Edito r’s View Dear Readers, We are tremendously excited to feature very interesting articles this month covering a wide variety of topics from the Ukraine crisis to a review of the recently released movie The Kashmir Files to a remembrance of the Jallianwalla Baugh massacre. First, let me talk about The Kashmir Files movie and the Jallianwalla Baugh massacre. Both incidents have one thing in common. The Kashmir Files reminds us of the genocide of the Kashmiri Hindu Pandits caused by terrorists while the Jallianwalla Baugh massacre reminds us of the atrocity caused by the evil British Empire to innocent men, women, and children. Similarities end there. There are numerous political parties, along with most of the Bollywood stars, who do not like The Kashmir Files movie. The reason they are giving is that the movie creates a rift between two particular communities. However, they are forgetting that the movie is not talking about the whole community; instead, it talks specifically about terrorists. I am sure nobody, including Bollywood stars, wants to support terrorists in any shape or form. Let me bring up another point. All these years, Bollywood has been making movies where the Hindu community is clearly being bashed and ridiculed, but the feelings of the Hindu community haven’t been a topic of discussion until now. The irony is that the majority of the population of India is Hindu. To expose the hypocrisy of the Bollywood industry, we are presenting one article on Anti-Hindu Sentiment in Bollywood. If you read this article which has cited special incidents in our Hindi movies, you will realize how Hinduism is degraded right in front of our eyes. Now let me talk about the Jallianwalla Baugh massacre. I am not sure why the same Bollywood industry which has made blockbuster movies like Lagan cannot make movies based on real incidents like the Jallianwalla Baugh massacre or Salt March. I also wonder why we cannot make more movies about the atrocities caused by the evil British Empire in the same way the Jewish community makes movies about the Holocaust. Enough of Bollywood!! Next… the Ukraine crisis. We all know it is a humanity crisis, and the whole world is being affected in one way or another. Our natural instinct is to blame President Putin and rightfully so. I am sure a major chunk of blame lies on his shoulder. However, if we read the fine print, and especially European and Asian media, we may see some different points of view. I am sure all of you know that India is not condemning Russia for the attack on Ukraine. Before you jump and blame Prime Minister Modi, please read our article “In Defense of India’s Stand on the Ukraine Crisis.” Some of you may not agree with the views indicated in the articles, so we encourage you to give us feedback via comments or full articles. Please send your comments and/or articles to editor@deshvidesh.com Now let’s talk about an individual who has changed the lives of millions of people, not only in India but all over the world: Pramukh Swami Maharaj of BAPS. I agree wholeheartedly with what Swami Vivek Murthy Das wrote in his article, “The Epitome of Compassion,” This year, as we celebrate Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s centennial year, may our celebrations of his compassion help to bring more compassion in our lives, helping us be more considerate, more kind, more loving. Now, let me turn to a topic in which I have acquired interest since we started the Sa Ni Dha Pa Live program: Indian classical music. The world renowned violinist and composer, L. Shankar, is coming to South Florida. Our local violinist and composer, Sanjay Chandran, who was inspired by L. Shankar has written a very informative article on the prominent artist. Our last and definitely most important topic… let me remind all of you about our two My Shadi Bridal expos, one on Sunday, May 1, 2022, in Fort Lauderdale and one on Sunday, May 15, 2022, in Orlando. Till then Be safe and Be happy! Raj Shah Managing Editor

The Epitome of Compassion Vivekmurtidas Swami, BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha

T

he COVID-19 Pandemic will forever be remembered as a period of isolation, distancing, and change. Along with our longing to get back to “normal,” we hoped for peace and normalcy around the world. Unfortunately, peace continues to evade many parts of the world. Daily headlines are peppered with numerous instances of interpersonal, community-related and mass-scale violence. The missing element in these stories is always compassion. Without compassion, society devolves into a state of chaos, as evidenced through multiple genocides and atrocities throughout human history. Compassion is a necessity, not a luxury. Without it, humanity cannot survive. Yet, the virtue remains elusive. As individualism grows, so does the chase for personal success, pleasure, fame, and fortune. This personal chase often comes at the cost of selflessness and compassion. But compassion still exists. There are lamps of hope in the overwhelming darkness. These brave individuals put aside their interests to live a life focused on improving the plight of others. Now more than ever, society needs such role models.

Natural Compassion For some, compassion develops through time as one matures and sees a more global vision. For some, it emerges as an outcome of a painful experience. For a few, it

is inherent. His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s compassion was not inspired by a life-changing or tragic incident that transformed his life. His loving and genuinely compassionate nature was innate to him. His eyes craved to see every single person happy, and his heart had space for each soul – even from childhood. His heart was the heart that loved every being. This compassion towards all was as natural to him as breathing.

“ In the Joy of others, lies our own. In the progress of others, rests our own. In the good of others abides our own. ” In the Joy of Others... These words are not merely a credo or tagline given by Pramukh Swami Maharaj; it was his lifestyle. This mantra also became the guiding principle for his followers. It was not enough to just tolerate and forgive, to merely wish well for others; rather, it was imperative to contribute to their success. This was compassion in action, not just sympathy or even empathy. Feeling for others is one thing, but acting is another. Success, happiness, and spiritual progress are only possible through

sacrifice, forgiveness, and collective advancement. Individuals cannot progress without the collective progress and happiness of all members of society. Pramukh Swami Maharaj delivered this same message at the United Nations Millennium World Peace Summit in the summer of 2000 in New York. His remarks were applauded by world leaders and religious leaders alike. When asked why this was remarkable, one spiritual leader said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life is an extraordinary example of love and harmony. If the entire nation were to take a cue from him and live by those standards, it would solve all of our problems.” Indeed, the answer to many of the challenges we face in the world lies in cultivating compassion in our lives.

Beyond Boundaries Pramukh Swami Maharaj dedicated his entire life to bettering the lives of every person he came across. No one was to be left behind. Not only was every member of society deserving of love, respect, and dignity, but they deserved the same level of compassion. This eye of empathy and generosity extended to those well outside of his immediate circle of followers, or community of Hindus and well-wishers. This compassion led him to organize a massive humanitarian effort after the 1979 Morbi Dam collapse in Gujarat, India.

He knew that the most gravely affected members of the community were Muslims and Dalits. He wanted to make sure that they were cared for in a way that allowed them to follow their own traditions and religious practices. He went to Morbi and walked through the mud-covered streets to distribute supplies and food grains. He instructed volunteers to construct closed tent- and tinstyle bathrooms rather than their much simpler makeshift restrooms so that victims would have privacy. These facilities were to be used by all, regardless of their stature or beliefs. True compassion knows no boundaries. Here’s a video of the event - https://baps.sl/morbi

Compassion Beyond Comprehension Perhaps the hardest test of compassion is when you are the victim of someone’s attack. Instinct teaches us to retaliate – at least to protect ourselves. In 2002, the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Gandhinagar, India, fell victim to a brutal terrorist attack. Two terrorists left 33 dead and over 80 injured. No one could have even imagined such an incident taking place at such a blissful and peaceful temple of God. People in India and around the world were stunned to hear reports that innocent pilgrims and worshippers, as well as brave soldiers, were wounded or worse. In the aftermath, people throughout India were hurt and angry. Many were instinctively asking for retaliation. However, Pramukh Swami Maharaj made a heartfelt public appeal for peace and stability that echoed around the country and the world. His call averted waves of angry mobs and prevented countless, needless more deaths. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s response has been studied as an exemplary case by several international peacekeeping missions and dubbed as “The Akshardham Response.” When he first visited the temple after the attack, he visited the sites where the shootings

of believers, non-believers, and everyone in between. He has created a community of humans who live to bring joy to others. These lessons of compassion, empathy, and love translate into everyday life in schools, the workplace, and in families and homes.

had occurred. He chanted in prayer for the souls of the deceased. When the prayers concluded, he asked to go to the exact location where the two terrorists had been shot. He added: “Though they attacked innocent pilgrims, we must not allow their hate to overcome our love. Take me there. I want to pray for the peace and redemption of their souls as well.” It was not just the “Akshardham Response” that was studied and that inspired many; Pramukh Swami’s whole life has been a lesson. These lessons have inspired others to imbibe his virtues in their lives. These lessons, his spiritual belief, and practices are not informational material used for brochures and websites but a transformational manual to live by.

Compassion That Inspires Pramukh Swami Maharaj practiced what he preached, touching the hearts of millions and, more importantly, inspiring people even today. The depth and breadth of his selfless love and compassion have survived decades and great geographic distance, nurturing a community

He is the inspiration for young school students raising funds through various campaigns towards blood drives and other humanitarian causes. He is the inspiration for a young boy in Flushing, New York, to walk to school every day so that, from the bus fare he saves, he can buy lunch for one of his less fortunate classmates. He is the inspiration for a young college-bound student to give up his scholarship to someone who is less financially fortunate than he is. He is the inspiration for a young gynecologist in Bryan, Texas, to dedicate free office hours for uninsured expecting mothers so that they can have access to quality healthcare. He is the inspiration for a professional musician and travel agent in Chino Hills, California, to donate all the income he makes as a musician to humanitarian and spiritual causes for the past 20 years. The list of those inspired by him to think and act with compassion can go on and on.

those battling the Coronavirus, and helped administer COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots to over 36,000 people.

Celebrate Compassion Sarve bhavantu sukhinaha, sarve santu niraamayaa | Sarve bhadraani pashyantu, maa kashchid-dukha-bhaagbhavet || May all be happy. May all be free from illness. May all see what is auspicious. May no one suffer. If these Sanskrit words from the Upanishads form a prayer of compassion, then Pramukh Swami Maharaj was truly the epitome of compassion; he not only prayed but also persevered until his last breath to bring each word of that prayer to life. This year, as we celebrate his centennial year, may our celebrations of his compassion help to bring more compassion in our lives, helping us be more considerate, more kind, and more loving.

Inspired by the teaching of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, during the COVID-19 pandemic, BAPS Charities provided over 175,000 pieces of personal protective equipment, donated over $300,000 in financial assistance, delivered over 90,000 meals, food and care packages to

Film Review: The Kashmir Files

I

ndian cinema has not seen an attempt of this kind before. It is not the socalled “Real Life Story in Celluloid.” Rather, it is the reality that has been presented in celluloid without the coating of glamour, melodrama, or imagination. The Kashmir Files is a film that makes the viewers aware of what exactly happened in the picturesque Kashmir Valley in 1990 and how terrorism brutally monitored the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits making all the wings of administration defunct. The film depicts how ruthlessly these Kashmiri Hindus were driven out of their motherland and never allowed to resettle. Director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri narrates the inhumane killings as well as the sufferings of the Kashmiri Hindus with sincere honesty that will leave viewers feeling the pain and distress experienced by the Hindus in their own place. Not only that, but it also depicts the cruelty of the then administration under the leadership of Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah who virtually led this ethnic cleansing. The story revolves around the Kashmiri Pandit, Pushkar Nath Pandit, and his family facing the ordeal of genocide, atrocities, and extreme torture by the Jihadi terrorists. For example, his son was killed and his daughter-in-law was forced to eat food soaked with her husband’s blood. Brahma Dutt, an IAS officer played by Mithun Chakraborty, and DGP Harinarayan played by Puneeth Issar, are examples of government officials who silently witnessed the killings. Pushkar Nath was spared from the killings and his grandson Krishna Pandit, an infant then, grew up unaware of the sufferings of his parents and the entire class of Hindu Pandits in Kashmir. He joined the University in Delhi named ANU (changed the name in the film from JNU or Jawaharlal Nehru University) and found himself under the influence of Professor Radhika Menon, a self-styled secular and Left intellectual supporting terrorism

In 2016, during JNU protests, Nivedita Menon gave her infamous lecture on nationalist principles and Kashmir becoming a part of the Union of India. A glimpse of that lecture is also shown in the movie The Kashmir Files.

in the name of ‘Azaadi’. The character of Radhika Menon played by Pallavi Joshi is based on Nivedita Menon, Professor of Political Thought at JNU and a Feminist Scholar. Krishna joins the student election under the influence of Radhika Menon. However, after the death of his grandfather Pushkar Nath, he visits their ancestral place to spread his ashes as per his last wish and comes to know the truth about what happened in the 1990s. He comes back and gives a speech for university presidential elections and narrates the truth of the sufferings of his family. The performance of the cast is a valuable highlight that gives life to this film. Anupam Kher as Pushkar Nath Pandit gives a performance that will be remembered through the ages. Being a Pandit in real life, he depicts the character with his talent and feeling. Darshan Kumar as Krishna Pandit, Pallavi Joshi as Radhika Menon, Mithun Chakraborty as Brahma Dutt, and Puneeth Issar as DGP Harinarayan all give excellent support to the film.

22

The Kashmir Files is a film that makes the viewers aware of what exactly happened in the picturesque Kashmir Valley in 1990 and how terrorism brutally monitored the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits making all the wings of administration defunct. The film has some dialogue that aroused nationalistic feelings among the audience and prompted the vital question of how such a brutal incident could occur in a place that is within the Indian Territory. The courageous director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri dared to show certain sides of the incident, such as the silence of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, approval of the then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and Central Home Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, and the

unimaginably malicious incidents like the merciless killings of 25 people, ripping clothes off Hindu women in public, and so on. The film is a must-watch for all Indians. It evokes a feeling of disregard as well as conscious resentment of terrorism. This bold film has raised expectations from the talented filmmaker for digging out more truth for the benefit of ‘New India’.

Who is Nivedita Menon? Meet The Real Radhika Menon Of The Kashmir Files Who is Nivedita Menon? Nivedita Menon is currently a professor of Political Science in Feminist theory, Political theory, and comparative politics at Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU. Previously, she was associated with Lady Shri Ram College of Delhi University. Her strong communist thinking is the primary reason she is known in the world today. This thinking has also led her to recite various anti-national slogans in the past and speak out against the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2016, during JNU protests, Nivedita Menon gave her infamous lecture on nationalist principles and Kashmir becoming a part of the Union of India. A glimpse of that lecture is also shown in the movie The Kashmir Files. In her lecture, she said that India has illegally occupied Kashmir.

24

A police complaint was filed against her by ABVP’s members after this. When the matter got out of hand, Menon claimed to have made no such remarks against India. On another occasion, during a lecture, she called Hinduism the most radical religion in the world. She also said Hindu society is the most violent society in the world. She makes such allegations without any proof or research. She also called out the Uniform Civil Code as anti-Muslim.

In defense of India’s Foreign Policy in the midst of the Ukrainian Crisis By Amrit Hallan There has been quite a brouhaha in the West, especially in the US, regarding India’s strategic silence over what is happening between Russia and Ukraine. The Modi government hasn’t openly called it an invasion. It isn’t participating in the onslaught of sanctions that the NATO countries and the US vessels are imposing on Russia. In a recent White House statement, President Biden has termed India’s response as “somewhat shaky” while praising Quad and NATO countries. There is a long list of reasons for India’s refusal to vote in favor of a UN resolution condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. This has been a sign of India’s historical friendship

26

since India’s Independence. India’s dependence on Russian weapons is not the only reason why India has refused to condemn Russia. India’s stand is based on accurate calculations. To the further vexation of the West, India is importing crude oil from Russia in greater quantities

and at discounted rates, and both the countries are also talking about trading in rupees rather than dollars. Historically, India and Russia have been close allies. Whereas the rest of the world has stood on Pakistan’s side on many vital issues, Russia has vetoed UNSC resolutions over Kashmir to keep it a bilateral

India and Russia have been close allies. Whereas the rest of the world has stood on Pakistan’s side on many vital issues, Russia has vetoed UNSC resolutions over Kashmir to keep it a bilateral issue which has been India’s long-lasting stand. APRIL 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

issue which has been India’s longlasting stand. Similarly, when China infiltrated Ladakh, except the counted countries like Russia, most of the western countries remained silent. The USA hasn’t exactly been friendly to India’s interests in the past. During the historic IndoPakistani War in which Bangladesh was freed from the maniacal Pakistani army, the US committed the blunder of sending the Seventh Fleet’s Task Force 74, a warship laden with the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Enterprise, towards the Bay of Bengal. This move was to provide strategic support to the Pakistani military. More than 100,000 Pakistani soldiers were trapped between the Indian Army and the Bay of Bengal. Despite her faults, Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, had the foresight to sign an IndoSoviet Friendship Treaty just before mounting an attack on East Pakistan. In response to the US adventure in the Bay of Bengal, Russia dispatched a submarine armed with nuclear warheads, which forced the US fleet to back down. The US has had a long history of imposing sanctions against India. India’s entire cryogenic technology was allegedly sabotaged by the CIA in collusion with the UPA government of that time although the investigations

28

are still going on. Recently, after creating a mess in the war-ravaged country, the US government has handed over Afghanistan to the Taliban-Pakistan alliance, causing further strategic problems for India. Similarly, in 1998, Ukraine had condemned India’s nuclear tests and supported sanctions against India,

Russia is also India’s biggest arms supplier. India is building BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles with Russia. In December 2021, Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin signed a litany of trade and arms deals. This also includes a 10-year military and technical cooperation program under which the Indian government will manufacture nearly half a million Kalashnikov assault rifles for Russia. India also sees Russia as a counterforce against China. Presently China and historically Russia have been communist countries and, consequently, much closer and accommodating to each other. Just like India, China, too, has shown a guarded stand in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In the case of a direct conflict between India and

evacuation of its students and citizens from Ukraine is being hailed the world over, there have been reports of attempts to hold Indian civilians hostage back in Ukraine because India has not condemned Russia. Draconian measures such as firing gunshots in the air, beating people with batons, and ramming cars and vans into groups of students are reported to have been used to instill fear among the students.

China, India sees Russia as a potent intermediary. India’s stand is also guarded because many in the world believe that Russia has been pushed against the wall and has been forced to carry out “special military operations” to prevent it from falling into NATO’s arms. It has been Russia’s contention for many years that the US is trying to surround it from all sides by taking

30

all the small countries, especially countries that belong to the former USSR, into NATO’s fold. It isn’t about natural resources. It isn’t about oil. In a recent press conference, India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said, “The situation in Ukraine is the result of a complex chain of circumstances over the last thirty years. Most countries, such as India and France, which are very active, are seeking a diplomatic solution.” When asked why India has not condemned Russia in the current conflict, Jaishankar added, “The real question is: are you mobilized to find a good solution or are you content with posturing? India can talk with Russia, with other countries within the UN security council and support initiatives like those of France.”

o, what is the truth? “satyameva jayate”, says the Mundaka Upanishad. Truth alone prevails. Who would disagree? As the ancients would remark, “nissandeha”, without doubt. But what is truth? Is it my truth or your truth? Is there such a thing as universal truth? Is the opposite of truth, falsehood? Is truth related to facts? To verifiable data? Or could it be archetypal? The truth of intentions?

I don’t know. But our rich itihas makes us arrive at a sophisticated understanding by taking us back to the ideas of our forefathers and foremothers. These ancient stories are an invitation to engage in the search for answers that will always be current and relevant. Because they help us understand life and our role in it. Which is why they remain alive and vibrant in our collective imagination. Consider the state of other ancient civilisations. Thor( the Germanic god) has been banished from Scandinavia, the Sun god, Ra’s has set in Egypt and Zeus lies buried in the snow at Mount Olympus. But stories of Lord Rama reign strong in India; Lord Krishna continues to entice and the magnificent Lord Shiva, has not ceased his dancing in the precincts

The stories of our gods and goddesses have constantly evolved, retaining the best of the old, but adding in the attractiveness of the new.

But why did this not happen in India? According to me, it was due to our genius for modernizing and localizing our myths. Let me make my proposition with one of our most popular epics, the Ramayana. A television serial in the 1980s modernized Lord Rama’s story to our age. The series was based largely on the Ramcharitmanas written by sage Tulsidas in the 16th century; but Tulsidasji himself had made significant changes from the original

Modern day renditions of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana incorporate the original values of righteousness, love and compassion, while showcasing them with contemporary elements like 3D figurines and state of-the -art light and sound systems, for example, this still from a play on Lord Krishna’s life

civilisations such as Greece and Egypt. But I would guard against this hubris. No doubt, our stories are delightful. But so are the Greek myths of Zeus and his cohort from Olympus; and just as magnificent and profound in their meaning. The hammer-wielding Thor was an inspiring figure from Norse mythology (some believe that Thursday’s root is actually Thor’s day). Why did these powerful gods retreat into anonymity?

A lazy analysis might suggest that our culture and stories are rich in comparison to those of other ancient

I believe it is because they lost their relevance in the lives of their people.

Valmiki Ramayana, thus modernizing the story of Lord Rama for the time that he lived in. The Kamba Ramayana from the South, localized the epic to the sensibilities of the 12th century. There are possibly hundreds of versions of the Ramayana across Asia, in which the core thoughts have remained the same, but the body that encases them has been tweaked to suit changing times. Thus, the stories of our gods and goddesses have constantly evolved, retaining the best of the old, but adding in the attractiveness of

of our hearts. An Akhand Ramayan reading in an Indian household slows time even in these busy times and Indians never tire of dissecting the confounding characters of the Mahabharata. Why are most ancient civilisations left holding the soulless shell of their primordial heritage in the palm of their hands, while in India we remain endlessly enticed by the vibrant kernel of these millennia-old memories that continue to guide our everyday lives? In simple terms, why are we among the very few ancient cultures that are still alive?

the new, therefore keeping our itihas relevant, ever-contemporary and alive. Consider the Mahabharata, which pulls us away from the lure of judgment into the welcoming arms of compassion and understanding; where nuance becomes possible. We see weaknesses in the Pandavas too, and strengths in the Kauravas as well. We are confused by Lord Krishna and confounded that even Shakuni (an extremely intelligent but devious character from the Mahabharata) had a story that made him crave, some might hold, understandable vengeance. And yet, had the Kauravas won and the Pandavas lost, something would have not seemed right…

The debate goes on, and life still bemuses. Our struggles go on, and only the deepest corners of the heart know whether our actions are fuelled by ego or love. The Mahabharata eschews an easy understanding. The Gita offers answers, but also some questions. Doubts are good, though, for they spur the spirit of investigation, if navigated with wisdom. It takes a mature and wise individual to truly understand our texts. For they do not treat you like

a child who needs definitive orders; instead they treat you as an adult, who needs encouragement to evolve. This spirit of evolution opens the space for respect for different truths; which is the ultimate guarantor of liberalism. And liberalism opens the space for evolution. It is a circle; a circle that has kept our ancient culture alive. Therefore, our itihas stays alive, because religion and liberalism have not been historically at war in India. Consequently, different religions

These ancient stories, these epics, are an invitation to engage in the search for answers that will always be current and relevant. 36

Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Editor’s Note

Introduction

April 13,1919, will be the date Indians of my generation will never forget. And if the younger generation does not know or does not remember, I would like to remind them through this article. It was the day when The Jallianwala Bagh massacre occurred and more than 500 Men, Women and small children died because of the evil British Empire. I am not sure why every Indian and Indian Media in India as well as all over the world is not talking about it same way every jewish person and media talks about holocast. Raj Shah Managing Editor

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre marked a turning point in India’s struggle for Independence. A memorial was set up by the Government of India in 1951 at Jallianwala Bagh to commemorate the spirit of Indian revolutionaries and the people who lost their lives in the brutal massacre.

an incident that happened with a multitude of factors working in the background. To understand what transpired on April 13, 1919, one must look at the events preceding it. The Indian National Congress had assumed self-governance would be granted once WWI ended but

It stands as a symbol of struggle and sacrifice and continues to instill patriotism amongst the youth. In March 2019, the Yaad-eJallian Museum was inaugurated, showcasing an authentic account of the massacre.

the Imperial bureaucracy had other plans. The Rowlatt Act (Black Act) was passed on March 10, 1919, authorizing the government to imprison or confine, without a trial, any person associated with seditious activities. This led to nationwide unrest. Gandhi initiated Satyagraha to protest against the Rowlatt Act. On April 7, 1919, Gandhi published an article called Satyagrahi, describing ways to oppose the Rowlatt Act. The British authorities discussed amongst themselves the actions to be taken against Gandhi and any other leaders who were participating in the Satyagraha. Orders were issued to prohibit Gandhi from entering Punjab and to arrest him if he disobeyed the orders.

Representation In:

Sir Michael O’ Dwyer, the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab (1912-1919), suggested that Gandhi be deported to Burma but this was opposed by his fellow officials as they felt it might instigate the public. Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr Satyapal, the two prominent leaders who were a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity, organised a peaceful protest against the Rowlatt Act in Amritsar. On April 9, 1919, Ram Navami was being celebrated when O’ Dwyer issued orders to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Irving to arrest Dr Satyapal and Dr Kitchlew. The following extract from the Amrita Bazar Patrika, dated 19th November, 1919, talks about the witness account of Mr Irving in front of the Hunter Commission and highlights the mindset of the British authorities: “He (Irving) was directed by the Government of Sir Michael O’Dwyer to deport Dr Kichlew and Satyapal. He knew that such an act would lead to a popular outburst. He also knew that none of these popular leaders favoured violence. He invited the two gentlemen to his house on the morning of April 10th and they unsuspectingly

responded to the call no doubt relying on his honour as an Englishman. But after they had been under his roof for half an hour as his guests, they were caught hold of, and removed towards Dharmasala under police escort! Mr Irving told this story without showing any sign of having done an act which very few Englishmen would care to do.” On April 10, 1919, the infuriated protestors marched to the Deputy Commissioner’s residence to demand the release of their two leaders. Here they were fired upon without any provocation. Many people were wounded and killed. After passing the Rowlatt Act, the Punjab Government set out to suppress all opposition. On April 13, 1919, the public had gathered to celebrate Baisakhi at Jallianwala Bagh, where two resolutions were to be discussed, one condemning the firing on April 10 and the other requesting the authorities to release their leaders. When the news reached him Brigadier-General Dyer, headed to the Bagh with his troops. He entered the Bagh, deployed his troops and ordered them to open fire without

On March 13, 1940, at Caxton Hall in London, Udham Singh, an Indian freedom fighter, killed O’Dwyer who had approved of Dyer’s action and was believed to have been the main planner in the incident. Thus, Jallianwala Bagh was the initial spark that led to the Independence of India.

giving any warning. People rushed to the exits but Dyer directed his soldiers to fire at the exit. The firing continued for 10-15 minutes. 1650 rounds were fired. The firing ceased only after the ammunition had run out. The total estimated figure of the dead as given by General Dyer and Mr Irving was 291. However, other reports including that of a committee headed by Madan Mohan Malviya put the figure of dead at over 500.

Post Jallianwala Bagh Two days after the massacre, Martial Law was clamped down on five districts - Lahore, Amritsar, Gujranwala, Gujarat and Lyallpore. The declaration of Martial Law was to empower the Viceroy to direct immediate trial by courtmartial of any person involved in the revolutionary activities. As the news of the massacre spread across the nation, Tagore renounced his Knighthood.

Hunter Commission On October 14, 1919, the Disorders Inquiry Committee was formed to inquire about the massacre. It later came to be known as the Hunter Commission. The Hunter Commission was directed to announce their verdict on the justifiability, or otherwise, of the steps taken by the government. All the British officials involved in the administration during the disturbances in Amritsar were interrogated including General Dyer and Mr Irving. The following extract shows Dyer’s unapologetic attitude towards the massacre:

The Martyr’s Well - This well, located inside the premises of the Jallianwala Bagh, stands testimony to the brutal killings of innocent who jumped into it in panic to save themselves from the firing. 120 dead bodies were later recovered from the well. 44

Question - After firing took place, did you take any measures to attend to the wounded? Answer - No, certainly not. It was not my job. Hospitals were open and they should have gone there.

General Dyer’s actions on the day of the Massacre received a prompt acknowledgement from Sir Michael O’ Dwyer who at once wired to him: “Your action is correct. LieutenantGovernor approves.” Both Dyer and Dwyer faced violent criticism from various newspapers who gave their own accounts of the brutal massacre. The evidence General Dyer presented before the Hunter Committee stood as a confession of the brutal act he committed.

O’ Dwyer’s Assassination On March 13 1940, at Caxton Hall in London, Udham Singh, an Indian freedom fighter, killed Michael O’Dwyer who had approved Dyer’s action and was believed to have been the main planner. Thus, Jallianwala Bagh was the initial

spark that led to the Independence of India. It was a tragedy for both the sufferers and the colonial rulers. It revealed a fatal flaw in their assumptions and attitude. Eventually, it led to their departure from the land which they had hoped to rule for centuries.

The Committee indicated the massacre as one of the darkest episodes of the British Administration. The Hunter Commission in 1920 censured Dyer for his actions. The Commander-in-Chief directed Brigadier-General Dyer to resign from his appointment as Brigade Commander and informed him that he would receive no further employment in India as mentioned in the letter by Montagu to his Excellency.

Frequently asked questions on B’s and H-1B’s By Seth Finberg

I was told that some registrants in the H-1B lottery have a better chance of selection. Is this true? The H-1B lottery is a random lottery and is therefore nationality neutral. Unlike the “Green Card Lottery” (Diversity Visa Lottery) or the Immigrant Visa Bulletin, the H-1B lottery does not consider where you were born or even what passport you hold. However, there is a benefit if you have an advanced degree from a U.S. University. If you hold an accredited U.S. Master’s or PhD., you do have a slightly better chance of selection. Of the 85,000 H-1B visas allocated every year, 65,000 of them are for anyone from any country with any qualifying educational background. Twenty thousand H-1Bs are set aside for those with advanced U.S. degrees. Additionally, there is no distinction or inherent advantage based on salary or wage level. The USCIS was considering showing a preference for H-1B applicants with higher paying jobs but this never came to fruition.

I was selected in this year’s H-1B lottery. What steps come next? What do we have to do? First of all, congratulations on getting selected! With a sky-high number of lottery registrations this year, your chances of selection may have only been around 20 or 30 percent. Now it is time for your sponsor to get to work on your application. Your employer hopefully has already retained a

48

business immigration attorney. If not, your prospective employer should immediately start looking to hire an experienced lawyer for your H-1B petition. Many law firms have already stopped taking new H-1B clients for this year’s “H-1B season” as they only have limited capacity to properly prepare these complicated petitions. Remember, these applications take time, and your completed petition must be submitted by the end of June.

If you are an employer who is ready to fill out an H-1B petition for an employee who was selected in the H-1B lottery, you must satisfy these three prongs: 1. You have or will have an employer/ employee relationship and your company has the ability to pay the prevailing wage determined by your industry and geographic location. 2. The job title is a professional job that is considered a “specialty occupation”. 3. Your employee beneficiary has the necessary qualifications to do the job.

What happens if I was selected in the H-1B lottery?

not

If you were not one of the lucky ones selected and your registration was not initially excluded, you are in an uncomfortable position of uncertainty. Based on past years, there hopefully

will be several other opportunities to get selected in future H-1B lotteries at the end of Q2 or Q3. Of the 85,000 beneficiaries selected in the March lottery, a percentage of them will not receive approved H-1B petitions. Therefore, the USCIS will likely conduct a second H-1B lottery in July/August and possibly even a 3rd lottery to allocate their reserve capacity of unutilized H-1Bs. Employers might be scrambling for alternative avenues to retain their current talent or new visa paths to bring qualified applicants to their companies. Both HR departments and job applicants alike may also want to consider contacting an attorney who specializes in employmentbased immigration to explore other immigration solutions.

I have a U.S. visitor’s visa (B1/B-2) and I wanted to know how long can I stay in the United States and am I able to work while I am here? The vast majority of visitors to the United States on business/tourist visas get an authorized period of stay for 6 months. Your I-94 will show when your authorized period of stay expires. Remember, while your visitor visa may be valid for several more years, your authorized period of stay is generally only 6 months from your date of U.S. entry. Since a B-1/B-2 is a non-immigrant visa, it is important not to stay too long in the U.S. on each trip and certainly not advisable to remain in the U.S. longer than 6 months. The longer you stay in the U.S. the more it starts looking like you live here or are intending to

live here. Just because you can stay here for six months does not mean you should remain here that long. A good rule of thumb is to keep your B-1/B-2 trips on the shorter side and remain outside of the U.S. at least twice as long as you stayed in the U.S. Any amount of time you remain in the U.S. after your authorized period of stay expires will start the clock on your accrual of unlawful presence. If you accrue unlawful presence by overstaying a visa, you can potentially set yourself up for future negative immigration consequences.

and Border Protection (CBP) has the discretion on whether to admit you or not. The CBP officer likely will ask you questions about your previous visits and your plans for your current visit. If they determine you 1) do not have the appropriate non-immigrant intent, 2) have insufficient ties to your home country, or 3) worst case you violated your visa, they may deny your admission. If you have any specific questions on the terms and conditions of your visa it is best to consult with an experienced immigration attorney.

Yes, you can conduct business on a B-1 visa. However, this is different than actually working. You can negotiate a contract, attend a workrelated conference or seminar, and look to purchase or sell a business. Foreign nationals who attempt to work in the U.S. without valid employment authorization can face negative consequences with their visa and immigration status. Remember, every time you attempt to enter the U.S. on your visa, the U.S. Customs

Anti-Hindu Sentiment in Bollywood By Amrit Hallan

A

ccording to a survey done by Professor Dheeraj Sharma of IIM Ahmedabad and his team, in more than 150 schools, 94% of students believe Bollywood’s stereotypical representation is authentic. Those 94% of young minds fall for the propaganda and believe whatever Bollywood depicts as true and part of our History. Bollywood is trying to create an alternate reality rather than showing it. In research done by Professor Dheeraj Sharma, where he included movies and shows from the 1950s to 2010s - in 74% of films, Sikhs are laughable - in 58% of films, corrupt politicians share Hindu Brahmin surnames - in 62% of films, corrupt businessmen had Vaishya surnames. On the contrary, 84% of films show Muslims as deeply religious and honest people. Now, let us look at some specific examples. PK is one of the most popular movies, starring Aamir Khan. Yes, I know plenty has been written on the film but no harm in repeating it. When many Hindus started protesting that in the film, Hindu gods, especially Shiva, are ridiculed, the makers of the film insisted that all religions are questioned in the film and to an extent, they are right. The small

52

difference is whereas all the religions are questioned, Hinduism is ridiculed, and the ridicule is highlighted in a long sequence when one of the greatest Hindu gods, Shiva (a person acting as Shiva in a nautanki, not actual Shiva), is shown crawling under the seats or hiding in a toilet. When the central character of the film PK questions other religions, he is not questioning their gods or making fun of their gods, he is simply questioning the way people try to placate the gods or try to make profit out of people’s blind belief. But when it comes to a Hindu god, the very existence of the gods is questioned, and not just questioned, ridiculed, lampooned. Even the main godman in the end who questions and torments the female character is a Hindu. If you say this is because maybe the female character was a Hindu, then in this case, why not have a Muslim female character or a Christian female character? There was no particular reason for the female character to be a Hindu, just like there is no particular reason for Rishi Kapoor’s character in 102 Not Out to seek solace in a temple rather than a church.

In which Bollywood movie have you seen a Hindu priest or a Hindu sadhu playing a good, benevolent role? Hindu religious men and women are shown to be hoodwinking people, tormenting the lower castes or just being nasty in general. They are never a good or a normal part of the narrative. There is always a negative connotation that leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It is always the subconscious that is the target of such narratives. The first image of a Hindu Brahmin in an old black-and-white movie that I have etched in my mind is that of a child running and colliding into a Brahmin who is reciting slokas, and the Brahmin hurls choicest abuses on the child, because now he would have to take a bath again.

Your conclusion: Nasty, Repulsive Brahmin. In another black-and-white movie, the character played by Lalita Pawar is reciting some Ramayana couplets and at the same time scheming how to usurp the property of her orphaned nephew.

Your conclusion: Chants in Hinduism mean nothing and they don’t carry any spiritual significance. Mostly nasty people chant these religious couplets.

According to a survey done by Professor Dheeraj Sharma of IIM Ahmedabad and his team, in more than 150 schools, 94% of students believe Bollywood’s stereotypical representation is authentic. Those 94% of young minds fall for the propaganda and believe whatever Bollywood depicts as true and part of our History.

You may say that they are showing the duality and the hypocrisy of the character, but why are such duality and hypocrisy shown JUST among Hindu characters in the films and not in any other religion? The convoluted narrative is so alarming that in a recent movie Sherni that was based on true events and real-life individuals, the main villain in real life was a Muslim (Asghar Khan), but in the movie he is shown to be a Hindu who wears the sacred saffron thread on his wrist – this is highlighted multiple times in the movie to make the point. The lady protagonist in the movie is shown to be a Christian whereas in reality, the lady IFS officer who caught Asghar Khan was a Hindu named KM Abharna. Why was there such a pressing need to change the religion of the persons on whose lives the movie was based? In the movie Roti Kapda Aur Makan, when the character played by Maushmi Chatterjee is gang raped, one of the rapists is a saffron-clad holy man. Do they have the guts to show a person looking like a maulvi or a church priest raping someone? In the movie Hichki, the heroine (who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome) is rejected by all Hindusounding characters but is provided help by Christian and Muslimsounding characters.

53

In the movie Guide, crude-looking Brahmins are shown deceiving gullible villagers, but when an Englishspeaking city dweller comes and defeats them in an English-Sanskrit debate, they flee in panic. Most of the sadhus are disguised swindlers looking to steal or molest women. People are cutting the Hindu “choti” in disgust, disappointment, or simply for fun. Characters are performing nasty acts while chanting Hindu religious hymns. The temple is dirty and small, but the mosque or the church is grand and majestic. People behave lampoonish while standing in front of Hindu deities but are very serious and deferential when in a mosque or a church. Examples like these can go and on. Not all depictions are obvious. You need to sensitize yourself and develop a special eye to pick nuances and realize what is going on.

1950s to 2010s shows -in 74% of films, Sikhs are laughable -in 58% of films, corrupt politicians share Hindu Brahmin surnames -in 62% of corrupt businessmen had Vaishya surnames. On the contrary, 84% of films shows that Muslims as deeply religious and honest people. 54

The Bollywood template for creating anti-Hindu movies and TV series Name the characters Ram, Krishna, Shiva, or any other Hindu God and then make other characters call them names, or make the characters named after Hindu gods do nasty things. Show the hero entering the temple or interacting with the deity as if he is doing a favor by coming to the temple. The body language, the smug look on the face, nothing tells that the person has a trace of devotion. A nice person who comes to help the hero or his family is always a Muslim or a Christian. This is highlighted by the way the person plays or through the surroundings. When a destitute child in a movie is adopted, he/she is always adopted or sheltered by a pious Christian or Muslim, never by a pious Hindu. If a kid studies in a good school, it is always a Christian missionary school with fathers and sisters moving around wearing cloaks. A person who speaks fluent English is educated and smart. A person who speaks fluent Urdu is cultured, refined, and literary. A person who speaks fluent Hindi is either a comedian or a conniving, vile person. Make subtle, disparaging remarks regarding what stupid rituals you have or what silly gods you have. Question religious practices and rites when they are taking place, create doubt and in general, create an atmosphere of cynicism around those practices and rites. Show a person misbehaving or doing a very filthy act immediately after praying in front of a Hindu deity or coming out of the temple. Never show a religious Hindu person doing good deeds. Create special circumstances where a person chanting a Hindu prayer is also doing something nasty such as stealing, beating up, or misbehaving. On the other hand, a person chanting a Christian or a Muslim prayer is always dignified and up to some serious work, even if illegal. A good message or an inspiring manifestation comes to the protagonist only in the form of a Christian or a Muslim scripture, never from a Hindu scripture. Make fun of Hindu gods in the name of tolerance and sense of humor but never apply the same yardstick to other religions.

L. Shankar:

World renowned violinist and composer in South Florida By Sanjay Chandran

Shankar has continued to expose the international audience to Indian classical music, often combining Carnatic and Hindustani (North Indian classical genre) styles.

V

iolinists from India are known for fiddling with their fiddles. As early as the 1930s, the legendary Carnatic (South Indian classical genre) musician T. Chowdiah had added an extra string to his violin. Over the years, it was rumored that it may have even included two more strings. However, it is debatable whether this modification enhanced Chowdiah’s formidable skill as a Carnatic violinist. Then, in the 1950s, violinist Ramesh Aniyan tried to deepen the fingerboard and add four additional strings to his violin, but the attempt failed because it made the violin too heavy. Master violinist L. Shankar (aka Shankar) introduced the 10-string double violin in the 1980s, the perfect answer to his

56

quest and one that could account for the whole range of the orchestra’s string section from violin to double bass. When he played on the double violin, the sounds emanating from each violin reinforced one another with tonal haloes whose effect was hallucinating. As a teenager, I vividly remember listening to Shankar play the Carnatic Raga Nadanamakriya on the double violin; in contrast with the plangent, echoing sound of the slow-paced melody, the gamakaladen embellishments fell around the melody like sparklers during Diwali. Shankar, born into a renowned family of musicians, is the son and disciple of V. Lakshminarayana and L. Seethaklakshmi. He began to study the violin at the age of five.

I am eagerly awaiting his upcoming live concert for the Rhythm Foundation at Miami Beach, FL on April 16, 2022.

About the Author

In the early part of his career, he was an accompanist to Carnatic vocal stalwarts and a member of a violin trio with his brothers L. Vaidyanathan and L. Subramaniam. He also performed extensively with the great mridangam player Palghat Mani Iyer. In India, he received numerous awards for his outstanding musicianship, including the Best Violinist Award from the Madras Music Academy. He came to the US in 1969, where his work as a soloist and collaborator with such artists as Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin, and Vikku Vinayakaram placed him in the forefront of the expansion of Indian music into the realm of acoustic fusion music combining Indian music with elements of jazz. In the 1970s, with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain, he co-founded the legendary Indo-jazz group Shakti. Shakti with John McLaughlin, the first album by Shakti, was a brilliant amalgamation of traditional Indian classical music and modern European jazz. This album and others captured the hearts of music

58

connoisseurs all over the world. Not only did the music of Shakti inspire me to explore my own collaborations with progressive jazz, pop, and other musical genres from different parts of the world, but it also paved the way for “world music” to develop into an important creative musical genre that coincided with the globalization trends that accelerated in the latter part of the 20th century. In addition to expanding the frontiers of world music, Shankar has continued to expose the international audience to Indian classical music, often combining Carnatic and Hindustani (North Indian classical genre) styles.

S a n j a y Chandran, a resident of Boca Raton, FL, is an accomplished violinist of Indian classical (Carnatic and Hindustani) and world music genres. He has played solo concerts and performed with renowned Indian instrumentalists such as Chitraveena Ravi Kiran and Ronu Majumdar, and he has received many awards/honors, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for “The Most Promising Young Violinist” from the Government of India. He has performed and continues to perform original acoustic jazz fusion music with highly acclaimed jazz artists such as Bill Barns, Andrew Moorehead, Bruce Voris, and Daryll Dobson, to name a few. He founded Global Rhythms, a nine-instrument band that performs a blend of Indian Classical music with contemporary jazz, Celtic, Middle Eastern, and African music and co-founded the band Third Alignment with Daryll Dobson on the guitar and Sudhir Limaye on the tabla.

Nafisa to Tell the Truth Beena Shah, Munni Singh, and Khushboo Singh are the producers of this film. This incident had certain political connections; and hence, a CBI enquiry took place. Medical tests confirmed that 29 out of 36 minors were raped. CBI arrested 21 people, including politician Brajesh Thakur. One was acquitted due to a dearth of evidence. Brajesh Thakur, the main person to be accused, got life imprisonment. Common people are eagerly waiting for the movie to release—so they can know the truth about what occurred.

K

umar Neeraj, producer a n d d i rect o r, f a m o u s fo r making films based on reallife incidents, is beg inning the s ho o ti n g of h i s u pcom ing f ilm ‘Nafisa’. Famous for telling the truth, Kumar Neeraj made headlines in the Bhojpuri movie world for speaking out against obscenity. His film Gangs of Bihar is based on the strong men or ‘Bahubalis’ of Bihar. Nafisa is based on the horrific incident of the sexual exploitation of minor girls (for days) held together in a shelter-home run by the Government in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. The incident was first noted by the social audit of Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) Mumbai in 2018, where it was found that 36 minor girls underwent this trauma of sexual exploitation. The incident made the

62

entire nation horrified and remains a black spot for Bihar. Kumar Neeraj wishes to unearth the real story and the shock experienced by the minor girls. He will shoot the film at the shelter home in Muzaffarpur and Mumbai. Filming had initially been scheduled to begin earlier, but the pandemic and some personal-related inconveniences of the director had delayed the work.

Talking about Nafisa Movie, Director Kumar Neeraj said that this film will bring alive the story of that stigma on the forehead of Bihar and will also tell the real truth. The producers of this film are Beena Shah, Munni Singh and Khushboo Singh.

Viewers are in Total Awe over Jalsa

T

he trailer had already generated interest. In tune with that interest, the film ‘Jalsa’ received high acclaim from the viewers soon after its release on March 18, 2022, in Amazon Prime Video. A stellar performance by two powerful actors (Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah), a gripping storyline, and tension till the last minute made the viewers overwhelmed. The film (based on a hit-and-run-accident of a teenager that connected two women of different socioeconomic backgrounds) is a must watch, according to the viewers. Jalsa is produced by T-Series, Abundantia Entertainment, and Suresh Triveni and is directed by Suresh Triveni. Other members of the cast include Rohini Hattangadi, Manav Kaul, Surya Kasibhatla, Vidhatri Bandi, Kashish Rizwan, Shafeen Patel, and others who also played their roles appropriately and sincerely. Viewers are in total awe of the performances of the two female lead players, Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah. Vidya, playing a journalist, portrayed her complex role with her usual grace and competence. Viewers found her in total control of the character she played, and found her to be a perfect fit for the role of ‘Maya Menon’. Shefali Shah, a powerhouse of talent, mesmerized the viewers with her acting prowess and the emotions, anguish, and power she silently put through her expressive eyes. Special effects have also been an important part of the film (as mentioned by several viewers). The social media handles have been flooded with compliments for the film and its actors as well as its creators. Director Suresh Triveni and Prajwal Chandrashekar wrote the story and screenplay. Bachchan Pandey, the Hindi Remake of Several Southern Blockbusters, Releases on March 18, 2022

B

achchan Pandey, starring Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon and Jacqueline Fernandez, will be released on March 18, 2022. The action-comedy is the latest remake of the Tamil action-comedy Jigarthanda, which was released in 2014. It was directed by Karthik Subbaraj and received a very positive response from the viewers. However, Bachchan Pandey is not the first remake of this popular Tamil movie. In 2017, it was remade in Telugu as Katamarayudu, where Pawan Kalyan and Shruti Hassan played the lead roles. Then again, the film was made in Kannada as Odeya, where Darshan played the lead role.

After conquering the South Indian movie world, it’s now time for the Hindi remake Bachchan Pandey to conquer Bollywood. Bachchan Pandey is directed by Farhad Samji, and the producer of the movie is Sajid Nadiawala. Apart from Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon, and Jacqueline Fernandez as lead actors, the movie also has powerful performers like Pankaj Tripathi, Arshad Warsi, and Prateik Babbar as supporting actors. The promotion of Bachchan Pandey has received a very good response. Likewise, the trailer—as well as the poster, which has a rugged-looking Akshay Kumar on a bike with the glamorous Kriti Sanon behind him taking aim with a gun—has generated great interest among the viewers who are expecting an action movie with a difference. The movie is slated for release on March 18, which is also the festival weekend. With Holi being celebrated throughout the country, trade analysts are expecting a good return from the film. The star cast, action, drama and festive mood will gather moviegoers together to come to the cinemas to watch this movie.

The Kashmir Files is the New Blockbuster

an outstanding achievement for the film’s creators, director, and actors, but it is also an exceptional landmark for the Indian film industry, whose depictions of real-life incidents have received much acclaim. The success of the film has resulted in its being shown on an increased number of screens, the number of which increased to 2000 screens in the second week (up from only 630 screens at the time of release).

T

here was no publicity hype surrounding the film, and no dashing promotionals were released. Yet The Kashmir Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, is a blockbuster—and the film has grossed close to 1000 million. Apart from the general viewership, the film has been highly acclaimed by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who reiterated the necessity of Freedom of Expression regarding this fact-based film. Released on March 11, 2022, this film has become a blockbuster within the first week. Many state governments have made the film tax free and have even granted a half-day holiday for government employees who wish to go watch the movie. The cast of the movie includes Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumaar, Pallavi Joshi, Puneet Issar, Mrinal Kulkarni, Bhasha Sumbli, and others. The story depicts a person’s accounts of the deaths of his parents when he visits Kashmir upon the death of his grandfather.

66

The story, its authenticity, and the appeal of the plight of the Kashmiri Pandits have created a huge uproar among the viewers. Good reviews and word-of-mouth publicity has generated very good business for the film, proving once again that the content is king. The film gradually geared up at the box office. Following an opening day collection of approximately 35.5 million INR, its earnings came close to 1000 million INR marks by the end of the week. According to film trade analysts, it is a blockbuster among mid-range films. No such film has ever been so successful. Not only is this

Finally, Sangram Singh and Payal Rohatgi are Getting Married! They have been dating for 12 long years. Finally, after she expressed her anguish about not being able to get married to her beau, he announced their marriage date on social media. Indian wrestler Sangram Singh took to his social media handle and announced that he is going to marry his girlfriend Payal Rohatgi on July 22, 2022. Payal had broken down in tears on the reality show Lock Upp, where she is a contestant, and expressed her distress to her co-contestants about their relationship and how people around them are biased about her and have been influencing Sangram not to marry her. She further said that she wants to get married to Sangram. After the telecast of this episode, Sangram immediately responded through social media and declared the marriage date. He called Payal a nice girl and further said that they are equal in their relationship like any other couple. They had initially planned to get married in March, but could not due to Payal’s professional commitment to join the reality show Lock Upp. So, they will get married on July 22, which is close to his birthday. Sangram said that he is planning to return to professional wrestling this year and will play matches in Dubai. Payal and Sangram met each other in the show Survivor India and began dating since then. However, Payal once said that they (literally) met ‘on

the road’ while she was travelling from Delhi to Agra. Her car broke

down—and Sangram gallantly came to her rescue to help her.

70

Mapuskar. It is an official adaptation of BBC One’s series Luther. Viewers have liked the series ever since its release on March 4, 2022. All six episodes were released on that date, and the positive reviews started coming in from Day 1. The thrills of the series, the character of Rudra and his colleagues and his wife (played by Esha Deol), and the intelligent mystery-solving methods of Rudra all were received with high acclaim. Many of the viewers are eager to see the next season soon, as expressed in their social media handles. The recordsmashing viewership record has been referred to by the term ‘tod fod’ (smashing) by Ajay Devgan in his social media handle. Incidentally, ‘tod fod’ is also the name of the last episode.

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Winner Expresses Her Gratitude She is courteous and thankful like the true champion that she is. That is why she wrote a wonderful note of thanks to all those who contributed to her musical journey. Neelanjana Ray, the champion of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa: Music Ka Tyohaar, the popular music reality show, took to her social media handle and expressed a wonderful note of thanks. She thanked her parents and her guru, together with her audience, critics, ZeeTV channel judges, and fellow team members of the show, sharing her gratitude for their contributions to her grand success. She said that it would not have been possible for her without all their support and blessings. Neelanjana tagged her family members in this post. She said that winning the Champion trophy was

a great moment for her. It is a great blessing as well as a great responsibility for her; and she sought everyone’s blessings in her musical journey in the years to come. Esha Kansara and Siddharth Amit Bhavsar’s Engagement

Noted Gujarati cinema and TV actor Esha Kansara got engaged to her boyfriend Siddharth Amit Bhavsar, announcing it to be a lifetime collaboration between the two of them. Both of them were overjoyed and emotional at the gorgeous and glittering ceremony; and (so romantically!) both knelt to exchange rings. Esha said the two of them were enthu-cutlet, meaning ‘over-excited’. This was why they chose to hold an engagement ceremony as gorgeous as a marriage. The venue was beautifully decorated; and the family and friends of the duo showered them with flowers and blessings. Both being great admirers of Indian culture and tradition, both were dressed beautifully in Indian attire. Esha looked beautiful in a shimmering silver lehenga, and Siddharth looked dashing in a white sherwani. Both of them shared pictures

72

of their engagement, on their social media handles. The pictures depicted the intense feelings of the couple for each other. A video was posted with the hit song ‘Mast Magan’ in the background rendered by the groom himself. Pictures of both families were also posted. Esha confessed that she fell in love with Siddharth’s family before she fell for him. However, they have announced no marriage date as of yet.

Anupama Actor Rupali Ganguly Takes Pride in Her Status She is the current reigning queen of Indian TV and has been staying on the top of the TRP list for weeks. She is Rupali Ganguly, the lead actress of Anupama, the famous show of Star Plus. The people of India are watching her performance every day and are bestowing their love and affection on her. With such huge acceptance, won’t she prefer to venture large and enter the film industry in the days to come? Rupali is very happy and content with her career as a TV star and feels very proud of this fame and status. She does not like for the TV industry to be placed in a secondary status after the film industry. According to her, television has so many fine actors, but they do not get their dues. She mentioned the names of several eminent actors (including R. Madhavan) who began

their acting career from the so-called ‘small screen’. Despite producing so many excellent performers, the TV industry should not be given a hierarchically secondary status after the film industry, thinks Rupali. She shared her experience where she got more response and fan-following than a film star would at a particular event. They were in total admiration of her character ‘Anupama’, and Rupali was flabbergasted to see the response. However, she also mentioned that—unlike film stars, who are famous by their real name—TV stars are less famous than the name of the character they portray. She demanded more credit for the TV actors at the national level because they worked hard even during the COVID-19 pandemic for the sake of entertainment.

Esha has featured in TV shows like Ek Nanad Ki Khushiyon Ki Chaabi…Meri Bhabhi, Mukti Bandhan, Zindagi Mere Ghar Aana, and My Name Ijj Lakhan. Her film career began in 2017 with Duniyadari, and she has also acted in the films Mijaaj and Midnights with Menka. Siddharth has composed songs like ‘Insaaf’ and ‘Ishq Tanha’. He has also composed the music for films Jai Mummy Di and Motichoor Chaknachoor along with Gujarati films.
