ONE ON ONE Veteran singer Asha Bhosle has been declared the greatest Bollywood playback artist of all time by the UK-based Eastern Eye newspaper. The 81-year-old singer beat her older sister Lata Mangeshkar for the top spot on the list that takes into account factors including number of songs, honours, international impact, versatility, fan base and popularity amongst fellow music industry professionals. The singer was surprised by the news. Eastern Eye entertainment editor Asjad Nazir, who compiled the list, said, “Asha was a deserved choice to top the list. Apart from being the most prolific singer the world has ever known, Asha’s versatility has given her the widest body of work. Her attitude of "Yes, I can and I shall" still reflects in her personality.

New Delhi (IANS) Legendary singer Asha Bhosle is all for women empowerment. While the 81-year-old believes that women must learn to strike the right balance between their personal and professional lives, she says learning a martial art has become essential for the safety of women. Asha, who is an active professional in the world of singing and performing even at her age, also loves to dote on children. She rued the fact that women today are concentrating more on their careers, and abstaining from the kitchen. "Even after a tiring day at the recording studio, I used to get into the kitchen straight away and cook something healthy for my son Anand," said the charming songstress, looking elegant. An avid follower of international cooking shows, she believes women must experiment with food like "I did with my songs". During an event, Asha spoke to her awestruck audience about her life experiences and women empowerment. She shared the difficulties she overcame to reach the pinnacle of success and popularity that she currently enjoys worldwide. The singer believes the power of positive thinking and will power can enrich the quality of a person's life. "If at the age of fifty, a woman starts to give into her pains, she will lose her willpower to do anything in life. A woman should stay strong and take all her pains with her to her death bed and be a pillar of strength for those around her," said the singer, who made her acting debut with "Mai" in 2013. 14

HEALTH & FITNESS hours, try the Troga. Combinations of yoga, while on the treadmill, it helps to exercise, strengthen and increase flexibility of the upper body. Yoga stretches also help to strengthen the leg muscles, improve balance and give the body a cardio workout. However, since yoga can also involve complicated postures, don’t try this unless guided or taught by an experienced fitness expert. Also, yoga calls for fluid and sweeping movements, so speeding on the treadmill is a no-no while doing the Troga.

Bored of running on the treadmill or pumping the iron for ever? Then, here are fitness regimes that can turn a grueling exercise

BOLLYFIT: Foot-tapping Bollywood can be in-

spiration enough to break into a jig. Combine this with fitness and you will have a great mix of sleek dance moves and an intense calorie burning moves for a great workout. What’s more, if you ever have to show your dancing talent while at a friend’s wedding, you will know exactly how to match your steps in style!

CY-YO: How about doing many things together? If you are gung-ho about variety, try the Cy-Yo, which is a one-hour workout combining 10 minutes of yoga, 40 minutes of speed cycling on a stationary bike, then 10 more minutes of yoga to cool down and refocus the mind. That’s quite a handful to keep anyone occupied, we say!

ANTI-GRAVITY YOGA: Imagine hanging in

mid-air in a unique fusion technique that promises to relieve compressed joints and align the body from head to toe. Anti-gravity yoga uses a hammock-like structure to act as a soft trapeze and support, while one tries out simple movements and inversions. A mix of yoga, Pilates, calisthenics, aerial arts and dance helps to work on the body’s sense of balance, builds strength and improves flexibility. It also works on better blood circulation in the body, with its inversion technique. And the best part? Well, the feeling of flying in mid air, even if it’s only from a small height!

EXERCISING is not only about cutting calories but also enjoying doing so, while at it. While session sat the gym can be addictive in the beginning, most fitness enthusiasts complain of workout schedules turning boring over time, which sometimes also leads to many taking a long break from exercising regularly and consecutively, piling back on the weight. To tackle the problem of fitness fatigue, there are many exercise options which will keep the ball rolling, incase boredom catches up.

TROGA: For those on the treadmill for countless 18

AQUA AEROBICS: If you love water, then this one is for you! Water aerobics in addition to the standard benefits also helps reduce the risk of muscle or joint injury with lessened gravity by making the body float. What’s more, one need not be a strong swimmer as the sessions are often in shallow pools. Floating in water places lesser stress on joints making this a safer option for those prone to injuries or with limited flexibility. —Complied by Ipsita Basu Dasgupta * Please Consult your physician before conducting any of the above exercises.

THE FOODIE

New Delhi (IANS) After introducing the dramatic black burger in India, Barcelos, the South African casual diner, has now turned a red leaf with a range of such-colored burgers, which it unbashedly describes as "messy". The restaurant which caught the imagination of the nation with its black burger, has now gone a notch higher. The beautiful shade of red "is obtained by the powder of tomatos, chilli flakes and beetroot," Rohit Malhotra, general manager (Operations) of Barcelos India. One ordered a red hotie with a grilled chicken fillet, the tomatos and the lettuce adding a mix of flavors. The 'mess', which one can definitely vouch for, is caused by the peri peri sauce which drips down with every bite. As one bit deeper into the burger, which is a large enough portion for one person, another one, with a minced mutton patty, caught the eye with its inviting look. Named red meaty, it is exactly what it looks like - huge, juicy and heavenly. The cheese, which is slightly melted, brings out the sinful taste even more, reminding you that this is what you were here for! Good food which fills your stomach to the "T". It would have been nice had the food temperature been a little warmer, but you would not complain once you bite into the red beast. Ditto for the 'mess'. Barcelos is also a haven for vegetarians but surprisingly, the veg burger is devoid of potatoes which one always 24

DESI EXPRESS MAGAZINE

expects. Beetroot and chickpeas are the main ingredients and you are in for another delightful surprise. Personally, the veg burger tastes better than the chicken one, probably because it's way more succulent - and equally 'messy'. Another ad-on to the menu are the "molecular" drinks like the peachy iced tea and the tangy mango, which arrived at the table with a smokey visual effect caused by a combination of dry ice and liquid nitrogen. Wondering how good all the colours and effects were on the digestion, Malhotra promptly replied that "most of the things we are using are organic". After the black and red addition, one could not help but ask whether Barcelos will come up with something in purple or probably a more imaginative colour? "We don't plan to come out with a burger in another colour but, yes, we plan to bring out something new, concentrating on chicken and salads. We'll bring something innovative which is new to India, which is again going to be interesting," Malhotra concluded. For the record, the fieriness and tanginess of peri-peri sauce and flame-grilled chicken found its way here through the launch of Barcelos. The restaurant gives a choice to enjoy food with four sauces: tangy lemon, mild peri, veri peri and supa peris. You can also mix any two sauces to get a new flavour. The eatery's ambience is lively and casual. There's wooden flooring, and the first level of the outlet, integrates earthy elements with some greenery around it. The walls also offer a glimpse of the legends of Barcelos, a city in Potrugal, and details the journey of the restaurant chain. FOR ADVERTISING CALL 404-246-3256

PARENTING

As a parent, there's just one thing I'm totally certain of: no matter what you do, you're wrong. You're either too strict, or too lenient, or too nice or too nasty, too loving or too emotionally reserved. There's more good news: you'll only realize the complete error of your ways about 15 years from now, when you look back with hindsight, and see all the things you did that you shouldn't have. Don't ask me to prove this, I just know it the way a flower knows when to bloom, or the way we know that every year, come monsoon, Mumbai's roads will feel like the surface of the moon. You always start off with the hope of becoming your ideal of the best-ever parent the best pal parent, the pushiest parent, the most-free-spirited parent, etc. I aspired to be a combination of the parents I had plus the sort of parents I wished I had. After seven years of trying, I can freely admit to absolute, humbling failure. I had a wonderful role model in my mother, but turns out I've all her few faults and none of her virtues. One of the things I know I'd love to give my child is the sense of freedom that my mum instinctively gave me. The feeling of total acceptance was the best thing about growing up in my family. I don't remember mum ever laying down the rules or yelling at us. But growing up with very few rules unfortunately leaves you unequipped for the harsher realities of life and work. So my totally inspired and unique plan was to raise my child with all the love and freedom my mum gave, plus a sense of discipline. It didn't quite work out. Turns out that I have my grandmother's hissy tongue and temper, and her need for discipline, plus my own inherent laziness and indiscipline. And while I refuse to push my kid hard to succeed, I don't have my mum's true sense of laissez-faire either. I do however have her high levels of maternal anxiety. As Himesh Reshammiya once said: It's Complicated. As parents are we very different from our own? I think we spoil our kids more we are wealthier, 30

DESI EXPRESS MAGAZINE

busier, and it's easier to buy toys than to give kids time. In 15 or 20 years this will come back and bite us for sure. Unlike us, our parents were also a lot more secure about their methods. Whether they were beating us up or spoiling us silly, they did it with the firm conviction that they knew what was best for us. Or maybe it just seems that way now. Perhaps each generation of parents has to re-learn the skills of passing on the rules of living. Sometimes parents succeed and raise happy, well-adjusted people, and others, well, don't. I remember reading Philip Larkin's (1922-1985) poem This Be the Verse, and going saucer-eyed at the eff word in it. I didn't get it then, but now, with more perspective on what it is like to be both a parent and a child, I do. In three very tight stanzas, Larkin spells out his bitterness: They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you. The poem becomes kinder towards parents in the second stanza after all, he writes, they were screwed up by their parents too. The solution? Stop having kids and deepening the 'coastal shelf' of misery. Larkin's advice doesn't work because nature's urge to multiply is thankfully stronger than good poetry. Sometimes I think the greatest lesson we can teach our children is how to be kind - so that when they grow up, they can look back at our mistakes with a large measure of forgiveness!

Twenty-seven-year-old, Sallu Dev, recently broke up with her boyfriend after being together for over two years. Her boyfriend felt that she was spending more time with her phone and ignoring him. Shallu in her defense claimed, “I was unconsciously wrecking my relationship.

According to a recent study around 48 per cent said that their iPhone or Android was more important to them than intimacy. Tech gadgets were invented to make communication easier. However, with time, they have actually become a barrier creating a rift in the bedroom, as more women choose their Smartphone over sex. The latest findings by the Huffington Post and online magazine Real Simple reveal more about their habits with their mobiles. WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY? Around 3,583 women participated in the study where women over 30 were quizzed about their habits when it came to using their mobiles. The findings reveal that around 76 per cent of women look at their phone every hour and half of those cannot go 15 minutes without checking their handset. Some 69 per cent of those polled sleep with their phones in their bedrooms, and 39 per cent look at their phones when they are the bathroom. Also, despite evidence to the contrary only 27 per cent of respondents said they were addicted to smart phones. When asked if they would go back to a time before the Internet, a resounding 71 per cent said no. One of the reasons could be that mobile users check their devices so often is that they suffer withdrawal symptoms if they don’t get their fix of networking. SO WHAT COMPELS WOMEN TO CHOOSE A CELL PHONE OVER INTIMACY WITH THEIR PARTNERS? Clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany blames it on addiction to cell phones. She says, “A large number of women have relationship problems because they spend more time on their Smartphone's than with their partners. Most women check phones every few minutes, and claim they cannot control 34

He warned me a couple of times, but I chose to ignore him thinking he was overreacting. However, when I look back now I realized that I went overboard choosing to spend more time with my phone.” Like Sallu there are many women you will run into at a party or even at dinner tables who are constantly checking their phones instead of mingling with guests and friends. Hence, Seema says, “It’s not surprising that the women in the survey chose their phones over intimacy with their partner. It’s a fallout of excessive exposure to addictive gizmos that were meant to make life convenient but have now become an addiction that we find hard to give up.”

New Delhi (IANS) Celebrity couple Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan, who doled out some clothes washing tips at an event here on Wednesday, stressed on the importance of sharing household chores to ensure "quality time" for a married couple. The duo has been married for over 15 years, and they looked very much in love as they took to the stage at the launch of detergent brand Ariel's new 'His & Her' pack, which is a part of the brand's 'Share the Load' movement. The movement emphasises on married couples sharing the household chores among each other. "I've always been a firm believer that equality within the household is important for a happy marriage. Despite our work commitments, Malaika and I ensure we split the work at home. From raising the kids to doing the laundry, it's a partnership," Arbaaz said at a press conference here. The 47-year-old actor-filmmaker also believes that it's important to give personal space to your partner after marriage. "It's very important to give each other some space. If you smother anyone, somewhere or the other, it pressurises the person. If you love somebody, set them free," he added. Malaika agreed and said: "When it comes to managing the household, equal responsibilities are key. Arbaaz and I, owing to our hectic schedules, have always ensured we take turns with all the chores. I've always said that a happy household is one where the man shares the load. New Delhi (IANS) Cleanse and condition your hair well, use the right tools and protect it from heat, humidity and pollution for a healthy shine on your mane. Daniel Bauer, TRE Semmé hair stylist, shares some easy tips to prepare your hair for the season. * CLEANSING We often end up with various hair problems during the summer things like hair fall and dandruff are common occurrences due to the build up of dirt and pollution on our scalp. * Use hair-friendly tools and styles Since your hair is already prone to so much damage in the summer because of all the heat and humidity, we should ensure that all other processes are smooth and hasslefree. If you choose to blow dry your hair, avoid heat and opt for the cool setting. It’s there for a reason. Avoid metal or rubber when buying hair accessories as they can easily entangle the hair causing breakage. Cotton or plastic hair bands will always be safer. Opt for loose styles such as fishtail braids or a glamorous messy bun that are really summer-friendly and easily be created at home. * Protect—tresses while swimming There is no better feeling than taking a dip into cool water during the scorching summer heat. The pool water is usually loaded with chlorine and other chemicals that can cause damage to the hair. While you may feel good, you will notice that your hair gets frizzy. When you are in the pool, ensure that you cover up with a swimming cap. After swim, care is also really important so ensure that you wash and condition your hair with moisturizing hair products. * Stay healthy It’s not only about what you put on your hair that matters, but also what you put inside your body. Maintain a diet that is rich in Vitamins, Iron and Zinc that help in preventing your hair from becoming dull, thin and dry. Indulge in different kinds of berries and fruits like kiwis, oranges and papaya, while also gorging on all things green. Spinach and other leafy vegetables are really high in Iron content and can do wonders for your hair. What should you do if you already filed your federal tax return and then discover a mistake? First of all, don't worry. In most cases, all you have to do is file an amended tax return. But before you do that, here is what you should be aware of when filing an amended tax return. Taxpayers should use Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to file an amended (corrected) tax return. You must file the corrected tax return on paper. An amended return cannot be e-filed. Please call if you need assistance or have any questions about Form 1040X. If you need to file another schedule or form, don't forget to attach it to the amended return. An amended tax return should only be filed to correct errors or make changes to your original tax return. For example, you should amend your return if you need to change your filing status, or correct your income, deductions or credits. You normally do not need to file an amended return to correct math errors because the IRS automatically makes those changes for you. Also, do not file an amended return because you forgot to attach tax forms, such as W-2s or schedules. The IRS normally will mail you a request asking for those. NOTE: Eligible taxpayers who filed a 2014 tax return and claimed a premium tax credit using incorrect information from either the federally facilitated or a state-based Health Insurance Marketplace, generally do not have to file an amended return regardless of the nature of the error, even if additional taxes would be owed. The IRS may contact you to ask for a copy of your corrected Form 1095-A to verify the information. Nonetheless, you may choose to file an amended return because some taxpayers may find that filing an amended return may reduce their tax owed or give them a larger refund (see below for additional information). If you are amending more than one tax return, prepare a 1040X for each return and mail them to the IRS in separate envelopes. Note the tax year of the return you are amending at the top of Form 1040X. You will find the appropriate IRS address to mail your return to in the Form 1040X instructions. If you are filing an amended tax return to claim an additional refund, wait until you have received your original tax refund before filing Form 1040X. Amended returns take up to 16 weeks to process. You may cash your original refund check while waiting for the additional refund. If you owe additional taxes with Form 1040X, file it and pay the tax as soon as possible to minimize interest and penalties. You can use IRS Direct Pay to pay your tax directly from your checking or savings account. Generally, you must file Form 1040X within three years from the date you filed your original tax return or within two years of the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. For example, the last day for most people to file a 2012 claim for a refund is April 15, 2016. Special rules may apply to certain claims. For more information see the instructions for Form 1040X or call the office. You can track the status of your amended tax return for the current year three weeks after you file. You can also check the status of AFZAL MITHWANI CPA, EA, PFS (P) 770-817-7000 (Q) 770-817-7001 afzal@univisioncpa.com

amended returns for up to three prior years. To use the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on the IRS website, just enter your taxpayer identification number (usually Social Security number), date of birth and zip code. If you have filed amended returns for more than one year, you can select each year individually to check the status of each. Filing an amended return after receiving a corrected Form 1095-A If you enrolled in qualifying Marketplace health coverage, then you have probably filed a tax return based on a Form 1095-A that you received from the Marketplace. Your Marketplace may have subsequently told you that your original Form 1095-A contained an error and sent a corrected Form 1095-A. Comparing the forms can help you determine whether you are likely to benefit from filing an amended tax return. Specifically, you are likely to receive a larger refund or owe a smaller tax payment using the corrected Form 1095-A if the two Forms 1095-A generally show the same information, but any one of the five scenarios below is true on the corrected form. 1. Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan Premium is Larger: The monthly premium amounts of the second lowest cost silver plan, shown in Part III, column B, lines 21-32, are greater on the corrected form than on the original form. 2. Monthly Premium Amounts are Larger: The monthly premium amounts of the plan in which you enrolled, shown in Part III, column A, lines 21-32, are greater on the corrected form than on original form. 3. Advance Payment of the Premium Tax Credit Amounts are Lower: The monthly amounts of advance payment of the premium tax credit shown in Part III, column C, lines 21-32 are smaller on the corrected form than on the original form. 4. More Months of Coverage: Your corrected Form 1095-A lists more months of coverage and meets all the following conditions: ∗ The corrected form shows more months of coverage than the original form. This means that the corrected form shows positive values in more of the rows under Part III than the original form. ∗ The values are the same on the corrected form for the months that the original form showed coverage. ∗ On your original tax return, you claimed a net premium tax credit, meaning you entered a value on line 26 of the Form 8962 filed. 5. Fewer Months of Coverage: Your corrected From 1095-A lists fewer months of coverage and meets all the following conditions: ∗ The corrected form shows fewer months of coverage than the original form. This means that the corrected form shows positive values in fewer of the rows under Part III than the original form. ∗ The values are the same on the original form for the months that the corrected form shows coverage. ∗ On your original tax return, you reported owing a repayment of excess APTC, meaning you entered a value on line 29 of the Form 8962 filed.
