MARCH 2021 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Edito r’s View Dear Readers, Spring is my most favorite season of the year. Not because it is the season for rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and regrowth nor is it because it is the favorite season of 36% of Americans (per Gallup poll results). It is not even because spring brings the best weather in Florida. But really, it is my favorite season because my birthday is in the Spring! Enough about me, let’s discuss the rebirth that happens when couples marry and begin a new journey in life together! As you probably guessed, this month’s Desh-Videsh is a wedding resources issue. Every four months, it brings me joy and excitement to talk about newlyweds because weddings bring two soul mates and two families together. Usually I quote something from Hindu scripture when we talk about weddings, but today let me share a quote from a Christian scripture, 1 Corinthians 13.4-7 for newlyweds who are in love with each other or give commitment to love each other for the rest of their life. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Similarly 1. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 reminds us “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.” If you think about it, these messages are no different than the Saptapadi taken from Hindu scripture. These are universal messages to love, respect and support each other. And these universal messages are not limited to only newlyweds, they are for everyone, and they are even more important as we begin to recover from the horrible COVID-19 pandemic. Let me come back to the current wedding issue before somebody recruits me for a preacher position! In this issue, we feature six real weddings including the wedding of Varun Dhavan, one of Bollywood’s hottest heroes. I am so excited to share these stories, especially since some of you took a bold step and got married during the pandemic while following CDC guidelines. On behalf of the entire team at Desh-Videsh Media Group, I would like to congratulate you all! This issue also features floral decor by Nikun Events in our Must Have Photo Moments section. And as I said earlier about the universal message of love, flowers are universal symbols of a new beginning, beauty, joy, prosperity and auspicious blessings of love, regardless of religion or country. As you know, we publish wedding issues for two reasons: one to congratulate newlyweds by covering their love story along with their beautiful pictures; and two, to give ideas and inspiration to the couples who are planning their weddings in the near future. In talking with our wedding vendors who will be a part of MyShadi Bridal Expo in Orlando on May 23, 2021 at the Hilton Orlando, we are finding out that a record number of couples are planning weddings in 2021 and early 2022. Similarly a record number of couples are registering to attend this bridal show. So if you are a wedding professional and you have not reserved a booth or an advertisement in our Bridal Expo Wedding Resource Guide, please visit www.myshadibridalexpo.com for an opportunity to reach hundreds of brides, grooms and their families. If you or your loved one is getting married, please visit www.myshadibridalexpo.com to register to attend and avoid long lines on the day of the show. Until then, be safe and be well! eghavi Parekh and Ketul Shah’s love story is one that is full of surprises and romantic gestures. Though the two both lived in Parsippany, New Jersey, they first met during a video conference with mutual friends in 2011. Recognizing a special connection at that virtual meeting, Ketul instantly sent a Facebook friend request to Meghavi that she accepted. The virtual friendship led to a real life one when the two started meeting in person. Meghavi and Ketul began dating in earnest in September of 2012. After dating for five years, Ketul proposed and Meghavi happily accepted! Meghavi was overwhelmed by the way Ketul proposed, which took place in phases. First, the couple went on a sunset helicopter trip of New York and witnessed the mesmerizing sights together. The next weekend was the eventful one. Ketul sent a surprise package to Meghavi, a box on which “I love you” was written in 10 different languages. There was a beautiful red dress in it with a note to be ready by 12:30pm. The blushing Meghavi dressed in red went on a lunch date with her true love. Just after lunch, Ketul hurried to a ferry ride in New York. Just when they reached the pier, Meghavi was awestruck to find all their close friends carrying a banner that read “Baku (my dear) will you marry me?.” Meghavi was sincerely touched by Ketul’s romantic gesture and the presence of friends during the great moment of her life. The couple decided to marry in May 2019. Meghavi and Ketul did not want a wedding planner, and instead, they decided to plan the details themselves with the help of their family and close friends. The couple wanted to enjoy every bit of the planning, and according to Meghavi, it was a huge task, but the process and the successful execution of the plans made them truly content.
They chose a venue close to Parsippany as both families and their friends lived nearby. Just like their personal chemistry, the choice of venue also stroked a chord of unity and romanticism together. During their search for the perfect venue, Meghavi and Ketul visited The Mansion at Mountain Lakes and were overwhelmed by its rustic elegance. The two agreed that it was the perfect location for their dream marriage. Friends and family offered references for different vendors, and the couple they met with them personally. Impressed by their genuine wishes to plan everything themselves, the vendors extended exceptional cooperation in all aspects of planning. Before tying the knot, the couple visited India to shop and for a pre-wedding shoot. Finally, the big day arrived. Three pre-wedding ceremonies - the Kickoff Party, Mehndi and Pithi - were celebrated at home. The Kickoff Party and Mehndi were celebrated together, while the Pithi took place at the bride and groom’s respective homes. Meghavi is a henna artist herself, so she designed her own mehndi. Her henna artist fulfilled her expectations more than perfectly. The pithi jewelry was handmade by

Meghavi’s aunt, who also made floral jhumkas and veils for the same event. At the Mehndi, a swing was decorated with floral veils. It was an intimate ceremony with the participation of the family members along with touches of love everywhere. The wedding ceremony was in the morning and inside the venue. The couple loved the venue so much that the decor was simply meant to complement the existing ambiance and grace of the room. The mandap was draped with pink fabric with a chandelier in the center and a floral hedge with white hydrangea and pink and peach roses adorned the top. Ketul arrived on a horse carriage to the festive occasion. Hit dance numbers were played for the baraat, and during the marriage ceremony, the music choice was traditional Shehnai and Gujarati Lagan geet to fully embrace culture and heritage. The reception continued with the simple, yet elegant theme. The couple’s love for white hydrangea and pink and peach roses continued here too with the stage centrepieces made of these flowers. There was beautiful silk fabric draping for the backdrop adding to the romantic ambience perfectly. The centrepieces of the guests’ tables included silver crystal
goblets with votive candles inside and pink rose petals around the base. A fog machine was used for the first dance number to create a surreal feeling of dancing on the clouds. Songs included the title track from film Dhadak and “Ek Ladki ko Dekha to Aisa Laga.” The 250 guests partied along with the bride and groom into the night as top dance numbers along and remixes played throughout the reception. The reception featured dance recitals by the family and friends. There were even three surprise performances from the groom, his family and the bride’s family. It was indeed a pleasant surprise for Meghavi and the other guests. The couple was overwhelmed to see the beautiful decor at the reception and happily thank the decorators for bringing their ideas to life. Simple but elegant was what Meghavi and Ketul hoped for their wedding, and they were happy it came about through their planning. Cherishing the beautiful and happy memories of their wedding, the couple advises everyone not to get too stressed or occupied by the planning process. There is stress, but couples’ should not forget to enjoy the fun of beginning a new journey in life.

The trip was nearly cancelled due to an active volcanic eruption, but Robert quickly changed locations to visit Kona. Such was his determination to propose to the love of his life. The beautiful beach and sand cliffs in Kona made for a picturesque backdrop when Robert proposed to Pooja. The proposal, made amidst exquisite natural beauty overlooking the manta rays, was one Pooja could not refuse judging by her enthusiastic yes! Pooja and Robert celebrated their engagement with long walks along black sand beaches, snorkelling with sea turtles and watching the sunset from the top of Mauna Kea with vows of a new beginning. To top it off, the two enjoyed delicious food and even got to see the lava. The couple married on September 14, 2019 . The wedding was a celebration of two cultures and the couple chose to

hire wedding planner Keisha Scott of K.Scott Weddings to ensure the wedding was organized, hasslefree, and truly reflected both their backgrounds. Pooja and Robert wanted to be sure their 450 guests enjoyed the festivities. Due to the size of their guest list, desire for restaurant catering, and the fact that September is wedding season, the couple compromised and split the events at different venues. Since both families live in Raleigh, Pooja and Robert chose The Sutherland in Wake Forest as their wedding venue and the Raleigh Marriott City Center as the site of their reception. The festivities began with a Mehndi/Sangeet celebration decorated in bold Moroccan style and colors. Pooja’s love for flowers united the two mothers, who both toured the local farm from where the centerpieces would be selected. The event was informal and fun with newlywed games, chaat food stations, and a s’mores bar that was built by Robert’s father. Pooja, a romantic at heart, took her love for florals one step further with a garden-style outdoor wedding. In order to celebrate the couple’s joint

cultures, there was a synchronization of Hindu and Christian weddings. The wedding planner worked wonders and it was a perfect union of two cultures. Robert arrived at the wedding riding on a white horse, dressed in a traditional Indian Sherwani. The baarat was a joyous start to the ceremony with a musical extravaganza that was a blend of 90s-2000s hip hop and Desi hits, specially selected by the groom himself. The reception continued with the garden theme with an extra touch of glamour and elegance. The decorator and wedding planner added touches of gold, sparkle, peacock feathers, a garden wall, globos, and even ice sculptures to give the final festival a glamorous spark. The party went on with a perfect blend of both Bollywood and western hits. Pooj and her father danced to “Ninnantha Appa Illa” from the film Devatha Manushya, while Robert and his mother danced to Stevie Wonder’s “You are the Sunshine of My Life.” The couple was so shocked to learn that friends and family secretly
practiced a dance for weeks leading up to the wedding. Pooja and Robert were so touched with everyone’s enthusiasm and it was one of their most memorable moments. With unique and personal touches from the marriage vows to the customized welcome bags, Pooja and Robert’s personalities shone through all the details. The customized welcome bags for out-of-town guests included snacks, but also a monogrammed travel toothbrush courtesy of the dentist bride! One thing Pooja laughs about now is that her father forgot the wedding garlands. He called his friend to pick them up from the temple at 7 am, and Pooja remained blissfully unaware of the snafu. Now, they all laugh at it, but she is glad that she did not know about it as it would have definitely made her nervous! Pooja’s advice to would-be couples is to hire a wedding planner and photographer well in advance to remain stress-free through the process.

klima and Mark’s wedding shone with vibrant green and gave off true organic vibes as a memorable beginning to the rest of their life together. The Covid pandemic forced the couple to reschedule their original wedding four times. The couple finally decided to plan an intimate ceremony in the backyard garden of their home in Orlando, Florida, in presence of close friends and family. Aklima first met when she interviewed for a job at the airport. For five years, the two worked together, and though he was a tough boss, Aklima appreciated Mark’s mentorship. She eventually moved on to a different job, but they kept in touch over coffee and drinks. By 2018, their mentorship became much more and they officially began dating. Mark planned a romantic proposal as a surprise during an Eid family dinner. On the auspicious day of Eid, he presented Aklima with a bouquet of red roses and led her to a seat at the end of a red carpet by the pool. Mark got down on one knee and proposed to her in front of her entire family. Overtaken with emotion and the romantic gesture, Aklima said “yes” with tears of joy in her eyes.
The wedding followed Covid guidelines and took place on November 7, 2020, with 25 guests in attendance. Being a natural planner and organizer, Aklima took on the task of planning on her own. Given their diverse backgrounds, the couple wanted the wedding celebration to be a fusion of their backgrounds and cultures. Though the original wedding was to take place at the Florida Hotel, the couple knew their backyard, a romantic oasis and place of relaxation, would be the perfect venue for their pandemic wedding. Dreams to Reality provided decor, and the result was rustic, organic ambiance in the lush garden by the pool and spa. The backyard was decorated with rustic ornaments and lighting to complement the garden. A white platform was built above the spa to serve as the Mandap/Altar. Though there were no pre-wedding festivities, Aklima was still able to plan a safe girl’s day with close friends, her mom, and aunt, at a spa complete with brunch. For the ceremony, Mark arrived to “She Believes in Me” by All 4 One, and Aklima walked out to “Everything I Need” by Skylar Grey. The backdrop and theme color

The reception struck a different tone. Aklima and Mark transformed their living room into a dance floor with a ceiling of string market lights to give guests the feeling of dancing under the stars. The couple’s first dance was to “I Do” by Aloe Blacc. Later, Aklima, who is also a trained dancer, surprised all with a Bollywood dance for her new
Despite the limited guests and the pandemic, Aklima and Mark’s wedding included many personal touches thanks to the bride’s innovative and creative ideas, which included custom made masks for the guests. A memorable “wow” moment was when Mark saw Aklima in her wedding gown and she first saw her groom. After so much stress with the pandemic, rescheduling and cancellation of wedding plans, their bond remained as strong as ever. It was a beautiful moment when they stood together against all odds and finally tied the knot. Aklima advice to couples planning is to be frank and open with each other about your plans and aspirations regarding marriage. Despite their tensions and disappointments regarding wedding plans, cancellations, and the pandemic, the couple stood by one another as a rock solid support system and will always have fond memories of their luscious backyard wedding.

or Puja Solanki and Raj Gone, the airport is a magical place. Their story begins with a chance encounter at Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD), where the two were flying through on the way back to Florida from India. Raj noticed Puja was wearing a USF sweatshirt, the university both attended at the time. They struck up a conversation that lasted the entire layover, and as they say, the rest is history! In honor of their first meeting, Raj decided to propose to Puja in the spot where they met - at Chicago O’Hare! Despite Puja’s questions as to where they were going, and Raj’s nervousness about the weather delays, it all worked out in the end and Puja said yes! The couple flew back to Tampa, where they were able to celebrate with family and friends. Flying high in colors of love, Puja Solanki, a Physician and Raj Gona, a Tech Consultant decided to tie the knot on 27 December 2020. Puja and Raj really wanted to hold a destination wedding, but Covid changed their plans. Due to the pandemic, the couple decided to host a wedding and reception at the Hyatt Place in their hometown, Wesley Chapel, Florida. The

couple planned many details of their wedding but relied on wedding coordinator Big Guava Events to organize logistics and details during the wedding. As part of the pre-wedding ceremonies, Raj had Mangal Snanam and Puja had a Mehndi, Ganesh Puja and Pithi/Haldi. Both ceremonies were attended by only close family members and friends. The night before the wedding featured traditional Garba dancing with colorful floral

The reception theme featured a classic and elegant look with white and gold. Florals complemented the ambiance perfectly and were in the centerpieces as well as part of the backdrop wall. The backdrop also included candles with a custom, homemade P and R in light up marquee letters. One unique touch was a caricature painting of Puja and Raj posing as the iconic Raj and Simran from a famous Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge poster.
The reception had the guests dancing to a mix of top hits as well as Hindi and Telugu songs. The first dance song was a blend of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” from Frankie Vallie and “Enna Sona” from OK Jaanu. The couple was touched by a surprise video of friends and family in India and around the United States who were not able to attend the wedding due to Covid restrictions. Given that the couple is easy going, they just went with the flow during the planning process. Puja had the usual bride nightmares of not being ready on time, but none actually came true. The couple advises those planning to be sure to spend some time with their partner not discussing the wedding! Enjoy this time together. Despite the pandemic, Puja and Raj’s wedding was a beautiful event shared by friends and family. Their love for each other overcame all even a pandemic.

S
hivani and Kunal discovered their compatibility from the beginning. The two met each other virtually through dating app, Dil Mil, and theirs was a long-distance relationship where the couple would connect further by vacationing together. Kunal’s love for dogs and the outdoors attracted Shivani so much that within a year she decided to move from South Carolina to Florida to be closer to Kunal and truly get to know him. Kunal proposed to Shivani in August 2019. Though his original plan was to propose during a weekend trip to visit his parents, Kunal came home from work one day and decided he could not wait. He got down on one knee ready to propose to the love of his life. Funnily, in his haste he forgot the ring! He ran to the other room to
get the ring, returned, and proposed again with the ring. Shivani thought he might be joking, but he was not. Already deeply in love, Shivani had only one answer: “Yes.” The couple decided to get married January 31, 2021, but though Shivani, Kunal, and their families always dreamed of a big, fat Indian wedding, but the Covid pandemic and restrictions meant a change in plans. Instead, they planned a simple wedding with only 15 guests and no reception. Given the two were nature lovers and lived on a preserve, Shivani and Kunal chose to host their wedding in their home’s backyard in Mims, Florida. The couple did their own wedding planning with the help of their families and the bride’s sister. The wedding ceremony was full of personal touches by Shivani’s parents,

who made sure every little detail was perfect. Her parents made customized chairs for the bride and groom and bought elephant statues and decorated them with jewels. These touches of affection and love from the parents made the wedding that much more special. Shivani and Kunal’s love for Indian traditions showed throughout the wedding. The groom entered to the beat of a dhol. They chose to play instrumental versions of their favorite 90s Bollywood hits during the ceremony. To ensure everyone could be a part of the wedding rituals and hear the meaningful words, the music was kept to a low volume. The mandap was decorated in burgundy, green, and white with touches of
gold and elephants placed all around. Not to be forgotten, the couple’s dog was even part of the first look photos looking dashing in custom Indian clothing! There were some lighthearted moments, like when the guests kept hitting their heads on the chandeliers.
Shivani was worried about having a wedding during a pandemic, and she was worried that the guests or even herself might get Covid. Despite the challenges, the couple enjoyed planning their own wedding. The couple’s advice is to get personally involved in each stage of planning to make the moments special. For those live streaming their
wedding, don’t forget that the video will catch everything that is said! Since there were just a few guests in attendance, it was important to the couple to focus on the photographs and videography to capture every beautiful moment. Shivani and Kunal’s wedding was a ceremony that beautifully captured the couple’s love and sense of belonging.

t is our pleasure to present inspiring and unique Indian wedding decorations using fresh flowers by Nikun Events. Flowers are symbols of a new beginning, beauty, joy, prosperity and auspicious blessings of love. and signify purity, protection and valour. Marigolds, widely used in Hindu rituals, represent the Sun, the source of energy and are also the flowers of prayer for Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, the perfect couple. The Mandap, four-pillar structure with a canopy, is the most sacred, fascinating, enthralling and attractive site of a wedding. This is where the wedding rituals take place. Both the pillars and canopy are intricately decorated with fresh flowers, and the reigning colors are red, orange and yellow. The reception is another event at Indian weddings where floral decor plays a significant role, specifically for the centerpieces and stage. The centerpiece can make a bold statement and define the overall theme of the wedding, while a stage decorated by fresh flowers makes the entire event come to life. Another widely used flower at Indian wewddings is fragrant rose petals. From a design or sprinkling down the aisle or as decor on a table or stage, rose petals add to the splendour and majesty of the event. Article sponsored by Nikun Events (www.nikunevents.com). wedding date. Finally, the two sealed their vows on January 24, 2021. The couple’s parents met and finalized the date. Pandemic restrictions and personal preferences made the wedding ceremony a very personal and intimate one with very few invitees from B-Town. The marriage ceremony represented a different side than the celebrity profile of Varun. Both the bride and groom wanted theirs to be a “Gharki Shaadi,” an intimate affair at home with few guests from both families and their closest friends. Celebrity wedding planner Shaadi Squad, well-known for organizing weddings for Anushka Sharma and Viraat Kohli as well as Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, also did the planning for this wedding. The Mansion House at Alibaug, a luxury resort famous for its local coastal cuisine, was the chosen venue. Both Natasha and Varun wanted a memorable wedding ceremony amidst nature with blessings and wishes from those who matter most to them.
Bollywood Wedding: Natasha Dalal and Varun Dhawan Natasha Dalal and Varun Dhawan are two childhood sweethearts that tied the knot in the hopes of growing old together while still staying young at heart. The couple grew up together as classmates and their deep bond made them the best of friends. Theirs was not a love at first sight. Rather, their love bloomed from friendship during a later phase of life when the two realized they were falling in love with each other. Early on, Natasha was like family to Varun, the blue-eyed boy of Bollywood, and he admits that she is the rock-solid support system behind him. They started dating

before Varun’s film career launched and with great success, fantastic reviews and a series of rumors about his affairs with heroines like Shraddha Kapoor and Disha Patani, Natasha remained lady love for him.
The couple opted for matching bridal wear in ivory white. Since Natasha is a fashion designer, she designed her own outfit, while the groom’s outfit was designed by Manish Malhotra. Celebrity guests included Karan Johar who launched Varun in Student of the Year, Manish Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Arjun Kapoor, Zoa Morani, and Shashank Khaitan among others.
Natasha, a fashion designer, studied fashion technology at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. After that, she launched her brand, Natasha Dalal Label, which specializes in bridal wear. Natasha prefers to remain out of the limelight. Though recently, her marriage with the superstar has moved the focus of the spotlight on her. In 2019, there were several rumors and speculations on the couple’s

Karan Johar choreographed Varun’s Sangeet ceremony. There was an elaborate menu of continental, Asian, Middle Eastern and Indian food for guests. The Mansion House along with Intercontinental Mumbai were the caterers. The couple chose to have a sunset wedding. “Humpty Sharma” made a unique entrance - rather than the traditional ‘ghodi’ (horse), he arrived on a quad bike to marry his “dulhaniya” (bride). He entered to the song “Heeriye Sehra Bandi Main Toh Aaya Re” from the film Salaam E-Ishqfor. At the wedding, there was a total ban on photography. However, after the marriage ceremony, the couple came out and posed for the paparazzi. Soon after the marriage, Varun shared a picture of the two of them on Instagram with the caption ‘Life long love just became official.’

Buy or Rent?
That’s A Great Question. By Supal Vora, Private Wealth Advisor
O
wning a home is an important life goal for many Americans. Yet buying a home is not always the best financial decision for everyone. In some life situations, renting is a more prudent choice.
If you or your loved ones are contemplating the buy-or-rent decision, consider these questions to inform your next move.
11. How
likely are you to stay in the community? Americans move far more frequently than they used to. If you won’t be staying put for long, renting is fiscally wise. Closing costs add up, whether you’re buying or selling, especially when you do so in quick succession. By contrast, renters typically only have to shell out a damage deposit, which generally can be recouped at the end of the rental agreement.
22. Are prices stable,
falling or rising in your area? Look at the trends in home values in your area to assess whether buying a house is a good investment. Consider the reputation of local schools and hospitals, planned development and other factors that affect resale value.
3. 3 Is all your rent going to waste? Rent paid
to a landlord can seem like a throwaway expense, because renters gain no equity in the arrangement. However, if the roof over your head is adequate and the cost is less than what you could adequately find in the housing market, you can get ahead of the game by investing the difference. A handful of states offer some type of rental tax credits. If applicable, factor this tax savings into your number crunching.
4. 4 Are you ready for the responsibilities of ownership? Some people love doing the work it takes to maintain a home. Others, not so much. It takes skills, willingness and time in your schedule to be your own handyman or gardener. But if you don’t care for the

their home equity as part of their retirement savings, yet the market crash of 2008 is one reminder that it’s risky to pour everything into your home and neglect other forms of saving. Economies can falter. Neighborhoods can change. Natural disasters can occur. And property taxes can go up, increasing the cost of home ownership.
Individual circumstances will dictate whether home ownership makes economic sense. A financial professional can help evaluate readiness to afford monthly mortgage payments and other expenses of home ownership, including the cost of home maintenance. Avoid rushing your decision to ensure your next step is a sound one.
