Dear Brides and Grooms, Congratulations on your engagement! You’ve found the love of your life, and now the excitement of planning what may be the most important day of your life is upon you. During this time of anticipation and expectation, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the multitude of projects involved with planning your wedding. Let’s face it, there is never enough time to visit every reception site, flip through every photographer’s portfolio or hear every band and DJ. Relax and look through our Summer wedding resource issue while you put your feet in the sand at the beach! This issue provides invaluable information from choosing vendors to tips from professionals themselves on what questions to ask when booking your vendors. This issue, we present an article on how to choose your wedding photographer and videographer. We are here to help you find the perfect components to make your wedding day flow smoothly. In real weddings section, we present four wedding articles, two from Atlanta area, one from Florida and one from Hawaii. Personally I am very excited to talk about Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard ‘s wedding. In past issues, we have discussed Gabbard (from Hawaii), who who was born to non-Hindu parents but adopted the Hindu religion at very early age. She even took her an oath in Congress on the Bhagavad Gita, rather than the Bible. Recently, she took another important step in life marrying in the traditional Hindu and Vedic rituals. Let me also remind you all about our MyShadi Bridal Expo in Orlando on September 20, 2015. As you may know, Orlando is our best of the best show with over 200 vendor booths. In our last few wedding resources issues, we have covered several destination weddings, and knowing that more of our readers choose this option, the Orlando show will feature a special section just for the vendors who specialize in destination weddings. Lastly, remember we love to hear from our readers and would love to feature your wedding in our magazine! You can email me at info@deshvidesh.com. Best wishes for efficient wedding planning and a blissful marriage! Raj Shah Managing Editor
Bhumi Weds
Nikhil Bhumi has known Nikhil since she was nine. Not then, or all throughout college when they both studied on the same campus, did she believe she would marry him. It was when their families suggested the alliance that both Bhumi and Nikhil decided to focus their attention on getting to

know one another better. The more they found out, the more convinced they were that no one was more perfect. And on one special occasion, Nikhil orchestrated a little treasure hunt – the treasure being a diamond ring and wedding proposal. Now who could refuse that!

A year of preparation enabled the families to manage all arrangements. With no professionals involved, the wedding was entirely a reflection of the taste and values of the families. A garba was held a day prior to the wedding. Traditional colors such as yellow, green, red and gold were used in the floral decorations. A large statue of Radha and Krishna were placed in the center, with flowers and a rangoli arranged around them. In striking contrast, the dining area took on various shades of peacock, all of which were brought out in the linens used.

A morning wedding followed the next day. Held at the local temple, the location was of special significance. This was the temple that both Nikhil and Bhumi, and the families, frequented for many years. White sheers with accents of maroon were hung all across the ceiling and the sides. Floral arrangements on the pillars, aisle and mandap brought the temple to life. Traditional wedding music played during the entire ceremony, as a live band supported the mood perfectly. Nikhil arrived for the wedding in a horse carriage, and whisked his wife away in her wedding gift, a Porsche.

The auditorium that was chosen for the reception resembled a dome. The sheer white on the top reflected the colors of the strobes perfectly. White, pink, and gold shone through in the flowers and candles, and a gobo monogram of the couple’s initials beamed throughout on the ceiling drapes. Special dances and skits tied the event together perfectly. Nightmares, a wedding disaster, and nerves – nothing could come in the way of making this a perfect wedding. It is clear that not just the ceremony, but also the life of this couple
is set for perfection. Bhumi firmly believes that you can never stop dating, and never let the magic fizzle. More importantly, she insists that you cannot go to bed angry with one another. For Nikhil, meeting this respiratory therapist clearly took his breath away!

Shadman and Farah may have been introduced to one another through mutual friends, but the bond they developed thereafter made them inseparable. One and a half years after they first met, an engagement followed. With about six months to plan the wedding, Farah decided to manage without a professional consultant. It seemed easy at first, but as the wedding date drew closer, the pace picked up and Shadman and their friends were asked to provide additional help. The Hilton Atlanta was large enough to accommodate the entire wedding party, and so the venue was the first choice. Celebrations began with the mehndi (rasm-e-henna) ceremony. Decorative lanterns atop tables, colorful tablecloths and shimmering gold, green, purple and pink accents on the canopy and stage added a vibrant splash of glamour.
The wedding ceremony began in the morning and was held at the local mosque. It was a simple, traditional affair, but not without the characteristic beauty of a wedding. Whites and golds in the ensembles, with bold red highlights from floral garlands made for perfect wedding pictures.

At the reception, guests were welcomed to the dazzling sight of gold, red and white. Floral centerpieces, dangling crystals, and ornate pillars made for a grand sight. An elaborate stage, complete with large golden doors and uplights were breathtaking. Handmade programs and a smartphone app allowed all guests to capture and upload their favorite moments truly making the occasion a standout. Farah chose some of the industry’s best wedding vendors. Peter Nguyen Photography
provided excellence, capturing perfect angles and expressions each time. He also managed to allow for all poses and moments that Farah explained she wanted. Noorface built tastefully on Farah’s existing beauty, and ensured she was every bit the resplendent bride. No wedding comes without anxiety and sleeplessness. But ask Farah, and she will immediately tell you that none of it is really worth wasting all your energy, since the day will have come and gone before you know it, and you will have missed all the fun and excitement. Live each moment to its fullest, and it will gift you a lifetime of memories.

haron and Ankit’s story is one where friends grow to fall in love and soon become soul mates. This is the kind of love anyone would be blessed to have, for in this relationship you will find the greatest support, strength, and sense of belonging. After years of being together, Ankit took Sharon to a quiet island, where a tent with a dazzling diamond ring awaited her.
The couple also worked with several professionals to deal with details and ensure their dream wedding would come to life. Sona Photography and Riant Films captured each and every special moment so that the wedding would never be forgotten. Ankit and Sharon were engaged for a year and a half before the wedding, as Sharon wanted to find the most auspicious date. After all, this was the most important day of her life, and it needed to be just right! Friends and family readily jumped in to help in any way they could, while also allowing Sharon space to manage things her way. and Riant Films captured each and every special moment so that the wedding would never be forgotten. Khasiyat catered to every palette and served an unforgettable first meal to the newlyweds. And even Adi brought every event to life with his energetic dhol! The Omni Orlando Resort was the chosen venue for the wedding. Suggested by Sharon’s father, it was ideal not just for its look and ambience, but also since it made for a great getaway for both families, who could enjoy a little vacation while attending the wedding. 50

The sangeet was a mix of Gujarati and Punjabi flavor. Traditional in its setting, the venue was highlighted in pinks and greens. Food stations were decorated to showcase their cuisine, and little lanterns and candles were chosen over flowers, uplifting the mood and the ivory linen beautifully. Music was a combination of Gujarati and Punjabi styles. The wedding was held indoors owing to unpredictable Florida weather and was a day affair. A gold mandap without any pillars with bright pink and orange drapes was set up. Elephant idols were stationed at the end of the aisle, with petals and candles added for greater effect. Orange and pink also reflected in most of the floral arrangements used. DJ Pram played songs of choice for the special select moments. The bride and groom left in a Cinderella horse carriage, a wish Sharon had long harbored.
The reception was all about style and class. With a blue and silver the predominant theme, several elements were personalized, including the favors. Elaborate floral arrangements, candles, gobos, and pillars were set up to perfection. The wedding went off without a hitch, so all this left for Sharon is to let the realization of being married set in, and enjoy a beautiful life ahead.

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI 2nd District) really set the standard when she took her oath of office on the Bhagavad Gita, being the first person in the history of the United States of America to have done so. Her wedding to cinematographer Abraham Williams followed a similar theme, as the two were wed amid traditional Hindu hymns and in the Hindu style. Ditching a previously chosen wedding gown, Gabbard ordered an Indian ensemble online, which arrived less than two days before the wedding. In a resplendent royal blue silk jacket teamed with a flowing gold skirt, she was a stunning bride.

With a Brahmin priest to wed the two together in the traditional style, complete with the ceremonial fire that calls on Hindu deities to bear witness to the union, Gabbard and Williams added their own personal touch by writing and reciting their own special vows to one another. The moment stood out beautifully in the ceremony, as did the special emotions that touched the bride and groom equally. The ceremony concluded with a special kirtan, where guests gathered around the newly pronounced couple, celebrating their joyous union and blessing them abundantly. Given the mood of the wedding ceremony, the food needed to recreate the same feel. A traditional Indian spread that included paneer, samosas and saffron rice were all served with love by Gabbard’s brother-in-law.
Although the ceremony and every element around it came together perfectly, the occasion was like any other wedding, bringing with it its share of nerves. For one, Gabbard was extremely concerned that the dress might not make it on time. She continually tracked the shipment until it finally made it to her doorstep. What’s more, the weather threatened to dampen spirits with a fifty percent chance of rain. However, it held beautifully and not only gave the couple clear skies, but also a gentle breeze that was perfect for the occasion.
With Gabbard’s busy work schedule, a relaxing honeymoon will have to wait. The couple, however, has no complaints, as they continue to bask in the magic of a wedding ceremony that seems to have cast a spell on them.

Peter Nguyen Photography Peter Nguyen became a photographer after losing his father to cancer seven years ago, an event that changed his outlook and perspective on life. He shares “Life is truly short and they’re remembered by moments. It’s my aim with my photography to capture those most precious moments and let you relive them over and over again … I love catching unguarded expressions, fleeting moments, seeing things in different perspectives, and revealing great stories through my images. I’m all about the images, so don’t be surprised when you see me climbing on top of a hill, lying flat on the ground, shooting through the bushes, getting in the water, or shooting in the rain to get the shots you love.” Nguyen trained with National Geographic Photographer, Joe McNally, New York’s Fashion Photographer, Lindsey Adler, South African Fashion Wedding Photographer, and Brett Florens. He recently ranked in the top 5% of Wedding Professionals nationwide by WeddingWire for consistently producing images that clients love, excellence in quality, service, responsiveness and professionalism.

Personality Most photographers agree, it comes down to personality, personality, personality! Stephana Ferrell of Sona Photography stresses, “You have a vision for your day, and you’ll need someone behind the lens that can capture it for you the way you want it. Just as there are painters with different techniques to paint the same media/subject, your photographer and cinematographer will have a unique way of “seeing” your event. Likewise, personalities need to click as this will be a day with some hiccups and time management concerns- make sure all of your vendors will support you through your day and not add to the stress. For some couples, you may need to experience the photographer in action, so consider using your Engagement Photo Session as a trial run. Soham Patel of Soham Photography adds that doing an Engagement Photo Shoot help the photographer to “understand the bride and groom and their personality.” Your photographer is one vendor who is truly going to be with you every step of the way, so the connection you feel with him or her is not one to be taken lightly. Budget Budget is always an important consideration for any vendor that you choose. Most photographers agree though, that budget alone should not influence your choice until you have narrowed down your list. Factor in the photographer’s ability to capture stunning images in the style you want. Also, be sure to compare apples to apples; in other words, prices do not always reflect the same time commitment or printing/ album choices. Experience Photographers with many years of experience have not only fine-tuned their skills, they have also developed relationships with other vendors and are familiar with most venues. Seema Samji of

Zamana Lifestyles adds, “Photographers who have been in the game for a while will be more comfortable with the shoot, rather than be overwhelmed with the size and complexity of the Indian weddings!” Being fully prepared also comes with experience as noted by Altaf Khan of Shennai Art Studio. “We don’t want to miss any key moments, so we bring multiple cameras, and use as many as five cameras.” Wedding Photography Styles Your chosen photographer should reflect the style you envision for your wedding memories. Traditional or classic photographers will work from a shot list you provide and are more comfortable with formal, posed shots. Photographers who embrace a candid or photojournalistic style are more likely to step back and capture moments as they happen. Some photographers place more emphasis on an artistic or creative style. These images tend to feature unique poses, incorporate different angles and scenery, and focus on details like clothing and décor. Most modern wedding photographers use a blend of styles, so looking through portfolios is an important way of gauging where a photographer’s style falls. Ashok Pancholi june 2015 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

of Digital Dream Studio emphasizes the importance of looking at portfolios and asks clients “to really look through past work in detail.” Portfolios will reflect how a photographer maintains their creative and professional integrity while also capturing the shots clients want. Prepare for Your First Meeting Once the list of photographers has been narrowed, focus on gathering the right information at each of your meetings. Kimberly Romano of Kimberly Photography reminds couples to approach their first meeting with an “open mind. Come prepared with what you want to know from your photographer. Let us walk you through the process and ask questions, even if you’re unsure about the question.” In addition to technical questions about the contract, fees, and equipment, here are a few more to keep in mind during the first meeting:
106
• What style do you specialize in? (Styles discussed in the section above.) • How would you describe your working style? (Do you want your photographer to orchestrate moments or capture candid shots?) • Who will be photographing my wedding? (Be sure to meet with not only the owner,
but also anyone who will be a part of your team.) • Have you shot at my venue(s) before? (Understanding the lighting and knowing great spots for photos is a huge advantage.) • Have you ever worked alongside any of my vendors? (Most wedding vendors develop strong relationships, which makes for seamless flow throughout all your events.) • Are you shooting in digital or film format or both? (Most photographers shoot digital now, but always good to ask!) • Can I give you a list of specific shots we would like? (Some photographers prefer to stay true to creativity, while others understand you need some posed photos.) • How many pictures do you take? (Most photographers take 500 pictures.) • Will the photos be retouched and color balanced? (Will this be done before you see the proofs?) • How long after the wedding do we get to see the photos?
In reflecting on the role of a photographer, Amish Thakkar of Fine Art Productions states, “We don’t simply click and process pictures, we preserve the exact emotion you had during your wedding, and pack it into one beautiful remembrance of a wedding portrait.” So as you narrow your choices, consider how your first meetings went. Did you feel at ease with the photographer? Was there a connection, and did he/she understand your expectations? Will your emotions be captured to live on in beautiful portraits? Listening to your own intuition is just as important as considering budget and style. Favorite Wedding Moments The experts share their favorite wedding moments. Altaf (Shennai Art Studio): To be honest, every wedding moment is my favorite moment! Ashok (Digital Dream Studio): Covering the entire Wedding! Especially capturing all the sentimental moments. wedding. Making sure everything starts on time, being in front of all your family and friends. Once it’s over, you see the stress go away and couples are in complete love and bliss. Niulka and Luis (NSPG Media): My favorite moment of a wedding is the reception. It’s like the finale to a fireworks show saving all of the sparkle and excitement until the end! Peter (Peter Nguyen Photography): The bride’s entrance is by far my most favorite wedding moment. I love capturing the groom’s look when he sees his bride for the first time in her wedding dress. Seema (Zamana Lifestyles): I love that the weddings in the Indian culture involve all the families, friends, relatives, acquaintances, work colleagues... everyone comes to celebrate with the couple. There is so much love, joy and happiness...so many priceless moments to capture! Soham (Soham Photography): When the clients and family/friends are having fun during all moments of the wedding … especially because pictures always come out great when people are happy! Stephana (Sona Photography): My favorite moment is when the Bride and Groom see each other for the first time! In most cases, we are there with them prior to this moment, and the preparation and anticipation for that first gaze just makes for such amazing energy and emotion […] It is such a special moment, and I feel so honored when a couple entrusts us to capture it.
