Tejas Patel, 33, and Neha Patel, 34 dated for two years before tying the knot in March 2017. Tejas, a computer engineer, and Neha, a clinical pharmacist, met via Shadi.com in 2015. After exchanging pleasantries, the two met and continued to meet every month. It wasn’t long before the couple realized they were in love. Neha’s family lives in London and were bowled over by Tejas’ well-mannered and polite nature. Beginning the summer of 2016, the two began discussing plans to get married. On one occasion, when they met Neha had her nails perfectly manicured, in case Tejas proposed. It turns out the elusive proposal didn’t happen until November. “I was expecting a surprise engagement and ring, but the engineer in him wanted to pick out a ring that I would like,” said Neha. She added Tejas took several months to choose a ring based on her likes and dislikes.

Beginning the summer of 2016, the two began discussing plans to get married.
Tejas finally popped the question to Neha after flying her parents out to his childhood home. He proposed on a bridge in a park as his sisters and brother-in-law took pictures. Neha didn’t hire a wedding planner for their destination wedding. After reviewing several locations, she zeroed in on the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort in Florida, for its nice beach and large and gorgeous ballroom. The couple’s 350 guests enjoyed a “big fat Indian beach wedding.” The pre-wedding
events consisted of a mehndi, vidhi, and joint welcome dinner. The mehndi was peacockthemed, in sync with Neha’s lehenga. For the wedding there was an open mandap, and the colors matched the saris of the bridesmaids, magenta and fuchsia, while the groomsmen wore matching dupattas. The groom’s floral necklace included fuchsia, magenta and coral flowers. The wedding necklaces were red and white to match their outfits as well as the hanging Ganesha. Guests were welcomed by Ganesha and

Kinjal and Sebastien were in the same class at the medical school at Florida Atlantic University, and started dating February 2013. They both also completed their residency at University of Southern Florida in Tampa, Florida. Sebastien proposed to Kinjal while on a second-day sunset cruise during a surprise trip to St. Thomas. She cried so much she could hardly say “Yes!” Her parents and sister flew in to be there for this exciting event. Kinjal shares, “My mother is a superwoman who helped me plan the whole wedding, and my father helped behind the scenes.” The bride dreamed of having a magical wedding on December 30, and decided to hold the wedding where the couple met in Boca Raton. The wedding coordinator at The Addison was so very helpful, and the bride immediately fell in love with the venue. The Mehndi night was at the bride’s parent’s home in Parkland, Florida, with music, drink, dinner and mehndi for all. The Garba night SEPTEMBER 2017 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

was held at the Town Center Marriott in Boca Raton. The dĂŠcor was bright and colorful, and entertainment was provided by a group the couple brought in from New Jersey - Swati and Shashank Fadnis Group. Sebastien surprised the bride by doing a Bollywood dance with her best friends. The bridal party stayed at The Addison, where the main wedding events were held. The couple planned botht the Hindu and Christian wedding ceremonies for the same day. In the 34
morning was the Hindu wedding outdoor with a large Mandap draped in traditional bold colors and red silk. In keeping with the traditions of a baraat, the groom arrived on a horse for the ceremony. The Christian ceremony took place at sunset and was decorated in a romantic theme of light pink and blush colors. The outdoor reception was elegant with a beautiful large fountain and strings of thousands of bistro lights everywhere. SEPTEMBER 2017 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM
The couple advises newly engaged couples: “Don’t stress about little things that you can’t change, but do spend some time at each event to take it all in.”
This couple’s advice to other couples includes: Do your research to pick the best venue that is within your budget—and the best match for you. Don’t make rush decisions just because you are excited. Then enjoy the day because it goes by quickly. Don’t stress about little things that you can’t change, but do spend some time at each event to take it all in.

Dishant Dalal and Sara Gromoll dated for seven years before tying the knot. Dalal, 26, an IT analyst, and Sara, 26, a nurse, met in 2009 in high school, completed graduation the same year and then began dating. Five years into dating, Dishant, just a day before his birthday, proposed to his lady love, Sara, an event for which he planned over a month. He said the magical words to his sweetheart mid-air on a helicopter over Atlanta. For Sara, the entire experience was a complete surprise, though her family knew about it. “He told me he had a surprise for me that day, but I did not know what it was until we got to the airport. Even then, I thought this was something he was doing for his own birthday, said Sara. Sara did not have an inkling of what was to come, until Dishant popped the question and showed her the ring on the chopper ride.

With the vast Atlanta coastline below, the azure sky and clouds surrounding them, and the deafening noise of the helicopter, Dishant’s proposal to Sara is what dreams are made of. Sara could not hear a word of what Dishant told her, but he had written the entire proposal on his iPad. Even crazier still was that she had never flown before! Dishant and Sara had an Indian and Western wedding at the Foxhall Resort in Douglasville, Georgia. The couple are from nearby 46
Stockbridge, Georgia, so it was convenient for them to choose a wedding venue closer home. Sara and Dishant fell in love with Foxhall as soon as they saw the resort. The resort houses two big halls that were perfect for all both wedding ceremonies and reception. They hired a wedding planner so that the wedding and reception would be smooth and their families would enjoy without worrying about the arrangements.
For the Hindu wedding the bride and groom wore red and white floral necklaces. Indian music and pop songs played during the wedding ceremony. There were 130 guests in all who were introduced by the DJ. The bride’s bouquet featured hydrangeas, tulips, roses and ranunculus. The mandap decoration included floral spray arrangements with hydrangeas, tulips, snapdragons and delphiniums.

To Register or Not?
Wedding Registries for Indian Weddings By Raj Shah
I
n 1988, the Oldsmobile car company launched an ad campaign “Not your father’s Oldsmobile.” This successful campaign told car buyers that a completely new car was on the market that all generations could love it. The campaign was effective several other companies copied the same concept for their ads. Why am I am telling you this when I am supposed to discuss wedding registries? Well, trends in Indian weddings held in the United States are quite similar. What your parents did or did not do at their wedding or your older siblings did or did not do at their weddings is not applicable any more. The same goes with wedding registries at Indian Weddings. At one time, it was considered “rude” to even mention anything about gifts on an invitation card or in casual conversation. But soon newlyweds realized they had no use for three toasters, eight photo frames, and four alarm clocks. The next thing you know, their first event as a couple is to host a garage sale.
The next trend was that couples would list “no box gifts” on the wedding invitation. Yes it conveyed your message. But was bluntly putting that on the invitation rude or out of etiquette? In my opinion you may as well ask your guest to “Hand over your wallet.”
For obvious reasons that stopped. In the last few years, a new trend emerged, one that looks to stay around a while - the wedding Registry. Newly engaged Indian couples are always looking for new ideas and aren’t afraid of borrowing ideas from American culture. Just as destination weddings are the latest in borrowed trends, so are wedding registries. Why? Because it makes sense! Both for the engaged couples and the guests. So, now the question is whether to list the registries on the invitation. Obviously the smartphone generation has an answer. Go digital. Create your own personal website like www.sitawedsrama.com. Problem solved. Here you can list all your registries including links, making it helpful for your guests. And yes you do want to register at more than one company - because you want to furnish your bedroom or kitchen, but he wants the latest electronic gadgets. Advantages of a Registry • You get exactly what you want and need for your new home. • Reduce the likelihood of receiving the same item many times.
• Guests can ship the gifts directly to the shipping address specified by you. • Guests don’t have to guess what you might like - it’s easier to choose a gift. • If a guest can’t make it to the wedding, they can still send a thoughtful gift.
So, how should you go about creating a wedding registry? First, determine the places where you would like register. Ideally, these companies have a wide range of items you may need to furnish your new home together. Next, visit the store to look at items in person. It can be time consuming and for guys possibly frus-
trating unless the store you are going is Best Buy or a sporting goods store. You may choose to create a registry for an online only retailer, like Amazon.com. You can easily create this registry from the comfort of your own couch! Or, you can opt for a registry at a brick-andmortar store as well as an online retailer. Combine both to get the best of both worlds. Where should you register? Here’s a list of popular companies who provide in person and online services:

Talking About Money Before & After You Marry No money secrets should stand between the two of you as you wed. Provided by Rajesh Jyotishi No married couple should suffer from financial infidelity. If you hide debt, income or assets from your spouse, it can lead to a fight and possibly even an impasse in your relationship. Communication & transparency are essential when it comes to money. That truth should be recognized by every couple tying the knot, or even just cohabitating. Yes, financial matters can prove hard to discuss – but if you can’t talk about them together, that’s already a serious problem. That problem may affect more couples than we realize. In 2013, 7% of engaged individuals who answered a National Credit Counseling Foundation
poll said that if they discussed money issues with their fiancé, it would prompt a fight; 11% felt such a talk would uncover financial secrets, and 5% said it would “cause us to call off the wedding.”1 On the bright side, 32% felt a conversation about financial matters would be “a productive and easy conversation to have.” The most frequent response (45%) was that a money discussion would be “awkward,” but also necessary for the health of the marriage.1 You have to tell your future spouse about your debts. Do it before you get married, not after. That debt will become your spouse’s financial concern
You may want to pay the bills proportionately. If one of you earns 70% of the household income, then maybe that spouse should pay for 70% of the household bills and expenses. To many newlyweds, that seems entirely fair. Build retirement savings & an emergency fund together. Financially, there are few better ways to signify your long-term commitment to one another.
as well as yours. The two of you should plan together to pay down your individual debts in the coming months or years. Again, this represents a shared commitment. Don’t put your name on your deeply indebted spouse’s credit card. Attaching your name to that account will have minimal impact on your FICO score, but you don’t want to pay a (literal) price for your spouse’s runaway financial impulses.2 If you have six credit cards between the two of you, see if you can slim it down to three or four – the ones with the lowest fees and best rewards programs. Or see if you can just use those three or four and let the other accounts lie dormant. That might be a better move than just canceling the excess credit cards – that could hurt you, especially in the case of older accounts. About 15% of your FICO score is based on the duration of your credit history, so if that was good history, you don’t quite want to say goodbye to it.2
Wait on a big purchase. Consider waiting 24 hours (if you can) before going through with it. Or, alternately, set a dollar limit on such purchases – give each other limited financial autonomy I making major purchases that ends at X hundred or X thousand dollars. If the money exceeds that limit, then you both have to discuss it before it can occur. Make a budget. In fact, strive to make a zero-based version, a budget in which income minus expenses comes precisely to zero each month. This is a way of accounting for each and every dollar spent (actual or projected) and a way to pinpoint potential
Think about a new joint credit card account for the two of you. If you feel your spouse needs debt counseling before you can make that move, don’t be shy about requesting it. Even if your spouse has been living on plastic, think twice about leaving him or her without a credit card. You want (and need) to show some credit history. You will have to compromise. The most valuable verb in marriage is also really valuable when it comes to your shared financial life. Maybe you’re a good saver, a future “millionaire next door” – and yet your spouse is a comparative spendthrift. If you can’t compromise on a “money policy,” then maybe you can find a middle ground by saving for a special experience. Or, maybe each of you can set aside a bit of money per month to spend or save purely at your discretion. 60

monthly savings or redirection of income toward expenses. Watch those taxes. Should you file your taxes jointly? Not necessarily. That is wise for many couples, but if your incomes vary greatly it may be better to file separately. Consult a tax preparer for an answer. Also, look at your W-4 at work. It may be time to adjust your withholding status. If your spouse isn’t employed, you get to add another withholding allowance. Assuming he or she is employed, you can turn to irs.gov to learn how many allowances you are due in total. Then, you can divide that total by two. You and your employer need to follow the instructions on the W-4 so you don’t withhold more or less than you should. Talking about money isn’t always pleasant, but candor, communication and full disclosure can lead to clarity in your financial lives.

F
or this year’s Fall Bridal Issue, I’m bringing you straight to the source of some of the most vital information a bride-to-be can receive: newlyweds. These brides have already been there, done that, and now they’re sharing some of the key aspects of their own weddings. Our three lovely brides come from various backgrounds. Deepali* planned her destination wedding in India. Her story takes us on a journey through South Indian tradition, long distance coordination, & larger wedding parties! Meera* had a local wedding in her hometown where she grew up. Her adventure is filled with warm touches of home through & through. Priyanka brings us an intertwining of two worlds, a beautiful wedding weekend with both Hindu and Catholic ceremonies.
How did you feel about your nutrition?
Been There, Do This Instead! A Bridal Q&A
Deepali: I didn’t have much control over what we ate or where we stayed. It was difficult to control the day-to-day menu in India! So we ate what was provided by our relatives/ family. I wish I could have incorporated more salads. Meera: I kept a good fitness routine with a personal trainer a few months prior to wedding week. It helps to stay consistent! Priyanka: Don’t go into any crash diets/ binges beforehand! Do what your body is used to; I stuck to lots of fruit, and no sugar in my coffee during wedding week. Keep a buddy! My sister and I would jog together.

Deepali: It was tough to plan so much from the states; getting married just after grad school honestly made it difficult to be heavily involved in details. I didn’t know what my hair would be like the day-of, or what jewelry was picked. It can be stressful when you don’t know what the wedding schedule will be like, but it did help to leave it to my family since I had to concentrate on school. I trusted them. Meera: Invest money in the right places. I think I would have hired an event coordinator for at least the day-of; we didn’t have a wedding planner for the entire thing. Our family friends helped organize everything, even wedding décor! Seeing venues/caterers is a breeze locally. It was stressful at times, but it gave us all a chance to bond. Oh, and take family photos! It is SO important. Priyanka: Trust your wedding planner. They are trained to do this; try not to micromanage! I only had 6 months to plan it all, and communication makes all
the difference. We also respected our families’ traditions, letting them plan the Hindu & Catholic ceremonies. And, the guest list doesn’t need to be stressful! As long as my friends came, I didn’t mind who else my parents invited. Even if I hadn’t interacted much prior – if they were friends of my parents, I loved having them there!

What about stress with wedding details?
How about overall mental health? Deepali: You’ll meet all sorts of extended family in India. And some things, no matter how much you plan from the States, will only be sorted out in person. Be mentally prepared for complications; have backup options! Know who will be around you the week of, and who will keep you company through it all! Meera: Know who to lean on! Communication was so important for my husband and I. He knew I needed comfort and support. I felt so happy being around my local community and my best friends. It felt good to be home. Priyanka: Leading up to the big day, I went on long family walks; to keep peace of mind & bond. Looking back, those were some of the most memorable moments. It’s easy to lose yourself within the details of a wedding. Remember to check back in, and keep perspective of what’s truly important: your family. *Names have been changed to protect the request to remain anonymous.

Riya Sen Weds Longtime Beau Shvam Tiwari
Gone are the days when celebs shied away from marriage or kept them under wraps. The latest to join the bandwagon is Bollywood actress Riya Sen, daughter of extremely talented actress MoonMoon Sen and younger sister of actress Raima Sen. News that Riya Sen agreed to marry her longtime beau Shivam Tiwari has gained momentum recently. However, her sudden and closed affair wedding on August 16 in Pune with just family and close friends as attendees took everyone by surprise. The wedding was earlier supposed to take place at the end of August. Rumor has it that the 36-year-old actress’ pregnancy is the reason behind the hushhush marriage though there has been no official confirmation about the same. Riya has dated actors John Abraham and Ashmit Patel in the past. Nothing much is known about her now husband Shivam Tiwari apart from the fact that he loves photography, judging by his Instagram account. The cou 78

ple recently enjoyed a vacation in Slovakia during which they shared oodles of photographs of the trip. Pictures of the low key Bengali wedding have been released with the promise of a lavish reception party to be held in Mumbai. Judging by the pictures, Riya looked drop dead gorgeous as a Bengali bride in a red outfit while Shivam was seen adorning the traditional headgear of a mukut and topor, staples of any Bengali wedding. There was also a picture of Riya covering her face with paan leaves and carried by her brothers and male friends for the ‘shubho drishti’ ceremony. Pictures of the pre-wedding bash thrown by sister, Raima Sen were also shared. Riya Sen currently appears in Ekta Kapoor’s web series Ragini
MMS 2.2. Her last appearance was in the the web short film, Lonely Girl. Earlier, she appeared in movies that include Style, Jhankaar Beats, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar and Tere Mere Phere. She even did a Tamil movie, Taj Mahal as well as dozens of Bengali films. From our side, we wish the newlyweds a happy married life.

It’s okay that I’m bummed, but I don’t have to stay that way.
You’re human. On top of that, you’re a woman, so you’re probably pretty in tune with your emotions. Allow yourself to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. Do kind things for yourself in the meantime. Then, when the emotion isn’t serving you any more, just let it go.
2
ship, you are enough. You are valuable and you are worthy of love. Simple as that. Besides, hitching your sense of self-worth onto a relationship is quite a lot of responsibility for two people who are just trying to get to know each other. Lighten up on yourself--and your dates.
3
His opinion of me is valid, but it’s none of my business.
The truth is, he really may not be that into you. And you know something? That›s totally okay. His level of interest (or lack

So, instead of pulling your hair out trying to figure out why (or even if) he doesn’t like you, consider the possibility that the guy is just seeing things through his perspective and his personal tastes. You can honor that without putting yourself down in the process.
4
I’m not a mind reader.
There could be tons of reasons why this dude isn’t calling you back. Don’t presume you know why. Notice that when you do try to presume, you tend to go with the worst-case scenario type of thoughts (that is, you weren›t «enough» in some capacity, e.g., interesting, pretty, funny, etc.). In other words, don’t believe everything you think, and definitely do not assume to know what other people think, too.
5
What’s meant for me will not pass me by.
Not connecting with someone can sting. What makes that sting worse is if you allow yourself to believe that your “missed connection” was your last true chance for genuine love. If you find yourself entertaining such defeatist thoughts, call B.S. on yourself. After all, how

Desh Videsh Media Group Community Leader Awards Gala
On Saturday, August 26, 2017, Desh Videsh Media Group hosted the 3rd Annual Community Leader Awards at the Sawgrass Inn & Conference Center. The local community came together for an evening of speeches, dinner, and music creating an atmosphere that was both festive and celebratory. Over 24 years ago, DeshVidesh began with a simple idea. Our team believed in a professional, inclusive magazine for Indians, Pakistanis, and IndoCaribbeans that would offer insight into our culture and guidance for our youth and focus on the positives of our community. A lot has changed over the years, but those hallmarks resonate as strongly as ever. The DVMG Community Leader Awards are a continuation of 90
those principles and represent a celebration of the accomplishments of individuals who embody a passion for and a drive to develop the positives of their community. Awardees are all active participants in the community helping bring spiritual and cultural guidance for our youth locally as well as giving back to communities in our native countries. This year, the evening’s festive mood was set by a talented group of singers and dancers from the South Florida community. South Florida resident Rupal Talati began the evening with a her soulful singing. Parita Patel, affectionately known as the Bollywood Queen of South Florida, performed a heartwarming dance with her equally talented daughter Sanam, 12. Brother and
sister duo, Aarohi (15) and Arjun Talati (12), dazzled the audience with a dance set to a Bollywood medley. All of the dancers (Rupal, Aarohi, Arujun, Parita, Sanam, Suhani) joined together to present the audience with a dance tribute to Bollywood cinema from the 1950s to now. CEO and Co-Founder of Desh Videsh Media Group gave the keynote speech in which he offered his gratitude to the awardees for all they have accomplished. Keeping community needs in mind is of utmost importance, and he thanked the awardees for working tirelessly to advance their causes and keep the South Asian culture at heart. The entire team at Desh Videsh Media Group congratulates this year’s awardees.
