Edito r’s V iew Dear Readers, The August issue is a Fashion Issue, and if there is one thing I do not know about, it’s fashion. So if I do not know what to write in this column, and my thoughts go all over the place then forgive me. First, let me welcome our newest writer, Siddhi Desai, a multi-talented energetic young lady who has an interest in Fashion and Spirituality - and yes both are opposites! In her article, “Fashion for the Soul,” she explains how to fuse Indian design and fashion with western ideas. She posed herself to show examples of her style along with the help of her her talented husband Adarsh, who was the photographer. Now let me turn to the FEMINA beauty competition. Rather than discuss how beautiful the contestants looked in their various outfits, let me discuss the brains behind their beauty. In a final round, judges ask all five finalist one question, “Who is the better teacher? Failure or success?” and the winner Anukreethy Vas told the audience that she had too many failures and that is the reason she has achieved what she has to date. Madsen, P. M., & Desai, V. M. in their book “Failing to learn?” discovered that the knowledge gained from our failures lasts longer than those from our successes. We all know successful Walt Disney and his empire. But not too many people know that at age 22, he was fired from a Missouri newspaper for “not being creative enough.” One of his early ventures, called Laugh-o-gram Studios, went bankrupt. So failure teaches you in ways success can’t. It shapes you as a person and makes you resilient. If we can learn from our failures, we can make success that much closer. And speaking of success, on August 15, 2018, we celebrate India’s 72nd Independence Day. I know I could not have fit what I want to say about India’s success in this column, so I decided to write a complete article, “ My India, My Love.” Of course you will see my bias toward India, but I think of it as my love. After receiving so many positive comments on the poetry written by Keshav, Aarohi and Faren in our last issue, we have decided to make poetry a regular column. ashion is about assembling a wardrobe that tells your story. Stories that reflect your journey, culture, heritage, and travels. Travel is an integral part of fashion as it allows you to incorporate your experiences with other cultures to create your own eclectic style. There’s an immense amount of beauty emanating from the diversity of the world that I fearlessly incorporate into my own style by mixing and matching pieces from different designers and artists from around the world and various time periods. And today the world is flat --- we are all one humanity and fashion has become a celebration and visual representation for the acceptance of multicultural art and love for one another.

There are no rules for fashion as long as your look embodies your true inner self. Some people try to keep up with what’s “in” for the latest season, but for me fashion is timeless, and I collect timeless pieces across seasons that I would love to wear even many years from now. Whether a collection is from this season or last or even several years old, fashion is art. And art is divine and immortal because it reflects the soul of all of our cultures collectively. 16

In order to preserve the soul of our ancient Indian artistic craftsmanship, we must support our struggling handloom sector. The handlooms of India capture our rich and diverse cultural heritage through the masterful artistry of our incredible weavers. Unfortunately, the art of handweaving is being lost as the livelihood of these artisans is not being appreciated enough for them to sustain a living. Let’s support our artisans in order to preserve our rich traditional art form and a piece of our cultural heritage. Preserving our own culture, heritage, and art is essential to keeping the beauty of diversity in the world intact.

Colombian designer Silvia Tcherassi received one of France’s highest arts distinctions, becoming Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, an honor awarded to leaders of the international arts community for their “contribution and commitment to cultural service.” She recognizes the strength of the people of her native country and helps them to achieve their potential. Finally, the Colombian label eywacorazónhonors ‘EYWA,’ which means the great mother who wants a better world for her children. Eywacorazón was created to provide a means to underprivileged mothers going through difficult times but that have warrior souls to fight to create a better future for their kids.

Nepalese-American fashion designer Prabal Gurung chooses to manufacture over 80% of his collection in his hometown of New York in order to support the local community and is committed to sustaining domestic employment and incomes. At the same time, Gurung performs extensive humanitarian work in his native Nepal supporting efforts to end women trafficking, educating underprivileged children, and helping those affected by the April 2015 Nepal earthquake.

Participants from every state of India compete for the chance to win the beauty challenge along with displaying their smart personalities and strong womanhood. This year, the crown of Miss India was given to the gracious Anukreethy Vas of Tamil Nadu. Anukreethy was born and raised in Trichy, a district in Tamil Nadu. She lost her father at a very early age and was raised by a single mother. She attended R. S. Krishnan Higher Secondary School and is now pursuing her B.A. degree in French at Loyola College, Chennai. During the competition, she was also crowned Miss Beautiful Smile and won the Beauty with a Purpose award. Anukreethy will represent India at the Miss World 2018 pageant to be held in Sanya, China on December 8, 2018. Runners up included Meenakhshi Chaudhary from Haryana, Shreya Rao Kamavarapu from Andhra

As we celebrate India’s Independence Day on August 15, we celebrate by publishing one of his most popular poems, “My India My Pride” as well as article “Visions of India.” gots of ignorance blaze with the wisdom of God. Visions of India India is the epitome of the world in everything. It is a land of all kinds of climates, religions, commerce, arts, peoples, scenery, stages of civilization, languages. Her civilization dates back many thousands of years.

The Secret of India’s Vitality The real life and secret of India’s vitality is her spiritual culture, which has made her the motherland of religions since time immemorial. India has been the grand inspirer of human minds and souls, the spiritual model of all religions. Her greatest and richest legacy to the world has been the scientific techniques for the spiritual advancement of man, discovered and handed down for centuries by her saints and seers.

A Land of Never-to-be-Forgotten Mystery India is a land of mystery, but a mystery that reveals itself to the sympathetic inquirer and seeker. In India there are the ancient caves of meditation where yogis and swamis saw the fag52

India has the grandest and highest mountains in the world — the Himalayas. Darjeeling, in the north, is the Switzerland of India. In India there is the Taj Mahal at Agra, the finest dream of architecture ever materialized in marble to symbolize the ideal of human love, and in Delhi, the unique ruins of ancient castles and vast palaces of princes. There is the blueness of the skies; the bright sunshine; the innumerable varieties of fruits and vegetables; the many types of people; the dark forests and jungles where tigers roam. All these make India different, fascinating, romantic, never-to-be forgotten.

Contrast, Surprise, and Adventure India is a land of great contrasts — untold riches and utmost poverty; the highest mental purity and coarse, plain living; Rolls Royces and bullockcarts. In the north, we find blue-eyed and blondhaired Hindus, and in the hotter south, the dark, sun-kissed skins of the tropics. From start to finish, India is a land of surprises, of contrasts and extremes. Life becomes prosaic with too much business, too many dull certainties. In India one feels that life is a great adventure, a thing of mystery and surprise. India may not have skyscrapers and all the comforts of modern life. She has her faults, as do all nations. But India shelters many unassuming, Christlike spiritual “skyscrapers” who could teach their Western brothers and sisters how to get the fullest spiritual joy out of any condition of life. Not where the musk of happiness blows, Not where darkness and fears never tread; Not in the homes of perpetual smiles, Nor in the heaven of a land of prosperity Would I be born If I must put on mortal garb once more.
