It seems our desert communities can’t get enough of music. We’ve all been waiting for is the last big gig of the season. The 10th annual Joshua Tree Music Festival (JTMF) is happening May 18-20 in scenic Joshua Tree - just thrity minutes from Palm Springs. There is a lot going on there to please diverse tastes at this illustrious yet funky event. This weekend it’s merging their desert town style with an internationally acclaimed lineup of dance music all stars. It’s kinda like an alien space ship selected gifted musical artists from all over the planet, scooped ‘em up and dropped them into the desert for our selfish pleasure. The three-day festival unites the overwhelming spirit of desert freedom with powerful music from around the world to create a lighthearted oasis in a gypsy caravan atmosphere. It’s not as dirty and nowhere as desperate as Burning Man but as funky as can be imagined with the magical appearance of two stages alternating in hosting talented troubadors, gifted string pluckers and enthusiastic drum bangers playing to appreciative fans. Besides, it’s cool, right next to an oasis lake smack dab in the middle of a lonely and sandy desert landscape. This trippy scene features magnificent art installations, a kidsville at lakeside, the heavily shaded music bowl, a full spectrum of yoga classes and a global market to further inspire, intrigue and invite festival goers. Buzz with your new favorite band and dozens of new friends in the shadows of the otherworldly Joshua Tree National Park. This yearʼs line up of dance-inducing artists includes the heavy hitting masters of funky electronic breaks and beats Fort Knox Five, intoxicating African artists Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Khaira Arby, Wunmi & MC Rai; international bass man party starter extraordinaire Gaudi, the crunchy power trio groove of the London Souls , the progressive cumbia of Cumbia Tokeson, the global latino street funk of Sarazino, and See-I (fea. members of the Thievery Corporation) and more. Last year’s JTMF triumph of Gaudi set the bar super-duper high on the entertainment scale. This not to be missed international man is an amazing conductor who succeeds in pleasing both the ears and eyes – its enough to easily imagine this musician on a millionaire’s yaught in Monaco harbor or some dance your ass off afterhours club on Ibiza. He’s flying in for just three select west
coast gigs, then he heads back to Europe. Other acts succeed in offering a wide range of styles – enough to please most everyone. Full line-up, schedule, and festival info at http://www.joshuatreemusicfestival.com/. Overnight camping is just $15 - which is especially fine. It’s cooler up in the high desert so come prepared for a possible evening chill. As always... drinking water is free. Obviouisly the music and dancing will give you an appetitie and some fine food vendors will be there to delight your culinary tastes. About the Joshua Tree Music Festival Founded in 2002 by music enthusiast Barnett English and run on corporate-free, community-centric power, JTMF captures the DIY funkiness of Californiaʼs desert towns, turning rusty junk into striking art, old trailers into stages, and a shaded stretch of campground near the infamous national park into a serious dance party. Focusing on up-and-coming artists, the Festival has a penchant for picking about tobreak names, from Deer Tick to Trombone Shorty, Edward Sharpe to Brett Dennen, the Avett Brothers toToubab Krewe sprinkled among diverse music legends such as Robbie Krieger (Doors), Thomas Mapfumo,Bernie Worrell (P-Funk, Talking Heads) and Eric
Burdon (Animals). JTMF is produced by a family of friends and funsters convinced that music is the soul of life, and that art enriches and saves lives. The festival is constructed around one Music Bowl, flanked by two alternating stages. “Itʼs the combination of the setting, the music, and the people that leads to epiphany moments,” explains English. By design “weʼve created space so that people spend more time together, and you donʼt miss any bands.” There is no noise bleed, no white tents, and no yellowjacketed security details. Instead, thereʼs instant community and nonstop interaction, as people congregate under billowing shade cloth, moving from stage to stage and catching delicious musical moments. This is an intimate affair splashed with “conversation stopping” golden sunsets over distant rugged mountains and all-night desert walkabouts. Kids are free and dogs not invited. Don’t hesitate. The desert is freedom, music is power, and community is crucial. Tap into this magical trifecta and get your JTMF tickets now! http://www. joshuatreemusicfestival.com/tickets.html or just drive on up to the oasis to escape the heat and embrace the love.

The Right Guy Charles Bennett Jr is one of the more interesting people I’ve met in a long time. His history includes twelve years in the Marine Corps as a Military Police Officer periodically attached to the secret service detail assisting in the arrival and departures of US Presidents and Vice Presidents, transporting and ensuring the safety of celebrities and working with foreign dignitaries. As the father of two children, Bennett knows the value of family and safety. He lights up when discussing his family and inform me that his wife, who is a nurse, and children’s safety are of utmost importance. “I would do anything to protect them,” he says with determination in his eyes. I feel a little sorry for anyone who might try to break into his home. Charles Bennett, Jr is a leading expert in a growing market of security consultation. He tells me about his short time as a head of security for a club in Indio. “We were the only club never to get a citation when I was running security.” Bennett said, unfortunately a new manager was hired for the the club. Charles pulled his men out for safety reasons. “If you can’t do it the right way, why bother?” This is the problem many security companies are going through, doing it the right way. “Most of the security guards are some kid who’s never really been trained and getting paid minimum wage to stand around. If anything should happen, they don’t even have the authority to use force or get involved. They have to call 911. Usually by the time the police get there, the perpetrator has had the chance to get away and possibly cause harm.” This is were Bennett’s services can be useful. He is for hire to come to your place of business and tell you what kind of security works best for your individual environment.

had complete control, they reluctantly put a store there. They soon found out that that store became the highest profit location in the region. Additionally, having officers that are properly trained, certified, and competent in CPR/ECC is of great value, as we’ve had a number of incidents requiring the need for it.”
of customers. Additionally, it can also affect what companies want to put their stores there (due to lack of customers because of theft and safety.) Said Bennett. “For example, I worked part time at the Montebello Town Center back in the late 90’s while stationed in Orange County, Said Bennett, Disney had an interest in putting a store there but was afraid of the security risk. Once they realized that our public safety department
In addition to placing security in your business, making sure you are aware of situations is a huge benefit for you and your customers. Preventive measures can go along way if they are utilized correctly. “Often times people wont make changes in security until it is too late, Bennett said. Take 9/11, for example. Our airport security was privatized and complacent because there had been no serious incidents. You know what happened. Further, the TSA has a history of not implementing new security plans and policies until they have incidents. In my opinion, from experience, most security plans are developed using industry guidelines versus experience and imagination (the process of “what if”). Most security is run by inexperienced mangers that do not understand process and procedures that are needed and in the end cause more risk than safety. ” Bennett opened our eyes to the dangers around us and how we can protect ourselves by simple precautions we can implement. Readers can contact Bennett to find out more information about what they can do to protect their business and selves. www.themoneegroup.com or call (760) 342-2977 for a consultation.

Palm Desert, CA - On May 10th and 11th, there was an exciting movement for local church the Living Word in the Desert. The dynamic and inspiring pastor Jesse Sanchez was in attendance at the JW Marriott. All in attendance were buzzing with anticipation as pastors from congregations of Living Words throughout the southwest united to STAND (the title of the powerfully packed conference hosted by Sanchez). The conference was geared at establishing the vision behind the Living Word with spiritual concepts dealing with positive change to mend lives of those in need. Pastor Edgy Gallegos from Living Word Riverside, touched on topics ranging from spiritual rebellion to marriage and restoration. “The hardest part of restoring your life in God is stripping away the hurts of our past,” Pastor Ruben said. Having a difficult upbringing, Sanchez Says he was inspired by God to make a difference in peoples lives through delivering a unique form of pastoring to capture the attention of other spiritual leaders, as well as public officials. Living Word in the Desert continues to flourish under his leadership, with a worship team, and a men’s home. Hearts are being touched and families restored thanks to Gallegos and his church. The future is indeed very bright for Sanchez, as he is careful to credit Jesus for the dramatic transformation that saved him and is still enabling him to help others. Garden Guru Corner Many times we have our clients ask us to help them select palm trees for their yard in what we classify as our tropical desert. There are a number of questions that need to be answered before selecting the correct palm for the location. Palms create a perfect vertical statement and overhead canopy that adds to every desert landscape. And, as discussed in my last article, hot months are a great time to plant and transplant cacti and palms.
STURDY PALMS FOR STREET TREES AND VERTICAL EFFECTS
Washingtonia palms are fast-growing and reach heights that are too tall for most suburban gardens, but work well on large properties and as street trees. There are two Washingtonia species to choose from, and you can also find a hybrid version of them as well. They will often self-hybridize if they are planted near one another: Filifera – California Fan Palm Originating in California and Arizona, these palms will reach approximately 60 feet in height, and are about 20 feet in diameter – earning them the nickname “Fat Freddy.” Their fronds are long-stalked and light green, and stand well apart in the crown. As leaves mature, they bend down to form a “skirt” thatch. Robusta – Mexican Fan Palm As the name suggests, these palms originated in Mexico. They will reach 100 feet tall and approximately 10 feet in
diameter. The trunk may become slightly curved or bent. The head of bright green foliage is more compact than the filifera. Date palms – Phoenix genus: Phoenix canariensis – Canary Island Date Palm These are large, heavy-trunked plants to 60 feet tall. The trunk is patterned in unique nearly diamond shapes. The gracefully arching fronds form a crown that can grow to 50 feet wide. As with all phoenix varieties of palms there is a quarantine prohibiting the transport of plants and plant parts into Riverside County because of a date palm disease that would threaten our agricul tural farming. There fore, this genus must be grown in the area, causing a supply and demand situation that has driven prices up on these types of palms. Phoenix dactylifera – Date Palm These are the classic palm of desert oases. Reaching 80 feet tall with a slender trunk, the crown will grow to 20 – 40 feet wide. These are the trees that bear the fruit of our agricultural commerce here in the desert; the ‘Deglet Noor’ being the principal variety. As with the phoenix canariensis, these must be propagated locally.
SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED PALMS
Butia capitata – Pindo Palm Considered one of the hardiest palms, it is a slow-growing palm that will reach 10 to 20 feet in height, with feathery gray-green crown that will spread to 10 to 15 feet wide. The trunk is heavy and patterned with the stubs of old fronds. In the summer, it will produce long spikes of small yellow flowers that are followed by clusters of edible fruit. Chamaerops humulis – Mediterranean Fan Palm Similar in hardiness to the pindo palm the Mediterranean fan palm hails from the western Mediterranean. Tolerating poor soil and strong winds, this is a great desert choice. The palm grows in clumps and will reach a height of 20 feet, and may also reach 20 feet in width. The striking green leaves are on spiny leaf stalks, and the Blue Mediterranean fan palm (chamaerops humulis cerifera) has unique, silvery blue foliage. PHOENIX ROEBELLINI – PIGMY DATE PALM
herbaculture
ATRIX
property management
By Chris Hermann. RLA Is happiest here in partial shade or indoors. Can be single trunk or multi-trunk, and is slow growing to a maximum height of ten feet. The leaf structure is finely textured and curving, creating a very soft look in the landscape. As with the other phoenix species, this palm is becoming increasingly difficult to find for a reasonable price. Beucarnia recurvata – Pony Tail Palm or Elephant’s Foot Also known as nolina recurvata, these plants are not truly palms as their common name suggests. Slow growing with a swollen base that looks like a big onion or an elephant’s foot, single trunks or multi trunks will reach 12 to 15 feet tall (or possibly taller when very old), and nine to 12 feet wide. Clusters of bright green leaves arch and droop at the end of the branches. Does well here in partial sun (though we have seen it adapt to full sun, we prefer it to be somewhat protected in the summer) or indoors (watch over-watering). I only have a little more space to talk about syagrus romanzoffianum or queen palms. Their use here in the desert has become popular because they are not only attractive, but generally inexpensive. However, the queen palms often do not do well here because of soil conditions. If not fertilized regularly and properly, they will yellow and slowly die. Queen palms should not be planted in windy areas because their fronds will break. See you next week! chris@aunteffiesgardens.com

secrets of living longer
More Ways to Increase Your Healthy Years of Life This week I would like to continue sharing with you some of the insights about increasing your longevity contained in a recent, valuable book by Dr. Trisha Macnair,M.D. titled The Long Life Equation: 100 Factors That Can Add Or Subtract Years From Your Life. We examined ten of these factors in last week’s column and here are ten more. 14: EXERCISE (Plus 2 Years). As proof of this, Dr. Macnair cites the Harvard Alumni Study of more than 71,000 men who graduated from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania between 1916 and 1954. This study found that those men who regularly burned 2,000 calories a week while exercising lived, on average, two years longer than those who chose to live a less active life. 15: CLUTTER (Minus 1 Year?) “Creative clutter is one thing but most people feel oppressed, stressed and depressed when they are surrounded by chaos…Whether the mess is a jumble of material possessions, a
module of outstanding debts or the turmoil of a tumultuous relationship, clutter can cause the pulse rate and blood pressure to simmer higher that is healthy…” 17: PETS (Plus 2 Years). “All you need is love, and even the love of a tarantula or a goldfish might do…People with pets visit their doctors less and are less likely to suffer from depression.” Dr. Macnair cites a 2002 New York study which reported that people who owned a dog and suffered a heart attack, were six times more likely to be alive one year later than those who didn’t have a pet. 18: DEPRESSION (Minus 5 Years). “Major depression is a serious medical condition. If you have a persistent low mood which disrupts sleep, interferes with your ability to get on with normal daily activities at home and at work, or leaves you feeling desperate about the future, get professional advice to sort it out.” 19: MEDITATION (Plus 3 Years). “…How meditation helps you to live longer isn’t clear

but is probably related to a reduction in stress and its harmful effects…Meditation can lift mood, dispel anxiety and be used to banish negative thoughts and pessimism. People who meditate regularly also say that it helps them focus and concentrate, improving their performance at work and bringing harmony to their relationships.” 21: LONG LIVING PARENTS (Plus 10 Years). Dr. Macnair cites the Framingham Heart Study which found that “individuals with long-lived parents had more advantageous cardiovascular risk profiles in middle age compared with those whose parents died younger. They were less likely to smoke or have high blood pressure, and had lower blood cholesterol levels…” 24: GIRLS RULE (Plus 10 Years). “In all developed countries and most underdeveloped ones, women outlive men, usually be about 10 percent of the average life span. In the USA and northern Europe, women are six times more likely than men to live to 100…One possible biological factor is the influence of sex hormones. The male hormone testosterone has been associated with increased aggressive and competitive behavior, leading to risks of an early death, due to violence, accidents and risk-taking…” 25: STAY SHORT (Plus 5 Years). “In the 1970s, data gathered from athletes and famous people in the USA showed that shorter, lighter men lived longer than their taller, heavier counterparts…In 1992 the World Health Organization published a report showing that normal male American citizens less than 5 feet 9 inches tall lived nearly five years longer than those over this height… There was no reliable explanation…” 26: OBESITY (Minus 3 Years). “… Countless studies have proven the link between weight and mortality. More acute levels of obesity introduce greater risks of
suffering a heart attack or stroke, developing cancer or diabetes, or being afflicted with joint disease…The key to weight control is healthy eating and regular exercise – it’s that simple. You should take steps such as measuring your weight once a week so you can’t kid yourself…Talk to your doctor about medical treatment for weight loss.” 27: BEING UNDERWEIGHT (Minus 1 Year). “Being too thin isn’t healthy either…In fact, according to the Institute of Preventative Medicine in Copenhagen, curvy is best. Their studies found that women with wide hips were 87 percent less likely to die from heart disease than slim hipped women…” We shall continue our review of “The Long Life Equation” in next week’s edition of this newspaper. The Gravy Train of Mech (Mick) and Slick
pets
By paige turner
I am the lucky (well kind of) “caretaker” (Mother) of two male dogs. Both are rescue dogs that in-turn rescued me! I’ll start with the 85-pound baby who is now about 1½ years young now. He’s a Lab/pit mix in a silver lavender color. Just gorgeous, if I may say so myself. I started to name him the “Silver Bullet” but did not think it would sound so good to the neighbors as I called out BULLLLETTTT. Especially in DHS! So staying with the bull theme and having ties with the Hawaiian Islands, he ended up with the name of “BuLaia” which translates to B.S. Liar. So, he is called Bulla. But as time passes, yet another name is appropriate for him. Now he is a gray bull-shark named “Slick.” He’s always hungry and trolling the environment to see what he can eat. He also is following Hawaiian culture as he enjoyed eating a friend’s pot crop of 4 small plants and went to sleep. Sweet dreams... A few birds have met their fate in the fenced yard and I’m afraid also a stray cat that was foolish enough to cross into his my guys territory. Survival of the fittest they say. After finding Bulla in a local parking lot being chased out of store and no one around,
I loaded my groceries, opened the back door, called him and he jumped in. For two weeks I posted notices that he was found. No one answered so he became my charge. Fun for the most part but strong body and mind to try and control! He was lonely, as dogs want to be in a pack. So arrives rescue number two, Mick short for Mechanic, as he Loved to sleep in the toolbox as a pup. His owner was moving and needed a home for him quickly. Mick is about 2 yrs. old and black with some white details. He is a Chow/pit mix weighing in at 55 pounds and the most awesome golden orange Chinese eyes one might ever see. Mick is a mellow big brother with manners and patience. (Bulla’s not catching on). All was well for a couple of months, until Bulla grew into his gonads and wanted to be alpha dog. He was very protective of me and became jealous easily. The fights began. They got worse. Battle scars were forming and wall boards were breaking and there was no stopping them until they tired themselves out. Numerous broken broom handles to no avail. Because Bulla was being the bully, he was
the first to meet his Vet (and his fate) in July. He took it well but seemed to be depressed for a while as he licked his empty parts. But he got over it and is mellower, yet he still thinks about starting a fight sometimes but
backs down to big brother now and it is over quickly. The boys are great watchdogs that look intimidating. But they have never bitten anyone but each other. And a stray cat or two.

Shakti Fest Highlights Shakti Fest, Spring OMmersion, 2012: Why We Went We made the wonderful choice by being there, while just “being” (present in the moment). We came together in a more intimate gathering with other souls, to express our love for song, movement, service, prayer, meditation, play and the path of devotion, Bhakti. Most of us took the opportunity to leave the outside world behind, at least for a few days. By choice, we all are peace, love, compassion joy and Seva (selfless service). People laughed, relaxed, stretched, they went “within”. We sweated, we sang, we played, sunbathed, moon bathed, people opened their hearts, they meditated, danced, rested, walked, clapped and yes, they took in all of this Divine Energy. We entered a sacred place (including the Joshua Tree Retreat Center) to celebrate Spring with old and new friends. What It Is So we journeyed a second time to participate at the 2nd annual Shakti Fest in Joshua Tree. Shakti Fest is a festival which celebrates the devotional path that has its roots in Yoga, Kirtan, and meditation. It embraces ancient and modern sacred wisdom
and traditional and non-traditional spiritual practices. The festival is a vehicle for evolution of human consciousness through a heart-centered revolution. Shakti Fest builds a community of people drawn to follow the path of the heart – a devotional, prayerful, loving, healthful, respectful family. All the artists, presenters, and vendors embody, practice, and share the spirit of Bhakti through a variety of ways, including: continuous Kirtan music, yoga classes, meditation and prayer, teachings and workshops, ecofriendly, holistic market place, vegetarian, vegan and raw vegan cuisine, a wellness sanctuary: massage, bodywork, energy-work, intuitive readings and other unique wellness enhancing modalities. What We Observed While on retreat, people embraced the “festival family” – an expanding, vibrant international community. They practiced mindfulness; they were patient, mostly respectful and gracious to their fellow beings and to the sacred land. They used electricity and water minimally, using the trash and recycling bins that were provided,
not wasting much water or food. We drank plenty of water, from the 3000-gallon water shrine that provided reverse osmosis water. They camped on the campground, or stayed in the various housing, both provided by the JTR Ctr. There was plentiful “In the Bhav” attire: colorful, flowing festival clothing, hats, Mala beads, yoga mats and respectful nods. The Presenters, The Producers and The Desert Dwellers In addition to the 22 yoga classes and the 28 workshops were also pre-festival and postfestival intensive presentations that were also a part of this years’ overall Shakti Fest. Yoga therapist, teacher and owner of Dancing Shiva Yoga & Ayurveda, Mas Vidal presented a traditional approach to women’s wellness focusing on prevention, detoxification and restoration. - Local Palm Springs resident, and eclectic yoga teacher, Kristin Olsen’s class had nearly 50 people in attendance. Like most of the live- music driven yoga classes, her class was infused by the participatory sounds of Masood Ali Khan, Prajna Viera, Cooper Madison and Marti Walker. Assisting
By Ren Yogamaya, E- RYT 500 Kristin was Phillip Bibb, a new Yogi to the desert. Bibb, originally trained in Iyengar yoga, now teaches three days per week at Urban Yoga, in Palm Springs. “I now teach, the practice: First, the physical practice (of yoga) and also off the mat, how we breath can connect one to higher spirit. We need to continually practice all of the steps. I feel blessed to be teaching at Urban Yoga, a beautiful space,”said Bibb. Durga Dass, aka David Newman with his wife, Mira traveled from the East Coast to present his blend of Kirtan music and workshop, a special presentation on Bhakti Yoga: The Way of Love. “Shakti Fest is to trust our feelings. Mother (divine feminine energy) speaks to us from what we feel. It is an inherent simplicity of love and truth. We can put a lot of complexity in arriving to it while we are already it. We are at a time where we are already ripe.” said Newman. Palm Desert dweller, shaman and founder of the Desert Holistic Network, Renee Continued on Page 23

Mother’s Day As a young chef, let me start again. As an invincible, cocky, egotistical, maniacal, smart ass, punk “cook” coming through the ranks Mother’s Day was always the one day where enemies and rivals in the kitchen unite. Sautee will help the grill, executive chefs regain their main status, and rookies either make it or go home with a doggie bag and an apology letter to their moms. The letter always reads the same: “Dear Mom, I know you wanted me to be on Top Chef, and I know how many letters you wrote to the Food Network, and how much money you wasted on Culinary School. The problem is
ma, I can’t hang. These guys are mean and I do not like being called names. Besides, who are all of these people who want to eat every day, all the time. I will live in your basement forever, I promise.” Yeah, harsh but it is reality. Moms and women in general have this amazing force that only they possess, understand and execute. Traveling in groups, all over the world, in a city near you. thousands of mom’s will eat and drink what and where they want on one day of the year. It’s a given. To give you an idea, I worked at a place called Top of the Hub in Boston. It was on the
Hot Weather Fun With Fido! By Brenda Martin of BBZ PET CARE Pet Necessities: Hot Weather Fun With Fido! By Brenda Martin of BBZ PET CARE The hot weather season is upon us in the desert which can bring animal lovers to worry about their furry kids. Their exercise and eating habits need to change just like it does for us humans. Fido or Fluffy may not eat as much nor do they need to be fed as much. Don’t let them get fat due to the heat! Here are a few tips for the next few months to help out your little one’s: There are toys out there to keep them busy such as Goody-ships, Kibble Nibble and the IQ Ball. Just fill said toy with treats so they have to manipulate it to get to the prize. After they are finished just clean and refill. You can also fill your ice tray with water and treats, then freeze them for your pet. When they are bored or it is too hot outside, give your dog the ice cubes and watch them lick their way to coolness and happiness. No matter what season we are in most dogs need to exercise at least two times per day. Remember an un-exercised dog is a trouble maker! You may have to get up a bit earlier than usual or stay up later in the evening to walk them during the heat. Also, please be very cautious of the hot
concrete that retains the heat. Try putting your feet or palm of your hand on the pavement and hold for three seconds. That’s what they will feel on their paws when you take them out. Remember dogs can’t say, “Ouch my feet are burning!”
52nd floor of the second tallest building in Beantown. From 10a.m. to 6 p.m. we would serve an average of 3,200 covers. These are fine dining people, I’m not talking about a steam table with mushy peas and watered down mash and stale prime rib. We lost a lot of good men there. We were happy to see others fall and curl into the same fetal position they knew for just 9 short months... Wicked Pissah Maaah! The relatively smaller market of the high and low deserts that may seem like there isn’t a lot of People here. Right, think again. I made my way as gluttonous and entitled son through the casino buffet at Spa Resort and Casino in Palm Springs. Again, the force of momma has Struck. The Hotel Lobby was packed with roses, wine, women and kneeling, hunched over and passed out husbands, brothers and sons. We all were shaking our heads even more than usual like a third base coach giving the steal sign to a guy with his shoe laces tied together, we all thought what a great idea but what the heck were we really thinking. Like zombies we groaned and staggered towards the buffet. Alas, there was something for everyone. We had prime rib, horseradish, au gratin potatoes, vegetables and au jus. We had the noodle-bar wokking and rolling with customized lo and chow mein, Mongolian stir fry and laughter from the beautiful mom smiles du jour, as a nervously excited reaction to all that was going on. All the senses, all the people, all the memories of my salty mom days in the kitchen, and all the respect to those fighting or falling this mothers day. Chef Paul Woods has manned Casino kitchens for several years always changing with trends and trying new concepts with the transition and progression of demographic in the valley. prawns into my overly embarrassing, semiconscious gullet. It didn’t matter because mom’s were calling the shots and men were doing as they wished even against their better judgment or usual pessimistic point of view. Nice work Spa Casino… To all the mamas, Happy Muthas Day, kid. ******Important Correction***** Last week in my Brew in the Zoo ramblings I made a VERY large and absolutely honest mistake. I stated that my sliders had veal in them. Now, to make sure I am not called out…. we will, on higher ticket or by request from our clients add veal to our Kobe or Wagyu beef grind for our sliders. However, I am very sensitive and intellectually aware of my environment and venues at all times. We at East Meets West Catering did not have any trace of animal aside from full grown, organically and humanely raised cattle along with organic and from scratch ingredients in our offerings. I also must point out, The Living Desert in no way, shape or form ever approved, had knowledge or even was eluded to the possibility of such. We apologize to The Living Desert, PETA, The Humane Society of America and all those who are sensitive to this. As an example of my stance, I have turned down at least 30 paying Jobs for thousands of dollars because I refuse to buy, cook, or fabricate Chilean sea bass or any related species. I have a zoo of animals at my home and I would never offend my best friends. Thank you for your understanding.

Oil ChangeSpecial Remember to leave your pets at home and not in the car if the temperature rises above normal because it will kill your pet! Instead leave them at home in the air condition with lots of water! Another thing is to take your dog swimming. If you don’t own a pool get a baby blow-up pool and watch them wade and splash around. This can be fun for the both of you. Please keep Fido active and cool for the summer!

Film Noir Is A Big Hit Photos and story By Pat Krause Palm Springs, CA – Last weekend, May 10 – 13, the Palm Springs Cultural Center presented their 12th Annual Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival at the Camelot Theater. Producer Alan K. Rode and host Marvin Paige were in high spirits as Ric and Rozene Supple, owners of the Camelot Theater presented the films. The festival continues to grow each year and many of the films that were being shown this Year are no longer available for public viewing. Most of them have recently been restored and still others are one of a kind. Film historians are trying to preserve these films because many of them from that era have deteriorated and were not kept safe for the digital age in which we now live. These films are part of our American heritage and need to be preserved for future generations. The opening night film, Cry Danger, from 1951 had a guest appearance by actor Richard Erdman. After the film he held a Q&A and told stories of his career then answered questions from the audience. Alan
K. Rose and Eddie Muller hosted the Q&As with guests celebrities Pat Crowley, Kathleen Hughes, Peter Ford and David Ladd. Some of the films included in this years festival were, The Prowler, Hell’s Island, The Face Behind the Mask, I Love Trouble and Slaughter On Tenth Avenue. Local actor and singer Jerome Elliott will debut his latest cabaret one man show - Sweet Nerd Of Youth, his sixth show in the last four years, as part of the Sundays In Summer Series presented by Les Michaels’ Life Is A Cabaret. Jerome, who is a four-time Desert Theater League nominee, came up with Sweet Nerd Of Youth in March during his birthday weekend while performing in Seattle. As the self-confessed ‘nerd’ reminisced about his childhood growing up on the East Coast he began thinking of songs that expressed how he experienced his friends, family, and inner nerd during those formative years. With an eclectic mix of composers and lyricists including Burt Bacharach, Hal David, Stephen Sondheim, Duke Ellington, William Finn, Jule Styne, and Comden and Green, it’s a fun journey that many in the audience are sure to relate to on multiple levels. Joining Jerome will be his longtime music director Charlie Creasy whose many credits include a stint as music director for the legendary chanteuse Hildegarde as well as numerous productions in the desert. The Arthur Newman Theatre at the Joslyn Center is located at 73-750 Catalina Way in Palm Desert, Tickets for the show are $10 cash only at the door and reservations may be made Sweet Nerd Of Youth at 760-325-2731. Show time is 2 p.m.with box The play will premiere at Joslyn Center’s office open at 1 p.m. Arthur Newman Theatre on May 27th in Palm Desert. Street Fair and Car Show The Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce Street Fair and Car Show will be held on Saturday June 2, from 4 p.m. to-9 p.m. The Street Fair and Car Show will be moved back to the Twentynine Palms Highway in downtown Twentynine Palms. celebration of museums. A comprehensive list of participating museums is available at www. aamd.org/newsroom. This year, the worldwide museum community will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of this event with more than 30,000 museums in approximately 100 countries an “Art and Message Wall” will be installed at the Palm Springs Art Museum in the center of the museum’s atrium. Visitors will be encouraged to leave their message to the museum on the wall in written or artistic form. The messages may be words or images and will focus on the reasons the participant visits the art museum. The idea behind the initiative is to capture audience response to art museums and to share these responses with the public; providing valuable insight on the reasons why people do, in fact, support their local art museums-and, at the same time, as a result of that feedback help the Palm Springs Art Museum to be more responsive to the needs of the community. The Palm Springs location is located on 101 North Museum Drive, Palm Springs and the Palm Desert location is located on 72-567 Highway 111, Palm Desert. For more information call 760-346-5600 for the Palm Desert location or 760-322-4800 for Palm Springs.

Whatever Happened to Your Neighborhood Grocery Store When I was a kid (circa 1950s & 1960s), I remember going to the local grocery store just down the street from my folks house. It wasn’t very big by today’s standards, maybe the width of two aisles of today’s behemoth stores, and not long enough to have been a bowling alley in a prior life. But it had everything a kid would need, including a
Safeway had its own “Floyd” who ran it with the same love and care as our own Floyd in Los Angeles. Although hardly anything in the store was the same as far as the brands, labels or logos -- the feel was the same. Where has the old neighborhood store gone? Today we rush around in a sanitized world
The quest for retail homogeneity in markets and most retailers alike has added some level of convenience to our lives, but at what price? really nice candy aisle. Apparently it had everything my mom needed too. She would shop there for all the boring stuff like meat and vegetables that she would magically turn into great meals at dinner time. It wasn’t a fancy place. Narrow aisles with boxes piled up next to the vegetable bins waiting to be unloaded. A cement floor that had a well worn look about it, and a blackishgray color that would undoubtedly trigger a Health Department violation by today’s standards. It wasn’t that brightly lit, like today’s markets and big box stores that glow like an operating room. No one cared about that sort of thing back then. What the old store had was a comfortable charm. You felt at home there, like you were living in a Norman Rockwell painting of early Americana. One of the things that made it feel so comfortable was Floyd. He did a little bit of everything there. Stocked shelves, checked out customers, cut meat, helped you find whatever you were looking for, and if they didn’t have it, Floyd would special order it for you. Floyd was a stocky man with a full almost chubby face and a big smile. You could ask Floyd anything and it was never too big an inconvenience for him to find it. In 1961, I had the opportunity to accompany my parents on a trip to Washington D.C. My mother wanted to get some groceries and incidentals for the hotel room, so we found a Safeway store. As I walked up and down the aisles, I did not recognize any of the brands. They had none of the products that good old Floyd carried. I finally found one item I’d heard of – a national brand – Borden as I recall, but it was the exception and not the rule. After a few weeks there, I became accustomed to the market, and even enjoyed seeing all the new brands and labels on the shelves. I also appreciated that the Washington

the same location, on an identical rack, and in the same package. Granted, if I’m really sick, “Just let me find my meds and get out of here.” Still, this trend has migrated to virtually every form of retailer, not just markets and drug stores. Electronics, bookstores, big box retailers like Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco and the like are all identical. The quest for retail homogeneity in markets and most retailers alike has added some level of convenience to our lives, but at what price? The Floyd’s of the world, and their ‘mom-n-pop’ stores were the victims. A few may still exist, but they are getting hard to find – a throwback to a more civil time when the personal relationship of patron to proprietor was more important than the nickel or quarter you saved on the purchase. Today, we have almost eliminated the human being. Most of us shop online. It’s fast. It’s immediate gratification. Yet, there is no Floyd to greet you. You usually have

no interaction with a real human being unless your order gets totally screwed up. And then it’s “Hello, this is Jamie in Customer Service, may I help you?” Sometimes, when I think back over my life, the most innocuous little experiences, the Floyds I have known, the search for familiar products in markets far from home, and the fascination of experiencing shops and stores and people who don’t all wear the same uniform, or been ground down to uttering a few trite expressions, who have somehow maintained their individuality, are what’s proven to be truly memorable. Thank you, Floyd. You really earned the Gold Star for service. What do you think of all the identicalemarkets these days? Write us: Editor@desertstarweekly.com and add “Floyd” in subject line.

Sun In Taurus: Most Affected is Taurus and All Earth Signs. The month is in the sign of Taurus. For Taurus: All Venusian themes such as Love, beauty, the senses and food will rule supreme until May 20. A more heightened awareness of family, growth or stubbornness, possessiveness and the pleasures in Life. The best side of Taurus is seen in their home, hospitality, gracious generosity, culinary talents and, their ability to make things grow, whether it be a penny into a dollar or a seed into a flower. The key is to know when to not to remain steadfast, to move a little quicker and to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Progress may continue at a slower pace. Stubbornness for the right or wrong reason(s) can test patience. Careful evaluation on how financial resources are spent can save money and buy more time. Fortunately, the higher conscious energy of this Sun will remind us to take it at a slower pace (at times cautious), so that we can fully enjoy the benefits of the pleasure principle. Celebrate this month by embracing the senses by learning Pratyahara (devoid of the senses). Best Sacred Geometry: Hexahedron (Earth) Best Yantra: The colors Green and Pink Mercury In Taurus Most Affected are Taurus, Gemini and Virgo. This transit began on May 9 and will continue until May 24. For Taurus: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses in your sign, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. Coupled with Jupiter also in your sign, your mind may be expanded. Try putting your focus on the spiritual, literature or videos. For Gemini: You may feel a grounding energy for the next three weeks that will help you to complete unfinished projects. This begins at first with your mind. Resolve to make it so. For Virgo: Your mental rapprochement may become more methodical and lead you to take deliberate, slower steps. This will be a very good thing for your state of mind and nervous system. The sign of Taurus may figure more prominently. For All Signs: Approaching all matters related to communications, travel and relations with Mother Earth can proceed with patience. The Challenge: Being stubborn or resisting a new or different idea may leave us stuck in one place. The Best: We can approach most matters with a constructive viewpoint that may bring a solution to a problem. Week of May 17: May 15 – Venus Turns Retrograde Most affected are Taurus, Libra and Aries. This transit will continue until June 27. For Taurus: Put important romantic or financial plans on hold from the 15th until June 27th as your ruling planet, Venus is in retrograde. Avoid negative thoughts, arguments with your partner. The Solar Eclipse on May 20th can bring positive, fiscal opportunities. For Libra: Your ruling planet is now running its’ course in the reverse and you may feel a bit more introverted. If you concluded important matters related to romance or finance before 15th, you may be more relaxed about more matters during this transit. If not, carefully consider what you can do now to make firm decisions, as long as you can avoid purchasing anything expensive. For Aries: Think twice before your words jump out, especially at your partner. The
16th could be a major power-play day as something in relation to a past relationship may surface to bring opportunity to change what you can to your benefit. For All Signs: The planet representing Love, beauty and the senses turns retrograde to help us review the relationship with others, our values; our relationship with ourselves. The Challenge: Relating with others in a harmonious manner may be difficult, especially the first 48 hours into this transit. The Best: We may be able to reconnect with some pleasures or certain people from the past to re-experience or to bring closure. May – 21 - Sun Into Gemini: Most Affected is Gemini and All Air Signs. The month is in the sign of Gemini. For Gemini: All Mercurial themes such as light, electrical impulses, mental agility, communication, will rule supreme until June 20. A more heightened awareness of the lightness of being, sound and silence. The best side of Gemini is seen in their light attitude, dealing with their emotions easily, attraction to the genuine, thoughtfulness and, their ability to learn and communicate quickly, to accept intuition, creative expression in speech, writing, also in the arts. The key is to know when to be silent, to be aware and considerate of how your changes can affect others and, to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: The divine feminine and the divine masculine energies in all people, nature, in Life, come together as one in the 5th Chakra, the throat, that also represents Gemini. With Jupiter still in Taurus, expanded consciousness and simple ideas come forth now. Celebrate this month by exercising your vocal cords, doing breath techniques, breaking into a song or by trying Tantra or Partner Yoga. Best Sacred Geometry: Oxhedron (Air) Best Yantra: The colors Light Blue or Turquoise May 20 – Solar Eclipse in Gemini Most Affected are Gemini and All Air Signs. A Solar Eclipse is a Super-New Moon. For Gemini: The Solar Eclipse on May 20 is in your sign and this Super New Moon will bring higher opportunities into your Life. With Jupiter still in Taurus, the energies, the fun, the opportunities are doubled and expanded in most areas of your Life. For All Signs: This powerful Solar Eclipse brings forth most important endings and most important beginnings. Another quantum leap is calling for each individual and all of humanity. As it always has been, it is and will always be, light is shining all around you, follow it. Learn to spin your Mer-Ka-Ba to create a higher conscious, torrodial field. Those on the planet that know about using the Mer-Ka-Ba breath may choose to begin to use it more often. Learn about what it is and how to use it. In your meditations, it is best to ask for what you need and not for what you want. Best Sacred Geometry: Octahedron (Air) Best Yantra: The colors Turquoise or Light Blue Ren Yogamaya is a Yoga teacher registered at the highest level with the Yoga Alliance, a writer, the published author of the book, EAT BY COLOR: Foods, Colors and The Chakras, a syndicated columnist and she is a natural channel for Universal Light. Shakti Fest Highlights Continued from Page 10 Baribeau gave a presentation on: After Yoga – The Dishes –“ Helping to wake people up into their awareness by taking tools learned from retreats back into their everyday lives”. Executive Director of the JTRC, Victoria Gevoian and Kevin Collins gave a rare presentation on The 8 Key Tibetan Breaths, originally introduced by Tibetan monk and spiritual teacher, Reverend Ding-Lei-Meh, founder of the Institute of Mental Physics. The workshop was very well attended with 80 people happily synchronizing in their 8 breaths. Mukti Silberfein, Co-Producer of the event professed that this was her first interview ever. She began assisting the first year of Bhakti Fest (held annually in September) by learning the registration and then found that her talents evolved into full swing as producer, covering every aspect of both events. Shakti Fest is a 3rd annual event while Bhakti Fest is in its 4th year. “They are both, each a cosmic, magical event. I can see the musical community come together, (they) connect with God; we are all a family. If everyone here could take this back home with them, we would have a world that would become a much more sweeter place,” said Mukti. Bhakti and Shakti Fest founder and
producer, Shridhar Silberfein, understood the timing of Shakti Fest. “This is an important celebration of the Divine Ma on Mother’s Day,” said Silberfein. “It is the dedication to the celebration of the divine feminine and the divine masculine coming together. Men are not in touch with their divine feminine side and this event can enhance their unconditional love. It emanates by action, what we do for one another. As an event, it is nothing like the other events in the world, devoted to Bhakti. A clean life, free of alcohol, smoke, drug all week. Come and realize that love that Bhakti are within you.”
