Edito r’s View Dear Readers, Once again, it is a proud moment for all Indians and Indian Americans! Of the 12 finalists in the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee, 10 participants were Indian-Americans. The winner was Harini Logan, a 14-year-old Indian American girl from San Antonio,Texas. Social media and mainstream media in the US are trying to figure out why Indian Americans are winning every time. So called “experts” are offering their opinions on social media platforms, newspapers, and TV. Everyone is missing simple reasons, or they simply do not want to accept those reasons. The simple reasons boil down to hard work, practice, and parents’ involvement. This is not only for spelling bee competitions, but it also applies to many other fields whether it is their studies, sports, or music competitions. In the past issue of Desh-Videsh, whenever we have covered spelling bee winners, we have listed all valedictorians and salutatorians in the US along with their picture and other personal details. This time there are so many Indian Americans at the top of their class who have become valedictorian or salutatorian that if we were to include all of them, half of DeshVidesh would be full of their details. This is why we have decided to put it on our website. Please check out all of these top students on our website: https://bit.ly/3ntz8cU Now, let me talk about a legend in Music, A.R. Rahman. The Oscar-winning Indian music composer A.R. Rahman is performing all over the USA. A prodigy with music in his genes, he is the exceptional talent that has made Indian music rich and versatile. He successfully integrated Indian classical music with Western Classical music and Western instruments to create tunes that were one-of-a-kind and never heard before. We have listed all his shows in Community News. Tickets are going fast. Go out and reserve your seat. The issue of Desh-Videsh will not be complete until I talk about my modern day hero, Hon. PM Modi. As you know Hon. PM Modi has completed eight years of successful governance of India. Desh-Videsh is coming out with a Special Edition on PM Modi, highlighting Modi and his administration’s achievements over the past eight years. In this issue, we are covering one such achievement. Over the last eight years, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has been instrumental in bringing Treasures of India, 200 stolen artifacts or antiquities worth millions of dollars back to India from across the world. Speaking of Treasures of India, Chahna has written a very good article on Preserving Our Roots and Ancient Knowledge. Be sure to check it out. As we all know for Indians, cricket is another religion. In Florida, there are several cricket teams. In this issue, we have included an article written by Tilak Mitra talking about the team he co-founded named Young Genius Cricketer’s Academy. In the next issue of Desh-Videsh, we will cover another such cricket team founded by Sanjay Paharia named Friendship Cup. After cricket, the second activity Indians love is Bollywood. In the Bollywood section, we have listed all IIFA’s (International Indian Film Academy Awards) 2022 Winners. I am not sure whether some of you have noticed or not, but these days, Indians living all over the world enjoy movies based on Indian history and achievements of Indians in the variety of fields such as sports or politics. Looking at IIFA winners such as Shershaah and 83 movies attest to this phenomena. In this issue, Immigration attorney Seth Finberg is talking about O-1 visas for persons of extraordinary ability. As we all know, Indians living in India or living in the US have extraordinary ability either in academia and/or business. Not too many people know about this type of Visa. I hope some of you can take advantage of this O-1 Visa. Last, but not least, we are announcing our Orlando show on August 28 at the same venue, Hilton Orlando. I hope and pray that this time we will not encounter any problems. So many of you have shown such great support for so many years of every activity Desh-Videsh has done. This time we hope we will get the same type of support. Until then, Be Healthy! Be safe! Raj Shah Managing Editor

Oscar-Winning Music Composer A.R. Rahman Performing in the US

A

prodigy with music in his genes, A.R. Rahman is an exceptional talent who has made Indian music rich and versatile. He successfully integrated Indian classical music with Western classical music and western instruments to create tunes that were unique and never heard before. His music creates an everlasting impression on the minds of the audience — the magic that makes everyone mesmerized. After 30 years of making music for films, Rahman’s fans are still captivated by his creative genius. Allah Rakha Rahman was born on January 6, 1967, into a family of musicians. His father was a composer and conductor for Tamil and Malayalam films. Rahman started showing his talent as a young child by playing the piano at the age of four! He began assisting his father by playing the keyboard. However, he lost his father at nine years old and had to take up the responsibilities of the family, but his passion for music never left him. In fact, he decided to drop out of school and focus on music as his full-time career. Rahman honed his skills with several bands. He was a keyboard player and music arranger for The Roots. He founded the rock group Nemesis Avenue in Chennai. Gradually, he gained expertise in playing the keyboard, piano, synthesizer, harmonium, and guitar. Rahman was especially fond of the synthesizer, because to him, it was the perfect blend of music and technology. This love and fascination paved the way for his innovative music in his later years. He had worked with eminent Indian composers, such as M.S. Viswanathan, Vijaya Bhaskar, Ilaiyaraaja, Ramesh Naidu, Vijay Anand, Hamsalekha, and many others. He accompanied Zakir

Hussain and other musicians on world tours and received a scholarship from Trinity College London to the Trinity College of Music, receiving a diploma in Western classical music. Rahman is also skilled in Carnatic music, Hindustani music, and Qawwali. This versatile training and orientation has made him a prominent and prolific composer. In the early years of his career, Rahman composed music for documentaries and advertisement jingles. All these experiences added to his quest for innovation. Finally, in 1992, he was approached by director Mani Ratnam to compose songs for his Tamil movie Roja. The songs of

Roja were instant hits, and Rahman was awarded the National Film Award for best music composer. It was followed by several hit songs in Tamil films composed by him. His journey in Bollywood began with the Ram Gopal Varma-directed film Rangeela. Bollywood heartily welcomed its new talent and was overjoyed with his ground-breaking compositions. The journey of successful melodies continued with films like Dil Se.., Taal, Lagaan, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Swades, Rang De Basanti, Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar, and many more. Rahman’s talents were able to reach the international musical world. His composition “Jai Ho” in Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire (2008) brought him international accolades. He received both a Golden Globe and Academy Award for best score, a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for best music, Grammy Awards in 2010 for best soundtrack, and “Jai Ho” was again honored as best song. His composition “Vande Mataram” on the 50th Anniversary of Indian Independence in 1997 is still regarded as one of the best compositions and among the best-selling non-film albums of all time. It was followed by his album Jana Gana Mana, a

Apart from music, Rahman is also involved in several philanthropic activities, including many where he helps people affected by disasters as well as socially and economically disadvantaged children. He sang the song “Maa Tujhe Salaam,” meaning “Mother, I salute you” in paying tribute to the nation. The nation, too, is proud of her son and his unmatched talent and we all salute him for making the nation proud.

The most popular trophy of spelling bee competitions has been going to Indian-American kids for more than 20 years. Like many previous years, this year, too, it was Harini Logan, a 14-year-old middle school student from Texas, who became the champion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition, defeating 234 spellers from all parts of the USA.

The remaining 11 finalists included: Sahasrad Sathish from Illinois, Ekansh Rastogi from Florida, Vikram Raju from Colorado, Abhilash Patel from New York, Sahana Srikanth from Ohio, Nitya Kathiravan from New Jersey, Vihaan Sibal from Texas, Saharsh Vuppala from Washington, and Shijay Sivakumar from Texas. The competition was suspended for the last couple of years due to the Covid pandemic. This year it took place in a new format, with preliminary rounds online and the final round taking place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida on June 2, 2022. The winner was decided through a spell-off — the first of its kind in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Harini spelled 21 of the 26 words in the stipulated 90 seconds in the final round. The 8th grade student from Montessori School of San Antonio expressed her overwhelming joy at the achievement. She received a trophy and cash prize worth $50,000 as the winner. Vikram Raju, a 12-year-old student from Denver, Colorado, finished second and took home $25,000. In third place was 13-year-old Vihaan Sibal from Texas receiving $15,000, followed by another 13-year-old Saharsh Vuppala from Washington receiving $10,000, and one more 13-year-old Surya Kapu from Utah who placed fifth and received $5,000. For Harini, it was her fourth time participating in the competition. Harini placed 31st in 2021, 30th in 2019, and 323rd in 2018. It’s been quite a journey for this avid reader who did not give up after failing to make it to the finals in three prior appearances. Harini received congratulations from a variety of people and places, including US Surgeon General Dr.

Vivek Murthy, an Indian American raised in South Florida, who tweeted, “Congratulations Harini! Thus, she was eliminated from the competition. “My heart stopped for a second,” Harini said. A few minutes later, the judges decided to change their decision. The head

judge Mary Brooks explained that “The answer you gave to that word is considered correct, so we are going to reinstate you.” This put Harini back on stage with the three remaining contestants. Treasures of India:

Lost and Found BY JUHI MIRZA

O

ver the last seven years, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has been instrumental in bringing over 200 stolen artifacts or antiquities worth millions of dollars back to India from across the world while the previous UPA government was only able to bring back one stolen artifact to India in its 10 years of government.

Prime Minister Modi announced last year that an ancient statue of Devi Annapurna, stolen from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh about a century ago, is being brought back home from Canada. The statue of the goddess of food, holding a bowl of rice, is said to be an 18th-century idol carved in the Benaras style. The return of the idol is a major success story in India’s quest for its lost ancient treasures, a mission being spearheaded by PM Modi. “Every Indian will be proud to know that a very old idol of Devi Annapurna is returning to India from Canada. The coming back of the idol is pleasing for all of us. Just like the idol of Mata Annapurna, a lot of our invaluable heritage has suffered at the hands of international gangs,” the Prime Minister said.

India’s archaeological treasures have been constant victims of plundering and looting, resulting in several rare specimens of antiquity scattered throughout the world. Under the guidance of PM Modi, the initiative to bring them home has been revived and has transpired into a mission. Several programs and efforts have been initiated by authorities to procure these artifacts from all over the world. The Ministry of External Affairs, along with law enforcement agencies, has been actively pursuing the retrieval of stolen and smuggled Indian artifacts, and several pieces have been returned to India from various countries, including the US, Australia, the UK, Canada, and Germany. Here’s a look at some that have successfully found their way back home:

‘‘

Over the last few years, the United States of America has returned 178 antiquities to India. The list includes some of the finest pieces of terracotta idols belonging to various periods, along with elegant statues of religious and sentimental value. One of the most significant in this consignment is a bronze idol of Manikkavachakar, a saint who had found patronage under the Chola Dynasty (9-13th century AD). The idol had allegedly been stolen from a temple in the Sripuranthan Village in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu and smuggled into the US. The idol, worth at least a million US dollars in the open market, was recovered by American authorities in 2015 and returned. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha earlier this month, the Ministry of Culture said that in total, nine antiquities or artifacts were repatriated to India from Australia,

two from Canada, eight from the UK, and one each from Germany and Singapore. Another important idol returned by the USA is an idol of Manjusri, a Bodhisattva associated with Mahayana Buddhism. Dating back to the 12th century, the idol depicts Manjusri holding a sword and a lotus in his hands, and is painted in gold leaf. It has immense significance in the history of Buddhism, with the sword symbolizing the Bodhisattva’s intent to cut or remove the fog of illusion and bring forth light. The idol also denotes wisdom and is highly revered in the Indian and Buddhist pantheons. The statue was allegedly stolen from a temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, in the late 1980s. It was repatriated in 2018 from the Auckland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina.

JUST LIKE THE IDOL OF MATA ANNAPURNA, A LOT OF OUR INVALUABLE HERITAGE HAS SUFFERED AT THE HANDS OF INTERNATIONAL GANGS. THESE GANGS SELL THEM AT A VERY HIGH PRICE IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET. NOW NOT ONLY ARE THEY BEING SUBJECTED TO HEAVY RESTRICTIONS; INDIA HAS ALSO INCREASED HER EFFORTS FOR THEIR RETURN. BECAUSE OF SUCH EFFORTS, INDIA HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN BRINGING BACK LOTS OF SUCH IDOLS AND ARTIFACTS IN THE PAST FEW YEARS. Narendra Modi Prime Minister of India

Along with the idol of Manjusri, a granite phallus idol of Lord Shiva was also returned. The iconic Shiva Linga dates back to the 12th century and traces its origin to the Chola Dynasty rulers of Southern India. Carved in accordance with the laws of traditional iconography, the idol depicts the Lord holding a parasu, or battle axe, along with Krishna Mruga, or a deer. It was stolen from Tamil Nadu and was on display at the Birmingham Museum in Alabama. In November 2020, a set of three bronze idols of Lord Rama, Lord Lakshmana, and Goddess Sita was returned to India by authorities of the United Kingdom. These bronze idols, rich in artistic heritage and belonging to the Vijayanagar Empire (1336–1646), had been stolen in the 1970s from a temple in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district and were recovered from a private collector in London. Another valuable statue that was returned to India last year by the UK is an ancient Lord Shiva idol, which was stolen from Ghateswar Temple in Baroli,

44

Rajasthan. The idol, standing around four feet high, depicts Lord Shiva in a Chatura Nataraja pose and dates back to the 9th-10th century. It was in the possession of a private collector. The High Commission of India in London played an active role in the repatriation of this priceless piece of art. Canada, too, has returned several heritage artifacts to India in recent years. Among them is the statue of the “parrot lady,” a prized cultural representation of Indian history. The delicately carved sandstone statue of a woman holding a parrot is almost 900 years old and represents aspects of everyday life in ancient India. The sculpture that was in the possession of a private collector was returned to PM Modi by former Canadian PM Stephen Harper in 2015 during the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Canada. Among other Chola Dynasty artifacts returned to India are the bronze idols of Nataraja and Ardhanarishvara recovered in Australia. The idols date back to the 11th century AD and are regarded as some of the finest specimens of skilled bronze casting from the Chola period. Ardhanarishvara is an amalgamation of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess

Parvati in a half man-half woman form. Along with these, a stone relief of a pair of dwarpalo (mythical temple guards) had also been retrieved from Australia. Australia also returned to India a stone statue of Nagaraja (serpent king) from the 6th to 8th century period. These statues had been allegedly stolen from Indian temples. In a similar appreciable and welcoming gesture, Germany returned a piece of Indian history during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to India in 2015. The 10th-century idol of Mahishasuramardini, a form of Goddess Durga had gone missing from a temple in Kashmir over 20 years ago. Over many decades, India has lost thousands of artifacts of cultural importance. In recent years, the government of India has been assiduously working towards the repatriation of stolen art objects, and the records of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) show that the government has been

46

Artifacts of cultural significance are an integral part of Indian heritage and play an important role in defining the historical context of the country able to retrieve 40 art objects between 2014 and 2020 while an additional 7580 art objects are in the pipeline to be returned. These priceless artifacts returned to India facilitate research and analysis on their origin and antiquity that further enriches our history and culture. Dr BR Mani, former Director General of the National Museum, New Delhi, said, “Due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his emphasis on the importance of preserving national folklore and culture, returning of lost treasures and heritage exchange between nations have gained incredible momentum. This process has compelled other countries to look up to India as a cultural icon.” Such pursuit of bringing back pieces of our history and filling gaps in historical information is of the utmost

Author and international law expert Jeanette Greenfield, in her book The Return of International Treasures, writes: “UNESCO has estimated that more than 50,000 art objects were smuggled out of India over the decade 1979-1989 alone.” Importance in integrating a sense of cultural assimilation. Artifacts of cultural significance are an integral part of Indian heritage and play an important role in defining the historical context of the country. These rare antiquities have not only helped revive India’s impressive past, but have also managed to build and foster strong cultural, social, and economic ties with other countries and their people.

Remember: a) An O-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa and does not lead to a green card b) Like most employment-based visas, you still must obtain a petitioner who can be either an employer or an agent One good example of a strong O-1A applicant would be Indian cricketer Unmukt Chand, a right-handed top order batsman. Unmukt was the captain of India’s U-19 Cricket World Cup winning team and was also the “Man of the Match” for the Final. Chand rose to a level of extraordinary ability by captaining India’s first U-19 World Cup win outside of Asia. Additionally, 1) he successfully authored his memoirs in a book titled “The Sky is the Limit” (2013) and 2) did commentary for the 2020 U-19 World Cup along with commentary for the Caribbean Premier League on Star Sports 1 Hindi. If this relatively young star would be offered a cricket playing/coaching/or commentary job in the United States, he would likely merit O-1 approval with a wellprepared application.

Are you extraordinary? O-1 visas for persons of extraordinary ability I recently had a consultation with Vikram, a film director from India, who was studying advanced film production and technology in the United States. Often clients will come with a specific visa in mind. Vikram had done some research and was interested in an O-1B visa for persons of extraordinary ability in the arts (specifically the category of movies and TV). While many of my clients think they are impressive or believe they have a strong case for such visas, I rely on my experience, training, and research to help determine if they are a good candidate. Unfortunately, the USCIS definitions of “extraordinary ability” or “extraordinary achievement” were not the same as Vikram’s. Just because there were some film studios in California who were interested in his services, his career was not long enough, he had not accomplished enough, he had not earned enough, and therefore was not qualified for an O-1B visa. There are 2 classifications of O-1 visas for Individuals with Extraordinary Ability or Achievement a) O-1A for extraordinary ability in the sciences, education, business, or athletics b) O-1B for extraordinary ability in the arts (which would include

52

music) OR extraordinary achievement in the motion picture or television industry.

Advantages of an O-1 visa: 1. The approval time is relatively fast and allows for premium processing 2. An approved petition can last for up to 3 years and can generally be easily renewed for increments of up to one year

Another great example of an ideal O-1B would be Atif Aslam, a Pakistani playback vocalist, lyricist, composer, and actor best known for his popular songs in both Pakistan and India. Aslam primarily sings in Urdu, though he also occasionally sings in Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, and Pashto. He was awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2008, the Pakistani government’s fourth-highest civilian honor. After being nominated for the best singer in Pakistan, Aslam was awarded a star in the Dubai Walk of Fame

3. Most importantly, there is no annual cap for O-1s like there are for H-1Bs

in 2019. Being featured in 2020’s Forbes Asia’s 100 Digital Stars also further strengthened his exceptional achievements. Switching to more academic professions, the O-1A category is generally considered for outstanding foreign workers in education, business, or the sciences. A textbook case for likely O-1A success would be Senior Indian attorney and former Solicitor General Harish Salve. Mr. Salve represents clients at the Supreme Court of India and gained notoriety by representing Kulbhushan Jadhav in court proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Salve was appointed as a Queen’s Counsel for the courts of England and Wales and routinely appears for significant businesses like Reliance Industries Limited (owned by Mukesh Ambani). India Today magazine named him 43rd in India’s 50 Most powerful persons of 2017. The cricketer (Chand), singer/ songwriter (Aslam), and advocate (Salve) all would likely have a high chance of O-1 approval. While

celebrities such as David Beckham, Jackie Chan, and Shakira would be fun to represent on an O-1, Immigration Attorneys are most valuable when we can take a more challenging client and achieve desired results. Sometimes an ideal applicant is obvious (“you know it when you see it”) but other times it takes some creative research, a ton of effort, and really getting to know the client and understanding their profession or industry.

hen I was in grade school, questions such as “Why does your religion have monkeys, elephants, and other animals?” were ubiquitous. I was always interested in our religion, but I could never defend it because I felt I wasn’t well-informed. My friends practicing other religions were able to speak eloquently about their faith, but they never had to defend it. It didn’t help that school textbooks contained incorrect details on Hinduism, probably because they were written by someone of a different faith. (A huge thank you to the Hindu American Foundation for changing that!) While other religions had similar prophets or roots, it was obvious how starkly different Hinduism seemed — and at times, Hinduism was seen as a joke. As I became older, I started asking my parents and family members more questions about Hinduism. Thanks to Bala-Vihar at South Florida Hindu Temple with Swamini Divyananda and Swami Vijayananda, in

The thing about holistic medicine and lifestyle choices is that yoga and Ayurveda are becoming more popular in the West our history has been construed, rewritten, or destroyed. For example, look at how yoga is portrayed today — merely a stretch-based exercise to those looking from the outside. By the time I had enrolled into an Ayurveda program, (Thank you, Sampoorna College of Ayurveda.), I was encouraged to learn Sanskrit (all made a little easier thanks to Hindi class!) and utilize it for a deeper understanding of our Shastras. (even those translated in English), it was just astonishing how logical and useful they were — and how they could stand the test of time. The words from thousands of years ago still ring true today. The thing about holistic medicine and lifestyle choices is that yoga and Ayurveda are becoming more popular in the West — but will they be practiced correctly? Will it be only temporary? A fad, perhaps? We are lucky that in our local community we have resources like Desh-Videsh to continue to provide a platform for our culture. Unfortunately, other communities may not be so lucky. This leads to the resounding question: If more of us do not keep stepping up to preserve Sanatana Dharma, will future generations be left with very little or diluted vedic knowledge at best? In an effort to spread Ayurveda and correct yoga in our local community, my company Namaskar To You, is hosting an event called “Life Fest” that will focus on Ayurveda (hint: “ayur” means “life”), as well as other alternative approaches. The event will take place at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale on September 17, 2022. If you are interested in sharing your knowledge or being one of the sponsors, please feel free to reach out. At the end of the day, it’s about preserving our rich culture for future generations.

Youth Cricket In South Florida by Tilak Mitra

I

magine yourself living somewhere amidst the culturally diverse yet closely knit tri-county of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, in the sunshine state — where outdoor sports can be played all year round. Imagine again, that you live not too far from the one and only internationally acclaimed cricket stadium in the continental USA. Imagine listening to the drum rolls, riding the Mexican waves in a frenzied crowd of thousands, and feeling the euphoria when two of the most

58

populous cricketing nations of the world display their superlative talents on a lush green carpet that is laid out at our own Central Broward Regional Park (CBRP) cricket stadium! The proximity to the Caribbean islands and the relentless followers from the Indian-subcontinent origin are determinants to the steady growth of the followers of the game of bat and ball and wickets. The din and bustle of the game of cricket is assuringly palpable right here in South Florida – a place that we have so affectionately called home.

Cricket is experiencing a dramatic rise in stature in our country, which has only accelerated at a blitzkrieg pace in the latter half of the last decade. The World Cup of the T20 format of cricket is going to be cohosted between the USA and the West Indies in 2024, and the USA is participating! A professional Minor League Cricket (MiLC) format had its first successful year in 2021 and is poised to take off on its second stint later this year. International cricket franchises are buying teams in the USA to get ready for the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) season

here in the USA – positioned to replicate the Indian Premier League (IPL). A national level MLC Junior championship that many look upon as a pipeline builder of young cricketing talent for the MLC is in its second successful year. There is no better time to participate in and witness the stellar growth of the game of cricket in the United States. There are at least four official South Florida cricket leagues that engage more than 40 teams to play competitive cricket all year round. Interestingly enough, we do not see much, if any, of our youth playing cricket. The distinct lack of youth participation in cricket in South Florida is stark, especially during current times when the future of cricket in the USA is at its brightest. Contrary to South Florida, other states and cities have steadily grown their infrastructure and opportunities for youth cricket. Places like Houston, Dallas, Raleigh, Seattle, and the Bay area counties, are replete with youth academies where the standard of the infrastructure and quality of coaches coupled with the richness of the training programs have attracted youths in hundreds. Cricket is taught seven days a week in stateof-the-art indoor facilities by topranked coaches in the country. Such academies have started earning dividends as they have already started winning top spots in the national championships. While it is true that South Floridians may have woken up to a late apocalypse, the best we can do for our next generation is to act with a sense of urgency instead of indulging in myriad levels of procrastination. Young Genius Cricketer’s Academy (YGCA) is a youth cricket academy right in the heart of South Florida.

JULY 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

YGCA is born out of the distinct need for us to foster the development of cricket as a mainstream sport for our next generation. Formed in June 2021, the vision and mission of YGCA is to provide state-of-the art infrastructure, professional coaches, and consistency in high cricketing standards to our youth so that they can not only learn and enjoy the game of cricket, but they can also perform in national tournaments and get the experience and exposure to compete with and become the very best in the country. YGCA operates from our CBRP cricket stadium. Every Saturday

morning, you will get to see boys and girls, primarily between the ages of 8 and 15 years old, put on their YGCA jerseys and train the entire morning. For students with advanced skills, the academy has a high-performance coaching (HPC) program that focuses on more targeted and advanced skill development. The academy is growing steadily as the word is spreading across our community. The current count of students is around thirty. The academy categorizes the students not only by their age groups, which currently supports children under 11 (U11), under 13 (U13), and under 15 (U15), but also by their skill levels. While our students are thoroughly enjoying the learning

process and the exposure that they are getting in national tournaments, they are also making friends and building social groups through which they keep the local buzz of cricket ringing loud and clear. Recently, YGCA organized its first tournament in South Florida. The tournament invited a team from New Jersey, Criclanes, to play a three-match series between April 20th and 23rd. The tournament was a great success. YGCA not only won the series 2–0 and were crowned the champions, but they also ensured that the rolling trophy was kept at home for this year. The tournament was played in the U15 category. The “Best Batsman” and the “Best Bowler” of the tournament went to Ishaan Doipodhe and Yash Gohel from Criclanes. Although the “Man of the Match” for the first game was won by Om Soni from Criclanes, Pranav Narayan and Aaditya Mitra, both from YGCA, won the “Man of Match” awards for the second and final game, respectively. Jeff Miller, the COO of both the Jamaica Tallawahs cricket team and the Fort Lauderdale Lions MiLC team, and one of the most prominent cricketing figures in South Florida, was the chief guest in the awards distribution ceremony. Wayne Tobey, Director of Sports & Recreation for the City of Coconut Creek, was the guest of honor. YGCA was privileged to receive the support of Miller and Tobey while their inspiring words for our youth indeed gave these students the added impetus to pursue their passion for the game. This year, YGCA is participating in the MLC Jr. Championship in the age categories of U13 and U15.

59

Our teams will be traveling nationally to play a minimum of 17 games between the months of May through September. YGCA will also be participating in the National Youth Cricket League (NYCL) during the month of July. There is more cricket to look forward to than we may be able to comprehend. There are not many places in the country where you can experience the sound of the willow or smell of the red cherry (cricket ball) on a beautiful mid-December Sunday as we can here in South Florida. We have the distinct privilege of being able to play cricket in all four seasons. The day will be a dream come true when we will get to hear the cracking sound of the willow or witness the bowling wizardry from some of our own youths from South Florida and see them at the national and the international stages.

The film was directed by Ayan Mukerji. The fantasy adventure film has Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy. Titled Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, it is the first installment of the trilogy which is a part of the Astraverse. The film is full of visual effects and graphical excellence that is commonly seen in Hollywood movies. The film seems to have its roots in Indian mythology with a contemporary plot. According to the trailer, Shiva (Ranbir Kapoor) is in love with Isha played by Alia Bhatt, but Shiva soon comes to discover that he has a mysterious link to Brahmastra, the top of all the astras or weapons. Shiva has a unique strength that enables him to fight with fire. Shiva, Guru (Amitabh Bachchan), and Anish (Nagarjuna) protect Brahmastra from Mouni Roy, the opponent. The film produced by Dharma Productions will be released on September 9, 2022. Director Ayan Mukherji expressed his gratitude to everyone for the immense love and praise shown by one and all. The trailer presented a wonderful show of filmmaking techniques and alluded to the promise of a gripping storyline highlighting the triumph of good over evil. Fans of Kapoor and Bhatt are waiting eagerly to watch their on-screen chemistry after they tied the knot in April 2022. September 9 will perhaps mark a new beginning in the history of Indian cinema.

Good news for the fans and admirers of Singham — the super cop is making a comeback! In his recent interview with the media, director Rohit Shetty confirmed that he will start shooting Singham 3 soon. The lead role will be played by none other than the original Singham star, Ajay Devgan. The last installment of the action-filled cop drama Singham Returns was way back in 2014. Hence, the wait has been long for fans of the popular franchise. In his interview, Shetty said that the film will go on floors next year. This time it is going to be a massive film and a great experience for the viewers. Another confirmation also came from Devgan. In a recent rapid-fire session on his social media handle, he was asked whether he would prefer to do a remake or sequel. Devgan chose a sequel and raised three fingers with the music of Singham in the background. It was indeed a positive signal and a moment of great jubilation for his followers. Devgan is also bringing back another loved character. His crime movie Raid is set for a sequel as well, as was confirmed by Bhushan Kumar. Viewers are also eager about this project. Devgan was recently seen in the lead role of the film Runway 34, along with an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh. His web series Rudra: The Edge of Darkness has also been highly acclaimed.

Amitabh Bachchan Announcing the New Season of KBC The Big B will be back with his wellknown show Kaun Banega Crorepati to be telecast on Sony TV. On Saturday, June 11, his announcement of Season 14 of KBC was shared on Sony TV’s social media handles. The bright and jovial presence of the host carried a funny but very important message for all the viewers. The message was communicated through a small enactment of the show where a woman named Guddi was the participant with Amitabh Bachchan as the host. After the introduction of the contestant, Big B asked Guddi a question. The question was: Which has GPS technology? The choices given were typewriter, television, satellite, and ₹2000 note. Guddi answered that it was the ₹2000 note that has GPS technology. After Bachchan announced that the answer was incorrect and that the correct answer was a satellite, Guddi was not ready to believe him. She said that he must be joking, as she had read in a newspaper about this. Bachchan told her that it was she who made it a joke. He further added that the news person made a mistake, but it was she who faced the loss. After that, he passed on an important message to all the viewers, saying that one should verify any

Sonali Bendre’s Comeback to The Broken News is Highly Appreciated

The Broken News, a web series based on conflicting trends of modern journalism, has become an instant hit after its release on June 10, 2022. This is the OTT debut of the famous actor of the 90s, Sonali Bendre. Within a week of its release, the series surpassed six million views and has been highly acclaimed by both critics and viewers. With BBC Studios as its producer and Vinay Waikul as director, this series is the official adaptation of Press, the famous British TV show. The story revolves around two conflicting news channels having their office in the same building. One of these channels is named Awaaz Bharti led by Amina Qureshi and played by Sonali Bendre. She is an ethical journalist and believes in the power of journalism as the fourth estate. The opposing channel, Josh 24/7,

72

under the leadership of Dipankar Sanyal played by Jaideep Ahlawat of Paatal Lok fame believes in the sensationalism of news. A young journalist Radha (Shriya Pilgaonkar), despite being an idealist, is caught between the two opposite poles. Viewers and critics are in total awe of the acting prowess of the lead actors, the plot of the series, and the realistic interpretation of events. Sonali, Jaideep, and Shriya are all overwhelmed by the response and thanked everyone for their love and blessings. The wellthoughtout content, efficient direction, and human touches in the story have made it a successful series. It was a pleasant experience with the suitable portrayal of the character by Sonali Bendre as well as Jaideep Ahlawat and Shriya Pilgaonkar.

Anupamaa is still on top with Banni Chow Home Delivery entering as a second Rupali Ganguly’s Anupamaa is still on the top of the TRP list for Week 24 of 2022. The score has also increased from 2.7 in the previous week to 3.00 in Week 24. However, it seems that the audience is not particularly fond of the present storyline of the Star Plus show. Many fans and critics feel that the storyline should have a major revamp to remain in the top position. Anupamaa indeed has a captive audience and their love and affection showered on the protagonist, Anupamaa aka Rupali Ganguly, have been a constant impetus for the production team. However, new serials with a fresh outlook and unique plots are coming up, and Anupamaa needs to cope with them. The surprise entry of Week 24 is Banni Chow Home Delivery. The new serial of Star Plus which

premiered on May 30, 2022, has been placed in the second position with a score of 2.1. It seems that the new concept and the fresh thought behind the storyline have attracted the audience. Banni Chow Home Delivery centers on the story of a young woman, Banni, who runs a small food delivery business. It is not just a livelihood for her; she pours her love and affection into her cooked food. In this world of fast food, she delivers home-cooked food to her customers with the utmost sincerity. The story also has the character of Yuvaan, an immature grown-up man who is oppressed by his family. Banni somehow gets involved with this person. The acting of Ulka Gupta as Banni and Pravisht Mishra as Yuvaan has been appreciated along with the drama in the story.
