Bear Mountain Bridge

Have you ever been on a zipline? Looking for a new adventure in the Hudson Valley? If you enjoy being suspended from a cable by a nylon strap hundreds of feet above the ground, check out our 2 zipline locations.

Big Bear Ziplines in Hyde Park, NY Big Bear Ziplines is the closest adventure to NYC. Participants fly over 50 acres of woods and hay fields zipping from tree to tree using a climbing harness and trolley, launching from each platform anywhere from 20-30 feet in the air and soaring at heights of 10-100 feet. Definitely a wonderful family adventure. Fly at speeds up to 30 mph along 8 different Ziplines 200-1,400 feet in length, climb fire truck ladders, look out over breath-taking views from their custom-built flight decks, swoop down Tarzan vines and get up close and personal with nature as you hike through their forest and hay fields. Their experienced Zip Pilots will help you with your take-offs and landings, so you just sit back, relax and enjoy your flight! Mild hiking around the course involved, 12 years or older and must be 250 lbs. or less to participate. Tours run Fri, Sat and Sun 9am-1pm. Tours last approx. 3 hours and run year around. Visit www.bigbearziplines.com or call 1.888.zip.bbzi for more information and reservations.

New York Zipline Adventure Tours @ Hunter Mountain Hunter is the longest & highest zipline canopy tour in North America, featuring over 5 miles of ziplines, some reaching heights of nearly 600 feet above the ground. They offer zips for all ability levels from the true adventure seeker to the tamer family–friendly zips. There are 3 sections to the operation that is open year round: Guests are accompanied on tours of up to 2.5 hours by professionally trained guides utilizing Hunter’s chair lifts, terrain and base lodge. The Adventure Tower features four stories of climbing, rope bridges and cable walks as you wind your way to the top of this 60” tower. There is no age or weight restriction for this section, however there is a min. height restriction of 4’2”. This course will challenge and entertain young and old alike. The Mid Mountain Tour is a true Canopy tour, taking guests through the forest on a series of 6 ziplines, 4 bridges and an exciting rappel. This tour lasts approximately 2 hours as you experience the streams, waterfalls and natural setting of the Hunter Forest and is fun for the whole family. Weight restriction 60-250 lbs, height maximum 6’5”, ages 8 and up and guests must be relatively physically fit to jump, climb and light hiking. The Skirider Tour is the longest, fastest and highest zipline in North America with over 4.6 miles of ziplines. There are 5 separate, extremely long, fast and high ziplines – all side by side racing zips. The longest zip is 3,200 feet and 600 feet off the ground. This tour reaches extreme heights and speeds. Weight restriction 110-260 lbs., ages 10 and up, and must be physically fit to jump, climb, hike and partake in an extreme outdoor adventure. Guests will participate in a Zipline Pilot Training School where you will learn the skills required to safely experience this incredible adrenaline rush. New York Zipline Adventure Tours is owned and operated by Zipline Adventure Tours, LLC, and designed and built by Canopy Tours, Inc. They have been building and operating adventure tours across the globe for over 25 years and are proud of their impeccable safety record. A National Historic Landmark TuthillHouse At The Mill Restaurant & Tavern Once you step into TuthillHouse at the Mill Restaurant and Tavern you will feel the warmth, charm and history this unique Restaurant & Tavern has to offer. TuthillHouse at the Mill is a family run restaurant that offers American Cuisine with an Italian influence. They are open year round, seven days a week and offer a different menu for lunch and dinner. For lunch you may enjoy antipasto, French Onion Soup, various sandwiches, burgers or Lasagna...and that’s just a sample of their menu. For dinner there is seafood starters, steaks, pan seared duck breast, seared salmon and more. TuthillHouse features prime steaks, seafood, pasta and daily specials. Joseph and Toby Gabriello bring 30 years of restaurant experience to TuthillHouse as well as their daughter Samantha Gabriello who was Culinary trained at Apicius in Florence, Italy. Samantha also does all the baking on the premises and they offer wonderful breads and desserts including one of the house favorites Brooklyn Chocolate Stout Ganache Cake. They also use grass fed beef from Full Moon Farm in Gardiner and wines from local vineyards. The Gabriello’s bought the 15 acres that sit on the Shawangunk River and the old grist mill in 2006 and spent several years restoring the mill as well as making renovations. They opened the restaurant in September 2010. Today TuthillHouse at the Mill Restaurant & Tavern is a full service fine dining restaurant that also offers outside dining on the river and accommodates parties, special occasions and weddings both indoors and outside. They are also “Going Green” and will be converting the turbine system to a hydroelectric system this year. The History of this old grist mill goes back to 1788 when 18 year old Selah Tuthill used an undershot wheel to power grinding stones. The Tuthill Grist Mill is on the National Historic Register as the longest continuous grist mill in the country! It was one of 3 mills that was set on the Shawangunk River. Local farmers brought their harvest to the grist mill and it was turned into flour so they could make baked goods as well as sell the flour. There was also a wool mill and sawmill in the area as well. The Mills ran well into the 1800’s and also provided locals and New York City with flours, wool and lumber. Tuthilltown was a commercial, cultural and social center of the town now called Gardiner until the railroad was constructed in the 1870’s. From 1941 through 2001 George Smith owned the mill and used it to make kosher flour to make Matzo flour as well as whole wheat flour, rye flours, buckwheat and baked goods. The process was stone ground water powered Ultra Kosher. Hasidic Rabbis worked the mill three months out of the year to make matzo flour to bring back to New York City. If you would like to enjoy a delicious meal with great atmosphere and history, visit TuthillHouse at the Mill Restaurant & Tavern. They are located at 20 Gristmill Lane in Gardiner. For more information or reservations call 845.255-4151. They are next to Tuthilltown Distillery (internationally known for their Hudson Whiskey) as well as in the middle of the Shawangunk Wine Trail. To find out more information visit their website at www.TuthillHouse.com.

12th Annual Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce Balloon Festival History of Hot Air Ballooning In 1783 Pilatre De Rozier, a scientist, launched the first hot air balloon called "Aerostat Reveillion". The passengers consisted of a sheep, a duck, a rooster and remained airborne for fifteen minutes. The first manned attempt came about 2 months latter by two French brothers, Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier. The balloon was launched from the center of Paris and flew for twenty minutes. Two years later in 1785 a French balloonist, Jean Pierre Blanchard, and his American co-pilot, John Jefferies, became the first to fly across the English Channel. In the early days of ballooning, the English Channel was considered the first step to long distance ballooning. Several years later in 1793, Jean Pierre Blanchard became the first to fly a hot air balloon in North America with George Washington present at the balloon launch.

Ballooning Today in the Hudson Valley In the last 50 years, hot air balloons have regained popularity in a big way with festivals all over the country. Here in the Hudson Valley every year (for the past 20 years) locals and tourists alike have been experiencing the wonder of this great event at our area hot air balloon festival. Hot air balloon rides are popular for special occasions, thrill seekers, and for romance. Many romantic engagements have been proposed and bottles of champagne have been popped to celebrate special romantic memories in a hot air balloon. This year the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce presents the 12th Annual Balloon Festival with 4 area launches from Friday, July 1st through Sunday, July 3rd. The Friday launch will be at 6pm from the waterfront in Poughkeepsie as well as assorted locations throughout Dutchess County. The Saturday, July 2nd and Sunday, July 3rd 6am launch will take place on the Poughkeepsie waterfront at the Marist Boathouse located on River Road. The Saturday 6pm launch will be at various locations throughout Dutchess County however these locations were not available at press time. For additional information, visit www.dutchesscountyregionalchamber.org or our website calendar of events at www.experiencethehudsonvalley.com. Be sure to attend the Balloon Festival in Poughkeepsie and throughout Dutchess County July 4th weekend.
