Dear Readers, This is one of my favorite issues of the year. I know it seems like I say that a lot, but really, this is one of my favorite issues! This time of year, we celebrate the many accomplishments of our youth. Young South Asians, whether in grade school, college, or part of the working world, are making names for themselves in virtually every field. Just as we did this time last year, we congratulate the winners of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and the National Geographic Bee (all Indian!) for their hardearned achievements. It’s not surprising given that our community values hard work and ambition. Learn more about these special individuals as well as about why there is a tendency for South Asians to do well in these types of competitions. We also celebrate the hard work of youth right here in our own backyard. So many high school students from our community were recognized as Valedictorians and Salutatorians - an accomplishment that comes only after much hard work and perseverance. Congratulations to all 2015 graduates from the Desh-Videsh team. We wish you much success in college and careers ahead. And we especially look forward to hearing about more great things to come. Finally, we are in the midst of planning for the MyShadi Bridal Expo in Orlando on September 20, 2015. Orlando is our best of the best show with over 200 vendor booths, and this year, we’re excited about a new addition - a destination wedding pavilion! Many couples now choose to get married away from home, be it an exotic locale or just a fun destination where guests and the couple alike can enjoy. The Orlando Bridal Expo will feature a special section just for vendors who specialize in destination weddings, making planning that much easier. As always, we welcome feedback, so please feel free to send comments, suggestions, and questions to info@ deshvidesh.com. Happy Reading! Raj Shah Managing Editor

Indian Americans Shine at the 2015 Spelling Bee In what is developing into quite an interesting trend, Indian American kids are dominating the Scripps National Spelling Bee year after year. What is even more remarkable is that the winners from the last eight years have all been of South Asian origin. This year was no exception as 13-year-old Vanya Shivashan14

kar and 14-year-old Gokul Venkatachalam walked away with the coveted top prize as co-winners. The two winning words on the night of the finale were “scherenschnitte” and “nunatak” spelt correctly by Vanya and Gokul respectively. to-neck in what seemed to be a never-ending contest; they were both practically flawless, and it was hard to point out who was better. Finally, the contest ended in a tie, only the second time since 1962 that the top honor has been shared between two contestants. For Vanya’s family, it was déjà vu as her elder sibling Kavya won the Scripps Na-

tional Spelling Bee in 2009. Vanya also won $100,000 in the show entitled Child Genius, in which she surpassed a number of brilliant kids competing against each other in mathematics, spelling, current affairs, and geography. Gokul, on his part, finished in third place in the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee behind Ansun Sujoe and Sriram Hathwar.

This year’s National Spelling Bee witnessed nearly 200 children breezing through the preliminary rounds without a single wrong spelling. The top 50 with the highest scores sailed into the semis where as many as 21 kids did not spell a single word incorrectly. Further tests were conducted to determine the final ten for the grand finale. When the contest finally whittled down to three participants, the judges unleashed the toughest 25 words. Competitors left standing on stage after completing these 25 words have to be declared the winners, even if there is more than a single contestant as what happened last year. While Cole ShaferRay quickly exited after the

word “acritarch,, both Vanya and Gokul stayed on to make it a marathon war of words. The judges finally relented and both contestants were declared joint winners. Besides the engraved trophy that they get to hold before the world, both winners will receive $35,000 as

prize money, a $2,500 savings bond, a reference library and several other prizes. Both Vanya and Gokul have competed at the Scripps National Spelling Bee previously, making them determined, self-confident and rich in experience.

Meet the Geo Bee Winner with the World at His Fingertips The 2015 National Geographic Bee witnessed the sheer brilliance of 14-year old Karan Menon from New Jersey as he surpassed his fellow contestants to become the proud recipient of the much coveted $50,000 scholarship prize. This competition has been open to eighth graders across the United States since 2000 with the finals being held in Washington, DC. Finalists at the Geo Bee beat over four million students participating in local competitions before arriving in DC where they had to go through ten more rounds of questions. Menon outdid Shriya Yarlagadda, an 11-year-old from Michigan, who missed just one question, to become the champion.

The competition was moderated by television journalist Solelad O’Brien. Shriya dominated the contest from the start, but Menon proved to be a worthy opponent. In a nailbiting moment, Karan Menon challenged judges when he answered that taconite was the mineral found in the Mesabi Range whereas the judges expected iron ore as the answer. Winning the National Geographic Bee has been a natural culmination for Karan’s passion for geography. The New Jersey teenager claimed to be on “the top of the world” af

ter his thrilling victory. When quizzed about his future dreams, he showed maturity by saying that he would make a career choice only after finishing high school. It is interesting to note that out of the ten finalists at the National Geographic Bee this year, seven were of Indian origin who were individual state champions. Besides being awarded a $50,000 scholarship, the Geo Bee winner gets to enjoy an all-expenses paid tour to Galapagos Islands as well as a lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society.

Why Indian Americans are Spelling Bee Champions

In what is becoming quite the subject of debate and controversy, Indian Americans appear to dominate every intelligence competition held across the United States. Whether it is the Scripps National Spell30

ing bee or the National Geographic Bee, kids of South Asian origin are walking away with the top honors year after year much to the chagrin of the American population. The 2015 National Spelling Bee

has been an eye opener with as many as six out of the seven finalists being from South Asia! The co-champions Vanya Shivashankar and Gokul Venkatachalam have continued the legacy of their prede JULY 2015 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

cessors, making it hard to believe that this phenomenon is a mere coincidence. Incidentally there are quite a few scholars who have researched the reasons for the unstoppable success of Indian American youth in such competitions. Shalini Shankar is an academian working as Associate Professor of Anthropology and Asian-American studies. Through her interactions with the spelling bee participants and their families, she discovered ways in which the immigrant culture has positively influenced their dominance in “brain” sports. The majority of competition spellers come from India and neighboring countries, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. At the final stages however, it is primarily the Indian American kids who make it to the top. These children are typically born to parents who are first generation immigrants from 32

India. Shankar feels that the winning trend is not something that is premeditated or strategized and is therefore not keen to call it “dominance.” Instead, she believes it has more to do with the way their parents are raising them and encouraging them to be passionate about learning new things. Immigrant Indian parents are also mostly well-educated, and they actively encourage their children to nurture a love for words and language. Besides emphasizing the importance of education, these South Asian families encourage their children to engage in extracurricular activities, some of which are today being called “brain sports.” So while they are not playing soccer or baseball, they are constantly preparing themselves for a variety of academic competitions. Another factor that works to the chil dren’s advantage is that their parents

are mostly professionals like doctors and engineers who naturally place a far higher importance on contests they believe are directed at securing their child’s future. Those winning these competitions have tasted success also because they themselves have the urge to learn the language - not simply because their parents are forcing them. These participants read extensively and spend hours learning new words in the dictionary. This is more of an everyday habit for these youngsters, and they enjoy preparing for such contests during their free time after school. So, it is really an ongoing learning process for these kids who are keen to become a part of the mainstream. Whether the trend will continue or not among third or fourth generation Indian Americans remains to be seen.

Diabetes: Leading Cause of Mortality in South Asian Community By: Saira Gillani, ND

What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a disease that occurs when a person’s body doesn’t make enough of the hormone insulin or can’t use insulin properly. There are 2 types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when your body’s pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas either doesn’t produce enough insulin or your body’s cells ignore the insulin. Between 90% and 95% of people who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

the increased burden of disease in this population. Therefore, we must do all that we can do reduce our sugar and processed carbohydrate intake. Eating right for diabetes comes down to three things: What you eat. When you eat. How much you eat.

Diabetes in the South Asian Community Type 2 diabetes is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the South Asian Community. While all ethnic groups are affected, the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is extremely high and is continuing to rise rapidly. Innate biological factors, coupled with rapid changes in physical activity, diet, and other lifestyle behaviors are contributing factors in 44

ic rice, gluten free grain bread, or organic corn tortillas.

• Doctors recommend a diet to lower your blood sugar. The pancreas simply doesn’t create enough insulin to digest all the sugar, and the blood sugar rises when you have diabetes, so a low-sugar diet helps correct this. Opt for Organic Agave Nectar or Natural Stevia as a sugar substitute. Avoid low calorie sweeteners including sweet and low, equal, and anything that consists of aspartame, as these will cause you to overeat and crave sweets. • Plan Meals and Snacks with a Glycemic Index. You can either count carbohydrates or use a glycemic index that measures the amount of sugar in foods and snacks. Your goal is to maintain the blood-sugar level at a low, so you need to keep the sugar and carbohydrate level down. Focus on a high protein, high vegetable, low carbohydrate diet. Try avoiding white rice and white bread. Instead, substitute these with brown organJULY 2015 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

• Cut your Portion Size. Eating a few meals over several sittings can be a huge benefit to stabilizing the blood-sugar level. The body has a need for a slower, more constant flow of energy that doesn’t explode all at once. Choose a planned time to eat three meals and three snacks and stick to the plan. Create a schedule and prepare meals and snacks ahead of time to make it easy for you to stick to your schedule. • Add Fiber. Fiber, like that found in green vegetables, is soluble and is excellent for those with diabetes. Everyone benefits from this type of fiber since it actually slows the absorption of the sugar (glucose) in the intestines.

45

• Take Supplements: Chromium picolinate: 200 mcg of chromium daily, Organic Chia Seed: 2-3 tablespoons per day as a natural source of fiber, Cinnamon: ½ teaspoon per day.

Worldwide poverty among children is a huge dilemma facing our generation today. Locally 1 in 4 children go without adequate nutrition but the problem is much worse globally. I witnessed firsthand the plight of children in Kenya where I volunteered to provide meals for an impoverished primary school. Since these meals were the only food they had all day, it meant that the kids would stay in school instead of pursuing a life of petty crime and child labor. Locally, I bought, then refurbished and resold articles at garage sales to raise 10,000 meals for the hungry and distributed them through Feeding America. Although my meager efforts are simply a grain in the silo of food that is needed we all need to do our part to combat this very solvable issue. What is your little-known talent ? Nine months ago, my neighbor referred me to a woman who prepares immigration papers. She charged me $4000 to apply for my greencard. I paid her the money, but until now, I have not received anything from immigration. When I went to the office that did the paperwork, it was closed. The telephone number I had for the woman that did the paperwork is disconnected. I would like to find out what is going on with my immigration case or get my money back. How do I do that? Unfortunately, it appears that you have fallen victim to a scam. If you had hired an actual licensed attorney to help with your immigration case, you would be able to find that attorney through the state bar association. When you pay someone who is not an licensed attorney, you have little or no recourse against them. Attorneys will put their name and address in the “preparer” section of the immigration form. Non-lawyer forms “preparers” never do that, so you cannot go after them. There is no way of knowing if the person whom you hired to prepare your case actually prepared it and sent it to Immigration or if she just took your money and did nothing. Based on what you have told me, I 60

am not sure whether you even qualify for a green card. You may try contacting the police to report the situation, but even the police may not be able to find the person. The name the woman told you might not even be her real name. You will probably never recover the money. Hopefully, this person did not file your case with fraudulent documents or information that could later get you into trouble. Next time you have an important legal matter, such as a green card filing, seek the help of a licensed attorney. Most people would never think of performing surgery on themselves, and would not hesitate to hire a qualified doctor. Yet, many people follow the advice of non-lawyers on immigration leading to disastrous results. Make sure the person you ask to help is a real attorney. Check out their qualifications with the state bar. Make sure the attorney has experience with immigration law. After I get my US citizenship, how long can I travel outside the United States? US citizen can remain outside the US for as long as he/ she likes, and may always come back. You may travel for a day, a month, a year or a decade. That is the benefit

of US citizenship. If your US passport expires while you are outside the US, you may renew the passport at a US embassy in whatever country you are I would like to apply for citizenship. I have been a permanent resident since 2005, but in 2011 I was stopped by security at Marshall’s. I was there with my mom, who was buying some clothes . I took a small item and was meaning to give it to the cashier together with my mom’s things, but I got involved in a heated discussion with her and accidentally put the item in my pocket. The police were called and they gave me a ticket to go to court. I was never actually arrested. I went to court and the case was dismissed after I had to take a class. Can I apply for citizenship now or do I have to wait? In order to apply for citizenship, you need to show good moral character for five years before the day that you file the application. If you have been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude, such as theft or fraud, within five years of the application, you will be denied citizenship. However, your shoplifting case might not count as a “conviction”, depending on the way the court “dismissed” it. the disposition of the case and take it to your lawyer. Even if your lawyer determines that the case will not count as a “conviction, you will still need to submit the certified copies to the USCIS examiner. If you have ever been arrested or ticketed for any crime, it is important that you speak to an immigration attorney before applying for citizenship, because some crimes may lead to not only a denial of citizenship, but the initiation of removal proceedings. On the other hand, some case that seem serious in criminal court may not be a problem at all. That is why it is important to see a lawyer first. I am a UK citizen. I don’t need to a visa to came to the US. I entered on the ESTA and at the airport was allowed to stay for 90 days. Can I extend the time I am allowed to stay in the US? What if I leave after 91 days? You entered the US under the visa waiver program. What that means is that citizens of certain countries are permitted to visit the United States without obtaining a visa, as long as the visit is no more than 90 days, and the visitor has no past problems with immigration. This benefit comes with limitations. You cannot extend your permission to stay in the US or change to another status. The minute you overstay, even if by one hour, you will lose the right to use the visa waiver program to reenter the United States and you will have to go to a US consulate to obtain a visa. The advice in this column may not apply to your specific situation, even if it seems similar in nature. The

only way to obtain legal advice is by speaking with a qualified attorney and reviewing your specific circumstances. If you have any questions, please call me at (954) 522-4115.
