How to Raise a Genius
54
The most important thing driving a young child to become a genius is parents’ love. Parents dream to raise a child who is healthy, happy and successful. The child needs attention, affection and care of the parents to be raised properly. Being polite and understanding is more necessary than being smart. Children must know that their opinions are valued by their parents. 6

JULY 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Edito r’s V iew Dear Readers, Scientist and former Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam once said, “Learning gives creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge, and knowledge makes you great.” It is truly our pleasure to showcase such great Indian American kids who have, once again showed the entire world their creativity and knowledge by winning in variety of fields. These remarkable kids have shown their hard work and perseverance from the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition and National Geography Bee competition to poetry competitions. Similarly, this year the list of Valedictorians/Salutatorians has become larger than ever before. It seems like in a very short time, we will need a special edition of Desh-Videsh just to list all the Indian Americans who have become Valedictorians/Salutatorians at their respective high schools. As we have seen for the last few years on social media and in blog comments demonizing these hardworking Indian American kids, and this year was no different. But one thing I noticed this year that was different than previous years is that most mainstream media including CNN and The Washington Post avoided using the word Indian-American in their headline. It was very amusing to read some of the comments on The Washington Post like, “Where are all the American kids?” Or blaming our school system, it was also very refreshing to read one blogger comment, “The spelling bee is not all about memorization. There’s critical thinking involved. There’s endurance. There is patience. And there is grit and determination. All are essential attributes to success in life.” Colin Powell, Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State said the same thing a bit differently, “A dream does not become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” And speaking of sweat, determination and hard work, don’t miss the article about 16-year-old Indian American Nimrit Doad, who is Founder of Skin Care Plush. What a remarkable story! Another remarkable thing about this article is that it is written by Amara, a 17-year-old who has already graduated from both high school and college with dual enrollment. To show the creative thinking side of our kids, this year in our Education special we have added one new section, poetry. Keshav Shah, 8th grader; Aarohi Talati, 10th grader; and Faren Rajkumar, college student, have expressed their feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm through poetry. Year after year and issue after issue, reading articles about successful Indian American kids, you start wondering why education pundits, school board members, and other parents do not understand the simple facts behind student success. Among several factors that attribute success to the child, education and parent involvement are at the top of the list. This issue’s article, “How to Raise a Genius” discusses this and some of the other factors. Let me close this column by inviting you all to join us at our two upcoming MyShadi Bridal Expos, one in Fort Lauderdale on August 12 at the Bonaventure Resort & Spa, and the other in Orlando on September 16 at the Hilton Orlando. See you there! Raj Shah Managing Editor

14th Consecutive Win for Indian-Americans in Scripps Spelling Bee The 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee was held May 31, which added 238 competitors for a total record breaking 515 contestants to the national tournament. The winning glory rested with 14-yearold Karthik Nemmani who astonishingly beat veteran competitor Nyasa Modi, thus winning the championship. The winning word was ‘koinonia,’ a word that of Greek origin that means “an intimate spiritual or Christian communion.”

The victory of the eighth grader was well deserved as he struggled to enter the competition. A wild card contestant, Nemmani did not win a county or regional spelling bee contest. He managed to enter the competition through a new program called RSVBee to prove his mettle. In order to give competitors from highly competitive regions a chance to enter the contest, the Wild Card entry was introduced. Spelling Bee spokesperson Valerie Millar said encouraging the RSVBee program “... (the RSVBee has) been great from the speller’s perspective. We see the program as a way to level the playing field.”

Dr. Natarajan says initially he wasn’t aware of how colossal his achievement was until recently when he realized his victory meant a lot for his community. An Indian-American winning the Spelling Bee is hardly a surprise given that 19 out of 95 winners are of Indian origin. Winning the National Spelling Bee gives the Indian community a chance to proudly represent America. The watershed year was 1985 when Balu Natarajan became the first Indian-American to win the championship with the word “milieu.” Now a 26

Natarajan is a board member of non-profit organisation North South Foundation, which is known for hosting spelling competitions and preparing the ground for nearly all recent champions. Natarajan, who holds high hopes for his community, said, “it’s become now a good cycle where certain Indian-Americans succeed and I think they have inspired others to do the same. He feels rewarded if he plays a small part in preparing these kids. Akash Vukoti took the internet by storm when he won his first championship at the age of 4. He entered his first spelling bee contest when he was two and became the youngest speller at the nationals in 2016 at the age of six. It explains how brilliant these children are and undoubtedly shows the hard work put in by them and their families. With the passage of time the
competition has become tougher than previous years. Even the most accomplished spellers fear missing out a few vocabulary words. However, many of them are confident enough and hope to get through in upcoming competitions.
16-Year-Old Indian American, Nimrit Doad, Founder of Skin Care Plush
By Amara Leggett
Nimrit Doad is 16 years old, Indian American, and the CEO of Skin Care Plush. After two years of experimenting with different products that irritated her face and made her acne worse, she was ready to try natural remedies. Beginning at the age of 13, she tried, tested, and succeeded with essential oils that alleviate redness and dryness. With amazing feedback from friends, a business was born. Nimrit offers allnatural Jasmine, Lavender, and Tea Tree acne oils. She has also extended her products to sell Jasmine, Lavender, and Orange scent bath bombs. Her skincare line is homemade and created for sensitive skin. Nimrit’s oils are an easy night time routine to be applied on problem areas after cleansing your face before bed. Her mother inspired her to use essential oils for acne, and her father helped with the business. 32
She began building a business plan in March 2017 and eventually began the company in March 2018. Although Nimrit is the CEO of a natural skincare business, she is also a high school student. She wakes up at 6 o’clock almost everyday and spends early afternoons with her dad to work on Skin Care Plush. Her Dad, Tejinder Doad is an IT professional and also has a business as a DJ. When asked what she would advise other students to think about when starting a business venture, she maintained that you have go for it and have a good support system. Despite the hard work needed to succeed, the sense of accomplishment is a good topic of discussion for a resume. “Take one step at a time” is her favorite quote because it shows that “you will get there in the end no matter what.”
Nimrit’s parents and grandmother are the biggest factors to influence who she is today. In addition to her most enjoyed quote, she also likes to hear from her grandparent “being angry does not get you anywhere.” When asked what the next five years look like for Nimrit Doad, CEO of Skin Care Plush, she stated that she plans to attend Miami University and study dermatology. She hopes to have a dermatology practice along with her skincare line, eventually adding products for

dark spots, discoloration, and acne spots. When I first met Nimrit, I was impressed by the amount of knowledge she had about essential oils and how it could help acne. She spent several months learning, planning, and now selling natural remedies that can help many people with sensitive skin. Has the insurance company denied your hurricane damage claim? Has the insurance company denied your claim for damage to your home?
By Mordechai L. Breier
Did your property insurance company tell you that your deductible is higher than your damage? Did you receive enough money from the insurance company to repair the damage to your home? Did your wife just text you… “Honey, I just walked in the house and I hear gushing water. I can’t see where it’s coming from. There is water all over the floor! What do I do?!? Who should I call ?!?” Are you having sleepless nights wondering… “We made it through hurricane Irma but how are we going to pay for the damage to our house. There’s water stains on my ceiling and walls and every time it rains the stains get bigger and now mold is growing on the walls…” Are you doing take out for dinner tonight again…“My child was making dinner and started a fire in my kitchen. Besides for not being able to cook in the kitchen the smell of smoke is overwhelming throughout the house!” 34
Whether you are a new homeowner or have been living in your home for 30 years, you may eventually need to file a claim with your property insurance company. In this situation, most people will wonder what do I do now? A quick Google search will probably direct you to a public adjuster’s website, but is a public adjuster really your best option? JULY 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Should I hire an attorney or a public adjuster to help me with my insurance claim? In the U.S., clients generally tend to contact their attorney only after an issue arises. Although many people begin their claim process with a public adjuster, they will most likely need to hire an attorney because the insurance company will want to take a recorded statement or examination under oath or because your claim is being delayed, underpaid, or worse – denied. An attorney who also provides adjusting services can provide the same benefits as a public adjuster with the added benefit that your attorney is ready for immediate legal action. This immediacy reduces your downtime in the processing and handling of your claim and will most likely maximize your recovery.
36
That is why an attorney can and should be hired as early into the claim process as possible because this enhances the likelihood that the homeowner will get a fair payment to compensate their loss so that they can make the necessary repairs. An attorney who is experienced in fighting insurance companies and has a good track record of winning such cases for clients is in a much stronger position than a public adjuster to negotiate larger settlements from an insurance company. Additionally, only your attorney can provide legal advice as to your rights and obligations under your insurance policy and is trained to interpret your insurance policy to make sure you are getting the benefits you are entitled to under your policy. That is why I advise when you have an insurance claim to first call an attorney who specializes in homeowners insurance litigation to

I already hired a public adjuster is it too late to call a insurance litigation attorney? If your claim is being processed by a public adjuster you should still contact an attorney who specializes in homeowners insurance litigation ASAP for a free consultation to discuss your case and see how an attorney can bring value to your claim. stressed by the damage inflicted on your property or the loss of a valuable piece of property. If your property sustained any hurricane damage, roof leak, roof damage, water damage, flood, mold, fire, smoke, theft and vandalism, or if your claim is denied or even partially denied, then contact the Consumer Law Office, P.A. Our experienced and aggressive insurance litigation attorneys will negotiate with the insurance company on your behalf and litigate as necessary to see that you get the benefits you are entitled to. While many law firms handle all different areas of law, fighting insurance company’s is all we do.

honor that we recognize Parth Shah as well as Aarohi Talati, who follows in her father’s footsteps as a seeker. Please help me in congratulating Parth Shah and AarohiTalati on this great honor. These individuals have truly embraced the essence of our Vedic knowledge. Aarohi has been a part of our program for the past ten years, having attended balvihar since she was four. She shares: “When I was younger, I used to dread having to wake up early on the weekend to go to the temple— everyone who knows me knows how much I value my sleep. However, over the years, balvihar has become a significant part of my life. I have genuinely enjoyed almost every class, especially the last two years with Chirag Uncle and Dr. Shaykhar. My favorite classes throughout all my years of balvihar were when we related religion, spirituality, and philosophy to science in the Junior Yuvaks class. I have always been a relatively spiritual person on the inside— due to how I was raised, and with whom. My father was well known in this community, and I strive to be more like him every day. Before, I used to feel out of place, not believing in the same things as the majority of my classmates in school. However, now, I am proud to say that I am Hindu. I am confident in showcasing our beautiful religion, faith, and culture. I know that I have a JULY 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

ually gone deeper into depth. The classes have shown me the truth behind each of the teachings and have shown me the ways to implement them. The sevaks have bestowed me with this knowledge in a way I can understand and apply to myself. It has taught me to stand for my principles and beliefs in all situations. Each of my classes have their own unique memories. In each of the classes, I have learned something new and enjoyed my time. One of my favorite memories from Bala Vihar is from Jr. Yuvaks, during one of the debates where my classmates and I conversed about the topic at hand to create a learning experience that I will always cherish.
We would like to congratulate Aarohi Talati, daughter of Amit and Rupal Talati, on her Bala Vihar graduation. Parth Shah has been part of the education program since Yashoda Bala. He shares: “I have had the opportunity to attend Bala Vihar since the first class, Yashoda Bala, and it has been a beautiful 13 years of spiritual growth. Bala Vihar has laid the foundation for who I am as a person. It has transformed me into the person I am and has given me the ability to stay level-headed in the most stressful of times. Bala Vihar has inspired me to continuously rethink myself and every aspect of my life in the pursuit of improving it and making my lifestyle healthier. Each of the classes has had a tremendous impact on me as a person. By Aarohi Talati
Bursting in flames, you rose from the ashes. You came up to breathe again, to continue to live. Death made you start from scratch, exactly like a Phoenix. They die in a ball of fire, only to come back in three days from the ashes of its predecessor. And you, you compare to this creature. This creature that is the epitome of all things indestructible. You came back - it took only three years. You're stronger than ever, and you will always rise from the ashes. You will always rise. About the Poet Aarohi Talati, 16, is a junior at American Heritage. Her academic interests include computer science and medicine. Although she is very studious, she always makes time for her hobbies. One of her greatest passions is writing— she writes often in her free time, ranging from short poetry to short stories to chapters out of a novel. Singing and dancing are also both things she enjoys, and she is almost done with both the Bharatnatyam curriculum and Hindustani classical music curriculum.

How to Raise a Genius The most important thing driving a young child to become a genius is parents’ love. Parents dream to raise a child who is healthy, happy and successful. The child needs attention, affection and care of the parents to be raised properly. Being polite and understanding is more necessary than being smart. Children must know that their opinions are valued by their parents. Now let’s discuss some factors that are responsible for helping your child become a genius.
Reading to your child helps him or her connect with surroundings and gather information about the outside world. Reading is the foundation of all knowledge and so it is very beneficial for children. Praising the child helps them to think about themselves. Proper encouragement helps them in the long run. However, do not over praise them;
Music training helps to develop attention, concentration, patience and discipline. It has biological effects too, developing the child’s nervous system. Engaging in sports is very important. This can be any type of sport from yoga to karate and provides the child with a foundation to do their best in any aspect of life.
neither should you criticize them in a too negative way. There should be a balance in the way you are praising. Grab every opportunity to teach the child. While coming back home from work, ask your child how the day was spent. While shopping, ask him or her the names and prices of the goods purchased. Encourage the curious nature of the child. They can be taken to museums, art galleries, and zoos, all of which stimulates interesting ideas. 54

Minimum conflict is a must for good upbringing of the kid. This helps the child to learn and grow properly with right behavior.
• Parents should not push popularity. Intelligent kids do not have an easy time fitting in. They also have fewer friends than average children.

8th Grade
Marshall Middle School: Wexford, PA Aquabot: An Integrated Modular Platform for Testing and Monitoring Surface Water Quality Project Background: “I often hear about high levels of contamination in waterways very close to my home,” says Meghna. Those concerns have grown as people worry about spills from wastewater produced by hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which helps get natural gas out from deep shale. “Globally, the lack of clean water poses a significant problem,” Meghna adds. Regular water testing is an important step for figuring out if there’s a problem. “However, our current water testing methods are extremely inefficient,” she says. She set out to develop a method that would be simpler for both scientists and concerned citizens. That led to her platform, “Aquabot.”
ter testing parameter through a formula,” she explains. She added a Bluetooth module to collect and transmit data wirelessly. She also added a GPS module to track the time, date and location of readings. Last but not least, Meghna created a smartphone app to receive and record the data. Then she tested the platform in a local lake. She also got input from water quality inspectors. The data correlated well with handheld sensor readings. And the equipment proved reliable. “In the future, I want to conduct more research on the accuracy of Aquabot’s sensors and make my platform even more fit in field settings,” Meghna says. “I also want to make Aquabot a standard tool for all water quality inspectors.”
Tactics and Results: Meghna’s automated testing device has dual motors powering an axle with propellers. Lots of tinkering made sure it could be controlled wirelessly and would travel well in water. Meghna mounted a variety of sensors on the device and connected them to Arduino microcontrollers. “I wrote a program for each sensor, which converts voltage to the respective wa-
Other Interests: Meghna plays the violin and loves to sing. She’s also active in scouting, swimming, track, and cross country. Meghna loves working with her robotics team and hopes to become a computer engineer. “I enjoy thinking of novel ways to approach challenges,” she says. “I am also good at working with others, which is needed for most careers.”

Pooja Sharma Having a Good Time Colors is once again back in the top position with its shows Naagin 3 and Dance Deewane ruling the TRP charts. While these shows are new, there are some other shows that have sustained their positions in the tough competition over a long time. One of them is the mythological show, Mahakaali: Anth Hi Aa ra m b h Ha i n , s t a r r i n g Pooja Sharmaa in the lead role.
Though the show may not be doing wonders on the rating charts, it has been one of the constant members on the list for quite a long time. The show will now air in Thailand beginning July. On the other hand reports also state that that Star Plus show Mahabharat, where Pooja Sharma plays the role of Draupadi will also be aired in Thailand.
Another Addition to Naagin 3 Cast Naagin 3, which has been getting attention since early June, never fails to disappoint its viewers with a gripping storyline. With every passing weekend, it seems like the line-up will go on reducing with Vish and her vendetta continuing to seek revenge from her enemies. However, the makers are also making some interesting additions to the star cast. The audience will witness a new character in the popular Colors show featuring Surbhi Jyoti and Anita Hassanandani in the lead roles. Mahira Shar70
ma, a popular TV actress who has been a part of quite many shows including Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma will join the show. She was also featured in other SAB TV shows such as Partners and Y.A.R.O. Ki Tashan; however, now she is all set to join the cast of Naagin 3 though her character has not yet been revealed. It cannot be denied that this addition will add thrills and twists to the plot. Already the third season of Naagin, according to various reports, is ahead of Salman Khan’s Dus Ka Dum. Now, time will say whether this new addition will also
add up to the TRP of the show or not. JULY 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Ishqbaaz: Will Shivaay and Anika Finally Meet? A TRP topper, Ishqbaaaz is presently witnessing an appalling twist where Anika (Surbhi Chandna) and Shivaay (Nakuul Mehta) are passing through a test of love vs. destiny and it is getting interesting each day. In the latest episode, the two were very close to meeting each other at the temple; however, contrary to what fans expected, the encounter didn’t happen. Fans aren’t losing hope as the makers have some exciting storylines ahead. It seems that despite destiny trying to hold them back from meeting, their love is pulling them to each other. Anika’s rakhi brother. Khanna will then come to know that Anika is in search of a job and he will ask for Anika’s resume and request his boss Shivaay to see if he can provide her a job. Shivaay was about to see the file when Dadi comes in and it was later discovered by Om-
