Indian American Actress Shoba Narayan Leads the Way to Broadway

B

roadway star Shoba Narayan grew up in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. In this suburb outside of Philadelphia, Narayan, one of five children, would perform nightly variety much to the chagrin of her siblings. Though her two brothers felt being subject to these shows was akin to “torture,” Narayan’s parents noticed her affinity for performance and enrolled her in music and dance classes spanning Western and Indian styles. From ballet, violin, and classical voice to Bharathanatyam and carnatic voice, Narayan explored a full spectrum of performing arts, including musical theater. At nine years old, Narayan performed in her first musical, The King and I, and from that point on, musical theater stole her heart. Realizing that music theater was a perfect blend of her passions, storytelling and performance, Narayan chose to pursue a career in the arts at the Boston Conservatory, where she majored in musical theater. After graduating, Narayan moved to New York City to begin her professional journey. In 2015, Narayan earned a role in the film Growing Up Smith, which followed an Indian immigrant family to the U.S. who adopts a new lifestyle and culture while still maintaining their Indian values. The story is similar to Shoba’s family as well as the millions of Indians who have emigrated from India. But getting roles in films or in stage performances has not been easy for Narayan. When she was in eighth grade, Narayan wanted to perform the lead role of Dorothy in Wizard of Oz, but was

told her brown skin made her a less than desirable candidate. Discouraged by the taunting of her classmates, it was Narayan’s mother who encouraged her to work hard for what she wanted. Narayan doubled down efforts to practice and did her best to audition as a convincing Dorothy. When the music teacher announced Narayan would perform as Dorothy, she was ecstatic, but also very confident about her talent. Having additionally garnered roles in onscreen projects such as Quantico, Growing Up Smith, and Gossip Girl, Narayan has more recently turned her attention to stage musicals. When Narayan stepped into the lead role of Natasha in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 in March 2017, Narayan became the only South Asian female in a leading role on Broadway since Bombay Dreams was on stage in 2004-2005. Currently, Narayan portrays Eliza Hamilton in the U.S. Tour of Hamilton, a Pulitzer award winning musical, at the Broward Center for Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale through January 20. She will perform in Orlando at the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts from January 22 - February 10. In learning she was selected for the role of Eliza, Narayan tweeted, “This is for the women, the immigrants, the minorities that wake up every morning and push to defy the odds, to dream big, and to not throw away their shot.” With roles for South Asian actors few and far between, Narayan is changing the face of Broadway and the performing arts. For many young Indian Americans, Narayan represents what is possible with determination and hard work.

The Desh-Videsh team thanks Shoba for taking time out of her busy schedule for the below interview as well as the photoshoot. Learn more about Shoba Narayan and her journey to becoming a Broadway actress. Tell us a little bit about your career and how you came to be where you are today. I had the opportunity to work on onscreen projects like Quantico, Growing Up Smith, Gossip Girl, Coin Heist, Mistress America and Halal in the Family. More recently, I’ve been working on stage musicals. In 2016, I made my Broadway debut in 12-time Tony nominated Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. I am currently performing as Eliza Hamilton in the U.S. Tour of Hamilton at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts through January 20, 2019. When did you know you wanted to be a Broadway star? How did you begin to reach for this goal? I knew I wanted to be on Broadway when I saw my first show in New York City as a child. I found myself completely taken by the caliber of the talent and production I saw on stage. I knew one day I wanted to be up on a stage and to make an audience feel what I felt during that show. Though I didn’t see anyone that looked remotely like me performing, I let myself dream.

lieves in herself and goes after what she wants unapologetically.

You appeared in the television show, Quantico, after which you tweeted, “Had an amazing time shooting the abc pilot for #Quantico with the radiant Priyanka Chopra.” How was this experience with a Bollywood star?

Describe your experience being “Eliza Hamilton” in the Broadway show, Hamilton. What type of energy and camaraderie do you feel with the cast?

Priyanka is an inspiration and a really wonderful person to work with. It was an interesting time to have met her because she was just entering into the Hollywood phase of her career. There was a lot riding on the success of Quantico. Based on the pilot episode, the show would either make it to series or go in the garbage. Because it was a high stakes situation, I think she felt the pressure and responsibility to make an impact with the first episode. Despite all of that, she handled herself with grace, confidence and leadership. That’s what inspires me most about Priyanka -- she be-

Working on Hamilton and playing Eliza in particular, has been an incredible experience for me in every sense. Portraying her has been a masterclass in resilience and forgiveness, and serving the greater good. From a technical standpoint, the role is vocally and emotionally demanding, so the way in which I take care of myself outside of the show is very specific. Eating a clean diet, sleeping, drinking tons of water, exercise, limiting the amount of talking, sleeping next to a humidifier, and doing a vocal warm up before the show are part of my everyday routine.

My cast is like a second family at this point. We have been travelling and performing together for a year now, and have the best time together, on stage and off. Something special about working in an acting company like Hamilton is the amount of diversity in race, faith, experience, and I think most notably - talent. On any given day, you can hear people backstage freestyle rapping and beatboxing. You can see cast members collaborating on a new piece of music or choreography. Some are writing plays and TV scripts. You can watch an understudy step into a lead role one day and see them inhabit a completely different character the next day with ease and mastery. Then there’s the work you see in the show itself. The best thing about being in the show is having a front row seat to some of truly spectacular performances by my colleagues. You are a renowned and classically trained Bharathanatyam dancer and teacher. How has that training helped on Broadway and in your career? My training in the Indian arts played a huge role in my development as an artist and a person. As a child, I was learning about two different artistic cultures in parallel. These two cultures despite many difference had many similar traits and shared influence when it came to the arts. For example, I found that the abhinaya (facial expression) training helped me with theater and ballet, and conversely my ballet training helped me with strength, alignment and agility in Bharathanatyam. The cross pollination of the two cultures deepened my understanding and appreciation for the two worlds I was exploring. My journey with the Indian arts as been special to me, particularly because it taught me a lot about discipline, storytelling, musicality and spirituality. It taught me to think of art as a prayer and vehicle to promote positive social change. How does being an Indian American impact your acting and career life? Have you faced any challenges? There are definitely some challenges. The acting path is hard as is with the amount of rejection one faces, but being a minority actor can add

more complexity, especially if you are gunning for lead roles. I think the first challenge to note it is that there is a lack of roles written specifically for Indian actors. Though we are getting better visibility on television, the majority of lead roles are still written and given to white actors. I think we are at a time where we are redefining what a typical American could look like, and what a leading man or leading lady could be. I hope to continue to play complex, three-dimensional women that break stereotypes for women of color. It’s an uphill battle, but an exciting one. Lots of glass ceilings to break! What drives you in your work and life? What really pushes you to succeed and reach greater heights? There are lots of things that drive me. A big one is representation. I think that as a kid, when you see what is possible for you, it makes it easier to visualize and go after a dream. Since I didn’t have an Indian female role model who was on Broadway and TV growing up, it didn’t feel like my dreams were within my reach. So a big motivator for me is to *try* be that role model for other minority kids growing up now. Second, I love working on projects that serve a greater purpose and tell a timely message, and gets important conversations going.

Increasingly today, younger generations in the South Asian community are choosing “non-traditional” careers. What words of wisdom do you have for those who aspire to pursue their interests and embrace an entrepreneurial or artistic spirit? Yes, and it’s so amazing and exc it i ng to see the cha nge h a p p e n i n g ! S o m e wo rd s of wisdom to anyone pursuing creative/nontraditional field: know there is no set path or formula to success, and that is okay! If you believe that you are good at what you do, are willing to push hard and get better at it everyday, you can have the most fulfilling ride of your life. Betting on yourself is a powerful thing. Also, be kind to others but also yourself. A lot of creative f ields are based on how you make people feel - that applies to an audience, your co-workers, and even yourself. You want to nurture these relationships and stay humble and happy. PHOTOGRAPHER Infinite Loop Photography www.infiniteloopphoto.com 305-814-8640 Make up and Hair Anju Thaker 954-554-8749

10 Ways to Naturally Detox your Body for the New Year

By: Saira Sultan, ND

The New Year means a time for a New You. If this means to achieve your weight loss goals or cleanse your body, then these detoxes will be a great way to jump start your 2019.

1. Drink Water: Water is part of every metabolic process in the body, and adequate water intake also helps keep the balance of body salts normal. I recommend drinking ½ of your body weight in ounces. The best way to tell if your water intake is adequate is to check the color of your urine. Pale yellow is the goal. If it's any darker than that, drink a glass of water or two. 2. Juicing Cleanse: Try a two-day juice cleanse to cleanse your kidney and liver. I recommend freshly juiced 1 part lemon, 2 parts grapefruit, 2 parts orange, and distilled water. Drink 1 gallon of this daily for 2 days along with 1 gallon of distilled water per day. You can purchase this already made at some juiceries for about $20 per gallon. Typically, patients will lose 5-7 pounds in those two days and will be able to keep this off if you continue with a healthy diet. 3. Exercise: Skin is the body’s largest organ, and sweating helps you eliminate excess body salts and other metabolites of body processes. Breaking a sweat every day is a good way to support your body’s healthy elimination of metabolic breakdown products. I recommend 30 minutes of exercise per day with a mix of Interval cardio and weights. 4. Sleep: Sleep is the time our body gets to repair, rebuild, and restore in every way. Create a bedtime ritual of seven hours on average of sleep per night. Avoid using your cell phone or computer for two hours before your bedtime.

Recent studies continue to support the connection between amount of sleep and cognitive function. 5. Limit Caffeine: Caffeine can be a boost for mental focus and energy, if limited to less than 300 milligrams per day. A large mug of coffee has about 150 milligrams of caffeine, so that’s about two servings a day. A mug of tea is around 50 milligrams, so that’s about six servings. When it comes to caffeine, the less often it is consumed, the more of a positive biological effect you can expect. 6. Stop Eating Sugar: Cut out sugary drinks, snacks, and treats, and you’ll be surprised

situation occurs, they will likely copy that action because it has already been associated as the correct response. Hence, when their parental figure accidentally slips and bangs their fudging toe, their child has just learned what a fudging toe is. Similarly, they learn to process stress through watching others around them. A person that takes the time out of their schedule to input relaxation and recover in a healthy manner can pass on these techniques to their child naturally. A person that keeps themselves in a constant state of anxiety and does not employ proper stress reduction techniques can pass on those behaviors as well. At the end of the day, whatever you do will rub off onto your children.

It is natural to worry about our children’s well being. However, are we paying the same level of attention to their mental health? What outlets are we providing for them to process stress in a healthy manner? Meditation can help a child develop: • Self-awareness • Focus and concentration • Strategies to deal with stress Meditation can help a child learn how to take time for themselves and tune out

beneficial. One of the definitions of self-regulation is, “the ability to monitor and control our own behavior, emotions, or thoughts, altering them in accordance with the demands of the situation” (www.education. com). Self-regulation skills include not giving into our first reaction such as anger or sadness. It helps keep us from getting distracted by our surroundings and also helps us to continue performing the task which we were originally involved in.

Children have stressful lives too. That may seem like an oxymoron, right? With such a small number of years on this planet, how could their experience of life be stressful already? Well, as their guardians, we are always trying to ensure a balanced life for them. In addition to school grades, we involve them in many extracurricular activities. We ensure they are eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and are not overly stimulated. Unfortunately, even a balanced life can create stressors. On top of that, add siblings, friends, and other family members, and one can easily see how stress can creep into even the youngest members of our family.

from their daily pressures in a healthy way. Did you know that schools around the country are now starting to offer meditation to replace the practice of detention? This gives the child an opportunity to reflect on their actions and move forward in a positive manner. This self-regulation of one’s mental state during a stressful situation is very

We all know that learning does not start at school; it starts at home. A child’s first teacher is their parent/ guardian - they learn by watching and listening to the people around them.

All around the world, including here in the United States, some schools have integrated yoga coupled with meditation and pranayama breathing techniques as an elective class. Some schools are offering the same as a part of the afterschool program curriculum. One school in Baltimore was recently recognized for offering their students a small room called the Mindful Moment Room to re-energize, re-balance, and ground themselves! The Dalai Lama said, “If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation. An environment that is conducive to meditation is an environment in which a child can thrive on creating a meaningful and sustainable practice.

The ability to employ these skills in the moment can become a learned reaction through practice. The best way to encourage a child to establish a practice is by being a role model. By watching meditation being consistently performed by their parents, children will respect the method and techniques. We have become ever-conscious about what we give our kids when it comes to foods and stimuli. But, bringing up a generation of mindful human beings that are in tune with themselves and teaching them to combat negative emotional responses is as important, if not even more so. By modeling meditation to our children, we are not only teaching our future generation to be more loving and compassionate to themselves, but we are also giving them the gift of mindfulness from our own practice.

Strategies to Reduce Your Taxes and Keep More of Your Savings By Umang Thakkar & Payal Agarwal

W

e are living in a reformed tax world now, since the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in 2017. For most of us, the effects of this act will not be felt until we file our 2018 Tax Return, due on April 15, 2019, or October 15, 2019 (if extended). Several new tax laws were introduced, and some were modified or removed from the existing tax code. It is very important to understand the effects of this tax law and how you can use it to your advantage to pay off in the months and years ahead. First, it is important to understand the three different tax structures. Every person should plan their taxes and finances around these for the most advantageous tax strategy and to keep more money to themselves rather than to pay off a hefty tax bill

Pre-Tax Structure This structure allows you to invest monies pre-tax or before tax basis, giving you the tax deduction in the year of contribution. Earnings, dividends and interest grow tax free until you withdraw funds at a future date. Upon withdrawal, the income is taxable at the tax rate of your retirement, while the contributions are tax deductible at the rate in the year of contribution. Most of employer sponsored retirement plans such as 401(k) and 403(b) and also Traditional IRA, SEP IRA and Simple IRA are usually pre-tax. Although each plan has different contribution limit and plan rules, the tax structure is the same. The advantage of pre-tax structure is to save taxes in the year of contribution and get taxed in retirement when tax rates are

usually lower. However, it is important to understand the various types of income you would receive in your retirement including social security and how this income would place you in a higher tax bracket in retirement, sometimes making your Social Security benefits taxable.

After-Tax Structure This tax structure allows your after tax monies to be invested to earn more income in the form of interest, dividends or capital gains. Usually these are investments in Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, ETFs, Money Market, CDs and Real Estate. Investment is considered as non-qualified and does not have any holding period such as pre-tax structure where you have to wait until you are 59 ½ years to withdraw your monies without any penal-

ties. Tax is assessed in the form of regular ordinary tax for interest or capital gain taxes for stocks, bonds and real estate. There is no deduction for making this investment; however taxes are assessed in the year when the gains are realized by selling of those investments. Generally investment is done in this structure for shorter or medium term. This is also a person’s emergency fund when needed in times of need as they cannot tap in to pre-tax investments due to 10% additional penalties. There are no penalties associated to sell After-Tax investment at any point of time. The only thing to look out for is if the investment will be assessed short-term (lesser than

* This tax structure is potentially tax free and may lose its tax favored status under certain circumstances. Please consult your Tax Consultant or Financial Professional on how to take advantage of the items under this structure. ** Cash Value generally grow tax free and can be accessed via Loans and withdrawals up to the basis. Please consult your Financial Professional to ensure they do not convert in to a Modified Endowment Contract (MEC). a year) or long-term (one year o more) capital gain taxes. Long Term Capital gain taxes are generally lower than the shortterm.

Tax-Free Structure This structure is probably the most underutilized and overlooked savings and investment option. Here you deposit after tax dollars and the assets grow income tax free and can possibly be withdrawn tax free as long as you follow rules associated with this asset class. This structure can provide dollar to dollar of the amount you may need. For example, if you need $50,000 every year on your withdrawal, then $50,000 from tax free structure translates to $50,000 of available monies, where as the Pre-tax bucket can possibly take out 20% of taxes or whatever your tax rate would be during retirement leaving you with only $40,000 (as 20% of $50,000 would go in paying taxes). Roth and Cash Value Life Insurance are some types of investment products that offer this benefit. Also 529 Plans do similar towards college education. To understand the benefit of this bucket, it is important to translate this in to real numbers. For example, if you are generate an 8% annual return, then a tax-free structure would double your monies in 9 years, where as if those investment returns are subject to 25% income tax than your monies will double in 12 years. This is the kind of impact taxes can have on your savings. Strategizing a tax efficient retirement is usu-

ally done by utilizing the correct mix from all three structures. Life Insurance can also be used as a Tax-Free Retirement Tool similar to Roth IRAs or Roth 401Ks. Remember that Roth and Loans from Cash Value Life Insurance Products are only two things that do not get included in your tax return when distributed upon Retirement and can be used as a Tax Free structure. Cash Value Life Insurance is a rich man’s Roth since the Roth has an Adjusted Gross Income limit of $203,000 in 2019, which means any married couple making over $203,000 and any Single Person making over $137,000 in 2019 cannot contribute to Roth, but they can consider investing in Cash Value Life Insurance Products.

Life Insurance as a Retirement Planning tool We always think that life insurance is for the financial benefit for our relatives when we

die, but we do not realize that we can often use it to our advantage sooner. We can structure our life insurance so that we can use it as an additional stream of income, especially during our retirement. Here is how a permanent insurance product can be used as an additional income source. Cash Value with Whole Life Whole life insurance covers you for a lifetime. They are generally more expensive than term life (which has a fixed duration of 10, 15, 20 or 30 years). In the whole life insurance policy you accumulate cash value, which also earns interest or dividends on tax deferred basis. You can borrow against the policy up to the amount of cash value you have accrued without paying taxes. If you receive dividends you will not owe any taxes on them unless you exceed the total amount of premiums you have paid. Based on how much you can borrow, you can use

a whole life policy as a steady source of income in retirement. You do not have to repay loans against cash value. Outstanding loan balance reduces any death benefit payable to your beneficiaries when you die. Universal Life an Investing Tool Universal Life Insurance is another type of permanent coverage; however, it works little differently than whole life. You can still earn cash value based on the amount of interest earned as you pay your premiums. One key difference is that Universal Life gives you the flexibility of premium in which the premium amount can be adjusted based on your financial situation. You also can change your death benefit amount as needed. You can also use the accrued earnings in Universal Life to cover your premiums making this an attractive product for retirees. In addition to building cash value, there is also an investment component. A portion of your monthly contributions goes towards paying your premium costs and the remaining amount is invested in the investment vehicle of your choice. The investment performance determines your individual returns. You can borrow against the cash value tax-free. One has to be aware that the returns in universal life are not guaranteed. Work with your financial professional to select the best investment strategy for you. 42

Can I convert Permanent Policy to an Annuity to create a Lifetime Income stream? If you have built up amount of cash value in a permanent policy then you may be able to convert that to an annuity, creating a regular source of income. An annuity is a product that you can purchase from a life insurance company. You typically fund an annuity with a lump sum and the insurer pays you a fixed amount for the duration of its lifetime. A lifetime annuity allows you to receive payments until you die. If you cash out a permanent life policy, you would have to pay tax on the earnings, however a 1035 exchange allows you to switch to an annuity tax-free. In an annuity you may not have a death benefit component similar as a life insurance product. If you have other assets for your heirs than you may want to consider this switch to pay for your retirement years.

Bottom Line Developing a retirement strategy begins with knowing what your savings and investment options are. If you have not thought about Roth and Cash Value Life Insurance as tools to grow your assets tax free then you may be overlooking a potentially valuable source of income and savings. Tax Scams & Schemes The “dirty dozen” favored by criminals & cheats.

Provided by Rajesh Jyotishi

Y

ear after year, criminals try to scam certain taxpayers. Year after year, certain taxpayers resort to schemes in an effort to put one over on the Internal Revenue Service (I.R.S.). These cons occur year-round, not just during tax season. In response to their frequency, the I.R.S. has listed the 12 biggest offenses – scams that you should recognize, schemes that warrant penalties and/or punishment. Phishing. If you get an unsolicited email claiming to be from the I.R.S., it is a scam. The I.R.S. never reaches out via email, regardless of the situation. If such an email lands in your inbox, forward it to phishing@irs.gov. You should also be careful with sending personal information, including payroll

or other financial information, via an email or website.1,2 Phone scams. Each year, criminals call taxpayers and allege that said taxpayers owe money to the I.R.S. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration says that over the last five years, 12,000 victims have been identified, resulting in a cumulative loss of more than $63 million. Visual tricks can lend authenticity to the ruse: the caller ID may show a toll-free number. The caller may mention a phony I.R.S. employee badge number. New spins are constantly emerging, including threats of arrest, and even deportation.1,2 Identity warns that a constant just online.

your mail or rifle through your trash. While the I.R.S. has made headway in terms of identifying such scams when related to tax returns, and

plays an active role in identifying lawbreakers, the best defense that remains is caution when your identity and information are concerned.1,2

Return preparer fraud. Almost 60% of American taxpayers use a professional tax preparer. Unfortunately, among the many honest professionals, there are also some con artists out there who aim to rip off personal information and grab phantom refunds, so be careful when making a selection.1,2

Inflated refund claims. In this scenario, the scammers do prepare and file 1040s, but they charge big fees up front or claim an exorbitant portion of your refund. The I.R.S. specifically warns against signing a blank return as well as preparers who charge based on the amount of your tax refund.1,2

Fake charities. Some taxpayers claim that they are gathering funds for hurricane victims, an overseas relief effort, an outreach ministry, and so on. Be on the lookout for organizations that are using phony names to appear as legitimate charities. A specious charity may ask you for cash donations and/or your Social Security Number and banking information before offering a receipt.1,2

Excessive claims for business credits. In their findings, the I.R.S. specifically notes abuses of the fuel tax credit and research credit. If you or your tax preparer claim these credits without meeting the correct requirements, you could be in for a nasty penalty.1,2 Falsely padding deductions on returns. Some taxpayers exaggerate or falsify deductions

and expenses in pursuit of the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and other federal tax perks. Resist the temptation to pad the numbers and avoid working with scammers

who pressure you to do the same.1,2 Falsifying income to claim credits. Some credits, like the Earned Income Tax Credit, are reported by scammers claiming false income. You are responsible for what appears on your return, so a boosted income can lead to big penalties, interest, and back taxes.1,2 Frivolous tax arguments. There are seminar speakers and books claiming that federal taxes are illegal and unconstitutional and that Americans only have an implied obligation to pay them. These and other arguments crop up occasionally when people owe back taxes, and at present, they carry little weight in the courts and before the I.R.S. There’s also a $5,000 penalty for filing a frivolous tax return, so these fantasies are best ignored.1,2 Abusive tax shelters. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is, and that’s especially true of complicated tax avoidance schemes, which attempt to hide assets through a web of pass-through companies. The I.R.S. suggests that a second opinion from another financial professional might help you avoid making a big mistake.1,2

Offshore tax avoidance. Not all taxpayers adequately report offshore income, and if you don’t, you are a lawbreaker, according to the I.R.S. You could be prosecuted or contend with fines and penalties.1,2 Watch out for these ploys – ultimately, you are the first defense against a scam that could cause you to run afoul of tax law. Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan

By Ashish Kumar

Vince Lombardi, legendary coach of the NFL Green Bay Packers once said, “Plan your work and work your plan.” It is very true that in order to accomplish anything in life, be it good grades in school, financial freedom, or a successful career, you must have a plan. But a recently published research report by Charles Schwab shows that three in five Americans live paycheck to paycheck and that only one in four has a written financial plan. Further, 45 percent of men and women who do not have written financial plan think they do not have enough money to start planning, while 20 percent say they never thought of having a financial plan, and another 20 percent say they wouldn’t know how to start planning.

Millennial versus Older Generations According to the same research report, millennials are in many cases more focused on saving, investing and financial planning than older generations: •

31% percent have a written financial plan compared to 20% of Gen X and 22% of Boomers.

• 36% have specific savings goals compared to 25% of

Gen X and 17% of Boomers. • Nearly three-quarters regularly rebalance their investment portfolios compared to 66% of Gen X and 64% of Boomers. • Millennials are almost as likely as Boomers to work with a financial advisor (22% and 25%, respectively) while Gen X lags (16%). • 64% of millennials believe they will become wealthy in their lifetime.

Men versus Women

In another similar survey, Schwab found that young women are more driven to reach

financial independence than young males (67% vs. 58%). They are more likely to take on extra work to make ends meet (28% vs. 23%) and see more value than men in creating a plan to achieve their financial goals (76% vs. 64%). Yet, despite all these good ‘first’ measures, they are investing and saving less than young men.

men) say they have skipped vacation or travel to save money. While the women surveyed report spending 36% less than men, they have far less savings than men ($1,267 vs. $2,000) – a nearly 60% difference. In addition, twice as many young men as women say they would invest spare cash, and almost twice as many young men as women report having investment accounts (though most

young adults do not invest at all). Finally, women surveyed were slightly more likely to carry a balance on a credit card, miss a bill payment and ask their parents for money to cover necessities.

Benefits of Financial Plan The research and the following table reveals that having a written financial plan can lead to better daily money behaviors.

Overall, women surveyed show greater awareness of dayto-day finances, budgeting and spending. More young women than men understand the value of making a financial plan, and higher percentages of women say they want to pay their own bills, remain debt-free and live independently. For example: • More young women (76% vs. 64% of men) say putting together a financial plan is very important to reaching their financial goals; • Almost half of these young women (49% vs. 39% of men) cite paying off student loans as a goal; and • More women surveyed (41% vs. 32% of men) cited paying off credit card debt as a goal. • Almost three quarters of women surveyed (73% vs. 56% of men) say they have chosen to hold off on buying something they wanted in order to save money. • More than a third of women surveyed (36% vs. 27% of

Parents Know Best According to the report, below is some advice parents should start giving children at a young age: • Parents should convey the same messages to boys and girls about money, but may need to tailor those conversations based on the individual and gender. • While boys are spending more than girls, they also are saving more. Have open and honest conversations with your daughter(s) about the wage and savings gap. • Teach kids about the importance of investing – especially girls, who as we see in this study, aren’t investing as much. Part of being financially prepared is learning to make the most of your money, and that means investing early and consistently. • Encourage your children to take full advantage of a company retirement plan early and contribute at least up to the company match, more if possible. While retirement should be a top priority for everyone, it’s especially important for women, who tend to live longer than men.

Siddharth Roy Kapur, the president of the Film Producers Guild, and Prasoon Joshi, the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) were also present.

Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty’s Simmba gives audience a Mass Hero second half of the film takes a different turn as Simmba gets involved in a rape-revenge drama, thus making him explore the right side of the law.

Rohit Shetty’s Simmba is actually a mix of Dabangg and Singham to some extent, but what it leaves audiences with is a mass hero to love in form of Ranveer Singh. It is a remake of Telugu blockbuster Temper.

Ranveer Singh plays ACP Sangram Bhalerao aka Simmba, who is colorfully and happily corrupt. And the first half of the film is all about how he is happy to align himself with the antagonist, Durwa Ranade (Sonu Sood). The

The last Bollywood release of the year, Simmba got a lot of mixed reviews from the critics, who panned the story but praised Ranveer’s approach to the character and its mass appeal. Speaking of the Box Office, Simmba got Ranveer the biggest opening of his career by raking Rs 20 crore and Rs 24 crore on its first two days respectively. Simmba has even surpassed opening day record of Ranveer’s earlier film, Padmaavat. Apart from Ranveer Singh, the film also stars Sara Ali Khan, Ashutosh Rana, and Ajay Devgan.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero Fails to Entice Audience One of the most awaited films of 2018, Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero was released on December 21. The film also stars actress Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the lead role. SRK’s dream project, which has been jointly produced by Colour Yellow Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment's Gauri Khan, has not left much impact on the box office. The story revolved around 38-year-old Bauua Singh (Shah Rukh Khan), a vertically challenged man from Meerut and his attempts to find love. He falls in love with a scientist Aafia Bhinder (Anushka Sharma), who has cerebral palsy. But as he sets his heart on marrying her, he meets

Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif), a leading superstar. And, thus be-

gins the twist and turns of an unusual love triangle. The film turned out to be an ambitious project that failed to deliver on many levels, even with its stellar cast. Most critics and viewers panned the film’s second half, calling it aimless and lost. It was praised for its inspiring concept and storyline, featuring a vertically challenged man, who is definitely a largerthan-life character. While the film has got mixed reviews from the critics, its box office story is a sad tale. The film that was made on the budget of Rs. 200 crore, collected Rs. 20.14 crore on its first day. Zero’s first weekend earning at domestic box office was Rs. 59.07 crore.

Trailer of Anil Kapoor & Sonam Kapoor film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga launched The trailer of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is out, and the film promises to be an emotional roller coaster ride. The film stars real life fatherdaughter duo, Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. Written and directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is definitely not a usual love story. The trailer hints towards a same-sex love story, with Sonam Kapoor playing a lesbian character. In the trailer, Sonam is seen as playing Sweety Chaudhary, who like most girls has dreamt of a fairytale romance and wedding from a young age. As she grows, her father, played by Anil Kapoor, is very keen on finding the right groom for her. But as the trailer progresses we

see that in her heart Sweety harbors a ‘secret’ and not everything is easy when it comes to love. With a Punjabi family at its heart, the film promises to be filled with loads of drama, emotions and ‘siyappa’.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga also stars Rajkummar Rao, Juhi Chawla, Brijendra Kala, and Seema Pahwa. Vidhu Vinod Chopra has produced it in association with Fox Star Studios.

Star Plus’ TV Show Ishqbaaz takes a generation leap One of the hit TV shows of Star Plus has taken a generation leap with most of the old cast being eliminated. Actor Nakuul Mehta has been retained in the new season as Shivaansh Singh Oberoi, son of Shivaay (Nakuul) and Anika (Surbhi Chandna). Post leap, Nakuul is seen donning a brand new look, complete with a funky hairstyle. A few weeks before the leap, the makers had released promos that showed the earlier main characters, Shivaay and Anika, talking about their son, which gave the fans a brief insight into the new storyline. Shivaansh plays a carefree, successful rockstar, who is quite unlike his

father Shivaay, who was a sophisticated businessman. The old story concluded with Shivaay and Anika dying in a mysterious car accident, and the new story will take that thread forward along with some new characters. In the new show debutant actress Manjiri Pupala is playing Aditi, a police office, and Shivaansh’s love interest. Before the leap happened, Nakuul Mehta and Surbhi Chandna

took to social media to bid an emotional farewell to their characters, Shivaay and Anika respectively. With the leap and the new storyline, the show’s name has got a makeover as well Ishqbaaz: Pyaar Ki Ek Dhinchaak Kahaani.

Sunil Grover’s new Comedy Show Kanpur Wale Khuranas on Star Plus After his very public spat with Kapil Sharma, comedian and actor Sunil Grover is now back on television with a new show. After a short break, the actor is back on Star Plus with Kanpur Wale Khuranas. This is not the first time Sunil went his own way with a TV show. His first show as a lead, Mad In India had turned out to be a debacle, forcing the actor to join Kapil Sharma show. But after their public fallout last year, he is now back with Kanpur Wale Khuranas. The show’s cast includes Ali Asgar, Upasana Singh, and Sugandha Mishra, who too were a part of Kapil Sharma’s ear-

lier show, Comedy Nights With Kapil. Sisters Preeti and Neeti Simoes, who were earlier creative directors for Kapil Sharma’s show, have produced Kanpur Wale Khuranas. Also joining the team is director Farah Khan and actor Aparshakti Khurana. TV actress Adaa Khan is also a part of the show, playing Sunil Grover’s on-screen wife. Actor Armaan Kohli arrested for Illegal Possession of Liquor

Bollywood and TV’s controversial actor Armaan Kohli once made headlines for all the wrong reasons when the Excise department arrested him for illegal possession of liquor. Bandra excise department raided the Ex-Bigg Boss contestant’s Mumbai residence, and he was caught for possessing 41 bottles of scotch whiskey, majority of which were purchased overseas. According to law, a person cannot keep more than 12 hard liquor bottles at home for a month. Apart from the 41 bottles, officials also found 35 empty alcohol bottles at his house, which had been consumed at private parties. After spending a night at the Bandra excise office, the actor was granted bail, with a bond of Rs. 20,000. This is not the first time the actor has found himself on the wrong side of the law. In June this year, Armaan was arrested for assaulting his former girlfriend Neeru Randhawa, who later took back her case against him. Also, earlier this month another FIR was lodged against him for allegedly verbally and physically abusing a fashion designer. Kohli made his Bollywood debut in 1992 with Virodhi. He was last seen on-screen in the Salman Khan film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. He was also a participant in Bigg Boss 7.
