islands. Attorney Zak Smith with the Natural Resources Defense

Council said his organization has been working on this issue for 15 years. He applauded the Navy for agreeing to slow its ships down in certain areas, in order to reduce ship strikes of whales. “This is a great result to settle those disagreements,” he said, “by showing that we can achieve all our national security needs while at the same time maximizing protections for marine mammals.” Parts of the agreement take effect immediately and others within 60 days. The settlement expires in 2018. The settlement agreement is online at earthjustice.org. Source: Public News Service

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Today marks National Voter Registration Day, and a major change to the way California registers its voters sits on the governor’s desk awaiting his signature. Assembly Bill 1461 would require the Department of Motor Vehicles to automatically register residents to vote when they apply for, or renew, their

California driver’s license or state I.D. card – unless that person specifically opts out. Trudy Schafer, senior director for programs with the League of Women Voters of California, says the system would include new keypads that enable license applicants to fill out one form for both the license and voter registration. “It asks you your party

preference, and asks if you want to be a permanent vote-by-mail voter,” she says. “It lets you do all of the work that would give you the kind of information we think everybody needs with every election.” An estimated 7 million Californians are eligible to vote but are not registered. Schafer says the bill specifies that non-citizens applying for

driver licenses are excluded from the voter registration. She would like the governor to direct the DMV to get the changes in place right away. “We would like him to make it very clear that the DMV should start implementing the streamlined voter registration early in 2016,” she says. “It should happen before the June primary.”

Governor Brown has until Oct. 11 to sign some 600 bills, veto them, or let them become law without a signature. Additional voter information is available at the California Secretary of State website at registertovote.ca.gov Source: Publish News Services

He was very sexy. Enough about that. (Laughter) I would drive country roads, and those are easy. But, as it got closer and closer to this film coming to fruition, I realized my fear. I could get a tiny bit “Method*” when I want to, so I was specifically not driving or thinking about driving. I saved it all for the film to connect to where art and life merge.

What was the scariest moment for you in the car? Clarkson: Driving through Manhattan was difficult and I was actually behind the wheel, but driving over the Queensborough Bridge, I looked at Sir Ben and said “I adore you. Hold on. I promise I will get you to the other side, but if we don’t make it over the bridge, I’ve loved every minute of my life with you.” (Laughter)

to Drive, so I met Gabriel for dinner at my favorite restaurant in New York. We sat in my booth and for three hours we never talked about the movie . We talked about our lives. He talked about his mother who passed away. We talked about love. We talked about the world. We talked about everything you can imagine, but never talked about the film. At the end of dinner, he said, “I’m going to make this movie.” I’ll never forget that as long as I live.

It wasn’t a blind date, but sort of a fix-up.

Patricia Clarkson On Character Choices, & Women of Today Do you drive? Clarkson: My father taught me how to drive at sixteen. So, yes, I drove in New Orleans. But, after living in New York for over 30 years, I slowly became this New Yorker and lost the ability to drive. I dated a man who lived in the country, so I would drive his Subaru – ooo sexy. (Laughter)

How did the casting of Meryl Streep’s, daughter Grace Gummer, come about? Clarkson: There’s an interesting story about Grace. I met her at a premiere almost six years ago. I have an odd sixth sense. I knew she was Meryl’s daughter. I walked up to her and I looked at her and said: “If and when I get this movie made called Learning to Drive, I want you to play my daughter.” Six years later, I said: “Grace, I want you to play my daughter.”

With her hair draped over one eye, Patricia Clarkson’s beauty harkens back to the days of Hollywood glamorous stars such as Veronica Lake.

Do you have a memorable moment during the shoot? Clarkson: A memorable moment...I’ll tell you the most memorable moment, and it’s not about the shooting. You’re a single woman. How do you meet men and have you ever had a blind date? Clarkson: First of all, I’ve never really had a blind date to be honest with you.

One more question. You studied at Yale. Do you have a specific technique for developing a character and what do you look for first? Clarkson: I’m the opposite of Wendy. The emotional life of the character has to come first. So, I begin to explore how much of my true emotions are there because I like to keep it as true and pure as possible. I marry the emotions of a character to my emotional life so that it lives deeply and organically inside of me. Usually, when I pass on a project, it’s because I couldn’t find the emotional life of the character – it didn’t awaken in me, so I realize that maybe that role isn’t for me. Also, it’s important that I do my homework and come on set prepared. Everybody has been working sixteen hours and I don’t want anybody on the set waiting while I find my inner self and find an emotion.

You’re not missing anything. (Laughter) Clarkson: It’s not like I could go on “OK Cupid.”*** (she whispers) You mean Patricia Clarkson is on “OK Cupid?” (Laughter) I don’t know if that’s cool or sad. Americans Oppose Abolishing the Penny NEW YORK, - With the multitude of Presidential contenders working hard to keep the economy top of mind, it makes sense to look at ways to save money on a national level. Take, for example, the penny. It’s long been suggested in some circles that we abolish it and default to the nickel as our lowest denomination coin for a variety of reasons, ranging from the unused pile of them collecting in your car’s cup holder to the fact that at last report, they cost nearly twice as much to make as they’re worth. But while opposition to abolishing the penny is softening (51%, down from 56% in 2008) and support for the idea is on the rise (29%, up from 24%), the “nay’s” appear to have it for the time being. These are some of the results

of The Harris Poll of 2,273 U.S. adults surveyed online between July 15 and 20, 2015. Full results of this study, including data tables, can be found here. While majorities oppose dropping the penny from circulation, some groups are more likely than others to support the idea: Men are roughly twice as likely as women to favor abolishing the penny (39% vs. 20%). Regionally, support for getting rid of the penny is highest in the East and the West (34% each, vs. 27% in the Midwest and 23% in the South) Liberals (34%) and Moderates (30%) are more likely than Conservatives (23%) to favor the idea. Additionally, those with higher annual household incomes

(peaking at 44% of those in households earning $100k+) are far more likely than those with lower incomes to favor the idea (with support lowest among those in households earning under $35k per year, at 19%). Those in $100k+ households are also at least twice as likely as any other income segment to express a preference for a dollar coin (22% vs. 11% or less for all

other cohorts). Dollar dollar… bills? There have also been several attempts to replace the $1 bill with a coin, but eight in ten Americans (80%, up from 76%) prefer it in paper form. As with the penny proposal, the idea of a dollar coin sits better with some groups than with others: Men are more than twice as likely as women to indicate they’d

prefer a dollar in coin form (19% vs. 7%). Westerners (18%) are most likely to support the idea of a $1 coin (vs. 12% in the Midwest, 11% in the East and 10% in the South). Urbanites (17%) are more likely than their Suburban (12%) or Rural (11%) counterparts to prefer a coin.

By Desert Star Staff SAN DIEGO – The federal government put California swordfishermen on notice Monday, warning they’ll be banned if they continue to inadvertently catch endangered species, whales, dolphins and sea turtles in their nets. The Pacific Fishery Management Council set caps on the number of marine mammals that can be killed as bycatch when fishing boats use the milelong, 200-foot-tall nets. Ben Enticknap, campaign manager and senior scientist with the nonprofit group Oceana, notes the council also committed to putting inspectors or cameras on all gillnet boats by 2018.

“This is a really big deal,” says Enticknap. “They’re finally stepping up to say that’s not going to be allowed anymore and, if the fishery does catch these species, they’re going to shut them down.” Oceana estimates 885 marine mammals have died in gillnets over the past 10 years, trapped with the nets cutting into them, and drowned when they can’t surface for air. The recommendations must still be approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service, which is expected to implement new regulations before next summer’s fishing season. Conservationists would like to see the 20 or so California

swordfishing crews operating from San Diego to Monterey switch to less-damaging methods to nearby sea life. Enticknap says those include harpoons and deep-set buoy gear. “It’s more work to selectively target these swordfish, rather than just setting out a milelong net and then just throwing everything over and keeping the swordfish,” says Enticknap. “But it has to happen to protect our ocean wildlife and have a local, clean, sustainable fishery.” Swordfishing drift gillnets are already illegal in Oregon, Washington, parts of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and even Russia. Chicken Farm Loses Contract After Abuse Uncovered By Desert Star Staff DUKEDOM, Tenn. – A Tennessee chicken farm has lost its contract to provide chickens for McDonald’s through Tyson Foods, after the chicken supplier announced it was terminating its contract with the farmer. Late last week, the animal rights group Mercy for Animals released the results of an undercover investigation which it says documented the abuse of chickens at T & S Farm in Dukedom – located in western Tennessee along the Kentucky border. Matt Rice, a Mercy for Animals spokesperson, describes horrific conditions. “At this Tyson contract farm, chickens were treated like mere meat producing machines,” he says. “From the day that they hatched, until they’re violently killed, their short lives are filled with misery and depravation.” There was no answer at T & S Farm for comment on this story. The video shot by the investigator, who was hired as an employee, shows birds being

The Weakley County Sheriff’s Office said it has opened an investigation into the farm. Rice says Mercy for Animals has conducted more than 40 investigations at factory farms

across the U.S. Each time, as in this case, farms are chosen at random. “Every single time, we’ve documented animal abuse,” he says. “Which leads us to believe that animal abuse runs rampant in the factory farming industry, and we need more laws and stronger oversight from these companies that buy from these

A winning production by Groves Cabin Theatre

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic One of the Coachella Valley’s most honored theatres, The Groves Cabin Theatre of Morongo Valley, launched their 2015/2016 Season with the Pulitzer Prizewinning heartwarming comedy “Driving Miss Daisy” written by multiple Tony and Academy Award winner Alfred Uhry. Tenderly directed by awardwinning director Rebecca Havely, “Driving Miss Daisy” addresses issues that cross lines of class and race in a warmhearted, humorous, affecting manner back in the 20th century. The story set in 1948 Atlanta, Georgia chronicles the unlikely relationship between a grumpy, white, Southern, Jewish lady Daisy Werthan (Joy Groves) and Hoke Colburn (Horace Miller) a

DESERT HOT SPRINGS

black chauffeur hired by Daisy’s son Boolie (Dave Jessup) to drive her whenever she needs to go out and about in Atlanta. The prickly and independent 72 year-old widow is reluctant to accept the fact that she needs Hoke, a dignified and goodnatured unemployed black man to assist her. Boolie, counsels Hoke that although his mother is crotchety, and strong-minded, he shouldn’t have a problem if he is patient and gentle, but firm with her, as she is used to getting her own way. Over the twenty-five year span of the story -1948 to 1998 Jim Crow Laws (1890 – 1965) of the south dictated southern social behavior. Hollywood screen writers and theatre playwrights have been at the forefront of producing art that shines a light

on these issues. Recent movies like “The Help” brought into sharp focus the immorality and folly of a ‘separate but equal’ America. In Uhry’s ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ story, director Havely nicely captures the nuances of a changing America when it comes to race and humanity. Havely orchestrates the performances of Daisy and Hoke where the two characters continue to grow closer in their friendship over the years to the point that one might almost say they could be considered ‘a couple’. Dave Jessup offers nice support as Boolie, Daisy’s son. But the real standouts are Horace Miller as Hoke and Joy Groves as Miss Daisy. Miller could benefit more if he keeps the pacing going between his lines. Hoke is a warm and winning character September 23, 2015

as created by Uhry and as seen through Havely’s lens, but everyone has to be onboard the same vehicle when it comes to the narrative and timing. Let’s just chalk it up to opening night jitters the night I attended when it comes to the pacing. Which brings us to Miss Daisy herself. Joy Groves is an absolute delight and gives one of the most memorable performances of her long and distinguished career in the Coachella Valley and hi-desert. And that is saying something. She is one of the Desert Theatre League’s (DTL) most honored performers. She literally becomes Miss Daisy. We see all of the tics, idiosyncrasies, crankiness, as well as, her good qualities and intentions that basically all good people possess. The final mesmerizing scene between Daisy and Hoke, when she is 97, is a sublime theatrical moment. If you don’t feel the palpable emotion from the audience, well you better check yourself into a hospital because your heart must have stopped beating some time ago. Tickets to this stellar production will be hard to obtain. With just 22 seats reservations are a must. Call the box office at 76-365-4523. ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ will perform on Saturdays at 7 pm and on Sundays at 2:30 pm. There will be no performance on Saturday October 17th. There will, however, be three Friday performances: Friday, Sept. 25th, Friday, October 2nd and Friday, October 9th. All Friday performances are at 7 pm.

Marijuana-related deaths, suspensions & problems spike in Colorado

By Desert Star Staff A new study of marijuana drug use in Colorado found increases in marijuana-related traffic deaths, hospital visits, school suspensions, lab explosions, and pet poisonings. A federal government program conducted the study. The 166-page report released this month analyzed the effects of legalizing marijuana for medical and recreational use in Colorado spanning the time period from 2006 to the present. Along with the state of Washington, Colorado is considered as something of laboratory in which the effects of legalizing marijuana use can be studied. The study showed that the number of drivers testing positive for marijuana increased 100 percent from 2007 to 2012, with marijuana-related fatalities doubling from 37 to 78. Traffic fatalities total around 500 a year in the state. One of the reports key findings was that the number of children aged zero to five exposed to marijuana increased 268 percent when comparing the period from 2006 to 2009 to the period from 2010 to 2013: triple the national average. The report showed that more young people aged 12

to 17 were using marijuana as well. When asked during a national survey in 2012 whether they had used marijuana in the past month, 10.47 percent of Colorado’s youth said they had, which was 39 percent higher than the national average. “I never dreamed in a million years that this would happen to my son,” Kendal, a parent who didn’t want to use his last name, told CBS, referring to a time when he came home to find his 13-year-old son unconscious from what he says was a marijuana overdose. “He was gray. His heart wasn’t beating and he wasn’t breathing,” Kendal said. Kendal used CPR to resuscitate him, and later talked to his son’s high school peer and supplier. Marijuana-related emergency room visits grew 57 percent in two years, from 8,198 in 2011 to 12,888 in 2013, the study found, with a 29 percent increase in emergency room visits for teens. The report also found that drug-related suspensions and expulsions increased 32 percent between the 2008-2009 and 2012-2013 school years. The majority of expulsions were for marijuana violations. From 2006 to 2008, there were 1,000 to 4,800 medical

marijuana cardholders and no known dispensaries in Colorado. As of the end of 2012, there were 108,000 cardholders and 532 licensed dispensaries. In November 2012, voters passed an amendment allowing anyone over the age of 21 to use marijuana recreationally. Other findings included data showing that seizures of Colorado pot being shipped out of state soared in 2014. Pot seizures increased 397 percent between 2008 and 2013. The average number of pounds seized increased 35.5

percent from 2005 to 2008 when compared to the time period from 2009 to 2013. US Mail parcels were intercepted being shipped to 33 states, representing an increase of 1,280 percent. Increased distribution of and access to marijuana has also led to increases in crime, lab explosions, and poisonings, according to the study. The number of pets poisoned from ingesting marijuana increased fourfold in six years, with a total of 153 cases reported from 2006 -2012. The report also found that the

estimated annual revenue from the sale of recreational marijuana varies from $65 million to $118 million. Interestingly, the majority of counties and cities in Colorado have banned recreational marijuana businesses despite the drug being legal. The federal government’s Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, a program that assists federal, state and local and tribal law enforcement in critical drug-trafficking regions carried out the report.

Numerous users are currently complaining on social media that they are not able to sign in. “We’re a bit overloaded right now...Please try again later, or download Skype to use it anytime,” Skype wrote on its website. “Affected users will not be able to change their status, their contacts will all show as

offline and they will be unable to start Skype calls to them.” However, they added that instant messages “are still being delivered as usual. The status issue also doesn’t affect Skype for Web, which can be used to make calls and send instant messages.” Skype was created back in 2003 and has since gathered more than 660 million users worldwide (as of 2010).
