MARCH 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Edito r’s View Dear Readers, Last month, we celebrated Valentine’s Day—a holiday designed to commemorate love. Across America, people sent their significant others a token of their love. It might have been flowers or jewelry, chocolates, or perhaps a simple card. But some ask, why hold a celebration of love only on Feb. 14? Shouldn’t we celebrate and express “the greatest of all things” each and every day? So, at Desh-Videsh, we do not talk about commemorating love every month—but we do at least four months a year: March, June, September, and December. Yes—these four months are Desh-Videsh wedding issues which bring you wedding-love stories of newlyweds! In this issue, we bring you six such love stories. One of the weddings is the wedding of Bollywood celebrities Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal. I am sure all of you must have heard of this wedding. In our article, though, we bring you some details some of you may not know. And these details also include a complete list of their wedding vendors. These vendors are, of course, famous wedding vendors in India and may be very expensive. But you never know. Some of them are looking for exposure in the USA. So it does not hurt to check them out. Every month, we get several requests from couples who would like for us to cover their wedding. So, selecting only five to six weddings is not an easy task. Bride/Groom and their families are always asking us, “What does Desh-Videsh look for in weddings?” As I talked about celebrating love in the beginning of this column, we are definitely looking for a wedding which is full of romance … starting from how the boy meets the girl, to romantic proposals, to romantic vows. Next, we look for weddings where couples honor their religion and culture. And last but not least: great photography. So, considering these factors, we present to you five weddings in this issue. One of them is a fusion wedding with a Hindu ceremony followed by Christian ceremony; and another one is a Muslim Nikah. I talked about how honoring religion and culture is one of the criteria we use to pick a wedding story. Let me point out cultural uniqueness and the prominent importance of religion in the wedding of Daisy and Anup. One unique aspect is where the bride entered on a horse-drawn carriage with her two mamas and mamis. Usually only the groom comes on a horse or in a horse-drawn carriage; but in this wedding Daisy made the first-ever move and started this unique trend. Well done, Daisy!! Daisy did not stop there. She went on to add a unique cultural mix of Hindu wedding rituals. The bride added Holi into her Haldi for all the guests to enjoy as they partied. The other way Daisy featured religion prominently in her wedding is where she herself personally designed a special dupatta for her wedding. She had a ten-foot-long red dupatta with the seven vows (Satapadi) embroidered around the edges. Preeyal and Dishil’s wedding story is a perfect example of young Indian Americans adding cultural nuances to their wedding. Both of them were captains of their respective university Raas dance teams: Emory SaRaas and Florida GatoRaas. And they met at the Raas Competition. Sometimes, young Indian Americans or their parents do not realize the importance of incorporating our culture and religion in their children’s lives—not only to learn about our culture but also to meet your soulmate. Meeting your future partner at a Raas competition or at a Holi or Diwali celebration is completely different from meeting somebody at a bar. Before I end this month’s column, let me announce the date of our first 2022 Myshadi Bridal Expo. It will be held on May 15 2022 at the Hilton Orlando. Please check out more details in our advertisement on the back of this issue and in your email inbox. We will see you soon!! Raj Shah Managing Editor

Having met in an interuniversity Raas dance competition, Preeyal and Dishil eventually fell in love with each other. However, Dishil had to face two hurdles before he could propose to Preeyal. First, he decided to propose to her during the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC in March 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic upset his plans. The second time, during June 2020, Dishil wanted to propose in Orlando. This time, he became infected with COVID a week prior–and the plan was upset once again. It was the third attempt that finally became successful. Dishil proposed to Preeyal in July 2020 at the Lullwater Park in Atlanta, their favorite hangout place. They decided to tie the knot after a year and a few months. The date was fixed for December 18, 2021. Both the bride and the groom grew up in Florida. That is why they chose Orlando to get married because it lies in the center of the state and is a convenient place for people to get

The groom arrived on a horsedrawn carriage with his cousin. Upon meeting his family, Dishil got off the carriage and joined everyone in dancing. Dishil entered the wedding ceremony with Preeyal’s parents, and Preeyal entered with her four maternal uncles and a cousin. The couple did the pheras (or rounds) together, to traditional songs. floor surrounded by four estate tables for the duo’s close family members to enjoy. There was a beautiful first dance, father-daughter dance, mother-son dance, and a 20-minute surprise skit by the siblings of Preeyal and Dishil, describing their love story. In the end, there were surprise performances by both the bride and groom. All 475 guests thoroughly enjoyed the colorful and soulful evening. A bevy of flowers, colors, and blessings marked the beginning of the new journey of the two lovers.
Preeyal had the pre-wedding ceremonies of Mehndi and Vidhi in the hotel ballroom. (Only minimal decorations were added because the ballroom itself had spectacularly beautiful decorations–including majestic chandeliers.) Family members and close friends were present at these ceremonies. Dishil held the Vidhi ceremony at his home in West Palm Beach, Florida. The wedding ceremony was held inside a ballroom. A cherry blossom theme, which signifies rejuvenation and new beginnings, was chosen. Apart from that, Preeyal and Dishil wanted to recreate the Cherry Blossom Festival that they had missed due to COVID. The Mandap had sparkling clear pillars with pink and white flowers on top. There was a raised aisle that led to the Mandap, with arches decorated with flowers. The decoration created an effect of floating flowers.

Daisy and Anup met on the dating app Dil Mil. After dating her for a year, he proposed to her during a trip to Malibu. And then, the preparations for marriage began with great enthusiasm. Daisy had had a fascination with the idea of a wedding by the waterside. So, they chose Charlotte Harbor Conference Center at Punta Gorda, as it had a waterfront. They celebrated Pithi, Grah Shantak, and Sangeet among the prewedding rituals. Each ceremony had its own color theme and mood. Pithi had a color theme of pristine white, and it was followed by a splash of colors like the festival of Holi. Grah Shanti had the colors of marigold and fuchsia flowers. The happy couple celebrated Sangeet on New Year’s Eve. It was a totally fun fiesta, recreating an Indian street market. The following day, the wedding was held in the morning. It was a grand
outdoor ceremony featuring a whole host of unique and innovative ideas by Daisy. She came to the wedding venue in a horse-drawn carriage, together with her two maternal uncles and aunts. The wedding Mandap was given a floating touch, with acrylic pillars and hanging flowers on top and flowers spread on the floor. The bride gave touches of creativity to the bridesmaids’ dresses. The bridesmaids wore Indian-style jumpsuits designed by none other than Daisy! Everyone in the family, including the women, wore turbans or safa. The bride’s side wore emerald green safa, and the groom’s side wore navy blue safa. Daisy looked ethereally beautiful in a spectacular red lehenga, and Anup looked dashingly handsome in a beautiful hand-worked white sherwani with an emerald green dupatta and matching necklace. He

arrived in a blue Corvette. Daisy wore a 10-foot long red dupatta with the 7 vows (satapadi) embroidered around the edges. Baraat came with a flashy musical mix of dance numbers and party songs comparable to a blend of “Sajan Ji Ghar Aaye” and “Mehndi Laga Ke”. Other songs and mixes were played for the bride, groom, and others. The reception was a dreamy ceremony held at night. All the guests entered as two groups representing the bride and groom’s sides of the family. The centerpieces had white and blush flowers and a mix of candles. The head tables were canopy tables bedecked with hanging flowers and candles. The dance floor was overhung with leaves and wisteria flowers in white, pink, and purple colors. There was music, dancing, and a touch of romanticism and magic everywhere. All 500 guests thoroughly enjoyed the marriage ceremony of Daisy and Anup.

oth Faaez Khateeb and Shereen Hasan found their true soulmates—in each other. That was the reason there was no formal proposal. They dated for more than two years and decided to spend the rest of their lives holding each other’s hands. The marriage date was fixed for December 11, 2021. Both Faaez and Shereen (having been brought up in Chicago) decided to have a destination wedding in Florida. They chose Hilton Oceanfront Resort at Daytona Beach, Florida as their wedding and reception venue. They had a Haldi ceremony in the presence of close family members and some dear friends. The number of guests was restricted due to COVID norms. However, it was a happy and intimate reunion with close friends and family. The marriage ceremony was a perfect blend of American and Islamic culture. It was a beach wedding, held during the daytime. Sun and sea created a magical ambience ideal for a perfect wedding. by Bruno Mars. They were followed by the flower girl. Shereen walked down the aisle with her parents with the song “Nachdi Phira.” The Nikah ceremony took place under the aegis of the priest. He read the sermons in both Arabic and English. After the Nikah ceremony, the couple exchanged rings. Bollywood and English songs were played throughout the ceremony. Vidayi was marked by sparklers in the hands of the guests. There was a mocktail hour before the reception for everyone to have some extra fun. The reception was inside a banquet which was exquisitely decorated with pink and white flowers and candles along with hand-made centerpieces made by the bride and groom. The dance floor featured the initials of the bride and groom; and it was highlighted by lights. The cake matched the color theme, and all the guests were served cookies with the initials of the couple on them. In addition to the first dance and mother-son and father-daughter dances, there was a surprise performance by friends. Faeez and Shereen lit a sky lantern and it flew high to the heavens, signifying their celestially happy journey together. All 50 guests who witnessed this wonderful event cheered the happy couple and wished them well.

The wedding date was fixed for October 23, 2021, exactly a year after the proposal. Since both of them had grown up in Atlanta, GA, they chose the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North venue both for the marriage and for the reception. The Hindu wedding rituals were celebrated in the morning; and the evening featured a reception party and banquet. The pre-wedding ceremonies were a perfect blend of homely celebrations and flashy festivities. Haldi and Mehndi were organised at Arushi’s house. These intimate events (with only the bride and groom’s closest friends and family present) were beautiful and lively. The couple held the Sangeet ceremony at the Westin. The color
theme was light pink and hot pink (tinged with magical golden light from lanterns), and dazzling white and blush pink flowers as centrepieces matching with a blush pink stage. The bride and the groom, both experts in Bollywood dance, put up an excellent dance performance together. The stunning Mandap for the marriage was decorated with white and light pink flowers. Arushi was beautifully bedecked in red Lehenga and Akshay in traditional outfits. To make the sunny day look beautiful and to create a sharp contrast with the duo’s red dress and turban, the couple requested that their guests sport clothes of pastel shades.
Instead of recorded songs, there was a violin player who serenaded them with tunes as the bride, bridesmaids, and groomsmen entered. Akshay came on a white horse with Punjabi Bollywood music. There was a Dhol player also. The reception was a grand party where they entered with their favorite Bollywood songs. There were games, and the music was a fusion of Bollywood and American pop songs. Instead of asking their invitees to sign a guest book, the couple gave Polaroid cameras for everyone to take a selfie or a picture. All 200 guests had a great time. After the reception, Arushi and Akshay revisited the site of their marriage and walked down the aisle together as a married couple. It was a magic moment for the perfect couple who danced slowly to the song “Love Story” by Taylor Swift— sung by their guests.

here was something about Shivam that made Christine feel that he was the one—her ‘Mr Right’; her partner for life. They met in 2012 when they were both in college. However, it wasn’t until 2016— when both moved to New York City— that they started dating. After dating for three years, Shivam proposed to Christine while walking together on a pier along the Hudson River. They embarked on their new journey together in this romantic place. Both Christine and Shivam wanted a long engagement. The beautiful thing about their union was that both of them had enormous respect and love for each other’s culture, customs, and religion. That is why they wanted to have both Hindu and Christian wedding rituals followed at their wedding. During their lovefilled courtship, they fixed their marriage date on May 21, 2021. They organized everything in advance. Since the Hindu ceremony was scheduled for the morning, they booked the hotel Westin Governor Morris in Morristown, New Jersey so that the guests could rest and change for the Christian ceremony followed by a reception in the evening. The venue for the reception was set for Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park, just 10 minutes away from the venue for the wedding itself. The venues had originally been booked for January 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, and the wedding had to be postponed for over a year. In March 2020, they had to cut the guest list to half. As responsible citizens, Christine and Shivam insisted that all their guests be vaccinated before the marriage. Their initiative was successful—and more than 90% of the guests were vaccinated before the wedding.

the traditional Indian rituals of Vidhi and Pithi so much that she happily joined in celebrating these rituals. The Hindu wedding ceremony took place in the morning, in the open air. Nirali Décor created a wonderful Mandap with pink and white flowers. Christine has great admiration for the concept of baraat, and that is why she hired a three-wheel convertible Polaris Slingshot for her groom. Happy and ecstatic, Shivam danced with his parents. And at the end of the baraat, both Christine and Shivam surprised all 170 guests with some ‘flash-mob-style’ dances. Shivam’s sister helped the couple with the dance moves. The reception, too, was delightfully beautiful and utterly enjoyable. Spring flowers, a fog machine, and colored lights created the perfect ambience for a dreamy reception. “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys was their first dance song; and they entered by playing “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, a top favorite of both. Christine displayed framed pictures of her parents and grandparents as a mark of respect. Christine was mesmerized by the colorful traditions and rituals of the Indian wedding. For her, becoming a part of this rich cultural heritage was literally a dream come true. This respect became the foundation of their bonding for life.

Prepping for the Wedding the Ayurvedic Way by Chahna Tailor Gupta
H
appy March! Wedding season is upon us! For brides and grooms, this is that one day (or a week!) where the spotlight is on them. This auspicious and ceremonious time in their lives can also put pressure to feel confident on their big day. Having gone through the same myself recently, I can relate. Six months before my marriage, I began incorporating small Ayurvedic regimens into my day. These not only helped me deal with the stress, but also helped me look my best for the joyous occasion. Here are some things I added to my routine…
Teeth: In the morning and evening, I was oil pulling (gargling) with unrefined coconut oil, using neem, mint, or miswak toothpaste, and brushing my teeth with an Ayurvedic tooth powder. I always do tongue scraping anyway but this is a great routine to add - especially with a copper scraper!
Face: For my face, I started making homemade face packs with different ingredients. Sometimes I would just use the inside of a tomato. Other times I would use besan, turmeric, and some water. I also used a calcium bentonite clay mask mixed with apple cider vinegar once in a while. For a scrub, I would use sugar to exfoliate my face. I would make sure to wear sunscreen every day and moisturize
54
so that dry skin wouldn’t accumulate on my face. I would also use steam to open up my pores and allow a detox.
Skin: I started using Kevala’s 100% Unrefined Sesame Oil every day to give myself an oil massage, also known as abhyanga. This was a great way for me to relax as well as hydrate and moisturize my skin with clean ingredients. Because I am prone to dry skin, I did my abhyanga after my shower so that the oil could continue to keep my skin moisturized. For those of you that have more oily skin, doing an abhyanga before showering and leaving the oil on for 15 minutes is enough before you wash it off! This oil can also be used for oil pulling! Even before I was married, I was using Dr. Bronner’s soap. It is made of only clean ingredients. Even though it is a little drying, I prefer it because it balances out well with my abhyanga after!
Hair: To make sure that my hair was nice and healthy, I made sure to get a haircut that would cut out any dead hair and then maintain it by using leave-in conditioner after washing my hair and also putting oil in my hair before bed. Some really nice hair oils include amla oil, neem oil, and brahmi oil. This can help reduce heat in the scalp, keeping hair more healthy and less likely to fall out.
Herbs and Teas: Because I was noticing that I had a lot of heat in my body, I started taking a blood purifier, Manjishta, to help clean my blood - which also helped clean my skin. I am also prone to kidney stones, so just to avoid passing one on my wedding day (can you imagine how that would’ve been?!), I started taking Chandraprabhavati daily. Even though it is not a herb, I started taking Vitamin C chewables as well for immunity! Something that really causes an imbalance in digestion in Ayurveda is eating cold foods and drinking cold drinks. I am not a person that routinely eats or drinks cold things, but I started to introduce more tea into my life. Whether it was a simple chamomile or ginger tea, or an ayurvedic CCF tea, drinking warm/ hot fluids made me feel more relaxed on a daily basis and definitely helped my gut with digestion. Everyone’s regimen is different and some people don’t have one! It’s important that you find what works for you. At the end of the day, you will be married to your partner and that in itself is the most beautiful part of it all. For those of you getting married, I wish for you all of the blessings, happiness, and love that life can offer! Please note that Ayurveda relies heavily on understanding your unique natural composition first. Therefore, the above suggestions may not be suitable for everyone. If you’re interested in specific ideas for your dosha, please reach out to me!

This silence by both Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal about their relationship made everyone in Bollywood think up thousands of speculations, wondering … ‘Is it true?’ ‘Will it happen?’
Katrina and Vicky’s
Wedding She is the paragon of beauty; a superstar; and the central attraction of many films. He is a super-talented actor who started showing his talent and acting prowess from the early years of his acting career. They fell for each other and decided to tie the knot, but kept the media and their millions of fans out of this very intimate and personal decision. This silence by both Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal about their relationship made everyone in Bollywood think up thousands of speculations, wondering … ‘Is it true?’ ‘Will it happen?’ The buzz had been around for a long time. Probable dates; venues; plans – everything was being discussed. However, no confirmation came from the bride or the groom till

the crescendo culminated in crisis and the first pic was posted on the social media handles of the bride and groom. It was a fairytale wedding held on December 9, 2021 at Six Senses Fort Barwara in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan – a perfect destination for their regal wedding ceremony following the traditional Punjabi rituals of the Punjabi groom Vicky. The ceremony was held among the family members of the bride and groom along with a plethora of stars from Bollywood. Paparazzi and the media, however, were banned. Pictures were posted only after the marriage was solemnized. Katrina, being a British citizen, followed the Indian wedding rituals with the utmost dedication and solemnity. There were pre-wedding ceremonies of Mehndi and Haldi; and they held a full Punjabi wedding. However, they added personal and innovative touches to the ceremonies.
Katrina dressed in a multi-coloured lehenga for Mehndi; and both she and Vicky chose to wear white attire instead of yellow for Haldi. The lovebirds splashed Mehndi on each other, joined – with cheerful and energetic participation – by family members and friends. The chadar
was floral made of mogra and baby’s breath. Instead of being accompanied by her brothers, Katrina chose to enter the wedding venue with her six sisters, whom she termed her ‘pillars of strength’. It was a beautiful sight – and it was a great decision signifying women empowerment!

The couple exchanged platinum Tiffany Soleste engagement rings. Katrina was wearing a blue sapphire ring and Vicky a wedding band ring. She looked exquisitely beautiful in a red lehenga designed by Sabyasachi. It was made of handwoven matka silk with zardosi borders. The veil had a handmade kiran trim as a mark of respect, honoring the Punjabi traditions of the groom. Her jewelry consisted of gold, uncut diamond, pearl, and a mangalsutra – all designed by Sabyasachi. The handsome groom Vicky looked dashing in ivory-coloured embroidered sherwani and a tussar georgette shawl. He wore a silk tissue safa and necklace with emeralds and rose-cut diamonds. Just like a traditional Punjabi bride Katrina wore choodas and Kaleeras. The jaimala or exchange of garlands occurred among great fanfare and blessings. Celebrities poured in their best wishes on social media. It was a dreamy wedding of a beautiful couple. The new name of the couple is Vickat. They chose to keep it private and celebrate their special moment with close ones. The smiles of happiness and ecstasy showed the deep love for each other and the fulfillment of a cherished dream.

International Student (F-1) Visas and Employment:
A
t any given time, there are more than one million international students studying in the United States and the vast majority come to study in the U.S. on an F-1 visa. The typical international student attends an American college or university to complete a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD program. However, students can also apply for an F-1 visa to attend a U.S. primary school, secondary school, or even to complete a short-term English language program. While less common, there are two other student visa categories, the J-1 visitor exchange program and the M-1 for vocational student attending programs that are typically two years or less. Here are some common U.S. Immigration Law terms that are applicable to International Students: CPT: A job training program known as Curricular Practical Training where international students can work or volunteer during their course of study. F-1 Visa: A non-immigrant visa specifically for full-time international students in an academic program F-2 Visa: A non-immigrant visa reserved for spouses and minor dependent children of international students D/S: Duration of Status which is the authorized period of stay for an F-1 visa DSO: Designated School Official is the person who helps maintain the status of the academic and employment records of an international student I-9: Employment Eligibility Verification which verifies the identity and employment authorization of all individuals hired for employment in the United States OPT: A job training program Optional Practical Training in which a student can work pre- or post-completion for a period of up to 12 months SEVIS: An online database, Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, where the school and student both
62
must be enrolled, and student records are tracked and monitored SEVP: The Student and Exchange Visitor Program in which schools are approved and students are managed by the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security STEM: Classified programs of study in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics There are certain requirements to be granted an F-1 visa. The U.S. based program must lead to a degree, diploma, or a certificate. Additionally, the school must be both 1) SEVP approved and 2) enrolled in the SEVIS program. The student must already be proficient in English unless they are specifically enrolling in an English language course or program. Furthermore, the student has the burden to prove they have enough funds to support themselves while attending school. Fortunately, family resources back home or U.S. friends/relatives can be used as a source of funding. Most international students are unaware of the advantages and disadvantages of an F-1. Like most visas, the F-1 is a non-immigrant visa. At the U.S. Consulate interview, you must demonstrate the following: 1) why you need to study in the United States, 2) how you will be paying for your program including living expenses, 3) your plans to return to your home country at the completion of your studies and 4) further demonstrate your non-immigrant intent by clearly proving substantial ties to your home country. The F-1 visa can be denied if you do not satisfy any of these requirements to the satisfaction of the consular officer. A student visa is a multiple-entry visa. The international student can return home or go on an international vacation between semesters using their foreign passport and re-enter the United States on their F-1 visa as long as they have maintained their status. It is very important for an international student to not violate the terms and conditions of their visa. F-1 students, like anyone else on a non-immigrant visa, always need to always maintain their valid immigration status. Unlike most visas which have a specific date where their authorized period of stay expires, an F-1 visa has an authorized period of stay marked as “D/S”. If the student continues to be in their program in good standing, they can remain in the U.S. on their visa. Also, the spouse and minor dependent children of an international student can enter the U.S. on an F-2 visa. It is important to remember that spouses on F-2 visas are not work authorized and they can only remain in the United States for as long as their F-1 spouse maintains F-1 status. One of the most common questions I am asked is “how can I work on my visa”? While you cannot work on a B1 or B2 visitor visa, students on an F-1 can have authorized employment under certain conditions. Generally, you can work on campus for up to 20 hours per week in an approved work study program. While in school you may participate in job training programs known as CPT or OPT. However, most F-1 programs only allow one year (12 months) of a
MARCH 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
full-time job training program. To maximize and preserve your post-completion OPT, it is essential that you do not work more than 20 hours per week or more than one year in any CPT or pre-completion OPT. Additionally, your CPT or OPT must be directly related to your field of study and approved by your school’s DSO. Don’t forget, even if you are volunteering or working in an unpaid internship as your job training program, you must register your program and employer with your DSO. With an F-1 visa, as with any other visa application, both the USCIS and the U.S. Consulates are experiencing long delays and processing backlogs. It is important to apply early for both your F-1 visa along with any related work authorization. If you plan on graduating this summer and want to remain in the U.S. to work, you should start looking for employment and applying for OPT work authorization several months before completing your studies. You cannot remain in the U.S. more than 60 days after graduation without beginning an approved job training program or obtaining another immigration status. The F-1 visa is a wonderful tool, but it must be maintained, and your school’s DSO is they key figure in your academic career. It is important to always check with your Designated School Official (DSO) before you start any employment. U.S. employers are not always familiar with the terms and conditions of your visa, and you should not rely on their expertise or whether your specific employment is allowed. Not only could your F-1 status be jeopardized, but the employer could also get into trouble with their
own company’s I-9 compliance if you are working without proper employment authorization. If you have any further questions about your work or your employee’s legal work options, it is best to speak with an experienced immigration attorney. Maintaining F-1 status or any immigration status is extremely important especially if you plan on getting sponsored for long-term employment after graduation or applying for a green card in the future.
