OCTOBER 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Edito r’s View Dear Readers, October is a very special month in my life. I am sure the first thing that comes to your mind is that it is when most Hindus celebrate Navratri and Diwali. Yes, that is one of the reasons. But as you already know, per Hindu calendar Diwali and Navratri do not always fall in October since we follow the Lunar calendar. The main reason it is very special for me is because of October 2, my mentor Gandhi ji’s birthday. And this year is very special as we will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi ji. Gandhi ji, who was also called Mahatma and the Father of Nation (Bapu), was born as an ordinary man yet his extraordinary deeds and non-violence philosophy changed the world we see today. Gandhi ji’s fight for freedom and peace gave voice to many landmark movements in India and all over the world. Along with the entire Desh-Videsh Media Group team and our readers, I pay a heartwarming tribute to ‘Bapu’ on his birth anniversary. As you have likely heard in South Florida, we celebrate Gandhi ji’s 150th birth anniversary of at a bigger level than usual. Please check out the Community News section for all the details. Now let me talk about my second mentor, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji. This issue includes two articles about him. The first is “Modi 2.0” and the second discusses the abolishing of Article 370 from Kashmir. Regardless of whether you agree with changes in regard to Kashmir, I am sure you will agree that it was a gutsy move. Over the last 50 years, several Indian leaders have talked about it, but nobody was able to to do anything about it. Being Gujarati, I may be a bit biased but I am sure most of you agree that when we talk about Gandhi ji, Modi ji, Sardar Vallabhabhai, Ambani and Vikram Sarabhai, it will not be out of place if I say “Gujus Rock.” Speaking of people who rock, Bollywood superstar duo Amitabha Bacchan and Lata Mangeshkar come to mind. In this issue, we discuss Amitabh Bachchan who has been selected for the 66th Dadasaheb Phalke award, which is India’s highest award in cinema. In my opinion, Amitabha Bacchan, who has been entertaining us since 1969, should have gotten this award a long time ago. Please also read our article about Lata Mangeshkar’s 90th birthday and PM Modi ji’s special message to her. Now last but not least, I would like to wish every one of you and your family members, a Happy Diwali. This year on October 27, we will celebrate the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali means means row of lighted diyas, and diyas represent knowledge, purity, morality and consciousness. Let me end my column this month with a shloka from Brihadaranyaka Upanishad I.iii.28: Asato ma sadgamaya Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya Mrityorma amritam gamaya Om Shanti Shanti Shanti. Lead me from the asat(untruth) to the sat( Truth) Lead me from darkness to light Lead me from death to immortality Om Peace Peace Peace. Raj Shah Managing Editor

Sometimes our children are more interested in the holidays that their friends celebrate than the ones their parents celebrate. The challenge is to engage them but a little creativity goes a long way. Diwali was always “the festival of lights,” and that was the extent of my knowledge. Then Diwali became more tangible

when, one year, my dad brought home clay and we all gathered around to make our own clay diyas. For us, that was the year that Diwali came alive. It was a fun activity and little did we know, but there was a hidden agenda. While we were having

fun, my parents took the opportunity to sneak in stories of Diwali. Over the years, this has become a family tradition. Here are some more ideas. Use colored powder or colored rice to create beautiful rangoli designs. Another popular festival is Navaratri and the best part is the Dandiya Raas. But instead of buying dandiyas, why not make them? Interested in these simple DIY crafts? For the diya, you can purchase the clay and paint from Michaels or AC Moore. The rangoli powder can be purchased at Indian stores. Or, you can use your children’s paint to make colored rice. You can also make paper stencils for the rangoli designs giving you extra 17

Modi 2.0: The First 100 Days of

Narendra Modi’s Second Term in Office

T

he National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has completed the first 100 days of its second term in office. After a landslide victory in the general elections of May 2019, PM Modi’s government secured its second term in power, and upon entering office, unleashed a slew of policies and political changes. Here’s a look at some key decisions by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government within the first 100 days of their second stint in office.

Triple Talaq In a landmark decision on July 30, 2019, the Union Government passed the Muslim Women 24

(Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2019, which bans and criminalizes the practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims. Turning the bill into an act was a positive move by the Government to protect vulnerable Muslim women. In discussing the bold move, PM Modi asked, “If we can take steps against ‘Sati’ custom, female feticide, child marriage and dowry, then why not against instant triple talaq.” OCTOBER 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Revoking Article 370

One of the most historic moves made by PM Modi and his government was to revoke Article 370 and Article 35A of the Indian Constitution. This removed the special status and provisions accorded to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370 offered the state the power to have a separate constitution, autonomy over the internal administration of the state, as well as a separate state flag. Whereas, Article 35A defined that the residents of J&K lived under a separate set of laws, including those related to ownership of property.

Mega Bank Merger

On August 20, 2019, Government announced the merger of 10 public sector banks into four large banks. The aim was to provide better banking facilities to consumers as well as create fewer and stronger global-sized lenders. It was a way to enhance profitability and boost the economy.

POCSO (Amendment) Bill 2019

Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019

In another key step taken by the government, the Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Act, was cleared and paved the way for the bifurcation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. 26

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill 2019 is landmark legislation introduced by the Government. The legislation includes a death penalty that has been incorporated in the Bill for sexual assaults on children. Along with this, the government decided to set up 1,023 fast track courts in one year for speedy judgment in POCSO cases.

Anti-Terror Law

On August 2, 2019, the Parliament passed the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act 2019. This is a cornerstone in PM Modi’s zerotolerance against terrorism. The amendment gives the power to the central government to designate an individual as a terrorist and seize their property.

Howdy Modi Event With the tagline of “Shared Dreams, Bright Futures,” a mega event, called ‘Howdy Modi,’ was organized on September 22, 2019, in Houston, Texas. The intent behind the event was to build on the common aspirations

that bring together the two great nations – India and the United States. With over 50,000 people in attendance, PM Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump came together to address, woo, and showcase the common goals that both nations hold for the future.

Revoking Articles 370 & 35A: Benefits Behind the Removal In a historic move, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the National Democratic Alliance Government to revoke Article 370 and Article 35A of the Indian Constitution.

Article 370 Article 370 grants special status and provisions to the state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). It grants autonomous status to the state and was added to the Constitution on October 17, 1949. The article offered the state the power to have a separate constitu 34

Article 35A Article 35A was incorporated in the Constitution in 1954, and provided special privileges and rights to the citizens of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. This article gave the J&K legislature complete discretionary power to decide who are ‘permanent residents’ of the state. Special rights were also given regarding employment with the government, and acquisi

tion, autonomy over the internal administration of the state, and a separate state flag. The Parliament of India needed approval from the J&K Government before any laws could

be applied in the state, except those related to defense, finance and foreign affairs. In all, the Article restricted Parliament’s legislative powers in J&K.

tion of property in the state. Under the article, citizens of other states of the country cannot invest in property in J&K.

Revoking Articles 370 & 35A The abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35(A) is said to be mutually beneficial for both J&K and the rest of the country. By revoking the Articles, the people of J&K will benefit from the right to education for all residents of the state, irrespective of any biases. Secondly, it will increase opportunities for investment in the state. With increased accessibility to the state in terms of property investments, it will aid in business development.

State banks that were earlier controlled by the state government will now be regulated by the Central government. This will open them to opportunities such as Pradhan Mantri Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, and Sukh Samriddhi Yojana. Another big social effect of the repealing Articles 370

and 35A is for women. Earlier on, female residents of J&K were deprived of their property rights if they married a non-permanent resident of the state, a provision that also extended to their children. Women can now enjoy the incentive of passing their state rights to their children and ‘outsider’ spouses.

SBA 504 Loan vs. SBA 7(a) Loan At-A-Glance Comparison

SBA 504 LOAN (Commercial Real Estate& Equipment) 90% Fixed-Rate

SBA 7(a) LOAN (General Purpose)

LOAN Minimum–$125,000 Minimum – $50,000 SIZE Maximum–$20 million+ Maximum–$5 million

Small Business Administration Loans Small Business Administration (SBA) offers several different loan options. Today we will focus our discussion the 504 Loan and the 7a Loan. An SBA 504 loan can be used to buy real estate, finance ground-up construction, finance building improvements, or purchase heavy machinery and equipment. An SBA 7a loan can be used for shortterm or long-term working capital and to purchase an existing business, refinance current business debt, or purchase furniture, fixtures and supplies.

Differences between SBA 504 and 7a loans? An SBA 504 loan is ideal for owner occupied commercial real estate properties. These loans require only a 10 percent down payment by the small business owner and funding amounts range from $125,000 to $20 million. A 504 loan’s interest rate is fixed, and no outside collateral is required. Also, fees are lower compared to a 7a loan. Currently, 504 loans are amortized over 20 years, and as of April 2018 they began accepting applications for 25-year term SBA 504 loans. On the other hand, SBA 7a loans can be used to buy a business or obtain working capital. The maximum loan for an SBA 7a loan amount is $5 million. The interest rate on a 7a loan, however, can be adjustable and tied to the prime interest rate. Collateral is required, at 90 percent. These loans are amortized over 25 years. Gandhi and Global Nonviolence Compiled by Doug McGetchin, Associate Professor of History, Florida Atlantic University from around the world during and after his lifetime. Gandhi’s impact around the world in social and political struggles has

In the 2019 summer session at Florida Atlantic University, the class “Gandhi and Global Nonviolence” explored the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi under the direction of history professor Doug McGetchin. Gandhi’s life, especially his leadership in the Indian independence movement, was the main focus of the course, but his role in amplifying and championing the nonviolent techniques of Satyagraha (holding onto truth, or nonviolent struggle) that helped free South Asia from British colonial control, and its growing legacy in the seven decades that followed was also explored. Gandhi grew up in western India, received legal training in England, developed his technique in South Africa, and collected disciples and admirers 48

been profound, inspiring other activists including Dr. Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and Aung San Suu Kyi. The method of nonviolent resistance has changed the world from South Africa to Serbia, Egypt, Montgomery, Selma, Manila, Leipzig, and Calcutta. Papers by students, a requirement as part of the course, examined Gandhi’s role in the Indian Independence movement as well as his wider legacy as an inspiration for nonviolent struggle by Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King. The following includes abstracts of a few student papers. “The Spiritual and Political Parallels Between Gandhi and Dr. King” Cierra Hall

When it comes to oppressed minorities, there are typically two tactics frequently used: violence or nonviolence. Violent movements lead to additional calamity, where many lives may be lost. However, the utilization of nonviolence tactics through peaceful marches, boycotting, fasting, and labor unions, can free oppressed minority groups while bringing the oppressed and the oppressors together in such as a way so that future relations and even coexistence is possible. Two of the greatest examples of nonviolent movements was in India’s, led by Mohandas K. Gandhi, and the United States, Led by Martin Luther King Jr. The Indian movement was to gain autonomy from the British and lessen the power of the caste system while the Civil Rights Movement in the United States sought to gain equal rights for all members of society no matter the race. Although Gandhi and Dr. King were in different parts of the world at different times, to what degree were their challenges and nonviolent techniques parallel? King, a young adult when Gandhi was assassinated, was heavily influenced by Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance movements and eventually adopted and used Gandhian technique which successfully led to racial desegregation in the United States.

“The Making of a Mahatma” Antonia Isaac Born in 1869 as one of five children, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi would surpass the leadership of his for bears to become one of India’s most prominent Icons through his lifetime experiments with the principles of Satyagraha. But, was he worthy of Sainthood? Or was he simply a common man making the right choices? The Nobel Peace Prize Committee nominated Gandhi for the Peace Prize five times. Gandhi’s political antagonist, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, on hearing of Gandhi’s death sent a letter stating, “One of the Greatest Men.” In 1921, the pastor of NY City’s largest liberal congregation, considered Gandhi “The Greatest Man in the World Today. Upon his death, the London Times referred to Gandhi as, “The most influential figure India has produced for generations.”

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a sagacious individual who gave warning of the various atrocities committed by those in power, before and during his lifetime. He was most notable for his use of nonviolent activism through various methods of protest against his oppressors. According to Louis Fischer, American journalist who helped edit a collection of Gandhi’s writings, “Gandhi had a genius for making abstruse ideas practical, and one of the best examples comes when he explains the basis of satyagraha [in other words truth force].” He is not wrong, Gandhi’s endless variations of nonviolent resistance persisted well into both the 20th and 21st Centuries. Political activist Nelson Mandela utilized Gandhian ideas in his quest to change laws and uplift his fellow countrymen in a nonviolent fashion so as not to senselessly lose lives to fruitless violence. To what extent did the young Mandela utilize nonviolent methods similar to Gandhi? Some could argue that he hardly embraced pacifistic ideologies since he was convinced that the

downfall of the Apartheid regime would not occur without some form of armed resistance. Although it occurred in the final half of the 20th Century, people’s movements sparked by injustices of an oppressor, in this case the Apartheid government, headed by Mandela is comparatively similar to Gandhi’s in how he employed varying forms of nonviolent resistance such as community education, marches, boycotts, strikes, and a multitude of other civil disobedient actions. “Gandhi and His Method: The Formative Influences” Yechezkel Seinfeld Mohandas Gandhi’s political achievements are readily apparent. His efforts in South Africa went a long way towards alleviating the hardships of his fellow Indians there, and in India his efforts were crucial to its ultimate independence from British rule. The political method he created, which he came to call Satyagraha, was hugely successful, and was the main factor in his political successes, both in large scale, and on an interpersonal basis. Yet, the most commonly revered part of Gandhi’s exemplary life remains the personal traits and characteristics

of the man himself. Millions today still call him the “Mahatma” (Great Soul) denoting a level of spiritual elevation which he is believed by many to have achieved through his ceaseless efforts at personal transformation and self-restraint. Perhaps one might consider that this personal reverence for Gandhi is primarily of religious value, and that the study of his exemplary method is worthwhile only to the scholarly. However in truth, the two qualities are inseparable, as both are merely facets of Gandhi’s personality: his selfimprovement and “saintliness” was a necessary factor in the success of his political method, and after all, he always saw his political method as a practical facet of Ahimsa to which he had pledged himself, and therefore to him it was only a reflection of his personal conviction. His achievements lead one to wonder from where did he obtain such qualities? The answer, it might be assumed, lies in his

childhood influences, the formative experiences which are often fundamental to one’s persona in later life. So, the question falls to which influence was most essential to the formation of the man as a whole, in whom developed both “saintliness” and the political method of Satyagraha. While it is easy to imagine that this question can be answered simply at its root source – by examining Gandhi’s early influences, those which directly contributed to these qualities – the reality is very complicated. Between his mother’s religious zeal and positive teachings, his wife’s behavior towards him from which he learned his art, and between his own experiments with truth whose ultimate result was to solidify his fidelity to truth and Ahimsa, and to cling to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, one might theorize that the conclusion could be reached by discerning which of these was antecedent – that is to say, was the primary quality which enabled all the others, which enabled him to change throughout his life, and to constantly seek improvement. However, to give priority to the importance of one feature over the others is uncertain, and who is to say that in the absence of one, he would still have become “the Mahatma?” Rather it is best to see all of these influences as one, that his mother’s influence, his relationship with his wife and his own experiments with truth all led him towards one thing which alone formed the basis of the entirety of Gandhi’s efforts at personal change, and therefore

formed the basis for his political success. The main effect these influences had on Gandhi was to enable his personal philosophy of adherence to truth and to incline him towards the Bhagavad Gita, which he considered the ultimate source of truth, from which he learned to refine his way of life, and which formed the greatest direct influence on both his private deeds and his public ones. Actor Shivin Narang to romance Jennifer Winget in Beyhadh 2

TV Actress Juhi Aslam Blessed with Baby Boy

The sequel to Jennifer Winger’s hit TV show Beyhadh has been garnering a lot of attention. Fans are excited to see Jennifer back in the role of Maya Mehrotra. Even though her character was filled with shades of grey, audiences loved it very much. The latest is that actor Shivin Narang will play the lead role opposite Jennifer in Behyadh 2.

TV actress Juhi Aslam who is fondly known for playing the role of Bharti in Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo, has been blessed with a baby boy. The actress married Karim in 2018, gave birth to their first child on August 19. The couple had a small, intimate wedding in their hometown Shikohad, in Uttar Pradesh, India, on October 9 last year.

Shivin was last seen in Internet Wala Love. The actor also participated in the reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi 10, which will air next year. It was earlier rumored that Shivin will be seen in Bigg Boss 13, hosted by Salman Khan. However, the actor has rejected the reality show. In discussing Jennifer Winget and Beyhadh 2 in an interview, the actor said, “She (Jennifer) is a fine actress and I am happy about sharing screen space with her. When I heard the story, it never felt even for a second that the narrative is driven by one character. It’s also about how well an actor performs to establish himself. I don’t do shows in which heroes don’t contribute to the drama.” Shivin rose to fame with shows like Surveen Guggal: Topper of the Year and Ek Veer Ki Ardaas: Veera. 66

The couple named their baby boy Mohammad Rahim. The social media post was captioned as “Every Father Should Remember That One Day His Son Will Follow His Example Instead Of Advice.” In an interview to a website, Juhi revealed, “It is indeed a very happy moment for all of us. We have named him Mohammad Rahim.” She even shared the first photo of her son with her husband, who can be seen kissing their son’s feet, on social media. Juhi, who made her small screen debut in 2010 opposite Vikrant Massey in Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo, has also acted in shows like Badho Bahu, Qubool Hai, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3, and Jodha Akbar.

Hina Khan Leaves Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2

Shweta Tiwari Set to Return to TV after Three Years One of Indian TV’s beloved bahus Shweta Tiwari is all set to return to the small screen. The actress, who is well-known for playing Prerna in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, will be seen on TV after a gap of three years. Shweta will make her comeback with Sony TV’s new show Mere Dad Ki Dulhan, which is a coming-of-age story. She will be playing a Punjabi character on the show.

Here’s some sad news for Hina Khan’s fans who loved her vampish avatar in Ekta Kapoor’s reboot version of Kasautii Zindagii Kay. The actress has left the show for good and will not be reprising the role of the iconic television vamp Komolika.

In an interview Shweta said, “I am coming back on television screens after three years and I have selected Mere Dad Ki Dulhan as my comeback show because it is a very different character that I am portraying. It has a lot of emotions and is hilarious at the same time.” In discussing her character, she revealed, “My character of Guneet is a relatable one, as we find them everywhere. I love stepping into shoes of unique characters each time. For my look in the show, the makers didn’t want my long hair. Hence, I am keeping them short. My character is outspoken, straight-forward and is full of life.” Shweta was last seen on TV in Begusarai. She has also participated in many reality shows like Nach Baliye, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, and Bigg Boss 4.

Hina, who signed her first Bollywood movie with director Vikram Bhatt, exited the show earlier this year. While it was suggested she might reenter the show later, it now looks like that won’t be happening. Through a cryptic tweet on Twitter Ekta Kapoor revealed, “New komo!!!?????? But whooooooooooo;).” In reply to the tweet, even Hina Khan conveyed her “Best Wishes” to Ekta. Hina Khan gained popularity as Indian TV’s favorite bahu Akshara in the show Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. She also took part in the reality show Bigg Boss 11. Earlier on, names of Tashan-e-Ishq actor Jasmin Bhasin and Gauahar Khan were circulated as Hina’s replacement. It has now been confirmed that TV and Bollywood actor Aamna Sharif will be playing Komolika in Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2. Aamna is well-known for her role of Kashish in Kahiin To Hoga. She has also worked in Bollywood movies like Ek Villain. 68

Zee TV’s Aghori to Go Off Air in Three Months While there are many Indian TV shows that are enjoying years of bond with their audiences, many others are inching towards building the same long-lasting rapport with the viewers. As new shows come and go, here’s one recently launched show that is about to go off air within just three months after its launch. Zee TV’s Aghori, starring Gaurav Chopra, failed to garner good audience ratings and is on the verge of going off air. Recent reports published in an entertainment portal hinted that Aghori would go off air on September 28. Its lead actor Gaurav Chopra also confirmed the news of the show and revealed more details. “It’s been very difficult, very challenging but extremely fun ride. I am very glad that the journey was challenging and thoroughly satisfying because of the quality. The show is loved and watched on ZEE5. We keep getting good response from our fans too. It’s ending for now, but we may come back with a sequel soon,” said Gaurav. Aghori was a weekend show that launched on June 22. Apart from Gaurav Chopra, it also stars Simran Kaur and Parag Tyagi in key roles. Aghori will be replaced by a new game show Movie Masti With Maniesh Paul. Hosted by Maniesh Paul, it will be a filmy quiz show, also featuring Ali Asgar, Monalisa and Balraj Syal.
