Palm Springs held its annual Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival last weekend. On Friday Nov. 2 awards were given to many people for their efforts for equality and volunteerism. One hundred and twentyeight performers entertained on seven stages at Sunrise Park and downtown Palm Springs. where an exhibit of an air bag and vehicles; and the Public Safety Academy (PSA) where the children were able to interact with representatives from CAL FIRE, Palm Desert’s Citizens on Patrol, a California Highway Patrol Unit and a PSA Module II student. Presentations at each location visit lasted about 15 minutes with a ‘hands-on’ approach. They finished the tour at the Public Safety Academy where the children ate their own

Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade, Sunday, Nov. 11. The Veterans Day Parade, which is always a powerful and poignant event, pays tribute to those who have served to protect our freedoms. The parade kicks off at 3:30 p.m. on Palm Canyon Drive at Ramon Road and heads north on Palm Canyon, concluding at Alejo. This year’s
parade will pay special tribute to the late Agua Caliente Tribal Chairman Richard M. Milanovich, a veteran of the United States Army, who passed away earlier this year. The theme is “Honoring All Who Served.” For the fourth year in a row, the Veterans Day National Committee of the Jump to page 23

It was hosted by Heather Coladonato, Chief Executive Officer of the Desert Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce and Patrick Evans, KPSP local Channel 2 meteorologist. After opening remarks by DHS Mayor Yvonne Parks special guest Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley spoke. The boxing champion owns and operates a tire business in Desert Hot Springs. The bulk of the morning was a tour of the city via bus, led by Councilmember Scott
Matas and Mayor Pro Tem Jan Pye. Two stops were made along the way: first to tour the new Health and Wellness Center, the second for a close up look at a local spa. Upon return from the tour, guests were treated to lunch, followed by economic updates given by four special speakers. LocalSTAR Community Police Indio Public Safety Academy Graduation Awards Ceremony
DHS Mayor Yvonne Parks and City Manager Rick Daniels presents certificates The Desert Hot Springs Police Department and the City presented certificates of completion to 19 residents at the seventh Community Police Academy on Monday Oct. 29. The eight week class met on Monday nights for three hours at the Henry V. Lozano Community Center at Guy J. Tedesco Park and culminated with a potluck attended by alumni, city staff, and police personnel. The Academy is part of the department’s C o m m u n i t y Po l i c i n g Initiative and is designed to provide an in-depth look at department practices, personnel, and the criminal justice system. Students will meet and interact with staff including the Chief of Police, Operations
and Administrative Commanders, Sergeants, Patrol Officers, Special E n fo rc e m e n t Te a m s , Detectives, Crime Scene I nve st i ga to r s , C r i m e P reve n t i o n O f f i c e r s , Dispatchers, and representatives from the District Attorney’s office. Many topics are discussed and include Community Policing, Use of Force, Narcotics, Gangs, Patrol Operations, Parolees, Criminal Prosecution (what happens after the arrest), Crime Scene Investigation, Department Weapons, and Police Academy life to name a few. A station tour and ride along with an officer is also encouraged. We believe that the Community Police Academy
provides an invaluable opportunity for residents, city and police staff, to come together and create a rapport, build relationships, and put a name and face to who might otherwise have been a phone call. In this way the relationship becomes more personal and strengthens the resolve to work together on community issues. The Academy is open to adult residents of DHS and surrounding county areas; 16-17 year olds may attend with a parent or legal guardian. We encourage residents to sign up for our next class which runs Tuesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. starting March 5, 2013 and ends April 23, 2013. Applications are due three weeks prior to the start date. As class size is limited please submit your applications early. Tiara Jones Recognized for Public Safety
Tiara Jones was recognized by DHS PD Sgt. Guerrero for her public safety. Jones was on Hacienda Drive when
she witnessed a hit and run car accident. She called 911, responded to the victim and kept him calm while help arrived.
In addition, during an interview by Sgt. Guerrero, Jones provided good descriptions of the car that had left the scene. She is in our Public Safety Academy at DHSHS. Sgt. Guerrero said that when he asked her why she had responded so appropriately, it was because of the training she’d been receiving in the PSA. We are very proud of her,” said DHS HS Principal Anne Kalisek, Ed.D.

On November 2, 2012, at approximately 2212 hours, Officers from the Desert Hot Springs Police Department located a stolen vehicle and subsequently went in pursuit when the driver failed to yield in the area of Two Bunch Palms Trail and Verbena Drive. The vehicle had been previously reported stolen to the San Bernardino Police Department earlier in the day. The vehicle entered the desert area north of Two Bunch Palm Trail and west of Cholla Drive. With the assistance of several allied agencies, the investigation lead to the arrest of Steven Padilla. The investigation is on-going to determine if Padilla has been involved in several similar incidents involving Coachella Valley law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator Steinhaus at (760) 329-2904 X 331 or the Coachella Valley Crime Stoppers if they wish to remain anonymous at (760) 341-STOP (7867). Padilla was subsequently booked at the Riverside County Jail in Banning with the above mentioned charges.

I can’t help but laugh when I see an orange juice (OJ) commercial on TV. The 30 second spot usually begins with a shot of a married couple waking up from a restful nights sleep. They stretch, smile, and get out of bed. The next scene is from their back yard patio pouring cold OJ into fine crystal glasses. They are looking into a meadow with a beautiful trout filled stream running through it, and a mare and her foal galloping across the field. There are a lot of chirping birds in the background singing away. The last frames are of them drinking their OJ and heading off to work in their BMW’s. I can buy into that vision. I’m sure it happens like that somewhere and where it does, good for them. But here is the more likely scenario. The alarm rings. It’s 6 a.m. A dad gets out of bed alone. His wife is not home yet. She’s working the grave yard shift at the factory and has two more hours before she clocks out. The dad has three kids to get ready for school, has to make breakfast and get himself ready for his job as the sales manager at a new car dealership. Sales have been slow lately because so many good folks lost their credit during the Great Recession and can’t qualify for a new car loan. He’s behind on his bills and the Regional Director is pressuring him to meet this month’s sales quota. To put it mildly, he is under a mountain of stress. But he decides to make a choice on how the day will unfold.
He starts his day with enthusiasm and the belief that everything will be okay. He sits down with the kids for their morning meal, he pours them fresh OJ, and says a prayer. “Lord, thank you for this meal we are about to receive, and thank you for the blessings our family enjoys in this great country of America.” A few minutes later, the school bus shows up and the kids climb aboard; dad drives 25 minutes to go 10 miles. But it doesn’t bother him a bit. It’s a sunshine kind of day in his mind. Here’s the point: Television gives us an image they would like us to believe - the moms and dads in the world live in a completely different reality. It’s a reality of hard work, choosing which bills to pay, and wondering in some cases if they’ll have jobs six months from now. Elvis sang a song with this line:“The man who can sing when he doesn’t have a thing is the King of the whole wide world.” When faced with problems and challenges, we as humans have a free will to make choices. The choices we make can affect every aspect of our business and personal lives. Do we make a

Another favorite true story of mine is that of Carrie Underwood. In 2005, she heard auditions for “American Idol” were being held in St. Louis, Missouri. She and her mother drove nine hours from their farm home in Oklahoma where Underwood used to sing to the livestock. Upon arriving, Underwood saw 35,000 other signers waiting to try out. She said to her mother that there was no way she could possibly be chosen and they should just turn around and head back to Oklahoma. Her mother, having faced and overcome her own trials in life, said she had to at least try so she would never wonder “what if?”

By Frances Allen Festival of Lights Parade What’s billed as the “biggest holiday event in the Coachella Valley,” attracting residents and tourists alike? According to local hoteliers it’s the annual Festival of Lights Parade, this year to be held in downtown Palm Springs on Dec. 1. The parade starts at 5:45 p.m. and begins at Palm Canyon Drive and Ramon Road, ending at Tamarisk Road. Legendary movie producer Jerry Weintraub will serve as Grand Marshall of the parade, while a new position, that of the parade’s Guardian Angel, was created for local community leader and philanthropist, Helene Galen. Special attractions of the parade this year will be holyday-themed floats, giant Macy’s-style balloons along with ol’ Saint Nick and his reindeer riding aboard the Jackie Lee Houston Santa Clause Express, in honor of the woman who, throughout the years, made so many days seem like Christmas for so many people.
Les Dames du Soleil Most readers know what it’s like when the kids turn 18. They want to go out into the world and try to make it on their own, leaving behind an empty nest or at least an empty bedroom with closets containing the remnants of clothes worn in a bygone era. It’s enough to get some adults all chocked up. Sadly, that’s the way it was earlier this month when, after 18 years, the Valley’s much-loved drag troupe, Les Dames du Soleil, gave their final performance. Founded nearly a

generation ago by two successful businessmen, Marshall Pearcy (who performed under the stagename Dottie DuBois) and Douglas Woodmansee (better known as Maude Chapeau), the Dames raised nearly $2 million for charity by their performances in clubs, or just serving as “greeters” at Desert gals events with their brand of humorous, tasteful, drag entertainment. It all began as a ‘party
act’ engaged in by Pearcy and Woodmansee, but the founders wanted to give back to the Desert - an area they found so personally welcoming - and they expanded their troupe to include other talented performers, such as local caterer and chef Aturo Montes (Rita Del Taco) and Al Johnson (Lisa Karr), who lip-synced to the music of anyone, from pop singers to operatic divas. Starting from small beginnings, Les Dames made Desert Aids Project the principle beneficiary of their performances, raising more than $1 million for that group, alone. However, other charities were not forgotten, and Les Dames raised nearly $1 million for various Desert children and animal charities. It was truly a labor of love. Each Dame paid their own expenses, from

designing and sewing their elaborate costumes to paying for gas to get to the varying performances. Every dime went to the charity being supported. Les Dames final event was held before a packed ballroom of the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Palm Springs. Here guests stuffed paper money down the
dresses and waistbands of the performers all in an effort to raise a minimum amount of $100,000; the amount that Tim Hanlon, president of the Wells Fargo Foundation, had promised to match dollarfor-dollar, raised at the event. (I have it on good authority that the bank balance of the Wells Fargo Foundation is about $100,000 less today than it was a few days ago). It was a bittersweet evening, driven home by the entire cast as they repeatedly turned their backs to the audience as they performed the final song, “Stop, In The Name of Love,” signifying that Les Dames were truly their wit’s end. HIV/AIDS is often thought of a male-borne disease, but 10 percent of the nearly 2,200 clients of Desert AIDS Project (DAP) are women who face different needs than male patients
in dealing with the physical and emotional affects of the disease. Plus, women are often more reluctant to acknowledge that they have HIV, especially when children are involved. To meet this need, DAP has inaugurated “100 Woman,” a donor program devoted to raising money for the needs of women and children affected in some way by HIV. Currently DAP women’s program has 73 members, each of whom give at least $1,500 per year to the program. But, while this is a sizable amount for some people, you can benefit the 100 Women program, and yourself, by shopping at Desert AIDS Projects chain of Revivals thrift shops throughout the Valley. Not only will you find bargains, by shopping at a Revivals you will also be contributing to nearly 25 percent of DAP’s total funding. This year also marks the second-annual DAPpresented “Dancing with the Desert Stars,” to be held on Nov. 16 at the Renaissance Hotel in Palm Springs. The event, hosted by Desertliving John Barrowman, star of television’s “Arrow” and “Torchwood,” will have local residents and ‘professional’ partners vying for recognition as the Desert’s best dancers. Benefits Local Pet Shelter Great Autos of Yesteryear
Cathedral City, CA - Blue skies and sunshine greeted all visitors to the Doral Resort last weekend when Great Autos of Yesteryear put on its annual car show to benefit the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. For the second year, car enthusiasts have chosen the new animal shelter to receive proceeds from the show, as well as the raffle of a 1973 Ford Thunderbird. The automobile was donated by a member of the car group; last year’s winner even donated the vehicle back to the shelter, which was then auctioned off by McCormick’s auto auction at the Agua Caliente Casino. The show featured more than 70 different cars such as a 1914 Ford Model-T and a 2008 Bentley Brooklands Coupe. A large part of the show featured cars form the 1950s through the mid-1970s. More than 1,000 people toured the emerald green golf course. The Doral hosted the event for the first time and the crowd agreed by measure of their applause, when asked by Palm Springs Mayor Pro Tem Ginny Foat about the move. The show was open to the public and cost $10. If you missed it this year, watch out for 2013!

Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph” A Smash Hit At The Box Office Disney’s animated comedy adventure “WreckIt Ralph” was a smash hit this past weekend, breaking box office records by earning $49.1 million in just three days. Wow! It has also become a darling with the critics. They also try to comfort themselves by affirming “bad is good.“ Like “Toy Story,” the game characters have a life of their own when the Arcade closes for the night and no humans are around. After hours they can step outside of their game boxes
and enter into the empty Arcade via “Game Central Station” for a change of pace. For 30 years Ralph has been demolishing a big high rise building by day, then leading a lonely life after hours. is a hero at heart. To do this, Ralph enters another game box in order to win a medal to gain peer acceptance. The next game we encounter is a macho warstyled game called “Hero’s Duty” where Ralph hopes to win a gold medal for bravery. Here he meets Sergeant Calhoun (voiced by Jane Lynch of TV’s “Glee”) who looks super sexy, but she is tough as nails. He is able to win a medal, but unleashes a super computer bug in the process. When he runs off with his medal, he is followed by Calhoun in hot pursuit. To escapes from the “Hero Duty” game with his prize, Ralph dashes into the “Sugar Rush” computer box, a game, filled with all sorts of sweets and confections where a big race to the finish takes place over and over every day. Soon soft-hearted Ralph runs into a little computer glitch named Vanellope Von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman), a pixilated outcast in her game world and eventually they become reluctant friends and allies. If you were an Arcade game player in your youth, you will recognize the historic characters from vintage games, but even if you are not, the story will make sense. There is a sweetness to the plight of both Ralph and spirited Vanellope, who just wants to race like the other little gals in her game. In a non-preachy way, the story explores the

Paint the Plane Contest Readers of this column have probably noticed that I am a fan of tail art, the term used to describe the distinguishing designs or images that are painted on a commercial jetliner’s tail. It’s a way for carriers to distinguish themselves and is more common with smaller, foreign airlines – two notable U.S. exceptions being Alaska and Frontier Airlines. A few weeks ago, we featured Alaska’s Boeing 737 painted as a giant salmon. Now, Alaska Airlines, which services Palm Springs, is at it again. This time the airline has appointed a panel of 10 judges for its statewide “Paint the Plane” contest, an event that invites Hawaiian schoolchildren to create artwork honoring the unique culture of the Aloha State that may adorn a 737. Why an airplane dedicated to the Aloha Spirit? Alaska flies to Hawaii from the mainland, and its great advertising. The student with the winning submission will have his or her design painted on an Alaska Airlines aircraft, a trip for four to any of the airline’s destinations and a $5,000 scholarship. While there is a chance that Palm Springs travelers may catch a glimpse of the new Hawaiian-themed Alaska Airlines airplane, it is unlikely (unless you are at LAX) that we will see the uniquely-painted Boeing 777-300ER recently delivered to Air China. Given the fuselage-name of “Smiling China,” the new aircraft – the tenth B777-300ER in Air China’s fleet – marks the 40th anniversary of Boeing’s entry into the Chinese aircraft market and features 40 Chinese smiling faces on its rear fuselage. The livery is meant to carry the message that China is a confident, sincere, friendly and optimistic country in which to do business. Of the 40 chosen faces, 20 are employers of Air China, while the other 20 are globaltraveling passengers.
“Know Me” Program British Airways, the flag carrier of the home of the bespoke suit, is now claiming that BA will offer bespoke passenger service before, during and after a flight. However, some may think that is not such a good thing, and here’s why. The airline is launching a new computer-based program known as “Know Me.” According to airline officials, the program was developed over the past several years; its purpose, to collate a wealth of data from every experience a customer has with the airline. The program is able to send customer-specific information about anyone in the system to anyone who has access to the system. Not only will the system enable the crew to feed back information about their most loyal passengers, enabling the airline to further personalize the service they receive on their next trip, the system has some scary features as well, such as enabling employees to search Google Images for a photo of specific customers so they can recognize them as soon as they enter the airport or aircraft and “proactively” approach them. According to Jo Boswell, head of customer analysis at British Airways, “This is just the start though – the system has a myriad of possibilities for the future.” That, Ms Boswell, is exactly the basis of our concern.

This is perhaps one of the most misunderstood questions we will face during our lifetime. A Google search yielded more than 11 million results. It’s obviously something that has a lot of interest. Social Security (SS) is a tad complicated. There are actually 2,728 rules in the SS Handbook. Are they serious? Many folks are already retired so this is a non-issue for them, right? Well, not so fast. You are allowed to start, stop, and then restart your benefits. That means existing beneficiaries may want to consider a change. Please understand this is a complex decision that hinges on many variables and every situation is different. If you start to draw benefits early and are married, you may get hit with a larger than normal penalty because your spouse’s benefits will be reduced for their lifetime. If you are still working and will lose part of your Social Security benefits because you exceed the earnings threshold ($14,640 in 2012), then you probably should wait to start taking your benefits. You will lose $1 dollar in benefits for every $2 you earn in excess of that amount. If you start to draw benefits early, you will lose from 20 percent to 30 percent of your higher benefit amount compared to waiting until later in life. If you calculate that impact on a spouse’s benefit, the reduction can
become much larger. So you have to be careful. Your benefit is calculated on your 35 highest average years of income. If you work less than 35 years, those years will be credited with zero earnings and it will lower your SS benefit. Some people can work a little longer and replace zero or lower income years to help boost the calculation. Please know too that if you are receiving a state or federal
pension, your SS benefits will likely be offset so that has to be considered. The one area that I have never seen addressed with on-line SS calculators or in articles giving you advice on what to do, is if you postpone your start date until later and have to spend money that you’ve saved for retirement, what about the opportunity loss on the money that you spent from your personal savings? What if a married client can receive a benefit of

By Kevin Powell $1,811 at age 62 or a higher benefit of $2,499 at age 66 or their normal retirement age (NRA)? What should they do? What if they return to work at some point. If that client started drawing their benefits at age 62, they would receive $86,928 over the next four years. If we divide that amount by the extra money they will get at age 66 for their life ($688 monthly) you get about 10.5 years. That means if this client lives for at least 10.5 years or to age 76.5, they would have been better off waiting to start drawing benefits. However, we have to consider that if this client waits until age 66 to start benefits, they will spend $86,928 from their savings. That money will be lost forever and won’t continue to grow for their future needs. Being extremely conservative, $86,928 at a four percent appreciation rate for roughly 17 years (average life expectancy of 79), amounts to a loss of $169,327. If we divide that by the difference in monthly benefits ($688), then this client’s break-even is pushed out to 20.5 years. That means they’d have to live to age 86.5; much longer than life expectancy to break-even by waiting to start their benefits.
If the client had to draw this money from their retirement accounts and they were in a 30 percent combined tax bracket, their losses would be even higher. If we increase the $86,928 of lost capital by roughly 30 percent to account for taxes, then the potential loss swells to more than $113,000. $113,000 invested at four percent for 17 years swells to $220,112 and the break-even point is a whopping 26.6 years or this client would have to live to age 92.5 to make waiting a good decision. This is an understated scenario because I believe the client should earn more than four percent on their investment returns over 17 – 26 years. Plus who knows what Social Security will look like in 20 plus years. If this client were to return to work, they could start, stop and then restart their benefits at a higher amount later in life. That’s one reason why this decision is not a onetime issue for everyone. This is not a decision of a few hundred dollars every month. It’s a decision of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Be sure you review all options to insure you make the best decision possible for your situation. Ivan Flowers By Jackie Devereaux LA QUINTA, CA – Dining out offers numerous choices for residents and visitors to the Coachella Valley. Which restaurant to choose? What cuisine? There are so many choices for hungry diners in every cuisine imaginable. One of the Valley’s newest five-star chefs, Ivan Flowers, exclusively shared with us where he goes to eat when he has a chance to break away from his kitchen at the Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant in La Quinta. “A couple of weeks ago I had such a craving for Chicken Parmesan, I was desperate for it! I was on a quest to find some and I stumbled upon a really great place called Chapelli’s in La Quinta. Chef Flowers tells a funny story about how he stumbled upon this particular restaurant. “It is close to the (Arnold Palmer’s) restaurant and right next to the Ralph’s where my wife, Trixie, shops. From the outside, it is very non-descript - just a small patio and a sign. I mean, really, it is situated between a hair salon and a supermarket in a strip mall. One day, my wife decided to poke her head in and she came home and said, ‘We have to eat at that little place. It is really different inside and when you walk in, you smell garlic!” She had me at garlic.” “My wife was right, but then she usually is. It is very different inside. Chapelli’s is a good case for ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover.’ When you first walk in, there is a wall and yes, the wonderful aroma of garlic hits you

when a restaurant serves ice cold butter with bread. Room temperature butter tells me that there is attention to detail. The charcuterie plate had salami, prosciutto and shaved Parmesan. Trixie is all about the bread and was in heaven. “My wife and I started with the Caprese Flatbread. It had ripe fresh tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, basil and shaved Parmesan. The crust was a little thicker than most flatbreads I have eaten, but it had a nice chew and flavor. My wife was giddy when they brought it and also used it on her bread. “For our entrees, I had, I am sure you can guess, the Chicken Parmigiana and Trixie had the Angel Hair Pomodoro (one of her favorites). Both
of our entrees came with our choice of soup or house salad and bread pudding. We both wanted the salad and ordered it with creamy Italian dressing. It was a very nice little salad. Crisp, chilled lettuce, nice amount of vegetables and just the right amount of dressing. We both ate every bit of it. Then, the moment I had been waiting for, the Chicken Parmigiana. The dish had two nice sized pieces of perfectly cooked chicken. Breaded, fried and topped with marinara sauce and cheese. It is served with a side of linguini with the same red sauce. This dish is prepared in the way I remember eating it growing up in New York: Simply great chicken, sauce and cheese. Every bite reminded me of home. The linguine was perfectly al dente and went nicely with the chicken. I must note here, that they have little bowls of freshly grated Parmesan on every table. For cheese lovers like my wife and I, this goes a long way. I think between the flatbread, our salads and our entrees, we just about used the entire bowl. Trixie loved her Angel Hair Pomodoro. With angel hair pasta, there is always the chance that it can become overcooked or served stuck together in one big lump. Not here, al dente, with the skinny strands of pasta beautifully separate in the dish. Pomodoro sauce, as a rule, is very light and simple, just tomatoes, olive oil, basil and garlic. My wife took one bite of her dish and said, “You have to try this!” That always means it is very good. And it was, I sometimes find Pomodoro sauces unseasoned, but this had a nice salty finish. “They have a full bar as well as a nice wine list. Both my wife and I had a glass of the Edmeades Zinfandel with nice forward fruit and a balanced finish. It was a perfect complement to our meal. It had enough fruit and body to stand up to the tomato based sauces without overwhelming them. “The bread pudding was a nice sweet finish to the meal. I must say a word about the service. It was

Friends and family attended to witness this unveiling and thank Casey and Altieri for their dedicated support for DAP. INDIAN WELLS, CA- Pulitzer prize winner Robert Maisse launched the 12th season of Desert Literary Society. The group, sponsored by Northern Trust Bank, hosts its luncheons at the Esmerelda Hotel in Indian Wells six times a year. The organization also supports local libraries and scholarships for students with promising futures as writers. Maisse’s latest book,” Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman,” focuses on the woman from youth to her final days as one of Russia’s greatest leaders. Maisse’s previous book on Peter the Great was awarded the Pulitzer in 1981. Nearly 30 0 guests listened intently as Maisse shared his insights on the royal court and how he conducts background research for his books. In addition to the lively discussion, Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs Mayors were on hand as Librarians from each city received a donation toward its collection. This chapter of the California Literary and Prologue Society is run from Northern Trust’s Newport office, which is headed by Gary Van Ahrm.

When you want to attract money or accomplish new goals, including living longer, you may find that your negative feelings about yourself are often your worst enemy. Do you freeze up during job interviews or meetings with investors because you aren’t sure you deserve more money? Does a general feeling of inadequacy hold you back from taking action toward new goals? To rid yourself of the negative feelings that limit future accomplishments, it’s useful to begin by identifying the specific feelings that come and go in your mind. I have found that “The Sedona Method,” a book by Hale Dwoskin, does an excellent job of identifying six common and important negative feelings plus three positive feelings that matter. APATHY: When we experience apathy, we feel as though desire is dead. We can’t do anything and no one else can help. We withdraw and play weak so we won’t get hurt. We only see failure. We have little or no energy. GRIEF: We cry out in pain hoping that someone else will solve the problem for us. Our bodies have a little more energy than in apathy. Our thoughts and internal pictures revolve around how much we hurt, what we have lost and whether we can get anyone else to help us. FEAR: We want to reach out but do not because we think we’ll get hurt, the risk is too great. Our bodies have a little more energy than in grief but still mostly painful. Feelings can rise and fall very rapidly, like cool water on a hot skillet. Our pictures and thoughts are about doom and destruction. All we can think of and see is how we will get hurt, what we may lose and how we must protect ourselves.

PAINTED HILLS WORLD RECORD SPORT STACKING Painted Hills Middle School in Desert Hot Springs will take part in what Guinness World Records terms the “World’s Largest Sport Stacking Event,” on Nov. 15 from 2-3 p.m., at Painted Hills Middle School located at 9250 Sonora Dr. in Desert Hot Springs. Sport stackers from all reaches of the world will be stacking various pyramids in lightning speed for 30 minutes. HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF CONCERT Rancho Mirage – The Stadium House in Rancho Mirage will be offering a variety of ways for the Valley to donate and support relief efforts for those suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy on Monday, Nov. 12 (Veterans’ Day Observed). A Day In The Life Of Tab Hunter Rancho Mirage, CA – On Wednesday, Nov. 14, the award-winning, Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre, again invites the public to one of its incomparable, upclose and personal Luminary Luncheons, featuring the one time “Golden Boy” of Hollywood, Tab Hunter. Discovered at 19, Hunter grew to be not only a star of film, television and the stage, but talented author, recording artist, and in his personal life, a horseman who rode, showed hunters and jumpers, judged and gave riding clinics. Hunter said, “The horses were my touch of reality in the unrealistic world of Hollywood.” Today, he still rides his current mare, Harlow.” The luncheon and interview with Hunter
will take place at the CV Rep Theatre in The Atrium on Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage. Hunter’s first starring role, at the tender age of 19, was opposite Linda Darnell in the romantic South Seas adventure “Island of Desire.” An instant success, Hunter went on to star in over 40 major motion pictures, including Battle Cry, The Pleasure of His Company, The Loved One, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, and the Academy Award-nominated Damn Yankees. Hunter’s recording career culminated with “Young Love,” one of the top records of the rock and roll era. It zoomed to Number One on the charts worldwide (knocking Elvis out of the top spot) where it remained for six weeks. Hunter

Silver Anniversary At McCallum Theatre PALM DESERT, CA — When the McCallum Theatre opened its doors in January 1988, seven volunteer ushers were part of a team welcoming patrons to the new stateof-the-art performing arts center. Twenty-five years later, these seven ushers continue to welcome patrons to the Theatre. Soroptimists Seeking Applicants PALM SPRINGS – The Coachella Valley’s four Soroptimist International clubs are seeking candidates for their annual Women’s Opportunity and Violet Richardson Awards recognition program. Winners will be honored and presented with their cash awards at a reception in March. The Women’s Opportunity Award provides assistance to women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families and are seeking to gain additional education and skills to advance their status. Four awardees will each receive $1800. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women, ages 14 to 17, who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. Four awardees will each receive $300, and the volunteer organizations they serve will receive at least $200 each. Deadline for the Violent Richardson Award applications is Dec. 1. held on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. with nearly 20,000 people came early to find the right spot to watch the parade. The parade started at Ramon Road and ended at Tamarisk Road. The parade theme this year was “Long May It Wave.” Men, women, children
and even pets came early to find the right spot to watch. Bands, floats, elaborate costumes, horses, pets, walkers and dancers were part of the parade. Exotic vintage cars held celebrities and award honorees while members of the parade handed out beads, leis and other memorabilia. People from far and wide came to witness this once a year event.
