Nisha & Andrew Photographer: Sona Photography

It was not love at first sight for Nisha and Andrew, but Cupid had other plans for them! Nisha Patel, 29, an optometrist, was watching her favorite college football team at a bar when she met Andrew Guralnick, 33, a firefighter. Their chance meeting on Halloween developed into friendship, and that night their destinies changed forever. Their friendship developed over the next year. The duo slowly fell in love, and soon realized they couldn’t live without one another. Andrew’s support and care for Nisha eased her stress as she worked towards graduating from optometry school. Andrew bought a ring and asked Nisha’s parents for blessings. He knew how important her family was to her, so he invited Nisha’s sister, brother-in-law, brother and friends to Boston over Memorial Day weekend in 2016. They were walking through Boston Commons and came upon a trellis decorated by Nisha’s friends Debi and Ricky, who were hiding with a camera. Her best friend Gopi also surprised her with a visit.

Nisha and Andrew had a Hindu wedding followed by a Jewish ceremony and reception. “Andrew stopped, pulled me aside and gave his proposal speech,” said Nisha. He got down on one knee and proposed. They celebrated with family and friends at The Independent, their first date venue. Nisha and Andrew had a Hindu wedding followed by a Jewish ceremony and reception. The mehndi and grah shanti were held at her parent’s home in Tampa, Florida. The couple didn’t hire a wedding planner, but sought help from professional vendors. The

wedding ceremonies and reception were organized at the Rusty Pelican in Tampa. Nisha and Andrew chose the tropical hideaway as it stands on the waters of Tampa Bay providing an intimate setting. It was a destination wedding for the couple’s 128 guests. The theme for the Hindu wedding was traditional red, gold and white with a hint of royal blue. The Grand Ballroom with its views of the bay, built-in dance floor, chandeliers, and flowers in tall vases was perfect for the wedding.

Nisha’s Prince Charming arrived on a white horse for the baraat, and for the Jewish ceremony, the bridal party came in a black limo. The Jewish ceremony was hosted on the lush green lawn overlooking the ocean with lavender, purple, white and gold. Nisha and Andrew took their vows under the traditional Jewish huppah, while the setting sun lit their faces. The reception was an elegant affair in purple, lavender, gold with white tulle drapes and lights hanging from the ceiling. 21

Nikita Patel, 27, a pharmacist and Mayur Patel, 28, a graphic designer, took their vows in Birmingham, Alabama, on August 26. The duo met through a mutual friend. Mayur was once chatting with his friend on Facebook when he was then asked some awkward questions. He later came to find out it was Niki using his friend’s messenger. He found it hilarious, and sent Niki a friend request. They began talking, and planned a first date at the Georgia Aquarium that actually never happened! To come full circle, Mayur wanted the proposal to be romantic for Niki. He asked her to go to the Georgia Aquarium, where he had arranged everything. She was taken on a private tour and at the end she was asked to open a seashell that had ‘will you marry me’ written inside. Niki thought it was for someone else, but once she saw Mayur, she understood that it was for her. The couple celebrated by finally taking a tour of the Aquarium together! The couple hired Nilima from Crimson Bleu Events to help with wedding planning. Niki recommends a wedding planner as it is deDECEMBER 2017 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Niki wanted to have her wedding in Birmingham where she grew up. “I wanted an indoor wedding, as the weather is unpredictable in Alabama,” she said. Embassy Suites by Hilton was the venue and accommodated 600 guests. Niki and Mayur had a traditional Indian wedding complete with a mehendi, vidhi, garba, and more. Their close friends and family helped them with decorations, brought from India, all DIY! Niki’s maternal Uncle took 30

care of decorations, while the catering was taken care of by friends. All the ceremonies were planned meticulously, months ahead. The Bollywood-themed mehndi included games and a live food counter. The vidhi was done in according to Swaminarayan rituals. The mandap decoration for the indoor afternoon wedding was done by Mandap World, while the floral garlands were customized by Suman Patel, a local vendor. The bride’s side welcomed the baraat with a garba the day be-

fore the wedding. Gujarati and Rajasthani cultures were the theme, while the Indian band, Jashn belted Bollywood fusion and traditional music. The couple didn’t have a reception, so the welcome ceremony included performances from family and friends. Niki and Mayur also set up a photo booth for guests to have fun. The color theme for the wedding was gold, maroon, and lavender, while the wedding outfits were in traditional red and gold. The newlyweds left in a Bentley after the vidaai.

Niki’s advice to couples is to start planning early, stay calm, and get family and friends involved in planning and execution. She reminisces how Mayur ripped his dhoti before the wedding shoot, but luckily his groomsman pinned it up!

Doctors Katherine Bautista, 34, and Sameer Draviam, 34, tied the knot on November 4 in Orlando, Florida. The couple dated for two years, before getting engaged and getting hitched this fall. Katherine, an OBGYN Resident Physician met Sameer, an Emergency Medicine Physician (EMR) while working at the Osceola Regional Medical Center. Katherine is from Colorado Springs, while Sameer is from Cleveland, Ohio. From the very first instance when they met at the hospital, Katherine and Sameer connected. It was on Katherine’s birthday on the Big Island, Hawaii, that Sameer popped the question. The duo went on a week’s holiday after attending Sameer’s friend’s wedding in California. It was a surprise trip planned as Katherine loved adventure. They hiked volcanoes and enjoyed scuba diving. Katherine was not expecting a proposal, but rather was looking forward to a sunrise hike. However, when Sameer found a secluded waterfall while hiking, he went down on his knees and proposed. “I was very nervous and slipped on a wet rock, hurt my knee, but didn’t

Community Center. The décor was traditional Indian, while the mood was set by the DJ with foot-tapping numbers.

The couple hired a wedding planner - Casie Caldwell from Sparkleigh Productions. The couple also attended the My Shadi Bridal Expo in Orlando, where Katherine and Sameer had no doubts that the Hilton Orlando Resort would be the perfect venue for their wedding. Their guest list included 280 people.

The couple had a church wedding followed by a reception. The church wedding was held in the First Congregational Church of Winter Park, Florida. Decor at the church included flower arrangements on the altar and front, a white runner, tall candelabras with bright colored sashes tied on both sides. “We left the ceremony in a horse drawn carriage with ‘Just Married’ written across,” said Katherine.

The sangeet or mehndi was organized at the Winter Park 38

The baarat arrived after the Christian wedding ceremony dancing to Bollywood, Bhangra, and desi numbers as a dhol player played on. Sameer sat on a white horse that was visibly restless, while the bridal party arrived in a black Hummer limo. Three cabana tents were erected at the Hilton; one was transformed into a hookah lounge with live flamenco and a guitarist. The outdoors, sunset with candelabras, crystal chandeliers, and flowers were perfect for the cocktail and reception. Bollywood, Bhangra, Hip Hop, EDM, Reggae, Reggaeton, and dancehall music played.

When Ishan Patel, 29, product manager, and Niketa Agarwal, 27, a registered nurse, first met for coffee, they felt a connection immediately. Their first date night was nothing short of interesting with them sneaking into Piedmont Park after midnight to talk for hours. It was a moonlit night and the pair danced to Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years.” Ishan’s proposal was unique. One day while reading a local newspaper Niketa found her and Ishan’s photograph with the caption: “I’d like to order a lifetime supply of gulab jamun.” He got down on one knee with a ring and popped the question. After the surprise engagement, the couple started planning for their big day on September 2017. They didn’t hire a wedding planner, but did use a day-of coordinator. Family and friends played a huge role in assisting the couple with wedding event preparations. With Ishan and Niketa both living in Atlanta, they chose to keep their search in the city. DJ Play That Song: Choosing an Entertainment Vendor for Your Wedding

By Rina Shah, The Arpan Group

T

he best part of a wedding is debatable for many, be it time spent with family, eating great food, or scoping out the latest in wedding fashion. For some, there is no question - the dancing is the best part! In South Asian weddings, music, like food, plays a big role during the events. Whether to create a celebratory mood at the mendhi/sangeet or to strike a somber tone at the vidai, music helps to express

how the crowd feels at any given moment. The best DJs know how to read a crowd and play to their feelings. A crowded mob on dance floor at the reception? Thank your all-knowing DJ for that! Do your due diligence when choosing your DJ and/or entertainment service company. From providing music at the baraat, ceremony, and reception to monogram lighting, dance floors, and effects,

choosing an entertainment service company can be nearly as important a decision as selecting your venue. Even if you are not sure of how your wedding events will be structured, a reputable entertainment vendor can help you create the right ambiance with lighting and create a playlist that creates the perfect mood for each of your events. DJ Sumi Khan, of DJ Sumi Services, believes that “a great dj will know when to play a particular song by reading and interacting with the crowd. When it comes to being a DJ, the crowd defines your style, so I read them and then go with the flow. Selecting an entertainment vendor is much more than just music. Most modern South Asian weddings include family/friend and bride/groom performances as well as videos, slideshows, and unique couple entrances. With receptions now resembling minimusical productions, choosing an entertainment provider you are comfortable working closely with is key.

DECEMBER 2017 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Factors to Consider Selecting an entertainment provider for your wedding or events is much like choosing a venue or caterer. Price is certainly a factor, but so are the firm’s reputation, work ethics, and music selection. Firoz Dudha, owner/DJ of Dudha Productions also stresses the need for compatibility with his clients. “I will be the first to tell my clients that I may not be the best fit DJ for their event. It’s important for me to pass that client to a DJ who would be a better match.” Many entertainment vendors now offer a range of services from dance floors, lighting, live entertainers, and emcee services, so carefully consider your specific needs when narrowing your list. Budget: This is something to consider for all your vendors, and the entertainment provider is no different. Consider the number of events for

which you need a DJ and Emcee. Do you need special lighting for any events? A dance floor? Want special effects like monograms? Be sure to sure to consider all details when reaching out to potential vendors for a quote. Reputation: Experience is a key factor when selecting your DJ. There is nothing worse than an empty dance floor! Dudha explains that experience “should be the most important factor, not how long they have been DJing, but their experience with handling a crowd, and experience with the style of music required for each event.” Word of mouth referrals, references, and personally witnessing the DJ in action will give you a sense of their style and personality. Professionalism: Of all your vendors, the DJ is one that needs to be in tune with event schedules and timing of entrances and performances. Khan 64

and includes wedding favorites. If you have a preference on whether guests can make song requests, check with the DJ on how he/she will handle the requests.

Prepare for Your First Meeting As with all vendor meetings, be prepared to share your thoughts on what entertainment needs you have for your wedding events. On mehndi night, simply playing background music may suffice, while your reception needs may be more involved. Whether you have specific playlists or programming in mind or just a general idea of the type of music you like, be sure to ask questions and get ideas from your entertainment vendor. Khan advises couples to “ … make sure to have all details ready about your event to share. And never be afraid to ask questions.” Attention to detail goes beyond just the first meeting. Ask your entertainment vendor how they will communicate with you throughout the process. Will the DJ surprise you on your big day or will they reach out closer to your event to set a timeline and narrow selections? Dudha likes to reach out to clients one and half months before their event. “I help them with music selection, itinerary timeline, and understand their playlist. [This gives me time to] mash up a custom mix for the Bride and Groom’s reception entry.” Getting to know your entertainment vendor has advantages so they truly understand your style and needs for your events leaving you more time to enjoy your wedding day … and dance your feet off!

Favorite Wedding Moments The experts share the latest in music trends and what they’re listening to now (when they’re not catering to the requests of brides and grooms!). Dudha: There have been so many events with special mo-

ments, but it’s always amazing when you see the bride walk down the aisle. I realize that one day I will walk my own daughter down! Khan: My favorite weddings are mixed culture weddings … I must say nothing is more beautiful when two cultures mix. Ev

ery single moment of weddings are my favorite, but one in particular is when I get my bride and groom behind the booth and they DJ with me. Also, feeling a sense of togetherness from my crowd is the most uplifting feeling!

Six Months Glowing Skin Make appointments to see your dermatologist and discuss a personal cleansing and moisturizing routine. Two Months Keep Stress at Bay You need to relax and keep stress away though it is easier said than done! Stress can take a toll on your skin so practice some mindfulness techniques.

Deep Condition and Use Good Hair Spray Hair is an important part of your entire wedding look. 3 Secrets to Setting Good Boundaries in a Relationship (And Why They Matter)

Ever wondered what “boundaries” are in a relationship, and why they’re so important? Here’s the deal:

With good boundaries, intimate partners enjoy respect, honesty, and open communication. Each partner feels a healthy sense of independence and wholeness that is separate from their loved one. On the other hand, relationships with no or poor boundaries tend to have these qualities: jealousy, manipulation, dependency, miscommunication, feelings of incompleteness, and difficulties in letting go. In other words: being in an “unhealthy” relationship is often a sign that boundaries have not been respected nor established. So, good boundaries are essential. But how do you set them? Here are three key ways:

1

Express yourself, don’t assume.

It’s not possible to know everything your partner is thinking or feeling unless you ask. Likewise, it’s not fair to expect your partner to know what you think or feel unless you tell them. So: • Be honest when communicating your needs. • Create a safe and respectful environment to share these needs. • Practice “active listening,” which includes making eye contact, remaining quiet, and paying attention. • Ask clarifying questions. 100

2

Follow through.

A boundary can be small, like “I want you to stay out of the bathroom when I’m showering” or “I don’t want you to use my laptop without asking.” Boundaries can also be large and somewhat more abstract, such as, “I don’t want to be told what to do or wear” or “I want my relationship to be monogamous.” No matter how small or large a boundary is, it should be honored by both partners. If you make exceptions for your own boundaries, this subconsciously tells your mate that you don’t take your needs seriously and that you’re willing to compromise them. Likewise, if you fail to honor your partner’s boundaries, this will make it difficult for him or her to feel safe, loved, and respected. Eventually, this overstepping can lead to resentment and contempt. This doesn’t mean boundaries can’t change. But they should be discussed in the same respectful way that they were originally conceived. DECEMBER 2017 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

3

Take responsibility for you (only you).

Even partners with healthy boundaries have conflict—but these partners also tend to take responsibility for their own happiness as well as their own frustration, anger, and other “negative” feelings. So, be willing to

reflect on your own actions (or inactions) to see how you contributed to an issue. You also need to realize that you are not responsible for your partner’s feelings or behaviors. If your partner is un-

The children gather together to participate in a Diwali pooja and are especially excited because this is one day when they perform the rituals rather than their parents!
