Dear Readers, Well, fall is approaching and busy celebrations continue. Diwali has just passed, but Thanksgiving and Christmas are around the corner. For many, this is a time of travel and a chance to plan longer get togethers. Road trips can seem daunting and stressful - the traffic, bored kids, and more are reasons why people often prefer air travel. In this issue, guest contributor Aditi Wardhan Singh shares the advantages of taking a family road trip. Her latest article includes tips from her most recent road trip with her kids. Her crew had a great time, and Singh makes it seem easy and fun! Along with actually getting there is the fun of packing. This issue, we rounded up some new carry-on luggage models that have useful and unique features. If you’re planning a trip to India this winter, check out our list of must-see temples. You all know this is something close to my heart, and the list is just a small sample of the many beautiful architectural and religious sights in India. If you visit any, let us know what you thought! As you know, we love hearing from you, so send us an email with any comments, article ideas, or feedback. You can email us at editor@deshvidesh.com or give us a call at (954) 784-8100. Before I sign off, I must offer special thanks to all the brides, grooms, and families who attended the Orlando MyShadi Bridal Expo. Aruna and I had a great time meeting with these young couples, and we wish them the best as they plan an important life occasion - their wedding! Of course, we also thank all of our vendors who participated without you, none of it is possible!

Tips To Make a Road Trip Easy And Memorable

By Aditi Wardhan Singh

“Will the kids sit for so long?” “It is going to be so hard with little kids.” Comments of disbelief poured in when we announced our cross country trip from Richmond to Denver to Chicago and back by car with our 6 - and 3 - year - old kids. But we persisted and what a wonderful trip it was! Above all, the impromptu trip taught us to connect as a family and just Be!

How did we manage to create these wonderful memories of a lifetime? The Itinerary was Kept an Exciting Suspense In essence, the discussion of the destination became an activity in itself. This had a two-pronged effect. One, they started looking at the map to figure out the place, and two, they got super excited when we told them about the next sights we would see.

We Did Not Prepare for Distractions Instead, every second or third stop we bought the kids treats, which served as both souvenirs and distractions. The car ride gets spent exploring new vistas with their new play things. 16

Breaks Only at Scenic Spots We took preemptive strikes against boredom! We took breaks every 4-6 hours, giving them a chance to stretch their legs. The kids loved exploring a lovely place even in the middle of nowhere. And who doesn’t love creating memories by posing in fabulous vistas?!

No Screen Time Means More Family Time Gadgets were used only when we needed to catch a nap or the kids got really antsy. Instead we did the below:

● Classic games like I Spy, License Plate, I’m Going on a Picnic, What Am I Thinking of.

● Try to work learning into road-trip games. I love making games up on the fly!

● Another favorite is making robots, letters

from items found on the table at restaurants.

Screen Time They Hadn’t Had Before We downloaded new movies/apps while on the road in places where we free wifi was available. Since our trip was for two weeks, we borrowed some CDs from the local library and Redbox, which were a pleasantly received surprise.

Making Friends Along The Way My kids and I love people watching and talking to strangers. Strangers are after all friends we haven’t met yet! Simple conversations lead to enriched experiences. Also, the kids learn to accept different people and their viewpoints. Remember to stay safe though.

1. Ensure little ones know not to talk about your home, routine life or destination.

2. Write the kids’ name, address and phone number and keep the information in their pockets.

3. We even took a few selfies with really fun people.

banned at home. A Happy Meal, a rare treat in our home, was a great way to appease them and get souvenir toys too.

Overnight Stays at Places With Pools/ Breakfast Any drive that threatened to be more than 8 hours, we stayed at a hotel at night. The kids had a blast frolicking in the pool and had a good night’s rest after. The morning breakfast gave them a great start to the day. Go ahead. Take an adventurous, memorable road trip made super easy and tantrum free ! Safe travels.

Rare Snacks This trip, I made sure to keep snacks they love, but haven’t had in a long time and have been 18

ACA Open Enrollment Season Is Here After a November 1 start, the window closes December 15. Provided by Rajesh Jyotishi This fall, the annual enrollment period to sign up for health insurance is shorter. In many states, it lasts only six weeks, from November 1 to December 15, and the federal government website link to health coverage, healthcare.gov, will be down for maintenance on many Sundays within that window of time.1 Eight states are extending the enrollment deadline at their health care exchanges: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Rhode Island, and Washington. The same goes for the District of Columbia. Take note of all this if you are shopping for health insurance.1

to see which plans include your preferred hospitals, doctors, and dentists. Many consumers just settle for being autoenrolled in their plans for another year – or if their current plan will be phased out, in what their state health care exchange deems a comparable plan. This auto-enrollment is convenient, but the results might disappoint you.

Be sure to compare plans. Plans do change from year to year, sometimes significantly. In 2018, your current plan might revise its terms of prescription drug coverage or its roster of physicians. That could affect you. Shop around 34

NOVEMBER 2017 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

If you are a high earner, you may want to look for coverage elsewhere. You may visit your state exchange or healthcare.gov and learn that you are ineligible for tax credits to offset the costs of health insurance premiums. If so, purchasing coverage in an off-exchange plan through an insurance company or insurance agent might be a good option.

Tax credits are still around, and Silver plans are still providing cost-sharing reductions. A family of four can earn up to $98,400 in 2017 and still receive federal credits to counterbalance health insurance expenses. The threshold is $48,240 for an individual. By law, all Silverlevel plans must offer reduced coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles.1,2

According to federal law, off-exchange plans must meet the basic standards for health coverage set forth in the Affordable Care Act and offer all the consumer protections of plans sold through the health insurance exchanges. Your health status cannot disqualify you from enrolling in an off-exchange plan.3 This is the time to take a good look at your health insurance coverage. Rather than simply accept auto-enrollment for 2018, use the 6-week window to evaluate other plans. Shop smartly, for your health coverage matters.

Silver plan tax credits will rise proportionally with premiums. Everyone knows monthly health insurance payments are rising for 2018. The Congressional Budget Office forecasts that premiums for the popular Silver plans will increase 15-20%. Even so, many Silver plan participants may not feel the pain, because the size of their tax credits will grow. As an example, the Kaiser Family Foundation says that an individual with a $30,000 income enrolled in the second-cheapest Silver plan will pay 2.9% less for coverage in 2018 than in 2017 when credits are applied.1 True, some major insurance carriers are leaving Affordable Care Act exchanges next year; others are discontinuing their Platinum and Bronze plans, which the ACA does not require them to offer. Offsetting that bad news, it may actually be a better value to buy a Gold or Platinum plan than a Silver plan if your income allows you to qualify for a health care subsidy (the threshold is $30,150 for an individual and $61,500 for a family of four). If your income is low enough to make you eligible for a subsidy, you may also be able to buy a high-deductible Bronze plan for a very inexpensive premium or even get Bronze coverage for free.1 36

A Long Way Home: A Memoir By Saroo Brierley A Long Way Home inspired the major motion picture Lion, which stars Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman, and Rooney Mara. A moving, poignant, and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit: hope. At only five years old, Saroo Brierley got lost on a train in India. Unable to read or write or recall the name of his hometown or even his own last name, he survived alone for weeks on the rough streets of Calcutta before ultimately being transferred to an agency and adopted by a couple in Australia. Despite his gratitude, Brierley always wondered about his origins. Eventually, with the advent of Google Earth, he had the opportunity to look for the needle in a haystack he once called home, and pore over satellite images for landmarks he might recognize or mathematical equations that might further narrow down the labyrinthine map of India. One day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for and set off to find his family.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, death, and hope in a Mumbai undercity By Katherine Boo In this brilliant, breathtaking book by Pulitzer Prize winner Katherine Boo, a bewildering age of global change and inequality is made human through the dramatic story of families striving toward a better life in Annawadi, a makeshift settlement in the shadow of luxury hotels near the Mumbai airport. As India starts to prosper, the residents of Annawadi are electric with hope. Abdul, an enterprising teenager, sees “a fortune beyond counting” in the recyclable garbage that richer people throw away. Meanwhile Asha, a woman of formidable ambition, has identified a shadier route to the middle class. With a little luck, her beautiful daughter, Annawadi’s “most-everything girl,” might become its first female college graduate. And even the poorest children, like the young thief Kalu, feel themselves inching closer to their dreams. But then Abdul is falsely accused in a shocking tragedy; terror and global recession rock the city; and suppressed tensions over religion, caste, sex, power, and economic envy turn brutal. With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects people to one another in an era of tumultuous change, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, based on years of uncompromising reporting, carries the reader headlong into one of the twenty-first century’s hidden worlds—and into the hearts of families impossible to forget.

India: In Word and Image, Revised, Expanded and Updated By Eric Meola This revised and expanded version of Eric Meola’s 2008 India takes the reader on a journey through Mumbai, Rajasthan, Agra, Dungarpur, along desert roads, to the Ganges water’s edge, including spectacular ruins, the Taj Mahal, and the Festival of Elephants, capturing the spectacle and vibrant colors of these ancient regions. For more than a decade, Eric Meola has returned repeatedly to India, photographing the people, temples, landscapes, architecture, celebrations, and art of this uniquely exuberant and incredibly diverse country. Meola’s journeys took him from the Himalayas and monasteries in the North to the temples of Tamil Nadu in the South, from the color and pageantry of Rajasthan in the West to the tea plantations of Darjeeling in the East. Over 200 photographs (edited from more than 25,000 images) will fill this beautifully printed, large-format book. The photographs will be accompanied by dozens of essays, stories, and poems by contemporary and classical Indian writers.

How to Define the Impact of Hindu Temples on Hindu Community? By Bhairavi Pandya, Hindu University of America (HUA)

W

hat is a mandir? A mandir or a Hindu temple is generally defined as a house of worship. More specifically the Hindi word mandir comes from the root mandira in Sanskrit. The following interpretation comes from Krishna G. Rampal in his book Sacred Structures: Artistic Renditions of Hindu Temples in Malaysia and Singapore. He writes: “The word mandira is derived from the words man which symbolizes

52

inner-self and dir which means a dwelling place.... A Hindu temple can be a separate structure or part of a building.... Since the Vedanta Society built the very first Hindu temple in the country, the famous San Francisco temple, in 1906 (see before and after images below), the quest to sustain Hindu faith became a passion through the following years.

NOVEMBER 2017 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

That quest has translated into new temples that continue to be planned and crafted with beautiful architecture and iconic sculptures; each exemplifying an epitome of India’s religious and spiritual heritage. In United States, temples are special places of worship, where the community gathers not only to pray, but benefits from special pujas as well as related socio-cultural activities leading us to this question; how do the Hindu temples impact the Hindu community? The relationship between temples and the Hindu community in United States is slightly different compared to India due to many reasons. Firstly there are fewer temples, secondly travel is necessary to visit the temple of your choice, and thirdly due to the “commuters” lifestyle in United States, the Hindu temple becomes a weekend destination not only for adults but also for all children’s educational activities alike. It becomes all the more important to have the temple experience as a way of life and not just an occasional trip to meet an obligation. The sustainability of Hindu faith depends upon the level of immersion and activities offered by the temples to the current immigrants as well as the non-native language speaking new generation. This became a personal quest for the first generation of Hindus that emigrated to U.S.A. where they established the temple as a community resource and got involved in religious activities and volunteering at nearby temples and faith-based centers. There are a variety of religious societies and faith-based groups that have developed a listing of temples; however the information is limited and the effort is disjointed. This energy should be channeled through a unified initiative to document the study of our Hindu quintessential temples and their effect on the Hindu community. “The first Hindu temple in the whole Western world ... dedicated to the cause of humanity” —proclaimed Swami Trigunatitananda, in the interest of interfaith harmony, at the temple’s dedication on January 7, 1906. Studies show that a comprehensive document can be developed that identifies not only the various temples located in United States but also list the various activities and experience offered by each temple. Although there is published content and books on temples in North America, the ultimate goal should be to further define the religious and community-based approaches being implemented for the betterment of the Hindu 54

community; to discuss the various architectural styles and iconic sculptures associated with the temples; how are they related to the divine Hindu mythology and scriptures; and how do they affect the temple experience? What are the efforts being undertaken to educate and instill Hindu values in the next generation and ensure sustainability for the future? What are the avenues utilized to promote Hindu awareness in the next generation within the Self, at home, at the temple, in school, and in the society that is predominantly non-Hindu? It becomes all the more important to specify factors such as; does the temple have a website, priest, types of services, architectural style, balavihar, adult classes, coordination with other temples, inter-faith activities, conference participation? Such attribute data will help analyze their effect on the Hindu community. These factors will add value to the North American temple data store and become a living document that can be passed on to the next generation and sow seeds to sustain Hindu faith for the future. The Hindu Community in United States has been asserting to keep its faith alive since Swami Vivekananda represented India and Hinduism and at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 1893; and Hindus have come a long way since then. It is estimated that today there are more than 400 Hindu temples in USA. This is an exciting time to identify, study the temples, their architecture and their effect on the Hindu community. Together with HMEC and HPEC’s respective executives’ proactive input in this endeavor, a comprehensive listing of Hindu temples is an inevitable success. This is the time when community leaders can participate and forward details on their temples and their activities. The information can be placed in a living document which will include all the various aforementioned factors in a spreadsheet format. This project initiative will be of great advantage as it will provide the Hindu community a common platform to share information and centralize communications towards our common goal- to sustain our Hindu faith beyond the next generation.

Written by Raj Shah llustrated by Kamlesh M & Natasha S

We love Diwali! takes you inside the homes of families living in America where Hindus, Jain and Sikh children together celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights. In their own words, the children take turns explaining the different customs and traditions celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs during Diwali.

The children gather together to participate in a Diwali pooja and are especially excited because this is one day when they perform the rituals rather than their parents!

Of course, no Indian festival is complete without delicious food, so the children end the day by eating Diwali mithai (sweets) and by lighting fireworks.

Holi Hai!

Written by Raj Shah llustrated by Kamlesh M & Natasha S
