and liaison for the hospice. “This has been an overlooked situation, . “After our aide, Janice, asked a patient, ‘Do you have food in the house?’ and received a no answer, we decided to open another sub-division to our facility,” McDonnell added. “Janice started purchasing cases of Ensure to give to the patients.” “When someone is

discharged to their home, they often arrive at the household with no available food. We wish to reach out during this transition and provide a few days of nourishment.” A February 2009 UCLA study revealed that 50 percent of our senior citizens in Riverside County lacked sufficient income to feed themselves. “Our goal is to help provide these folks

STAROpinion Anatomy of a Snowbird Winter Visitors are Truly “Golden”

T

he dictionary definition of a snowbird is: “A northerner who moves to a warmer southern state in the winter.” Snowbirds are returning to the Coachella Valley and we are approaching our “high season” with an influx of tens of thousands of snowbirds. We have all heard Valley residents say that snowbirds come completely self-sustained in their RVs and mobile homes, but I believe that is a misconception. Contrary to this popular belief

Tom and Sally Mashak

snowbirds are not 100 percent self-sustained. They buy gasoline, food and all the necessities of everyday life. They see our dentists and doctors; they get massages and beauty treatments; they go to our spas and theaters. They spend their money here, and a lot of it. My husband Tom’s long time, childhood friend from Benton Harbor, Michigan, Tom Mashak visited us this past week with his wife, Sally, to check out the Coachella Valley. Tom worked for Whirlpool for 16 years, and Sally works for AUSCO, an off road brake manufacturing company. They both hope to retire soon. They own a home on 10 acres back in Benton Harbor and contemplate selling some of that property to relocate here for their “golden years.” The Mashak’s spent their vacation rejuvenating in our natural hot mineral waters at the Desert Hot Springs Spa Hotel and getting massages. They visited Joshua Tree National Park, Pioneertown and toured Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Whitewater, Andreas Canyon, the Marilyn Monroe statue and visited all the typical tourist attractions. They also checked into the price of homes and our state-of-the-art health care services. Herb and Pat Krause, originally from Longville, Minnesota, started coming to the Valley 20 years ago and bought a home in Thousand Palms 10 years ago. They are perfect examples of snowbirds who return to Minnesota in late spring and back to the Coachella Valley in early fall. The Krause’s both play golf almost daily and Pat attends the region’s many civic, charity and cultural events working as a photographer for our newspaper. Many snowbirds are returning to the Coachella Valley over the next few months to enjoy the 137 golf courses our region offers and the ample tennis, hiking trails and spas with natural healing waters. Snowbirds enjoy seeing

the plethora of Hollywood celebrities and sports heroes that make this their playground. This Valley has a big city personality in a small compacted area. You wouldn’t be able to attend all the events, theater, films, restaurants or pubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas or San Diego like you can here because those cities are so spread out, congested with traffic (and the rudest drivers), and most with a typically poor metropolitan infrastructure. e have more film, theater and art museums per capita in this Valley than perhaps any where else in the world. Just to mention a few notables, we have the McCallum, the Palm Springs Follies, the Arthur Newman, the Annenberg and the Coachella Valley Repertory Theaters. In art, we have the Palm Springs and Palm Desert Art Museums, the El Paseo Galleries, the Back Street Alley galleries and the Annenberg Estate which recently opened to the public as the Sunnylands Center and Gardens. We also have the Palm Springs Air Museum, the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum and Cabot’s Pueblo Museum. And of course we have a variety of Indian casinos – Fantasy Springs, Spotlight 29, The Spa, Augustine, Morongo and Aqua Caliente Resort casinos. What more could a snowbird ask for? There is a lot to do here in the Coachella Valley and not enough days in the year to experience everything. Snowbirds are very important to our local economy. Our merchants should do more to entice and welcome them. In Needles, California, a small Colorado River

with nothing better to do.

Truth is, snowbirds are generally retired. They don’t have to be in a hurry to get to the bank or anywhere else for that matter. Maybe if all of us could adopt a more patient attitude and take a little more time to understand choices and differences we are faced with every day, then we could begin to see why and how senior citizens do what they do. They have lived a lot more life than the rest of us. Just maybe we could learn a little from them. After all, we will all be in their shoes someday…or hope that we will be.

Green light for the

2012 Holiday Parade

By Dave Christensen DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA - The city council voted 2 to 1 to proceed with the Dec. 15 Holiday Parade. The vote for the parade was cast by Councilman Adam Sanchez and Mayor Yvonne Parks to proceed with the parade. Mayor Pro Tem Jan Pye cast the solo nay vote. Councilmembers Scott Matas and Russell Betts recused themselves. The proposed route of the parade will start at Desert View and Pierson Blvd., and proceed southbound to Two Bunch Palm shopping center. The city

will provide police protection, barricades, liability insurance and wave the permit fee. Contending against the parade, Police Commander Dan Bressler said “…the city did not have enough staff to have a parade go down Palm Drive,” but they would be able to staff an alternate parade route to go westbound on Pierson. However, the Community and Cultural Affairs Committee member and parade subcommittee leader Joe McKee said the committee “would not even lightly consider” changing the parade route. “For 20 years the parade went down Palm Drive, a significant number of buildings are abandoned, have been boarded up with foundations are just sitting there from buildings that have been torn

down. Access to the parade route would be more difficult for spectators and public parking would be further away with the proposed alternate route. “Marching into the wind would present a significant issue,” as opposed to the Palm Drive route where business buildings block the wind. The end route at K-Mart rather than Desert Hot Springs High School would benefit the business community,” McKee added. “We are ready to go, but we can’t convince bands to come if we don’t know if we are going to get your support. Everything we have done is worthless if we don’t get your approval.” “Either we start coming together as a community or we start falling apart,”

said Councilman Sanchez. “We don’t have a 4th of July parade because fireworks cost a tremendous amount of money. When it comes to doing an event that embraces what is good and great about this community, that’s what a parade does.” DHS Chamber of Commerce volunteer ambassador Jennifer Braun said “This community doesn’t have any events for the children of this community to look forward to. We need a parade for this city to heal; you can’t say bahhum-bug to that.” The city council vote gave the green light to proceed with plans to have a Holiday Parade on Dec. 15. On Oct. 18 the CCAC met and shifted into overdrive to “bring back” the Holiday Parade.

hings change. The horse and buggy era gave way to the automobile. Lanterns were replaced with the invention of the light bulb. In 1981, Microsoft Founder Bill Gates purportedly said 640K of computer memory ought to be enough for anybody. Caterpillars become butterflies. Once the encyclopedia Britannica was our source for understanding the world, today the internet has become an astonishing and phenomenal tool that literally puts planet Earth at your fingertips. Type in any conceivable topic on your computer keyboard and up pops volumes of information on the subject. Growing up in the 1950s and 1960s in Chandler, Indiana, a sleepy Midwest farm town of about 700 people was an experience I wish every young fella could enjoy. Me and my best friend, Dennis Lockhart, whom I met in kindergarten almost 55 years ago, could ride our bikes anywhere in the county without any worries. We had cane poles stashed at every fishin’ hole in the area and we carried our slingshots and cap guns ready to take on any “stwaainjuh” that got in our way. And frequently, we would ride down to Ralph Bond’s Phillips 66 gas station and watch the old men play checkers and listen to them talk about growin’ crops or the current weather. One thing the old timers at the station never did do though was gossip or speak ill of someone. That was just something gentlemen did not do in my era. “The Andy Griffith Show” wasn’t fantasy about Midwest small town living. It was a real life reflection of the Chandler’s dotted throughout middle and southern America. People were kind. Everybody knew everybody. Neighbors and the town’s people helped each other with whatever the need might be. Today, in the infinite expanse of cyberspace, nobody knows anybody. Kindness seems to be in short supply and almost non-existent. Now, anyone can write the vilest things about someone they’ve never met, whether it’s true or not. An anonymous Internet post can destroy a person’s life simply by typing a malicious message or rumor. You don’t need a gun anymore to kill someone. Say enough cruel things about a fragile soul on the Internet and it can drive a person to commit suicide. Decency is a virtue that seems to be lost today in Internet conversation among web browsers. It was 1986 when a friend of mine bought an Apple Macintosh Plus. He paid about $2,600 to get plugged into this developing new computer term called “online.” His family and I sat down one evening and pretty much went through

the entire Internet in just a few hours. The internet in those days was a small community of people. Everyone was nice to one another and we all shared our names with each other. Being crass, secretive or rude wasn’t even something any of us considered. I remember telling By Frances Allen my buddy the Internet reminded me of an “electronic Chandler,” small and friendly. There are now companies that exist to manage one’s reputation that might need help in reversing damaging and unfounded charges placed on the Internet. How is this different from the crime of identity theft? Those that are hiding behind a computer screen and made-up user name, do they think they are better or different from an identity thief just because they are hurting someone anonymously? What the Heck is a Fiscal Clif f

“I think the (presidential) candidates know how serious it is. I think they are trying to avoid it in part because it is so consequential and serious and the ideas that would be put forward are unattractive to some people.” The Simpson-Bowles committee has outlined specific recommendations f o r Washington, DC to consider and implement to avoid the fiscal cliff yet nothing has been done with that work. This is a huge IF but IF the politicians actually do something and avert this fiasco (not just kick the can down the road again), the markets could rally strongly behind that news. The International Monetary Fund, (IMF) is a global thinktank. Their opinions and forecasts are followed very closely by economic and political leaders from around the globe. The IMF describes themselves as, “An organization of 188 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.” Earlier this month the IMF issued a similar warning but went a little further than the Simpson-Bowles committee. They forecast global growth would fall. They lowered US GDP estimates to 2 percent for 2012 and a little lower for 2013. They went on to say that the same problems we were facing in 2008 when markets collapsed around the world are still plaguing us today. That’s a very frightening comment when you consider all the money that central banks and governments have thrown at this problem. Things haven’t gotten a lot better. The IMF warned specifically that the US and the globe would be negatively impacted if the US government does not

?

Many of my clients have been asking about this “Fiscal Cliff” that you are hearing so much about in the news these days. “Fiscal Cliff” is the term coined by the Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke who used it to describe the peril of what will happen should the automatic tax increases and massive spending cuts be allowed to take effect on Jan. 1, 2013. Leaders from around the globe are concerned of the dire consequences if nothing is done to stop this looming disaster. Recently, Erskine Bowles, NC businessman and cochairman of President Obama’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform issued a stern warning: “We have $7.7 trillion worth of economic events that are going to hit America in the gut in December and in Washington, they’re (US politicians are) doing nothing about it.” Bowles’ co-chair on the commission is former Republican Senator Alan Simpson. Simpson went on to say that the culture in Washington, DC is preventing any action to address what is known as the fiscal cliff. “They are both in this,” Simpson said of the warring Democratic and Republican parties. They worship the god of re-election.”

By Kevin Powell address the problem. “We hope that both sides of the political isle (should) signal that they are willing to compromise and that they are willing to get this done.” A consensus of economists has stated that failure to do anything would result in damage as high as $720 billion dollars to our economy. That would result in a 4.6 percent drop in our GDP (Gross Domestic Product). A decline that large would plunge us into another recession. Sadly many of the Bush era tax cuts that will go away at the end of the year are not just for wealthy Americans. Four tax breaks in particular will have a profound impact on middle and lower income families. They are the Child Tax Credit, the Earned Income Credit, Child & Dependent Care and the American Opportunity Credit or the Old Hope College tax credit. There is no reason for our country to be put in this position. This is not a Democratic or Republican issue. This is a pending crisis for every citizen. We should hold our elected officials to a much higher standard. Unfortunately, once the partying and celebrations from the elections are over, there will only be a few short weeks to address this problem and avoid the fiscal cliff. How much do you trust our politicians to finally do the right thing? STARSilverScreen Disney’s “Cinderella” and Warner Bros. Comedy “The Campaign” On Oct. 2, Disney Studios opened up their magical vault to release one of Walt Disney’s most charming fairytale classics-- “Cinderella” on Blu-ray and DVD. Every little Princess in the family will love this timeless story about a young girl who has faith that her dreams will come true as she sings “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” while doing the many chores expected of her by her unloving stepmother and her two pampered stepsisters. She is cheerful and kind and the animals, especially the many little mice that live in her home, adore her. They all try to do their best to keep her spirits up. Well almost all of the animals are on her side, except for the cat, Lucifer. Even though the cat lives up to his name, his devilish antics are part of the humor that is sprinkled throughout. Things look as if they are about to change for Cinderella when an invitation from the castle arrives asking all the eligible young ladies in the kingdom to attend a Royal Ball.

Unfortunately, before Cinderella can sew a dress for herself, her stepsisters constantly interrupt her preparations. They keep her so busy helping them get ready that she has no time to create an outfit to wear that evening, but the busy little mice and the birds all pitch in to create a gown for their “Cinderellie” while she waits on her stepsisters, hand and foot. Their mother, Lady Tremaine, encourages their dreadful behavior and by the time Cinderella finishes helping them primp and preen she has no dress to wear. When she sadly goes to her humble room she discovers the gown her busy little friends have created. As she hurries to join her stepmother and stepsisters in their carriage they rip her dress to shreds. Now all hope is gone. Cinderella runs sobbing into the garden as her sister ‘uglies’ head for the palace. Then, out of the blue, her fairy godmother appears and faster than you can say “BibbidyBobbidy- Boo!” she is sprinkled with fairy dust and magically dressed in a gown befitting a princess. Van Morrison, Jason Aldean & Off Kilter

Worth Buying By Robert Kinsler

Back On Top

Legendary singersongwriter Van Morrison, modern country singer Jason Aldean and the genrebusting Celtic outfit Off Kilter have issued releases worth a multitude of listens.

Artist: Van Morrison Title: Born To Sing: No Plan B (Blue Note Records) You might be interested in buying this if you like: Mark Knopfler, Donald Fagen, John Hiatt. Tell me more: Van Morrison’s sound has always boasted an amalgamation of rock, soul, R&B, folk and jazz. So it’s not surprising that the Northern Irish singersongwriter’s new album “Born To Sing: No Plan B” is immersed in that like-minded intoxicating sweet brew that wisely branded albums such as 1968’s “Astral Weeks” and 1970’s “Moondance” landmarks. The six-time Grammy Award winner’s new album finds the 67-year-old Morrison at the top of his

game with his potent vocals dancing amidst the horns on the bouncy “Open the Door (To Your Heart)” and singing tenderly on the extended jazzy ballad “Goin’ Down to Monte Carlo.” “End of the Rainbow” is otherworldly in its beauty and “Mystic of the East” s h owc a s e s M o r r i s o n’s uncanny ability at phrasing a lyric like no other singer. The biggest surprise? M o r r i s o n’s heavy blues gem “Pagan Heart” that conjures up memories of John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson. Information: www. vanmorrison.com.

modern country music’s biggest stars, Jason Aldean headlined at the first night of Stagecoach in Indio earlier this year and topped the Go Fest country music festival in nearby Orange County last month. Based on the strength of his just-released fifth album “Night Train,” there is a good chance that Aldean will continue to be packing in fans whenever and wherever he is performing. From the beautiful power ballad “I Don’t Do Lonely Well,” to his first hit single off “Night Train,” the infectious “Take A Little Ride,” Aldean blends arena rock and authentic country with a magical touch that has eluded most of his contemporaries. The icing on the cake is the up-tempo “The Only Way I Know,” where he collaborates up with fellow country superstars Luke Bryan and Eric Church. Information: www. BrokenBowRecords.com.

any major U.S. city and it’s not unusual to find an Irish pub hosting young rockers playing amped-up versions of traditional Irish tunes such as “Dirty Old Town” or “Drunken Sailor.” But Minneola, Floridabased Off Kilter is not your common Celtic troupe; the quintet blends Emerald Isle melodies and rhythms with the explosiveness of the American Wake and Young Dubliners layered with the progressive rock appeal and virtuoso musicianship of ASIA. On “The Live Tracks,” the winning mix of bagpipes, whistles, bass, guitar and drums comes in support of strong vocals and astounding arrangements on well-known standards (“Whiskey in the Jar,” “Wild Rover”), unearthed treasures (“Fields of Athenry”) and even reworked rock classics (Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. “Just 45 Minutes From Broadway” By Alejandro Paiz PALM SPRINGS, CA – “Just 45 Minutes From Broadway,” from maverick writer and director Henry Jaglom’s (“Déjà Vu,” ”Eating,” “Festival in Cannes,” “Venice Venice”) is a wonderfully insightful and disarmingly comic celebration of actors and those who love them, opens Friday, Oct. 26 at the Camelot Theater. The show opened in Los Angeles on Oct. 3 and in New York on Oct. 17. “Just 45 Minutes From Broadway” stars the extraordinary and effervescent Tanna Frederick (“Queen of the Lot,” “Irene in Time”) and in a revelatory performance, Judd Nelson (“The Breakfast Club”). Whether trodding the boards for paying audiences or performing at the kitchen table for her theatrical family, the only place Pandora Isaacs (Frederick) has ever felt truly safe and entirely at home is onstage. Like so many actors, she is not completely sure about the difference between real life and the theater and - as she willingly admits - she really doesn’t want to. Stinging from a recent romantic break-up, she retreats to the safety of her parents’ ramshackle upstate country house — “Just 45 minutes from Broadway”— where her non-theatrical sister (Julie Davis, “I Love You, Don’t Touch Me!) and her sister’s non-Jewish fiancée (Nelson) are also arriving for the weekend and the family’s yearly Passover Seder, which is presided over by another uncle (Michael Emil, “Insignificance”). Family secrets, sibling rivalries and the possibility of true love as rare as a blue bullfrog all emerge, but at what cost? Evoking the pathos of Phillip Barry’s “Holiday,” Just 45 Minutes From Broadway is a bravura observation of the machinations that involve and intertwine family, love and the dynamics of the theater. The film co-stars David Proval (“The Departed”), Diane Salinger (“Carnivale”), Jack Heller (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”). and singer/ songwriter Harriett Schock.

STARTravel PD Chamber Expensive Hotels and Ice Skating in New York offers group Most Expensive Hotel Rooms in the US

“There’s gold in dem thar hills!” At least there is for some hoteliers, according to a survey taken by Luxury-Hotels.com. If you had to guess where the most expensive hotel in the country is, what would you say? New York City, Washington, D.C., Beverly Hills; good choices all, but they are all inexpensive when compared to The Ranch

that the Burj Al Arab is on nearly everyone’s short-list of moneyed hotels. You may not be familiar with the name but you have probably seen a photograph or two of the hotel -- a 1,000 feet tall structure designed to resemble a billowing sail sitting on its own island off the coast of Dubai in the UAE. It’s considered as one of the most photographed objects in the world.

Burj Al Arab at Rock Creek, located in mining country outside of Philipsburg, Montana. Here people have stopped mining for gold; they have hung up their sifting pans and exchanged bulky mining equipment for a mini-credit card reader. And, you will need a very high balance card; a night’s stay at the ranch during an extended summer season, in the most affordable double room, will average $2,279. Want to spend more? The Ranch at Rock Creek also rents out well-appointed log and stone cabins at correspondingly higher nightly amounts. ‘Rustic’ must be the new opulence as the second most expensive accommodations in the U.S. are found at the $1,848 per night Point Resort, situated within the boundaries of Adirondack Park, in Lake Placid, New York. Following, in a very close third place is Bush Creek Ranch, located in South Central Wyoming’s North Platte River Valley, where a night’s rest starts at $1,770. But it comes as no surprise

Not shy about its status, the Burj Al Arab describes itself as the “Worlds Most Luxurious Hotel,” and who can argue with amenities, such as insuite check-in and check-out, reception desks on every floor, round-the-clock private butlers and use of the hotel’s fleet of Rolls-Royces. There is one other aspect of the Burj that attracts a lot of attention: the hotel’s connection to the sea and fish. Known for its fish tank display, the hotel recently renovated its massive aquariums, two on either side of the lobby and one built over and around a walkway leading into the hotel’s sea food restaurant. These aquariums are designed to be the ultimate undersea habitat for more than 4,000 exotic fish and contain underwater lighting, artificial coral reefs and a state-of-theart filtration system. How much will all these amenities cost a night? It’s amazingly inexpensive; about half of what a night at the

The Rink at Rockefeller Center, one of the most iconic sights in New York City, has just opened for the 20122013 season. Now operated by the Patina Restaurant Group, ice skating on the rink at Rockefeller Center began 76 years ago and since then it has become one of the most romantic, and family friendly things to do during the holiday season while in New York. However, this year will see some innovations, such as VIP Express Skating, where for $95, between Nov. 16 and Jan. 7, guests bypass the line and receive admission, skate rental, hot cocoa and the services of a skate concierge to book time on the ice. A n ot h e r f e a t u re , “Engagement on Ice,” is available throughout the season. This program offers couples private ice time for their proposal, a rink-side Champagne toast and an optional dinner package. PALM SPRINGS, CA – Want to see how airport security has changed? Come to the Palm Springs Air Museum and see artist Steve Maloney’s fascinating mixed media exhibit. The Museum has cleared the runway for the debut of “Banned Booty – Palm Springs Checkpoint.” The exhibition runs through May 17. The exhibit is included with regular museum admission, which ranges from $8 to $15. The Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Maloney’s show is set against the backdrop of vintage World War II combat aircraft. The exhibit is created from items confiscated from carry-on bags at airports by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) during the days following 9/11. Maloney uses a shipping container doubles as an exterior canvas for a retro-style black and white illustration of air passengers standing on the tarmac ready to board.

Maloney’s Houdini Booty Lock-Up (2002) is located outside the container, composed of confiscated oddsand-ends such as a common blender blade, barbells, a butane torch, corn-on-the-cob skewers, deer antlers etc, boxed in bullet proof Plexiglas, roped with a 60-foot rusted chain with antique padlocks. The five composite sculptures inside the container are: Booty Runway Sculpture (2011) with 16-feet of confiscated miscellany encased in Plexiglas superimposed over a landing strip base; a seasoned Travelers (2003) with mixed media of confiscated scissors, tools, and video game gun with oil and resin on canvas; a Traveler’s Pile Up (2003) with mixed media including confiscated scissors, folding pocket knives, a wrench, a drafting compass and even a bicycle kick-stand with oil and resin on canvas; a Big Banned Booty (2002) with everything from reflex hammers to cork

screws with resin, acrylic and pastel on canvas; a Swiss Travelers (2003) with – you guessed it – brightly colored confiscated Swiss Army Knives with oil and resin on canvas A QR Code on the outside of the shipping container for smartphone users connects them to BannedBooty.com and Banned Booty on Facebook. More than 28 flyable vintage aircraft are housed in 65,000 square feet of climate controlled hangar space. The Berger Foundation Youth Exploration Center and an 8,500 volume library with flight simulators round out activities for all ages. The exhibit is included with regular museum admission, $8 to $15. The Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and on Feb. 8. Call 760-778-6262. the Palm Springs market in December 2011 with a daily nonstop flight from SFO and a daily “same plane” through flight from JFK to PSP. Just weeks after launching its service into Palm Springs, Virgin America partnered with the Palm Springs International Film Festival as a premier sponsor. In April 2012 the airline ramped up service during the Coachella Music Festival and hosted unique events for festival-goers, including a flight with a live DJ spinning from the back of the plane. “We’re thrilled to see Virgin America expand its award-winning service in

our region. Virgin America’s fresh approach to travel is obviously striking a chord with travelers headed to and from the Coachella Valley,” said Scott White, president and CEO of Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Virgin America’s added commitment to our region will help lower fares and improve service in our market, allowing more travelers to enjoy all that our dynamic region has to offer,” White added. “Since entering these Palm Springs markets, we’ve seen strong demand for our unique flight service. We’re pleased to be expanding in the market

and offering a new nonstop option for travelers coming from New York to the Desert oasis this winter,” said John MacLeod, senior vice president of Planning and Sales at Virgin America. “With service that continues to sweep the travel awards, touch-screen entertainment at every seat and new aircraft that look like nothing else in the domestic skies, we think our flights are a great fit for the region. We’re thankful for the partnership and support of the airport, Mayor and tourism community in welcoming our new service and helping us grow.”

This is exactly where many aspiring writers fail undefined they strive for beautiful metaphors, authentic dialogue, and interesting characters, losing sight of the one thing that every engaging story must do: ignite the brain’s hardwired desire to learn what happens next. When writers tap into the evolutionary purpose of story and electrify our curiosity, it triggers a delicious dopamine rush that tells us to pay attention. STARAutomotive 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo More than just a pretty face

H

yundai (say it like “Sunday”) has upped the ante with a new Turbo model for the Veloster, their new street-fighter that lives up to its moniker. This quick and nimble three-door will set you well apart from the pack - both in looks and performance. Hyundai is selling these cars as fast as

hardware set. The 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine produces 201 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 195 lb-ft of torque from 1750 – 4500 rpm with regular fuel. Hyundai’s 1.6-liter Gamma turbocharged engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger that when combined with the

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo they can make them, and for good reason - it’s affordable, good-looking, fun to drive, and economical. The name “Veloster” is play on the words velocity and roadster. It faces off against worthy competitors like the Volkswagen GTI, Honda Civic Si and Mini Cooper/Clubman S, but with a better power-toweight ratio than all of them, and a unique sport-tuned steering and suspension

14

GDI system, results in quick power delivery. To handle the power enhancements and deliver good economy, Veloster Turbo is paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission - and it gets from 27 to 38-mpg. Veloster Turbo features a quicker ratio steering rack and a revised steering calibration to match, which both give drivers precise cornering, feedback and

control. All Veloster Turbo’s ride on Kumho Solus KH25 215/40R18 85V tires designed to extract the best performance out of the car without compromising the ride. Overall, the package combines to offer an enhanced driving experience over the standard Veloster - well worth the $4,500 price difference. The package goes well beyond just bolting on a turbo charger, as this is nearly its own distinct model. The proof is in the driving experience, and throughout this test I was impressed with the small details, but mostly with feel of the car from the driver’s seat, under way. Braking and power were smooth an linear, and the steering was controlled although a bit hyperactive feeling at low speeds.

nside, full leather seats with the word “Turbo” stitched into the seatbacks help deliver a unique look and provide exceptional support and comfort. An exclusive Supervision Cluster offers the driver information in a larger, clearer and more interactive format. This is due to the Supervision Cluster’s two TFT screens located between the tachometer and the

Cockpit of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo speedometer. Heated front seats are also standard on the Turbo version. The center stack and controls also resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate a push-button starter and alloy pedals. In the digital age, everyone wants to be connected to their electronics at all times, so

The Turbo features a standard 450-watt Dimension Premium Audio system with eight speakers including an eight-inch subwoofer, external amplifier and iPod/USB/auxiliary input jacks. An XM Satellite Radio interface is also integrated into the head unit and

AutomotiveSTAR Suzuki SX4 Crossover Lowest-price AWD vehicle, gets 30-mpg

A

s American drivers continue to pursue alternate modes of transportation, Suzuki owners and enthusiasts describe Suzuki’s SX4 Crossover as one of the purest examples of ‘alternative’ transport. With 5-door architecture providing both spacious accommodation and flexible utility, and its standard all-wheel drive delivering all-season capability, the SX4 Crossover continues to successfully embrace an automotive duality of day-today practicality and weekend recreation. The name “Suzuki” could easily be interchangeable with the word “value” - as the carmaker continue to bring more value to the brand. The SX4 Crossover is the lowest price AWD car in the US, and every Suzuki goes down the road with the backing of America’s #1 Warranty - a 100,000 miles/ seven-year, fully transferable, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty. The SX4 pricing starts at just $16,999. Penned by Giugiaro’s ItalDesign, the SX4 Crossover is arguably the most European of the Japanese-assembled cars and trucks competing for the U.S. consumer. While the Crossover’s overall dimensions are relatively small, its high roofline and

spacious greenhouse make in-town errand running the proverbial piece-of-cake. The SX4 Crossover benefits from an all-new front fascia, alloy wheels, and new exterior colors. Those same proportions allow easy access to the interior. Once inside you’ll find spacious accommodation for your family – and the stuff a family brings with it. Raised theater-style seating enhances the spacious feeling experienced by the rear seat passengers. And if your travels (and Suzuki’s all-wheel drive) take you far afield, those rear seats fold, providing all the room necessary to enjoy an extended, off-the-grid holiday. The 2013 SX4 Crossover retains the MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam rear axle in back. In combination with accurate, well-connected steering, standard all-wheel drive, 4-wheel disc braking and all-season rubber, the SX4 Crossover is equipped for sure-footed handling. Since its introduction, the SX4 Crossover has been America’s most affordable AWD automobile. ith most hatches in its competitive segment offering engines either at or under 1.6 liters, Suzuki’s SX4 family gives a full 2.0 liters

W

Suzuki SX4 Crossover of displacement, along with 150-horsepower. The end result is flexibility in any driving environment, from Penn Station to Pikes Peak, all while delivering from 23 to 30-mpg. riving the Crossover was fun. The large doors offer easy access, and outward visibility is great. There’s a bit too much road noise, and I drove the car for four days before I could figure out how to get the map to display on the display for GPS navigation. All that aside, it was peppy and eagerly followed every input, from steering to braking to acceleration. For those preferring a 4-door profile, generous interior room and a spacious, secure trunk, the SX4 sedan

D

and SX4 Sport continue to supply a made-in-Japan trifecta. Powered by the same 2.0 liter engine, the SX4 sedan and Sport offer a great combination of space,

It’s

efficiency and affordability. Sharing the 5-door utility of the SX4 Crossover with the more precise handling of the SX4 Sport, the 2013 SportBack is the essential ingredient for those whose active lifestyles typically take place on the beaten – rather than unbeaten – path. Well received by both Suzuki enthusiasts and those simply looking for practical, well-designed transportation, the SportBack can deliver an host of attributes to each segment of its audience. As with the Crossover, SX4 sedan and SX4 Sport, the SportBack enjoys a full 2.0 liters of displacement connected to either a 6-speed manual or CVT. MacPherson struts in front supply tenacious roadholding, while in back

the SportBack’s torsion beam keeps the rear in your rearview mirror. Relative to the Crossover and sedan, the SportBack enjoys a lowered ride height, performance shocks, stabilizer bars and 50-series all-season Dunlops. In 2013 the SportBack receives a revised front fascia outside and interior enhancements. Overall, the SRX line is a cool grouping of models that fit the active lifestyles of today’s Suzuki driver. Rivals include Subaru Impreza, Toyota Matrix, Nissan Juke, and most of the other affordable compact cars. For more information, see your local Suzuki dealer, or visit SuzukiAuto.com. Mental Health Summit PALM DESERT, CA – The Coachella Valley Health Collaborative will host a mental health summit at Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus on Friday, Oct. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free summit, which will take place in the campus’s Indian Wells Theater, is a “working-summit.” Local decision makers and community leaders in the fields of healthcare and mental health are encouraged to attend. The public is invited to attend the morning session on a spaceavailable basis. No walk-ins will be accepted. “Our concern is that our comprehensive and actionable strategic plan, designed to reduce mental illness stigma and increase access to mental health services, will lie on a shelf only to be dusted off in a few years with nothing accomplished,” said Gary Jeandron, CVHC director. “The Mental Health Summit II will ensure this does not happen.” Mental healthcare leaders will be invited to the afternoon

session to review a strategic plan designed to reduce mental illness stigma and increased access to mental health services in the Coachella Valley and Pass area. Based on the strategic plan, attendees will be asked to develop action plans and commit to implementing them. Confirmed panelists include: Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack; Assemblyman Brian Nestande; Assemblyman Manuel Pérez; and Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit The keynote speaker will be Ron Manderscheid, executive director, National Association of County Behavioral Health and Developmental Disability Directors. To register for the summit or for more information, contact Regina Garrison at rgarriso@ csusb.edu. The Coachella Valley Health Collaborative held its first mental health summit in March 2012 to discuss reducing mental health stigma. This summit was primarily designed for individuals involved in the delivery or

receipt of services. Attendees discussed how to implement a local campaign to reduce stigmas related to mental illness and develop ideas on how to increase services for those who need them. Attendees participated in four breakout sessions in the categories of Latinos, LGBTQ, seniors, and youth. The sessions collected brain-storming information to be used in the development of a strategic plan to reduce mental health stigma and increase access to mental health services. The mission of the Coachella Valley Health Collaborative is to provide a meaningful forum for individuals, agencies, and organizations to improve the health and well being of residents of eastern Riverside County. Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus, on behalf of the Coachella Valley Health

Collaborative, received funding from Riverside County to focus on early intervention in mental health issues. The CSUSB Palm Desert Campus is located at 37-500 Cook St. in Palm Desert. Living LONGER

By Art Kunkin - Mr Life Extension “Focusing” is a technique that was discovered in the 1970s by a group of researchers from the University of Chicago. They discovered that psychological therapy often doesn’t work, not because the psychologists involved are incompetent but because their patients were simply not hearing or accepting verbal advice, even good advice. Therapy was successful only when the patients would feel and accept the advice given by their bodies. After observing that simple fact, the researchers learned how to increase the success rate of therapy by teaching people to “focus” on the felt-shift of the body rather than words. Professor Eugene Gendlin, the organizer and leader of those Chicago researchers, then published in 1978 a small paperback titled “Focusing” summarizing his research. This book has sold over 500,000 copies and been translated into many foreign languages, proving valuable for people in many different fields. I personally treasure two copies of early editions of “Focusing” that I purchased for pennies in thrift shops. I have found that when people focus during the Tibetan meditations I teach, they can get important information about themselves directly from their bodies without relying on confusing words. In other words, people who “focus” heal quicker, experience less pain, learn new information more thoroughly, are better in business, in test-taking, become more confident in relationships, in creating inventions or in repairing automobiles. Focusing produces magical results! Our sentences are often like algebraic equations with the individual words being the unknown x’s, thus hindering communication, understanding and action. The body is often more truthful, direct and applicable than our words. The good news is that Professor Gendlin has made some new discoveries about teaching focusing that he and his associate, Ann Weiser Cornell, will be communicating personally to participants in a telephone seminar on “Going Forward With Focusing” taking place at 1 p.m. one and onehalf hours per week for five Thursdays, Nov. 8,to Dec. 13 (skipping Nov. 22). The fee is $195 for early registration. The fee increases to $245 on Nov. 3. The last day to register is Nov. 8. There are no pre-requisites. Your money is refundable up to five days before the first day of class minus a processing free of $35. Yes, it is possible to take the course by listening to the recordings. This seminar meets the qualifications for 7.5 continuing education credits (CEUs) for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. PCE #1015. I am also announcing this week an eight-week Life Extension and Happiness Course that has three major objectives: 1: To teach scientific techniques that will possibly help you live for a minimum of 200 years and overcome all fears, including the fear of death; 2: To teach techniques of peak performance, personal power and happiness, including focusing, so that you can fully benefit in all ways from your greatly expanded life span. 3: To teach spiritual methods for surviving accidental physical death even if that happens before you reach a 200 year minimum life span. This free eight-week Life Extension and Happiness Course will be taught by Art Kunkin, former president of the Philosophical Research Society in Lo Angeles, founding publisher and editor of the weekly newspaper Los Angeles Free Press, and Advisory Board Member of the Institute of Mentalphysics in Joshua Tree. There will be two introductory sessions for this Life Extension and Happiness Course on Thursdays, Oct.25 and Nov. 1, at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, 59700 Twenty Nine Palms Highway, 7 to 9 p.m. in the Meditation Building. Although no one will be turned away, a donation of $5 per session is requested to cover the cost of printing student materials. After the first session on Thursday, Nov. 8, this course will be closed to new students and you will have to wait for a new Course to start at a later date. It is planned to also offer this Course on the Internet at www.Best-Life-Extension-Methods.com a free membership website being constructed this week that will review for you all the life extension research being done by scientists throughout the world. You will then be able to access this useful information in the convenience of your home without having to travel to the Retreat Center. There will be a sign on the bulletin board at the front entrance of the Retreat Center giving directions to the Meditation Building where this class is being held on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. A free download of a magazine cover story interview with Art Kunkin about his research into stopping aging is now available at www.alchemyrevealed.com. Art’s eBook, “Life Extension Alchemy: The Secret of Immortality Finally Revealed,” is also available at a reduced sale price of $9 at that website. Copyright 2012 by Art Kunkin, all rights reserved.

Week of Oct. 25 -31 Sun In Scorpio Most Affected are Scorpio and All Water Signs. The month will begin in the sign of Scorpio, for Vedic – Libra. For Scorpio: All Plutonian themes such as test of loyalty, concentration, courage or fear, depth and intensity, darkness, mystery, secrets, detection, jealousy, revenge and transformation will rule supreme until Nov. 22. A more heightened awareness of the mysterious, intrigue, sex and the occult. The best side of Scorpio is seen in their devil’s advocate manner, their loyalty to the cause and assisting others for the sake of transformation. The key is to know how to work on transformation of yourself, for yourself and, when to let go by leaving justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: Celebrate this month with respect, action with and towards water around you, water within you; experience the transformational power of Aquatic Pool Yoga or other water sports, exercises, techniques. Best Sacred Geometry: Icosahedron (Water). Best Yantra: The colors Black, Orange or Oxblood.

Oct. 28 Venus Into Libra: Most affected are Libra and All Air Signs. (This includes the sign of Taurus as the planet Venus is also their ruling sign). This transit will continue until Nov. 21. For Libra: Enjoy your new popularity and the

good possibility of romantic interests. This will be one of the best times of the year for your creativity and your love Life. The signs of Taurus and other Libras may figure more prominently. This transit will assist you to open doors so that you’ll gain people’s attention to sell them what you wish to. However, when Venus is in any sign of the Zodiac, the senses are heightened as well; watch what you desire and consume. Whatever you choices are, you will fare better if you begin with your intention from the heart. Exercise and refresh yourself: Enjoy taking a spa, bathe and enjoy mineral salts or aromatherapy oils. For Taurus: An office or business related flirtation is possible. Or, you may want to channel those energies into a successful, creative project. During this period, watch what you desire and consume. For All Signs: At the entry of this transit, there are supersensitive alignments that can have the most innocent of comments rub someone the wrong way. Once the moon moves into the sign of Taurus on Oct. 29, things begin to stabilize; many people may begin to find the pleasure principle more fun than chaos, debates and concerns.

Oct. 29 MercuRy into Sagittarius Most Affected are Sagittarius, Gemini and Virgo. This transit will continue until Nov. 20. For Sagittarius: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses in your sign,

you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. The sign of Gemini or Virgo may figure more prominently. Words are just words without depth or positive intention behind them. Choose your words carefully to help promote your intention with clarity. Mercury will turn Retrograde a week later while in your sign; prepare and read about this transit. For Gemini: The fun begins the first week of this transit as your communications expand even further as well as your desire to learn more about the spiritual side of Life. The challenges begin once Mercury goes Retrograde while in Sagittarius, a week later. For Virgo: Your ruling planet takes on a little more fun, Fire and assists your ways of thinking. You may choose to view metaphysics with an open mind and learn how to open your heart. The sign of Sagittarius rules prominently. A week later when Mercury goes retrograde, try not to do an “about face”. For All Signs: We are encouraged to take a new route in exploring spiritual paths. Visit a specialty shop such as your local metaphysics, spiritual store that may also sell books, art and music that may speak to your soul. and may also involve your moral principles. For All Signs: We need not feel struggle to accomplish our goals, but we may feel the weight of change upon us now. If you accept as is, you are ready to make the changes needed. With this Full Moon, light can be shed on where to transform important relationships in our lives. In your meditation, ask the Universe for guidance, cultivate a deeper connection and support from Mother Earth. Best Mantra: YAM. Best Color: Deep Green.

On-Going Astrological Affects:

Oct. 29 Full Moon In Taurus

Uranus Retrograde Most af fecte d are Aquarius. This transit began on July 12 and will continue until Dec. 13. For Aquarius: Your ruling planet is retrograde; the energies are inward. Refrain from displaying negative emotions in front of others. Your best answers will come from within, not always from outside. For All Signs: We need to continue to review some of our ideas, especially if it involves the off-beat, the unusual or the collective group. The revolution continues a little more quietly; rather than hurling it in the faces of others, it turns inward, reaching for inner freedom from psychological limits. Occupy your inner wisdom, your third-eye.

Most Affected are Taurus and All Earth Signs. For Taurus: The Full Moon is in your sign and brings about completion before beginning or taking on something new. It would be best for you to not dig your heels in, but rather, just go with the flow. It is time for letting go from your home, your emotions, or finding courage to say good-bye to the outdated or unhealthy people, places and habitual practices. This Full Moon illuminates a personal issue

The Girlfriend Factor Hosts Boutique Spa Tour

By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT, CA – The Girlfriend Factor is hosting a tour of six elite Desert Hot Springs spas as part of the Greater Palm Springs Spa & Salon Month of festivities in partnership with the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Oct. 25. The spa tour starts at 5 p.m. “Our goal is to provide educational grants to adult women so they can go back to school to become self-sufficient,” said Joan Busick, president of The Girlfriend Factor which operates out of Palm Desert. Women must be more than 25 years old to apply and currently the group is sponsoring 32 women in their program from Desert Hot Springs to Indio. “We are a small organization that promotes through a personal connection the needs of women in our community,” Busick added. The Girlfriend Factor sponsors other events to strengthen ties between women and the community such as their annual, “Wine, Chocolate and Shoes” event during Fashion Week in March. Last year’s sponsors were “Girls in the Vineyard” and and “Little Black Dress” hosting the wine segment; Godiva hosting the chocolate segment, and Sacks Fifth Avenue hosting the shoe segment. More than 700 people attended the 2011 event, she said. “Since the annual Desert Hot Springs Spa Tour in February often sells out quickly, this is a great opportunity for spa lovers to visit some of these exceptional spa properties known for their healing waters before the desert’s high season begins,” said Spa & Salon Month Chair Gayle Moore. Desert Hot Springs spas participating in the Oct. 25 spa tour include: Anahata Springs Spa & Retreat, Aqua Soleil Hotel & Mineral Water Spa, El Morocco Inn & Spa, Hacienda Hot Springs Inn & Spa, The Spring Resort & Spa, and Two Bunch Palms Resort and Spa. The Boutique Spa Tour price is $40 per person and includes tour transportation from Palm Desert to Desert Hot Springs via VIP Cardiff Coach, cocktails and light snack receptions at each resort, discount vouchers, a Desert Hot Springs Spa Tour reusable bag, and entry in Desert Hot Springs spa giveaway drawings. Sponsor Crater Lake Vodka will offer “spa-licious” drinks during the tour. To reserve your space today, visit www.thegirlfriendfactor. org and click on Events.

Desire Drug for Women?

HSDD aka Female Sexual Dysfunction: Alternatives to Age-Old Problem Part I

There are an approximately six million related articles on the Internet regarding “female sexual dysfunction” (FSD) and believe it or not, I perused an approximate one million in researching this article. Not one of these “related” articles gave a simple, healthy solution to the supposed problem. So I stopped the research and began on the journey, to share with you the proven, new, yet old alternative treatments. The History: Throughout history, Western medicine has pathologized women’s sexuality in order to understand and control it. During the Victorian era, many women with sexual problems were diagnosed as “hysterical.” In your grandmother’s time, women with low desire were said to suffer from frigidity (unable or unwilling to be sexually aroused and responsive). During the feminist movement of the 1960’s and 70’s, things began to change. The medicalizing of woman’s sexual experience was challenged and resisted. Terms such as “nymphomania,” “hysteria” and “frigidity” lost their punch. Presently, the condition of low desire is now called “hypoactive sexual desire disorder” (HSDD) and there are a large number of drug companies competing to find a spray, a pill, a cream or some attractive looking patch to cure it. And, they are also working on a “desire” – drug for women. The risk is that many healthy women will falsely think that they are diseased when in fact they are perfectly healthy and normal. However, it is important to note that some women do suffer from real physiological and emotional problems when they experience a lowering

of their sex drive. There are a number of reasons why your libido can be affected. From early childhood trauamas to hysterectomies and some anti-depressants, and other drugging really do affect libido. However, the majority of women do not suffer from a disease. For many of women, their libidos are influenced by everyday life experiences, in the linear sense: aging, sense of body image, o u r

relationship(s), stress, and past sexual encounters including rape. The History of the 43 Percent Statistic: This number was taken from a sociology survey that was conducted in the early ‘90s to find out what people’s sex lives were like. It was never meant to measure the number of women with a disease. Using exaggerated statistics like 43 percent manipulates women. It also says to large corporations and Wall Street that there is a large market for a drug to treat it. The term, “female sexual dysfunciton” came about in

www.desertstarweekly.com

the late 1990s. When Viagra was released it was such a great success drug for men that companies like Pfizer began to think that there was also a large market for a Viagra for women. The problem was that in order to develop and test a pharmaceutical drug, the FDA required that there be a clearly defined disease. Pfizer and a number of other drug companies sponsored the first meetings on FSD. In the end, 18 of the 19 authors of the definition of the disease had ties to 22 drug companies. This definition was extremely broad: Almost any sexual complaint you may have, whatever causes it, will fall into this “disease category.” In the documentary film, “Orgasm Inc.,” filmmaker Liz Canner followed the pharmaceutical industry over a period of nine years as it raced to develop a female Viagra. They kept claiming they were developing a magic cure, but most of the products did not work much better than a placebo. In fact, in the hearing for Procter and Gamble’s testosterone patch, Intrinsa, one of the doctors on the FDA panel suggested to P&G that they should consider developing a placebo instead because it worked almost as well and there were no side effects. And why side effects? Still laughable, unimaginable to this writer are those drug commercials that we see today that offer the “possible side affects” that are almost as long as the commercial themselves. One the most damaging socio-cultural beliefs popularized by psychoanalysis during the Sigmund Freud era was that women were supposed to have vaginal orgasms every time they had (heterosexual) intercourse. From the groundbreaking work of Alfred Kinsey in 1938 and Shere Hite in the

1970s, we know that this is not true. The new fact is: 70 percent of women need direct clitoral stimulation in order to climax to an orgasm. However, the thing about sexual experience today is having a sense of satisfaction that comes from expectations based on the linear- world media information. In other words, if the pharmaceutical industry, through their savvy marketing, can convince women that they should be having an orgasm every time they have intercourse, then a lot of women are going to believe they have female sexual dysfunction. The Cause: Yes, there are some women who suffer from medical conditions that make having an orgasm (and even intercourse) difficult

or impossible. However, the majority of women are not experiencing sexual dysfunction. In this modern world, men and women have not been given great sex education – for decades. It can be said that there is a connection to why some women can have many orgasms and why some women do not reach orgasm at all. Ancient, cosmic principles provide the answer to both. An Alternative Solution: To this day, modern agriculture is based on ancient principles that use the cosmic powers from our galaxy: This process comes from a foundational blueprint from ancient man. The same is with the principles in understanding the Devine

Feminine and your natural birthright to know the truth about these natural, cosmic forces within you that can bring you natural, healthy and safe solutions. From Ayurvedic to Tantra Yoga principles the answers are here, right now, available to you. TEAM SELECTED... PAGE 1 The Palm Springs Air Museum is home to one of the world’s largest collections of flyable WWII aircraft; and unlike many other museums, our air-conditioned hangars have no ropes to keep you from interacting with our exhibits. In addition to our aircraft, exhibits and activities allow visitors of all ages to gain a fresh perspective of World War II — the unparalleled event that shaped the world we live in. Our extensive library and our crew of trained volunteers can provide you details on the aircraft and a sense of the experience of flying them. Additionally, a number of aircraft are open for tours every day. Children of all ages are entranced by the big planes and entertained with related activities, from our kid-sized control tower to flying our simulators. And we’re pet friendly to friendly pets.

This team is the first of its kind in the City of DHS, and although they will be working closely with other regionally oriented enforcement teams in the Valley, their focus will be on crime within our city limits. “I’m very pleased to be able to make these appointments with these particular officers. Thousand PalmS... PAGE 1 and the Thousand Palms Community Park are within short walking distance from the community. Legacy is named in honor of the late Supervisor Roy Wilson, who supported the project and helped facilitate the project through the county. “Supervisor Wilson’s vision and tireless dedication initiated and made this development possible,” said Dan Horn, President and CEO of Palm Communities. “I was able to share in Roy’s vision because my father, Dana

Horn, instilled in me the same intense desire to provide safe and decent affordable housing for those most in need.” The former Redevelopment Agency for the County of Riverside contributed $7.3 million toward the $24.4 million total project cost. Approximately $1.6 million came from the Mental Health Services Act. The Riverside County Department of Mental Health’s Homeless/Housing, Opportunities Partnership and Education Program will serve clients in 15 units of supportive

housing. The project began construction in March 2011 and was completed and fully leased by May 31, 2012. The project’s environmental design incorporated energy and water saving systems and nontoxic building materials. Architectural features include stone veneers, tile roofs, varied stucco finishes, articulated entries and architectural projections. Tours and refreshments will be available after the ceremony.
