Ed i to r ’s V i ew Dear Readers, Once again I am very excited to bring you another issue of Desh-Videsh. As you know I get very excited when we feature successful fellow Indian American. And it becomes even more noteworthy if this fellow Indian American has achieved something extraordinary after severe obstacles. In this issue it is our pleasure to feature Dr. Kanwal Bawa, Single Mom, Cancer Survivor and Beauty Pageant Winner. Wow ! What a journey. And Speaking of high achievers, let me talk about Indian American Students who topped in their school and received a title of Valedictorian or Salutatorian. Once again it is very refreshing and encouraging to see so many Indian-American in the llst of Valedictorian/ Salutatorian. We are proud to feature these Indian-American students who are making the entire Indian-American community very proud. In this issue, we also have an article which talks about Indian-Americans who have made their marks in a variety of fields. As a managing editor of Desh-Videsh I get several emails asking for tips or to feature articles on how to raise high achievers kids or what to do so that their kids marry another Indian or how to make sure they stay vegetarian even when they go to college. These questions are very legitimate and valid questions. And it is very hard to answer these questions for me since I am not a trained psychologist nor do I have any other kind of formal education or training. But let me take a shot at it. Some of you may agree or not agree. In either case, please send me an email if you have an answer or opinion on any of these questions. In my opinion, for a parent, educating a child starts at a very early age. And it really starts with self educating a parent. You as a parent have to decide what is going to be your priority in your life and that will answer what kind of children you are going to raise. As I said before,I am not an expert in this field so I constantly ask these questions to people whom I meet. And I have made a short list of things for parents to do. • Point out the relation between hard work and extraordinary results • Create a culture of striving and excellence • Encourage to play to their strengths • Encourage self-confidence • Encourage them to ask questions and be patient with them • Encourage competition and teach them how to get up after losing • Do not use Reward and Punishment techniques, instead teach them values • Get involve in their life and Dedicate time whenever they need it • Don’t overuse control and stop being overprotective • Stop praising them for their God-given abilities instead focus on their effort. Well, let me stop here. We will talk more about this topic in the next issue of Desh-Videsh when we will cover the winner of the Spelling bee competition. I am sure the winner is going to be Indian American since 9 out of 11 finalists are Indian American. Let me close my column by reminding all of you our Myshadi Bridal expos in Orlando, Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale on August 22, September 12 and September 19 respectively. Until then be Safe and be healthy! Raj Shah Managing Editor Desh-Videsh Media Group

When did you arrive in the US, and why? My ex-husband is American and I met him in New Delhi where he was living for work. We moved to the US in 1999, about a year after we got married.
Tell us a little bit about your career and how you came to be where you are today. I obtained two degrees in English Literature, one at the University of Delhi (Lady Shri Ram College) and one at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I then attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I completed my internship and residency in Emergency Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. While I loved being an Emergency Medicine physician I felt that my calling was in cosmetic surgery, aesthetics and wellness. At this point I trained in hair restoration and transplantation, laser surgery, skin rejuvenation, male and female sexual health, hormone and IV therapy, weight loss, body contouring and more. I opened the doors of Bawa Medical in September 2019.
Being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42 changed everything. I had been misdiagnosed for almost 3 years despite going to my doctor when I felt a lump.
How did you come to be known as Rejuvenation Queen? My practice Bawa Medical in Boca Raton, Florida specializes in all things rejuvenation. I became known for helping people become better from the inside out. My facial rejuvenation and non-surgical facelift can take people back 10 to 20 years in time. I perform both surgical and non-surgical procedures for male and female hair loss, as well as eyebrow and beard restoration and transplants. My intimate wellness treatments for male sexual issues like Erectile Dysfunction and various female issues are so effective that we are saving relationships and bringing joy back into lives. I also do PRFM (platelet-rich fibrin matrix) based treatments which use your own growth factor and blood. I am one of just a few doctors in the world trained in and certified to perform the Vampire Facial and Facelift, and the P-shot for male sexual enhancement, and the O-Shot and Wing Lift for female sexual health. I now also use exosomes for more potent rejuvenation. I also developed a strongly anti-aging skincare line as well as an organic skincare line called Bawa Medical Skincare which is sold on my website as well as in my office. So as you can see, I do more rejuvenation than others around me, and so many different types of rejuvenation, that I came to be known as the queen of all things rejuvenation and finally, Rejuvenation Queen.

You were crowned Ms. Florida on June 12th 2021. How did that come to be? That is a loaded question! Having lived a life rooted in academia and medicine, Ms. Florida was never on the horizon for me. It was not that I looked down upon pageants. I simply did not consider them to be something I would ever do. Being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42 changed everything. I had been misdiagnosed for almost 3 years despite going to my doctor when I felt a lump. Mammograms and ultrasounds followed but they would not order a biopsy. I was told to stop being such a doctor and that the lump was benign. In November 2020 I went back for that same lump and demanded testing. That lump was diagnosed as cancer, but now, instead of one lump, there were more. Being diagnosed with cancer was surreal. My life f lashed before my eyes. I thoug ht about all the times my concerns were dismissed. I am a sing le m o t h e r, a n d I t h o u g h t about my sons. I also had a new medical practice. My family was overseas, and this was happening amid a worldwide pandemic. The timing could not have been worse. What was I going to do? How was I going to make it?
visible, and I refused to apply makeup to hide it. I also refused to wear a wig or any hair extensions. I was there to inspire cancer patients so hiding my cancer was not part of my plan. I spoke my truth in more ways than one, and was crowned Ms. Florida U.S. Continental 2021 in front of my mother, my sons and my dearest friends. As far as I am aware, there has never been a beauty pageant winner who has been actively undergoing cancer treatment while competing. So, in many ways, my win is ground breaking. I must give credit to the U.S. Continental pageant fo r t a k i n g a c h a n ce o n me despite my cancer treatment and for my medical team at the Sylvester Cancer Center (University of Miami), without whom I could not have walked onto the stage that day. They saved my life and for that and more, I will be forever grateful.
Tell us about your philanthropy. I have always tried to live a life of service. I am part of the Rotar y Club of Downtown Boca Raton. I am also mentoring a lovely young lady I met through the Eda and Cliff Viner Community Scholar Foundation. And last but certainly not the least, I am an ambassador for the American Cancer Society’s ResearcHERS initiative to raise funds for women-led cancer research. I did not know until I was a cancer patient myself that of the 49 Nobel laureates funded by the American Cancer Society, not one has been a woman. The ResearcHERS program raises funds for female researchers for all kinds of cancer, not just breast cancer. I have been interviewed on ABC News about it and am actively fundraising through Bawa Medical. I am now cancerfree but this is my mission in life. Cancer cure may not come during our lifetime, but it could for our children and grandchildren, and I will do my part to make that happen.
Dr. Bawa was also accepted into one of the most prestigious residency programs in the world at the Cleveland Clinic.
I decided that my cancer could not be just about me. It had to be bigger than that. I had to do something to raise awareness about cancer especially in those considered low risk. The other seminal decision I made was that I had to do something to inspire cancer patients to keep the faith, and to live their best lives despite cancer. I never lost hope and I did not want them to. I also refused to feel any less beautiful just because I was undergoing truly horrific chemotherapy side-effects. What better way to challenge myself and inspire others than to enter a beauty pageant while undergoing chemotherapy? On June 12th I walked onto stage in a gown just a month after my mastectomy. My port scar was clearly

New immigrants to the US often have great dreams of achieving their goals. What guidance would you give them? Work hard. No more no less.
I was always accepted by the US both personally and professionally. I had opportunities then and I do now. The importance of my effort cannot be underrated. As long as you are willing to put in the blood, sweat and tears, you will be rewarded with both respect and success.
Is there anything you feel you would still like to accomplish? There is always something to accomplish, and another mountain to scale. My practice serves people both in the local area as well as from other states and countries. I hope to spread the word about my unique brand of rejuvenation and wellness, and I invite the Asian community to learn more about the various services we offer. I also hope that the readers of your magazine will donate to my fundraising page for the American Cancer Society’s ResearcHERS initative. https://www.bawamedical.com/about/ my-cancer-journey/
What challenges did you face as an immigrant trying to establish a successful career in the US? Becoming successful is an arduous process in and of itself. I don’t think that my status as an immigrant ever held me back. I had great professors. I made lifelong friendships. I received low interest loans to pay for medical school. I made it to a great medical school without any contacts. I was also accepted into one of the most prestigious residency programs in the world at the Cleveland Clinic. I have since had a successful career in both Emergency Medcine and at my Boca Raton practice Bawa Medical. America has been good to me. This great nation has always rewarded my hard work with success. How would you compare life in the US today to when you first arrived? How does it compare in terms of opportunities, culture, or any other aspects? I was always accepted by the US both personally and professionally. I had opportunities then and I do now. The importance of my effort cannot be underrated. As long as you are willing to put in the blood, sweat and tears, you will be rewarded with both respect and success. I never used my status as an immigrant as an excuse for my own inadequacies, and my career speaks for itself.

On June 21, for International Yoga Day, people will take out their yoga mats and practice sun salutations or sit in meditation. Yoga may have originated in ancient India, but today it is practiced all over the world. In the United States, it was philosophers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau who first engaged with the philosophy of yoga in the 1830s. Yoga gained a wider American audience only in the late 1800s. Today, part of yoga’s appeal is that it continues to be seen as a mystical, ancient tradition. However, as I’ve discovered in my research, the practice of yoga has gone through some profound shifts. Here are four.
1. Yoga for health and happiness It was a Hindu reformer, Swami Vivekananda, who first introduced yoga to a larger audience. Vivekananda originally came to the United States to seek funds to relieve poverty in India. Several electrifying addresses he delivered at the World’s Parliament of Religions, the world’s first global interfaith dialogue held in 1893 in Chicago, brought him instant fame. He then traveled around the U.S. for the next several years, giving lectures and teaching yoga. We believe good journalism is good for democracy and necessary for it.
Most people today associate yoga closely with physical exercise and postures, known as asanas, designed to strengthen and stretch the body. There is more to yoga, however, than the physical. Yoga also encompasses devotion, contemplation, and meditation. In fact, the primary focus on the body would surprise both Patanjali and Vivekananda, who prioritized mental over physical exercise. Patanjali treated the body with disdain, believing it to be a prison. He was emphatic that we are not our bodies, and that any attachment to our bodies is an impediment to yoga. Vivekananda echoed these thoughts. He treated asanas with scorn. Vivekananda argued that an obsessive focus on the body distracts from the true practice of yoga: meditation. In contrast, contemporar y practitioners embrace asana as central to yoga. Contemporary yogis recognize that the mind, and the soul, are embodied. By “getting smart in their yoga,” contemporary yogis attend to their bodies and also to their emotions because the health of the body impacts the ability to see clearly and act deliberately.
Yoga involves, as I argue in my book The Art of Gratitude, paying attention to one’s habits.
Vivekananda revived the tradition of an ancient Indian sage, Patanjali, that had been almost forgotten. Patanjali likely lived in India somewhere between the first century B.C. or the fourth century A.D. He claimed that the goal of yoga was isolation from existence and freedom from the bonds of mortal life. According to Patanjali, to overcome suffering, individuals needed to renounce the very comforts and attachments that seem to make life worth living for many today. As the journalist Michelle Goldberg, author of “The Goddess Pose,” puts it, Patanjali’s yoga “is a tool of self-obliteration rather than self-actualization.” No one today is likely to see yoga as a way to renounce their existence. Most people are drawn to yoga to find happiness, health, and compassion in everyday life.
26
2. Value of physical exercise
3. Focusing on the self
A central practice of yoga is self-study, known in Sanskrit as “svadhyaya.” In the tradition of Patanjali, this means “the reading of sacred scriptures.” Today, svadhyaya has come to mean the study of oneself. People often take up the practice of yoga to lead happier, less stressed, and more compassionate lives. Yoga involves, as I argue in my book The Art of Gratitude, paying attention to one’s habits. Only by first noticing one’s habitual patterns does it become possible to change them. Sacred texts, broadly understood, can help this practice of self-study, as they encourage reflection on deep and difficult questions that do not have easy answers. For today’s practitioners, these questions include: What is the purpose of life? How can I live an ethical life? And what would truly make me happy?

Yoga is ancient, but it is not timeless. By stopping for a moment to consider yoga’s past, we can recognize the crucial role that all of us can and must play in shaping its future.
About the Author
Ultimately, self-study resides at the heart of a healthy yoga practice. It allows yogis to recognize their deep connection to others and the world around them. This recognition of interdependence and interbeing is central to today’s yoga.
4. Ethics of a yoga guru In ancient practice, the relationship between a guru and a student was crucial. Today, the guru-student model is going through a shift. Yogis no longer train for years in their guru’s home, as was the practice in ancient India. Yogis instead practice in studios, in parks, at fitness centers, or at home on their own. Still, many contemporary yoga teachers claim the title of “guru.” However, some practitioners of yoga are calling for an end to the guru model, given that it comes with an inherent power, which opens the door to abuse. There are many examples of such abuse, with a more recent one being the case of Bikram Choudhury, the 73-year-old founder of Bikram
yoga, who fled the country to avoid an arrest warrant in California in 2017 after being accused of sexual assault. In the wake of the #MeToo movement in the United States and India, many yoga practitioners have initiated important conversations about the ethics of being a yoga teacher. At the heart of these conversations is how yoga teachers must, above all else, treat their students, who are often deeply vulnerable, with dignity and respect.
Dr. Jeremy David Engels investigates the rituals and rhetoric of oneness—how human beings talk about oneness, interconnectedness, interbeing, and union, and then how they attempt to enact their imaginative visions in action. He is the author of The Ethics of Oneness: Emerson, Whitman, and the Bhagavad Gita, The Art of Gratitude, The Politics of Resentment: A Genealogy and Enemyship: Democracy and CounterRevolution in the Early Republic. For his work, he has been awarded the Karl Wallace Award and the New Investigator Award from the National Communication Association. Jeremy is also a yoga teacher and the coowner of Yoga Lab Studio in State College, PA.
Ancient, but not timeless Indeed, there is great power, and great mystique, in just how old yoga is. But as a professor of communication, I observe that one of the most common errors people make in daily conversation is to appeal to antiquity – what scholars call the “argumentum ad antiquitatem” fallacy – which says that something is good simply because it is old, and because it has always been done this way.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE? By Maria Wirth
T
his question is natural for any human being and is asked in every generation by many of the youth. I remember it troubled me a lot when I was young. I don’t think I could have found the answer on my own because some basic philosophical knowledge about us and the universe is needed, but luckily I landed in India and was even luckier to become familiar with India’s profound wisdom. This philosophical knowledge is contained in the Vedas and has painstakingly been memorized by Indian Brahmins and handed down to us over many millennia. One could call the Vedic mantras a “revelation” because the ancient Rishis clearly stated that they are apaurusheya, which means that they are not created by humans. This revelation, however, is not comparable with the so-called revelations of Christianity and Islam because it is not about a claim which can never be verified and which does not conform to common sense, like the claim, “if you don’t believe that this book contains the full truth you burn in hell forever.”
Vedas say that in absolute truth there is only consciousness (called Brahman) and though unimaginable, it is described as truth-consciousnessbliss, Satchitananda in Sanskrit. From that eternal, infinite, blissful, conscious ‘void’, the world of forms and names appears, like plenty of
bubbles and waves appearing on the ocean. Their forms are temporary; the ocean is eternal. Nothing is lost when the forms are lost. And ultimately, even during their existence as forms, the bubbles and waves are nothing but the ocean. Similarly, claims Indian wisdom, the forms in this universe are in essence nothing but consciousness. There are myriads of forms in different realms – visible and invisible to our eyes. Devas (usually translated as gods) are also forms, invisible to our eyes and far more powerful and long-lived, but they are not the absolute reality. Unmanifested Oneness is the Absolute, Brahman.
I don’t think I could have found the answer on my own because some basic philosophical knowledge about us and the universe is needed, but luckily I landed in India and was even luckier to become familiar with India’s profound wisdom.
In contrast, the knowledge in the Vedas makes sense, and part of it has already been validated by modern scientists. In fact, Veda means knowledge in Sanskrit (from vid) or science in Latin.
32
Science also came to the conclusion that ultimately all is one, nothing can be separated, and all is interconnected, but they have not yet acknowledged the ‘conscious’ aspect. Scientists call this oneness

“energy” and assume it is dead and insentient, and they mistake the consciousness of the scientist as some chance happening. Now this claim that all is blissful consciousness means that Brahman must be also in us. And indeed, the Upanishad declares “Aham Brahmasmi” (I am Brahman). If this is true, then it must be verifiable. Indeed, the Rishis claim, you can know that you are not a small person in a big world, but that you are one with Brahman. They give many tips on how to go about discovering this truth. And here we have the meaning of life: discover who you really are. You are not what you think you are, but you are one with all. When you discover it, you won’t run any longer after happiness in the world. You have discovered the ocean of bliss within you. “Know Thyself” was also encouraged in ancient Greece and
probably in all ancient cultures which unfortunately have all been destroyed. Only the Indian culture is still alive and still has true wisdom preserved, though it was also greatly damaged by Christianity and Islam, which want to make man forget his innate divinity.
These two religions, which require blind belief, claim to be about the spiritual well-being of humanity. In fact, it may be just the opposite: over the last almost 2000 years, they cut off humanity from the source of spiritual well-being which can be found only in one’s union with the Divine Existence.
Taste the Rainbow
Taste the Rainbow By Chahna Tailor Happy July! Some people eat to live, while others (like me!) live to eat. The thing is, everything you eat becomes your body. Your food can balance you or imbalance you; it can build a healthy body or an unhealthy body. So, how do you ensure a good balance? Let’s review some basic Ayurveda principles related to doshas and tastes. In Ayurveda, there are six rasa, flavors that make up all tastes. Each taste is a combination of two of the five elements and also falls under one or two doshas, Vata (V), Pitta (P), and/or Kapha (K). • Sweet is a combination of earth (K) and water (K) which can be used for building tissues (and weight). It is also calming for the nerves.
36
• Sour is a mixture of earth (K) and fire (P) and can help increase the absorption of minerals. It helps with tissue cleansing. • Salty is a blend of fire (P) and water (K) and is great for stimulating digestion, lubricating tissues, and improving a person’s taste ability. • Pungent is the fusion of fire (P) and air (V) and helps with increasing metabolism and stimulating digestion. • Bitter is made up of air (V) and ether (V) and has a light energy which helps with detoxifying. • Astringent is a mix of air (V) and earth (K) and is drying, which helps with drying fat, absorbing water, and tightening your tissues.

Which ones are right for you? Well, let us look at the doshas. When it comes to balancing a dosha, think of a seesaw. You must put enough of the opposite to balance. If one side is too light, you add some heaviness. If one side is too heavy, you take something away to make it lighter. Ayurveda works in the same way. Sweet, Sour, and Salty increase Kapha. All three of these tastes have a prominence of Kapha elements. So, if you are Kapha, it is best to avoid these tastes, especially Sweet since it is a combination of both Kapha elements. You would benefit from eating foods that are more predominant with Vata elements, such as Pungent, Astringent, and Bitter. Sour, Salty, and Pungent all have the fire element. These increase Pitta. If you notice that your Pitta is out of balance, it is best to avoid these tastes (especially Salty because it has both Pitta elements) and consume foods that are more prominent in Kapha and Vata elements such as Sweet, Astringent, and Bitter. Pungent, Astringent, and Bitter tastes all have air within them. These increase Vata. If you have a Vata imbalance, these tastes should be avoided, especially Bitter because it has both Vata elements in it. Try to consume foods that are high in Kapha and Pitta elements, such as Sweet, Sour, and Salty. Keep in mind, everything is a balance. If one of your doshas is out of balance, it does not benefit you to binge eat balancing elements. It will end up raising that dosha. For example (and personal experience!), if your Vata is high and you consistently eat Sweet and Salty foods, you can end up increasing your Kapha to the point where it comes out of balance. Maybe some of your Vata symptoms

Editor’s Note:
We are pleased to present this inaugural column, Legally Speaking. Each month, we ask an attorney to answer reader questions. This month, David M. Benenfeld discusses car accidents and accidents at the workplace. Please send your legal questions to editor@deshvidesh.com.
I just got hurt in an automobile accident, what do I need to do?
I just got hurt while working, what should I do?
When a car accident occurs, it can be traumatic not only physically, but also mentally. The most important thing to do is not panic and do not leave the scene of an accident. Check yourself and your passengers for injuries and dial 911 if someone is injured and needs an ambulance. Do not move a seriously injured person unless it’s absolutely necessary, and do not move your car unless your car’s position puts you in danger or the police instructs you to move it. Write down a description of the other car and license plate, and be sure to wait for the police to arrive. You may also want to take pictures of the damages to your car, the intersection where the accident occurred, skidmarks on the road, damages to the other car, as well as photos of any injuries, as well as road conditions at the time of accident. It is also important to get contact information of the other driver as well as their insurance carrier, an insurance policy number, and driver’s license information. When all of this is done, and after you talk to the police, if you are in pain, it is important to seek medical care with a doctor and do not downplay your injuries. You may also wish to contact an attorney to help you as you navigate through this process, in order to potentially obtain a settlement in regards to your injuries.
When you’ve had an accident while working, you must provide notice to your employer within 30 days. When you report your injury, it must be reported to someone in a supervisory capacity, and of course, medical care must be requested. It is good to not only report your accident verbally, but also by some kind of writing whether it’s by email, fax, or by text, and in this way, there will be a record as to when the incident was reported. In this way, should your employer ever say that you failed to report this accident, you would then indeed have proof that it was reported. In addition, when you start receiving medical care with the doctors, it is very important to let them know about any kind of pre-existing injuries that you have as well as prior accidents, and in this way, the doctor can give you a proper diagnosis. Also, it is also very important to let the doctor know about all your injuries that you sustained in this work-related accident for all body parts. In this way, the insurance company for your employer will not be able to deny that you failed to complain about certain body parts that have been hurt. Certainly, if you need help navigating through this process and would like to explore settlement, you may wish to contact an attorney.

egha Ganne is just seventeen years old, and the NJ citizen has already beaten final winner Yuka Sago and star player Lexi Thompson, winning herself lots of fans! Though the ever-smiling Megha floundered on Sunday’s game while getting two double bogeys on the front nine and turned in 41, she swiftly got back on her feet with a back 9 for the final score of 77. The crowd gave her a standing ovation, and Megha reported that she felt overwhelmed by all the support and love extended to her, especially by the fact that young people turned up to watch her play. Ganne has already emerged as a youth icon among the local community and especially young girls. The happy looking high school junior has already been slotted to play college level at Stanford. Social and affable, she happily signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans, naming these experiences as her favorite part of the game. Megha has been struggling with her schoolwork, especially her calculus project, before her math teacher was accosted on Twitter to help out, and the latter happily exempted the star player from the project. Megha’s T14 in the U.S. Women’s Open is classified by her as the important turning point in her life.

Sam secured 5955 votes that outnumbered his fierce competitor Mahesh Bahagia’s vote count by almost 2800. Incidentally, the third runner up got only 564 votes. Soon Sam Joshi will face Keith Hahn (republican) and popular independent contestants like Councilman Richard Breshcher and Mayor Thomas Lankey in the general elections. Other focuses include reduction of community waste and property enhancement. Major democrats of the region including John Poyner, Margot Harris, and Nish Patel endorsed Sam Joshi. Sam’s closest competitor Bhagia ran with the candidates from the Township council including Tom McCain, Sparshil Patel, and Shannon Peg. Bhagia and Joshi fought fiercely, and town citizens received campaigning materials with incriminatory news about both candidates. Indian Origin Journalist Megha Rajagopalan Wins Pulitzer
A
n international correspondent for BuzzFeed News, Megha Rajagopalan is an awardwinning journalist based out of London.
A former correspondent for Reuters in China, Megha became a staff correspondent for BuzzFeed News based in countries like China, Thailand, Israel, and Palestine. She has reported from 23 different nations in Asia and the Middle East, covering everything from North Korea’s nuclear crisis to Afghanistan’s peace process.
Megha won the Pulitzer Prize in the International Reporting category for her highly detailed investigative reports about China’s mammoth infrastructure that has been secretly constructed by the Eastern nation to detain Uyghur Muslims in its Xinjiang region. The report exposed China’s vast framework of prisons and mass internment camps used to hold as many as one million Muslims from Uyghur and other minor ethnicities. Megha was the first journalist to find and visit the internment camp in China’s far west four years ago, soon after the process of detaining hundreds of thousands of Muslims was initiated. China thereafter plain denied the existence of any such secretly built place in their country. Megha’s work there had won her the Human Rights Press Award in 2018. After this, the Chinese government attempted to silence Rajagopalan by ousting her from their country and rejecting her visa. A very determined Megha, however, despite enduring continued “harassment from the Chinese government,” refused to cower and continued working from London. Rajagopalan, along with two colleagues, made use of multiple satellite images of the Xinjiang region. For several months, they weighed redacted Chinese images alongside uncensored mapping software and interviewed over two dozen escaped detainees about their experiences at the camp. Rajagopalan even travelled to Kazakhstan, where many

studies have found that self-compassion is linked to higher positive body image, and self-judgment is linked to a higher negative body image. Try to be mindful, or aware, of your experiences without judging them and understand that others are in these difficult experiences with you.
4
Engage in mindful movement
If you are able, move your body in ways that bring you joy and rejuvenation and help you connect with and listen to your body. Bodies and abilities are different, and what is mindful movement for someone else may not be for you. Some activities, such as yoga, have been shown to promote positive body image as long as they don’t focus on appearance. Move in ways that help you focus on how much you enjoy moving rather than how you look while moving.
5
Practice self-care
Ask your body what it needs every day. Bodies need a regular supply of fuel, hydration, relaxation, stimulation, and sleep. Self-care can be hard to fit into a schedule, but it is very important to plan actions and activities that restore you to your best self.
6
Engage with nature
Interacting with nature is associated with a variety of health benefits, including higher positive body image. Activities that engage with nature, like hiking, may help you focus less on your appearance and more on how your body functions. Experiencing the beauty of nature can also help create opportunities for self-care, such as through rejuvenation and mindful movement.
7
Refrain from body comparison
It’s common for people to compare themselves to others. However, when they frequently compare their appearance to others perceived as more attractive, their body image becomes more negative. Body comparison can occur in many settings, and not just through social media – it can also happen in commonplace settings such as the beach, supermarket, and school. When you find yourself comparing your body to others and start to feel negatively about yours, try one of the strategies above to restore a positive body image.

8 Avoid the diet hype Studies show that dieting does not work; it is not associated with long-term weight loss and often decreases overall well-being. Instead, focus on fueling your body when you are hungry with foods that provide your body with lasting energy. Eating intuitively – using your natural hunger, appetite, and satiety cues to determine when, what, and how much to eat – is linked to health and well-being.
Reemerging from the pandemic with confidence There are many strategies to help build a positive body image, and resources are available to help you find one that works best for you. For those struggling with an eating disorder or severe negative body image, professional help is the best path forward. Positive body image isn’t just about feeling good about your appearance – it’s also accepting and loving your body regardless of how it looks and engaging in self-care to attend to its needs. Practice these strategies regularly to promote and maintain positive body image as you safely and confidently reenter your social world.

Priyanka Chopra Becomes Brand Ambassador of Victoria’s Secret A new feather on the cap of the ‘Desi Girl’ Priyanka Chopra-Jonas. She is now associated with the famous lingerie brand ‘Victoria’s Secret’ as their face. Victoria’s Secret started its journey back in the ’70s and is famous for its highly sexy models with perfect figures. However, they have recently been criticized for objectifying women and making unrealistic beauty standards for women. That is why Victoria’s Secret has taken a new approach of appointing real-life achievers from different fields of activities as their representatives. Priyanka Chopra is one of them. These selected individuals form a group named VS Collective, who will not only do the brand modelling but also promote Victoria’s Secret on their Instagram accounts. Priyanka Chopra-Jonas is proud to be a part of the famous brand along with being a part of this revolutionary change in its outlook. According to her, it is crucial to represent different sections of women and communicate to them that all of them are important. She also expressed her sense of pride and achievement for being a part of the famous Victoria’s Secret. Martin Waters, the CEO of Victoria’s Secret, said that they were slow to respond to the needs of the changing world. They would now emphasize the needs of women rather than that of men from the sexy lingerie. Apart from Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, the other representatives of VS Collectives include Megan Rapinoe, the 35-year-old soccer star and gender equity activist; Eileen Gu, a 17-year-old Chinese American skier; and Paloma Essler, the 29-year-old biracial and plus-sized model.

The ceremonies took place at Yami’s farmhouse at Mandi. A wedding planner was contacted by Yami’s father. Both Yami and Aditya were very particular about having a simple ceremony. The Mehndi took place at the courtyard of the farmhouse, and Yami looked beautiful in her yellow attire. There was a Sangeet ceremony after, and the marriage took place outdoors. Yami chose to wear her mother’s 33-year-old red saree with zari work along with gold ornaments and traditional chooda and kalire. With a golden veil, choker, necklace, maang tikka and nose rings, she looked like a radiant Himachali bride. Aditya was decked up in an ivory sherwani with the traditional turban. The marriage Mandap was decorated with marigold flowers and banana leaves. It was followed by a traditional lunch and a small reception in the evening. After the photos were posted, their co stars congratulated them. The list included Yami’s Vicky Donor costar Ayushmann Khurrana, Kartik Aaryan, Vani Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Varun Dhawan, and producer of Uri the Surgical Strike, Ronnie Screwvala.

Indian Idol Viewers slam the judges for fake stories
Season 12 of Indian Idol has been full of criticisms from the viewers. It is mainly due to the overdramatization of the personal incidents of the contestants and the tears of the judges at them. After the Father’s Day episode on 20 June, the netizens burst into severe criticism and said that Indian Idol is becoming more like a daily soap rather than a music show. On the Father’s Day episode, every contestant came with their fathers. They started narrating stories of their lives and the lyricist Manoj Muntashir gave a monologue before every performance and the judges Himesh Reshammiya, Sonu Kakkar and Anu Malik frequently broke into tears. This irritated the viewers and they started slamming the judges for their overreaction to different kinds of memes on social media.
70
Judge Neha Kakkar has been criticized right from the beginning for shedding tears now and then. Viewers also disapproved of the highlighting of the poverty and other difficulties of the contestants more than their singing talent.
Pavitra Rishta 2: Ankita Lokhande return as Archana and Shaheer Sheikh to play Manav
Amit Kumar, the famous singer and son of the late legend Kishore Kumar also criticized the show. He came to the show as a guest judge for the Kishore Kumar special episode. He expressed his dissatisfaction over the standard of the singing and said that since he was paid he had to praise the singers according to the channel’s instructions.
The second season of the famous television serial Pavitra Rishta is coming shortly. The first season saw the rise of Sushant Singh Rajput as Manav and Ankita Lokhande as Archana. This time, Ankita will resume the role of Archana while sources say that Manav will be played by Shaheer Sheikh. Pavitra Rishta season 1 started its journey in 2009 and became a household name. It was the story of a married couple Manav and Archana. The serial was produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms.
Former Indian Idol champion Abhijeet Sawant also criticized the show for losing its focus. He said that the show is more interested in selling the emotional stories of the contestants rather than highlighting their talents.
It was Pavitra Rishta that made Sushant Singh Rajput famous and he started getting film offers. He quit the show for firms in 2011. After that Manav’s role was played by Hiten Tejwani. The show went off the air
in 2014. It was this serial that saw the beginning of a relationship between Sushant and Ankita. They dated for 6 years and then broke up. Now that the serial is having its second season, viewers have a lot of expectations. There is huge grief for the untimely demise of Sushant Singh Rajput and that is why there was a huge buzz about who will be playing Manav. After a lot of rumours, it is now heard that Shaheer Sheikh of ‘Arjun’ fame is going to play Manav with Ankita returning as Archana. Now it has to be seen whether the second season of Pavitra Rishta can create the magic again or not. Ekta Kapoor decided to work on the second season after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020.

Huma Qureshi praised for her portrayal of Rani Bharti in Maharani Ever since the streaming of the web series ‘Maharani’ on the OTT Platform on 28 May, critics and viewers have been showering praise on the performance of Huma Qureshi. Huma has played the role of Rani Bharti, a village homemaker of Bihar who is also the wife of the chief minister of the state Bheema Bharti. After the failed assassination attempt on Bheema and his severe injury, Rani has to become the Chief Minister of the state overnight.
Unaware of the game of politics Rani took the chair at the order of her husband however with full reluctance. The story depicts the evolution of Rani as an honest politician to remove corruption. Along with that, she also becomes aware of the empowerment of women. The backdrop of this series is Bihar in the 90s, which was dominated by caste-based politics, which has also been reflected properly.

Huma Qureshi made the character lively and the transformation of Rani from an ignorant woman to an empowered Chief Minister has been extremely well portrayed by her. Sohum Shah in the role of his husband Bheema Bharti also acted very well. The series is directed by Karan Sharma. The show has some wonderful dialogues both in Hindi and Bhojpuri
to give the true essence of Bihar. Huma’s Bollywood colleagues have also praised her performance as Rani Bharti. The leading among them is Shatrughan Sinha and Twinkle Khanna. Shatrughan Sinha even termed her ‘Magic Queen’ in his tweets. Huma also thanked everyone including her fans telling them that they are her strength.
