Legendary Haunts of the Hudson Valley By Donna Davies, Founder of Haunted Hudson Valley, Ltd. www.hauntedhudsonvalley.net

Are you looking to venture into the dark side of the Hudson Valley? Look no further as I share some of my favorite legendary haunts in the area. Begin with a trip to Sunnyside in Tarrytown, the former home of Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. Irving lived and died at Sunnyside and his spirit has never left his beloved home. Irving’s ghost has been reportedly seen walking to his study. Further north sits Lyndhurst Castle, the eerie setting for the 1970s film “House of Dark Shadows” based on the gothic soap opera. Less than five minutes from Lyndhurst is The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery were the body of Washington Irving is interred. If you are brave enough, you can take an evening tour by lantern along the dark, winding roads of the cemetery as you learn about its famous and infamous residents. You may even hear the clipclop of horse’s hoofs as you walk across the Headless Horseman Bridge. For the more adventurous, I suggest you book a ghost investigation overnight stay at the Shanley Hotel in Nappanoch where the “Spirits Are Inn”. Dating back to the 1800s, this hotel’s sordid past is slowly being reveled through paranormal investigations. A ghost hunter’s dream comes true. Visit any of these legendary haunts of the Hudson Valley and let your imagination run wild.

s you step into a tasting room in the Hudson Valley Wine Country, you are met with hospitable staff who are full of information on the wine and winemaking history of the valley. Many people don’t realize Hudson Valley Wine Country is the Roots of American Wine. It all began in 1677 when the French Huguenots planted their first vines in New Paltz 100 years before anything was planted in California. They originally planted their vines on the hillsides of the Hudson Highlands and started a tradition of grapes and wine that continues to this day. In 1845, William Cornell established a vineyard in Ulster County. This greatly interested his brotherin-law, Andrew Caywood, who settled in Marlborough and worked on creating second generation hybrid vines. Caywood’s vineyards are now part of the Benmarl Winery which is owned today by the Spaccarelli Family. Brotherhood winery was the first commercial winery in the Hudson Valley. Established in 1837, known as the Jacques Brothers Winery, it produced altar wines. Renamed Brotherhood in 1885, the Washingtonville winery is the nation’s oldest continuously operated winery. In the 1970s, New York Governor Hugh Carey appointed John Dyson as state Commissioner of Agriculture. Dyson, a wine enthusiast himself (he currently owns Millbrook Vineyards in Dutchess County), formed a task force that composed the Farm Winery Bill. With testimony from Benmarl Winery owner Mark Miller and support from many other vintners and organizations, the bill was passed in 1976, paving the way for rapid growth of the Hudson Valley wine industry. Today the Hudson River Region, given this name in 1982 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, is home to over 20 operating wineries and three designated wine trails.

On February 19, 1861 President-elect Abraham Lincoln made his only stop in Westchester County, NY as he traveled by train from his home in Springfield, Illinois to Washington D.C., for his inauguration as President of the United States. Lincoln made his short address from a small platform placed on a baggage car located on the grounds of the railroad depot and over 1000 people witnessed the soon-to-be President for the first time. Lincoln made the following remarks before continuing on his journey: “I have but a moment to stand before you, and thank you for this cordial reception tendered by your authorities. In regard to the difficulties that lie before me, and to which your president has alluded; let me say that if I shall only be as generously and unanimously sustained as this meeting would seem to indicate I shall be in my management of public affairs, I shall probably not fail. But without that sustaining arm, I am quite sure that the difficulties that lie before me will not only be too great for my humble self, but too great for any individual man. I thank you then, as I have thanked the assembled thousands upon various occasions as I have passed along my route for such demonstrations, which if they mean anything, means that I shall be supported not only by the party who gave me election, but by the free, intelligent and earnest support of all the parties in the country.” Peekskill has never forgotten this historical event. Since February 12, 1904 the Lincoln Society in Peekskill has been the single oldest continually active Lincoln Society in the United States. Currently a complete renovation of the exterior of the structure is underway. The Lincoln Statue was dedicated in 2006 on the Depot site and the Lincoln Depot Foundation will continue the process of the restoration of the depot interior, creating an information center and establishing the Lincoln Depot Museum (scheduled to open in 2012). To become a member of the society or make a donation to help perserve this historic event, contact THE LINCOLN SOCIETY, P.O. Box 2097, Peekskill, NY 10566 or visit www.lincolnsociety.com.
