JUNE 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Dear Readers,
Ed itor’s V iew
Into my will, I take thy heart Thy mind shall dwell in my mind In my words thou shall rejoice With all thy heart, May God join thee to me. What a beautiful vow newlyweds are making to each other when they are just about to start a new journey together. This verse in the form of a vow, taken from an ancient Hindu scripture, Atharvaveda, is one of seven vows Hindu couples recite to one another while taking seven steps together, Saptapadi, as a part of their wedding ritual. Personally, I find these vows to be extraordinarily rich and spiritual, reflecting deep religious and social importance and insight into the various needs and phases that a married couple goes through. Even though these vows were created tens of thousands of years ago, they have an essence of modern values where couples stand equally and promise each other lifelong companionship. Each vow revolves around the necessary elements required to make the marriage successful and the bond between the partners stronger. Let me stop talking about Hindu rituals right here and discuss the Desh-Videsh wedding resource special edition. After two years of uncertainty, the world of weddings and all that is required has returned with a vengeance - and we have the perfect wedding resource guide to assist all the lovely couples and their families with the many decisions that need to be made for their special days. More than 2.5 million couples are expected to tie the knot this year - the biggest number in recent history - with most of the celebrations kicking off this summer. If you’re one of those lucky couples set to walk down the aisle, we’ve got you covered. It’s the summer of love, and we’re ready for it! We have a wide variety of professional wedding vendors listed in this special wedding resource guide. I encourage you to support our advertisers. Their experience, creativity, and expertise are priceless! Do not forget to tell them you found them through Desh-Videsh wedding resource guide. We could not do what we do without them! Once again it is very refreshing and exciting to present to you a few recent Indian weddings in this issue. We have chosen to showcase these weddings from the numerous submissions we received because of their uniqueness. As I have said before in my column, destination weddings are the new big trend for Indian weddings. The concept of destination weddings is becoming popular because of various reasons, namely the convenience of having all of the ceremonies arranged for you and celebrated in one location. No hassle of finding parking places at various locations and no traffic jams!. At the same time, it’s cost effective, practical, and fun. We are covering two such weddings in this issue, one in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and another in Phoenix, Arizona. I hope those of you who are planning your weddings discover some new ideas from these weddings. Speaking of news ideas, we have included one article on Indian designers who are making their entry in Hollywood. All three designers, already popular in India, are becoming popular here in the USA as well. Couples planning their weddings will definitely get some new ideas from these websites. I hope you love what you find in the following pages, and once you have said your seven vows, shoot me your wedding details with the pictures! I would love to cover your wedding in the next issue of Desh-Videsh wedding resource guide. Happy Planning and an even happier ever after!! Raj Shah Managing Editor

hen you’re in the “trenches” of medical school, it helps to have someone along with you. That similar professional commitment made Ronak Gandhi and Milee Patel closer to each other. Both Gandhi and Patel found their soulmates, the love of their lives in each other. The budding doctors started dating back in 2016 as first-year students at the same medical school. Finally, when they were about to relocate to Texas for residency, Gandhi proposed to Patel. It was the beginning of the COVID pandemic with worries and negativity everywhere. However, the two lovers made the best of the situation. Gandhi took Patel to Vizcaya Gardens, her favorite place in Miami, and asked for her hand in marriage. It was the “best day” for Patel, and of course, the answer was an emphatic “YES!”
They decided to tie the marital knot on November 27, 2022. Since both are from South Florida, Gandhi and Patel decided to choose a venue nearby for the convenience of their family and friends. The search for the perfect place ended faster than they expected. When the couple arrived at their first location, the Hilton at West Palm Beach, they instantly agreed that it was perfect! The weekend was colorful and festive with the tune of togetherness and traditions interwoven with flowers, music, and celebration all around. They celebrated Mehndi, Haldi, and Garba as pre-wedding ceremonies. The Mehndi had an elephant theme, Patel’s favorite animal. The elephant was used in various innovative and creative ways, including as centerpieces on numerous tables and as fruit-filled chocolate desserts. A few elephants even made the stage! The Haldi and Garba ceremonies were both traditional. The Garba featured a beautiful idol of RadhaKrishna adorning the event. Beautiful

lights and live music made for a perfect ambience. Both Gandhi and Patel, being fond of donuts, had a “donut wall” at the Garba with donuts from the famous Salty Donuts. There was a surprise entry dance, too. Towards the end of the night, lights were turned down and music was turned, as they danced the night away, just like at a reception.
Popular Bollywood music dominated the setlist. Gandhi arrived on a horse with the Baraat and entered with Patel’s family members. There was a bridal party walking down the aisle before Patel made her entrance. The live band standing up to the guests, the catwalk, and the total festive spirit made it a lively and fun-filled experience for the guests.
For the marriage ceremony, Patel desired a simple and elegant décor without any excess. The comfort of her 450 guests was her top priority. The wedding took place indoors with pink and white flowers on the mandap and the aisle.
The parents of the couple worked for over a year to make this event memorable, and their joint efforts were certainly a success. Thus, the soulmates became life partners with dreams for the golden days ahead.

ates arranged by friends and family don’t often work out, but sometimes… well, the chemistry just might be there. It was Bansry, the cousin of Rushi Shah, who played the matchmaker in pairing him with Karishma Kadakia. Bansry and Kadakia were classmates in med school, and Bansry could envision Kadakia as a potential bride for Shah, so she invited her to her birthday party on July 13, 2018. It was here that the eventual lovebirds would first meet, date for several years, and finally tie the knot. Shah proposed to Kadakia at a rooftop party during the Covid 19 Pandemic. He took her away from the party crowd and proposed to her at a specially decorated, picturesque location on the pool deck floor. Entering a new level of the relationship, they decided to tie the marital knot in the presence of family and friends.
The duo wanted a destination wedding at a beautiful place far from the inquiring eyes of fans. They chose the beautiful Hard Rock - Punta Cana Resort on the shore of the Caribbean Sea in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Their choice was a gorgeous one, overlooking the beach, and the resort provided a comfortable stay for all 270 guests. The celebrations began on April 21 and 22, as the lucky couple engaged in the pre-wedding ceremonies of Mehndi, Pithi, and Sangeet before the big day on April 23, 2022. The Mehndi ceremony was combined with a welcome event for all the guests. The innovative celebration took place on a water canal at the resort, featuring a raised platform atop the pool, where guests could watch as Kadakia’s hands and feet were adorned with her special henna design. It was such a hit that the couple celebrated their Haldi ceremony in the same location with orange and yellow flowers. Finally, the Sangeet capped off the pre-wedding ceremonies with the families uniting on an outdoor terrace embellished with an Italian theme. The Big Day finally arrived! Rushi Shah and Karishma Kadakia became husband and wife on the beach with the beautiful ocean waters as the backdrop. The couple tied the knot under a mint-colored Mandap adorned with flowers and a white canopy. Much like a prince in a fairytale, Shah rode in on a horse.
Contemporary Hindi songs and Bhangra dominated the music selection throughout the night. The groom entered with the bride’s parents to a Tere Bina “Girls Like You” mashup song by Jeffrey Iqbal, and the bride entered to Kaise Hua. The two enjoyed their special day before leaving the beach as husband and wife in an antique Bentley. The party was just beginning! The reception in the evening featured a Harry Potter theme. Tables boasted chocolate golden snitches for every guest. Beside each place setting lay a mini broom with a love quote from the Harry Potter books while the backdrop of the hall presented a candlelit decoration in “Hogwarts” style. Floating candles added an extra bit of romance to the Harry Potter theme. The theme, however, paled in comparison to the bride and groom’s dance performances. The couple and their families danced the night away to a melodious mix of Bollywood and Hip-Hop songs. The beautiful destination wedding at the Hard Rock - Punta Cana was the perfect beginning to what promises to be a wonderful life for the newlyweds.

hey met as college students, but it was years later before true love blossomed. Meera Patel and Sagar Shah both studied at the University of Illinois at Chicago where they had a brief introduction. A decade later, they met again through the dating app Hinge and then began their love story on their first date in March 2018. A couple of years went by and both were in love with each other. Sagar wanted to take their relationship to the next level and prepared to propose to his lady. He planned a road trip to Traverse City, Michigan, and popped the question to the wine-loving Meera at Bower’s Harbor Vineyards. Then the wedding planning began! The date was set for March 26, 2022, four years after their first date. The couple desired a destination wedding, away from their hometowns. They chose the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes located in Tempe, Arizona. Arizona was on their wish list because of its exquisite natural beauty.
The wedding festivities spanned four days. Celebrations included a Sangeet, Vidhis, Grah Shanti, and Pithi. The Sangeet/Garba was an evening party and featured a Moroccan theme with lanterns and umbrellas, bright colors and bistro lights. They had their Grah Shantis separately. Meera had it on top of the rock while Sagar had it in the ballroom. A Pithi was also observed. The wedding was indoors and began early in the morning. There was an acrylic Mandap with white hydrangeas along the top and down the raised aisle. The theme was simplistic, having neutral colors and flowers. Their grandmothers were their flower girls and their grandfather was the ring bearer, representing the deep family values they both hold. Further displaying their dedication to family was a memory table to commemorate their ancestors and a phone guest book.
Sagar led the Baraat in a red BMW M4, his favorite car. An abundance of music and dance made the wedding joyful. All the 300 guests enjoyed it to their hearts’ content. The reception in the evening, too, was a happy evening, as the music and dancing continued. For their first dances, Meera and Sagar chose the songs “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha” and “Raataan Lambiyan” while they saved “If I Lose Myself” by One Republic for their last dance. The couple enjoyed every moment of their wedding ceremonies. However, the best moment was that of their marriage amidst the rising sun. It was the beginning of a new day, and a new beginning in the life of Meera and Sagar.

ove found its way between Rina and Rikhil when they got in touch with each other after college. Despite going to the same High School they lost touch during college. They dated for 4 years after which Rikhil proposed to Rina after Thanksgiving in 2019. They met at the restaurant City Winery on the Chicago River Walk. It was a family get-together with parents, siblings and close friends and they got engaged before them. All of them celebrated the engagement of the loving couple the whole night. It was a happy and memorable event for the couple. They decided to get married in August 2020, but it was delayed due to the pandemic. Hence it was rescheduled for August 21, 2021. Both Rina and Rikhil’s families live in Chicagoland. So they wanted a venue nearby. However, since many of Rina’s family members were supposed to travel, they also wanted a hotel for their stay. They finalized The Westin Chicago Northwest in Itasca as their ideal venue.
The pre-wedding ceremonies were simple with a personal touch. Mehndi was celebrated at a place in the Park District, with an indoor area along with a playground. The décor was simple with the couple’s hashtag and a colorful backdrop. A flower-studded white bench was there for Rina. There was also a live dosa counter at the playground. Rina’s Grah Shanti was at Westin and Rikhil had it at his parent’s house.
The wedding ceremony was in the morning. It was an outdoor function with the color theme of peach, red, mint, and cream as per the choice of the couple. There was color coordination between the groomsmen with the bride and the bridesmaid with the groom. Rikhil came to the wedding in a Lamborghini huracan. However, he had to walk halfway along a lake to reach the Mandap! There was a perfect blend of Indian and American music at the wedding which uplifted the festive spirit and entertained all the 200 guests present there. The reception was in the grand ballroom of the hotel. The color theme consisted of navy and gold with floating candles and flowers as centerpieces. Uplighting and sparklers set the party mood. There were beautiful dance performances by the parents of both bride and the groom, brothers and touching speeches by friends and cousins. The couple chose the music which was a blend of American and Indian dance music. The pandemic upset many of their plans. Still, both Rina and Rikhil were happy that their wedding ceremonies were enjoyed by one and all.

Frequently asked Questions on Premium Processing
W
hat exactly is Premium Processing?
Premium processing is a service, where available, for an extra fee employers can get a decision from the USCIS much more quickly on certain employment-based visa petitions. This usually costs $2,500 and you should get a decision in 15 (or 45) calendar days depending on the visa classification. The premium processing service is an optional additional filing fee/form that is usually filed at the time you submit your petition. Both employmentbased immigrant visas (such as the EB-1/EB-2) and employment-based non-immigrant visas (such as the H-1B) can use premium processing. Is premium processing available for my wife’s petition? Unfortunately, no. The USCIS does not have premi um processing available for any family-based
62
petitions (I-130 “Petition for Alien Relative”). Your best strategy is to speak to an immigration attorney and arrange for your petition to be filed efficiently and early. Should I use Prem ium Processing? What are some risks and benefits of pursuing a Premium Processing Service? It really depends on the priorities of the employer and how urgently they want to be able to sponsor and then hire a potential foreign employee. For example, if an employer wants quicker access to talented international workers like software engineers, researchers, or business executives, the premium processing service may be appealing. Without premium processing, employers may have to wait an additional number of months before their petitions get approved. However, premium processing only speeds up the
approval time for the initial petition (such as the I-140). The availability or scheduling of consular interviews is an entirely different process and there may still be long waits for appointments at the U.S. Consulates. Remember, Premium Processing is an additional filing fee that is paid to the government (USCIS) and not to your immigration attorney. It is not the same as requesting your attorney to do a “rush job” where you need to request (and possibly pay extra) for your attorney to work faster and prioritize your case to get it filed under a specific deadline. Immigration attorneys typically work on schedules and generally have a certain time frame in mind to file for a specific visa and obtain all the necessary supporting documents and evidence. Here is a good analogy of Premium Processing in the Green Card

context . Imagine a 100-mile-long immigration journey on a crowded highway. Premium processing for an immigrant visa (employmentbased green card) is like paying for the express pass on the interstate for 40% of the journey. For an additional cost, you can bypass a lot of the traffic for the first 40 miles, but once the express lanes end, you still are in the same congested line for the last 60 miles waiting for your consulate interview. Opting for premium processing is beneficial in the opinion of most experienced immigration attorneys but is not without its risks. Outside of the additional cost, some legal professionals believe that the USCIS is stricter when adjudicating employment/ investment visa petitions under premium processing. In the long run, as long as you and your immigration attorney believe you meet the specific requirements of your work/ business visa category, paying for
If you have a pending I-140 for extraordinary ability seeking a National Interest Wavier (EB-2 NIW) received by Mar 1, 2021, you can upgrade to premium processing after July 1, 2022.
premium processing is usually the right decision. I just read somewhere that there are brand new changes to Premium Processing?
To do this upgrade, a current pending petitioner must file a Form I-907, which is a “Request For a Premium Processing Service”.
Starting on June 1, 2022, the USCIS will allow for certain heavily backlogged pending/previously filed employment-based visa applications to upgrade to a premium processing service when it was previously not available.
Remember, the USCIS will reject Premium Processing requests (for those previously mentioned classifications) that are filed before their start date of June 1, 2022 or July 1, 2022. Also, the USCIS will not accept new I-140s in these two categories with a premium processing request at this time - only pending applications can make this request.
If you have a pending I-140 for a multi-national manager/executive (L-1 visa) received by Jan 1, 2021, you can upgrade to premium processing after June 1, 2022.
In next month’s issue of Desh Videsh, I will have in-depth discussion about extraordinary/ exceptional ability visas and National Interest Waivers.

Indian Designers at the Oscars and the Grammys This year, B e it the magical six yards of saree or a lehenga, even the salwar kameez, Indian attires are the favorites of many around the globe. Not just the dresses, but the creators of those dresses, the supertalented Indian fashion designers, have made their talent appreciated and sought after in the international showbiz arena of Hollywood. Their creativity, designs, and intricate detailing have established many of them as ace designers in Hollywood. Some famous Indian designers who have made great impressions and have created a fan following include Gaurav Gupta, Tina Tandon, and Falguni Shane Peacock among others. Recently, these talented designers made a big splash at events like the Oscars and the Grammys.

Gupta’s couture gowns have become a great fashion statement in Hollywood. The gowns feature elements of sculpture that make them distinctly different. Gupta began his academic career in the Delhi-based National Institute of Fashion Technology and graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
This year, rapper Megan Thee Stallion wore a Gupta couture gown for her debut at the 2022 Oscars. The icy-blue, ruffled gown looked glamorous and elegant with a thighhigh slit on the left side. The designer created this “Biomorphic Fantasy Gown” with a mystical sea creature in mind.

The Indian American designer Tina Tandon successfully blends both cultures in her creations. Born in the US, spending her early childhood in India, and returning to the US where she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City made Tina’s exposure truly global and foundations versatile. Today, she heads two famous brands - T.Tandon for the American styles and Posh Pari which makes beautiful Indo-Fusion centers of designer clothes. Singer Falguni Shah, better known as Falu, received the Grammy Award in the Best Children’s Album category this year. She was beautifully decked out in a Tina Tandon dress on the red carpet. Her bright red, flowy Brocade dress with a Georgette jacket in gold embroidery was a stunning IndoFusion dress that looked elegant from every corner. The husband and wife duo of Shane and Falguni Peacock created internationally acclaimed dresses for
women, highlighting their beauty, charm, and elegance. They launched their flagship store Peacock Pret in 2003. The couple worked together and expanded their empire in London, Manchester, Miami, and Dubai in addition to India. While shooting scenes for her series And Just Like That in NYC, actress and fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker donned a Falguni and Shane Peacock lehenga. The Sex and the City star is famous for her fashion sense and great style. The lehenga she wore was a combination of maroon and blue with detailed embroidery work. The blouse was full-sleeve with traditional Rajasthani work on it. They all are artists who have successfully blended western and Indian cultures, designs, and specialties through their creations. Their eye for details and aesthetic sense has made the Indian designers globally famous which is a pride and honor for India.
