For Richa Desai, chiropractor, and Shashank Gandhi, neurosurgery resident, a day on the beach turned out to be something more. Little did Richa know that the walk would turn into a romantic proposal. Ed itor’s V iew Dear Readers, It was 25 years ago that Desh-Videsh magazine first hit newsstands, and 12 years ago in May was when our first wedding special issue came out. So it is with great pleasure that we present our latest wedding special edition. Everything you need from the moment you say “yes” to “I do” or take your four mangal pheras to saying ”Qubool Hai” is right here at your fingertips. If you pay attention to any of the advice shared by the brides and grooms in our real wedding stories, follow this: take time to enjoy your wedding planning process and do not stress about your BIG day. Also don’t forget those “annoying” parents and their wishes - they’ve been planning your wedding since the day you were born! As Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” To make your wedding a success, you have to work together and divide the responsibilities. This issue is full of ideas that will inspire you in every way! Real wedding stories that touch your heart, inspiration that makes you excited. We hope you find bright and colorful ideas on each page and for your wedding. As usual, this issue is filled with real wedding stories, each of which is unique and heart warming. I would like to point out a couple of noteworthy items in two of this issue’s weddings. We’re sorry to have missed Richa and Shashank’s wedding, but from what I heard from friends and what I’ve seen in the pictures and video, it was a spectacular wedding. One of our good friends and community leaders mentioned that this was “the wedding of the year.” And with Hitesh Mehta being an Eco-Landscape Architect, it was not surprising his wedding to Elizabeth was eco-friendly - no flowers were used at any event! None were needed as their picturesque wedding took place in Kenya against the backdrop of safari trails. Recently on Facebook, I mentioned that Aruna and I had the pleasure of joining wedding planners from all over the United States on a wonderful destination FAM trip to Mexico arranged by Jack Benoff from Vacationeeze. It was a great fusion of business and pleasure - and the bonus was meeting so many nice people! Ashley Carrion, a wedding planner at Events-by-C in Chicago, joined us and she wrote an article about this exciting FAM trip - with pictures provided by yours truly! Over the last few years, destination weddings have become very popular among South Asians, specifically Indians. The article will give readers an idea of the latest trends. While the couple did hire a wedding planner, family also helped with much of the planning and arrangements. Their mandap was the largest ever -- 40 feet wide with a 12foot center golden medallion created by Occasions by Shangri-La. crystal chandeliers. Centerpieces included were crystal vases with fresh flowers. The most memorable moment of the entire event was the couple’s “James Bond-esque” entrance on a 12-foot golden rotating medallion, cut a life-size colorful dhol with the sound! A Big Fat Indian wedding it is!

Radha Patel, a pharmacist, and Nisarg Patel, a hospitality management graduate, were married on November 25, 2017. Love blossomed between the couple when they met at a wedding in Raleigh, North Carolina, in August 2014. On their one-year dating anniversary, Radha and Nisarg went on a romantic getaway to Asheville, North Carolina. The proposal happened in the most cinematic way, on a hot air balloon. Radha nodded yes to Nisargâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proposal amidst the enticing autumnal backdrop. A grand wedding and reception was held at the Renaissance Orlando in Sea World and nearly 700 guests attended the festivities. The couple hired a wedding coordinator to organize their lavish wedding. The pre-wedding events were full of traditional, celebratory activities like the mehendi/garba and gruha shanti followed by a pre-wedding reception, during which friends and family keenly participated.

It was a romantic proposal for Radha at the picturesque Hoboken Park in NYC. Siddhant hired a professional photographer to snap pictures against the city skyline as he got down on one knee. Radha was shocked as Siddhant had a proposal ring, and not the engagement ring. She got two rings!

With tall trees, an open green field and river behind the hall, it was the perfect venue. The pre-wedding events were pithi and grahshanti and were held in the zoo hall. convertible Bentley and Radha in a doli. At the wedding, baby elephant installations were erected at the mandap entrance. The bride and groom were dressed in floral outfits. The tables had flowers and tall crystal candle columns. A photobooth allowed guests to take memorable pictures, and thank you gifts included elephant keychains. DJ Pawan played Bollywood and Top 40 hit songs to keep guests celebrating into the night. The video directed Jasmine down some steps, where she was led down a path along where her friends and family waited. “It was covered with candles and rose petals, at the end were Hem and a violinist,” remembered Jasmine. It was a dreamy proposal, followed by celebrations. The couple tied the knot at the bride’s dream wedding venue, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami on December 30, 2017. They hired Karma Goddess to help with the wedding planning. Jasmine and Hem’s wedding and reception, attened by 200 guests, had a rustic vintage theme. The outdoor wedding was a collage of blush pink, mint green and burgundy, and

Jasmine Rajkumar Nebhrajani, a pediatrician, and Hemang J. Thakor, a physician, dated for over two years years before getting engaged. When Hemang first saw Jasmine at the medical school gym, it was love at first sight. He was then introduced to her by friends, and the rest was history! Jasmine, her friends and family went to the Perez Art Museum in Miami -- a trip arranged by Hem. While Jasmine was having lunch, a waitress brought her an iPad to show her a video summarizing the couple’s courtship.

Lovebirds Nirav Desai, a senior accountant and Ami Patel, a medical student, first met on New Year’s Eve 2012. Their first casual meet turned out to be a lifelong alliance. Nirav proposed to Ami in the most dramatic way after two years of dating. Ami and Nirav headed towards Magic Kingdom on Christmas Eve 2016. Nirav planned to propose her on a private boat at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Ami loves water rides and was already enthralled. Finally, when Nirav went down on his knees to propose her, it was a dream come true for the emotional Ami. The couple tied the knot on December 23, 2017. Wedding planner Sokha, from Apsara Events, deftly handled all of the wedding preparations. Keeping in mind the ease of traveling, the lavish Hilton Ocala, in Ocala, Florida, was the couple’s chosen venue. What most drew the couple to the hotel was the magnificent banquet hall.

Hitesh Mehta, and Eco-Landscape Architect, and Elizabeth Joseph, a Nurse Practitioner, met in a unique way. Hitesh had actually mistaken a friend of Liz’s (Valrie) for someone else at a Reggae concert in South Miami and out of embarrassment, he began to invite Valrie to his parties and get-togethers after that. On one such invite to a brunch party in Ft. Lauderdale where Hitesh made curry and dal, Valrie asked Hitesh if she could bring her friend Liz (from Kerala). Hitesh said ‘yes” and the rest is history! After dating for 15 months, Hitesh proposed to Liz. Hitesh, who is from Kenya, once promised Liz he would take her on a once in a lifetime Safari experience in his home country. Hitesh began planning the proposal five months in advance and decided to plan a trip for late July in order to best experience nature and the peak of wildlife season. The Royal wedding and India Connection

The Royal Wedding and the Indian Connection After receiving several emails and text messages suggesting Desh-Videsh should cover the royal wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, my first reaction was “why?” My views on British colonial rule in India and around the world may be one of the reasons. In the end, given the connections with India and prominent Indians, we would be remiss not to cover this event. Some of the connections in order of importance include: 1. Meghan Markle invited social worker Suhani Jalota, founder of Myna Mahila Foundation, from Mumbai along with her foundation members, Archana Ambre, Deborah Das and Imogen Mansfield. 2. Myna Mahila Foundation is based in Mumbai and is one 108
