Edito r’s V iew Dear Readers, The month of January brings many new and exciting things. To start, it is the beginning of a new year, new hopes, new resolutions, and new goals. But the most exciting for me is when the Indian government recognizes individuals who have contributed for years to promote India, Indian culture, and Indian heritage. As an Indian living outside of India, the Pravasi Awards, which occur every two years, is one of the most important events for me. Closely follows the Padma awards, another highlight for me. This year, I am even more excited since our very own Floridian, and my good friend, Dr. Kiran Patel received a Pravasi Award. Everyone knows Dr. Patel for his generous help toward all humanitarian causes. So to write about him is a tough job, and even tougher, to do so in one 500-600 word article. Moreover, he and his wife, Dr. Pallavi Patel are so modest they do not want to publicize the many good things they do. The team at Desh-Videsh Media Group was so fortunate to be able to visit his hometown, Mota Fofalia, near Baroda, Gujarat, in India. We were also able to do a photoshoot at the hospital and high school, which was funded by him and his wife and named after his father, Chhotubhai Patel. It is a real honor to know such a family. When I describe him as a Brand Ambassador of India, it is an understatement. Some of us who know him are aware that he is much more than that. Once again, I am fortunate that he has agreed to do a detailed interview once he returns from India. I’m equally excited to read about Dr. Subhash Kak, who received a Padma Shri award this year. It is well deserved and a long overdue award. Another modest individual, it was my pleasure to to meet Dr. Kak and interview him a few years ago when he came to the South Florida Hindu Temple during Hindu Heritage month. And last but definitely not least, this issue includes an article on Dr. David Frawley. In this article, I claim he is more hindu than Hindus - I am sure I am going to upset some of my Hindu friends. But this is the risk a journalist takes to report facts. And believe me it is no exaggeration. After reading this article, I am sure you will agree. It is also our pleasure to include two of his recent books in our Must Read Books column. And speaking of Hindus, it is our pleasure to announce a new organization, Network of Hindu Professionals (NET HP). The group had their first meeting and have announced a second meeting hosted by our own Chana Tailor. To end, let me change topics to our MyShadi Bridal Expos. As you have no doubt seen in the magazine and on social media, we have three shows planned for you: Atlanta on March 10; Raleigh on March 31; and Orlando on April 28. We’re thrilled with all the engagement in the social media world and appreciate the good response for all these efforts. If you or any of your family members are getting married or you are in the mood to shop, be sure to follow Desh-Videsh on Facebook and Instagram and stay up-to-date with details. Be sure to also accept our invitation to attend the show on Facebook! We can’t wait for another round of great shows. See you there! Raj Shah Managing Editor

To commemorate his return, the former Prime Minister, late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, choose the same day to celebrate the first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) in 2003. These awards mark contributions of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India. These conventions also provide a forum to discuss key issues concerning the Indian diaspora as well as a networking space among the non-resident Indian community.

During the event, selected non-resident Indians of exceptional merit are honored with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to recognize their significant contributions to various fields in India and abroad. cardiologist, businessman, philanthropist, loving husband, caring father, and helpful friend, Dr. Kiran Patel (fondly known as Dr. K) is all this, and much more. One of the prestigious awardees of the 2019 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, Dr. Patel grew up in Zambia, studied in Britain, got his medical degree in India and began his journey as a cardiologist in the United States. 24
FEBRUARY 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Born to Indian parents in the era of racial segregation in Zambia, life was never easy for him. He had to travel almost 50 miles to go to school, as there were no schools for non-whites in his town. Dr. Patel met his wife Pallavi, also a medical doctor, when he was studying in India. After completing their medical education, the couple moved to the U.S. in 1976. A savvy entrepreneur from the start, Dr. Patel created a network of physicians with different specialities. He went from being a cardiologist to a businessman when he took over a small health insurance company and turned it into a billion-dollar company. In 1992, he bought the struggling health maintenance organization, WellCare, and by 2002 the company had a revenue over $1 billion with more than 450,000 members and over 1,200 employees. In an interview, Dr. Patel once said, “I’m a risk taker and a 90 miles per hour guy, always pressing the accelerator.” A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Patel is the Chairman and 26

mid the disorder of a government shutdown and an unstable stock market (things that we cannot control), let’s keep focus on things we can control. As people tend to have a mindset of a fresh start in the new year by working out, eating healthy, or following through a goal, it’s also good to do a maintenance check on your financial aspects.

Will and Estate Plan Check
Credit Check
Insurance Check-Up
Even though the health insurance mandate is gone for 2019, it’s important to have at least the basic coverage insurance. Health costs are always rising and you never know when you’ll need it in case you end up in the hospital. Check your car, house, and life insurance. Is it still valid for your needs? Do you have an umbrella policy? 32
Does your current policy cover hurricane and flood damage? What does the fine print say? It doesn’t hurt to shop around to see if you can get the best plan with the best cost for you.
Online shopping was at an alltime high this year, especially during the holidays. And with that thefts and hackings also increased. If you haven’t checked your credit report and score in the last 12 months, do so at a website like https://www.annualcreditreport.com. Does anything look odd on there? Is there a mistake you forgot about? Get things fixed as soon as possible because a good credit score is crucial.
I cannot stress enough on how important it is to have at least a Last Will and Testament (Will) in place and an Estate Plan if you have assets. This will help prevent you from going into Probate, which is a grueling and long drawn out process with the courts. These two documents help protect your beneficiaries and your assets. Also, it can help reduce taxes, time, money and additional stress after your death. Contact an estate lawyer to validate and customize your plan. A Will has nominal fees and an Estate Plan costs is determined on the complexities of your assets.

Financial Goal Check
Have you made strides towards your retirement fund? Take a look into different 401k or IRA options. Do you have a savings account in case of emergencies? Doing a small automatic monthly transfer into an account helps increase this value systematically. Do you know what programs and companies you are subscribed to or a monthly member of? Do you need/want all of them? These include multiple gym memberships, cable/ satellite, magazines, or monthly product boxes that arrive on your doorstep so it feels like Christmas throughout the year. :) Can you pay down a high interest debt? With so much uncertainty happening in the financial markets in the new year, it’s ideal to make sure we check our positions to be better prepared for our future.

Famous Quotes by Indian Freedom Fighters
R
epublic Day is celebrated in the remembrance of the day when the Indian Constitution became effective on January 26, 1950. This day is not just about marching parades or singing the National Anthem, but rather one to honor the patriotic sovereignty, integrity and secularist proud of India. Every Indian, no matter where he or she lives, should think about the future of India, at the same time we must not forget, how we got here, and how far we still have to go. On this Day, we are sharing some the best quotes about India. There are so many great personalities in past, who were passionate about India, and we are sharing such famous patriotic quotes with you. Let’s inspire ourselves once again by these quotes and the people who said them.
Bhagat Singh (September 28, 1907 - March 23, 1931) It is easy to kill individuals but you cannot kill the Ideas. Great empires crumbled, while the ideas survived. Life is Lived on its own… Other’s shoulders are used only at the time of funeral. Bombs and pistols do not make a revolution. The sword of revolution is sharpened on the whetting-stone of ideas. The Sanctity of law can be maintained only so long as it is the expression of the will of the people. It is easy to kill individuals but you cannot kill the ideas. Great empires crumbled, while the ideas survived.
Mahatma Gandhi (October 2, 1869 - January 30, 1948) Do or Die. First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Freedom is never dear at any price. It is the breath of life. What would a man not pay for living? 38
Ram Prasad Bismil (June 11, 1897 December 19, 1927) Even if I have to face death a thousand times for the sake my Motherland, i shall not be sorry. Oh Lord! Grant me a hundred births in India. But grant me this, too, that each time I may give up my life in the service of the Motherland. FEBRUARY 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Bal Gangadhar Tilak (July 23, 1856 - August 1, 1920)
Sarojini Naidu (February 13, 1879 – March 2, 1949)
Our Nation is like a tree of which the original trunk is Swarajya and the branches are Swadeshi and Boycott.
I am not ready to die because it requires infinitely higher courage to live.
Swaraj is my birth right and I shall I have it.
Chandra Shekhar Azad (July 23, 1906 February 27, 1927) We will face the bullets of the enemies. We are free and Will remain free. If yet your blood does not rage, then it is water that flows in your veins. For what is the flush of youth, if it is not of service to the motherland.
Subhas Chandra Bose (January 23, 1897 August 18, 1945) One individual may die; but the idea will, after his death, incarnate itself in a thousand lives. Give me Blood, I’ll give you Freedom.
Swami Vivekananda, born as Narendranath Datta, (January 12, 1863 – July 4, 1902) Let new India arise out of peasants’ cottage, grasping the plough, out of huts, cobbler and sweeper.

I say it is not your pride that you are a Madrasi, it is not your pride that you a Brahmin, it is
not your pride that you belong to South India, it is not your pride that you are a Hindu, that it is your pride that you are an Indian. A country’s greatness lies in its undying ideals of love and sacrifice that inspire the mothers of the race.

More Hindu than Hindus
By Raj Shah, Managing Editor, Desh-Videsh
T
his issue of Desh-Videsh is a special edition covering Indians living in America. I would like to take this opportunity to discuss an individual who was not born in India, nor was born as a Hindu, but he is more Indian than many Indians I know and even more Hindu than many Hindus I know. The person is none other than Padma Bhushan Dr. David Frawley, also known as Vamadeva Shashtri. 46
Dr. David Frawley was born in Wisconsin as a Christian. He c o m e s f r o m a C a t h o l i c background where his uncle worked for a Christian missionar y. W hen he was nine years old, he taught himself all the constellations in the sky. He really enjoyed meditating under the stars, which led eventually to an interest in astrology and Jyotish. He began to read works by Swami Yogananda and B.V. Raman. FEBRUARY 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Dr. David Frawley is a spirit u a l p r e a c h e r, a d v o c a t e o f y o g a , Ve d i c a s t r o l o g y a n d ayurveda and writer of many New age books. He is described as “a key apologist for the Hindutva movement” and his works have been described as “the marriage between farright-wing Hindutva ideology and western New Ageism”.
Dr.Frawley did not f ind answers to his questions about life, religion and spirituality in Christianity. Then he studied other philosophies such as East and West Europeans, Egyptian, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. He found the works of Aurobindo and Raman Maharshi ver y insig htful. He studied Hindu Dharma and its philosophy for almost 20 years before becoming Hindu in 1991 with a new name, Vamadeva Shashtri.
In 2008, Frawley married well-known author and teache r of t h e S h a k t a t ra d i t i o n , Shambhavi L. Chopra, author of the best-seller: Yogini: Unfolding the Goddess Within. Together they are doing excellent
work through American Institute of Vedic Studies, founded by David Frawley. Shambhavi brings a strong element of bhakti and sadhana to their work together. In 2014 Frawley received a Phd from Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana in Bangalore, India. In 2017 he received a second Phd from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University in Faizabad, India. In 2015, he was a rare recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan award, one of the highest civilian awards granted by the government of India.
In his book, How I Became A Hindu - My Discover y Of Vedic Dharma he writes, “It is not necessary to live in India to be a Hindu. In fact one must live in harmony with the land where one is located to be a true Hindu.” He goes further and talks about Hinduism, “Hinduism never seemed to be something foreign or alien to me or inappropriate to my circumstances living in the West. It is the very religion of nature and consciousness in the broadest sense, which makes it relevant to everyone.” FEBRUARY 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

The award is given to the individual for distinguished service of a higher order to the nation. In his books, The Myth of the Aryan Invasion of India and In Search of the Cradle of Civilization, Frawley criticizes the 19th century racial interpretations of Indian prehistory, such as the theory of a conflict between invading Aryans and Dravidians. He also has rejected the Aryan Invasion Theory and supported the Indigenous Aryans theory. Philip Goldberg, in his book American Veda, mentions David Frawley as among three important teachers of the Vedic tradition in the West today. In its “Meet the Innovators” section, the magazine Yoga Journal speaks of David Frawley as “one of the f irst Americans to bring Ayurvedic Medicine and Vedic Astrology to the West.”

Networking for Hindu Professionals: South Florida
N
etworking for Hindu Professionals South Florida (Net HP SFL) was founded this year by a group of passionate young Hindu Professionals, a few advisors and like-minded supporters, all of whom felt South Florida lacked the active presence of youth (ages 25-35) when it came to volunteerism, seva and support of Hindu based causes. The goal is to give members access to the plethora of Hindu causes, associations and organizations so they can build relationships and serve their community as a strong, vibrant, passionate group. The founders wish to foster a friendly, social environment that is welcoming to all newcomers in the Hindu community as well as create a network of advocates. This was apparent at our launch meet and greet event at The Palace Indian Cuisine restaurant on January 18, 2019. Invitees came from all backgrounds and pro-

fessions, but were able to easily mingle and connect with one another based on their Hindu heritage and desire to meet and serve others. Second Chance: A Sister’s Act of Love By Dr M. P. Ravindra Nathan
At the age of 47, at the peak of his health and profession, Dr. M. P. Ravindra Nathan, a.k.a. Ravi Nathan developed a serious, incurable kidney disease called IgA Nephropathy that would inexorably progress to kidney failure necessitating a kidney transplant. His initial bewilderment and shock gave way to severe anxiety not knowing what the future held for him. Fortunately, with the help of his family, notably his sister who donated one of her kidneys, and his wife who attended to him every step of the way, plus a group of good doctors, and friends, he survived the many crises and achieved some stability in life. His eventual recovery from a serious illness after going through a complicated course is a true testament to the miracle of modern medicine. Twenty three years have passed since his kidney transplant and his kidney is maintaining normal function and he continues to be active, loving every moment of life. In Second Chance, Dr. Nathan shares his unique perspective regarding the role of kidneys in your body: what happens when they fail, the options for treatment, and what is involved in getting a kidney transplant. Because of multiple complications, it took almost a year for complete recovery, but he never gave up hope. The main reason he wrote this book is to educate readers - both lay public and medical personnel - that a kidney transplant is the best treatment for kidney failure and, even if you encounter complications during or after surgery, with proper management you can recover and live to enjoy your life for many years. This book takes you through the intricate details of how kidney failure could happen to anybody, even to someone who is apparently in good health. Yes, even to a physician familiar with the inner workings of the body and preventive care. But “disease can happen to anyone--even doctors could become seriously ill, necessitating an organ transplant. Ultimately, Dr. Nathan recommends that we need to trust our own body--the beauty, resiliency and ability for its recovery, no matter how ravaged it is with disease processes. He hopes the readers will enjoy this book and find inspiration from his story. It was indeed a fascinating journey for him albeit a long one, that began sometime in 1989, and finally ended successfully in 1995. As of this writing Dr. Nathan continues to enjoy his life with a functioning transplanted kidney.

Arise Arjuna: Hinduism Resurgent in a New Century By David Frawley
India faces a modern Kurukshetra as the forces of dharma and adharma clash again in a conflict that will determine the future of the nation. On one side are the forces of economic growth, cultural revival and a renewed vision of the country in harmony with its yogic values. On the other side are forces of religious prejudices, baseless propaganda, social division and materialistic political ideologies. Mere retreat, passivity or compromise cannot overcome past adversaries or the new dangers that are lurking in our conflicted media age, its invasive technology and the disruptive clash of cultures. India needs to benefit from the opportunities of the dawning knowledge era where its dharmic traditions can prosper once again. A new spiritual warrior, equipped with yogic power and Vedantic insights, is necessary like Arjuna was under the guidance of Sri Krishna. This book is a call for new Arjunas to emerge among us, learn the skills of the information age and uphold the cause of dharma with discernment and dedication on both intellectual and spiritual levels. Only through this can we awaken our spirit to uplift our world at this critical juncture of human history when the very foundations of life are threatened.
What is Hinduism?: A Guide for the Global Mind By David Frawley
What Is Hinduism? provides one of the most provocative, engaging and detailed examinations of this oldest religious and spiritual tradition in the world. Followed by over a billion people, including a great majority in India, Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world. The teachings of Yoga and Vedanta are followed by millions in every continent. Enriched with a profound pluralistic view, Hinduism emphasizes that the Truth is One but has many paths. Yet, despite its universality, Hinduism remains the most misunderstood of the world’s major religions, partly because of its antiquity and the vast extent of its teachings. Acknowledging the importance of the religion and its growing influence globally, David Frawley has addressed the prime teachings of Hinduism, its role in India, its place in the information age and has compiled an exhaustive set of questions and answers dwelling on all the significant issues. This essential learning helps us understand our spiritual heritage as a species and the place of India among the greatest civilizations of the world- ancient and modern. Further, the book charts out how Hindus can overcome the challenges confronting them today and communicate their diverse tradition more effectively, making it an ideal book for Hindu youth. 56

Critics Give Uri: The Surgical Strike Mixed Reviews but Vicky Kaushal Remarkable Bollywood’s first release of the year, Uri: The Surgical Strike starring Vicky Kaushal, released on January 11. Helmed by debutant director Aditya Dhar, the film is a dramatized account of surgical strikes organized by the Indian Army following the 2016 Uri attack. Vicky plays Major Vihaan Singh Sherghil, who strategizes and leads a team across the border to get revenge for the country. A slick war film,Uri is laced with remarkable performances, especially by Vicky Kaushal, who brings intensity, strength and vulnerability to his role. While all critics have praised Vicky’s acting skills, some have panned the film for its flawed and unimpressive storyline. Though the film keeps away from jingoism that is attached to most Bollywood war films, it does include some dialogue such as “Unhe Kashmir chahiye aur humein unka sar.” Uri is also the year’s first film to enter the $15 million club. The film earned $5.3 million in its opening weekend and crossed the $15 million on its eighth day of release. Uri is Vicky Kaushal’s first solo film to enter the $15 Million club. With its thrilling and gripping patriotic theme, Uri has been a smash hit overseas as well. 58

Why Cheat India – Promising Story Let Down by Lackluster Script Emraan Hashmi plays an anti-hero in his first release of the year, Why Cheat India. Directed by Soumik Sen, the film focuses on malpractices that exist in the country’s education system. The film’s title was changed just a couple of days before its release from Cheat India to Why Cheat India, due to certain last-minute concerns and objections by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Emraan Hashmi plays Rakesh Singh who runs a business scamming wealthy candidates to get seats in engineering and medical colleges by getting smarter students to take their exams instead. He recruits poorer and brighter students in desperate need of money to write as a proxy in place of wealthier students who are unable to score or pass. Emraan Hashmi plays the role of a scheming anti-hero quite well. But the film on a whole leaves you unentertained. Why Cheat India could have been a smart film looking into the flawed educational system of the country, but a disjointed, stretched and lackluster script plagues it. Why Cheat India turned out to be one of the lowest box office openers for Emraan Hashmi, as it leaves audiences desiring for more.
The Accidental Prime Minister Based on the 2014 memoir of the same name by Sanjaya Baru, The Accidental Prime Minister is a biographical film about the life of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The film stars Anupam Kher as Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 under the UPA Government. The Accidental Prime Minister explores Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister, and his role in the cabinet, party and country. Akshaye Khanna plays Sanjaya Baru, Singh’s policy analyst and media advisor. The film revolves around Singh’s two-term tenure and how Sonia Gandhi, who was the thenPresident of Congress, controlled him. The Accidental Prime Minister doesn’t reveal much that is unknown to us, and seems like a propaganda film at best. Apart from Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna, the film also stars Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi, Aahana Kumra as Priyanka Gandhi, and Arjun Mathur as Rahul Gandhi. Anupam Kher embodies the character of Manmohan Singh quite well, though the dialogue makes it feel as a caricature at times. At the box office, The Accidental Prime Minister got a moderate opening. The film made about $600,000 on its opening day.

Total Dhamaal Trailer: The Story of a Crazy Journey The trailer of the third film in the Dhamaal franchise is out and it is quite a casting coup. Total Dhamaal, directed and co-produced by Indra Kumar, stars Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Javed Jaffrey, and Esha Gupta. The trailer begins with Manoj Pahwa’s character who reveals the location of Rs. 50 crore hidden somewhere, as he is about to die. This is enough to send all the characters out on a crazy treasure hunt in small teams. The trailer is filled with slapstick comedy, loud acting and over-the-top characters. And, is overloaded with CGI effects and CGI animals. Total Dhamaal sees Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, and Javed Jaffrey reprising their roles from the previous Dhamaal films. While almost all the actors from the previous franchise are a part of the film, Sanjay Dutt is missing from the mix. Indra Kumar explained, “Since it is a multi-starrer film, bringing so many big actors together is not easy at all. We both, Sanjay and I are unhappy about it, but we regret it.” Total Dhamaal also marks the comeback of 90s hit pair, Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor, after 26 long years.
Gully Boy Trailer: Ranveer Singh & Alia Bhatt’s Engaging Journey roles, the film is about following one’s passion and dreams, no matter how different or difficult. Gully Boy is the story of an underdog who works his way up from the slums to follow an otherwise “unconventional” dream of becoming a rapper. Ranveer plays Murad, a Dharavi resident with a less privileged life, who raps to express. Living under the shadow of a domineering father (Vijay Raaz) who is a driver and anything but supportive of his son’s ambitions. Murad’s dreams to become a rapper find a supporter in his girlfriend Safina (Alia Bhatt).
There haven’t been any true-blooded Bollywood films focusing on hip-hop and rap, and Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy promises to be quite a treat. With Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead 62
Gully Boy is inspired by real-life rappers Naved Shaikh aka Naezy and Vivian Fernandes aka Divine. Apart from Ranveer and Alia, it also stars Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi (Inside Edge), Amruta Subhash, and Vijay Verma. The film’s screenplay was co-written by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti. The film will release on February 14 and will have its world premiere at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival. FEBRUARY 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
