COURTESY OF ANDREW “OLYMPIAN
“Resillience in the face of adveristy is the key to success.”
–Olympian Drew

Andrew “Olympian Drew” Reyes is a Liberian born sprinter, 2000 Olympian, Gold Medalist, and a Fitness Trainer based in Los Angeles, California.

Andrew, thank you so much for sitting down with us and sharing your story. Please tell us how you got started as an athlete. Why track and field and who have inspired you to pursue such a competitive career?

My greatest inspiration came from my mother, where I saw her doing everything she could to be the best at what she does, being a mother, an inspirational speaker, and a minister to lot of people in the world. So, I figured I want to be great at something, I chose sports. Track & Field was my last sport that I ended up playing. I started off with Soccer, Volleyball, and then Track & Field.

As an Olympian sprinter and professional trainer, how do you balance the intense physical demands of your own training with guiding others in their fitness journeys? Balancing the intense physical demands of my own training with guiding others in their fitness journeys, is a challenge I embrace with passion and dedication. As an Olympian sprinter

and professional trainer, I understand the importance of prioritizing self-care and recovery while also providing support and motivation to my clients. First and foremost, I prioritize my own training regimen by setting clear goals, establishing a structured schedule, and ensuring proper rest and recovery. This allows me to maintain peak performance levels while also being able to effectively lead by example in my role as a trainer. In guiding others in their fitness journeys, I draw upon my own experiences as an athlete to provide personalized coaching and support. I tailor training programs to meet the unique needs and goals of each individual, while also emphasizing the importance of consistency, perseverance, and resilience. Communication is key in maintaining balance between my own training and guiding others. I effectively manage my time and energy by scheduling training sessions and client appointments in a way that allows me to fulfill both commitments without compromising quality or effectiveness. Ultimately, I view my role as both an Olympian and a professional trainer as a privilege and a responsibility. By striking a balance between my own training and guiding others, I am able to inspire and empower individuals to reach their full potential, both in fitness and in life.

Can you share a pivotal moment from your sprinting career that taught you a valuable lesson applicable to both athletics and coaching?

Certainly. One pivotal moment from my sprinting career that taught me a valuable lesson applicable to both athletics and coaching was during a major championship race where I faced unexpected adversity. As I lined up at the starting blocks, I felt confident and prepared, ready to give my all on the track. However, as the race began, I encountered a setback—a fellow competitor accidentally bumped into me, throwing off my rhythm and causing me to lose precious momentum. In that moment, I had a choice: to let frustration and disappointment consume me, or to stay focused and resilient. I chose the latter. Despite the setback, I remained determined and composed, channeling my energy into regaining lost ground and finishing the race with all the strength and speed I could muster. While I didn’t achieve the result I had hoped for, I emerged from the experience with a newfound understanding of the importance of adaptability and mental toughness. This experience taught me a valuable lesson that I now apply both as an athlete and a coach: resilience in the face of adversity is key to success. In athletics, setbacks are inevitable, but how we respond to them defines our journey. As a coach, I strive to instill this mindset in my athletes, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, mental fortitude, and the ability to overcome obstacles on the path to achieving their goals.

In your experience, how does the mindset of an elite sprinter differ from that of someone just starting their fitness journey, and how do you address this in your training approach? The mindset of an elite sprinter differs significantly from that of someone just starting their fitness journey in several key ways. Elite sprinters have typically spent years honing their craft, developing a deep understanding of their bodies, training methodologies, and competition strategies. They possess a high level of self-discipline, determination, and mental toughness that allows them to push their limits and strive for excellence in every aspect of their training and performance. On the other hand, individuals who are just starting their fitness journey may lack the same level of experience, confidence, and knowledge about training principles and techniques. They may also face challenges such as self-doubt, fear of failure, and uncertainty about where to begin. As a coach, it’s essential to recognize these differences in mindset and tailor my training approach accordingly. Here’s how I address this in my training approach:

1. Setting Realistic Goals: For elite sprinters, goals may be focused on achieving personal best times, winning championships, or competing at the highest level. For beginners, it’s important to start with achievable, short-term goals that build confidence and momentum, such as completing a certain distance or improving endurance.

2. Building Confidence: Elite sprinters often have a strong belief in their abilities, built upon years of training and competition experience. Beginners may lack this confidence initially, so I focus on providing positive reinforcement, encouragement, and praise for progress made, no matter how small.

3. Educating on Training Principles: Elite sprinters are typically well-versed in training principles and methodologies. For beginners, I take the time to educate them on the basics of training, including proper form, technique, and the importance of consistency and gradual progression.

4. Adapting Workouts: Workouts for elite sprinters are often intense and specialized, tailored to their specific event and performance goals. For beginners, I prioritize building a solid foundation of general fitness before introducing more advanced or specialized training techniques.

5. Emphasizing Enjoyment and Longevity: While elite sprinters may be driven by the pursuit of medals and records, beginners often benefit from focusing on enjoyment, health, and longterm sustainability. I encourage beginners to find activities they enjoy and to view fitness as a journey rather than a destination. Overall, my training approach acknowledges the differences in mindset between elite sprinters and beginners, while also emphasizing the universal principles of dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of personal growth and improvement. By tailoring my approach to meet the individual needs and goals of each athlete, I strive to help them unlock their full potential and achieve success on their fitness journey.

As a trainer, how do you tailor your coaching methods to accommodate individual differences in athletes’ abilities, backgrounds, and goals?

As a trainer, I understand the importance of tailoring my coaching methods to accommodate the individual differences in athletes’ abilities, backgrounds, and goals. Here’s how I approach this:

1. **Initial Assessment:** I begin by conducting a comprehensive assessment of each athlete, including their current fitness level, medical history, past training experiences, strengths, weaknesses, and specific goals. This allows me to gather valuable information that will guide the development of their personalized training program.

2. **Individualized Programming:** Based on the assessment findings, I design individualized training programs that are tailored to each athlete’s unique needs, abilities, and goals. This may involve selecting appropriate exercises, setting realistic goals, and establishing a structured training plan that takes into account factors such as training frequency, intensity, volume, and progression.

3. **Adaptability:** I recognize that athletes may respond differently to training stimuli and may require adjustments to their programs along the way. I remain flexible and adaptable,

monitoring each athlete’s progress closely and making modifications to their training as needed to ensure continued progress and prevent injury.

4. **Communication:** Effective communication is key to understanding the individual needs and preferences of each athlete. I maintain open lines of communication with my athletes, actively listening to their feedback, addressing any concerns or questions they may have, and providing ongoing support and guidance throughout their training journey.

5. **Motivation and Support:** I provide personalized motivation and support to help each athlete stay focused, engaged, and motivated to achieve their goals. This may involve setting short-term milestones, celebrating successes, offering words of encouragement, and providing constructive feedback to help them overcome challenges and setbacks. 6. **Holistic Approach:** I take a holistic approach to coaching, recognizing that physical training is just one aspect of an athlete’s overall well-being. I consider factors such as nutrition, recovery, sleep, stress management, and mental resilience when designing training programs to ensure a comprehensive approach to optimizing performance and overall health. By tailoring my coaching methods to accommodate the individual differences in athletes’ abilities, backgrounds, and goals, I empower each athlete to reach their full potential and achieve success in their athletic endeavors.

What role do you believe mental toughness plays in achieving success as a sprinter, and how do you help athletes develop this aspect of their performance?

As a sprinter, I firmly believe that mental toughness plays a critical role in achieving success on the track. Sprinting is not just about physical prowess; it also requires mental strength, resilience, and focus to perform at the highest level, especially during high-pressure situations such as races and competitions. Mental toughness enables sprinters to overcome challenges, push through pain and fatigue, stay focused on their goals, and perform at their best even when facing adversity.

It allows athletes to maintain confidence, composure, and determination, even in the face of setbacks or setbacks. To help athletes develop mental toughness, I incorporate various strategies into their training programs:

1. **Goal Setting:** Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals helps athletes stay focused and motivated. By breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks, athletes can track their progress and celebrate their achievements along the way, building confidence and resilience.

28 // LOUD&CLEAR MAGAZINE

2. **Visualization:** Visualization techniques involve mentally rehearsing performance scenarios, visualizing success, and picturing oneself achieving goals. By vividly imagining themselves performing at their best, athletes can enhance confidence, reduce anxiety, and improve performance under pressure.

3. **Positive Self-Talk:** Encouraging athletes to cultivate a positive inner dialogue can help them build confidence, stay motivated, and maintain focus during training and competition. By replacing negative thoughts and doubts with positive affirmations and self-belief, athletes can overcome challenges and setbacks more effectively.

4. **Mindfulness and Relaxation:** Teaching athletes mindfulness and relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and meditation, can help them manage stress, anxiety, and pre-race nerves. By staying present and calm in the moment, athletes can optimize their performance and make better decisions under pressure.

5. **Resilience Building:** Encouraging athletes to embrace challenges, learn from failures, and bounce back stronger can help them develop resilience and mental toughness.

By reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth and focusing on what they can control, athletes can maintain a positive mindset and persevere through adversity. Overall, developing mental toughness is a continuous process that requires practice, patience, and perseverance.

By integrating these strategies into their training programs and providing ongoing support and guidance, I help athletes cultivate the mental strength and resilience needed to achieve success as sprinters on and off the track.

In transitioning from athlete to coach, what aspects of your training philosophy have evolved, and how has your own experience as a sprinter influenced your coaching style?

Transitioning from athlete to coach has led to several evolutions in my training philosophy, influenced by my own experiences as a sprinter:

1. **Individualization:** As an athlete, I primarily focused on my own training needs and goals. However, as a coach, I’ve learned to prioritize individualization in training programs. I recognize that each athlete has unique strengths, weaknesses, and goals, and I tailor their training accordingly. This approach allows me to maximize each athlete’s potential and address their specific needs effectively.

2. Holistic Approach: While training as an athlete, I primarily focused on physical preparation and performance. However, as a coach, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of a holistic approach to training, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional aspects of performance. I incorporate elements such as mental skills training, recovery strategies, and lifestyle factors into my coaching philosophy to support athletes in achieving optimal performance and overall well-being.

3. Communication and Leadership: As an athlete, I relied heavily on my coaches for guidance and support. Transitioning to a coaching role has underscored the importance of effective communication and leadership. I strive to cultivate open, positive relationships with my athletes, providing clear direction, constructive feedback, and encouragement to help them reach their goals. I also prioritize fostering a supportive team environment where athletes feel valued, motivated, and empowered to succeed.

4. Adaptability and Flexibility: Training as an athlete taught me the importance of adaptability and flexibility in responding to changing circumstances and individual needs.

As a coach, I’ve embraced these principles, recognizing that training plans may need to be adjusted based on factors such as injuries, performance feedback, and external constraints. I remain flexible and responsive, modifying training programs as needed to optimize athlete development and performance.

5. Continuous Learning and Growth: Finally, transitioning from athlete to coach has reinforced the importance of continuous learning and personal growth. I draw upon my own experiences as a sprinter to inform my coaching style, but I also seek out new knowledge, perspectives, and techniques to enhance my effectiveness as a coach.

29 LOUD&CLEAR MAGAZINE //

By staying curious, open-minded, and committed to ongoing development, I strive to provide the best possible support and guidance to my athletes as they pursue their athletic goals.

How do you incorporate innovative training techniques or technologies into your coaching methods to stay ahead in the field of sprinting and athletics?

By incorporating innovative training techniques and technologies into my coaching methods is essential for staying ahead in the field of sprinting and athletics.

Here’s how I do it:

1. Biomechanical Analysis: Utilizing advanced motion capture systems and biomechanical analysis software allows me to assess athletes’ running mechanics and identify areas for improvement. By analyzing factors such as stride length, cadence, and ground contact time, I can tailor training programs to optimize efficiency and performance.

2. Strength and Power Training: Incorporating innovative strength and power training techniques such as plyometrics, resistance bands, and dynamic movements helps athletes develop explosive speed and acceleration.

By integrating these methods into training programs, I enhance athletes’ neuromuscular coordination, power output, and sprinting performance.

Modalities: Implementing cutting-edge recovery modalities such as cryotherapy, compression therapy, and recovery boots helps athletes optimize recovery between training sessions and competitions. These technologies aid in reducing muscle soreness, inflammation, and fatigue, allowing athletes to recover faster and perform at their best.

By staying abreast of the latest advancements in training techniques and technologies, I ensure that my coaching methods remain innovative, effective, and aligned with best practices in sprinting and athletics. By integrating these innovative tools into my coaching arsenal, I empower athletes to reach their full potential and achieve success on the track.

Can you share a memorable success story of an athlete you’ve trained, highlighting the unique challenges and triumphs they experienced throughout their journey?

Certainly! Let me share the inspiring success story of Jake, a former client who played for the Indianapolis Colts: Jake Kileen came to me seeking guidance and support to overcome a series of setbacks and injuries that had hindered his performance on the football field. As a professional athlete with the Indianapolis Colts, he faced immense pressure to excel at the highest level, but recurring injuries and doubts had taken a toll on his confidence and morale. Despite facing significant challenges, Jake approached each training session with unwavering determination and a positive attitude. We began by addressing his physical limitations and weaknesses, implementing a comprehensive rehabilitation program focused on restoring mobility, strength, and stability in areas affected by injury. Throughout his journey, Jake demonstrated remarkable resilience and perseverance, pushing through pain and setbacks with grit and determination. He remained committed to his rehabilitation regimen, diligently adhering to prescribed exercises and protocols, even on the toughest days.

As Jake progressed through his rehabilitation program, his resilience and determination began to yield results. With each passing week, he regained strength, mobility, and confidence, gradually returning to peak physical condition. He approached each milestone with a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that he was one step closer to achieving his goal of returning to the field stronger than ever. Ultimately, Jake’s hard work and perseverance paid off. He made a triumphant return to the football field, showcasing his newfound resilience and determination to overcome adversity. His journey inspired teammates, coaches, and fans alike, serving as a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering determination in the face of challenges. Today, Jake continues to inspire others with his story of triumph over adversity. He serves

3.Recovery

as a role model for aspiring athletes, demonstrating that with dedication, resilience, and a positive mindset, anything is possible. His journey serves as a reminder that success is not defined by the obstacles we face, but by our ability to overcome them and emerge stronger on the other side.

As an Olympian, you’ve experienced high-pressure situations. How do you help athletes manage performance anxiety and maintain peak performance during crucial competitions? As an Olympian who has experienced high-pressure situations firsthand, I understand the importance of helping athletes manage performance anxiety and maintain peak performance during crucial competitions. Here are some strategies I use to support athletes in overcoming performance anxiety:

1. Visualization and Mental Rehearsal: I encourage athletes to visualize themselves performing successfully in competition, vividly imagining each aspect of their performance, from warm-up routines to executing their techniques flawlessly. This mental rehearsal helps athletes build confidence, reduce anxiety, and reinforce positive outcomes.

2. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Teaching athletes mindfulness and relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization, helps them stay present, calm, and focused during competition. By incorporating these practices into their pre-competition routines, athletes can manage stress and anxiety more effectively.

3. Focus on Process Goals: Emphasizing process goals over outcome goals helps athletes stay focused on the task at hand and avoid becoming overwhelmed by the pressure to perform. By breaking down their performance into smaller, manageable goals, athletes can maintain a sense of control and confidence, regardless of external factors.

What advice do you give to aspiring sprinters and fitness enthusiasts about maintaining a healthy balance between pushing their limits and avoiding burnout?  My advice to aspiring sprinters and fitness enthusiasts about maintaining a healthy balance between pushing their limits and avoiding burnout is as follows:

1. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your body’s signals and cues. If you’re feeling excessively fatigued, sore, or mentally drained, it’s important to give yourself permission to rest and recover. Pushing through pain or exhaustion can increase the risk of injury and burnout.

2. Prioritize Recovery: Make recovery a priority in your training regimen. This includes getting adequate sleep, practicing

relaxation techniques, incorporating rest days into your schedule, and engaging in activities that promote physical and mental relaxation, such as yoga or meditation.

3. Variety and Balance: Incorporate variety into your training routine to prevent monotony and reduce the risk of overuse injuries. Balance high-intensity workouts with lower-intensity activities such as walking, swimming, or cycling to give your body time to recover and adapt.

4. Set Realistic Goals: While it’s important to challenge yourself and strive for improvement, it’s equally important to set realistic goals that take into account your current fitness level, abilities, and lifestyle. Break larger goals into smaller, achievable milestones and celebrate your progress along the way.

5. Nutrition and Hydration: Fuel your body with nutritious foods and stay hydrated to support optimal performance and recovery. Eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains provides the energy and nutrients your body needs to perform at its best.

Hoops with Marvin Gaye

I could have been anywhere, but I was driving to my home on Sugarloaf Mountain above Boulder when the song came on the radio. Diana Ross was singing Lionel Richie’s “Missing You”. It’s about the emotional aftermath of the death of Marvin Gaye. Music has the power to transport you in space and time. This song transported me three years earlier to the island of Maui, when I spent a late afternoon and early evening with Marvinsomeone who’s music has meant a lot to me.

I’ll never forget coming home to the condo I shared with my brother in Kihei, Maui. I had worked the day shift at a restaurant in Lahaina.

When I walked in the door Doug said, “Marvin’s on the court.” “Which one?”

“Kamala. He’s been playing basketball all afternoon.”

Doug met Marvin in one of the tight, cliquish networks on Maui. Doug had a day job at the Mana Kai, a local hotel on the beach with Colorado connections. At night, he moonlighted as a cab driver. Carl Jackson, owner of the cab company, offered Doug a part time job and a room to rent in a dilapidated plantation house when Doug was new to the island. Jackson knew Marvin and invited Doug over to Marvin’s thread bare recording studio where Marvin and his hangers-on dropped acid and listened to tapes by a funkadelic group led by George Clinton. Doug wasn’t into that scene, but whenever the group got together to play hoops on one of the four beach basketball courts on the southside, he was eager to join in.

Marvin and Doug formed a friendship on the hot asphalt under the blistering Hawaiian sun. Marvin could count on Doug to dominate under the rim, blocking shots, getting rebounds, and laying in the ball. Marvin could also count on Doug’s friendship. Doug wasn’t star struck and wanted nothing from him. Marvin, in turn, offered Doug a respite from his grueling two jobs and from the loneliness of being new to the island with no friends to speak of.

I quickly changed out of my waiter uniform and into my basketball gear. As I raced out of the condo I shouted, “Let’s go!”

“You go. I’m tired. Tell Marvin you’re my brother.”

At the Kamala Beach court I saw a group of young black men and another group of young islanders. They were taking a break between games. I quickly spotted Marvin Gaye. I walked up to him and said, “I’m Doug’s brother.” He pointed at me and said, “You’re on my team.”

// LOUD&CLEAR MAGAZINE 48

It wasn’t long before we were running up and down in an unregulated game of full court, street basketball. It also wasn’t long before the sun’s heat radiating from above and bouncing back up from the black tarmac got to me. My legs were heavy. I could barely draw a breath of the humid ocean air. I fumbled rebounds and I couldn’t get a shot off without it being blocked. As I ran back up the court after having just turned the ball over to the other team, Marvin ran up alongside me. “Can’t you jump?” it was more of an accusation and less of a question.

The more mistakes I made, the more Marvin got frustrated. Finally, he yelled at me. “Can’t you JUMP!” I yelled back, “I’m NOT Doug!” Marvin’s anger inspired me to stop doing what was not working. I decided if I couldn’t make a basket or come down with a rebound, I’d focus on defense. I channeled the notorious Bill Laimbeer. I landed my elbow in the ribs and the backs of any opponent coming into the lane.

Then it happened: I threw a wild elbow that connected on the jaw of a player on the other team who was also part of Marvin’s entourage. Time stopped. He doubled over in pain and grasped his jaw with both hands. He

straightened back up, and while rubbing his face, he stared me down. He was built like a boxer. He squared off on me, then he stepped towards me. I knew I was in for it. Marvin stepped in between us, waived his arms, and said, “Leave him alone.” The boxer gave me a dirty look and ran back up the court.

Although Doug wasn’t a fan of Marvin’s music and wasn’t impressed by his stardom, I was. I found it hard to believe I was playing basketball with Marvin Gaye. It was absurd, yet epic all at once.

Marvin didn’t save me from a beat down that afternoon because of my fondness for him. He saved me because of his fondness for my brother.

As I made my way up Sugarloaf Mountain three years later, the emotional voice of Diana Ross brought back this memory from a basketball court on a beach on Maui.

“Tell me why the road turns …”
