Editor’s View Dear Readers, Bahaar, Basant, Vasant, Spring. The loveliest of all seasons is here. One of the greatest poets in classical Sanskrit literature Kalidasa calls it the king of seasons. I am not sure about you, but every spring brings me feelings of freshness. There is something about the spring that makes the world feel like it’s starting anew, there is a sense of excitement in the air, the romance, the cheerfulness, nature’s finest manifestation in all her beauty. It reminds us that cold and gloomy days of winter do not last forever, both literally and mentally. Instead, the first day of spring represents a time of rejuvenation. It’s a season that allows nature to come back to life with full vigor and total beauty. Maybe I feel this way because I was born on the first day of spring! Another reason I’m excited this time of year is because I get the chance to chat with newlyweds for the Desh-Videsh spring wedding issue. They all are excited to start their new journey together, and I can feel the excitement in their voice and in their writing. It is our pleasure once again to present recent weddings of Florida and Georgia. In this issue, we feature Anand and Richa’s wedding, a wedding we had the pleasure to attend. We have watched Anand grow up over the last 25 years. Congratulations Anand and Richa and all other newlyweds in this issue! I would also like to welcome writer Satya Patel to the Desh-Videsh team. Satya is a marketing expert, but after planning her own wedding in 2014, she became a wedding planning expert and started a blog and website. Check out her web site www. indianweddingtoolkit.com. The last couple of wedding issues have included a new section that includes the best of the best photographs from one feature photographer. This issue, we present “Must have Photos” from Sona Photography. Having been featured on several Desh-Videsh Wedding issue covers and real wedding stories in these issues, Stephana and Mona, the dynamic ladies of Sona Photography, have won the hearts of Desh-Videsh readers. Newly engaged couples, don’t miss taking a look at some of these breathtaking photographs! Speaking of newly engaged couples, we have two exciting MyShadi Bridal Expos coming up for you - one in Atlanta on March 25, and one in Orlando on April 15. Visit www.myshadibrdialexpos.com to register to attend online. Avoid long lines at the show and register for your chance to win free honeymoon tickets to India. See you there! The wedding’s theme was coral, pink, green, and yellow with peacock themed fans, having personalized ceremony details.

What happens when two doctors meet on a social networking site? Fall in love, of course. Anand Vakharia, family physician, and Ruchi Amin, surgery resident, met on Facebook. They met in person for the first time after four months of being Face-

book friends. Since that time, they have been inseparable. Anand’s cousin Sachin and his wife Crystal visited them in Milwaukee for the weekend. With their help, Anand meticulously planned the proposal. Sanchin and Crystal told the couple that a friend was having a party at the Boerner Botanical Gardens and wanted to take them along as their guests. The outdoor proposal was romantic with a violinist playing near the pond with a waterfall. Ruchi realized that Sachin and Crystal who had been walking with them were no longer in sight! Anand then got down on one knee and proposed, but was so nervous, he forgot to put the ring on Ruchi’s finger. When she said yes, all her friends and family hiding around the trees jumped out to congratulate them.

The couple wanted a semi-destination wedding that would suit their friends and family.

Anand and Ruchi hired wedding planner Signature Events to plan all the events. The couple was also hands-on in planning the details and securing vendors. They wanted a semi-destination wedding that would suit their friends and family. Since Anand is from Ft. Lauderdale and Ruchi from Rochester, so they chose Hyatt Grand Cypress, Orlando. Given the wedding was planned for Thanksgiving weekend 2017, they thought it would also be the perfect vacation for guests. 24

The pre-wedding functions included Sangeet/Mehendi and Garba. The garba night decor included a Ganesh floral swing centerpiece with hanging ceiling draping and cabanas. Music was a live band, Ritesh from Medley Entertainment, NJ. The morning wedding was held outdoors at Wingsong Greens with 350 guests. The wedding’s theme was coral, pink, green, and yellow with peacock themed fans, having personalized ceremony details. Unique aspects of the wedding were a floral aisle scroll, rotating stage where bride and groom ex-

changed garlands, and a sky air banner congratulating the couple. The groom even made a rocking entry via speedboat during the baraat that traveled along the waterfront to the golf course. The reception was done in a royal blue, coral, ivory, and rosegold theme. The stage had an intricate draped backdrop, and the centerpieces were hanging and floating candles, elephants/ circle geometric accents. The dance floor was decorated with a large floral, crystal chandelier with a monogram.

Ruchi’s advice to couples planning their wedding is to start early to be able to share the special day with friends and family.

The couple made sure each seat had hand-folded paan, escort cards consisted of a cookie box with a bride and groom frosted cookies. Besides, there was a Waterford vase ice sculpture with initials engraved, fruit carvings with Ruchi and Anand engraved on it. One incredible

reception moment was when the bride-groom entered to a self-written rap about their love story. R u c h i ’s a d v i c e t o c o u p l e s planning their wedding is to start early to be able to share the special day with friends and family.

Imagine saying “yes” to your soulmate mid-air on a hot air balloon. Top-of-the-world, right! Vinoth Kumar Thirunavukkarasu, a systems engineer and Jessica Jackson, a genetic counselor, did just that in Treasure Island, Florida. Vinoth from Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, moved to Jacksonville for a new job in 2008. Jessica from Indiana also settled in the city for her first job in 2014. The duo met through a social volleyball group and hit it off immediately. The couple’s friends saw the chemistry between the two and set them up. Vinoth was hesitant, but they arranged a group outing and left him alone with Jessica. He finally found the courage to ask Jessica for their first official date – it was a night on the beach watching the full moon, followed by dinner. The couple later got engaged on a hot air balloon with seven tourists and celebrated with mimosas. Jessica was scared lest she drop the diamond ring!

Congratulations on Getting Married! S

o now that you have made a down payment on your house… oh wait… what… I see... that was the final check for your wedding!

Weddings are costly, yes. But now let’s focus on something less fun. There are a few checklist items to consider as you start your happily married life. 62

No matter the date you got married in the tax year, you n eed t o f i l e “ M a r r i ed F i l i n g Jointly” or “Married Filing Separately”. Which one is better? It depends on your situation and your tax accountant can give you a comparison once the information is in the draft return. Most of the time, “Married Filing Jointly” is favorable.

hold for you. You want to make sure you’re not taking too much or too little out of your paycheck (withholding is the government’s way of prepaying your taxes). Understand your work fringe benefits. Who is getting insurance through work? Who has the best medical plan while being cost effective? Do both of you have retirement accounts through work? Do you need to open a retirement plan outside of work?

Before you start organizing your wedding gifts, make sure you organize your financial paperwork. Lay out your assets and liabilities. Know and understand the terms of what each of you have - student loans, mortgage, credit card debt, etc.

Whether you are a modern or traditional couple, if one of you legally changes your name, fix your social security card before you file your taxes. The tax return must match the name and number of your social security information, otherwise it can delay the processing of your return and your refund. You can make the change on this website: https://w w w.ssa.gov/forms/ ss-5.pdf

Know and understand the terms of what each of you have - student loans, mortgage, credit card debt, etc. Possibly put together a new family budget and a joint bank account. Tips for Planning a Successful Fusion Wedding

F

usion weddings can be difficult to plan with different religious and cultural backgrounds and to add to it different customs. You may want to plan a beautiful fusion wedding by giving a nod to both your cultures.

At Desh-Videsh we have listed our top 10 tips to make the planning process less cumbersome and help you pull off a fabulous and successful fusion wedding.

Incorporate details from each of your cultural traditions like food and music. 76

Communicate: Communicate openly with your fiancé, with both sides of the family. Discuss which traditions they would like to incorporate. Avoid faux-pas: Educate each of your families on what would be considered inappropriate behavior in the other’s community.

Hire a wedding planner familiar with multicultural weddings: Finding a wedding planner who’s familiar with your ceremonies will help take the weight off your shoulders on such a busy day. Pick the right venue: Pick a venue that will accommodate your wedding, and know the rules.

MARCH 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Personalize your invitations: In the invitations be creative, show how you’ll incorporate both backgrounds into your special day. Include fun elements about both cultures -- favorite recipe, region, etc. Create a ceremony program for guests: Your guests may not be aware of the customs you’re including. Design a ceremony program to keep your loved ones informed about important traditions.

Wear outfits from both cultures: Give a nod to both the cultures by wearing outfits from your as well as your partner’s culture.

Engage both cultures: Incorporate details from each of your cultural tradition like food and music. Have fusion food from both backgrounds is a great way to make guests from both sides feel comfortable and explore a new cuisine. Include a playlist of songs from both cultures.

Hand out welcome bags: Gifts are always welcome. Include your favorite ethnic treats, trinkets and tokens from your heritage, for example, Indian bangles. Be yourself and showcase your style: Keep our unique style.

5 Signs of Low Self Worth and How It Could Be Affecting Your Love Life They say you can only love others as much as you love yourself, and as tired as that adage may be, the core of it rings quite true. Think about it: It can be hard enough understanding and accepting your own thoughts, feelings, words, and actions—let alone somebody else’s. But if loving and accepting yourself—that is, having a strong sense of self-worth—directly influences the health of your intimate relationships, is it possible to learn how to recognize when that influence is negative? Consider the following five clues:

1

3

You hold grudges and resentment.

We tend to judge others most harshly for the things we are judging ourselves about first. So when your partner “pushes your buttons,” you may fail to see it as a growth opportunity if your shaky self-worth prevents you from taking ownership of your feelings.

You don’t speak up for yourself.

This includes both small scale and large scale selfcensorship. Mum’s the word...as long as you can avoid conflict and reduce the risk of being rejected, right? (But of course, this is never guaranteed anyway.)

2

You don’t set (and stick to) healthy boundaries.

You know what you are and aren’t comfortable with (in everything from sharing finances to sharing secrets), but it’s hard to stay true to you if your sense of self is more concerned about appeasing someone else. 102

4

You don’t feel comfortable being alone.

While sharing mutual love and support with a partner can be a priority, it doesn’t take away from the importance of being able to genuinely enjoy your own company. “All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.” -Blaise Pascal, 17th century French mathematician and physicist

5

You stay in a relationship even if you know it’s not right for you.

If you don’t feel whole and complete as you are, then you may be more willing to tolerate unsatisfying, unpleasant, or even abusive behavior from another person.

Start Building Your Self-Worth—And Start Building Better Relationships, Too A healthy sense of self-worth allows you to adopt, celebrate, and take root in the belief that you are inherently deserving of what life has to offer. When it comes to relationships in particular, loving and accepting yourself for who you are prevents you from “needing” validation from a romantic partner (or any other external source, for that matter). Why? Because you’re already able to validate your worthiness from within—something which, unlike other people, is actually under your control. In this way, all the love, acceptance, and approval you receive from your partner become gifts to be enjoyed, not necessities to be depended on (the 104

apparent loss of which can be distressing). In the meantime, your growing sense of self-worth almost immediately helps you free up a lot of emotional and mental energy that can be invested right back into the relationship itself. So this year, for the sake of you and your loved ones, be kinder to you: • Speak your mind. • Be polite, but be honest. • Instead of judging your emotions, allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling, then simply let it go when you’re done. • Learn to enjoy your own company. • Do things that are personally meaningful. • Help others. • Nourish and move your body. • Let go of what is no longer serving you. • And above all: know that by practicing selfcare, you are giving a gift of love to both yourself and your partner.
