Dear Readers, Many of you know that I am a big fan of Prime Minister Modi and his plans for the future of India. When he visited the United States back in September, I was thrilled to get the chance to see him address crowds of fans. That visit no doubt laid the groundwork for President Obama’s recent visit to India. The first US president to visit India twice during his term in office, President Obama and Prime Minister Modi appeared to further develop not only a partnership, but also a friendship. The two leaders managed to address several issues, one of the most important being strengthening the economies of both nations. The US President even attended a Republic Day parade, a holiday that is both meaningful and significant in so many ways. This month, we also feature a series of health and wellness articles. In this month’s Ask the Doc column, Dr. Shilpa P. Saxena discusses the benefits of integrative medicine and offers tips on how to keep some of those pesky New Year’s resolutions! Amanda Williams of Craving Thirty and The Self-Love Project is a local South Florida girl who keeps India and healthy living close to heart. Read her article on starting small when making a change - added bonus is a delicious juice recipe! For those who put off going to the dentist, Dr. Arun Garg reminds us why oral health is vital for our overall health. As always, we love getting feedback. Whether topic suggestions for future issues or questions for our experts, email us anytime! Send your comments or questions to info@ deshvidesh.com. In closing, it’s one of our favorite times of the year Bridal Expo season! Mark your calendars for these upcoming MyShadi Bridal Expos: Atlanta on March 1 at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel; Tampa on March 22 at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina; and Ft. Lauderdale on March 29 at the Bonaventure Resort & Spa. As always, admission and parking are free. The bonus? Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took his current leadership role in India, the country has become very visible one the world stage, and she has become a global player. When Prime Minister Modi invited US President Obama to be a chief guest at India’s Republic Day parade, the US President went out of his way, rearranged his state of the union speech, and accepted Mr. Modi’s invitation. Two major milestones happened to strengthen the India-US relationship. First, a

16

US President attended India’s Republic Day parade and became the first US President to visit India twice during his term. According to a White House spokesperson, the United States and India are true global partners when it comes to strengthening economies and maintaining strong democracies. And this is precisely why President Obama is the first to have visited India twice while in office. As Prime Minister Modi said, “This is a natural global partnership. It has become

even more relevant in the digital age. It is needed even more in our world for farreaching changes and widespread turmoil. The success of this partnership is important for our progress and for advancing peace, stability and prosperity around the world.” President Obama participated with Prime Minister Modi during a CEO roundtable and pledged $4 billion in investments and loans to focus on the “untapped potential” of India. “We are moving in the right direction,” President Obama told business leaders. India accounts for two percent of U.S. imports and one percent of its exports. Annual trade between the countries is less than one-fifth of U.S. trade with China — valued at $560 billion, added President Obama. “It will make it easy to do business,” he said. “You will find a tax regime that is predictable and competitive. We have removed some of the excesses of the past. We will now address the remaining uncertainties.” Under President Obama, trade between the two countries has increased by about 60 percent to nearly $100 billion a year – a record high, though that still amounts to hundreds of billions less than the trade done with China. “We’ve got to do better,” the President said, speaking at a U.S.-India Business Council Summit in New Delhi. In that spirit, President Obama announced a series of additional

steps that will generate more than $4 billion in trade and investment with India while supporting thousands of jobs in both countries: • The Export-Import Bank will commit up to $1 billion in financing to support “Made-in-America” exports to India. • OPIC will support lending to small and medium businesses across India that will result in more than $1 billion in loans in underserved rural and urban markets. • The U.S. Trade and Development Agency will aim to leverage nearly $2 billion in investments in renewable energy in India. The newly deepened partnership and friendship was even more evident at a reception with India’s President Mukherjee, where President Obama quoted a hymn that was dear to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart in his remarks: Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. “Here in the eventide, Indians and Americans, let us know, in the darkness or day, in good times or bad, whenever one of us looks to the other, we will surely say, abide with me,” he said. The two leaders made progress on several fronts: further negotiations on the

Civil Nuclear Deal, pledges to strengthen trade initiatives with India, greater accountability to monitor initiatives, and support for inclusion on the United Nations Security Council. As for just how many of these deals and pacts are im-

plemented and to what extent the visions of these two leaders is transformed into reality will be revealed only in the time to come. *Don’t miss the February 2015 digital issue of Desh-Videsh for extended coverage of President Obama’s visit to India.

Those who leave the comforts of home to conquer new challenges across the globe have a true adventurous spirit. To honor the exceptional and meritorious contributions of Indians living overseas as well as recognize their role in India’s growth, the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs constituted the annual Pravasi Bharatiya Sammaan Awards. During the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrated on January 11, 2015, fifteen prominent NRIs received the award for their contributions in various fields. Among these were Mala Mehta, who received the award for establishing an “Indo-Australian Bal Bharatiya Vidyalaya“ in Sydney and for pursuing the growth of Hindi in Australia; Donald Rabindernauth 22

Ramaotar, the President of Guyana; Dr. Rajaram Sanjaya for developing 480 varieties of wheat that have been released in 51 countries; New Zealand Member of Parliament Kanwaljit Singh Bakhshi; Duraikannu Karunakaram, the Justice of the Supreme Court of Republic of Seychelles; Essop Goolam Pahad, minister in the presidency from 1999 to 2008 in South Africa; Ashraf Palakunnumal, Malayalee Social Activist in United Arab Emirates; Mahendra Nanji Mehta, a Uganda-based businessman; Professor Nathu Ram Puri, founder of Purico; Raj Loomba, a philanthropist and founder of Rinku Group; Satyanarayan Nadella, CEO of Microsoft; Dr. Kamlesh Lulla, NASA scientist; Dr. Nandini Tandon, Silicon Val-

ley investor; Rajmal Parakh from Oman; and Shah Bharatkumar Jayantilal.

Satyanarayan Nadella, CEO of Microsoft

Satyanarayan Nadella, a life-long learner, cricket fan, and poet, was born in 1967 in Hyderabad, India to a Telegu Kamma family. He attended public schools there and received a bachelors’ degree in electrical engineering from Manipal University. Subsequently, he traveled to the United States to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Wisconsin, and he later received an MBA from the University of Chicago. Before becoming the CEO of Microsoft, he was the Executive Vice President of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise

group and was responsible for running and developing its Computing Platforms, Cloud Computing Services, and Developer Tools. He came to Microsoft, he told employees in an email, “for the same reason I think most people join Microsoft – to change the world through technology that empowers people to do amazing things. Many companies aspire to change the world. But very few have all the elements required: talent, resources and perseverance. Microsoft has proven that it has all three in abundance.” Growing up in Hyderabad and playing cricket on his school’s team, he calls cricket his passion. “I think playing cricket taught me more about working in teams and leadership that has stayed with me throughout my career,” he said. He also enjoys watching Test cricket, “which is the longest form of any sport in the world,” with games that 24

can go for days and days. “I love it,” he says. “There’s so many subplots in it, it’s like reading a Russian novel.” Nadella is an avid learner, and he often signs up for online courses during his free time. “I’m a learner,” Nadella says. “I think the thing that I realized is, what excites me is that I’m learning something. I can learn something about some area. I can learn something from people. I can learn something from doing things differently. And I admire that

in other people, too. I fundamentally believe that if you are not learning new things … you stop doing great and useful things. So family, curiosity and hunger for knowledge all define me.” Nadella relaxes by reading all forms of poetry by Indian and American poets. “You’re trying to take something that can be described in many, many sentences and pages of prose, but you can convert it into a couple lines of poetry and you still get the essence,

so it’s that compression. The best code is poetry.” Married for 22 years to his high school sweetheart, Nadella and his family live in Bellevue, Washington.

Dr. Kamlesh Lulla, NASA Scientist

Growing up in Vadodara, Gujarat, India, Dr.Kamlesh

Lulla, a distinguished Gujarati NASA scientist, was encouraged to pursue a career in space science after hearing a radio broadcast of the Apollo 11 lunar landing and Neil Armstrong’s historic first steps on the moon in 1969. In 1968, Dr. Lulla attended the M.S. University of Baroda, and earned bachelor’s degrees in biology and chemistry. He pursued a master’s and doctorate degree program in environmental science and ecology and received his first PhD degree in 1976. Dr.Kamlesh Lulla trained astronauts like Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Pandya Williams. He is currently the chief scientist for Earth ob-

servation in the Human Exploration Science office at the Johnson Space Center at NASA. He is the force behind the concept of “Earth Smart Training,” which has helped capture captivating photos of the Earth from outer space. Dr. Lulla, who can converse in seven of India’s fourteen major languages, maintains strong ties to his Indian heritage and credits his success to his personal and professional life. “My Indian-American heritage values that contributed to my career success: value of high-level education (two Ph.D. degrees); dedication to family and profession; integrity; respect for others; and hard work,” Dr. Lulla said.

While receiving this special award, Dr Lulla said, “Being a native of the state, it is a special feeling getting recognition here. While I have been working in the US for more than 25 years, there is no feeling like coming home.’’

Dr. Nandini Tandon, Silicon Valley Investor

Dr. Nandini Tandon has mesmerized the world with her exceptional work in the field of healthcare and IT. She is also an ace venture capitalist and has helped build various companies in pharmaceutical, medical devices, diagnostics, and biotechnology sector right from research to commercialization. Dr. Tandon has served on the boards of more than a dozen private new technology companies in biotechnology and medical technology and is currently on the board of U-Systems. Dr. Tandon received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry cum laude with Phi Beta

Kappa from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia and a doctorate degree in biochemistry with Phi Lambda Upsilon from Duke University. The Tandon family has been living in the US since the early 1980s. Dr. Tandon spent a decade as a venture capitalist and another decade helping build companies in the biotechnology, diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceutical and semiconductor industries across various stages of development, from research to commercialization. Dr. Tandon, her sister Priya Tandon, and Dr. B. R. Shetty, based in Abu Dhabi started SVADESH (Silicon Valley and Avadh’s Development for Entrepreneurial Services for Humanity) an investment initiative by NRIs in India. Investing in India is like a “homecoming” for the Tandon sisters. “Our mother wanted us to make a similar hospital in UP,” said Dr. Nandini Tandon.

The Tandon sisters are set to invest more than a billion dollar in Uttar Pradesh to develop a “teaching hospital,” and integrated healthcare system. “The eye hospital in Sitapur was set up by our great grandfather. My father is from Agra and we have relatives and friends across UP,” said Dr Nandini.

When Getting Healthy, Start Small

Craving Thirty and The Self Love Project spinach with arugula. Use dark leafy greens like kale, collard greens or swiss chard for a variety of antioxidants. You can also use beet tops, watercress, and different lettuces. But, be mindful that with each change, the flavor will change as well.

Gateway Green Smoothie

Beginnings are the worst. At least when it comes to starting healthy habits. If you have ever kicked an old habit to replace it with a new one, you know what I am talking about. Most of America survives on food laden with refined sugars, salt and fat. We are also used to lots of caffeine and not enough water. There have been times in my life where I was eating out a lot, and putting more and more salt in my food at home. I didn’t like drinking water, unless it was flavored, and had a seemingly insatiable sweet tooth. If this sounds familiar, then you know that when you are in this place, the thought of having a kale salad everyday is not appealing in the least. That is why I am a big fan of the transitory period and starting small. Here is where this green smoothie comes in. The Gateway Green Smoothie is made up of only three ingredients and will convince your taste buds that healthy eating isn’t so bad. Not only is it sweet and delicious, it is also a great way to get a serving of greens for breakfast. Plus, you can make it less sweet and more nutritious whenever you want. For something less sweet, use half water, half apple juice, and then eventually just water. Over time, you can also add more greens, and experiment with different ones. For a spicy kick, replace 44

Yields: 2 - 4 servings Time: < 10 minutes 2-4 large handfuls baby greens 2 cups apple juice 2 cups frozen pineapple Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy immediately, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to drink. Shake well before drinking.

Global Weight Loss Program Addresses Global Obesity As a doctor, my mission is to ensure all my patients have the healthiest life possible, and we both know that means you need to lose some weight. More and more of my patients are coming in and telling me about the latest fad diets. As I weigh them, I see they are gaining weight instead of losing pounds of fat. Well, enough is enough, and as your doctor, I am taking a stand. Being overweight will shorten your life, and medical science has proven getting rid of toxic fat will drastically improve your life. Here are the facts: Here are the facts: • 75% of Americans are overweight or obese. • 57 million are pre-diabetic due to weight issues. • $117 billion is spent on health-related obesity problems annually. • Obesity is linked to heart attacks and most types of cancer in addition to osteoarthritis, breathing issues, high cholesterol, and back pain. After watching countless numbers of patients come into my practice describing some new diet or weight loss scheme that not only failed, but also added inches to their waist, thighs and glutes, I decided it was time to take action. The obesity epidemic is getting worse. Let me help you so you don’t become just a sad statistic. Stop and think, why suffer from these diseases when you don’t have too! Take a look at these proven facts, but I warn you, they are not pretty. In fact, if you ask me, they are pretty scary! The studies are in, and the results are clear. Medical science has proven beyond a reasonable doubt, the risk of disease increases dramatically when you are overweight or obese: 48

Premature Death:

High Blood Pressure:

260%

Gallstones: 270% Heart Attack

360%

Degenerative Arthritis:

* Not even Vegas would touch these odds! You are over 26 times more likely to have Type 2 Diabetes, if you are overweight, it’s safe to say you are eventually going to get it. The bottom line is overweight individuals are twice as likely to die prematurely. So think about that for a minute. According to the Mayo Clinic, “If you are overweight, reducing your weight by only 5%-10% is proven to decrease your chance of developing disease by as much as 50%.” Isn’t it time you did something about it? Dr. Iqbal Nazir

Homeopathic Consultant and Therapist This month,Desh-Videsh talked with one of our own, Dr. Iqbal Nazir, a practicing homeopath. Learn more about his background and passion for his work. Please tell us a bit about your background. I was born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, and received my primary education from Baqar High School in Rampur. I earned a Bachelor’s in Physiology and Master’s in Biochemistry as well as degrees in Pharmacy and Pharmacognosy (study of medicinal plants and Homeopathy). I am also a Certified Clinical Chemist from the American Society of Clinical Pathology. I am married and have two boys and two girls, and my wife is a Nutritionist who cooks very healthy, organic foods! Tell us a little bit about your career and how you came to be where you are today. Early on in high school, I had a strong medical aptitude and the full support of my father. His dream was that I acquire the highest level of education in the medical field to serve the family and community, and his constant encouragement led me to higher education. I moved to New York City and start working in a local pharmacy. After some time, I got 58

a job with Columbia Presbyterian Hospital’s Clinical Laboratory as a Medical Technologist, and I learned about the laboratory tests required to diagnose various diseases. I also worked at NYU Hospital, before moving to Florida where I worked as a Supervisor of the Clinical Chemistry Lab at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. My direct contact with patients both in the pharmaceutical and clinical settings led me to understand various diseases and symptoms as well as the cure and side effects of medicines. When I studied details about prescription drugs, it was mind boggling to know these synthetic toxic chemicals caused more harm than good with enormous side-

effects. Patients were not getting well, and if one symptom was cured, two more appeared. People live all their lives taking medications for many chronic diseases such as diabetes, cholesterol, ulcers, arthritis, depression, and more. The use of steroids, antibiotics, pain killers, and antidepressants deteriorates ones immune system to the point that a patient is always sick and reliant on numerous medications. These were the circumstances which lead me to practice homeopathy, where natural medicine derived from medicinal plant sources and has no side effects as they cure the root cause of the problems. What exactly is homeopathic medicine and how does it differ from conventional medicine? German doctor Samuel Hahnemann discovered Homeopathy in 1799. Homeopathy is a science and a form of alternate medicine, which involves treating the individual with highly diluted substances that are non-toxic with the aim of triggering the body’s natural system of healing. The basic principle of Homeopathy is the “Law of Similar” meaning that “Let like be cured by like.” For example, if a patient complains about insomnia, a Homeopath will look for the remedy, which causes the same symptoms in healthy person. Caffeine in large doses causes insomnia, but in extremely small doses will put the person to sleep thereby treating sleeplessness. Onions being peeled by a healthy person can cause itchy and watery eyes. For a patient complaining of itching and watery eyes, a Homeopath would prescribe Alum Sepia (the chemical name of red onion) to cure watery eyes. The majority of Homeopathic medicines are taken sublingual and absorb directly into the blood through the mucus membranes in the mouth; therefore, they do not have preservatives, fillers, binders, dyes and other toxic chemicals like conventional medicines. Though Homeopathy has been practiced in the US since 1821, tis popularity began to fade in the early 1900s due to the growing influence of big pharmaceutical companies. The practice of homeopathy faded away, and now only Connecticut, Arizona, and Nevada recognize the field and have Licensed Homeopath 60

Doctors. Florida authorizes Homeopathy as an Alternate Medicine. Homeopathy is practiced around the world mainly in Germany, France, United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and some South American nations.. In conventional medicine, doctors suppress the symptoms of diseases with an emphasis on controlling the disease (i.e. keeping diabetes, cholesterol, or arthritis under control) instead of seeking to cure. If a patient goes to his primary care physician with complaints of uncontrollable headaches, ulcers, arthritis, shortness of breath, severe back pain, etc., the primary care doctor will refer him/her to a specialist such as a neurologist, rheumatologist, orthopedic, urologist, or nephrologist. The specialist will prescribe medications most f which cause side effects making the condition of patient worse. Now this patient has even more problems. In contrast, a Homeopath does not cure diseases it cures the person with the disease. People should consider Homeopathy for acute and chronic conditions because of the effectiveness in diagnosing the root cause of problems. As Homeopathy cures rather than controls. What are the top three habits everyone should enforce to ensure a healthy lifestyle or at least put them on the path to healthy, holistic living? To live a healthy lives three things are important: food, exercise, and spirituality. Food: Eat organic and natural foods, avoid processed, junk foods, and read labels. Do not buy foods with nitrates, sulfates, red or yellow dye, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, modified starch, or benzoates. Do not drink sodas as they contain sodium benzoate, which depletes calcium from bones. Do not drink alcohol - it is a drug, removes water from tissues, and is a powerful dehydrating agent. Do not smoke as any kind of smoking is injurious to health. Exercise: At least walk 500 steps per day, do some cardiovascular exercises. Spiritual: Learn to forget and forgive people, and see your own shortcomings. If you start looking for a perfect person, you will be left alone. Get involved in yoga, prayers, and meditation. Three popular shows all with same theme

Qubool Hai, Uttaran and Humsafar, three extremely popular shows running on three different channels are all set to surprise audiences with a similar sequence. Yes! Each of these shows was scheduled to shoot a sequence involving the protagonist walking on fire and glass. While Uttaran and Humsafar went ahead with the idea, Qubool Hai decided to drop the sequence at the last minute fearing too many similarities with the other two shows. For Uttaran, the dramatic sequence was scheduled as part of its finale and therefore the makers did not have the liberty to alter their decision.

Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke approaches finale Zee TV’s popular show featuring Ankita Gera, Roopal Tyagi, Mahima Makwana and Piyush Sahdev ended the last week of January. The show has entertained audiences for more than two years and concluded with a grand finale, as is revealed by sources close associated to the makers. The stars of the show were informed about the finale. Chances are that it may be extended for a week or so be-

yond the end of January, but it will surely conclude. According to reports, this show will be replaced by another by the same producers.

Rashmi Pitre finally quits Diya Aur Bati Hum

Actress Rashmi Pitre, best known for her supporting role as Chaturi in the hugely popular serial Diya Aur Bati Hum on Star Plus, is finally mov-

ing on. After being associated with the prime time serial for over four years, Rashmi’s decision to quit is not sudden and is in mutual agreement with the organizers of the show. The episode showing her exit from the show aired recently. The actress plans to utilize this break to connect with her long lost passion of writing and painting until she resumes a busy shooting schedule for another show.

Siddharth Shukla’s character dies in Balika Vadhu Actor Siddharth Shukla, who made a mark in the world of television through his portrayal of the quintessential gentleman as Shiv the husband of the protagonist Anandi, is all set to quit the show. Though Siddharth entered the house a little late, he was able to impress viewers with his role 66

as an honest collector and an equally supportive husband. Recently, the actor has become busy with his film shootings and therefore expressed a desire to quit the show. The makers agreed and have shot a sequence giving Shiv a martyr’s death in the show soon.
