MAY 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Edito r’s View Dear Readers, Let me take this opportunity to wish all our Muslim readers a Happy Ramadan. May this divine month bring you and your family together, multiply your happiness, and fill your life with peace and grace. Let me also congratulate our readers from Pakistan on getting a new prime minister after weeks of political turmoil. Imran Khan, a famous former cricketer-turned-politician and eventually elected as Prime minister of Pakistan, was overthrown. Because of his arrogance in dealing with the economic problems and handling of foreign policy in a similar fashion, Khan became Pakistan’s first prime minister and was removed from office by a vote of no confidence. The parliament members elected new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, younger brother of former three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Nawaz Sharif was removed from office and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Political instability and turmoil have hindered the progress of Pakistan ever since she got her independence. It is very disturbing if you look at the history of the Pakistan government. After 23 years of independence, in 1970, the first general election was held. There have been 19 prime ministers since independence, three governments were overthrown by military coups (1958,1977 and 1999), and the military has ruled the country for 32 years. No prime minister has ever completed his or her term in office. I sympathize with the people of Pakistan that they have not been able to make their mark on the world map because of this turmoil. Now let me talk about recently published reports from the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), where they have labeled India as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” and clubbed India with known terrorist countries like China and North Korea. USCIRF, under the influence of foreign-based organizations, labeled India as a “Country of Particular Concern” even before the PM Modi government. In this issue, Dr. Ramesh Rao, a Professor of Communications Studies at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia, has written a detailed article on the USCIRF report and its bias toward India. In this year’s report once again, they talk about the CAA, NRC, Article 370, and Article 35A. Desh-Videsh has published a few articles on these topics before. For some of you who may have missed our publications in the past, we are explaining these topics in brief in this issue again. In the last issue of Desh-Videsh, we talked about India’s foreign policy in the midst of the Russia - Ukraine crisis. In the article, we talked about the 1971 war between India and Pakistan, where the US sent its 7th Fleet to the Bay of Bengal. In this issue, we are publishing a review of a book by Dr. Nuran Nabi titled The Role of Nixon-Kissinger in the 1971 War. Dr. Nabi was a freedom fighter from his country Bangladesh. He is now living in NJ, USA, and has first-hand, detailed information about the war and how the Pakistan army raped Bangladeshi women and created atrocity toward the people of Bangladesh. After 50+ years, I can still feel the pain in Dr. Nabi’s voice. In this issue, it is our pleasure to share some good news-bad news about Sonal Shah. She was just selected as a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council. Shah has been in the forefront of several NGOs and presidential campaign advisory committees as well as president transition committees. That is good news! Now comes the bad news. Anti-India, anti-Hindu organizations that are lobbying against India to USCIRF are also lobbying to remove Shah from this position. The same organizations and the same people opposed Shah’s appointment in President Obama’s administration and the same people opposed Amit Jani when President Biden’s administration tried appointing him. For reference, we have listed these organizations in this issue. As we talked about in the last issue, this year BAPS organizations are celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. On behalf of the entire Desh-Videsh team, I want to congratulate the BAPS members. As a commitment to BAPS to publish one article every month, it is our pleasure to include in this issue, “Immortal Gurus: Selfless Love as Spiritual Relevance.“ Let me end my column by reminding you about the Myshadi Bridal Show. As you may have seen in our email, the Fort Lauderdale shows have been postponed because the Bonaventure Hotel is closing for renovation. We will announce a new date and venue very soon. Meanwhile, do not forget to check out our show in Orlando on May 15, 2022, at Hilton Orlando. After two years of being shut down, we have a record number of brides registering for this show. Do not forget to register or attend the show. See you in Orlando!! Until then.. Be Safe and Be Healthy!! Raj Shah Managing Editor

T
he United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which should have been shut down in 2016, was infused with funds by Congress to continue to provide employment to mediocrities and faceless bureaucrats and to offer a platform for nine politically compromised commissioners to preen and build their beltway network of influence. The USCIRF should be labeled an organization of particular concern as some have argued, and it is time for American taxpayers to stop this institutional affront to good political and human sense. The USCIRF website claims that “USCIRF’s nine commissioners are appointed by either the President or Congressional leaders of each political party, supported by a non-partisan professional staff.” We can only wonder how that staff is vetted for their non-partisanship, even as they pursue the partisan agendas of their politically appointed commissioners. The USCIRF claims to do a lot, but where is the measure to find out if anything they say or do has any purchase? Does what they do accomplish anything more than to serve the partisan interests of monopolist, supremacist, violent “faith” groups and their scheming, manipulative America-based influence seekers? The USCIRF has become another symbol of American interventionism in the affairs of sovereign states, and the fact that it has bipartisan support and is the brainchild of US legislators goes to show that our willingness to undermine sovereign states continues undiminished. We mock the United Nations, and even our own State Department, in these matters of human rights, religious freedom, etc., usurping the role of international organizations and donning for ourselves the garb of the world’s policeman, the world’s confessor, the world’s primary scold, bully, and the predominant if not the only intimidating, hectoring didact. This “panel,” which was created in 1998 by an Act of Congress to “advise the President, Congress, and the State Department on the plight of persecuted religious groups worldwide,” has once again made its voice heard. After two decades of trying, the panel has been on a threeyear binge demanding that India be labeled a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC). This year its commissioners, or shall we say, “religion commissars,” have had the gall to say in their annual report that “In 2021, religious freedom conditions in India significantly worsened.” But they offer no measure, no data, except a couple of handpicked, unverified, unverifiable, egregious examples where a Hindu or some Hindus were involved, and which made the global echo chamber rounds of Western media, the Al Jazeera, and the zillion Christian rags that subsist to “bear false witness” against other religious faiths.
MAY 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
Starting in 2014, USCIRF in its annual reports started using a distorted map of India They then claim that “During the year, the Indian government escalated its promotion and enforcement of policies—including those promoting a Hindu-nationalist agenda—that negatively affected Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, and other religious minorities.” So, what were these agendas? How did Dalits become a “religious minority”? What about the Sikhs and their heavily funded attempts by Canada, UK, and US to destabilize the Indian Government and bring life to a standstill in the state of Punjab and in Delhi this past year? The Commissars then assert that “The government continued to systemize its ideological vision of a Hindu state at both the national and state levels through the use of both existing and new laws and structural changes hostile to the country’s religious minorities.” If there are existing laws and the Constitution of India urges the executive and the legislature to follow certain rules, to
More importantly, the USCIRF annual dungthrowing exercise is mainly used to dent the country’s soft power and global image and made much use of by media inimical to certain groups, countries, or peoples, just like The New York Times, The Washington Post, or National Public Radio that are viscerally Hinduphobic. 17
What about Hindus being minorities in some states in India, and they being denied minority status, which would allow them to run their own educational institutions, without interference or onerous demands from the state, as “minorities” are offered in India, and the Hindu majority is denied? make laws within the ambit of the Constitution, how can they be used to “systemize the ideological vision of a Hindu state”? And what is that “Hindu state” that these Commissars are afraid of? Perhaps that this “Hindu state” denies its majority Hindus what is offered to the so-called minorities? For example, minorities in India are allowed control over their religious institutions, whereas it is the Indian state governments, many a time willfully anti-Hindu, as in the state of Andhra Pradesh now that are in control of Hindu temples and from which they drain vast sums of money to appease their “minorities” and to pander to “minority vote banks.” To this day, the Indian Central Government has not been able to, or has been unwilling to, bring changes in the law to ensure the handing of

Hindu temples back to Hindus to manage and take care of. According to Swami Venkataraman: The Indian Constitution confers extraordinary protections on minorities. But crucially, the equality promised under Articles 14 and 15 and the freedom to manage religious affairs under Articles 25(1) and 26 are abrogated for Hindus, and Hindus alone, in the matter of their temples by recourse to Article 25(2)(a). By considering temple finances a secular matter, the tentacles of the state are now deeply entrenched into purely religious matters such as conduct of puja and other rituals. So, if the DC based “religion commissars” think that the BJP-led government in Delhi is systemizing its “ideological

Or as R. Jagannathan points out, in India today, “in a complete perversion of this (Hindu) civilizational heritage, even yoga and the mere rerun of the hugely popular Ramayana and Mahabharata serials on Doordarshan are seen as an antithesis of secularism, an imposition by Hindutva ideologues,” and where India’s highest court “…delegitimize the practice of excluding women in the reproductive age from entering the (Hindu) shrine.” How can the commissars ignore these blatant assaults on Hindus in the one country that they can call their own? What about Hindus being minorities in some states in India, and they being denied minority status, which would allow them to run their own educational institutions, without interference or onerous demands from the state, as “minorities” are offered in India, and the Hindu majority is denied? The commissars are clueless. They are clueless about the twenty million or so Bangladesh Muslims who have

migrated illegally into India for both economic reasons and those being lured into the country to bulk up vote banks. They are clueless about the daily atrocities and crimes committed against Hindus by the so-called “minorities.” They are clueless about the Indian “National Commission for Minorities” and the “Ministry of Minority Affairs” that not only go to bat for the so-called minorities of India, but whose members also ensure the continuing disparities in favor of the minorities against the so-called Hindu majority. Yes, these commissars know, and they have “heard” of the horrors of religious persecution, especially of Christians and Muslims, whispered in their ears by paid mischief-makers masquerading as “interfaith leaders.” But we know what this annual macabre dance is all about: the leverage and the tools that will be offered to US lawmakers and the DC establishment to yank the chain of some countries, or to poke their fingers in the eyes of others they wish to bring to heel. The USCIRF list is used by global lobbying agencies to discourage investors from investing in the country concerned, but then business is business unless the US Government decides to sanction

some government for other geopolitical reasons. More importantly, the USCIRF annual dung-throwing exercise is mainly used to dent the country’s soft power and global image and made much use of by media inimical to certain groups, countries, or peoples, just like The New York Times, The Washington Post, or National Public Radio that are viscerally Hinduphobic. The 2022 report lists 15 countries of “particular concern” and another 12 as on their “special watch list.” Of these 27 countries, 4 are majority Christian (Azerbaijan, Eritrea, Nigeria, and Russia), 5 are communist (China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, and Nicaragua), 15 are majority Muslim (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Iran, Syria, Turkmenistan, Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Malaysia, Turkey, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan),
Having conquered the world, decimated populations, and destroyed cultures, faith members of these two monopolist, supremacist, and violent “world religions” now seek to carry out their religious writ through the media and global institutions as well as through the so-called “international religious freedom” and “interfaith” groups.

1 is majority Buddhist (Myanmar), and 1 is majority Hindu. Of the 193 UN member states, 119 states are majority Christian and 50 are majority Muslim.
Having conquered the world, decimated populations, and destroyed cultures, faith members of these two monopolist, supremacist, and violent “world religions” now seek to carry out their religious writ through the media and global institutions as well as through the socalled “international religious freedom” and “interfaith” groups. The fact that they lure into their fold Hindus and have them do their bidding is also obvious to those of us who closely follow the work done by the international religious freedom and interfaith groups, and look at the people who are nominated as USCIRF commissioners. One of the commissioners, Anurima Bhargava, by name a Hindu, and appointed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is just a “busybody” whose work in promoting “dignity and justice” or “equity and belonging” or addressing “harassment and discrimination” has assured herself a pathway to cushy DC positions of power and influence as well as padding her bank balance. We only wish she could have remained in Chicago, her hometown, and done something about the increasing violence in the windy city. Given the fractious nature of American politics, the continuing and powerful presence and influence of
22
religious groups, mostly Christian, but also increasingly Jewish and Muslim, in Washington, DC, and the American establishment’s firm belief in their own grand plans for the world, we will continue to see the support and funding for an institution like the USCIRF, and the daily pilgrimage that “faith leaders” and their representatives make to the USCIRF’s DC office. This author, too, has visited their offices a few times and understands the nature of the trap set by such institutions. If we don’t go complaining to them about the harm being done to us somewhere in the world, then we will miss the chance to be heard by them and maybe the chance to influence the manufacturing of their annual reports. So, we join the influential groups who do have the ear of the commissioners in this destructive practice. Interestingly, the only such “free speech,” “human rights,” and “religious freedom” promoting institutions are maintained and run by the US and by EU countries led by former colonialists. We wish that on the fine buildings they occupy and in the fat volumes they publish periodically, this slogan is permanently etched: “We robbed you of your wealth, your wellbeing, your sense of self, and we then set you free; but we will make sure that you will always be under our influence, and we will watch you become good, moral beings.”

This Spring Presents Sellers with a
Golden Opportunity By Marta Yecora
I
f you’re thinking of selling your house this year, timing is crucial. After all, you’ll want to balance getting the most out of the sale of your current home and making the best investment when you buy your next one.
If that’s the case, you should know that you may be able to get the best of both worlds today. Here are four reasons why this spring may be your golden window of opportunity:
24
MAY 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
“For homebuyers, we believe that borrowing costs will likely rise with the increase in mortgage rates....” 2. Your Equity Is Growing in Record Amounts. According to the most recent Homeowner Equity Insight report from CoreLogic, homeowners are sitting on record amounts of equity thanks to recent home price appreciation. The report finds that the average homeowner has gained $55,300 in equity over the past year. That much equity can open doors for you to make a move. If you’ve been holding off on selling because you’re worried about how rising prices will impact your next home search, rest assured your equity can help fuel your move. It may be just what you need to cover a large portion – if not all – of the down payment on your next home.
When that happens, it’ll cost you more to purchase your next home. That’s why it’s important to act now if you’re ready to sell. Work with a trusted advisor to kickstart the process so you can take key steps to making your next purchase before rates climb further.
4. Home Prices Are Climbing Too. Home

1. The Number of Homes on the Market Is Still Low. Today’s limited supply of houses for sale is putting sellers in the driver’s seat. There are far more buyers in the market today than there are homes available. That means purchasers are eagerly waiting for your house. Listing your house now makes it the center of attention. If you work with a real estate professional to price your house correctly, you can expect it to sell quickly and likely get multiple strong offers this season.

They targeted presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard and campaigned against her in different parts of the US intending to derail her election campaign. Kulkarni was appointed as the new Chief of External Affairs of Americorp under the Biden administration. Did you know there is an unusual school in an unusual place run by an unusual teacher? Rajesh Kumar is a shopkeeper by profession but spends hours every morning teaching around 80 children from the poorest of the poor in India’s capital, New Delhi. The 43 year old visited the construction of the Delhi transit station a few years ago and was disturbed by the realization that many children were spending their days playing at the site instead of attending school. When he questioned the parents working at the site, they all said there were no schools in the vicinity and no one cared. Consequently, Kumar’s open-air classroom was born – between pillars and beneath the tracks of the Delhi transit system, known as the Metro. Every few minutes a train passes above, the children unperturbed by its sound. There are no chairs or tables, and the children sit on rolls of polystyrene foam placed on the rubble. Three rectangular patches of wall are painted black and used as a blackboard. Anonymous donors have contributed cardigans, books, shoes, and stationery for the children, as their parents cannot afford them. One unnamed person sends a bag full of biscuits and fruit juice for the pupils every day – another incentive for the children to show up for their studies.

Did you know, unlike in Border (the movie), only two Indians died in the battle of Longewala? J.P Dutta’s epic war film based on the Indo-Pak War of ’71 showed how a brave 120man regiment of the Indian Army fought against a troop of 300-odd Pakistanis (including tanks) while defending Longewala against wave after wave of Pakistani troops. The truth is, they were much more badass. We lost only two soldiers in that battle.

Immortal Gurus: Selfless Love as Spiritual Relevance Yogi Trivedi
Columbia University
I
vory-tower religiosity is often mistaken for spiritual excellence. In actuality, the guru is venerated in Indic traditions because she or he bridges social, economic, cultural, geographic, linguistic, and political archipelagos. The guru’s relevance can be gauged by the selflessness, consistency, and equality of his love, not just for the divine but for all its creation. In 2016, the loss of one such guru, His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, gave me a chance to reflect on the spiritual relevance and excellence of gurus in the context of my own experiences as a scholar, journalist, and believer. My reflections matured via a journey through time and space while observing Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s final rites ceremony on August 17, 2016.
at the impatient child and resumed tending to the dietary needs of the senior monks and devotees. The boy was restless; he wanted his guru’s attention. Just as the guru was about to stand up, the boy entered the room with a disposable dish and glass. His hunger had overpowered his etiquette. He could feel the stern gaze of some of the sadhus and devotees. Before anyone could scold or usher the boy off, the guru called
him near and asked him what he was craving. The child shamelessly poked and prodded at the guru’s dish and hand-picked his meal. The guru poured the boy saffron milk. “Swamiji, is it warm?” The guru smiled at the boy and lowered his pinky finger into the glass of milk, replying, “Yes, son. The milk is just right. Now, take your time and enjoy; I am not going anywhere until you finish.” The guru gave to the boy without desiring
Sitting under the unforgiving sun in Sarangpur, Gujarat, my mind traveled back to a dimly lit hall in Atlanta, Georgia, where a fiveyear-old boy doted on Maharaj. The guru was having his breakfast hours before consecrating one of the first Hindu temples in Atlanta. He smiled

to gain. He simply loved. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s ability to bow and speak to a five-year-old boy’s mind and heart illustrates the heights of a guru’s spiritual relevance. The most difficult test of spiritual relevance is time. It is a test of one’s ability to remain stable and equipoised (stithaprajna) despite the dynamic nature of one’s object of love and attention. My mind wandered again from Sarangpur, this time to a small mud hut in a tribal village in eastern Gujarat that I had traveled to in 2010 for ethnographic research. The generous hospitality of a hand-to-mouth, but content family overwhelmed me. I questioned them about the source of their kindness. The mother replied, “Sir, our guru, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, has loved my husband, my father, and my son. He has helped manage our finances during droughts, address my husband’s drinking problems, and treat my child’s physical ailments. He

just keeps giving—three generations now.” The guru’s spirituality remains relevant since his selfless love never expires and, in turn, inspires service. Finally, the last marker of spiritual relevance is one’s ability to allow difference, and even accept dissent. Can one love and continue to love someone who questions and even defies one’s own teachings? A guru can. My mind again drifted, this time to a cool and uncharacteristically dry afternoon in Mumbai. The guru encouraged dialogue. “Tell me something that I do not know.” I answered. He smiled but pressed forward, “Tell me something that I do not want to hear, but I should know. What do your graduate studies on organized religion teach you about our community? Speak your mind. We may see differently, but a healthy difference is key to discussion and growth.” This magnanimity allowed Pramukh Swami Maharaj to connect with diverse individuals of
various religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. His ecumenical spirit of acceptance allowed him to pray for the redemption (moksha) of the terrorists who viciously attacked the

Selfless, constant love culminates into spirituality when it reaches far beyond a closes circle of allies and yes-men—when it accepts and engages with difference. My observations of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life are from seemingly distinct vantage points—as a scholar, a pedagogue, and one who has basked in his warmth and love. These lessons in spirituality manifest through his ability to acknowledge

these different ‘Yogis’ and provide me the space to question, lose, and once again find my way—my faith—on the spiritual path. I was brought back to Sarangpur by the soft sobs of a few monks seated nearby. I suddenly felt the heat intensify and the breath in the air grey. After staring at the kindling pyre with moist eyes and a heavy heart, I scanned the crowd and observed that hundreds of thousands

were relearning something in that moment—a lesson in love, service, and acceptance. I realized that the guru was still giving. His message was as relevant as ever. The power of one’s spirituality depends on its relevance to humankind. The ability to love selflessly, consistently, and with an open mind—where love inspires service and reciprocation— differentiates the spiritual relevance and excellence of such gurus. It is what makes them immortal.

The Role of Nixon-Kissinger in the 1971 Pakistani War Crimes Against Bangladesh Dr. Nuran Nabi In 1972, Dr. Henry Kissinger, the National Security Adviser to then US President Richard Nixon, called Bangladesh a “basket with a hole.” Even more shocking was that President Nixon and Kissinger were silent when the Pakistani Army and their local collaborators killed three million people, raped thousands of Bengali women, and forced about ten million people to flee their homeland to take refuge in neighboring India. Neither President Nixon nor his administration or the US congress condemned the Pakistani military’s war crimes in Bangladesh; in fact, they didn’t take any initiative to stop it. The book The Role of NixonKissinger in the 1971 Pakistani War Crimes Against Bangladesh by Dr. Nuran Nabi details the role played by the USA, Soviet Union, China, India, and Pakistan during the Bangladesh Liberation War. The book reveals many previously unknown facts: the story of why Nixon and Kissinger opposed the independence of Bangladesh, why they did not condemn the war crimes of Pakistanis in Bangladesh, why they did not take any initiative to stop war crimes, why these two leaders got angry after receiving the famous

to learn of the news of the massacre. He sent the details of the genocide to the US State Department in two confidential telegrams known as “Selective Genocide” and “Blood Telegraph.” Nixon and Kissinger took these telegrams personally and viewed them as a challenge to openly oppose the government policy. The two leaders were so angry with Mr. Blood that they decided to transfer him from Dhaka overnight.
“Blood Telegram” from American Consul General in Dhaka. Nixon and Kissinger have opposed Bangladesh’s independence since the beginning of the Liberation War. They have shamelessly supported the war crimes of Pakistanis such as genocide, rape, and arson, creating refugee problems in Bangladesh. On the night of March 25, 1971, the Pakistani army launched a vicious attack on the unarmed Bengalis, starting genocide. US State Department Consul General Archer Blood based in Dhaka was shocked
However, on a positive note, the Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, personally worked for the independence of Bangladesh. In addition to the support of her government, she personally made whirlwind visits from one capital to another campaigning for the release of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, widely known as Bangabandhu, and the independence of Bangladesh. Apart from training the freedom fighters, India also helped with arms and ammunition and sheltered ten million refugees. Without India’s help and sympathy, millions of refugees would have died of starvation and disease. India recognizes the Provisional Government of Bangladesh, spreads the news of the

genocide of the Pakistani army in the Indian media, and informs the world about their misdeeds, rapes, and arsons. India actively strives to create world opinion in favor of Bangladesh’s independence. Prime Minister Gandhi met several world leaders including those from the Soviet Union, France, and the United Kingdom. All of them strongly condemned the genocide, rape, and deportation of Pakistanis and supported Bangladesh’s War of Independence. Unfortunately, all of the leaders except the Soviet Union heads were too cowardly to speak against the US. Prime Minister Gandhi’s attempt was unsuccessful because the US leaders had a vested interest. After the meeting with Prime Minister Gandhi, President Nixon denounced Gandhi to Kissinger in such vulgar language that it could not be published in print. The next day Kissinger told Nixon, “The Indians are bastards anyway.” Upon his return during a meeting of the National Security Council, Nixon continued his India bashing, noting, “The Indians are slippery, treacherous people.” The support and cooperation of Prime Minister Gandhi, the Government of India, and the people of India for Bangladesh was unparalleled. Bangladesh will forever remember the help of Gandhi and India with gratitude. On the other hand, the blind support of Nixon and Kissinger to General Yahya Khan, the Pakistani military ruler, served to establish a diplomatic relationship with China through secret mediation. These two leaders in power were more concerned with their desired ambitions. They had no sense of responsibility for the war crimes of the Pakistanis in Bangladesh. They

With the support of Nixon and Kissinger, Khan committed war crimes in Bangladesh. Bengalis were being killed especially with American weapons. The Nixon administration was secretly supplying American weapons to the Pakistani military, despite sanctions by the United States Congress. That was illegal and unjust.

Caught between the British and the American ships were the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, led by the 20,000-ton aircraft carrier, Vikrant, with barely 20 light fighter aircrafts. In this situation, India requested help from Moscow, under the security treaty. Frequently asked questions on OPT, STEM OPT and H-2B’s I am an international student on an F-1 visa and I am about to graduate from my University in May. How can I stay in the US and work? The most important piece of advice I give to all of my clients and potential clients is to “maintain your immigration status”. Your F-1 visa is only valid while you are enrolled in school or in an approved job training program. Once you graduate you have a 60-day grace period to 1) depart the United States, 2) enroll in another academic institution, 3) get a different visa, OR 4) start a postcompletion job training program. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a job training program that authorizes you to work for up to 12 months while you are still on your F-1 visa. This one-year OPT applies to all undergraduate and graduate fields of study. Remember, if you used up all or part of your 12 months of job training while in school, you may not be eligible for any post-completion
52
OPT. Additionally, your OPT must be sufficiently related to your field of study. For example, a student who studied performing arts should be able to work for a theater company. However, the same student would likely not be able to work for a real estate agency while on OPT. I run a U.S. based computer software company and I would like to hire an international student to work at my firm. Can I hire him? I would make sure the student is studying a computer related field and that the job training program is designed to fit the curriculum they studied or are studying. As long as the F-1 Optional Practical Training requirements are met they should be eligible to work for your business for up to 12 months of OPT. It is important to know that OPT can be used during school (pre-completion) or after graduation (post-completion). Can I hire an engineering graduate who will have already used up her 12 months of OPT?
Let’s briefly discuss STEM and why the STEM fields are so desirable for both students and employers. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Here is some more exciting news. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently expanded the STEM OPT program to include 22 new fields of study such as data science and financial analytics. If your potential F-1 OPT employee graduated from a U.S. college/university with a STEM degree, they can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension while still on their original F-1 visa. STEM graduates can essentially get up to 3 years of OPT. I am a U.S. business owner and I need to hire some foreign workers in the short term, what can I do? The H2B visa is a type of nonimmigrant visa that allows a U.S. employer to hire foreign employees only for temporary/seasonal jobs. Unlike H-2As, the H-2B is a nonagricultural visa. Many hotels, restaurants, construction companies, and other businesses hire workers on H-2B visas. Just like the H-1B visa, the H-2B requires a U.S. employer to petition for the visa on behalf of their candidate (employee) and obtain a labor certification. To qualify for H2B visa a U.S. employer must:1) show there is a shortage of available qualified U.S. workers. 2) prove that hiring the H-2B employee will not negatively affect the wages or working conditions of similarly situated U.S. workers. 3) demonstrate the need for foreign workers is “temporary”. Any of the following could be classified as “temporary”: 1. A one-time event or occurrence creates the need (e.g. a construction project or the opening/re-modeling of a new business).
MAY 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
2. The employer can demonstrate a seasonal need that is tied to a yearly event (e.g. a summer or winter tourist season). 3. If the employer can show it has not hired permanent employees to fulfill a specific job, the company can hire foreign workers on H-2Bs for intermittent needs. The U.S. employer remember that:

1. An H-2B visa doesn’t lead to a Green Card. 2. Employees from India and China are not eligible for H-2Bs. 3. There is a cap on H-2B visas just like H-1B visas. For more information on this article or to view additional pictures, please visit www.deshvidesh.com/May2022/ or download our Mobile App.

appy May and Happy Spring! The season of spring brings qualities of prithvi (earth) and jal/aap (water) elements such as wet, heavy, dense, soft, cloudy, cool, stable, dense, and solid. Environmental changes can affect our bodies in different ways. Some of us enjoy the excess moisture in the air and feel more down to earth, whereas others may present with allergies, mucus buildup, congestion, lethargy, fluid buildup, and sluggish digestion. According to Ayurveda, our health is determined by the state of our digestive system. Our digestive system is not only affected by what we eat, but also the environment, our lifestyle, and our state of mind. If we are anxious, stressed, depressed, angry, or any other type of emotion, our digestion may work differently than usual. If we live in a place that has certain
54
qualities, those qualities can affect our digestive power. We can utilize Ayurveda and yogic practices such as asana (poses), pranayama (breath work), and even dhyana (meditation) to bring some equilibrium to our lives and eliminate the effects of these unbalancing qualities.. If you feel like your digestive system is sluggish or in need of a jump start, Kapal bhati is a great technique to use. The passive inhale and active inhale helps to stimulate the belly and also gets us to sweat! If you are constipated or do not feel like you are completely eliminating everything in your bowels whenever you take a trip to the bathroom, you can use pawanmuktasana (wind releasing pose - which is appropriately named because many people do end up releasing wind in this pose!) to help move things along and help to clean your bowels out. You can get into this
pose by laying down on your back and bringing one or both knees to your chest. You can also start taking CCF tea (coriander, cumin, fennel) to help balance your gut. Since CCF tea is tridoshic (good for balancing vata, pitta, and kapha), it can be a good tea for many people’s digestive system. Triphala is also tridoshic so that can also help in stimulating a bowel movement. Triphala literally translates to ‘three fruits’, and is a mix of amla, bibhitaki, and haritaki. Each of the dried fruits is in charge of balancing one dosha, and altogether, is great for balancing the digestive system in cases of sluggishness. Of course, it is important to contact an Ayurvedic Practitioner (like me!) to make sure that these suggestions are appropriate for you. When I was in Rishikesh for yoga teacher training, the majority of the class was constipated for the first two weeks or so because of the time difference and intense schedule. It became our homework to take a teaspoon of triphala with warm water before bed. The second part of homework was to wake up, immediately get into malasana (garland pose), put a hand on each knee, and start to push one knee
MAY 2022 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
down and then the other (for ten repetitions on each side). When your knee comes back up, your thigh presses up against your bowels, stimulating them, and helps you to go to the bathroom. Trust me, the homework was very effective for all of us and it had to be. Because if we didn’t do it before class, then we would have definitely had to go during our 5:30am hatha yoga class because of some of the bowelstimulating poses we had to do! Spring is going to soon change into summer, and with that will come different environmental qualities that again may affect us and bring us off balance or maybe even make us feel really good! If you’re not sure how to keep yourself balanced during the season changes, schedule an in-person or virtual consultation and we can work together to find the best personalized plan for your wellness! Find some spring re-leaf and feel a-May-zing!

When India gained independence from the evil British Empire, the state of Jammu & Kashmir preferred to stay independent under Maharaja Hari Singh. The Indian Government cleared all of the Jammu and Kashmir area and following that, Mountbatten (then, Indian Governor General) and Maharaja Hari Singh, the ruler of the state decided to join hands with the state of India and signed the Instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947.

What is Triple talaq (instant divorce) in India? Under the Triple Talaq (instant divorce) provision, a Muslim man could legally divorce his wife by proclaiming three times consecutively the word talaq (the Arabic word for “divorce”) in spoken, written or, more recently, electronic form. In March 2017, over 1 million Indian Muslims, a majority of whom were women, signed a petition to end instant Triple Talaq. The petition was started by the Muslim Rashtriya Manch, an Islamic organization in India. The petitioners against instant Triple Talaq have given evidence showing how the act is simply an innovation that does not have much to do with Quranic beliefs. This is supported by the interpretation of Quranic text by many Islamic scholars, historical evidence, and legal precedent On May 13, 2017, during the hearings before its final judgment, the Supreme Court described instant Triple Talaq as the “worst form of marriage dissolution.” It noted that the custom is banned in the Muslimmajority countries of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Afghanistan, and Pakistan Bangladesh and Sri Lanka along with 23 other countries worldwide. The Quran established means to avoid hasty divorces. It prescribes two waiting periods of three months before the divorce is final in order to give the husband time to reconsider his decision. On August 22, 2017, the Indian Supreme Court deemed instant Triple Talaq (talaq-e-biddah) unconstitutional. On July 30, 2019, the Parliament of India declared the practice of Triple Talaq illegal and unconstitutional and made it a punishable act from August 1, 2019. Over the years, women organizations like Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan and several others

Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are not offered eligibility for citizenship under the new act. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are Muslim-majority countries that have modified their constitutions in recent decades to declare Islam their official state religion. Therefore, according to the Indian government, Muslims in these Islamic countries are “unlikely to face religious persecution.” The government says that Muslims cannot be “treated as persecuted minorities” in these Muslim-majority countries. The BBC says that while these countries have provisions in their constitutions guaranteeing non-Muslims rights, including the freedom to practice their religion, in practice, non-Muslim populations have experienced discrimination and persecution.

The
Kashmir Files, was not on the list of “big releases” of Bollywood, yet the small-budget film with
big human content became the biggest blockbuster of tinseltown. And now, the film is making its OTT debut on the platform Zee5. The date of release is yet to be declared. However, the poster for the film with the words “World Digital Premiere” is out, and it is expected to hit the platform soon. Apart from Hindi, the film will also be available in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada in the OTT. The Kashmir Files is based on the oppression the Kashmiri Pandits faced in the valley back in the 1990s. Their plight was narrated in a realistic way that appealed to the cross-section of Indian society, including high praise from the honorable Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The film includes Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, and others in the cast. Many state governments made the film tax-free, enabling the masses to watch it. Agnihotri has been overwhelmed by the positive response of the viewers to this film. He gratefully thanked them and expressed his hope that more people will get to know the truth about the Kashmiri Pandits. The intense and real-life content of the film became the key to its success at the box office. The small-budget film crossed 2500 million INR collections, which is a phenomenal feat in terms of business. People across India gave a standing ovation at the theaters and were filled with tears after watching the film. Now, the OTT release will afford viewers across the globe an opportunity to watch this extraordinary film.

Despite the high profiles of both the bride and the groom, the couple decided to do away with the concept of the “Big Fat Indian Wedding” opting instead for a simple wedding in the presence of their family and close friends. The marriage took place at Kapoor’s Pali Hill residence “Vastu.” The pre-wedding ceremonies of Mehndi and Haldi were also celebrated at “Vastu.”
According to Agnihotri, people should be told the truth in order to understand their history. History is not something of a narrative or politically-motivated record. History is concerned with the facts. Narrative history looks down upon India’s achievements and gives all the credit to western influence. In his opinion, the rulers of Delhi have always destroyed the entire nation. Through his film The Delhi Files, he will expose the real incidents and reveal the truth.
Kapoor and Bhatt dated for five years before getting married. Their marriage was anticipated this year, with several speculations about the date. However, both of them were tight-lipped about the exact day. It was only on the day prior that Kapoor’s mom Neetu Kapoor declared that the wedding would take place the day after. It was a simple and elegant ceremony where Neetu Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan, parents of Bhatt, and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and Shaheen Bhatt, the sisters of Kapoor and Bhatt, respectively, along with other members of Kapoor’s and Bhatt’s families were present. Kapoor’s late father Rishi Kapoor’s picture was placed at the wedding site. Bhatt’s friends, along with the couple’s close friends Karan Johar, Ayan Mukherjee, Ranbir’s cousins Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan with her husband Saif Ali Khan and their kids were also present.
Criticizing the Congress leaders of Punjab for creating violence in the state, Agnihotri said that first, they created the violence and then handled it in a ruthless manner, taking many innocent lives. He claimed to narrate this fact throughout his film and maintained that once people come to know the truth, they will raise their voices for justice. The producers of The Delhi Files are Abhishek Agarwal Arts and I am Buddha Production owned by Agnihotri. It will hit the silver screen in October 2022.
Bhatt looked radiant in her bridal outfit by Sabyasachi. It was an ivory organza sari with heritage jewelry designed by Sabyasachi. Ranbir, too, was a Sabyasachi groom with a matching embroidered silk sherwani. For Mehndi, Bhatt wore a magenta pink lehenga and a blouse while Ranbir donned a matching outfit - a pink kurta set by Sabyasachi. First photographs of the wedding were posted by Bhatt with an emotional note about their relationship and hopes of creating more memories in the days to come.
irector Vivek Agnihotri is now focusing his attention on his next project The Delhi Files. This film is based on the anti-Sikh riots and brutal killings of the Sikhs in 1984 after the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards. Thanking the viewers profusely for the success of The Kashmir Files, Vivek said that he will depict another dark incident while telling the truth about Tamil Nadu. Not only that, but the film will also contain episodes of Indian history from the Mughals to the British rule and the contemporary era.
