Mani Manjot releases ‘Soulmate’ with Harbhajan Shera

S

ydney based song-writer Mani Manjot has released one of his romantic songs titled ‘Soulmate’ with the legendary singer Harbhajan Shera and music director Hammy Mangat under the record label ‘Surkhab Records’. ‘Soulmate’ is about a couple who realizes their dream of starting a wedded life together. Mani Manjot, a Chartered Accountant from Sydney was born in Ludhiana, India migrated to Australia at the age of 8 with his family. ‘My father has always been the core of my learning when it comes to Punjabi literature.” He says. ‘My father established an environment in my life which encouraged me to learn Punjabi to its depths but both him and I don’t exactly know how I went onto writing poems or songs in Punjabi. I think I was reading a lot of poems, songs and novels that one day at the age of 20 when I was standing on a well built foundation of vocabulary and grammar I thought I should write my own thoughts. I got into a cycle of practice; with more and more reading and writing I was able to improve but I am not perfect. I am learning and will always continue to learn.” He adds. Manjot began turning his songs into musical creations in December 2018 when he released his first project ‘Deeva’ with Sydney based singer Preet Sargam and received a fantastic

response. Manjot says he is now lucky to have the very esteemed Harbhajan Shera sing one of his songs. ‘Harbhajan Shera is one of my favourites. It’s a dream come true. I never thought that I would work with such a renowned artist. Many great artists have disappeared from the Punjabi music scene and it is important that we bring them back so that meaningful and soulful music can be created. The unfortunate change that we see today when it comes to Punjabi music is unhealthy and detrimental to our youth and society.’ He says. Harbhajan Shera has made his comeback with ‘Soulmate’ after a significant gap. His enchanting, melodious voice and expressive style had in the early 2000s confirmed his status as one of the rising stars of the modern Punjabi Music Industry. Harbhajan Shera describes ‘Soulmate’ as the start of the second AUGUST I 2019

innings of his musical career. The music video of ‘Soulmate’ is directed by Mannie Gill (V-sign Films) with Sugandha Bangar and Ricky Aulakh in lead roles. ‘Soulmate’ is available to watch and listen to on YouTube via the ‘Surkhab Records’ Channel and the audio can be purchased from Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music and Google Play. Manjot is very thankful to Hashmat (female voice) as well as Gurminder Kaindowal, Honey Brar and his good friend Harjinder Johal without whom he says the project would not have been possible. Desi Australia wishes Mani Manjot, Harbhajan Shera and the rest of their team the very best with ‘Soulmate’ and future work under their respective talents. www.DesiAustralia.com

FOBGAYS keeps families together “It’s not hard to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community - drink chai and say hi!” to support their queer family. It’s a way to keep families together and exist in the way they’re supposed to. Talking about queerness doesn’t convert people into being queer. No, what it does is make those around us who might be closeted (i.e. living in secret) to feel comfortable with who they are, which is fundamental to their mental health, future successes and overall quality of lives.

talking to people who want to know more, and people who want to help. Parents, Siblings, Families and Friends are all encouraged to come over, get to know each other and connect over their experiences of what it was like for them to have a close loved one come out to them and how they responded – what they knew, what they didn’t know, and what they really needed at the time.

So, how does FOBGAYS go about actually keeping families together? Well, we need YOUR help here. We need to be lead by families who have either gone through the process of having a queer loved one come out, or are passionate about creating an inclusive society for others to come out in.

If you’re reading this right now, you’re already on your journey to becoming a supportive ally or member of the queer community. You can find more information about our group, our mission and what we do on facebook.com/fobgays, or get in touch with us via the same page!

This Sunday on the 18th of August, we’re hosting a get together in the Sydney suburb of Strathfield, where we’ll be serving chai, eating pakoras and

rowing up, there was one thing about our Indian culture that was particularly emphasised to me over and over again – no matter where you’re from and where you go, your family is everything. Your family supports you, they look after you, and they celebrate your wins and feel your pain with you. Family is truly one of the cornerstones of desi life. Over the years, I’ve come to learn that family doesn’t just mean your mother and father, it’s your cousins, aunties and uncles, friends and well wishers too. Anyone who does all of the above things with you is part of your family. FOBGAYS+ is an organisation that was founded here in Sydney by a family to support family. We’re here to help keep families together through education, understanding, solidarity and community. As we’ve seen in the last few years, there has been a concerted effort from the LGTBQ+ communities around the world to help advance the awareness, the recognition and the quality of life for LGBTQ+ people. Now, I’ve written at length about those efforts and developments in our desi community, both here and abroad. Queerness (identifying as gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, gender fluid etc) is not a western phenomenon, as I often heard growing up. It’s even entwined in our history and culture. Respecting people’s right to exist is not western culture. It’s a value that we as humans all champion. The problem is that in our desi community, we don’t actually know that much about what queerness actually is. I often hear from people about how being gay (i.e. homosexual) is confused with being transgendered (i.e. identifying and existing as another gender). Aunties and uncles don’t know fundamentally how to talk about and support the people in their lives who are queer. FOBGAYS+ exists for this reason. We want to help bridge the gap in knowledge and support for queer people in our communities by giving families as platform Download Our App

TRULY PEACEFUL How to remain peaceful

By: Margaret Goodwin

Y

ou can go to a peaceful place, like a temple, and feel peaceful. But, can you feel peaceful without going to a peaceful place?

Can you feel peaceful when you are in a place, which is far from peaceful, like a large shopping mall, or at work, or driving your car in a traffic jam? These are the places where it would be really good to be able to remain peaceful. Can you do that? That is, can you remain peaceful in places, which are not normally peaceful? That would be really useful, as you probably cannot visit a temple, whenever you feel you need a little peace and quiet. So, it would be good to know how to remain peaceful in any environment and in any situation. If I, myself, am feeling peaceful, then I can remain peaceful, no matter what the atmosphere around me is like. What do I need to become stable, and remain stable, no matter what? I need to know myself. I need to love and appreciate myself. I am the eternal soul. I am an immortal being, residing in a temporary vessel, the body. In time the body will end but I, the soul, will not. So, I am something wonderful. There is much contained within me, the soul. Jammu and Kashmir’s Current Status and the legal implications

By: Mittu Gopalan

Article 370 of the Constitution Pursuant to Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, Jammu and Kashmir had special status prescribed to it. It was exempted from abiding the Indian Constitution. Accordingly, they have had their own constitution, and unless the State Government concurred, all laws passed by the Indian Parliament were not applicable to them. However, the President was allowed to make a decision as to which provisions of the Indian Constitution would apply to Jammu and Kashmir, and what was to be excluded. Issues revolving around Article 370 Article 370 was argued to be temporary, such that Jammu and Kashmir’s Constituent Assembly can alter, remove or retain it. The other prevalent interpretation was that the accession was temporary until a Plebiscite. However, the Delhi High Download Our App

court in Kumari Vijayalaksmi (2017), confirmed that Article 370 was to remain permanent, despite the wording in the constitution. But it could be deleted with a Presidential Order. But it was to be preceded with the agreement of Jammu and Kashmir’s constituent assembly, which no longer existed. Accordingly, there were conflicting views suggesting that it could not be deleted or that it could be deleted but only with the agreement of State Assembly.

As such, special laws under Article 35 A preventing those outside the State from buying property within Jammu and Kashmir has been overturned. Article 370 could only be modified with the concurrence of the state government. However, there not being a proper state government for approximately a year, it meant that it only needed the agreement of the governor imposing the rule. Accordingly, it made the procedure a lot easier.

Article 35 A Article 35 A includes a list of Presidential Exceptions, and also protects the exclusive laws of the State. These measures could only be changed if Sadar-i-Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir recommended it to be changed. However, such a Constituent Assembly unfortunately did not exist any longer. What has changed now that led to the current controversy? The Indian Government has revoked the entire Article 370, under which Article 35 A existed. Thus, Jammu and Kashmir can no longer have a separate Constitution and has to follow the Indian Constitution, like any other state. AUGUST I 2019

The apparent purpose for revoking the Articles and providing the state with a special status was solely to improve the development of the region and to integrate the state with the rest of India. However, this has not been welcomed by all, and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has raised turmoil, with schools having been shut down temporarily, the politicians there having been taken into custody and tourists being forced to evacuate. Though legally, this is a great precedent, the uproar it has generated in Jammu and Kashmir will have to settle before the proper functioning of the state follows through. www.DesiAustralia.com

Jodi McKay MP Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of New South Wales

By: Harmohan Singh Walia

I

t was a pleasure meeting Jodi McKay MP on 26 July 2019 after taking up the new role as NSW Opposition Leader. Desi Australia team congratulates Jodi McKay for her new role. In her interview about South Asian Community at her Burwood office she said, “I am incredibly grateful for the strong and long standing relationship that I have with the Subcontinental Australian community both in my electorate and across NSW.” While talking about multicultural Australia, she said, “Respect for multicultural communities is one of the fundamental pillars of my leadership. It’s why I took on the shadow multiculturalism portfolio because I will put multicultural communities at the heart of everything I do.” To a question as to how she valued the contributions of subcontinental Australians, she replied, “Subcontinental Australians have made an enormous contribution to the social, economic and cultural fabric of our state. The Labor Party values that contribution and under my leadership, I want subcontinental Australians to know that we value them, and support their dreams and their aspirations.” When asked about her future plans, Jodi gave a comprehensive reply regarding homeless people, education, hospitals etc. as follows: “I plan on holding this Government to account. We have more than 37,000 people who are homeless since the Liberals and Nationals came to Government, we’re seeing job losses across rural communities, people in Western Sydney are paying 60% more for their electricity and 2500 public servants are about to lose their jobs. The Liberals and Nationals might talk a lot about Download Our App

infrastructure, but they aren’t supporting the community.” “For me leadership is about being true to the values of our party. I want Labor to be a party with a big heart, a party that is compassionate and one which recognises the daily struggles and aspirations that people across our state have. People want quality education for their children, people don’t want to have to struggle on a hospital waiting list. The Government simply isn’t focused on these issues, but Labor is, because we see our state as a community, not a corporation.” AUGUST I 2019

“I love connecting with people and I want to speak to as many people as possible across our state. I want to follow the example set by the great Neville Wran, who travelled the state and made sure he was at every multicultural function, or country show, or CWA morning tea talking to people about who he was, what he stood for, and what the Labor Party could do to make our state, and our communities better.” Once again Desi Australia team wish Jodi all the best in her new role as NSW Opposition Leader. www.DesiAustralia.com

e are surrounded by technology and whatever you do it is apparent that it will need an internet connection. Your internet connection is a way for you to interact with the outside world. All the browsing and streaming is done with the internet but don’t forget that if you are browsing the outside world that means your computer is also accessible from outside. It is an open path and channel into your computer. If your internet connection isn’t secure someone could use it to steal your personal or financial information for malicious purposes. “The VPN (Virtual Private Network) technology came as an answer to individuals’ request to protect their online activities and to maintain their online confidentiality.” VPN is a secure solution that allows its users to send and receive data via the internet while maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of their data. This will mean that no one will be able to view your data remotely as it is encrypted during the transfer phase. Australia’s opportunity with the return of

Narendra Modi The historic win of Narendra Modi in the 2019 Indian elections has set a new narrative in Indian politics, where aspirational India has chosen the BJP government to write the destiny for a New India. If Modi 1.O was about hope and promise, Modi 2.O is about performance and delivery.

or Australia – India ties, this win is a moment of opportunity for Australia to reach out. To let India know, that Australia wants to solidify its bilateral architecture (Government, business and people-topeople led) with India through improved business and strategic ties. Scott Morrison’s cheerful selfie with NarendraModi, during his time at the G20 summit in Osaka,Japan appears to be his biggest social media hit to date, with more than 55,000 likes and over 12,000 retweets in less than 24 hours. The congratulatory call of Morrison to Modi post the election win, and the invitation he received from Modi to visit India, is an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed, noting the friendship between the two countries and the importance of the Indian community in Australia. Morrison’s engagement with Modi’s personal diplomacy can open new avenues for cooperation and collaboration. Australia may recognize that it cannot engage New India, with its old ways. It needs to be prompt and proactive, shedding off the old cyclical ways of engagement synonymous with roller coaster rides. There are enough countries today competing for India’s attention, whichoffers a fertile ground for businesses to expandbecause of the enormous opportunities. By 2025, one-fifth of the world’s working-age population will be Indian. By 2030, there will be over 850 million internet users in India. By 2035 India’s five largest cities will have economies of comparable size to middle income countries today. The India Economic Strategy (IES 2035), which was released last year by the Australian government, is an ambitious plan to transform Australia’s economic partnership with India out to 2035. India has commissioned a reciprocal strategy chaired by Ambassador Anil Wadhwa, who is authoring the Australia Economic Strategy for the Indian Government,

which is likely to be released later this year. The targets set in the IES2035 are to make India a stronger economic partner and this should be driven by specific actions, agenda and timelines. This is pertinent as Australia is increasingly aware of its economic exposure and potential vulnerability to China.

which should be fixed. India wants to be identified as a rule maker on the world stage; NarendraModi wishes to position India in a leading role rather than just a balancing force globally. Australia and India can be partners in forging regional institutions in the Indo-Pacific that can give peace and stability to the region.

India needs to weave its regional aspirations with its national ambitions. The development gap that exists across different States in India, asks fora coherent policy and support, which Modi has promised to deliver.Government’s focus on individual states is based on the belief that prosperity and growth for all states, will automatically lead to India’s growth as a whole. During the 2019 elections, BJP and its allies got more than 50% of the votes in 16 states making it an unmatched formidable force. A rising aspirational New India demands modern-daygoods and services – in education, agriculture, energy, resources, healthcare, financial services, infrastructure, science and innovation. Australia can be India’s development anchor by energising ministerial engagements on these priority sectorsand aligning itself with India’s goals. Communication, collaboration and consistency should define this relation now.

Australia and India are situated in the most dynamic region of the Indo– Pacific that is the center of economic and strategic gravity today. The region hasfeatured heavily in recent Australian strategic discourse, especially since the release of the 2013 defence white paper and the 2017 foreign policy white paper. The initiation of a 2+2 and new trilaterals have bolstered the strategic content of engagement. Military-to-military contact has also increased with the AUSINDEX naval and Australia Hind army exercises, Australian participation in India’s Milan exercise, regular port visits, and staff talks. China’s dominance on maritime security and freedom of navigation in this Indo–Pacific region have strengthened the need for greater maritime cooperation between the two nations.

Despite years of negotiations, a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement(CECA) remains elusive. The negotiation for the CECA between Australia and India started in 2011 to provide a boost to trade and investments between the countries. However, both sides have yet to resolve a number of issues;an agreement of this nature is always a challenge between countries, particularly when they are at different levels of development. Hence, Australia should look for ways to focus on securing some of the objectives of the CECA with India through other bilateral and other multilevel platforms. Closer collaboration between Australia and India could also come from Australia’s support for India’s membership of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). APEC is a free trade agreement among 21 Pacific Rim member economies to which India is keen to be a member. India’s absence from APEC is an anomaly,

AUGUST I 2019

Building strong international relations, making global friends and prioritising key sectors is high on the agenda for Modi 2.O as he seeks to fulfill his promise of creating a “New India”. India is looking for solutions driven by highend technology to address the country’s pressing problems. Can Australia tie its competitive advantages with India’s priorities? Australia needs to move fast, not just as a supplier, but also as a partner and enabler in India’s growth story. The opportune moment is now. India celebrates its 73rd Independence Day this year, it is a day to remember our forefathers who sacrificed their lives for the independence of a nation that we today live in, a nation which is proud of its rich heritage, history of thousands of years, a nation where the rich and prosperous Indus Valley civilization blossomed and was nurtured here. We are a nation of religious independence, where spirituality transcends the boundary of religions, where everyone is treated as equal and is under the same law and order system as mentioned in the largest written constitution in the world, the Indian constitution. Our Bollywood songs are enjoyed all over the world; the three Khans of the Bollywood industry have fans all over.

The Story of Independent India

consider our land equivalent to heaven: ‘janani janma bhumishcha swargadhapi ganiyasi. The Indian Independence Act, 1947: In the year 1947, the UK Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act 1947 transferring legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly. India still retained King George VI as head of state until its transition to full republican constitution. The struggle for our Independence was a long journey; the first full-fledged war against the British was fought in the year 1857 to 1947 when we finally got independence, not just that but the struggle was much longer than that, the battle of Plassey, the battle of Buxar et cetra are notable in this regard. How we developed during these years from 1947 to 2018 is an example for most of the nations. India just after Independence was at around 1% GDP and today

our projected growth is 7.4% almost making us the third largest economy in the world in the years to come after the economies of the US and China.

The biggest gamble in the History of Democracy: In 1952, when the first general elections were to be held under the leadership of Sukumar Sen, who was the first Chief Election Commissioner, India played the so called ‘biggest gamble in the history of democracy’ by introducing the term ‘Universal Adult Franchise’ and we risked our very existence as a nation, because at that time, democracy survived only in the developed countries of the west but we took the chance and that turned out to be the biggest achievement of our nation as a whole, the Congress was elected to lead the nation under the leadership of Pandit

Jawaharlal Nehru, previously the nation was ruled by an interim government and the first speech Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave at the Parliament House, the famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech, is worth remembering and I can feel that patriotic vibes as I continue writing about it. “ Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity. ” -Tryst with Destiny speech, Jawaharlal Nehru, 15 August 1947 The Independence of India was a remarkable event in the history of this civilized world, and

we are getting better. The Independence of our nation was a result of a long struggle which inspired many other countries too; we respect the sacrifices of our forefathers for this land. India is a nation which celebrates each and every season with full enthusiasm and this is what makes us ‘Indians’. We have a rich culture and in contrast we are one of the most experienced country for the term ‘globalization’ where today almost every kid wears a blue jeans, have a hot dog in snacks, surfs the internet, posts a picture on Facebook, get an update about the US Presidential election or any test match or One day match happening between India and Australia at Adelaide Stadium, or having a McDonalds Burger. The ray of hope for this 72 years young India is its youth itself, which is undoubtedly revolutionary and it strives to get the best out of the available resources. India is a nation which is being continuously shaped by the diversity, shared cultures and history, and many languages. It’s a land which provided refuge to thousands of refugees and we made them feel a part of our fraternity.

The good thing is India and Australia are friends for many years now, even under the British regime, you may refer to the western Australian town of Australind which is a portmanteau word named after Australia and India. Mangalore city is situated in both the countries. Towns of Cervantes, Northampton and Madura were used for breeding cavalry horses for the British Indian Army during the late 19th century. So, both the countries have shared a significant share of history together and in the 21st century too, the youth of both the nations are going to be the best out of all, India always want to develop together with all the countries and we believe in sustainable development. I read an interesting fact in this regard that after World War II happened, the Australian government under Ben Chifley supported the independence of India from the British Empire to act as a frontier against communism. Later, under Robert Menzies, Australia supported the admission of India as a Republic to the Commonwealth Nations. So, this friendship of both the nations is meant to grow and as our young friends usually say that both the countries and its youth are going to be the best friend forever.

t is well said that health is not valued until sickness comes. So does the month of winter has its own importance regarding the health matters. Ayurveda believes that if a proper regimen is followed during each season, the body will gain its maximum benefit. Thus, Ayurveda not only helps to maintain the seasonal imbalance and its effect on the body, but it also aims in the well being and the healthy state of a person. The season has got its own value and therefore in Astangahridaya (classical treatise) of ayurveda mentions about the seasonal regimens and its effectiveness in health sector.

Among the classification of disease, two factors are mainly focused on-

The respective seasons and there classification is-

4 Nija roga - Disease caused due to imbalance in internal factors. For example: eating excessive hot substances which leads to gastritis.

1. Shishira Ritu (winter, dewy season) 2. Vasanta Ritu (spring season) 3. Greeshma Ritu (summer season)

4 Agantu Roga - Disease caused due to external factors. Such as injuries. Both these types of disease can occur to body and mind. Rthu (seasons) In the Ancient Ayurvedic Calendar six seasons are mentioned where each season holds its own importance A season (Ritu) is comprised of two months (two Masa).

The above three Ritus form Uttarayana - Northern solstice. Here, fire is dominant. It is also called as Adana Kala, where the human strength is relatively low. 4. Varsha Ritu (Rainy Season) 5. It is also called as Visarga Kala, where the human strength will be relatively high.

Ayurveda

The climatic condition in Australia falls in the category of winter where the Sun releases strength of the people. Here moon is more powerful; earth is cooled down due to clouds, rain and cold wind. Also, mild rain is also observed at times during this season. Impact of winter on our health and food recommendations

moderately is healthy.

During winter, Ayurveda hold the opinion that the people are strong, digestive fire becomes powerful, because it gets obstructed from flowing outward due to external winter. Like fuel consumes the things that it comes into contact, digestive fire may cause emaciation of body tissues. Hence, in this period, one should consume food predominant with sweet sour and salt tastes.

Panchkarma is highly recommended in this season for a complete detox of the body. The other treatments which hold a good result in the body during this season are the Abhaynga (oil massage) with oils that have Vata balancing properties and are done after consultation with the Ayurveda doctor. Mindfulness and it’s benefits on mental health…

By: Sumeet Chawla

M

indfulness means present moment awareness. Mindfulness practice, techniques and exercises are designed to stimulate, facilitate and increase our capacity to become present and aware. Being more aware makes us less reactive, because we do not feel threatened by our own thoughts and emotions or other people. Being more aware gives us more choices and options in working with our life, giving us the opportunity to work with difficult situations. Practicing awareness is by noticing, feeling and observing our experience by the moment, i.e, watching our thoughts, feeling our emotions, listening to sounds, feeling the physical sensations of the body, noticing smells and noticing our surroundings. Mindfulness and awareness never stop difficult or challenging situations from arising, but we realise that this is the way things are, so as a result we pay more attention to the moments – good or bad. We develop gratitude and love, simply because we are here, valuing the present moment. While our minds and thoughts tend to live in the future worrying about what might happen or the past worrying or regretting what has happened, our body is a wonderful gateway to the present moment. This is why it is useful to develop our awareness of the body and practice being embodied, noticing the physical sensations as well, asking our body, how does it feel, do we feel comfortable or Download Our App

uncomfortable, what is the temperature of our body, what sensations can we notice? Using mindfulness as a tool, we start to understand the mind. A simple intervention to start with is, feeling the body or breath. When you notice you are thinking in an unhelpful way, direct your attention to your body, your feet on the ground or to your natural breathing pattern. You can bring your awareness or curiosity to your experience, by asking

yourself, what are you feeling in your body, because your body exists here and now, you realign with the present. Remember that mindfulness is difficult to do and our minds will always wander. Try not to be critical of yourself. When you notice your mind wandering, you can just gently bring yourself back to the exercise/ natural breathing pattern. Set aside regular time to practice each day.Regular short periods of mindful meditation can work better than occasional long ones. If you struggle to find the time, you might want to decide on one or two routine activities which you will try to do mindfully each day. Whether you practice mindfulness, meditation, yoga or exercise, all are effective practices for reducing stress, relieving anxiety, reducing depression, increasing feelings of well-being and increasing relaxation. There are some great apps online such as The Mindfulness App., Headspace and Calm. There is support available from doctors, psychologists, carers, via medication and so on, but deepening your sense of presence through mindfulness practices have proven health benefits, improving the quality of your own life and also the lives around you.

Healthy Lifestyle and Exercise can reduce the risk of Dementia:

By: Ms Anju Mathur

D

ementia is a collective term used to describe various symptoms of cognitive decline, such as forgetfulness. But it is more than memory loss. Dementia impacts person’s ability to think, reason, sense of judgement; behaviours, feelings, social skills, physical functioning and ability to communicate.
